Grandes tu fidelidad. Me alegra muchísimo estar aquí.
Even when I don't want to listen, even when it's hard to listen, even when I know I have the best answer and I don't need to listen, according to me, right? I want to take you to one of the most important stories in the Bible about listening to the voice of God. And it's in 1 Kings chapter 19. The prophet Elias has just come out of one of the most important moments of his career, of his ministry. It's in the pinnacle of his ministry, one of the most powerful moments of his ministry. In the previous chapter, chapter 19,
in Mount Carmel, God answered his prayer, descended fire from heaven. He saw an extraordinary spiritual victory. But something happens between chapter 18 and chapter 19 that after that success, that victory, there's something that changes everything. And it's that there's a woman named Jezebel, she threatens Elias, and Elias runs away. This man who sees fire fall from heaven runs away out of fear. This powerful prophet, we find him in the middle of a victory in the previous chapter. Here we find him tired, exhausted, depressed, emotionally exhausted, and he ends up under a tree saying goodbye. I'm tired of everything. In verse 4 of chapter 19, I'm tired of everything. Take my life. I want to die. That was his prayer. And yes, that prayer is in the Bible. Why? Because it's important.
He dirigido a tu pueblo, pero me siento solo.
No eres tú mismo, Dios. I think of times in my own life where I had to learn this. When I felt the call to the ministry, it wasn't something light. It wasn't just, oh, how nice, God called me to leave the corporate world and serve Him. Hopefully, it wasn't like that.
There was struggle, there were tears, there was discouragement, disappointment, questions, moments of prayer where I didn't have quick answers. And I remember when the charge for North Place was born in Spanish, it wasn't just a strategy. It was something I had to discern. It was something that Nair and I had to discern. It was something that we had to carry in front of God. There were questions, there were fears, there was responsibility, a feeling of responsibility. And I remember that there were moments of prayer where I would cry so much that I would fall asleep from exhaustion. I remember once in the building on 3rd Street, the questions were so deep that they burned my heart. They overwhelmed me, they exhausted me. And sometimes I would fall asleep from that exhaustion, and when I would wake up, you know what? I would still have the same question unanswered. Saying, Lord, what are you telling me? Lord, what do you want me to do? Lord, what do you want from me? And God didn't always answer the way I wanted, much less in the time that I wanted. He didn't always answer the question that I thought I was going to answer, but God always spoke. And He speaks. Many times. God didn't always give me a strategy, but you know what He always gave me? His presence. His presence. Because there are moments when you want an explanation,
but God gives us a conviction. There are moments when you want a map, Lord, give me the map, but God gives us a word. There are moments when you want to control the future, and simply what God tells us is, I am with you. Be strong. Be brave. Don't be afraid because I am with you. But that's not the answer I want. He says, my presence is with you. And that doesn't answer all the details, but it supports your soul. And maybe you are here today, thinking that God is silent, but He is not. Maybe your life is too noisy. Remember that asking opens the door, but listening opens the heart. Now I want to take a turn and revisit something I talked about briefly in the first week. Because this practice of listening is not just something we do in prayer. It's not just something we practice with God. It's not just for when we are alone with God, with His Word and the Bible. The way, I want to tell you this, the way we learn to listen to God can form the way we learn to listen to others. If I think God is not answering,
I am impatient with people. The way I learn to listen to God forms the way I learn to listen to others. Saint James 1.19 says, All of you must be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. What does that mean? Let's be quick. Let's learn to listen. He's telling us, don't try to think of the answer you're going to give, but learn to listen. Learn to be present. And that order is not accidental. The Bible doesn't say, be quick to think, correct, or defend yourself. We are quick there. Don't be quick to explain your point. It says, be quick to listen, and slow in everything else. And that is difficult. Because many of us, I think, sometimes don't listen to understand, we listen to respond. I'll leave it there for you to sit down. We are not listening to understand deeply. We listen looking for the right moment. We listen preparing our thesis, our defense. We listen comparing the story of the other with the story I have.
Thank you. It's always mine is better than yours, isn't it? We listen thinking about the good, excellent, wise advice we're going to give when the person shuts up. But that's not listening, at least not always. Sometimes what that is is waiting for our turn. We're not listening, we're waiting for our turn to speak. And I have to confess something to you, I don't always listen well, because I'm the first one to say it. I have an idea for everything. An idea, a strategy, a plan, and I formulate a problem and I have a solution. And sometimes, not always, but someone is talking to me and while they're talking to me, my mind starts to make connections of how I'm going to help you. What's the next step? What's the solution? And an idea leads me to another idea, and there's another idea, and I don't even know what you told me, and before I forget the first idea, I have to let go of it so I can grab the conversation later wherever you were, right? Sometimes, and this happens to me often, I'm practicing, I try to help, but that's not what the other person is experiencing or feeling.
So, Naira is the best wife in the world, the only one I've had, and she kindly helps me. If it's not the Holy Spirit, it's Naira, one of the two. And there was a moment where she was talking to me, sharing something, and I came in too fast and interrupted her. I'd finish the sentence, I'd finish the idea, and she'd say, I'm not done. And I'd say, but I know what you're going to say. I didn't always say it, but I thought about it. From my perspective, I'm trying to help and save her and me time. But one day, she made me see something important. She said, it's not that you're rude, it's not that you're simply interrupting me. She made me understand that when you interrupt someone, the other person really feels alone in the conversation, because there's no conversation anymore. There's a monologue where the other person isn't listening to you. And that's what she was telling me, when she doesn't let me finish the idea I'm bringing, when you interrupt with your idea, when you come in too fast, what I feel is that you're not with me in the conversation. And I think that's important, because that confronts us, or at least if you think that way.
Why? Because you can be physically there in the room, but emotionally absent. Because you can't listen and speak at the same time. You're good, I know you're good, and you're good, but you can't. Your brain can't do everything at the same time. You can look at someone and not be listening to them. You can ask questions and still not be present. Sometimes we ask questions, but it's to control the conversation, not to listen. And this is very important, to be quiet. Because one of the deepest ways to love someone is to listen to them without haste. One of the ways I've learned to listen is to listen without haste. We don't always have to fix everything. We don't always have to give advice. We don't always have to tell a similar story to the one they just told you. We don't always have to correct in the first 30 seconds. I just went through yesterday while I was working on this sermon. My wife arrived with her son, with her husband, sorry. My daughter arrived with her husband. My wife was out and about all day, but well. My daughter arrived with her husband, Claudia and David. And David is telling me something he's going to do later.
And while he was telling me, I saw where there were seven mistakes and eight more in the rest of the conversation that I hadn't finished. He didn't finish telling me what he was going to do when I was already giving him advice and ideas and precautions. I only gave him five, he had 12. I only gave him five. As soon as they left the room, God brought me back to my memory the sermon that I was also preparing for you. Not for me, it was for you. But I had to apply it yesterday afternoon. Because the reality is that I'm not talking to you from a place of perfection. I'm talking to you from a place of humility, not from a place of condemnation, not from a place of rejection. It's a place where God is giving us the opportunity not only to learn to ask questions, but to learn to listen. To listen. Listening is a form of honor. And this connects with what God is forming in us this year as a church.
Y luego me hizo preguntas fundamentales.
I want to close our conversation with John, chapter 20. It's the first day of the week. It was still dark. Mary Magdalene arrives at the tomb of Jesus. John and Peter arrive. But the tomb was empty. John and Peter are confused, they run out. Mary Magdalene stays there and begins to cry. The two angels ask her why she is crying. And she says, my master's body was stolen. If it was you, tell me where it is. And then she's talking to another person that she thinks is the gardener because he was in his pain, in his mourning. And she asked the woman, why are you crying? It was Jesus. She asked the woman, why are you crying? And she, still thinking it was the gardener, she says, my master, if it was you, tell me where it is. And I'll go get it. I'll go get it. And listen to what's happening here.
I want to invite you to the scene because Mary Magdalene is talking to Jesus, asking where Jesus is. She's looking at the answer, but she doesn't recognize it. She's talking to the risen Christ, but she thinks she's talking to the gardener. Did you hear that well? She's in front of hope, the hope of all hope, but her pain doesn't let her see hope. And I don't blame her. I'm not judging Mary Magdalene because pain makes noise. Sadness makes noise. Anxiety in us makes noise. Broken and broken expectations make noise. Assumptions make noise. Mary was looking for a corpse, not the risen Christ. And sometimes that happens to us. We are so full of pain that we don't recognize the presence of God. We are so sure of how God should respond that we don't recognize the answer when it comes to us in another way. We are so focused on what we lost that we can't see what God has already risen. Sometimes we are talking to the answer. While we keep asking, where is the answer? In fact, Jesus does something simple with Mary Magdalene, but for me it was powerful when I saw it. He doesn't give her a biblical study of the resurrection.
He doesn't give her the three important theological points. He doesn't give her an argument. Jesus says a single word. Mary. He calls her by her name. And when she hears Jesus' voice calling her by her name, that's when he recognizes her, because she recognized that voice in her pain, in her rejection, in her brokenness, in her previous life, how she lived it. When he calls her by her name, she said, Raboni, which means master. A moment before, she didn't recognize him, but when Jesus said his name, her eyes opened. Why? Because she knew him. That voice had set her free. That voice had received her. That voice had offered her dignity, had dignified her. That voice had called her to a new life, and now, in the midst of her pain, that same voice is calling her by her name. This is what happens when we listen to Jesus. From Jesus, we not only receive information. From him, we receive identity, comfort, direction, and the certainty that we are not alone, the certainty that we are not lost, because Jesus not only answers questions, Jesus calls people. And maybe, that's what someone needs to hear today.
That he calls you by your name. That he calls you by your name. Maybe you came with a lot of questions, Lord, what's going to happen to my family? What do I do with this decision? Why am I so tired and exhausted? que aquí nada cambia, señor, ¿dónde estás? Y todas esas preguntas importan. Tu nombre. Te conozco, te veo, no me he olvidado de ti.
¿Qué paso de obediencia he estado dándole larga?
¿Qué he estado postergando? Frente a ti, cara a cara.
Solo pregunta. Y la vamos a terminar. Solo escucha. Bien. Te invito a ponerte de pie. Y te invito a escucha. El viento siempre va a soplar. El ruido siempre va a estar presente. El terremoto siempre va a sacudir. Y el fuego siempre va a impresionar. Pero el susurro requiere espacio. Mientras Pastor Oscar viene, quiero orar por ti. E invitarte. Quiero aprender a escuchar tu voz, oh Dios. Enséñame a escuchar.
