The Exodus in for Us
We ask God to make a way, but what happens when His way looks nothing like we expected?
In the final week of ALL IN His Story, Pastor Eric explores how Israel’s rescue from Egypt points to the freedom Jesus offers us today. If you’re facing uncertainty, feeling stuck, or struggling to leave your past behind, this message will encourage you to trust the One leading you.
You may be out of options, but God isn’t out of power.

I want to welcome you once again To the perfect place for imperfect people Like us to experience the presence of God I'm Eric as we conclude this series that we will continue on for years to come called All In His Story. What we're doing in this series is we're learning to see the story of Jesus in all of scripture. Not just in the four gospels, but from Genesis to Revelation. We're looking to see the story of our Savior throughout all the pages. I wanna ask this question as we begin today. How many of us believe that God can make a way? I mean, we believe it, we say bully. When there is no way God can make a way. Now let me ask this question. How many of us, when God makes a way, are willing to walk in that way? See, we say God make a way, but then when He makes the way, we say, no Lord, not that way. We want the Lord to make a way as long as it's our way, as long as it's comfortable and convenient and easy and exciting. Am I the only one who's willing to admit that? I like my way God, make your way my way. Today we're gonna talk through the story of the flood. I'm kidding, that's already happening around us right now.
I'm gonna talk through the story of the Exodus. And the story of Exodus is a story of a God who rescues His people and teaches them how to trust Him enough to follow His way. In church I'm telling you, as we go through the Exodus, if we can understand the Exodus, we can understand the good news, the gospel of Jesus. Let me pray one more time. Holy Spirit, give us understanding. God, our feet to grow in your faith and help us to see you in everything that happens today. It's in your name we pray. And all God's people said, amen. I've titled today's teaching. The Exodus is for us. The Exodus is for us because the Exodus isn't simply the story of God rescuing Israel. It's His story of how we rescues all of us. And here's where it starts. There's four truths that I want us to understand from the scripture. The first one is this right us down. God saw us and stepped in. He saw us and stepped in. By the time we get to the Exodus in the Bible, God's people, they're living in Egypt. And what began as a place of provision during Joseph's generation, how God rescued His people and gave them a place,
has now become a place of slavery for them. Exodus chapter one verse 13, it says, so they ruthlessly, the Egyptians made the people of Israel work as slaves and made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and brick and in all kinds of work in the field in their work. They ruthlessly made them work as slaves. So for generations, this is all the people have known. They're oppressed, they're suffering and slavery. They're crying out to God. And one day God speaks to Moses. Exodus three, verse seven. Then the Lord said, I've surely seen the reflection of my people who are in Egypt. And I've heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that to a land, a good land, a broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, there's provision here, that there's supplication here. But I want you to notice the language. God said, I have seen, I have heard, I know, and I have come down. Before Israel ever figures out how to get out of Egypt, God says, I've seen, I've heard, I know, and I have come down to get you. Does that sound familiar? Last week we talked about how when Adam and Eve sinned and they hid from God, God came seeking after them. God came searching for them.
Now God's people, they're enslaved and they're incapable of freeing themselves and what God does is he comes to them. He searches for them. We see the gospel, the good news in this story and the good news of Jesus, the good news of our salvation isn't that humanity we climb up to reach God. Now the gospel is that he's come down to be with us. down to be with us and we've seen His glory, glory as of the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. That's what Jesus said. Jesus, He stepped into our Egypt. Now, we may never have been slaves to Egypt like Israel has. But listen what Jesus says in John 834. He says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is what? Is what? A slave to sin." That's our Egypt. It's our sin. Sin separates us from God. And sin doesn't just simply make us bad. Sin makes us bound. That's what Jesus is saying. We're slaves to sin. Sin promises freedom. But eventually we discovered that the thing that we thought we were choosing starts choosing for us. The thing that we thought we could stop whenever we wanted starts leading us. And we can't break it. We thought we were controlling it. And now it's controlling us. And our anger becomes a pattern. The lust becomes an addiction. The bitterness takes root. The lie that we share requires another lie and another lie after that, this need to control starts controlling every decision. That's bondage. That's slavery. And that's what sin does. Sin will always promise us freedom and then put us in chains. Make us bound. And just like Israel couldn't break free from Pharaoh's chains on them. We can't break free from the power of sin over our lives. So we don't need better behavior. We don't need better information. We need a deliverer. And God, He didn't stand at a distance, barking orders, telling us to do better. We see that He came to us. He stepped into our brokenness. He stepped into humanity. He stepped into a world enslaved by sin and death. And He found us and He came to free us. That's the good news of Jesus. That's what He did with Israel. That's what He does with us. But how does He do that? Second truth I want us to see. Write this down. The lamb was sacrificed to save us. The lamb was sacrificed to save us. In Egypt, God, He sends plague after plague after plague. Dismantling and destroying the lowercase g gods of Egypt. He blocks out the sun. He
turns the river red. He sends all these plagues. But Pharaoh still does not release the people. And so God tells Moses there's going to be one final plague. But before it comes, He gives His people a way to be saved from this judgment that is coming. Exodus chapter 12 verse 3. God says, "Speak to all the congregation of Israel saying, on the 10th day of this month, every man shall take a lamb according to their father's houses, a lamb for a household. The way out, the way out of their chains, the way out of their slavery would be through a lamb. But not just any lamb. Exodus 12.5, your lamb shall be without blemish. It is a spotless lamb for seven. And they shall take some of the blood of it and put it on the two doorpost and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. And then God tells them in verse 12, for I will pass through the land of Egypt that night. And I will strike the firstborn in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord. The blood shall be assigned for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood of the lamb, I will pass over you and no plague shall befall you to destroy you. Now, if what we've talked about over the past few weeks is making any sense to you, alarm should start ringing in your heads. We have a spotless lamb. Then the lamb dies. And the blood of this lamb is applied and the blood saves these people from death. Who does that sound like church? Who does that sound like? It's Jesus. This is His story. He's in all of it. Now, I want you to notice what God doesn't say. God doesn't say, "When I come to your house, I'm going to check who's naughty or nice." When I come down, he's gonna make sure that all of you are acting well. No, he says, "When I see the blood on the doorpost, "their salvation wasn't based on how good they were, "wasn't based on their goodness, "it was based under them being under the blood of the lamb." Hundreds of years later, John the baptizer, he sees Jesus walking toward him. Listen to what he says in John 1.29. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold the lamb of God." And what does he do?
He takes away the sin of the world. That's Jesus. He's the lamb that Exodus was pointing to many years prior. And out today when we're reading the story of the Exodus, a lot of us, we didn't see Jesus in that, but this wasn't new to the people during Jesus' time. Listen to what Paul says to the church in Corinth, 1 Corinthians 5, 7. He says, "Cleanse out the old leaven "that you may be a new lump as you are really unleavening." He says, "You've been made new. "You're a new creature, new creation. "Get rid of everything of old for Christ. "Our past over lamb has been sacrificed." Familia, we aren't saved today because God looks at her lives and says, "Man, they're really good. "Oh, they don't lie. "And they're so giving and generous. "We're saved because of what Jesus has done for us. "You don't have to wonder, have I done enough? "Have I been good enough? "Have I given enough? "No, Jesus is enough." Last week, we looked at Adam and Eve. This week, we're looking at the blood of the lamb covering a household and setting the people free from their slavery in Egypt. But setting them free is only the beginning. God setting us free from our slavery is only the beginning.
Third thing I want us to see, write this down. His presence pointed the way. His presence pointed the way. You can write in the present tense. His presence points the way. After that final plague, Pharaoh finally lets the people of God go. Finally, they're free to walk out of their slavery in Egypt and go to the promised land. Here's a problem though. They don't know how to get there, right? They spent years being slaves. They know how to make bricks. They know how to build large, sprawling temples and places for Pharaoh. But they don't know how to get to the land that God promised them. There's no GPS, there's no Google Maps, there's no sign as they're walking saying 237 more miles. Stay to the lane in your rights. No, they have no idea how to get there. So what does God do? God leads them. He doesn't just free them. He leads them church. He doesn't just free us. He leads us. Exodus 13, 21 of the Lord God went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way and by night in a pillar of fire
to give them light that they might travel by day or by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar by night did not depart from before the people. God gives them something that they can see, a cloud by day to lead them. A fire by night to light their way. And scripture says that it did not depart from them. Whether it was day or night where they knew where they were headed this next moment or they didn't, they could look and see the presence of their God was with them always. Maybe some of us in this place right home, we're in a similar place like the people of Israel. We're not where we used to be. Praise God, we're not where we used to be, but we know we're not yet where we're supposed to be. We know God brought us out of something. We just don't know what exactly He's leading us to. We don't know what He's doing next. This is where Israel was. And God didn't give them a map of the entire plan. He gave them something greater. He gave them His presence. I know how you're like, no, no. I don't think that's better. Like, I want to know what the next five years looks like. I want the map of all the steps along the way. Am I going to get the job? We want the master plan. And God says, oh, but I want you to follow me.
We want to know every step of the way. And God says, no, I want you to trust me right now. Trust me today. That's faith. Write this down. Faith isn't knowing every step. Faith is taking the next step because you know who's leading you. Familiar, if you belong to Jesus, you have something far greater than a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire. I know it may look amazing, but what we have is far greater. We have the presence of the living God with us, and in us always because of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, He never promised that we would know everywhere the road is going, but He did promise us we will never walk it alone, that He's with us always, even until the end of the age. So maybe we should adjust our prayers. Maybe we should stop praying. God, show me the whole plan. Show me everything before I take the next step. And we should change our prayer to God, show me the next step. And give me the faith to follow you day by day. Show me my next step and give me the faith to walk in it every single day. Amen? Four of you said, amen. No, no, I get it. A lot of us, we don't actually want God to lead us.
That's the reality. We don't want God to lead us. What we want is for God to endorse the life we've already chosen, to endorse the direction we've already decided to go. Or let me make the decision. Let me choose a relationship. Let me take the jollum. Let me spend the money the way that I think we should spend the money. And then we pray, God, will you bless this? Will you bless this life after we've already built everything? Jesus is not an accessory that we add on to the life that we've already chosen. Jesus is Lord. And if Jesus is Lord, then He gets to lead us. And yes, sometimes He'll lead us to places that we would not have chosen for ourselves. And yes, sometimes He'll lead us somewhere that doesn't make sense until we get to the other side. But if God is leading us, that means His presence is always going with us. If His presence is always with us and His power and His purpose is there as well. And Israel, they're about to learn this firsthand. Because where does this cloud eventually lead them to the Red Sea? Remember that part of the Exodus story? Did you watch Prince of Egypt? Don't miss that.
They didn't end up at the Red Sea because they missed the presence of God. They ended up there because they were following the presence of God. They followed the cloud. They followed the presence of God and where did it lead them? It led them to a place where there's a sea in front of them and an army behind them and nowhere else to go. Church, write this down. Sometimes God will lead you to a place where you can't make a way. Why? So He can show you that He can. If you're stuck, His power is still with His presence. Fourth truth, write this down. His power parted the sea and protected His people. His power parted the Red Sea and protected His people. God leads Israel toward the Red Sea. And Pharaoh, He changes His mind and He chases after them to bring them back into slavery. Listen to what happens, Exodus 14-9. The Egyptians pursued them in all of Pharaoh's horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army. They overtook them and camped at the sea. And when Pharaoh drew near the people of Israel, they lifted up their eyes and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel, they cried out to the Lord. They basically say to God and to Moses,
"Why did you lead us out here to die?" They literally say, "Were they not?" Listen, Moses' response, verse 13, Moses said to the people, "Fear not, don't be afraid. Stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you'll never see again. The Lord will fight for you. You only have to be silent." He stands there with boldness and confidence and says, "Don't be afraid. The Lord will fight for you." Church, when you don't see a way forward, don't confuse men. I don't know what to do with God doesn't know what to do. You may be out of options, but it certainly doesn't mean that God is, right? They couldn't fight the army. They couldn't cross the sea. They couldn't save themselves. They couldn't make a way, but they didn't have to. They had to trust the one who could make a way. And in that moment, they stood firm, they stood silent, and they saw the Lord. X14, 21, Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove back the sea by a strong East wind, and it made the sea dry land. And the waters were divided, and the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground. The waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. God, he tears apart to sea. He leads them to walk on the deep ocean floor. But don't miss this. The presence of God that had been before them, that had been leading them, changes positions 1st 19th. Then the angel of God, who was going before the host of Israel, moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them, and stood behind them, coming
between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness, and it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night. The presence that led them became the same presence that protected them. God was in front, leading them, saying, "Follow me." And then when they feared what was behind them, when they had enemies coming in from behind them, God came behind them and says, "I got that too." The same is true with us today. So many of us were fearing what's behind us. What happened behind us is paralyzing us from taking steps forward. The church, we can't let what happened behind us keep us from moving forward to what God has for us. You've been forgiven of all your sin, but so many of us, we still carry the shame of the past. You've been set free, but you're still thinking like a slave, thinking you have to please these people, and work hard for these people, and work hard for God. Jesus left Egypt, but Egypt is still in your mind, the mentality is still in your mind. The church, Jesus didn't set us free so we could spend the rest of our life looking over our shoulder. What held you has no authority over you anymore? Turn your neighbor, tell him that, say, "What held you before has no authority anymore." In other words, if Jesus has set you free, you are free indeed. So just keep walking forward. Turn your neighbor, tell him, just keep moving forward. Tell him God knows how to deal with what's behind you. Exodus 14, 26, "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, upon their horsemen." And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared. The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen of all the hosts of Pharaoh
that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remains. You'll never see them again, that was true, it was prophetic. God made a way where there was no other way, and the same sea that looked like their graveyard became their place of victory. And then Israel does something that all of us should do, they do exactly what we should do when God brings us out of something that we could not have done on our own. What is that? They worship. X is 15 verse 1, then Moses and the people of Israel. saying, "I will sing to the Lord for He is triumph gloriously, and the horse and his rider have been thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise Him. My Father's God, and I will exalt Him." They basically sang out, "God, we won't forget." We were slaves, but you found us, you freed us. You led us, you fought for us. You tore part to sea, standing in our way. You led us through the deep. And now we're standing on the other side, singing about what you've done. That's what they did in church. That's what we're to do. Exodus isn't simply Israel's story of salvation. It's His story. It's His story of salvation. And because it's Jesus' story, that means it's also our salvation. Jesus, He stepped into our Egypt.
The Lamb of God was sacrificed. His blood made a way. He took us by the hand and brought us out of slavery. He led us by His presence, and He fights battles that we can't win on our own. That's what He's done for us. Listen what Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter 15. Verse 44, he says, "When the imperishable does us, puts on the imperishable, when mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass as saying that is written. Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where's your victory? O death, where's your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law, but thanks be to God. Let's give God praise who gives us victory from sin and death to our Lord Jesus Christ. Church, if you have trusted Jesus, you are free, and those who the Son makes free are free indeed. Sin doesn't own you anymore. Your past doesn't get the final word. Shame doesn't get the final word. Even death has lost its sting. All of us die one day, but for those of us in Christ, we know death is not the end. Death is the beginning of eternity in the presence of our heavenly Father. I told our worship team, we should take that song from Exodus and turn it into a song, and someone reminded me, there's already a song about it.
So we're gonna sing another song about how God found us, came to us, he rescued us, he freed us. And as we sing, if that is not yet your story, if you have yet to surrender to this God who has done all the work through his son, Jesus, to set you free from your sin, then I would encourage you to come forward and get prayer. As we sing this song of victory of how God has rescued us, if there's something in your life that seems impossible or insurmountable, if there's a sea in front of you that you don't know how to cross and everything in your past seems to be catching up to you, I would encourage you to come forward as well and receive prayer, believing that he's done everything. All we must do is believe and receive. I'm gonna ask you to stand your feet right now. I'm gonna ask for prayer partners to come forward. There's a prayer card in the seat back in front of you, and every week we pray for every single need by name. Online, there's a prayer wall. We pray for every one of those needs, every week by name. Today, there's a prayer quest that we can continue to pray for you, fill that out. But our prayer partners are up here right now. And we wanna pray. We wanna seek our God who has the answers. We wanna trust the one who knows the way, even though we may not know the way. We wanna surrender ourselves, the times where we try to fight our battles and lead the way, and God made a way,
but it's not my way, so I'm gonna do it my way. Today, we're gonna surrender. We're gonna sing a song of thanksgiving for the victory he's won. I'm gonna pray right now for some of these prayer quests that were submitted last week. And if you have a prayer quest, if you need someone to come alongside you, if you just need to surrender yourself, you can come forward, you can pray with someone, you can just come forward and worship for the rest of us. we're gonna sing the song of victory together. And I pray that it's not just a song on our lips, I pray that it's the declaration of our heart, our gratitude for this God who has done everything. Father, thank you, Lord. As you are moving among this place and in the hearts of people, some of us, Father, we feel a sense of shame and insecurity, and we're afraid of what others might think. God, I pray that you would just release us of all of that, that we can get the help that we need from you. Lord, and as we gather together, you said that when we gather that you're here in our midst, that you hear our prayers, so Lord, we pray for these requests, we pray for Graham, that you just continue to bring healing in his body after this procedure. And as he prepares for marriage, Lord, that every thought of his health challenges God,
it would be in the past. He would know that you are with him always. I pray right now, for my friends Heather and Jared, as they are fundraising for an incredible move of God, I pray, Lord, that you provide everything that they need and more, that they would see your faithfulness as they seek your face. I pray for Jessie, and as she's seeking a job that would freer up on Sundays to come and to be with her Church Famillion worship together, God, I pray you to open up that door. Only you can open up doors. So would you do that in her life, she trusts you. We pray right now for Sebastian, God, that you bring continued healing and hope in his life and in his family's God, as the doctors are still trying to figure out what's happening within his body. Lord, you are the great physician. You already know and you love him Lord, so I pray that your healing hand, we continue to be a pawnup. Prayer right now for David, as he is searching for another job after being employed and terminated from a place that he invested so much of his life. Would you let him know that you're not done with him? That you love him, and that you are leading him to exactly where he needs to be. Give him faith to follow, and for all of us, Lord, thank you, Jesus, for making a way. We repent for going our way, for not walking in your way,
but today, we're saying we're done with that. We will follow you wherever you lead. Give us that faith to take the next step, 'cause you are worthy. Thank you for all you've done. You are worthy, it's in your name we pray. All the people have got sent. Come on, church, can we thank Pastor Aaron, for bringing that word out of his voice, Father. ♪ I won't forget the wonders how you brought ♪ ♪ The liver ends, the exodus of my heart ♪ ♪ You found me free me, held back the waters ♪ ♪ From my wings, oh, yeah, I win ♪ ♪ You're the part who fights for me ♪ ♪ Lord of every victory, hallelujah ♪ ♪ Hallelujah ♪ ♪ You have torn apart the sea ♪ ♪ You have led me through the peace ♪ ♪ Hallelujah ♪ ♪ Hallelujah ♪ ♪ The cup of our day is a sign that you are with me ♪ ♪ The Father, my night ♪ ♪ Is the guiding us of my feet ♪ ♪ You found me free me, held back the waters ♪ ♪ From my wings, oh, yeah, I win ♪ ♪ You're the part who fights for me ♪ ♪ Lord of every victory, hallelujah ♪ ♪ Hallelujah ♪ ♪ You have torn apart the sea ♪ ♪ You have led me through the deep hallelujah ♪

(upbeat music) We're just saying this song, like the people of Israel did after God led them out of their slavery, to where he had them next. We titled today's teaching, "The Exodus is for us," but when I say for us, I don't just mean us here in this room, us here in this church, familiar at home. John the baptizer saw Jesus, he says, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away our sin," no, he says, "the sin of the world." When you walked in today, you have that survey, and we'd love for you to fill that out before you leave today, but the other thing that was on your seat is a bookmark. And on that bookmark, there is a blank. On that blank, I want you right now, grab that bookmark and write just one name, not your name, this isn't taking ownership. This isn't a bookmark so that it can be a placeholder in your Bible. I want this to be a placeholder for your prayers for your one, that one that you know and love, that does not yet know the love of Jesus, write down their name. Next week, we're starting a new teaching series where we're going to learn how to build a beautiful world of purpose through this lost art of gratitude that so many of us have forgotten specifically in this country and in South Florida. And we're going to talk a whole lot about our ones over the next several weeks. We're going to talk about what we're doing so that we can see our ones saved and set free. And next year, we'll continue to talk through the story of Jesus through every story in the Bible.
Today, we have a lot of Scripture, and I want you to continue to read Scripture. We've been bringing our physical Bibles to church so that we can open up His Word and study it together. And so, I want this bookmark to be where you hold your place in the Bible, but also hold their place in prayer. And when you read the New Testament, you see what Jesus has done to remember that this is for my one as well. And when you look through the Old Testament, you see the shadows of Jesus coming alive through every story of His story that you remember. He has come for my one as well. I don't want us to be so comfortable and celebrate those who come even on a rainy Sunday morning that we forget those who are not yet here. We can't grow comfortable and simply being saved. There's still some that need our Savior. I truly believe this. I believe that if we do our part, starting with simply writing down their name and remembering them in prayer. I believe one day those people that we've written down their name will be standing next to us, worshipping Him one day. That prodigals will come home one day. You don't know them. They used to follow Jesus, but now they're atheists. They've been so hurt by the church. You don't know their situation. They're so addicted, so deep into sin. I may not know, but I do know my God who can do the impossible. So let's believe for them right now. Take that bookmark before you put in your Bible. Let's hold it up. Let's say that name and let's pray in faith for them. Let's believe God for what is impossible, that just like He set us free, that He will use us to see them set free as well. Father, thank you so much for our ones. Thank you, God, that you so love them. God, our heart breaks every time we think of them. But Lord, your heart is so much more full and heavy for them, God. So we agree with you. We come alongside each other and your promises and your word, and we pray for our ones. We pray for our sons and daughters, our spouses, our friends, our family, our coworkers, our neighbors. We pray Jesus that you would set them free, that they would see your love, that they would see it through our lives, and that you would use us to help point them to you. Thank you for what you've done in our life, Lord. And now we believe for them. As someone believed for us, God, we're believing for them, that they will come to faith in you. Do the impossible. As only you can do, break the unbreakable, meet them where they're at. In Jesus' name, we pray. And all God's people said, come on church and celebrate one more time. Let's sing a song of faith and hope that God can do the impossible. Do you believe in church? He's done in your life. Do you believe he can do the impossible through your life as well? Let's think about it.
They say this mountain can be moved. They say the chains won't ever break. But they don't know you like we do. There is power in your name. We've heard that there is no way through. We've heard the tide will never change. They haven't seen what you can do. There is power in your name. There's so much power in your name. Hold the immovable, break the unbreakable, that we believe, that we believe for it. From the impossible, we'll see a miracle, that we believe. God, we believe for it. Come on, listen, we know that hope. We know that hope is never lost. For there is still an empty grave. God, we believe no matter what. There is power in your name. Come on, come with your kind of so much power. There's so much power in your name. For there is still an empty grave. Come on, listen, we believe, we believe, that we believe for it.
