We hope and pray for God to speak to you today as you seek to live your life all in for Jesus Christ. And now from First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, here's Pastor Jordan Easley. You know, these are crazy days that we're living in. Technology is changing, things are evolving, and there's certain companies and certain movements that are literally changing the world. And I'm not just talking about like the Teslas or the Amazons or the Apples or even AI. There's another business that I believe right now is reshaping the way we think. It's reshaping the way that we live, the decisions that we make, how we spend our money. There's one certain business that I think of today that is, I believe, a modern-day phenomenon. And you, by now, already know what I'm talking about. Of course, the business I'm talking about is none other than Buc-ee's. Can I get an amen from somebody? How many of you have been to Buc-ee's? Go ahead and raise your hand, confess this before the Lord. Listen, if you've ever stepped into a Buc-ee's,

you know that this is not your typical gas station. Can I get an amen from somebody? It is a roadside wonderland that you should experience. You walk in and you instantly realize this place is massive. There are hundreds, if not 1,000 people packed into this place, and they're all moving in every direction. I was in Buc-ee's the other day, and I just stood there. I'm just hanging out by the coffee bar, and I'm just watching people blown away because everybody's going crazy. I mean, they are moving aggressively and decisively throughout this gas station like it is their job. I mean, some people were on mission to find the cleanest restrooms in America. Other people were making a beeline to the wall of jerky or hunting for beaver nuggets or waiting in line for a brisket sandwich that all of you should try, by the way. There were people loading up on souvenirs, people sampling fudge, and they were all carrying a fountain drink the size of a bucket. People watching's a blast at Buc-ee's, y'all. But as I stood there, what impressed me wasn't just all the movement. What impressed me was the mission. Everyone in there was headed somewhere with a purpose. Nobody goes to Buc-ee's to just stand around and observe.

I mean, that's what I was doing, but even as I stood there, I was holding a coffee in one hand and a kolache in the other hand. So even myself, listen, everybody, including me, was on a mission. But I thought this thought as I stood there that day. I thought, you don't go to Buc-ee's to just stand around and do nothing. And then my brain quickly shifted to us. And I thought, you know, the exact same thing is true of us. Those of us who know Jesus, those of us who are living the Christian life, not a single one of us were saved for the purpose of just standing still. We weren't saved to just show up or to sit or to soak. The Bible says very clearly that every single one of us that truly know Christ, we were saved for the purpose of being sent and saved for the purpose of serving the body of Christ. And that's exactly what God's word is gonna show us today. So I hope you have your Bible because Paul's words in Colossians chapter four are gonna give us a clear reminder that faith isn't meant to be stationary. Listen, if you're truly rooted in Christ, then that should move you forward into mission, into purpose, into people and the lives of those around you because being rooted in Christ isn't just about growing deep,

it's also about reaching wide. So get this in your notes today, you ready? If your faith is real, it won't stay private, it'll go public. And we're gonna hear that loud and clear from God's word today. Colossians chapter four, beginning in verse two. If you read verses two through six, here's what you're gonna see. A call to pray and a call to proclaim. Read that with me today. Paul says, devote yourselves to prayer, stay alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us that God may open a door to us for the word to speak the mystery of Christ. He goes on to say, act wisely towards outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt. God gives us a lot of great instruction in these verses and we're gonna walk through them together today. But if you're taking notes, the first thing I want you to see, Paul say to us as the church, is that we ought to pray in a way that opens doors. in a way that opens doors. Notice, he doesn't begin by telling the Colossians to preach louder. He tells them that they ought to pray deeper. He said, devote yourselves to prayer.

That word devote is an interesting word. It's a word that means to persist in something, to be constantly diligent. In fact, it's the same word that's used in Acts chapter two to describe how the early church devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and prayer. So this right here isn't an instruction for us to have lives where we casually pray or we every once in a while pray. This is a charge to have continual and committed prayer, expectant prayer in our life. So Paul's speaking to the church, people like us, and he's saying, devote yourself to that kind of prayer. This isn't prayer that's a last resort. This is prayer as a first priority. So Paul says, devote yourself, believer, to that kind of prayer. He said, stay alert in it with thanksgiving. And you have to ask the question, why? Why do I need to stay alert with thanksgiving? And the answer to that is because effective mission always starts on our knees. If you wanna have effective mission, it starts with prayer. It starts with having eyes wide open to the needs around us. It starts with having hearts that are lifted up to the one who opens doors. By the way, in Acts 14, that's always something that's used to describe gospel opportunities. Open doors are gospel opportunities. So this is a verse that's telling us,

number one, be devoted to prayer, but don't only pray, pray that God would open doors and allow you to have the opportunity to speak the mystery of Christ into those around you who need to hear about the Lord. So he says, as believers, we should be devoted to praying that God would open up doors like that as we interact with people in our lives. You know, I was talking to somebody the other day that just told me straight up. He said, pastor, listen, I've known Jesus for a long time. I've been walking with the Lord as long as I can remember, but I've never in my life had the opportunity to lead another person to faith in Christ. He said, I've had a lot of conversations about church and a lot of conversations about spiritual things, but I've never been able to present the gospel and have someone receive Christ as a result of the conversation, but I wanna do that. He was basically asking me how that sort of thing happens. And I'll tell you the same thing I told them. If you want God to use you to reach people, if you wanna live on mission and make a difference for God's kingdom, that doesn't begin on a platform, it doesn't begin behind a pulpit, it begins in your prayer closet. And that's what Paul is telling the church. He's saying, before we talk to people about God, we need to be talking to God about people. You wanna make a difference, you wanna lead people to Jesus,

you wanna model what it is to walk with Jesus. He's saying, before you talk to people about God, you need to talk to God about people. You say, pastor, why is it so important that we pray and prepare and really spend time with the Lord before we go share our faith? Let me give you three reasons. The first one is because prayer aligns our hearts with God's heart. When you pray, you're aligning your heart with the heart of God. When you talk to God about people first, you're inviting his perspective. And when you invite God's perspective, you're gonna begin to see people the same way God sees people. Hey, you'll become an effective evangelist the second you begin seeing people the same way God sees them. The second reason this is so important is because prayer also prepares the soil before the seed is sown. Think about a farmer. A farmer would never just throw seed onto hard, dry soil. And in the same way, we shouldn't try to just share the gospel without first inviting the Holy Spirit to prepare the heart of the person that we're about to speak to. The third reason is prayer invites

the power of the Holy Spirit. Hey, I need the power of the Holy Spirit in my life. Anybody else? I can't do this by myself. I need God to work in me and through me if God is going to have, if he's going to be able to use me for something supernatural. Let me say it this way. Evangelism isn't effective because we're so persuasive. Evangelism is effective because our God is so powerful. Can I get an amen? Hey, this only works because God is good and he is with us and he is for us. But when we pray for someone before we talk to them, we're inviting and asking the Holy Spirit of God to convict their heart, to bring comfort to their soul, to draw them in a way where our words alone could never draw them. Here's the way I see prayer. You ready prayer is the power line that connects our words to God's work Do you get that prayer is the power line that connects our words to God's work? DL Moody once said every great movement of God can be traced back to a kneeling figure and man That's the pattern we see in Scripture. That's the pattern we see throughout history God moves through people who move to their knees You want God to use you? Here's the thing stop standing up and start kneeling get on your knees and Invite the power of God to work in you and through you if you're gonna be rooted in the mission of God It's going to require great intentionality Think about that No one ever completes a difficult mission unintentionally

Wouldn't you agree? Listen if a mission is tough Completing that mission is gonna require great intentionality. So you say Jordan, how can I become more intentional as being a prayer warrior? How can I be intentional in being a soul winner? How can I be intentional as being a difference maker? Here's where I would start you ready? If you want to be those things you want to do those things I would begin by creating a personal mission prayer list and you can call it whatever you want You can call it a prayer journal But I would begin by writing the names of every single unsaved family member that I know In my immediate family in my extended family the people where God has intentionally placed me in that family I would begin by rating writing down their names and then from there I would start writing down every single friend that you know every friend that you call a friend that you know without a shadow of A doubt if their heart stopped beating today, they would spend an eternity in a real place called hell I think you're their friend for a reason So write down the name of that friend Write down the names of those co-workers and those neighbors that God for whatever reason has placed you in community with Listen, I don't believe that's an accident I believe God puts you in places and he puts you with people and he puts you there Intentionally and so write those names down and make the decision intentionally to pray for them Consistently and ask God to soften their hearts ask God to open up doors and then ask God to give you courage to Speak the mystery of Christ to those that you encounter Hey, don't underestimate the power of persistent prayer. Don't underestimate it Elijah prayed and the rain stopped Hannah prayed and a prophet of God was born Jesus prayed and the entire world was redeemed Prayer isn't what prepares us for the greater work The Bible says prayer is the greater work And so as a person of God, we need to be people of God that spend more time on our knees Begging God to do a work in us and through us a mission is driven by prayer and that's what the Bible says So you want to be used by God? Here's the here's the message it starts in the secret place. It starts on your knees It starts in prayer. So Paul tells the church pray in a way that opens doors

The second thing we see in this text is a message that says we not only should pray in a way that opens doors We should speak in a way that reflects Jesus Speak in a way look at verse 5. He says act wisely towards outsiders Making the most of the time Let your speech always be gracious seasoned with salt so that you may know How you should answer each person in these verses Paul is going to make a shift. He shifts from from prayer to presence And he tells us very clearly that we should act wisely Towards outsiders. Well, let's break that down for a second. What does that mean? Well, that word wisely is an interesting word in the Greek Sophia and it's a word that tells us we should live with skill and Intentionality, so he's telling the church act wisely. He's saying live in a way that is skillful and intentional This is more than a challenge for us to be clever This is about us reflecting the character of Christ in every single interaction in our life So the message here don't miss this is that that we shouldn't just live righteously. We should also live strategically Like when your feet hit the ground in the morning to have a strategic and intentional plan to reflect Jesus To those who aren't yet in God's family. That's what this word stranger means He's talking about lost people people who haven't yet experienced the saving grace of Jesus when he says act wisely towards outsiders He's reminding us That we really might be the only Jesus Someone ever sees if you ever thought about that and I thought about that this weekend There were so many gatherings and celebrations happening across our community And it was fun just to scroll social media and to see the different groups of people And what I observed was there were groups of people where I would know one or two people But I wouldn't know the rest of the group and that's what struck me I thought you know, there are believers in all of these different groups of people. I don't know the other people I don't know if the other people are saved or not I don't know if the other people have said yes to Jesus and died to self and been purchased by the blood of Jesus and They're submitted to the Lordship of Christ, but I do know there's some people

Recognize who are in all of these groups. I mean I thought to myself what a great picture of our responsibility is the church Because we might be the only Jesus someone ever sees and so Paul speaking to people like us saying hey when you Celebrate and you're in a group of people understand God has you there for a reason? He has you there on purpose and for a purpose so represent Christ Well to those who don't yet know him that was the challenge Then he goes on to say what he goes on to tell us that make make the most of the time You see what he's talking about here Every single one of us have been given the gift of time and he's saying I want you to take the time God's given you and I want you to make the most of it in the Greek that phrase literally means to redeem the time or to even buy back Opportunities and man to me in a world full of distractions. I think that's a word that we all need to hear Paul's saying don't just scroll past the moment Right. Don't just waste your witness But be intentional with how you're spending your time in those circles that have placed you in You know the other day Audra and I were hosting something at our house And we had we had several young couples that were in our living room And man, we were talking about all sorts of things. I mean you can imagine we're talking about marriage We're talking about we're talking about leadership. We're talking about family. We're talking about stewardship Like there's a lot of different conversations happening in the room and we talked for a long time But there was a moment in this conversation where my phone started buzzing I don't know if you ever had that moment But if you keep your phone in your pocket, you can feel that vibration And if it vibrates a couple times you you like automatically have to look at it, right? So I just pulled out my phone. I'm like just scrolling through all the notifications and I'm just I start browsing I'm like, bro We got a lot of things happening here and there's just text message after text message and notification after notification and I'll be honest I was very distracted. You've got all these people in the living room having these great conversations and and for about 60 to 90 seconds I mean, I'm kind of tuned out and I'm just scrolling through and I'm catching up and I'm reading all the things and as I Was doing that I got a new text message and this time I noticed when the text message popped up It was from my wife

Who was in the room sitting 12 feet from me Watching me as I open this text and I go to open the text and I open it and this is what I read She said dude get off your phone I'll just be honest. My wife doesn't boss me around like that most of the time but in that moment Listen, she was right. She was right See what she was saying in that text was very simply this it was the mission is right in front of you So pay attention She was saying don't allow distractions on a screen. Keep you from this moment that God has perfectly orchestrated That message was telling me. Hey, you got a lock-in You've got to be a part of the conversation. It was saying don't miss this moment That God has given you Here's something I want to plant in a seed I want to plant in all of your hearts today you ready Mission is recognizing that every single moment carries eternal weight You never know which moment God's going to use and so mission is understanding that God's wanting to use you every single moment Will carry something eternal and that's what Paul was saying to the church at Colossae He said act wisely towards outsiders He said make the most of the time and then if you keep on reading he starts talking about our speech our words Look at verse 6. He said let your speech always be gracious seasoned with salt See in the first century world salt wasn't just a flavor. It was also for preservation It kept things from spoiling So when Paul said your words should be seasoned with salt he was saying the words you speak should preserve the truth Your words should add value your look your words should leave people Thirsting for more and so here's the word for us. Our words are important. Yes, would you agree with that the words? We say they are important and they're gonna point people to Jesus or they're gonna point people away from Jesus Here's something we've got We've got to realize if your words don't sound if your words don't sound like Jesus your witness won't point to Jesus So get this today

You think about the value the importance of your words if they don't sound like Jesus your witness won't point to Jesus go back to the circles that we've been in all weekend long the words that we speak in those circles as We represent Christ represent the body of Christ. They're either gonna point people to him or point people away from him And the thing is they're waiting and they're hungry and they're looking for something real Imagine going to a restaurant starving and Imagine that somebody came comes by you tell them what you want you order a lot of food because you are just dying you you Gotta eat something but as soon as you order the food 30 minutes goes by 60 minutes 90 minutes two hours goes by and nobody's even visited your table Imagine you're just sitting there. You're hungry. You're starving and you know, the food is ready You can smell the food. You can see the food in the window. You know that the food is in the room You know that you're close to what you're needing But man, nobody ever comes Nobody ever brings it. I'd be willing to bet if that were your experience today at lunch today at dinner That you'd be pretty frustrated if you sat in that restaurant and you never got what you needed Well now I want you to think about that same scenario, but I want you to think about your neighbors I want you to think about your friends your co-workers your classmates And I want you to realize that there are people in your life that are starving for hope There are people in your circle and they are longing for meaning. They are desperate for Jesus And the truth is if we don't carry the message to them We're just like waiters that are hoarding all the food in the kitchen Listen the gospel isn't just something to admire The gospel is something to deliver and how are we supposed to deliver this good news? The Bible says with our words What does Paul say in the text? He said let your speech always be gracious and seasoned with salt You know that word gracious is the word charis in the Greek and it refers to God's unmerited favor So when Paul says our speech should be full of grace, he means it should it should echo Jesus He's saying your words ought to echo the kindness and the grace and the patience and the generosity of Christ He's saying let your words preserve the truth and add value and let your words reflect Christ as

You point people to the solution that they're so desperate for Hey try this in your next conversation with somebody who you know is far from the Lord Try to be intentional with this and aim to do these three things. Are you ready? Try to say something gracious and Spiritual and invitational Hey, just try it something gracious something spiritual something invitational it could be something like this like you are important and Valuable to God and you need to know that He loves you he's always loved you and he's pursuing you today And I'd like to invite you to come with me on Sunday as we learn more about that Right something gracious something spiritual something invitational. You know what that is? It's intentional It's intentional Sometimes we like to make living on mission seem like it's so hard We try to make it so more Was so much more complicated than it actually is you don't have to be a preacher or a Sunday school teacher Or you don't have to be a seminary graduate to be the mouthpiece of God. It's really not that complicated In fact a long time ago. I heard a guy named DT Niles say this and I think it applies to today He said evangelism is just one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread That's our job church. It's not that hard But it has to be intentional it's a mission that God's called us to and that's what Paul's saying today He said pray in a way that opens doors Speaking away that reflects Jesus and lastly he says live in a way that contributes to the mission You know when you start in verse 7 and go through verse 17 The final section of Colossians gives a long list of names that are somewhat hard to pronounce They're like names like Tychicus and Onesimus and bless you artist Arcus and thank God for Mark right and Luke, but then you've got a paphras and nympha and Archippus and man when I read Sections of Scripture and like that if you're anything like me I'm a little bit ADD and if I can't pronounce it

I kind of just skim past it and miss the point and I don't even look backwards, right? But but here's my challenge to you if you're like that lean into what this section is really all about Because when you read this section closely, here's what you realize Paul is Sending a message to the church that says this, that the mission of God is a team sport. The mission of God is a team sport. I want you to think about this. Every single name that's mentioned in this section represents a story. It represents a person. It represents a role and a contribution. For instance, Tachikos, he's the one who delivered this letter. Onesimus was a runaway slave turned brother in Christ. Epaphras was a prayer warrior. Luke was a doctor. Mark had once quit the mission, but then he was restored and used mightily by God. So these aren't just acknowledgments, these are affirmation of partnership. Paul right here was validating their contribution and he was saying, hey, every single one of you have made a great difference. These people contributed, they did their part, they moved the mission forward and God was glorified through their intentionality. Here's what I believe God wants to speak to you and over every single one of you today. Are you ready? You matter.

You matter to God. Your role matters. What you bring to the table matters. Your faithfulness matters. Your service matters. Your contribution makes a difference. That's what he told the church in that day and I believe that's something the church needs to hear in our day. You know, in a Roman honor-shame society, you didn't praise a slave or a former slave, but Paul did in this letter. That was anesimus, that was his story. In that world and in that culture, you certainly didn't include women in the mission and then talk about it and yet you read the name Nympha and you realize this is a woman that God used in a great way. But this letter, it just shows you how the upside-down kingdom works. Everyone has a place, everyone has a purpose, everyone has value as a part of the mission and the picture that God gives us of the church is that when everyone does their part, we are so much better together. I can remember talking to our staff at a training that we did about a year ago about this very thing. We were talking about unity in the body of Christ

and how God designed the church to work and the Lord kind of led me to a silly illustration where I wanted to talk about that using a visual of a tug-of-war rope. And it started with that tug-of-war rope and it just gave, it triggered me from middle school. But I started looking at this tug-of-war rope and I was thinking, okay, I'm gonna put four staff people on this side and four on this side and I'm gonna say go. And when I say go, y'all work it out. And man, they just battled. I mean, people were straining and people were stressing and no one was really moving. It just, it was a standstill and I called a timeout. I said, okay, here's what we're gonna do now. And I moved one person from this side and I put them on this side. Now it's three against five. And I said, we're gonna run it back. And I said, go. And you know what, it was still pretty much even for the first 20 seconds, 25 seconds, but then eventually the five took over the three and they defeated them. And then I said, let's take it to another level. I moved one person from this side over here and now you have two people over here. You have six people over here. And man, it wasn't too long,

but they did put up a good fight. Five seconds, seven seconds. And then of course the big group took over the small group. I said, let's take it to another level. I put this person over here and now you've got seven over here and you've got one over here. And I said, this is still gonna be a battle. It was because PJ was over here. He's the biggest kids pastor in the country. And so I put PJ over here. I'm like, PJ, it's one versus seven. I want you to give it your best, put your back into it. I said, come on, man, do everything you can. It wasn't three seconds after I said go. The seven, even though they were much smaller, the seven took over the one and these were victorious. Last but not least, I said, we're gonna take this one step further. PJ, I want you to come over here. And now with a tug of war rope being right here and all eight people on this side, I said, this is a picture of how God designed the church to work. I said, because when everybody is doing their part, when everybody's pulling on the same side of the rope, when everybody's giving what they have to give, you are guaranteed victory 100% of the time. Listen, that's how winning teams work. And that's how winning churches operate.

The Bible says we are to equip and mobilize every single person to live on mission, where everybody's doing their part, where everyone is contributing and giving and serving and praying. And together, when we all pull on the same side of the rope for the glory of God, God says the church will win 100% of the time. In verse 17, I want you to see this verse. Paul closes this letter with a powerful personal challenge. He said these words, tell Archippus, pay attention to me. Pay attention to the ministry you have received in the Lord so that you can accomplish it. Now, I want you to think about this verse, I just want you to do it a little differently. This time, I want you to personalize this message from the Lord to you. I want you to put your name in this place of Archippus. He's saying, tell Stephen, tell Charles, tell Dan, tell Julie, tell whomever. Pay attention to the ministry you have received in the Lord so that you can accomplish it. This is a personal message to believers in the church. And I believe that's God's message to us today, that you have a ministry if you're saved. You have been given something by God to accomplish in your time on planet earth. So the Lord's speaking to our hearts today and here's what I believe the message is, you ready? Don't ignore the message,

don't ignore the ministry I've given you, but embrace it, embrace it. Listen, what has God called you to do? What ministry has he entrusted to your hands? Maybe it's leading a group, maybe it's serving kids or rocking babies. Maybe it's mentoring teenagers or praying with people. Maybe it's hosting neighbors in your community and building community around Jesus and not other things. Maybe it's serving and celebrate recovery and helping those who are on a journey of finding hope. Hey, there are countless opportunities, but the question is, what is God calling you to do? Because whatever it is, pay attention to it and be faithful to it. Now, a few years ago, I was pulling out of a church parking lot in a small town and there was a sign at the exit that said these words, it said, you are now entering the mission field. And I liked that reminder. It was one that told us that the mission field isn't just overseas, it's over the fence, it's across the street, it's in your own home. You don't have to be a missionary to live on mission, you just have to be rooted in Jesus. You know, in the 1800s, there was a quiet, faithful Sunday school teacher who was introverted and a little bit shy, but he had a burden for one of the teenage boys in his class because he knew he was lost.

Teacher wasn't flashy, he wasn't famous. In fact, he wasn't even very secure in his ability to share Christ with somebody else. But the Lord put that boy's mind or his name on his heart as he was praying one day. And he decided that he was gonna visit that teenage boy at his job, a shoe store in Boston. He was so nervous, he was so insecure, but he decided he was gonna walk into that store and do what God was calling him to do. He found the boy in the stock room and he faithfully shared the saving message of Jesus Christ with him in that moment. It wasn't dramatic, it wasn't loud, but it was faithful and it was obedient. You know, that quiet conversation changed that boy's life. But not only did it change his life, it ended up changing the world. You see, the boy's name was Dwight L. Moody, D.L. Moody. That's a guy I quoted about 10 minutes ago in this message. But if you don't know him, Moody went on to become one of the most influential evangelists in history. This is a man that preached the gospel to over 100 million people on planet earth, long before media and long before microphones. He was the guy who founded the Moody Bible Institute. He helped spark revival movements on both sides of the Atlantic. But it all began with one ordinary man making himself available to be used by God.

Listen, when you make yourself available, God will make you usable. Can I say it again? When you make yourself available, God will make you usable. The question is, are you available to God? Because if you are, God will use you. He didn't call a single one of us to simply sit and to soak. There are no designated observers in the kingdom of God. So the question is, how is God wanting to use you to move his mission forward? And will you do what God is calling you to do? As a pastor, the best advice I can give you for your daily walk with Jesus is to start each day in the word. While this may seem obvious, many people struggle to find the time to pause for just a few moments every single morning and to spend time with the Lord.
