A word from Jesus. Well, I want you to go ahead and get started and it's good to see y'all back, especially after what I preached last Sunday. I'm glad you're back.
When you're preaching, hey, eat my flesh, drink my blood. Okay, that's one of those that'll just, you know. But we realized something last week, didn't we? Jesus will not allow you to sample him. This is not Costco for Christians. You are not being sampled, Jesus. You are totally sustaining my life. And without it, I die, I perish, amen. So we're getting ready to head into another message in this shaking my head. Y'all know when you get the emoji, I can't believe, I just can't believe this. And I cannot believe Jesus would ask this. And so I want you to go to Mark chapter 10 and verse 17, and we're gonna start there. And I just want you to hang out with me a little bit in this true story that happened while Jesus was on this earth. And his ministry encountered a great young man. This is the kind of young man you hoped any girl in our church would marry. You'd want to be your son-in-law. But there's something deeper Jesus is looking at here. So here's the story, Mark chapter 10, verse 17. Let's start there. It says, as Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down and asked, good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Why do you call me good, Jesus asked. Only God is truly good.
But to answer your question, you know the commandments. You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. The guy's listening to this, he's going, check, check, check, check, check, check. Honor your father and mother. Teacher, the man replied. I've obeyed all these commandments since I was young. Wow, looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. The guy thinks, I'm in. Wait a minute, there's still one thing you haven't done, he told him. Go and sell your gaming device and your bass boat. Go sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. Wow. Yeah, bummer, huh? At this, the man's face fell and he went away. I want you to underline that word, sad. That's a critical word there. We're gonna circle back around what all that means. There's a lot packed in that word, sad. For he had many possessions. So here's my word for you today
and the title of my message, sell everything. But I just got it yesterday. Hope you enjoyed it. So the reason why you gotta land on this shaking my head statement that Jesus said is because you find it recorded in all three gospels. So that means out of the four gospels, three of them went, you got to be kidding me. They said who who can get saved? This is the dude you want in your church Who's gonna get saved out of this? So the thing is what you do the first thing everybody focuses on and everybody loves to leverage this message for this one thing Is forgiving and it is talking about being generous and giving it does it does involve that But your problem is you're focusing on the money So That's the first thing you do is you immediately start focusing on the money and here's what happens when you look at these statements Of jesus many times you start focusing on one thing But you are missing the main thing So what you get hung up is that's right. That's right Rich people are bad Poor people are good. We'll talk about that in a minute But you've got to understand jesus was not primarily after his money Jesus christ is after the thing Competing with his surrender to the lordship of jesus christ and i'll show you that in just a moment He really didn't believe he was lord He's after this thing and so what jesus does here's what happens I'm gonna give you the whole thing what jesus will do to you and even your pastor Is he identifies? anything Don't make it just about money. He will identify
anything That you trust more than him And he won't just identify it but then here's what he does Jesus will confront anything That we trust more than him He will confront it he will poke it in the eye And watch you flinch to prove if you're trusting it more than him That's the point here So it's really just it's really neat here to see this guy because you say yeah, but look he's this guy is so genuine man Pastor sam this guy is genuine. He is a genuine seeker Let's examine the seeker just for a moment because we are right now in in america I don't know what god seems to be doing. But uh For all the younger generation there is this draw to check jesus out There's this draw to check him out. They're coming to churches Some of you are watch on some of you're here You might be here just checking it out because there's something going on inside your spirit. You're checking him out But jesus just can't be checked out This is not costco again where you sample him and you move on This is a selling out of surrender and he will poke in the eye anything that youth Have trusted more than him and leaning into more than him. This is really interesting I love this story because the guy didn't lack sincerity. There are sincere seekers. I love sincere seekers Jesus had love because this guy was a genuine He was a genuine sincere seeker and here's how you know, the guy comes running to jesus and then drops to his knees This is a pastor's dream I don't have to preach I'm, just standing there hadn't even preached the message offering hadn't been taken and people are just running Pastor sam, how do I get saved? This is a pastor's dream And this guy comes running and he comes kneeling now for you to see this and skip by You're missing something because this is profound. It is huge in this culture
First of all, you need to understand that people in the culture today when you were a ruler or you had position and that's why They label him as the rich young ruler People of that kind of status and position did not run in public They didn't run And here's another thing. They definitely did not do wealthy men of stature during that time did not Publicly kneel in front of everyone Now look at this cat He runs into this crowd where jesus is now check out the crowd that's around jesus Jesus attracted affluent people. We know that he attracted wealthy people, but predominantly it was the poor people that followed jesus christ And it was people that were um were sick in body and needed a miracle You remember they come because of his miracles and then another reason they came is there were a lot of sinners gathered around him So I will tell you that this guy who religiously has it all together has position and has money Is not going to run into a group of heathens and humiliate himself and drop to his knees and run which is against that culture This guy was a sincere guy Pretty amazing, isn't it? And the guy and the crowd's looking at him and he's dropping so, you know, he's sincere He's a seeker, but there's another thing this guy had success now outwardly It looked like success. So let's check him out for a moment. He's rich. He's young. He's a ruler man He would be an influencer On your on your reels. I promise you He's got wealth Watch this, he's got morality, right? He's got influence, he's a leader. People will say, man, how did you get to the top? Tell me your ways, how did you get it? Get your book out, I wanna know how you made it. The guy has religion, he's got it all. I'm telling you, this is the dude you'd want your daughter to marry.
And he comes running to Jesus. But there's something missing, that's why he's running and humiliating himself because he's got it, but something is still missing. Now here's the shocking part. The shocking part is that he did not come running to Jesus. That's not the shocking part, here's the shocking part. The shocking part was he was empty. That's what shocks me because that shocks you. Because you said, man, if I just had that money, if I just had that car, if I'd have married that kind of a person instead of marrying what I've got, if I'd have just had that, but he has it all, everybody. It's not shocking he comes to Jesus because Jesus was pretty popular. It's shocking that he came empty. And the point is this, Jesus is showing you can have success and you can even be a good religious person and do all those great things. On the outside, everybody thinks you're doing great, but still be starving inside of your spirit. And that's what's driving this man. That's what's happening in our culture. So don't buy into it because we live by post, we live by reels, and doesn't it just bug you when you look at their posts and they're in the Bahamas in February? Doesn't it, and then you look at, and then you see all their families smiling and you gotta deal with all the dysfunction
of your marriage and your kids and they're all smiling and happy. I mean, they're all fit and they're just doing good and you just walk by the mirror in the morning and ask God for a divine healing. You just compare yourself and this is what happens to us. A lot of the folks that you see posting your reels and you are admiring, a lot of them are falling apart on the inside and there's something missing. That's why there's this move to come and seek and check Jesus out right now in America is because we have money, they have status, they've had sex, they've had everything they've wanted, they've got married, it's still not happy, they got in a different neighborhood, they got the better car, they got the better job, they got healed from their sickness, they made it through, but something is still missing. The shock is not that you're coming to Jesus, the shock is that they are still empty and so they're trying to feed the starvation inside of their spiritual emptiness, so what do they do? They say, here's what I gotta do, I'll go find a new therapy, I'll go find a new therapist. How do I deal with the emptiness? I get the hustle culture, the hustle culture. I'm gonna have that hustle, I just gotta keep, I'm gonna go to the top, gotta go to the top, gotta keep pressing, gotta keep going. They go from relationship to relationship,
they hit fitness, fitness, I gotta work out, gotta work out, gotta work out, I gotta get another influencer. Now I know what I need, I need a success podcast. Have you heard this podcast? I need another relationship, I need a self-help book. Those are all nice, wonderful things in your life, but why, like the rich young ruler, are you still lying awake at night and still saying, why am I still so empty and why do I feel like something is missing? You're a genuine seeker. The problem is, is he had everything except eternal life and eternal peace and peace is not a feeling which people are trying to aspire. Peace is the person and the person is Jesus Christ, the son of the living God and that's what they don't have. So he wanted success, listen, he had success. Come on, he was sincere, but there's one thing Jesus said you need. You lack surrender and Jesus looks, he goes past your post, he goes past your reels and he says, you look great and I even saw you lift your hands this morning, but he said, I'm gonna give you a spiritual MRI and show you what's really wrong. Listen, I'm gonna go into the stuff you're not going into that you're trusting more than me. That's why even God said to Samuel in 1 Samuel 16, 17, he says, man looks at the outward appearance,
but the Lord gives you an MRI. He goes into what nobody can see because he's exposing something. Now, let me show you what he exposed. Seeker, but not surrendered. I wanna show you this. Did you notice that when he comes up to Jesus, he runs up to him and says, good teacher, good teacher. And what does Jesus say to him? Jesus looks at him, he says, why do you call me good? And then Jesus says this, only the holy God, Yahweh, Jehovah, he is the only one that is good. Why do you say that? Well, here's what Jesus is not doing. So somebody say, was he saying he's not God? Is that what he's saying? Jesus was not rejecting his holiness, sinless life. He was not rejecting his divinity. What he was doing was he was challenging this rich young ruler with his definition of goodness. That's what he's doing. So what Jesus is doing, the guy comes up and says, good teacher. And then later he calls him just teacher. And Jesus sits there and says, only God himself is good. So what is Jesus Christ doing to him and he's doing to everybody else? Jesus forced this rich young ruler to decide, am I just a good teacher
or am I God standing in front of you? Make up your mind. He's challenging him. He said, only God is good. So if only God is good, am I just your inspiration for your screenshot that you put up front? Am I just your prophet? Am I just your advisor when your boyfriend breaks up with you? What am I to you? What am I? Am I just your life coach that Jesus says good things just like Buddha, just like Confucius or am I Jehovah God, the Holy one, the only one that you must make a choice to surrender to? That's what Jesus is doing. He's backing the seeker into the corner saying, you gotta make up your mind. I am not just motivational quotes and scriptures that give you peace and calm. I am the one and only true God. I'm not advisor. I'm not life coach. I'm not prophet. I am Jesus Christ, the son of the living God, the Holy one that is the answer you are looking for. That's what he's doing. So what is Jesus doing again? Jesus not only exposes anything
that you trust more than him, Jesus confronts anything you trust more than him. That's what he's doing. Why does Jesus do this? Because he said, this is a snare. It'll destroy your life. It's good, but it will not give you eternal life. It will destroy you. There's only one thing that gives you life. So let's read on here for a second. Let's go to Mark chapter 10, verse 23. This is the snare. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, excuse me, he says, how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. This amazed them, but there's a reason why it amazed them. What? But Jesus said again, dear children, it is very hard to enter the kingdom of God. In fact, it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. Again, when you focus on one thing, you are missing the main thing of what he's trying to say. Jesus was not teaching you get salvation through poverty. That's works. That means just don't show up to work. Just don't work. You'll get in. Be poor.
This is not what Jesus is teaching because then when you start getting that angle, here's what you start thinking. Rich people bad, poor people are always good. But here's what I've discovered and it didn't take the Bible for me to figure it out. I have met some rich, mean, cranky, stingy, wealthy people. But then I met some poor, angry, mean, stingy, poor people too. Then I met some rich, joyful, Jesus loving, generous, rich people. And I've met some poor, Jesus following, joyful, generous, poor people that were equally as generous as somebody that had all the money in the world. So I know something's not right. This is not about Jesus saying money's bad, getting wealthy. I know because I know it's not because then why would he let Abraham be one of the wealthiest men in the word of God? I mean, why would he let Job be one of the wealthiest guy in the word of God if he was against riches and people making money and entrepreneurship? I mean, Joseph of Arimathea. Why would Jesus allow him to be a part of the story of his burial? Why would he do that? Why would he let Lydia, a rich businesswoman in the New Testament?
I mean, extremely. Wealthy woman, why would he give her that wealth because there were people that had status power and high places of government had a lot of money What is Jesus doing here if it's not? Just money What Jesus is doing? Jesus was exposing the idol in this man's heart that he didn't want to admit. I trust more than you So what happened is is money money revealed money revealed what actually ruled the guy So Jesus ends up triggering one thing that the cat could not surrender to God and whatever You cannot surrender Here's what Jesus is saying What you cannot surrender and have the ability to walk away from is Truly your Savior and I am NOT Because the guy took him from good teacher Down just to teacher because Jesus was starting to step in He couldn't call him the Lord the Holy God That's what he's challenging. Isn't that amazing? So Jesus is challenging. So whatever you can't surrender it becomes your Savior So here's what begins to happen that one thing that you can't surrender becomes your source of identity It becomes who you are. It becomes your sense of security. I've got it all together. I've built barns. I've built business I got it all I got I got money. I put away I've saved my money. I've got it all together I can heck I can take this on I've done it myself You get your own sense of righteousness. God should let me in. I have I have obeyed the law I honor my mother and father I should get in I should get in so Jesus hits the religious thing that he's starting to make An idol I should get in you have your own sense of self-righteousness You start having your own sense of peace. Yes. I have everything together My marriage is happy. My kids are all getting days One was gonna be one of them's gonna one it's gonna be a doctor Once one's once one's gonna one's gonna change the world Everything is right with the world and you have a sense of your own. Peace your own accomplishment. He said that has become your Savior and These idols will not save you or give you eternal life That's why you're not sleeping rich young ruler because you've tried it and that's why you're coming to me and you got to make a decision
Am I just a good teacher or am I truly God that takes away the sins of the world So Jesus goes presses a little further. I mean he really gets into it verse 25. You'll love this. In fact, he said It's easier for a camel To go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God Now when you hear this people say yeah, but that was and you heard some people teach this Well, that really was where In those ancient times at night when the gates were closed Travelers would come in and there was a place called the eye The eye of the needle in the wall of the city and it was real small and in order to get through it they had to take the camels and strip everything down and the camel had to crawl through on its knees and and And also the traveler had to go through and this was a security so they knew that everything was stripped off everything was examined So it it was hard, but it wasn't impossible again. They say that's but I want to tell you that is that is a myth That is not what he meant. Here's what Jesus meant He says This is a needle Okay, I got the biggest needle we could find Okay, this which camera am I going to Is it oh You people are so difficult This Okay, pretend it's a needle, okay This makes the point even more powerful That's the eye of the needle you can't even hardly see it Jesus is not talking mythically He says this is a needle and we need a camel Okay, this is all I could do remember we're a non-profit ministry And Have you smelled the one we have for Christmas, okay, it's a little rugged, okay Jesus is saying that's a needle. That's the eye needle. This is a camel. He's not speaking
This just It's just an allegory just an object lesson. He's saying This is not going to happen That's what he means straightforward This camel not getting in and he's saying all the other Saviors Even you have kept the rules. You've loved your parents. You've not cheated. You've not committed adultery You've made everything right and you think even you're even what you did for the poor you think that Gets you in it does not get you in That's his point What he's saying is anything Besides me Cannot and will not allow you in I Don't care how much you go to church. I don't care how much money you gave I don't care how many religious acts you go to I don't care how many prayers you pray There's only one thing that can get you in and that is your complete total surrender to the one who is God Almighty with skin on who died on the cross for your Salvation and he gives you this gift free. That is only thing gets you in and Jesus I will confront your looks if your looks you think is what gives you your identity if you think your beauty is what gives Your identity if you think your husband your wife is finally gives you your identity your church finally gives your identity You finally got the pay raise you finally made your first million He said if that is your sense of peace, that is your source of all your identity He said I am telling you it will fail you and it will not get you in So here's what Jesus does he pokes in the eye the things that we start making Our Savior our identity our sense of security our sense of peace So he'll even poke your marriage in the eye to find out. Is that what truly gives your identity? He will poke your money in the eye. He will poke your health in the eye
He will poke your status your position in your education He will poke it in the eye to find that did you make that more than me? and He'll do it to your pastor. So I promise you he'll do it to you Why? Because Jesus Christ Confronts anything he doesn't care if you're making it about the money you're missing the point He will make it he will confront anything we trust more than him and this is why he says I'm not just a teacher Don't put me in the ranks with Buddha Confucius Muhammad. I am the Holy Son of God You need to make a decision young ruler You've taken me from good teacher down to teacher because you will not declare You are the son of the Living God and I must make a decision now and he did make a decision But Jesus says I poke those snares in the eye because they are a trap They may be great things to have but they are a trap That shows you can have your security and your eternal peace and your sense of identity and you can do without me You can even do with religious works. So that's why Jesus says in John 14 6. He says I am The way I am the truth I am the life and no one comes to the Father God But through me the sinless Son of God that is his point Are y'all y'all is this making sense here? He said that the reality is this I'm the only one I Am the Savior of your soul and your children's response to you is not your Savior So it cannot be your identity Your money and the loss of the job cannot be ready The spouse that walked out of you cannot be your identity your past failures cannot be your identity I must be your identity your peace your security. I Am it? Totally these other things I just let him I just let you have him cuz I like you So Jesus says this in verse 26, let's go on we're gonna break we're coming in for a landing, okay The disciples were astounded like the rest of us that means they were going shaking my head Then who in the world don't you love this then who in the world can be saved they're going this
Here's what this is code language for them saying this dude's better doing better than we are He's kept his rules better than we have Who in the, if this, this guy came running, he's home, he's running, we haven't come running on bend and knee. This guy did it all, then who in the world can be saved, they asked. Jesus looked at them intently and said, humanly speaking, it is impossible, but with God, everything is possible with God, everything. Maybe some of you are asking that question. Maybe you're having that uneasiness inside of you. Something's missing. I got this pastor. I got this. I got this. I got this. What's something. Maybe some of you accepted Jesus, but there are other things that are making, he will, he will expose it, reveal it, and then he will confront it because he knows it will not ultimately save you and give you the peace you need. What we cannot do is what he's saying. What we cannot do. His grace has already done is what he's saying. That's why Paul says in Ephesians two, eight, he says, for it is by what everybody say, say that word. It's a good, it is for it is by what his grace. You have been saved through faith. You're simple saying, Jesus, you are the son of living God. There's another life outside of you. You are it by faith, and this is not from yourselves. It's a gift from God. You couldn't produce a bit of it.
So when Jesus confronts the guy, these guys are going, who can Jesus goes a step further. Watch it. Watch what he does. It says that the rich young world. You remember when I said at the beginning, he went away sad, how many remember that point? He went away sad, sorrowful. And the reason he did was because he could not lose what had become his savior and truly his God. Cause she's saying, who's God, your looks, your position, your kids, your family, your marriage, your business, your church. Who's God? Who is God? Who's God? And this guy said, I can't lose this. I can't lose. And then he turns away and he goes away sad. The word sad there is grieved. And you can go, if you do just go do a Greek word study on it. It's distressed. He's in such distress. He's in absolute agony. This kid, that Greek word, can I tell you another place that that word appears and show where it appears? There's a second place. It appears, it's going to shock you. It's in Matthew 26 and it was in the garden of Gethsemane before Jesus knew he was going to be brutally crucified by the hands of men. And he knew that the pain would be unbelievable, insurmountable. He knew it, but there was something else that was deeper than the pain of people spitting his face, mocking him.
It says that Jesus begin to go into anguish. He became sorrowful. It went anguish. That is the same word that was used when this man wouldn't let go of what was his God, anguish, deep sorrow, anguish, same word. But why was Jesus in such sorrow, in such distress? The Bible said it started affecting his physical body to the point that he was in such stress that his capillaries, blood started mixing with his sweat that it fell to the ground. That's how deep a stress he was in. That's the level of stress. What was stressing him out? Here's what was stressing out Jesus. For the first time in his life, he is going to be separated from ultimate joy, the ultimate meaning of life. And that was the father God. He had never been separated from the father God ever. That's why he says, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? He has never known separation from holiness, purity, the ultimate joy, the ultimate identity, the ultimate meaning of life. And for the first time, he is going to be separated and he's never experienced it. And the reason he's going to be separated was because he took your sin. He took all that stuff that you stay awake at night over. He took all that sin of the world and your pastor, and he said, I'm going to take it. And if I'm taking Sam Reifel's sin and your sin, sir, your sin, ma'am, your sin, young lady, can I tell you, it means he cannot be in the presence of a holy God. And for the first time, he says, I'm going to be separated from the very. Source of life the meaning of life my identity my security my joy for the first time I've never experienced and i'm going to lose that because i'm taking it for humanity and their sin And jesus went in such anguish because he was going to lose that
And this young man Puts his money At the level of the suffering that jesus took for your sin same god So you can have it all together on the outside You can even come to church thanks Do a lot of good things I can tell you a lot of funerals have that theology. He was a good man Everybody loved her But he says who is god that you will surrender to and jesus will confront anything Anything you or I trust in more than him because he says sam Your success will never give you life eternal Something is missing So here's what i've discovered. Here's what I keep learning because things try to come on How many are with me things try to encroach in our life to become the center? But when jesus is constantly shoved into the center and the hub which everything else must revolve around It becomes that center in that core. Guess what happens? When he becomes center Guess what happens to your money I'll tell you what happens to it money just Becomes money That's all it is. It's your money You don't resent when other people have it Grateful to god when you get it But money is just money and it doesn't give you any sense of peace or security or identity It's just money and so it becomes a tool in the hand of god through the one who now holds it Your looks Oh, no, oh no. Oh no is it it's a zit Oh, they're gonna make one zit is just a zit And
Age just becomes age When jesus is at the center then your position just comes your position Are you getting this I'm trying to keep myself from wigging out every time I see the news But when jesus becomes the center doesn't mean you're oblivious to it It just means you handle all these things differently you handle your marriage differently You handle your money you handle your business you handle your company you handle your failures totally different You hold you handle your past sins totally differently when jesus christ said everything changes But when they become the savior when they fall apart you fall apart But when jesus is the center when it falls apart, you don't fall apart You just know how to navigate it. So It's not this you want the good news. You want the bad news want the bad news first the good news first It's not good news or bad news. Guess what? It's just news It's just news and jesus showed me how to handle the news when no matter what comes my way How are you seeing this? I close with this seriously i'm closing. I'm not lying to you. I'm closing So you see you see this story as the rich young ruler So we focus in on the one rich ruler, but really this is the story of two rich young rulers The one had earthly money position did everything right religiously. I mean anybody in his church would just love this guy But he wasn't surrendered And jesus confronts it He exposes it And he says I gotta be lord Then you can make it just money. You can make it just looks position. Just make it the health issue It's just the health issue. He's the center. He'll guide me. He'll show me he'll lead me They walked away from me. God will show me how to lead rejected. Oh, she'll show me how to overcome Even bitterness. We said bittersome will rule me because these people are not my lord God will show me how am I supposed to treat this? How am I supposed to manage this? Where do I take my feelings and my emotions? How do I process them? It just becomes that
And this rich young ruler said I can't walk away he had riches But he said I can't go to I can't go to the one who I believe truly is god So I can't go to the cross and give it up And the second rich young ruler was jesus he had heaven's riches he had everything everybody All he could think about was you I said you sir you ma'am. I think he's think about you And he said I'm willing to walk away from heaven's riches To take that preacher sin that's up there preaching and everybody in this room and all of humanity if they'll believe in me And I'll walk away from the riches to go to the cross So they can have eternal life through my sinless shed blood But Today in this room and those of you watching online Today there are three rich young rulers It's this man It's Jesus Christ and now He's talking to you and what he's been poking in the eye That's surfacing But he says get me back to center and I'll show you how to handle all these other things Because outside of me you do not have eternal life You cannot enter the kingdom of heaven and you will never know true joy in this life or the life to come How many thank God he is our riches. He is our wealth
