Praise the Lord. Well, praise the Lord. If anybody wants to praise the Lord, let's stand to our feet. He's worthy. It's good to be here, region. Come on. We're going to worship together. Let's put our hands together like this. Come on. Does anybody have joy this evening? We know where our joy comes from. It comes from the Lord. Come on, sing with me. So, this is the day you were made, so I rejoice and be glad, rejoice and be glad, amen. This is the day you were made, so I rejoice and be glad, rejoice and be glad, amen. This is my strength, sit on my soul, hold my soul, bless his name, all that is within me say, the joy of the Lord, the joy of the Lord is my strength. I've got the joy, the joy of the Lord, he's giving it to us freely. Hey, so let it rise up like a river, overflowing Holy Spirit. Come on, let the joy pour out. Let it pour out with no limits. It's an overflowing, overflowing Holy Spirit. Come on, let it rise, let it rise in this place. Just like a river. Lord, overflowing, overflowing Holy Spirit. Lord, let your presence pour out upon your people.
Overflowing Holy Spirit. Come on, I've got the joy, he's giving it to us freely. He deserves all praise, glory, and honor. We're just going to rejoice his leaving. We're going to give him all glory. The joy of the Lord, say, the joy of the Lord, the joy of the Lord is my strength. Said I'm thankful for the joy, Lord, the joy of the Lord, it is my strength. The joy of the Lord is my strength. Said, oh my soul, bless his name. Oh my soul, bless his name. Oh my soul, bless his name. Oh my soul, bless his name. All that is within me, say, the joy of the Lord, the joy of the Lord is my strength. Yeah. The joy of the Lord is strengthening me. I believe it. Yeah. Come on, somebody give God praise in this place. If you truly have joy, if you truly have peace, if you know where your help comes from, it comes from Jesus, hallelujah. Glory to your name, Lord. Amen, we are worshiping God tonight, Jesus tonight, because he is worthy of all glory and honor. And if it wasn't for the Lord on our side, come on, where would we be? We thank God for the joy. We thank God that we have something. Our foundation is not built upon what we can see, not built upon what we can touch,
but it's built upon the word of God. It's built upon, it's built upon his goodness. It's built upon his word. It's built upon all that he has spoken to us. And so we give him glory and honor. We just wanna thank you all for coming this evening. If you're new here, we just wanna say welcome to Regen. This is a place where we can be transparent, we can be open and honest, because God is the only one who can save. God's the only one who can set free. He's the only one who can bring freedom. My name is Angela, I have a new life in Christ, and he's delivering me from self-protection. He's delivered me from pride and control. And I just wanna thank you for being here as we're just worshiping with God, worshiping God this evening, because there is something that happens when we lift up our hands and we lift up our voices in praise, and we set an atmosphere of God to be glorified. There are things that happened, chains are broken, lives are changed. The Holy Spirit has a free reign to be able to do work in the lives of those who call upon his name. So we're gonna worship him tonight. We're gonna give him glory, because he is due.

My name is Jeff, new life in Christ. Past struggles, the shame of a divorce, being an executive pastor, control beliefs, sins of self-protection, unbelievable cynicism. I want to say hello to our campuses, Crossroads, out of Johnson County, Tipton, and Independence, all right? Now here's the deal. David's speaking after me, and it's gonna be the worst handoff ever. So David, I'm just gonna say your name and come on up, all right, because I just know it's gonna end bad. So here we go. We're in Psalms talking about our emotions, okay? And Angel was up here leading the worship
with her team, and there's this phrase, I will put my trust in you alone. That's a powerful song. So Psalm 63 is about three or four verses I'm gonna share in this idea, but it's around the idea of joy. And how do you have joy in this world? So Psalm 63 says this. Oh God, you are my God. Early will I seek you, but I want you to grab this poetry here my soul thirsts for you and my flesh longs for you. But this next phrase, in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. Now here's the context. David most likely wrote this, and he's either running from Saul, trying to kill him, or more tragically, he's running from his own son later in life, Absalom, also trying to kill him. He's in Judea, and there would be droughts, no water. And he's like using that as a metaphor, I long for God, but there's no water here. So here is what I want to introduce to you. It's simple. We are humans, and that means we're thirsty. Just let that sink in. And I don't mean physical water. Our nature is we're thirsty. We have longings. So I oversee Master's of Arts in Counseling at Calvary University, and then I oversee training counselors here. It's kind of a trick question. I've shared this before. I want to make sure counselors know what humans are. So I always ask, are humans cognitive beings making choices and decisions, or are they emotional beings with deep longings and
desires? You say it's not a fair question. It's both. Oh, shut up. All right, here we go. Because how you answer that question is how well you understand a human. We are not cognitive beings making great choices. We are highly emotional, passionate beings driven by deep longings that God gave us. But here's the problem. It says that we are in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. Now, what do you say we long for? I'll give you a few. We long for love, success, companionship, respect, stuff, fame, peace. It could go on and on, but they're deep, deep longings. Now, later in the psalm is this verse, and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips. Really, David? You long for God, but there's no water around. But yet you still praise him. You have joyful lips. So once again, we live in a dry and thirsty land. Now, here's three ways to look at that. First of all, at times in your life, there's no water anywhere. And that might be why you came here tonight. You're longing for things and nothing's working out. You're not finding peace. You're not finding relationships. You're not finding joy. You're not finding success. I'm not saying things are bad. You're not finding these things. So there's no water at all. Next, and this is kind of true, you're tapping into some temporary water. Now, here's the deal. All the water down here eventually dries up. It'll quench your thirst for a while, but it dries up. It's either no water, temporary water, and it all goes away. Now, years ago, there was a guy named Larry Crabb, wrote a book. I got a couple of slides. I want to talk to you about these longings you have. I promise you, there'll be a good part at the end. But he put your longings into three categories, okay? Casual longings, critical longings, and crucial longings. So just take a look at that. Casual longings, critical longings, and crucial longings. Go on to the next slide. Here's your casual longings. We all have them. We long for physical comfort. We long to be secure. We long to be safe. This will remind you of every psych 101 class you ever took in college on the hierarchy of needs. Your basic longing. You want those things. If you don't have those things, you're going to be thirsty for them, but you want them. Next to that was a category of critical longings.
Those are relationships, companionship, healthy relationships. That's your purpose, your identity. More significant than the casual longings are the critical longings. Here's the bad news. There's no promise in the Bible in this life you'll get either of those met. You say, well, I'm doing pretty good on them. Well, good for you. I'm being overly facetious. They'll be met for a little while, fair enough. But eventually, what meets those needs, it all goes away in this life, doesn't it? It does. Your critical longings. The last one was the crucial longings. You say, what are those? That's the fruit of the Spirit. inner peace. That's God. That can be met in this life. And you'll find in the end, that's all there is. Even the other longings that are fulfilled are only because of Him. Now, last week was interesting for me. It was sad. Being a pastor, I go to a lot of hospital visits in my life. And I've been with people when they die. Every once in a while in this life, it's your family. And that was mine last week. So I had an uncle. So of all this side of the family, there's two left, my dad and my uncle. My dad's outlived his two younger siblings. He's got dementia, excessive Alzheimer's, so I'm taking him to the hospital. My uncle, severe diabetes. And I finally caught up with him. Now, this is the uncle, you know, any of the uncles in your life that are kind of you don't know, but you have cool uncles. Who's got a cool uncle? All right? Don't judge me. I was 11 years old, man, 1977, Let There Rock came out, man, and there's Angus Young on the cover, and my uncle bought me that album. It was like my second ACDC album. That was a cool uncle. But you know what? The body won't keep the fluid off, and dialysis every other day wouldn't work anymore. So he made a decision. He's going to go off dialysis. They say three to five days to live. So I'm making the trip down. These are awkward, because I love him, but I'm going to say bye. And here's the thing about the dialysis, if you haven't dealt with it. He's not in the room with a mask on. There's no ventilator. There's no oxygen needed. He's eating fine. He's got no IVs. He's completely cognitive. He's having a conversation like I'm having with you. But his body won't get better, and it's going to get worse. And literally, he's saying bye to all of his family. So I go down, take my dad, and I'm in the room. I'm not going to overly dramatize this. A lot of tears. Literally, this is the last time I'm going to see you in this life. And I'm going to leave, and I'm going to wait.
Probably two days later, he went home from the hospital, went off dialysis. He was dead within 24 hours. A lot of pain, a lot of hurt. But here's the reality. I was kind of blown away. I believe in heaven, and I believe in Jesus. But there's a measure of grace you get in that situation that I don't have as a spectator on the outside. Because he could go longer. He could take some significant steps with medical procedures. It won't get the water off the lungs, but he'll stay around to make the decision to go. So here's the reality. He's thirsty, but he's saying bye to family. He's saying bye to this life. He's saying bye to this world. I thought about this when I looked at Psalm, and he had joy. That matter of fact. Psalm 63.8 says this, and here's the key. I cling to you, and your right hand upholds me. Follows close is the King James there, Hebrews cling. My uncle at the end, who was he clinging to? He ain't clinging to family. He ain't clinging to this world. He ain't clinging to respect, or wealth, or friendships, or anything. He's clinging to the one thing you got when it's all said and done, and who's that? God. He'll go on to see relatives, and I'll see him again. I said I'll see you on the other side. And I cried, and I left. And then I went down later, and I spoke at his funeral. So here's the thing. If you want joy in this life, eventually the only thing to cling to is God. But then it says his right hand has you. So I'll leave you with this thought. It's an illustration. I got grandkids. I'll go see them in Boston later this... summer, three little ones, two boys, five, three, and then their younger sister. The two that are five and three, that's war, man. They are rough. They're growing up in Boston, too. They even talk tougher in Boston than they do in the Midwest. I'm going to walk them down to this park, neighborhood park, and play, but there's traffic all around. So the reality is, I'm going to hold one of their hands, and they'll hold on to my hand. They'll cling to me, but you know what? That little hand clinging ain't worth much, but I trust them to hold on to my hand in traffic, yes or no? No way. They'll cling, and it lets me know they love me, and they're holding on to me, and they're
afraid of the traffic. What's going to keep them out of the traffic, them clinging to me or me holding on to them? Yeah, I'm not letting them go. They could kick me, spit, fight with their brother, try to run away. I'll just pick them up and hold them like that, okay? Here's the deal. If you want joy in this life eventually, you better cling to the only one that's eternal. And here's the beauty of it. When you're clinging to Him, that's not what keeps you attached. He's got a hold of you. So you might be here tonight with none of those longings met and nothing working out in your life. In the end, your job is to cling to Him, but even if you don't hold on so tight, He's got a hold of you. David. Thank you very much. Thank you. Check. Check. Oh, good. That was great, Jeff. Thank you. Mike? You here today? Mike Berry? You're good? How about Mike Williams? All right, good. All right, Mike's here. Any other Mike's here?
They told me to do a Mike check, so. I'm recovering from. Hey, hey, guys. I'm recovering from people-pleasing, enabling negative self-talk along with the usual products that people want. My vision is clearer and more optimistic and optimistic, even when I use my arbeiteng tools, which a lot of us seem to have. Negative self-talk along with the usual pride, lust, and pickleball addiction. Let's just pray for a minute and get serious, but again, I want to thank Jeff because that was a tough lesson tonight, but he's always good, always good. Dear Father, once again, we are so thankful for you in our lives. Without you, we are nothing. We need you for everything. Here to watch over this night, we pray that you would open hearts and minds and spirits for those that haven't let you in yet, that you would indeed knock down the door and let them hear you. In Jesus' name, amen. The Bible verse tonight, Titus 3, 3-7. We all have got that on our list. Reach in. We'll say it together if you want to. For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, he saved us. Not on the basis of what deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to his mercy by the washing of regeneration and the renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace, we will be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Amen. Love that verse.
That is what reach in is all about. Some background on my life. I'm the sixth of seven kids. My dad divorced when I was four years old. That was back in 1959. Both parents remarried, and my dad had three more children with his second wife. So he had ten kids. The divorce settlement said that we had to live 90 minutes away from or within 90 minutes of living close to dad. I'm sure that's why we ended up 90 miles northeast of here in a little town of Breckenridge, Missouri. Anybody have heard of that? All right. I'm amazed because that's a tiny town. As a child, I thought I was the only kid who had a dysfunctional family. That's a laugh out loud right there. First stepdad was an alcoholic and would binge drink. He was unemployed half the time. Oldest brother was a bully and completely terrorized and abused my brother and I, who were the closest in age. I found out more recently that he terrorized everybody in the family, it wasn't just me. This brother didn't fare well when he went to college. And our dad thought it was because Breckenridge high school didn't prepare him well enough. However, it was drinking and playing cards instead of attending class that was why he didn't do well. Regardless, my brother and I were sent to a Catholic boarding school
to finish our high school. Being raised Catholic, but only attending church rarely besides the holidays and a couple of summer catechism sessions, is all the religion I received besides mom warning us not to accept invitations to church from the Baptist neighbor kids. That's a Catholic thing, I think. So back to all boys school in Aspen, Kansas. Away from home for the first time at age 15, we were provided an excellent education but also introduced to underage drinking and a variety of illegal drugs being used. We became weekend warriors drinking every weekend. However, we had to attend mass every Sunday morning before breakfast, which felt like abuse rather than religious training to us teenage boys. My stepdad, 55 years old, died in the middle of my sophomore year. And I wasn't sure I'd be going back to that school. But I did, and three years at this school did help me get into college. My real dad died of cancer at age 52, my sophomore year at UMKC. Quitting school and restarting numerous times, working two, three part time jobs, I managed to complete my BS in nursing in 1980. However, it seemed I owed everybody on the planet money. So I worked full time, three 12-hour shifts at my main job and worked for an agency at other hospitals on my days off.
That's where I met my future wife, Nadine. She was a nurse supervisor who was very nice with a cute smile. She had been divorced and raising two kids in Oak Grove, Missouri. And her kids were 12 and 13 when I met them. I blame them for my white hair. We dated, lived together, and married about 14 months later. She then likes to say she was raising three kids at that point. Things went pretty well. And after the kids graduated high school, we moved to Blue Springs to be closer to our jobs. Circumstances had put a strain on our marriage, house payment three to four times larger than it had been, and making three car payments. Anyway, my wife decided it was time to go back to church. So we visited several churches before attending a Baptist church just a half mile from our home. It was a Christmas Eve candlelight service, 1988. Nothing too deep, but a beautiful gospel message that was prophesied between 600 and 700 years earlier by Isaiah 53, 5, and 6. And I'll read it to you in a different version than they have up here. But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. And then Daniel 9, and then John 1, 1.
In the beginning was the Word, already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. And John 1, 14, regarding the birth of Christ. So the word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness, and we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father, one and only Son. This all clicked that night. This was the beginning of my eyes being opened, connecting the dots between Old Testament, New Testament, and discovering the difference between religion and relationship made all the difference. At this point, I wasn't sure who wrote the book of John, but I knew he, Jesus, was changing me. I dove into Bible study and was baptized in April of 1989. Of course, this was just the start of my walk with Christ. God was preparing us for a season of loss. Over a span of 20 years, my mom had died in 1990 from complications of diabetes and heart disease. My two older brothers died from alcoholism, both before they turned 50. One committed suicide and the other liver failure. More recently, I lost three sisters, one to kidney disease, one to respiratory disease, and one to cancer. So everything runs in my family. And my son-in-law died suddenly of an MI at age 56 in 2017. I left my daughter raising two boys, and most tragically, we lost our oldest grandson
to gun violence in January of 2018. He was just 17 years old. His friend was, his friend was stealing his gun from him and rustling, he was accidentally shot. With each loss, we grew closer together and closer to the Lord. When we draw near to him, he'd draw near to us. In 2023, another grandson, who was living in our basement at the time, overdosed on a fentanyl-based kind of drug. Respiratory and cardiac arrested. We were both nurses. We were doing CPR, and I'm calling 911. We had a whole boatload of paramedics in our house, and they had Narcan with them and readily available and administered, saved his life. In these trials, as we drew near to God, like I said, he draws near to us. Fast-forwarding for the sake of time, because we're probably out of time. I started attending Bunnet Life at Blue Springs in January of 2024. We jumped right in with First Step, Next Step, Discipleship One, hearing of Reach In through the promotional videos every week. We thought this was exactly what our grandsons needed as we were still struggling with issues of drug abuse and relationships, jobs, life goals, et cetera. So to draw them into Reach In, I offered to transportation every Monday night.
But the first night in orientation with Bob, going over the list of 107 reasons to attend Reach In, I could relate to more than half of them to one degree or another. God showed me I had plenty of issues to work on myself. My unresolved issues were blocking me from the life of true freedom in Christ. But having been a Christian for 36 years and married for 43 years, my journey had been slow and steady progress. But from the beginning of our groundwork book, God seemed to hit the refresh button, and I started hearing through journaling and dreams. He gave me a short story. I had never written a story before or since, but the story emphasized the possibility of walking on the edge of listening to God and obeying what he's telling you is indeed very possible. Trust and obey, it came back to. The 12 steps are an organized tool that help process the issues of our life. The process can be challenging and sometimes painful, but keeping focused, pressing forward has deepened my faith in Christ as well as in my brothers in Christ. Step four, inventory, was my most difficult for me, and I likened it to dredging the bottom of the Mississippi River. I was still carrying resentment and unforgiveness from childhood trauma.
The best part of reach-in is walking and sharing this experience with 12, 13 brothers in Christ whom I witnessed change right. before my eyes. Seeing the Holy Spirit changes through the power of prayer with the fellowship and friendship happening in our group helped me see I was not alone in the struggles. Spiritual battles were being won week by week. Thanks be to God and glory to God. I've seen victories over porn, fear, anxiety, alcohol, complicated family issues, and reconciliation in difficult relationships. My faith has been restored in the next generation as well as four of these brothers were in their 20s. I know I will see all of these men in leadership training, serving in the church and on mission field, changing lives in their community and families. Already they are taking up the torch and sharing their lives with other people. Through regeneration, people are being saved and inspired to follow Christ. How great it is to have a front row seat to the Holy Spirit work in people's lives. Before regen, I had gotten lazy in my walk with Christ, living on his grace and not doing much memorization, not sharing the gospel with others, spoiling my grandsons by making it too easy for them to slide by in life. Regeneration has rejuvenated my love for Christ, his word and the desire to share his love,
grace, joy with all whom I come in contact. I cannot meet everybody's needs, but Jesus can. Most of you heard the story, I'm closing here. I've heard the story about the second grade teacher who asked her class to raise their hand if they were going to heaven. Everyone raised their hand except for one, Mikey. She said, Mikey, why didn't you raise your hand? Aren't you going to heaven? And he said, heck yeah, teacher, I just thought you were getting the bus load to go down. That's funny, but here's the question. In your own mind on a scale of zero to 100, how sure are you whether you're going to heaven or not? Everyone has that number in their mind. Please, people, if your number is not 100%, I'm confident you do not fully understand the gospel of Jesus Christ. He paid it all. He paid our debt. All of our sins are forgiven, past, present, and future sins. Please talk to any one of our response team tonight before you go. Group leaders, any volunteers with a name tag on, it would make their day to guide you to this truth. May my life always be an arrow pointing upward. Thank you to our group leaders, our mentors, worship leaders, and Abundant Life Church for keeping us focused and moving forward to our next step. Reached In is giving people the tools
and a safe place to put those tools to work. My name is David. I have a new life in Christ. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. All right, David's going through leadership training now and just wants to pour into the other men that are going through the same process. So man, we're just excited how God's gonna continue using you, David, in regeneration.
