Seven Landmines That Will Destroy Your Home
A young man named Chris Moon joined a humanitarian group clearing landmines in Mozambique. He was trained to walk slowly, listen carefully, and never step where he hadn’t scanned. But one day, he took a shortcut, just a few feet off the marked path. The resulting explosion nearly cost him his life. He later said, “I let familiarity numb my focus. I forgot that just because I didn’t see the danger didn’t mean it wasn’t there.”
That same warning applies to our homes today. Just because we cannot see the spiritual landmines the enemy has planted does not mean they are not there. Subtle compromises, relational traps, and spiritual shortcuts lie just beneath the surface. By the time we realize the danger, the damage has often been done. But what if you could see the threat before it shattered your home? Jesus didn’t leave us blind. He gave us His truth so we could walk in wisdom. As the Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 5, “Pay careful attention, then, to how you live—not as unwise people but as wise.” Let’s expose seven landmines the devil uses so we can build our homes on the solid rock of God’s truth.
This episode of All In with Pastor Jordan Easley has been made possible by the generous support of viewers like you. Welcome to All In with Pastor Jordan Easley. Today's message is about to begin, and we invite you to prepare your heart and mind to hear an inspiring message from God's Word. We hope and pray for God to speak to you today as you seek to live your life all in for Jesus Christ. And now from First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, here's Pastor Jordan Easley. Well, I'm glad you're here today. We are in week two of the series that we're calling Home Builders. And if you have a copy of God's Word, we're gonna dive into this message from Ephesians chapter five, Ephesians chapter five. You know, the very first time I visited the Holy Land, I went to the traditional site of Jesus's baptism. I don't know if you've ever been there before, but it is not what I had expected. I thought when I show up at this location, it's gonna be beautiful, and it's gonna be like this majestic body of water that's flowing this clear stream of water. Doves are gonna be flying all over the place. Like, it's gonna be awesome. But man, when I showed up at this place for the very first time, the place where Jesus was baptized,
this is what I saw. I saw a muddy creek. It looks like you could be in Tennessee, right? I mean, it's just a muddy creek. And I was a little disappointed, but I still understood the significance of this spot. But then I noticed something else that I wasn't prepared to know. And that was, this wasn't just a creek. It was also the dividing line between Israel and Jordan. Did you guys know that? On both sides of the river that day, I'm sitting there watching people be baptized, but on both sides, there are soldiers standing on the Israel side and on the Jordan side, and they're standing there at attention with machine guns, fully alert, guarding their land. I mean, these soldiers were absolutely locked in until me and my brother asked if we could take a picture with them. And then we were like, hey, let's take a picture. And then they got back on guard. And then they started to protect Israel. These are the Israeli soldiers who were protecting that day. But as we were leaving that site that day, many years ago, I noticed something as we were pulling off the property. There was a fenced in section of land,
a big field right on the border there between Israel and Jordan. And there was a small sign on a fence that caught my guard. In fact, I was like, stop the van. And I got out and I took a picture of it because it says danger, landmines. There are landmines all over this field. And I was like, that is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life, a danger mines sign. So you better believe I wanted the photo opportunity, but I jumped out of the van that day and I grabbed a couple of my buddies and I said, we're not just gonna take a photo. We're gonna have a little fun. So in that moment, my friends and I, we're picking up rocks like teenage boys and we're throwing rocks into this field just hoping that something happens, right? Like maybe one of those rocks are gonna hit a landmine. Maybe we're gonna see an explosion and it didn't happen, all right? But it would have been pretty cool in that moment. It's actually a good thing it didn't because there would have been an international incident and I probably wouldn't be here today. But otherwise, listen, there's a guy that day that was with us and he was watching us act like fools and he pulled us aside and he said, boys, I want you to relax because those mines in the field,
they were disarmed years ago. The sign is just a precaution in case they missed one, all right, but this was a minefield that was to protect the land of Israel. And we laughed it off and it was hilarious and we had a good time, but it later hit me. The only reason that we could laugh that day, the only reason we could play around that day was because those mines were no longer active. I mean, think about if you're walking through a field and there were active mines. I mean, think about that. Just one wrong step or one rock that hits the wrong place and that could mean disaster. And as I was preparing for this message this week, that's the story that came to my mind. But I thought in the same way, there are a lot of families that are walking that path today. A lot of families who are navigating these landmine fields and they are in danger and they may not even realize it, but there are hidden mines in their homes. There are spiritual landmines, dangerous and destructive traps that are set by the enemy and the enemy more than anybody else wants those mines to go off. And unlike the field in Israel, those mines are very much armed. You step on one of those, it has the potential to destroy your marriage.
You step on one, it can wound a child. You step on one, it could tear apart your home. And that's why this message. It's just called seven landmines that will destroy your home. We're going to look at all seven of those landmines today, and we're going to see firsthand where those traps are. We're going to see how to recognize those landmines. And most importantly, we're going to see how we can avoid them before it's too late. I think we would all agree today that if you know that there's a landmine in your path, you're going to walk differently. Shake your head if you're agreeing with that statement, right? If I told you there is a landmine between you and your destination, you're going to walk and you're going to pay attention in a way where perhaps you wouldn't just in a normal day. And you know, Paul talks about that in Ephesians five. He says this very clearly in Ephesians five, verse 15. He said, pay careful attention then to how you walk, not as unwise people, but as wise making the most of the time because the days are evil. So Paul in this passage, he's saying, pay attention to your feet, pay attention to the path and walk carefully. Walk with wisdom and don't hit the landmines that the devil's putting in your path. Today in this message, I want to expose seven landmines, seven spiritual threats that the devil uses to destroy homes. And let me just tell you, these are not hypotheticals. These are real landmines that I see every single day as a pastor, as a friend, as a fellow home builder. And I see these landmines blowing up marriages and dividing children from their parents and distorting the truth and distracting people from what matters most. So today I want to encourage you, even if you're not a note taker, I'm going to encourage you to write these things down and to decide that you're going to pray over these things
and you're going to begin walking with wisdom around the landmines in your path. So here, here's how we're going to do this today. Are you ready for the first one? You're going to talk back to me today. All right. The first one is this. It's the word distraction. Say that word with me. Distraction. Say it a little bit louder distraction. That's the first landmine today. And in my opinion, this is one of the most common, but also one of the most underestimated landmines impacting our homes in a real way today. So let me just ask you, as we launch into this thing today, is distraction a reality in your family? Yes or no? Yes. I think most of us, if we're being honest, would have to say yes. A few weeks ago, our family flew across the country to spend time with some of our extended family. And this happened after we got up at 4 a.m. here in Cleveland. We drove over an hour to the Knoxville airport. We boarded a plane. We flew across the country. We landed. We got our bags. Then we got in a vehicle. We drove another hour or so, all of this just to be with family. You're tracking? Just to be with them.
And then when we finally made it, we found ourselves sitting around a big, big table for lunch with all of these people, people that we love, people that we had sacrificed greatly to be with that day. But before the food was even delivered to the table, I looked up and every single one of us around the table were doing this. Myself included. I'm telling on myself right now, all right? I was doing it as well, but I just noticed that. We weren't talking to each other. We weren't laughing with one another. We weren't asking questions. We weren't catching up. Now we did those things throughout the trip. We had those moments with our family, but in that moment, every single one of us were distracted. Hey, being honest today, how many, how many of us would say that happens far too often in our homes? That happens far too, far too often in our families. Distraction like that seems to be very innocent at first. A few emails at dinner or scrolling reels over and over again or reading the most recent post or watching other people live their lives on TikTok, right? And many of us spend way too much of our time distracted and we seem to be okay with it. We seem to be okay with another weekend away from church or a new hobby that eats up our evenings or mindless scrolling for hours and hours every single day. Distractions don't really feel like a landmine that can blow up your home, but really they are because the distractions in your life quietly pull your eyes off of the main things in life. You get that? A distraction, it pulls your mind away from the main things and it reroutes your focus, it reroutes your energy, it reroutes your attention to everything else.
Here's what I've learned over the years. Satan doesn't need to destroy you if he can just distract you. And what I mean by that is this, if you're distracted by the things of this world, your mind doesn't have the margin to think about the things of God. And that's why distraction is so destructive. It's not that your phone is bad. Listen, your phone isn't the devil, but may I tell you something? Your phone also isn't God. And yet do a little comparison, compare how much time you spend on your phone versus how much time you're actually spending with him. Someone told me a long time ago, if the devil can't make you bad, he'll make you busy. Why is that? Well, it's because busy people, distracted people stay focused on things that ultimately do not matter. So ask yourself that question, my time, my attention, my focus, am I focusing on things that will matter in a hundred years? Very easy question to ask, very difficult question to answer. Think about this, moms and dads, when was the last time your family just sat around and prayed together? More than just 30 seconds here or 30 seconds there, but you're saying we're gonna pray for real things. When's the last time we opened up the Bible
and just read God's word as a household and discuss what God's word is saying? When's the last time we shared a meal without screens, without distractions, without anything other than just people and food and conversation and engagement? See, we've been sold this lie that more is better and that packed calendars equal successful homes, but then you flip the page and you read in Psalm 46.10 and God says this, he said, be still and know that I am God. Your phone isn't God, your distraction isn't God, I am God, which means if I'm never still, I'm never really gonna know him the way that I'm supposed to know him. That doesn't mean you should never have a phone in your hand, but it does mean that your priority ought to be a little different most of the time. Hey, get this today, what distracts you will eventually direct you. I don't care what your distraction is, it could be a phone, it could be a job, it could be a hobby, it could be a group of friends that's pulling you away from your family, but whatever that thing is, whatever it is that distracts you will ultimately direct you. And if the devil can distract your eyes, he can detour your life. That's why this is number one. It's the number one landmine that we're gonna see today and that is distraction.
Are you ready for number two? Are you ready for number two? Yes, all right, number two is division. Say that word with me, division. Say it one more time, division. The devil's goal for your life and for your family is for you to live divided. I don't know if you realize that or not, but he has goals for your family just like God does. And his goal is for you to have division in your home. Let me show you why. Jesus says this in Mark 3, 25. He said, a house divided against itself cannot stand. A house divided against itself cannot stand. And yet so many homes today are fractured. I mean, you look at homes today, you have parents who are fighting, you have kids who are tuning out, doing their own thing. You've got siblings who are battling, they're at war. And you have spouses who now live like roommates. And you ask the question, if that is the reality, what happened? Well, the cause of division isn't always obvious. Most of the time division starts with something small. It starts with hurt feelings or unspoken tension or comparison or selfish motives. And over time, the enemy uses those small things to do what? To dig a trench that goes right through your living room. We've experienced that.
Some of us have experienced that firsthand. Listen, I recently heard about a Christian couple who had a disagreement one night. Nothing big, nothing major, nothing catastrophic, just a sharp exchange between husband and wife. But neither one of them apologized. Well, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. They stopped praying together. They stopped laughing together. They stopped communicating, stopped connecting. And eventually they ended up in counseling. And both of them were saying, I don't even know how we got here. I don't even know what brought us here. But that's how division works. You don't wake up one morning and decide, we're gonna hate each other today. I mean, that's not how it works in most relationships. You just stop fighting for each other. And when that happens, eventually you start fighting against one another. Listen, in Ephesians chapter four, Paul's gonna speak to that. He says in verse 26, don't let the sun go down on your anger and do not give the devil a foothold. Now that word foothold in the Greek is also the word opportunity in English. So he's saying this, he's saying don't let division linger in your home.
Don't let that conflict reside in your relationship. Because when you do, here's what the Bible says. You're giving the devil an opportunity. opportunity to gain ground in your family. You're giving him permission to take up residence in your relationship. So when I read that this week, I just jotted this down in my notes. I just wrote down what you don't resolve, the enemy will use to dissolve. I just wanna share that with you today, because it's true. Listen, what you don't take responsibility in resolving, you're telling the devil, hey, I'm giving you permission to start dissolving all the good things that God wants in my family. And he wants to dissolve everything that's good in your home. So when there's conflict, get this today, silence is a megaphone. All the silent treatment people in the room, get this, it's a megaphone. It's the devil's megaphone. And bitterness will become a blueprint for destruction. So deal with it, because division is a landmine that the devil loves. He loves to divide homes because a divided home cannot stand up. It cannot stand up. That's number two.
You ready for number three? Number three is distortion. Distortion, get this today. Hey, the Bible is very clear in defining truth. Can we all agree with that? This word, the word of God is truth, amen. This is the truth of God's word. There's nothing untrue in this word. It is God's truth. He's defined it very clearly. But many times we distort that truth in order to accommodate our lifestyle. Now you don't have to deny the truth to be destroyed by the devil. All you have to do is distort it just a little bit. And really that seems to be one of the devil's favorite things to do these days. He's not coming out and just telling outright lies. No, he's just twisting lies. He's tweaking the truth to become something completely different. That's what he loves to do. That's what he did in the Garden of Eden, back with Eve. Remember that conversation? That's what led Eve in chapter three, verse one, to ask this question. She said, did God really say? It's because God had truth over here, but the devil's whispering lies in this ear and it caused confusion in her heart.
He distorted the truth back then, but the devil keeps distorting truth even today. Distortion's been a key part of the devil's strategy for a long time. He doesn't just deny God's truth, he's just twisting it. He's blurring the lines just a little bit so that God's original design no longer makes any sense. Listen, when you pay attention to the world that we're living in, it's easy to see how the devil's working hard to distort God's design in a lot of areas. I mean, have you guys seen this? Am I the only one that's seen the devil try to distort God's design for the family? Have you noticed that? God's design for leadership or love or gender or sexuality or marriage? The Bible is packed with truth, and yet the devil's packaging sin and glitter and he's trying to make sin seem a little more glamorous. He's convincing people that God's word is outdated and it's judgmental, it's even optional. So that tells me if I'm not rooted in God's word, if I'm not rooted in the scripture, then I'm gonna fall for the distortion of the devil. Hey, that's why Romans 12, verse two tells us, do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed, how? By the renewing of your mind. So if you're not renewing your mind in God's truth,
the world will reshape your mind in lies. Man, that is destructive. It's a landmine where, man, you hit that landmine and it's hard to recover. You ready for the fourth one? All right, the fourth landmine today is deception. It's deception. As you can see, I went with a D theme, all right? So you can start guessing the next one. But this one is a big one and it's called deception. I think this is a dangerous condition that is infecting the hearts, the minds, the homes and the churches of today. I'm not talking about addiction. I'm not talking about immorality. I'm talking about something even more dangerous and possibly even more deadly. It's called self-deception. When I think about this landmine, I think about a person who struggles in the area of alcohol just using this as an example, not a specific story, just an example. But we've all had that person, all had that friend who just struggles with alcohol. They started with social drinking and they drink a little bit with buddies but then it starts to develop and they start drinking a little bit more. And then at some point in the story, that alcohol is affecting how they work
and how they engage with people. It's negatively impacting relationships. It might even be hurting their health. And then you have a person that encounters that person and says, man, I'm concerned about you or I'm worried about you. And how do they respond? They respond saying, it's not a big deal. I can stop this whenever I want. That's self-deception. See self-deception is a spiritual cancer that nobody sees coming because the person that's infected doesn't even realize they're sick. You know in 1st John it talks about that, in 1st John 1.8 we read this, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. You know what I noticed while studying that verse this week? I noticed that it doesn't say that Satan is deceiving us, look at it, it says we deceive ourselves. I think that's what makes self-deception so dangerous, it's because when we deceive ourselves we don't even recognize it most of the time. Does that make sense? And if you can't recognize something you can't address something. You're not going to be able to fix something that you can't even face. So I believe that's why this is one of Satan's favorite weapons because man when you are deceiving yourself it blinds you to your need for grace. It leads you to be proud and have pride in your heart. It also keeps you from repentance and that's how this typically works. Once deception takes root in our heart, pride moves in. And hear me when I say this, when pride moves in, God moves out. You see that? That's James chapter 4 verse 6, it says God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
So what does self-deception look like? Here's what it may sound like, it sounds like hey I'm not the problem here or this sin isn't hurting anybody or I've got to get this, I've got to get this under control or this isn't a big deal to anybody else or I'm fine. The truth is you're not fine. You're drifting, you're justifying, you're rationalizing sin while convincing yourself that this is just righteousness. Those lies that we sometimes believe are actually landmines and they may not blow up in your face today but just trust me, eventually they will. Here's what makes deception so deadly. Number one, self-deception dulls your conviction. It dulls your conviction. Number two, it inflates your pride. But number three, it delays your repentance. And man, I really want to lean in on this last one here. Anything that delays your repentance is dangerous because when your repentance is delayed, your restoration is delayed. Do you see that? The longer you say I'm not going to repent is the longer you're going to wait before God can restore your heart. James chapter 1 verse 22 says this, be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourself. Here's what that verse says. That verse says you can read your Bible, you can listen to podcasts, you can come here and listen to sermons, you can say all the right things, you can worship Jesus and sing the right music, and you can still be deceived if you're not obeying what the word of God says. So be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourself. Deception's a big one. And that was number four.
You ready for number five? All right, number five is defiance. Say that with me, defiance. Some people fall into sin and we know those people. Some people slip into sin and we know those people. But some people, man, they just run straight at that sin with their eyes wide open and they know exactly what they're doing. That's what the Bible calls defiance. It's where we openly rebel against God's design. It's when we get to a place where we're shaking our fist at God and we're redefining sexuality and we're ignoring biblical authority and we're justifying the sin in our life and we're living like we have the final say and God doesn't have the final say. Defiance is what flips God's definitions and God's design upside down and says, my truth is better than God's truth. My desires matter more than God's designs. I know what the Bible says, but I'm going to live exactly how I want to live. Do you get that? It's open rebellion against God. That's a big landmine that will blow everything up. In fact, look at Romans chapter one. Romans one paints a sobering picture for us today and it shows us what happens when we live in this world of defiance. Verse 21, for they knew God, for although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God. Instead, their thinking became worthless and God delivered them over to the desires of their heart. Here's what's happening in that passage. God didn't destroy these people. He gave them what they wanted. He let them pursue what they were pursuing and that ultimately ended up becoming the judgment they experienced. I think this is the scariest part of defiance today.
You're saying you want to live in rebellion against God? Do it. Live in rebellion against God, but you need to understand this. Eventually, God will stop fighting you and He will let you have what you were demanding, even if that's the thing that ends up destroying you. This is so prominent in our culture today. We live in a world where lust is being normalized, where sex is being commercialized, and purity is being mocked. But hear me, when you defy God's design, you're destroying what God intends to bless. Does that make sense? When you're living in rebellion against God's word, you are destroying the thing that God wants to bless. Isaiah 520 says, Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness. That's defiance, y'all. That's rebellion. It's living in a way where a holy God cannot bless your life. And a lot of people are doing that today. We're stepping on that landmine and we're blowing up our own life because we're choosing to pursue the wrong things. Hey, get this today. You can't walk in God's blessing if you are running away from God's boundaries. You're not gonna walk in God's blessing if you're running away from His boundaries. This is a landmine that's explosive. And the Bible says this one won't just hurt you, it'll destroy you. In fact, Proverbs chapter 14 verse 12 says it this way. It says, There's a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death. You say, Jordan, how do I avoid that landmine? Here's what the Bible says. You got to lay down your rebellion and you've got to let God start rebuilding your life. You've got to lay down everything inside of you that is defying God's Word and God's plan and God's direction. And you've got to humble yourself to the point that says, God, I can't do this without you. That's how to respond to defiance. You ready for number six? Number six, write this word down. It's the word drifting. Drifting is a landmine that we've got to address. Let me tell you why. In Hebrews chapter 2 verse 1, it says, We must pay the most careful attention so that we do not drift away. We do not drift away. Imagine for a second that you're in a boat and you're in a harbor and you're about to head out to a destination that's a hundred miles offshore. And your
instructions are to point that thing due north and you are to travel at zero degrees for a hundred miles in order to get to your destination. But instead of going due north at zero degrees, for some reason you just go one degrees off northeast. It doesn't sound like much, does it? I mean, it's just one degree. I'm talking about the difference between this and right. I mean, it's just one degree, almost nothing. But here's what happens over time. Check this out. If you're just one degrees off, did you know that after one mile you will find yourself 92 feet off course? It's not too far. It's like from me to that door over there, 92 feet off course. But after a hundred miles, when it's time to be at your destination, if you're just one degree off for that journey, you'll find yourself 1.7 miles off course from your intended destination. So let that be a reminder. Let it be a visual reminder that the longer you travel just one degree off, the further you're gonna end up from where you intend to go. So in your family, in your relationships, you say, well, I'm just one degree off. Not very much when it comes to purity. I'm almost pursuing God's purity, but I'm one degree off. That's a big deal. I'm one degree off when it comes to honesty and being honest in my relationships. I'm just one degree off in being faithful to my spouse. I should be here, but I'm just here. Hey, get this today. A small drift doesn't feel dangerous until you see where it leads. And this is what happens in our spiritual lives as well. We may not be denying God or jumping ship, but we might be just not talking to God like we should. We're stopping gathering with His people. We're not anchoring to the Word of God like we should. Listen, if you're one degree off, you're in trouble. So what happens here is that small compromise will turn into a massive course correction that over time is gonna require rescue and not just adjustment. So don't compromise even in the 1%, don't wake up, don't wake up one day and say that 1% off is okay. Listen, you don't wake up one day and decide to walk away from God. That happens slowly, it happens subtly over time.
It happens when you stop praying and you stop gathering with God's people, you stop prioritizing the word, you become passive, you compromise, you make excuses. And many of us have been there, but I want you to read that verse one more time. Hebrews 2.1 says, we must pay the most careful attention so that we do not drift away. Listen, no one in this room is going to naturally drift to having a better marriage. No one in this room is going to naturally drift into becoming a better father, a better mother, a better grandparent, no. That all requires intentionality, right? You don't naturally drift towards those things. And in the same way, no one naturally drifts towards holiness. You don't drift towards godly character or holy convictions or real righteousness or even a deeper faith. You're gonna drift towards Netflix and numbness, right? You're gonna drift towards comfort and compromise. That's how we are built. We're going to drift towards those things. But listen to me, Jesus didn't die to make you comfortable, he died to make you holy. And when you stop swimming against the current and you start drifting with the tide of the world, you're gonna find yourself far from God, far from your desired destination.
So that's number six, it's drifting. I'm gonna give you one more if you're ready for it. If you're ready, say amen. The seventh landmine is the word desire. Say that with me, desire. That was a little late, but it's okay, I'll take it. But listen, desire is a gift from God. You're like, there's nothing wrong with desires. There's nothing wrong with desires, you're right, but there is something wrong with misplaced desires. Would you agree with that? You and I, we were created to desire things. We were created to desire love and joy and peace and pleasure and belonging. I mean, we can go on and on, that's not the problem. The problem is when those desires start driving your life instead of your life being guided by God. And that's why Paul writes in Galatians 5, verse 16, he tells us, walk by the spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is against the spirit and the spirit desires what is against the flesh. So here's the picture that he just painted. He said, inside of you right now, there is a real battle that is taking place. And let me just say that your desires are going to either send you this way or they're gonna send you this way. Desire is never neutral. The Bible says your desire will naturally lead you
towards the will of God or your desire will naturally lead you away from the will of God, right? So the flesh wants immediate pleasure, the spirit leads to eternal purpose. And the Bible says, whichever one of these you feed is going to grow. So you feed it, it grows. So what are misplaced desires in our world today? What are real misplaced desires that are blowing families up? Well, I'll say this, I'll say I've seen a lot of families ripped apart. I've had a lot of counseling sessions with people that say this, I wanted pleasure more than I wanted purity. You see it's a desire created by God, but which direction are we gonna go? Well, when you pursue pleasure instead of purity, guess what? That's a landmine that's gonna rip apart a lot of stuff. I was pursuing success more than I was pursuing surrender. I was chasing money and things and stuff and I lost my family, right? We have a desire, which direction are we gonna go? We desire approval more than obedience. We're living our life to get all this approval, but man, we don't even care about obeying God. We crave comfort more than we crave character. Listen, we can go on and on,
but when you have a desire created by God, but you're feeding the wrong side of it, and those misplaced desires are fed and acted upon, they're going to become detonators in your life and they will destroy everything that God intends to develop in your family. Hey, get this in your notes today. Unrestrained desire is the fast lane to disaster. Unrestrained desire is the fast lane to disaster. Read James 1 verse 14. He says, each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil, what? Desire. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin. And when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. So here's how the Bible puts it in a simple form. It starts with a desire, all right? That's just not desire. or it's misplaced desire. But when misplaced desire is acted upon, you're feeding the wrong side. He said, that will always lead to sin. And when that sin lingers and lives in your life, the Bible says that sin will ultimately lead to death. But I want you to notice something about this formula. It always starts with something small. You do not wreck your life or your marriage or your relationship or your family overnight. You follow a misplaced desire one step at a time until ultimately you fulfill the prophecy
right here in this formula and it leads to death and destruction. None of us want this in our life. None of us want this in our family. So the question is, how do we avoid the landmines? How do we begin to walk safely in a world full of hidden traps? May I tell you the answer? It's not by living in fear. It's by living a life of faithfulness. Living a life of faithfulness. In fact, I wanna give you four words that show you how to walk differently. Four ways that you can start walking wisely. The first word is the word discernment. You know, if you read 1 Corinthians 2, it tells us that the spiritual person discerns all things. That means that you and I ought to be people who are asking questions and seeking truth and weighing our options and our choices. We're looking beyond the surface. We're discerning the will of God in our lives and in our relationships. Discernment's huge. Second one is the word discipline. It's discipline. Godly homes don't happen by accident. We talked about that a second ago. You don't drift into a godly home. It takes habits and structure.
It takes boundaries and margin. Sometimes the most godly thing you can do is say no to something because you've gotta protect the time with your family. This takes prayer and it takes worship and it takes intentionality to become the family God wants you to be. Last and next, we see the word dependence. This is a big one. And let me just say it this way. We cannot become the family we want to become by ourself. And we don't overcome the enemy by our own strength. The Bible says in order to get there, we need the power of God. We need the spirit of God to guide us so that we can stay due north at zero and not be 1% or one degree off. In fact, Zechariah 4, verse six, it reminds us, not by might, not by power, not by my spirit, but by my spirit, says the Lord. It's the spirit of God that will get us to the destination we desire. And the last word I want you to jot down is the word dedication. If we're gonna avoid the devil's landmines and build our house on the rock, then we've gotta make a real choice today that says, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. That's a personal decision. I can't say that as a blanket statement
over everybody in our church. I can say it over my family though. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, not just on Sundays, but every single day. You know, I heard a missionary talking about a village in Southeast Asia not too long ago. And this particular village was covered in landmines after civil war. And so they brought in a team of D-miners and this team came in and swept the entire village. I mean, the people couldn't get out of their homes. They couldn't walk on the paths outside of the village. And so the miners, they came in, they had the equipment, they had the maps, they had the training, and they walked every square inch of that terrain and identified all the threats. And once they were finished, they took all of that information and all that data and they created new maps. And these maps had all that information. Everything had been cleared. And they went home to home giving these new maps to the residents who had been through so much. One woman, she received her map and she looked at that missionary and she said, sir, this means more than you'll ever know. He said, why is that? She said, because now I finally know how I can walk again. Hey, may I just tell you something? That's exactly what Jesus has done for you.
He's not just warning you about landmines today. He's showing you where they are and he's inviting you to walk differently. He didn't just mark a path. He walked it first. He took the hit. The Bible says he bore the cross. He defeated the enemy. And now he invites you and I to go on a brand new walk that leads to victory. So here's my final question for you today. How long will you blindly walk through the minefield of this world? Hey, today may be the day you allow Jesus to finally be your guide, your savior, your master, Builder if you've never trusted Jesus if your home has been hit by landmines and now you're asking how can I rebuild?
