Summer Stories — Lucas & Haelea Walker

Welcome to Summer Stories. I'm so excited that you're gonna be sharing tonight your story. We have been friends for a while now. Our families hang out, and y'all have just become such great friends to us, and our boys run around and play together. Would you please just introduce yourselves, give us a little introduction, who you are, what's your name, tell us about your family. I'm Haley Walker, I'm 27. I'm the youngest of four, and I'm the only one in my family who is a follower of Jesus. Come on, first generation Christian, hallelujah. I'm Lucas Walker, I come from a good home, mama and dad, I have an older brother and sister. We were raised in church, and us together, we have a three-year-old named Ranson. He is a perfect little boy. Yes, he's so sweet. He loves to run around with my little boy too. And he's gonna be tall like his daddy. I think so. Yeah, how tall are you, Lucas? Six foot eight. It's just a tiny little six foot eight man. I actually, right before church, they were playing basketball, and his son was dunking on the hoop at three years old.

So just to give you perspective for that. So Lucas, tell us a little bit about your past, where you came from, and where that led you to. Uh, like I said, family good, but my dad got sick whenever I was like 13. So he couldn't really play the dad figure. He was battling with his health. So I ended up taking a turn, you know, wrong friends, doing all the wrong things. I got into like, like heavy drugs, powder cocaine, whenever I was 14. And where we grew up was primarily Hispanic. So at the time I didn't know it, but I learned whenever I turned like 16, that we were playing with the cartel. So done that for, I was, and I got arrested whenever I was 15, and got my first felony. And then from then, I just didn't see any hope. I figured this was my life. This was it, I chose it. I've just got to make the best of it. So instead of turning and running, I just jumped two feet in, and went as hard as I could go. Ended up getting into a gang whenever I was 16, and doing my first actual prison bid whenever I was 18. It was short, two years. Just two years. Just two, that was the little one.

That was like whenever they're introducing you to the pool as a kid. They're like, we're gonna let you splash around in the kiddie pool, and see if you enjoy it. And then if you get out, and you still continue to live that life, then we'll throw you in the deep end. And that's what eventually happened. So two years locked up at 18. Yeah. And so you come out at 20, and then what happens? Immediately went back to selling drugs. Really, it just, I had a lot of hate in my heart. I was mad at everybody. Blamed everybody. They should have done this, and maybe I wouldn't be here. I just couldn't see a way out. I just couldn't figure it out. And whenever you're living that life, you're by yourself. There might be 20 people in a room, but you're alone. So a lot of pain, a lot of hurt. And it showed in the way I was living. It didn't matter who you were. I would just run over you. And that's just who I was. And really did not like who I was. Whenever I was like 22, I turned to alcohol heavy. Real heavy. Started drinking from six in the morning until sometimes six the next morning.

Wow. Because with the drugs I was using, they kept you up continuously. So sometimes I would drink 48 hours straight before I even went to bed. Wow. Still run around the streets dirty, nasty, just really ugly. It's just an ugly life all the way around. And the people around you in that life will say, you know, you're okay because misery loves company. And they just, they want to keep you around because occasionally you can help them. They're just out for what they can take from you. There's no love in that life. I didn't know love until I had a son. Because I always just thought, she's looking at you right now like, hello. Me and her have even had this conversation. I'm open with her. She knows I have past trauma. She knows I was a broken human being. And I didn't, I couldn't understand it because growing up, you know, people say, love you, whenever the world turns their back on you, who really meant it? Like what's love mean? It's just a word that people say to each other that's supposed to make me feel better or try to draw me close to them just so they can leave me later. I mean, that was the way I looked at it. That was the way I viewed love. It was just a word that nobody meant, that everyone said to each other. So I didn't really interact with love until a lot later on in life. Some would say recently. So running around, really rough life, like on the streets, drinking nonstop, and where

did that lead you to? That led me to, and right before I went, I was, me and her were dating, like right before I got in major trouble. I got arrested for a lot of charges, felony manufacturing, maintaining and dwelling, selling delivery, and they gave me six years, seven months, and 25 days. Who's counting? So I went ahead, took it, and I took it. They gave it to me. You have to take it. I would have loved to have gave it back and said, all right. I return this sentence. You take it. Yeah, like, that was funny, guys, but that wasn't the way it happened. They gave me my time, and this time I'm not going to You Spirits. I'm going to the big yard. So I didn't know what to expect. You hear all these stories. So if anybody ever says, like, oh, I was going, I wasn't nervous, not scared. You are. You're riding that bus, and you have no idea what to expect. So I get down there, immediately I go ahead and find the people I'm with, and my entire prison bid, just to let everyone know I did not go to prison, and then change my life over and walk away and find God. For about six years of it, I was still doing the gang activity, stayed in trouble the entire prison bid, in and out of the solitary confinement, and six months to nine months before I got out, well, a year before I got out, this man named Michael Turley, I hope he doesn't mind me saying his name. If he does, it's done, done. He wrote me a letter, and somehow, I still don't know the exact, but him and my brother came in contact, and they, Michael spoke to him about, you know, what they were trying

to do in Tennessee, so my brother was like, hey, I have, you know, the perfect candidate, my brother is actually in prison. So he wrote me a letter and said what he had to offer, you know, and it wasn't like, nothing fancy, safe place, Christian home, and mainly a place so I could stop and think about what I wanted to do. Because when you're gone for that long, you can literally do whatever you want to do. You have no friends. The couple people you do talk to, which was one, my dad, I talked to him every day I was in there. So it was me and him and Michael Turley. That was, that was what I had. Yeah. And come to find out, that was all I needed. Amen. Yeah, I got saved in solitary confinement six to nine months before I came home. I got in a lot of trouble with drugs in there. And they put me in a, in a solitary confinement cell. and the radio they give you. I had the only cell that didn't pick up radio stations except for this one radio station and it was 106 the light FM 106 the light yeah shout out to 106 hey 106 and so you're in solitary confinement I mean I've never been so I'm learning so much so solitary confinement and all you got is a radio with one Christian station tuning in and that's it okay I'm really mad about the whole situation I bet I don't want to be there I do not like this radio station I'm like oh my gosh but after you're in there for a while finally kind of break down how long how long do they put you in there I don't like I don't have any grid for this solitary yeah it depends on what you're in trouble for all right what they picked me up for was an investigation of the drugs so they were seeing it was a holy ghost setup is what it was yeah so well that time I was in there like 60 days Wow yeah I've done a bunch of those 60 days so that's why you're just so resilient now working

like 18-hour days you're like this is nothing no nothing yeah no okay one thing I know that my past life taught me is pain I know pain and this is not it yeah this is true defined glory amen and forgiveness yes yeah but while I was in there it's still crazy to me how it happened me and this one radio station I do not like but all you have I counted it you can take about five steps up one step over and then there's a toilet so you can only take about three steps back so that's your circle you get to walk all day long and eventually that guy gets old so I'm gonna listen to some music so I started listening to this music I didn't like but I just listened to the beats well at 530 every day they do speakers like tip I think Tony Parker Tony Evans he was my favorite so I started listening to these guys and just one day God wrecked me in there just complete I remember it was kind of cloudy there's a window it's about that wide and that's what you get to look out and most of the time all you're looking at is the fence so while I'm looking at it I look up and in the sky there's just this cloud and it was like something's looking over me and I smacked the ground and that was it I knew I needed to change because if I would have been on the street and been in the same trouble I've been in in here yeah I just be stuck in there because I was facing a lot of time and was really blessed with the six years and seven months that I did yeah like I was completely happy with it when I got my time I was smiling because I thought it was about to get really bad yeah Wow praise the Lord I mean isn't that amazing like meets Jesus in solitary confinement like through the radio station that he didn't want to let's do like I love that man it's so good and meanwhile like God was already setting you up through your brother and the Turley's that then when you get out you were gonna have a Christian place to live so okay talk to us about that like you get out and you know then what happens well I get out and I had to stay in North Carolina for like two weeks because they were transferring parole and all that stuff and we were making sure you know Michael's house was like I had a place to stay and everything was okay well everything got set up and I actually pushed it back a little bit

because I reached out to her just to see what she was doing whenever I went to prison that's a long time I expect nobody to stay around like go we didn't have no kids so go live your life like I'll be back sometime so I reached out to her and you get out you're like hey girl pretty much so she was at work and she'd got clean on her own freewill yeah she didn't have to be put on punishment like me I'm hard-headed I learned different so I reached out to her she came over I told her like cuz I thought she's gonna oh no you're leaving we'll never see each other she said get out of here like leave now I'm like okay whenever you're from a small place like we're from Luke's just too big like and it's not his size it's his personality the person that he is he was always too big for a place like that and I knew that if he stayed it would just continue the same cycle that it did that led him to prison the last time So whenever he said, oh, I have a chance to go to Tennessee. I said you better go. This is your chance That's so good. The Lord is telling you. Bye She said bye She's cool with the plan. Hey, so I was like that's like an opening Like I'm I can go clear conscience. We're good. We're on good terms like Because I might have her might not have brought her into that lifestyle and So I go to the Michael Turley's and Michael Turley the people online don't know him but the people sitting here do I Couldn't have got put in a better home. Yes For someone like me to end up with someone like him At first I didn't know how to take him Because he's a lot he's a lot I came Yeah, I came from confinement and gangbanging to Michael Turley Yeah, just and whenever you watch a man like that consistently and You see that there's no fake in his game like there's There's not one time he's ever gonna not be the way he is

So just his consistency Yeah, help me. Yeah, just watching him day after day after day Push to do the same thing and love Jesus Was proof to me you're in the right spot Yeah, he taught me a lot by just watching him just looking what he was doing, but he also He extended his hand Gave me a place to live Made sure I didn't need anything and if I did I'll have to do a say something They took me out to eat so much I gained like 20 pounds the first two weeks Yeah, I was leaning back. I was like man, but uh Yeah, it took me to prayer groups introduced me to People that would later on Really helped me a lot Yeah, he's well connected in the community Yeah, and everyone loves Michael true. So the people he plugged me in with later helped my business to thrive What else oh That's amazing. I mean, I'm I remember like the beginning of that journey and so, you know Mike for those who don't know Michael and Leah Turley they had formed a nonprofit called the acorn house and The goal was to get you know, a little acorn or two like, you know little tiny Lucas over here. I Told Leah last night. I said you got a big giant acorn tree now and and help disciple them when they get out of jail or prison and Lucas was the test guinea pig and I think we've got some great fruit here in a big giant acorn tree named Lucas Walker And so so okay. So now you're out and you're at the Turley's house Let's let's pass it over to miss Haley here We want to hear so how he said right that you went ahead and just got clean by your own volition or or what? So what happened like how did that happen? How'd you come to meet Jesus? Okay, let's let's back it up a little bit. So whenever he went to prison He didn't expect me to stick around and I did not I Ended up in a relationship with this other guy who was abusive

and It lasted for like two two and a half years and it was terrible. It was awful And we broke up and I got with this other guy. So why he was in prison I was in two different relationships now me and this guy we weren't abusive towards each other, but we used together For those of you who don't know I started smoking weed whenever I was 13 and I started using meth whenever I was Almost 16 and so me and him we use meth together And it was it was terrible as well because in everybody well anybody who has been in a relationship while you're using it's just a bad relationship But I got a job working at Hardee's making minimum wage and I threw myself into it And I was still using for most of the time that I worked there And then I got I quit there and I started working at Speedway which is a gas station they put me on third shift and Me and him had broken up and I was just tired whenever you do it for as long as I've done it you get tired and I was there at like three o'clock in the morning at the gas station that only crackheads come to at that time and I prayed, I was like, Lord, I've done this my way for as long as I've done it my way, and it has been terrible. You know, I actually grew up in church, but it was more of a babysitter for my parents. It was somewhere for them to send us to so they could use without us being there, because my whole family's users, the whole family. And so while we went to church, it was really hard going to church and hearing people say, oh, you know, Jesus is great, following him is amazing, and then going home and seeing not greatness. So at three o'clock in the morning, Jesus spoke to me and he said,

follow me and I will show you the way to greatness. And so I moved in with my sister and I started going to church and it was completely different than what I had been doing. At this point, I didn't think I could even have kids. My life was finally going in the right direction. And then Luke pops up. Hey. We had not talked in six years, seven months and 25 days. So he messaged me on Facebook and he was like, what are you doing? And I'm like, I'm at work. It's three o'clock in the morning. And we got to talking and he moved down here and then I moved in with his dad. And just so we're clear, I love his dad. His dad is one of my favorite people along with his step-mom. They're like my parents. And he's like their in-law's son. I feel like the son-in-law when I'm over there. I said, he feels like the son-in-law when he's over there with his dad. Because they love her so much. They do. I'm just wonderful. Yes. But no, I moved in with his dad for the whole time that I was pregnant.

And just so you know, finding out I was pregnant was a surprise. Like I said, I didn't think I could have kids. And then Luke gets out and he got out April 16th of 2022. And by July 4th, I was pregnant. That's like three months, not even. It didn't take very long. It did not take long at all. So to- You didn't have to add it up for everybody. To say I was surprised is an understatement. But just the fact that I had already been in these two relationships and never had anything happen. To look back, once I got clean and I started to follow in Jesus, I looked back and I realized that even whenever I didn't follow Jesus, he had his protection on my life. Like he protected me from so much. And then turned around and he gave me the best. Luke is a wonderful husband. He's a great dad. He is a one, you know, I will follow him to the end of the earth because he will never lead me to a place that is not good. Yeah. And so, you know, the fact that it all led to that, to me, is my testimony. Because the Lord protected me

and gave me the absolute best. And he led me here to all these wonderful people. You know what I'm saying? Your wife is like my best friend. I love your kids. I love, you know, I spend time down in the kids' church and I never thought ever that my life would be what it is. And the fact that it is so wonderful is completely because of Jesus. Yes, yes, yes. That's so good. Amen. Now you passed her the mic and she just started preaching. I was really just letting her, I mean, it was good. It was good. Just let her cook. I didn't even know this stuff. It's good to be every time. It's so good. It's so good. Okay, so, all right. So you're here. I'm looking through my questions. We've already talked about some of this. All right, so. Sorry. No, this is great. So, all right. Now y'all, you're both following Jesus. You get married, okay?

And so tell us, like, what does life look like today? You've got Ranson at home. Like, what are you guys doing? What's Jesus doing in your life? I'm gonna start from we first get down here, about. Back it up. No, no, no. About five months after we were here, I'm really in, we're in the old church. If anybody that was there, it had a lot, yeah, a lot of life, a lot of character. Oh, yeah. It was special. Yes. So, while I'm there, I'm listening to Matty. He's doing his marriage sermons. So, I realize I'm wrong in what I'm doing immediately. Like, I have her, but we're not married. So, I wanted to immediately covet that with God and that way we have an honorable relationship in front of him. We did that. Tied the knot and And I some people he tied the knot of miss Belkis's house Belka's on the porch The Sam was the flower boy Sorry, these are great details. We have the pictures to prove it So good Michael Turley was the pastor. Awesome. Yes Um So some people around the church started asking me like hey, can you cut my grass? I have a lawnmower Hey, can you put a floor in?

So my whole life i'd kind of on drugs. You just do random stuff for people So I know how to do like a lot of unimportant things um And back whenever I was on drugs, she can vouch. I've worked a 10-hour day for like 20 30 Um That's bad pay For the kids in the room that don't know that's real bad So I started helping out people. Well, what that did was, you know, they told somebody and then they told somebody And then now you got a wife to take care of and a baby on the way. Yeah And at at that time she was in north carolina And she had a job and I didn't So she was actually saving all the money. Yeah, she lived with my dad, you know, so she could save everything Me i'm still trying to figure it out. Um But god kind of figured it out for me. Hey Yeah, I just kept saying yes and Going on youtube and figuring out how to do everything. Come on And a couple people from outside the church with businesses found out what I was doing and one of them's an electrician So he was like, hey, do you do drywall? And yes, I do Yes, sir Never done it in my life No, i've never even saw anyone drywall I have no idea Not a clue So i'm at home whenever I started my business. I was at the house in the bed researching. Yeah, just research What tools do I need? How do you do it? Like just how like what to do it was everything. Yeah, so and I'd show up the next day with everything that youtube told me to

And I would do it and I learned that they're kind of right, but you got to switch a couple things To get there, but we need to get you a youtube channel. That's what we need I've been looking at those meta band glasses. Oh, yeah Yeah, because I don't have time to video but if I just had the glasses, I think I could get it done There you go. I was looking I was looking at him on lunch at lunch today um yeah, but After I've done so much and and my prices I was still dirt cheap. I was not 30 a day, right? I have a kid on the way, right? But I was you know the base, right? I was just a handyman Figuring life out kind of going with the flow And I got really good at this stuff Like I found out I just had a knack and I remember in the bible, you know It says that we're all created in the image of god, you know traits of god. Jesus was a carpenter. That's right so I think I have that part of him. Hey, come on. Can't nobody convince me. Otherwise. Hey And yeah, because for someone to have never built anything even my dad one day I was talking to him on the phone He's like who taught you how to do all this, right? I was like, I don't know. I guess god it's just in me if I see it I can build it. Uh, I have a vision Uh, so I used it to my advantage And just kept pushing and without her I probably would have shut my business down a long time ago Because starting a business I thought it's not create your own hours It was i'm working all the time Like the only time i'm not working is if i'm asleep for a couple hours And I would get you know down And she's like look god didn't bring you this far She just completely shut everything down. Yeah She was like just keep going just keep doing what you're doing like you'll have a breakthrough Just keep going because it goes up and down because my business depends on the economy who needs something done Right, you know if everyone's broke and you know scared to spend a dollar. Yeah

Holidays are the worst but um, you know, she's she just kept kept giving me words To keep me focused and keep me going And it eventually led into a hard task of getting my contractor's license Because I had to get references which this church went above and beyond and bombarded me with reference letters to give to the board of contractors because they had never seen anyone apply for a For a contractor's license with that long of a record. Wow Yeah, they were like, hey, you know, if you had like a felony or two, like, that's normal. But I've got like seven pages. Yeah, so they're like, you know, we're gonna need like some help, some references, some character references. Yes. So I put it on Facebook and thought, you know, I might get a couple. We all wrote letters. I got over 100. Wow. Over 100 recommendation letters. I got them from people I'd forgot about, from Texas, Florida, Georgia. Ended up having a judge vouch for me, actually my sentencing judge. Yeah, it was it was just crazy. God has been intertwined with everything I've tried to do. Even the stuff that's been shut down. God was helping me out. Yeah. Because I wanted to cut grass because I was like, I've cut grass my whole life. I'm a professional grass gutter. And we go to the bank and they shut me down, oh, like completely just all doors closed. There's there's you can't do it, like no matter what you go do, we're not going to give this

to you. But they gave me a business credit card and I'm like, why would you give me that? It wouldn't give me the loan because the credit card was more than the loan I wanted. So I'm like, OK, I guess I'll take it. So now I have this credit card. And what it turned into was now I can take jobs and buy my own material, right? God was advancing what I was already doing and shutting down stuff that I did not need to be doing. Yeah. Yeah. He literally and he probably knows that I'm a hard learner. So he was like, I better just shut this off, just kill it now, because he'll yeah, because he'll sit there and beat his head against that wall. So I'm just going to completely shut it down, make no hope for it. So he keeps going that way. Yeah. And it's happened a couple of times. Like I'm on a hallway and these doors are padlocked, bolted. There's no getting in. So I just kept going down this path, just straight and steady. And it ended up just all working out. I mean, God really, I never imagined we would be in this position. Never. Sometimes we ride down the road and I'm like, can you believe this is us? Like, no one saw this coming. I didn't see this coming. My mama definitely didn't see this coming. It's just unreal. Yeah. And I want to make it a point, God says if he does it for one, he'll do it for all.

Yes. So even if you think you're the bottom of the barrel, God doesn't like you. I thought God didn't like me. I mean, because I've seen people get blessed. I mean, I've seen people, you know, turn their lives around and do good. But I found out when your heart's not postured in the right position, it's not going to work out. Like, if you hold on to that past life and you just squeeze on to anything from it, that's what will hold you back. Me moving to Tennessee released me from everything. It just, just complete freedom. I'm not holding on to nothing because I know nobody over here. And the only people I've met were the ones Michael introduced me to. So God really entrusted him with a big job. I mean, because whatever Michael was doing, I was going to be doing. And he, he put me with the best person ever. Yeah. Yeah. Because Michael introduced me to all the right people that all were, you know, following Jesus wholeheartedly. They weren't, you know, doing stuff over here, but then just keeping face with people. These people were actually like true believers, something I'd never seen before. Because where we come from, it's not like this at all. Like, not even the churches. It's just deeply embedded drug problem and drinking. You know, it's one of those show up on Sunday, look good. Sunday through Saturday, you can do whatever you want. Just Sunday be there. And that's kind of the way I thought everybody was. I wasn't expecting anything different out of the altar fellowship.

And I pray we don't have anybody out here like that. I'm looking. Not the people I was around. I mean, because we have a lot of men in here. Yeah. Like when I first moved here, Rich Hartman stuck out to me. Was it his height or the loud voice or it was German? Yeah, I felt like we had a thing. I even told a couple people, I'm like, he's my dad. Yeah, because he was the only big guy in the church. And you make him look less big. Yeah, I try my best. I don't let him stand uphill. Yeah, but there was a lot of good guys to look up to. And the one thing that all these men had in common were these wives, happy. You could, you could tell there was, it's good. It's good. Don't hold back. You could tell there was no stress at their home. Yeah. So it's like, man, I want that. Yeah. Like, I want that. And I remember Maddie going like over a couple things like, uh, what make people break up? Like not talking about everything, finances, stuff like that. So whenever God entrusted me with money, I made sure to let her know, like, this is what we got. Yeah. This is all of it. I've got it here, here, here, and here. I'm doing this, this, and that, but this is it. Like you can have it. You're on, you're on everything. Like, I don't want that to get in the way of anything. That's good. Yeah. The stuff I learned from Pastor Maddie. Yeah. Putting it into practice. Has made her happy. Hey, good. That's so good. I mean, it's amazing like to see like where y'all have come from and like now what the Lord is doing, you know, like I think it's, it's easy to hear their story and be like, oh man, like they just got out of the drugs. It's like, man, these guys are blessing people, loving on people. They love to serve. They love to help. They love to lend a hand, uh, whatever the Lord has put on their hearts. They're always the first to sign up, uh, with that. And you know, Luke's not a handyman anymore. I mean, he's a contractor, licensed state of Tennessee contractor. So those of y'all that need some serious work done, not just hanging pictures, but some serious work done, he and his crew, if they ever get any free time can bid you in. It's some serious work and they do good work. So man, we love you guys. Like so proud of what the Lord has done and what you guys surrendered like to get there. It's so beautiful. Um, and like, I was just thinking about like, it's, you know, one of the just most beautiful stories of fruit

from this house. And you know, it's so cool like to see like how it just started with Michael Turley writing a letter, you know, he's, he's written a lot of letters to guys in prison, you know, but here you all are and your whole lives changed. You have beautiful family. And so we love your family. We're so thankful that you guys are here and you know, what y'all are doing and like the, the faith that you bring into this house. And like, I know Ranson will continue to, he'll jump off y'all shoulders. He's never going to know a life, not following the Lord. You know, he's been in the church since day one. He's hearing about Jesus and he's seeing it at home. Like he's got friends around him like that are showing him the real deal. Mom and dad aren't using at home. Like some of the way y'all grew up. Right. And it's like, he has seen what God designed family to look like. And that is so beautiful. Y'all changing the generations for your family. So we're so grateful for you guys. Can we just, did you want to say anything else before, before I close it? You want to say anything? Tell him now. It's literally my only goal when having Ranson was to make sure that he did not grow up like I grew up. You know, Luke's home life was better than mine, but I see my nieces and my nephews going through the same thing, same thing that I went through growing up and it breaks my heart. But that's literally the only thing that I prayed for whenever I found out I was pregnant was that the Lord blessed me in a way that I could give Ranson better than I ever knew. And you're doing it. I am. You are. He is an amazing kid. That's actually why I keep checking my phone if y'all are wondering, because Kirsten said if she needed me, she was going to text me. I'm like, look, I'll be on stage, but I will leave the stage for my baby. Yes. So yeah, he's in good hands and he's not growing up like that. So, so thankful. So thankful. God is good. Would y'all just give it up for my friends, Lucas and Haley. So good. God transforms lives. He really does all of it. Every part of it, the way you grew up does not have to define the way you are living now. Like if he did it for Lucas and Haley, he can do it for you. Thank you for these people around us. You have went above and beyond to transform our families, many families, not just ours.
