And tonight we're gonna be talking about the word joy a little bit. And I was talking with my boss about this a couple of years ago and he goes, you know, joy is an acronym, right? And I was like, no, I never heard that before. And what does it stand for? And he said, for the priorities in your life, Jesus, others, and yourself. And it just made a whole lot of sense to me. Hey, man, there is power in praise, amen? I don't know what you came in here with tonight, but I pray that God is giving you freedom from that. All right, so I wanted to start tonight with a quick question. I want you to real quick think of your life. Think of your obligations, your responsibilities, your relationships. And how many of you, being rigorously honest, do you want true, lasting joy in your life? Raise your hand. Amen. Man, that's beautiful. I've been in church, how do I say this? I've been involved in the church for 16 years now. And I've heard so many different definitions of joy. A lot of which kind of leave me more confused about joy. It is kind of hard to define, but what I've kind of come to in my mindset is joy is this deeply rooted contentment within the believer. It's like this supernatural peace, no matter what situation we're up against, no matter what's going on in our life. It's kind of this underlying contentment and peace. 20 years of my life, probably the first 20 years of my life, I never had joy. In fact, if you had joy, I probably thought you were a pretty fake believer. person, or I hated you, you know, or was jealous of you, and, you know, the first 20 years of my life was grief, loss, pain, trauma, abuse, addiction, homelessness, and so I never really understood joy. I understood happiness, you know, and I chased pleasure because pleasure would provide a sense of temporary satisfaction, and so my thought of joy was like, man, if you get enough happiness, then that's joy, right? Well, I feel like if happiness is a roller coaster, where sometimes you're happy, sometimes you're not, joy is this undercurrent of hope. It truly is a fruit of the Holy Spirit within the believer. My name is Jonathan. I have a new life in Christ. I am-
Hey, what's up? I am recovering from substance abuse, from depression, and this week I've been struggling with ungratefulness. We've been going through a series. If you're here, if you're new for the first time tonight, first of all, welcome. So glad that you had the courage to walk in here. Yeah, give it up for the first time. If you're watching online, Tipton, Johnson County, Crossroads, Independence, we're so happy you're here tonight. I pray that God moves in your life tonight in a powerful way. We've been going through a series here at Regen called In His Image, and our hope is to kind of bounce through the book of Psalms, because it's full of such deep emotional truth about how God has created us as individuals. And tonight I want to talk about joy. If you haven't figured that out yet, it's been pretty resounding. Psalm 21, verse 1, because I feel like David gives us the answer. Where can we truly find it? In Psalms 21, verse 1, it says, the king shall have joy in your strength, O Lord. In your salvation, how greatly shall he rejoice. True joy is found in God's strength, according to this verse. Not in our strength, in God's strength, sustaining us, working for us, saving us. And what's interesting is most people will spend their entire lives trying to become strong enough to finally feel secure. So if I just get enough money, if I just have that 401k, or if I just get enough that my family will be secure, then I'll have joy. Or if I can finally get sober and stop falling into this pattern of self-destruction, then I'll have joy. How about if my marriage finally just heals, or if my spouse would start just meeting my unrealistic expectations, then yeah, I'll have joy. How about when my anxiety leaves, when my depression goes away?
If people finally respect me, I'll have joy. And we think these things, and we hope that they'll give us this sense of security. But the problem with this is human strength is so fragile. So fragile. I mean, I see it all the time. It just takes one diagnosis, and boom, all of your weaknesses are exposed. One betrayal by a loved one, one relapse, one funeral, all of these can expose the fragility of our strength. If you're familiar with the Bible, David was a king, right? He was a mighty warrior. I mean, David was all of that, military leader, he was a poet, an artist, a musician. He understood strength, if there was anyone. Yet he says, the king shall have joy in your strength. Not my strength, not my ability, not my control, thy strength. Man, this is the secret to Christian joy. It truly is. I'm giving you a gold right now. Joy comes when we stop worshiping our strength, okay? David, I mean, he was an absolute legend, right? He had every reason to boast in the things that he had done. He killed a giant with a rock. That's bragging rights for life, right? I mean, he was, gosh, he won all these battles, he led these armies, he had hundreds and thousands of loyal, faithful men who would follow him into battle. He built an entire kingdom, yet he understood something dangerous. that self-reliance eventually becomes self-worship. Self-reliance eventually becomes self-worship, and self-worship always collapses. If you're familiar with King Nebuchadnezzar, you know, he became prideful at the kingdom
that he had built, and man, did God humble him. Pride goes before the fall. Self-worship always collapses. Imagine a man who has a broken leg, and he has a wooden crutch that he puts under his arm, and he walks around with this crutch, but the crutch has a small break in it. The wood has cracked a little bit. You know, it may hold him up for a week, a month, two months, and at first, it's totally fine, but eventually, what's gonna happen? Snaps. The crutch will snap, and I feel like that is the truth with our strength. Pressure will always reveal the weakness in us. You know, I hear that illustration of a crutch, and I'm like, what kind of fool would walk around on a broken crutch? But the reality is it's all of us, right? We do it every day. We think our money is gonna hold us up, our intelligence, our ability to control things, the substances that we use to medicate our life, the relationships that we have, our personalities, our charisma, our businesses, careers. The list just goes on and on and on, and eventually, it breaks, and then where are we left? It's why some of the most outwardly successful people are inwardly the most miserable, okay? Because human strength was never designed
to carry the weight of the soul. In Jeremiah 17, it says, cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. The flip side of that is beautiful. It says in verse seven, blessed is the man who puts his trust in the Lord and in the Lord's strength. I mean, that's step three of regen, is it not? We decide to trust God with our lives and wills, right, by accepting the grace of God's grace through Jesus Christ, and so one of the hardest things that God does in our lives is allow us to discover our own weaknesses, and it is definitely the hardest things we go through, but oftentimes, some of the most beautiful things, in a way, because typically, the pattern is we don't normally seek God's strength until our strength fails, right? For me, it was my addiction. It was my addiction that revealed the weaknesses in my life, the weakness in my character. Sometimes it's grief and loss that exposes our weakness. Sometimes it's marriage or parenting that exposes our weakness. Leadership will always expose weaknesses, right? But weaknesses can become a doorway to joy if we learn to depend on God in them. You know, the Bible says, my grace is sufficient for you. This is God talking.
My power is made perfect in weakness. That's why Paul says, I boast in weakness so that the power of Christ will rest on me, right? He's like, I will boast in the weakness. God's strength produces a different kind of joy. Notice that David says, the king shall have joy in your strength. Not the king will use God's strength or the king will admire God's strength. He has joy in God's strength. Why? Because God's strength means I don't have to carry the weight of life alone, right? I don't have to suffer alone. I don't have to fight against sin on my own. I don't have to face the uncertainties of tomorrow by myself. God's strength always sustains us. If you've been around church any amount of time, you've probably heard of the old story, Footprints in the Sand, right? It's basically a story about this man who is walking. He has this dream where he's walking with God and they're walking in the sand and there's footprints and he looks back over his life and he realizes that there are seasons in his life, the more difficult seasons, where instead of there being two footsteps, there's only one, and he says to God, why did you abandon me in my hour of need when I was going through loss and grief
and pain and failure? And God replies to him, this is when I was carrying you. That's the story of the footprints. And that is what Psalms 21 is all about. Joy. born when we realize that God has carried us further than we could have ever carried ourselves. The prophet Isaiah says he gives power to the weak. Not the impressive, not the strong, he gives power to the weak. God specializes in strengthening exhausted people. You ever think about that? That's why Jesus says, come to me all who labor heavy laden, I will give you rest for your souls. Think about an extension cord, okay? An extension cord by itself is useless. Maybe you can tie a lasso or something, but by itself it's useless. It's only effective when it's plugged into something. It's what it's connected to. And so a disconnected Christian, someone who's not abiding in the Lord, becomes spiritually powerless, right? It drains us, it exhausts us, we become anxious, angry, hopeless. The word says that apart from him we can do nothing. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, but the fruit won't grow unless we're abiding in the vine. Amen? When we are connected to God, there is a strength beyond all human ability, supernatural strength, that leads to joy, everlasting joy. David tells us exactly where to find it. The joy of the believer is not I am strong, it's I'm connected to the one who is. Maybe you're here tonight and you've never experienced this kind of joy. And man, I get it, I've been there myself. Maybe you're here and you've been trusting in your own strengths and the pressure of life has become unbearable. I pray that you would not leave here tonight without plugging into God's strength by accepting the free gift of God's grace that's offered through Jesus. Amen? I'm so excited tonight, I get to introduce tonight's testimony, Andy Crowther. Everybody give it up for Andy. Come on up, Andy. All right, thank you. What a blessing. Thank you, Jonathan. That was, I don't know that I even need to talk here because that's my life right there. So, putting everything in my own strength. So, my hope is that I'm going to be able to share
with you tonight how that fell apart for me. And it was ugly. I'm going to start just by letting you know that it's a miracle, I mean, what God's done in my life that I'm able to sit here and talk to you about something that's frankly quite embarrassing, could be quite embarrassing if I wasn't freed from that, from pride, and shameful. So, you know, that reminds me of Matthew 23, 12, whoever exalts himself will be humbled, whoever humbles himself will be exalted. So, all right. So, good evening. My name is Andy. I have a new life in Christ. Hey, Andy. Hey, everyone. I'm recovering from a lot, anxiety, control, idolatry, trauma, depression, suicidal ideation, drug addiction, and more. I'm so thankful to be able to share my testimony with you this evening. And I want to start by stating the obvious. I haven't arrived. I still struggle with many things at times, but the freedom I've received through Christ several months ago is truly unexplainable. He brought me out of a two-and-a-half-year trauma reaction. He's freed me from guilt and shame. He's given me a calmness, a patience, a peace that truly surpasses understanding and that I'd never experienced before in my life and never imagined was possible. He continues to change me to remove all forms of pride and continues to produce in me a desire to die to myself daily. I want to mainly focus on my marriage and the past few years of separation, going through a separation and divorce, but a little bit about my past. I would have said I believed in God when I was younger, but I didn't know Jesus. My childhood wasn't all bad. I had people in my life that loved me, but there was family dysfunction as long as I can remember, as far back as I can remember. Parents divorced when I was four. Generational trauma and mental illness is thick on both sides of the family. I experienced emotional trauma, some physical trauma, and ultimately was raised by the world in many ways. God has healed me of unforgiveness and bitterness related to my past, particularly with my father. I've struggled since I can remember with significant anxiety, a fear of rejection, abandonment, a need to understand and be understood,
difficulty trusting others, among many other things. And from an early age, I tried my best to control life as much as I could in order to prevent the anxiety, the uncomfortable feelings. And when I couldn't, it led to running from them physically. or mentally, emotionally, trying to find anything to fill that hole in my heart. This was seen in a life of idolatry and sin, including but not limited to early striving for achievement in sports and academics, gluttony throughout my life, and then starting in adolescence, alcohol use, tobacco use, sexual promiscuity, pornography, a wide variety of drugs anchored by a chronic daily marijuana use for several years, gambling addiction, and crime and delinquency for a period of time. Despite all of this, I was able to wear a mask fairly well, never had enough consequences to deter me from my approach of controlling things and running or escaping when needed. Out of college, ironically, I landed a job as a criminal justice professor, which is where I met my wife. Got married too quickly and started a family right away. I felt like all I ever wanted was a family. Looking back, there was a deep desire to be loved by others. Another attempt to fill that hole in my heart. There was an occasion of physical abuse early on in my marriage. About three months into it, I drank too much alcohol,
became jealous of my wife, who was pregnant with our first child at the time, and in trying to communicate in that state, I physically blocked her from leaving a hotel room. Side note, that jealousy would continue to be something I would struggle with throughout the marriage. This drove me to Jesus, meeting him for the first time at age 26, but unfortunately, I didn't trust him with my life or my will at the time. I stopped the alcohol, the marijuana use, the tobacco use, the behaviors that I saw were keeping me from holding on to my family. I sought to increase my knowledge of Jesus, read a lot of Christian books, but overall, it was mostly academic, intellectual. Again, there's that control. John 3.30 says, he must increase, but I must decrease. Unfortunately, I wasn't willing to decrease at the time. I made plenty of mistakes that I don't have time to cover tonight, but I believe there was a lot of good in my marriage and family over the years, having three beautiful children. There was nothing that I loved more than my family, and unfortunately, that included Jesus. Ultimately, when the people we love are made idols, we will crush them under our expectations. I was still wearing the mask, didn't address my anxiety or past trauma, and so the attempts to calm the restlessness continued,
seeing through a focus on career achievement, providing for my family, looking to my wife to feel loved and valued, and finding outlets such as occasional gambling, kids' achievements, gluttony, and the anxiety and control would occasionally show up in impatience and irritability, and periodically, my issues would cause greater dysfunction about every six months to a year. It was always something similar. I would feel rejected by my wife and or get overwhelmed with life stress, look to my wife to feel loved and cared for, attempt to communicate, more rejection when that failed, wanting or threatening to run, and shutting down for a couple of days, and on a couple of occasions, believing my wife was done with our marriage because of the lack of communication, despite never wanting a divorce, I sat my kids down and let them know we were getting one. After a little while, it would blow over. We would both concede, and we would move on with life. I can only imagine the pain and hurt this caused my kids. A few attempts at marriage counseling throughout the marriage always ended very quickly with the decision that I needed to address my past, understandably so, which I ultimately never did. 17 years later, my wife finally had had enough
with that pattern, that hurt, and a little over three years ago, she told me she was done and getting a divorce. This is when I found out what happens when you have idols that are threatened to be taken away from you. Not only did I feel like I had no control, I was also faced with realizing how my issues had affected my family over the years, and the guilt and shame was crushing. There were hurtful things that were said on both sides, but rather than turn to and wait on God, I believed the lies about myself and my relationship with my kids, and this led to a struggle and reaction that I can't fully explain, one that would last for over two years. Looking back, it seems as if I was a completely different person much of that time. I sought God in a variety of ways, starting immediately after my wife said she was done. I also sought secular means, including therapy, medication, along with several other approaches. But at the same time, I was trying to fix it myself. I know it ultimately was a choice I was making, but it didn't feel like it at the time. Above all, I know that it was a spiritual battle. Secularly, it could be called different things, a mental health crisis, a mental break, a trauma reaction. It was a constant cycle that included some mental clarity
lasting several days at most, but mostly consisted of constant feelings of rejection, attempts to fix and control, feelings of hurt and self-pity, bitterness, a lot of guilt and shame, depression, despair, intense suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, lashing out, isolating, hurting those I love the most. I continually tried so desperately to change my wife's mind, to hear that she still loved me and there was a chance to heal our marriage. And when that failed, or when something hurtful was said to me, I said way more hurtful things back. When I spiraled, I shared suicidal thoughts on multiple occasions. It was complete emotional dysregulation, a living nightmare. And sadly, I caused my family to live through it as well. It caused a lot of trauma. Ooh, excuse me, thank you. There were also frequent attempts during that time to block out the pain, anything to try and stop the pain and fill the hole in my heart. Marijuana use, again, alcohol use, gluttony, pornography. I could see the death and destruction in the path I was on, but I couldn't understand why I couldn't stop it, that control, why I wasn't receiving healing, why none of the secular approaches helped to stop the cycle I was in. I got to the point where I begged for God to take me home.
I was so tired. Tried to get the courage to take my own life, but he saved me over and over again. I didn't see it fully at the time, but he was there, just waiting for me to relinquish that control. And I don't fully understand what happened over those couple of years, and thank you, Jesus, I don't need to anymore. Amen. I do know that I wasn't willing to surrender completely, and for me, that's what it took. That's where God's freedom was found. And when I finally accepted the truth of Christ's humility and the need to die to myself and was willing to give up the control and need to understand, that's where the freedom was found. He didn't just free me from the spiritual prison, the reaction I was in. He has given me and continues to work in me freedom from anxiety, control, and much, much more. That joy, a joy I've never experienced before. My circumstances didn't change. My marriage wasn't saved. My actions resulted in hurting those I loved, strained relationships with my children and my ex-wife. I hate that I hurt others, absolutely hate the sins I committed, but I believe God will heal. I trust that he will heal their hearts of the hurt and trauma that they've experienced.
Now, Satan still attempts to get in, but I know where to turn and I know that as I abide in God and as I continue to pursue absolute surrender in Christ, that Satan has no chance. Praise God for that. So I would encourage you, deny yourself, surrender, pick up your cross, abide in Jesus, stay where Jesus is with the hurt, the pain, the regret, shame, intrusive thoughts, whatever it is. Fight the urge to leave, stay where Jesus is and regen, prayer room, church or closet, wherever that is. And when you realize you walked away from him, go back. He's always there waiting. Believe in his truth over your mind. He promises freedom, I've seen it. Now, I could have spent all of my time here today just expressing my thankfulness to the regen ministry. Regen saved me, literally, I believe it saved my life. I'm so thankful and blessed by the people I've met and grown to love through regen. I'm thankful for the leadership team, my groundwork leaders, my group leaders as I went through the steps, the men I walked through it with, my group leaders' wives, my leaders in leadership training, my fellowship leaders and the men I now am walking, or my fellow leaders and the men I now am walking through the steps with as a co-leader. I've been so blessed by this ministry. But that being said, Psalm 115, one,
not to us, oh Lord, not to us, but to your name, give glory. For the sake of, yeah, that's it. Thank you, appreciate you. Thank you. Okay, another round of applause. That was awesome. Andy, thank you for your testimony.
