The Heart of a Servant
What if the greatest battle in your life…
is happening quietly in your heart?
The thoughts you allow.
The feelings you hold onto.
The attitudes that shape who you’re becoming.
Jesus came with a different kind of heart —
not to be served, but to serve.
This week, Pastor Dan Southerland reminds us:
a servant’s life always begins with a surrendered heart.
📖 Matthew 20:28
Let Jesus shape what’s inside… so we can serve like Him outside.
Church the Bible says in Psalm 107, give thanks to the Lord for He is good and His love endures forever. So get ready to worship, to raise your voice, to clap your hands, because He's been a faithful friend. Amen? Come on church, let's worship. I've seen favor, but not like this. I've seen blessings that don't make sense. Can I testify? I've seen miracles I could not buy. I've seen power I can't deny. So can I testify? I'm gonna shout it out. Yeah, the Lord is good. I've seen it all my life. Yeah, the Lord is good. He was faithful then, He is faithful now. Forevermore I will shout, Hallelujah. Yeah, the Lord is good. Can I testify? Can I testify? Can I testify? Can I testify? Come on, raise your voice and sing it with us. He's been with me from the very start. He's the only one who has my heart. So can I testify? He's the one who never lets me down. He's the one who turned my life around. Can I testify? I'm gonna shout it out. Yeah, the Lord is good. I've seen it all my life. Yeah, the Lord is good. He was faithful then, He is faithful now. Forevermore I will shout, Hallelujah. Yeah, the Lord is good. Can we testify? Can I testify? Yes, Jesus, you've been so good. We shout our praise and we say, Can I testify? Are you ready, church? Come on, let's sing this together. If you only knew what Jesus saved me from. I was in the dark, He brought me to the sun. Now I'm living through, look what the Lord has done. Look what the Lord has done. If you only knew what Jesus saved me from. I was in the dark, He brought me to the sun. Now I'm living through, look what the Lord has done. Come on, church. Look what the Lord has done. If you only knew what Jesus saved me from. I was in the dark, He brought me to the sun. Now I'm living through, look what the Lord has done. Look what the Lord has done. Come on, sing this out.
Yeah, the Lord is good. Yeah, the Lord is good. Yeah, the Lord is good. Sing it all my life, yeah. Yeah, the Lord is good. He was faithful then, He is faithful now. Forevermore I will shout, hallelujah. Yeah, the Lord is good. So can I testify? Come on, sing it out. Can I testify? Yeah. Can I testify? Make some noise, church. Today we introduce a new song. But more than a song, it's a declaration of our commitment and our faithfulness to follow Jesus wherever He leads us. You know when it gets hard. Even when we're being stretched, but we say yes to you, and we follow you all the days of our lives. When the song is rising from our mouths, we'll sing out a new melody. Yeah, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah. We will not miss this moment, because we were born for such a time as this. Reaching for our brothers and our sisters, we won't let the devil win. We won't look back at our own lives, we've seen the King. Yeah, He paid it all, and now we are His, He's everything. I have decided I will follow Jesus anywhere He leads us, that's where we will go. I have decided I will follow Jesus anywhere He leads us, that's where we will go. We've got no more questions, we will go in His authority. Jesus exalts in His vision, we say yes. With no apologies, I have decided I will follow Jesus anywhere He leads us, that's where we will go. I have decided I will follow Jesus anywhere He leads us, that's where we will go.
I have decided I will follow Jesus anywhere He leads us, that's where we will go. I have decided I will follow Jesus anywhere He leads us, that's where we will go. We follow you Jesus, we follow your example of being a humble person and loving those around us when we sing this out. I am riding with Jesus wherever he goes, living surrendered my life on my own. I am riding with Jesus wherever he goes, living surrendered this life on my own. I am riding with Jesus wherever he goes, living surrendered this life on my own. Hey, I'm Dan Sutherland, one of the pastors here at Local Church. So good to see you today. Let me do something that I did four weeks ago and something I did a couple of weeks back, and I wanna do it again today. If you're looking for Eric Gamero, our lead pastor, he is on a two-month break. It is not health-oriented. His health is great. It is, we want you to get rested before we've got a new building being constructed this summer. That'll be crazy. And before we've got expanded space by next summer, which means we will double again. That will be crazy.
So we're literally working a plan to get each of the five of us that are on the lead team some extra time off before the craziness hits. And Eric is doing that. They're at Disney as we speak. Now, that sounds like purgatory to me, but it sounds like heaven to them and to their kids. So they're having a good time. His health is great. No issues. Just wanted to give you that quick update. He's just finished month one. He's in month two. He'll be back in March. Until then, you're stuck with me and Garland and Johnny. And Johnny will be up next week. If you've not heard him speak, you want to be here next week. Little bit of country Oklahoma boy wrapped up in a lot of wisdom and a lot of humor. Now, I gave him a script for him to start from. So here's the deal. If you like his teaching next week, I wrote it. If you didn't like it, he messed it up. Okay, he'll do great next week. I'll be sitting out front having a big time. Thank you for adjusting. Thank you for allowing us to get our team some time off, which we desperately, desperately wanted to do. We started a series last week,
and that series is called Made for More, Improving Your Serve. And here's what we discovered. Last week, we talked about the fact that regardless of how long you've been following Jesus, there's more. Regardless of how well you know him, there's more. Regardless of how much he has blessed you, there's more. And the way we get to the more is by serving. In fact, Jesus says, the way you serve me, Jesus, is by serving others in my name. So that's what we talked about last week. If you weren't here, go back and grab that. foundational lesson to the five-week series that we're doing. Today, our title is, The Heart of a Servant, because here's the truth. If you can't keep your heart and your mind right, this and this, you're not going to serve anybody long-term. If your mind gets messed up, how you think about people, or your heart gets messed up, how you feel about people, you'll quit serving. You won't serve. You won't keep going. You won't experience the more God has for you. So, I want to start with this picture as a public service announcement. Men, next Saturday is Valentine's Day. I don't care if she's telling you she doesn't want anything. I'm not telling you not to believe her. I'm telling you next Saturday is Valentine's Day. It's the national holiday of love. Birds everywhere, because matters of the heart matter.
Who's in your heart matters? What's in your heart matters? Which is why the Scripture mentions the heart 800 plus times. Now, when God talks about something 800 times, that's a hint. That's kind of like, hey, people, this heart thing matters. This heart stuff matters. Get a hold of what I'm trying to teach you about the heart. So, we're going to talk about the heart of a servant today. Here's a handful of my favorite verses about the heart. We won't do 800, but here's seven or eight. You ready? Joshua says, incline your heart to the Lord. Samuel says, serve the Lord with all your heart. Later in Samuel, it says, the Lord sees not as man sees. Man looks on the outward appearance. The Lord looks on the heart. You may have dressed to impress God today. It didn't work. He's not looking at the outside. He's looking at the inside, at the condition of the heart. Psalm 19, great prayer about the heart. Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my God, my rock, my Redeemer. Psalm 37, 4, love this, delight yourself in the Lord, and he gives you the desires of your heart. Psalm 151, a prayer that David prays after he's messed up, create in me a clean heart, O God. And then Proverbs 3, 5, which says, trust in the Lord with all your heart and don't lean on your own understanding. There's so, so much about the heart.
But let's go back to the verse that Jesus, the thing he said about serving that we focused on last week. I did not come to be served, but to serve and to give my life as a ransom for many. Jesus came to serve you and me. He came to serve God the Father by serving us. Jesus came to serve, that's your first blank. That's what he did. Now we think Christ followers do two things. Our definition of a Christ follower, also the same as our definition of a disciple at the local church, is two things. A disciple is someone who does what Jesus does, that's the first half of the definition, and obeys what Jesus teaches. That's a disciple, a serious Christ follower, somebody who does what Jesus does and obeys what Jesus teaches. So if Jesus came to serve others, then we choose to serve others. If Jesus taught us to serve others, we choose to obey Jesus by doing what he teaches. But here's the thing church, with a full heart, with a whole heart, with an all-in heart, not just lip service, yeah, I'm going to be nice to them because I'm supposed to, uh-uh, all-in, full heart, all the way. Why does that matter? One of my favorite verses, a little jewel found in Proverbs, I use the New King James Version on this verse because I love the way it says it, for as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. Talk about an interesting verse. Doesn't say as a man thinks in his mind, doesn't even say as a man feels in his heart. It says as a man thinks in his heart. What in the world is up with that? To Old Testament times, Jesus comes along. The Hebrews believed there was a very close connection, you look in this way, between the mind and the heart.
They believed that you could not separate thought and feeling, that thought would produce feeling and feeling would further feed thought. This is why the Scripture tells us to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your heart. or your mind. They had those two things wrapped up together. So here's how behavior works. If you ask a Christian psychologist to tell you how behavior is developed, this is how it's developed. If you're a parent, this is good stuff. If you're married, this is good stuff. If you're trying to manage you, this is good stuff, okay? So this is all of us. I'm going to explain it for about three minutes, then I'm going to give you the longest set of blanks you've ever seen in your entire time at the local church. Behavior starts in the mind with a single thought. It starts with a thought, and it comes across the mind. Let me give you a silly but true example. My wife and I, my fiance at that time and I, were planning to get married, and we were dating. And I met her brother for the first time, my future brother-in-law. And the first time I met him, I walked away from that circumstance thinking, what a jerk. That was my thought. The next time I met him, he was even more of a jerk. By the third time I met him, I'm just expecting a jerk, and I was not disappointed. So this thought is going in my head, and it's been repeated now three different times. You know what's happening? That thought becomes a feeling. Now I'm thinking, I love this woman, but do I want to put up with this guy for the next 50 years?
I mean, he's coming to every Thanksgiving. Do I want to do that? He's going to be there Christmas. I mean, I'm having crazy thoughts. Can I shoot him? You know, can I get rid of him? Can I marry her and not the family? I mean, how does this work? Because the thought has taken over my mind, and now it's gone from a thought to a feeling to an attitude. I mean, I am dreading the next time I see this guy. We're getting married in a month, and I know the guy's coming, and it's absolutely driving me crazy. That's not the emotion you want before you're getting married. You want to be focused on how great a day that's going to be. I'm focused on Tommy's coming. Lord, help me not kill him. He's coming. I mean, that's where I'm stuck, because the thought becomes a feeling, becomes an attitude, and now it starts to affect my behavior. I mean, I'm trying to avoid the guy. I'm trying to not show up where he shows up, and it becomes a habit, and the problem with habit is now it's affecting my character, and now there's not one jerk in the picture. There's two, and I'm the bigger one. Now let's write all of it down. This is how behavior happens. Are you ready? Thoughts, single thoughts, lead to feelings, which lead to attitude, which leads to behavior, and repeated behavior leads to habits, which leads to changed character, and here's what happens to us as Christ followers.
Even though we're following Christ, we don't look like Christ followers because of that crummy attitude, because of that bad behavior, because of that habit we have picked up. Even though we love Jesus, we don't look like we love Jesus. We look like we're just fired up about something else, and the problem is, as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. The unchecked thoughts, the unchecked emotions I allow to settle in my mind and in my heart change me. I've got to learn to guard it. Write this in. Here's what happens. Our unchecked thoughts and feelings lead us away from Christ. You could be an every week church attender. You could take notes like it's going out of style. You can study the Scripture. You can pray a ton, but if you're still stuck because there's an idiot in your life, a jerk in your life, and you can't get around your feelings and your thoughts about that person, you can actually be moving away from Christ. Let me say it another way. Our unchecked thoughts and feelings can shut down our growth in Christ. I've seen some 50-year church attenders that are 13 in their emotional maturity because they haven't learned to check and guard their thoughts and their hearts. This is a big thing, and soon you're not serving. people because you're just too mad at everybody to even want to serve them. Now, that's the bad news. Here comes the good news part of the teaching. You ready? There is a way out. There is a solution. It's found in 2 Corinthians 10 5. Here's what Paul says.
How do we deal with that? How do we deal with these thoughts we don't want in our mind? How do we deal with these feelings we don't want in our hearts? We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Do you see that? Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. We're going to talk about how to do that in a minute, but here's a verse that acts as a filter. What thoughts do you let in? What thoughts do you not let in? Whatever's true, whatever's honorable, whatever's just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever's commendable, whatever is of excellence, if there's anything worthy of praise, think about these things. So I take that thought that my brother-in-law is a jerk, and I hold it up and say, well, is that something that's honorable, and just, and pure, and lovely, and commendable, and it's excellence? Is that going to make me more like Jesus? No. Then I let it go. I refuse to keep going there and building that case. Look at the verse before. Guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus, and then it tells us how. So here's the blank. Write it in. We have to learn to guard our thoughts and our feelings. We have to. Now, I realize the world is telling us, feel what you feel. Feel it deeply. I realize the world is telling us, express your thoughts. If it comes into your mind, let it come out of your mouth.
Please don't. Please don't. Because it made it across your mind does not mean it ought to come out of your mouth. Does not mean you ought to do damage with it. Does not mean. People say, well, at least I'm honest. Yeah, and you have no filter. Grow up. Thirteen-year-olds are honest. They're just whack. They're going to tell you what they think. That's not the goal. That's not admirable. That doesn't build the kingdom of God. We have to guard our thoughts and our feelings. There's an ancient proverb that says it this way. It's a Confucius proverb, 3,000 years old. It says, you cannot keep a bird from flying over your head. You can keep it from building a nest in your hair. Now, it's obviously not about birds and nests. If it were, I'd say to you, the way to keep a bird from building a nest in your hair is don't have much hair. That helps. Wear a hat and cover up whatever you got. But it's not about the bird and the nest. The point is, you cannot keep a thought from crossing your mind. You can decide you're not going to build a case around that thought. You cannot stop a feeling from flooding your heart. You can decide, am I going to get stuck in this feeling and be even more ready to be hurt and even more ready to add to that feeling?
Am I going to guard my heart and my mind, or am I not? Here's the wild part. Nobody can guard it but you. Nobody can guard your heart and your mind but you. So let me say it even better. Write this in. I can stand guard over my thoughts and my feelings. Another way to say it. I can stand guard over my mind and over my heart. We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Now, how do we do that? I think this is the key, and I'm going to walk us through it a little bit at a time. We guard our hearts and minds by submitting, there's the key word, every thought and feeling to Christ. We guard our hearts and our minds. When a crazy thought comes by or a feeling just washes over us from nowhere, we literally submit it to Jesus. We submit it to Him, and if we don't, we just go on down the road of unchecked thoughts. If we don't, we just go on down the road of unchecked feelings, and soon we're crazy, emotional like the 13-year-old we've already mentioned, because we have no control over what enters our hearts or our minds. Christ says we can choose. Now, I've used two questions. I used these questions for the last 50 years, because I've got to tell you, the thing with my brother-in-law was true. driving me nuts. Loved my wife, did not like him. Wanted to get married to her, wasn't sure I wanted this family. And I had to start praying these two prayers. You ready for them?
Jesus, is this how you want me to think and feel about this person? Scripture says he's the way, the truth, and the life. Another way to say that is Jesus, would you show me how you feel about them? And I began praying, Lord, how do you feel about Tommy? I kind of think he's a jerk. What do you think? God wouldn't say that back to me. You know, I kind of don't like him, God. What do you think? God wouldn't say that back to me. He was not validating my thoughts. He was not validating my feelings. And I had to learn that the guy wasn't a jerk at all. Another question that I ask, I still do, Jesus, will this thought or feeling help me serve this person? Is it going to help me serve him to think he's an idiot, a jerk? Nope. It's not. Is it going to help me serve him to try to avoid him? Nope. It's not. I'm going to give you three stories here, one from my childhood, one to finish the story of my brother-in-law, and one from my marriage that's a right now kind of story. I've told you this story before about my childhood, but I'm going to give it a slightly different angle today to apply to the teaching we're looking at. All of us have baggage from our growing up years. If you don't know about your baggage, it's just because you haven't lived long enough yet. We all have some baggage. Now, the good news is we all have good things from our childhood too.
If you make a list, hopefully there's more good stuff from your childhood than crummy stuff, not for all of us, but hopefully. I mean, there was a lot of good things about my family growing up, but the two pieces of baggage that got passed on to me from my dad were these. One, I grew up in an extremely angry home. Anger was the dominant emotion in my home, and my dad was the constantly angry person. He never hurt us physically. He threatened it all the time, and emotionally and verbally, you just did not want to make him mad, and it didn't take much. We lived under that fear. We lived under that abuse, and we'll call it what it was. The other thing about my dad, and he was a great man in so many ways, and it's got a good ending to that story, so hang on to that, is he treated my mom like crap. Now, dad was from an age and a time where women were considered to be possessions. He treated her with less rights than the four kids. He told her what she wanted. He told her what she would do. He told her what she would think. Give you a silly example. My dad always had one of these 32-ounce plastic tumblers that he drank iced tea out of, and he was a Southerner, so of course it was sweet iced tea, which is the only kind of iced tea, let me be clear. You can still buy these like four for $2 at Walmart. I should have brought one, and when his tea was out of it, but he had ice left, he would set it on the nightstand next to his recliner, and he would rattle it, which meant that my mom, wherever she was, his wife, wherever she was in the house, my mom was supposed to quit doing what she was doing and run to him to get the tea glass and fill it up and bring it back. He was a male chauvinist pig, period. When I started dating Mary, and we got engaged, I remember a conversation I had with God that
went something like this, God, I realize the model of a marriage I've had for 20 years, where the man is everything and the woman is nothing, where the man is king and the woman is a slave, I will not do that, I reject that, I guard my heart and my mind, I know it's in there, God, it's what I've seen for 20 years, I'm not doing that, and we started our marriage with a free idea. idea that we both served each other. Now, does that 20-year example still rear its ugly head once in a while? Yes, but have you met my wife? Five foot two of dynamite? You ain't gonna mistreat her, not more than once. So we've had a 50-year marriage where we serve each other. Our first year of marriage was amazing, it was a honeymoon. It really was an amazing year. We lived in a little bitty apartment that had more roaches in it than the town we lived in. We didn't have money. Our date night every week was to go out and play tennis and then go to the Sonic and share a large Limeade, but man, it was a great year. Second year of marriage, I went to grad school, we moved into the same neighborhood where my mother-in-law lived, who was 70, much older, and she had a back surgery for cancer that left her an invalid the rest of her life, wheelchair-bound, and all of a sudden, a 21-year-old son-in-law was bathing and dressing and caring for his 70-year-old mother-in-law. That would never have worked if I had kept the baggage from my childhood and said, men are king, women are slaves. God knew. We've all had baggage, don't give in to it. We all have to guard our hearts and our minds. By the way, my brother-in-law, finish that story, started showing up more that second year when my mother-in-law was sick, and you know what I learned as I prayed, God how do you see my brother-in-law, how should I treat my brother-in-law, I realized he wasn't a
jerk at all. He was a 30-year-old man that was watching his only surviving parent die. He was scared. He wasn't a jerk. I was the jerk for being judgmental. Guard your hearts and your minds. Fast forward to today, wrap this story up. My dad made a great change the last 10 years of his life. First 50 years, he was a male chauvinist pig, but my mom got Parkinson's the last 10 years of her life, and she was bound to a wheelchair. All of a sudden, my dad became a servant. It was one of the most amazing things to watch. Did I think a 70-year-old male chauvinist pig could change? No. Did he? Yes. It was awesome, and I celebrate who he became those last 10 years. Mary and I are now at a new season of service in our lives. Some of you have been asking me about her. You haven't seen her in three months. There's a reason. Her back is so bad, and her knees are so bad, and the pain is so high that getting out is almost undoable. But the part that's complicated is that her normal blood pressure of 100 over 60, which is low, is now 90 over 50, and when you've got that and a bad back and bad knees, it tends to me when you stand up, the room spins, and you fall, and she's had that happen several times. Now, this is nothing terminal. She hadn't quit. She's still sassy.
I know when she's sassy, she's still in the fight. She came last Tuesday and taught our ladies Bible study, first event at the church she's been at in three months. She's paid for it ever since. But I'm getting a chance, more than we've had in our first 50 years of marriage, to serve her, and I'm thankful that God taught me 50 years ago, guard your heart, guard your mind. Don't let that baggage from your childhood dominate your adult years. I'll give you a couple more things, and we'll stop. We have to learn to guard our hearts and our minds. So one question and one final blank. What lie are you believing that's keeping you from serving someone today? What lie are you believing? For me, the lie was, he's a jerk. I don't have to serve him. He wasn't a jerk. I was the jerk. Or maybe it's, I don't have to be nice to them. They hurt me and they've never apologized. Really? Is that what scripture says? Be nice after they apologize? Serve them after they treat you right? I don't have to love them. Nobody loves them. We prayed last week that God would send us somebody to serve. I bet he did. Can I make a prediction? In the next week or two, he's going to send you somebody you don't want to serve. Because he's stretching us.
And he's finding out will we serve people that don't fit the criteria. Here's the last blank. Write it in. Jesus wants me to be willing to serve every person in my life. Now we said last week nobody can serve everyone. That's true. But I have to be willing to serve anyone that he puts in my path. That is the heart of a servant. You've probably noticed the last few weeks, we've tried to change the flow of worship where we're going straight from worship to teaching to prayer to more worship. We're trying to not chop it up and have as many interruptions. Thank you for your responsiveness to that. I'm going to ask you to stay with us in this same spirit of worship right now. I want to lead us in family prayer. We take the prayer requests from last week. We pray for all of them as a church staff. Our prayer team prays for all of them. And then we grab a handful. I've grabbed six from last week that I'll share with all of us. The way we do this prayer, if you're up for it, is we stretch a hand out toward the front to indicate that we're praying together. So if you're comfortable with that, join me as I lead this prayer. Father, thank you again for inviting us as sons and daughters, as family, to pray. We come, Lord, in your name. We come as already part of your family. We come because you tell us to pray and invite us to talk to you regularly. So today, Father, we pray for Mike, who's just learned that he has cancer. He doesn't even know what treatment's being advised yet. Father, be his peace, be his healing, be his comfort. Father, we pray for Megan, who's expecting her first baby.
And she's excited and scared spitless at the same time. Make her into the mom you want her to be, Father. Bless that baby. May this be a home where she will come to know Jesus. We pray for Elijah's mom, who's just found out that she has lupus. God, that's a serious diagnosis, but you are in charge. We ask you to show up. We pray for Karen's mom, who's having breathing issues. Lord, I've had those. It's scary when you can't get your breath. I pray today you'd be her breath and her healing and her peace. We pray, Lord, for the many who put on their card last week their request, I want to serve. Help me to serve. We pray for all of us today, Lord, that we would ask for and want the heart of a servant, that we would guard our minds and our hearts from those random thoughts that build into things that get between us and serving the difficult people in our lives. Teach us, Father, to serve. Those are our prayers in Christ. Amen. I'm going to ask you to stand at your feet. Our prayer team is going to be down front. If you want to commit your life to Christ today, come talk to one of them. If you want to pray, if you want somebody to pray for you today, they'll pray for you. Let's worship together. I'm at the altar, dying again, crushed for your purpose, oil within my life, living offering. You are the potter, I am the clay, mold me and make me, Lord, have your way. My heart surrendered to your hand. You can use me, Lord. Oh my God. You can use me, Lord.
