Quit Living Under The Table

We are in week two of our old school series that we are learning modern truths from ancient stories in the Old Testament. Last week, we looked at the incredible story of Esther and how God is 1,000 steps ahead of us preparing the way and prepping us for his purpose. If you are not here, I cannot encourage you enough to go back and listen to that message. I really believe it's gonna help you and encourage you in a great way. But today, I told you when we started this series that we were going to look at some very familiar stories that many people are aware of and know about in the Old Testament, and then we were gonna look at some very obscure stories in the Old Testament that not a lot of people are very familiar with also, and today is one of those. I doubt there's gonna be a handful of people in this room, in all three services, and all two at the UC or at the correctional facilities that may have ever remembered reading what we're gonna talk about today. It is very unusual. It is an event that happened millennia ago, and it's amazing. It's just seven verses. It's just seven verses, and it's unusual, but it is pregnant with spiritual principles. So what I wanna do, I just wanna read it to you, okay? This is an event that happened in Judges 1,

verses one through seven, and then I'm just gonna come back and unpack it for you because there's a lot to unpack, but here we go. After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the Lord, who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites to fight against them? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up. Behold, I have given the land into his hand. And Judah said to Simeon, his brother, come up with me into the territory allotted to me. I'll explain this in a moment, that we may fight against the Canaanites, and I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you. And so Simeon went with him. Then Judah went, and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek. Then they found Adonai Bezek, Adonai Bezek at Bezek, and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. Adonai Bezek fled, but they pursued him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes. And Adonai Bezek said, 70 kings, 70 kings, with their thumbs and their big toes cut off, used to pick up scraps under my table, as I have done, so God has repaid me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. After the death of Moses,

Joshua was the next leader of Israel, and he was the one that actually led them into what is known as Canaan, or the promised land, and he led faithfully for 28 years, and then Joshua passed away at the age of 110. When Joshua passed away, he named no successor, so the people prayed and inquired of the Lord who was to lead the nation into the next conquest, because remember, when they were given the promised land, it was not empty, it was full of giants and full of people that had to be conquered for them to take and possess the promised land, and so each one of the tribes of Israel were allotted land, but that land was occupied, and they had to fight to be able to get their allotment that God had given to them, and when they go to the Lord and inquire who's gonna lead them into the next conquest, God responded that it would not be an individual, but that it would be one of the tribes of Israel that would lead them. There were 12 tribes in the nation of Israel, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulon, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Benjamin, and the Lord said the tribe of Judah is gonna lead the nation into battle. Now, this is interesting, because the name Judah means praise, all right, and so God said, I want praise to lead the fight, and that's an interesting sermon for another time,

but the Bible says that they come to a town called Bezek, and they overthrow it and capture a king by the name of Adonai Bezek. Now, from all accounts, he was a great military strategist because this was not his birth name or the name given to him when he was born. It was a name that was given to him after years of demonstrating and proving his great military might. The word Adonai, you'll see it later in the Bible used for Jesus himself. It means Lord, Adonai means Lord, Bezek means lightning. He was literally known as Lord Lightning. One commentary that I read said that he was clearly known for the speed and ferocity of which his fighting style occupied. He had conquered 70 nations and 70 kings, and Adonai Bezek would plot, plan, strategize, prepare, and then just at the right time, when they were at their most vulnerable. vulnerable place, he would strike like lightning. He was ruthless and effective. And he had a very unusual practice that he did to the kings and a very practical reason for it. Every time he would capture a king, he would cut off their thumbs and cut off their big toes. By doing so, he took away the power of fight and the power of flight. They no longer possessed the ability to do either. And then, as an act of dominance and humiliation,

he would chain these kings under his dining table, literally, and these men, who were once used to the finest things that life could afford, would be forced to live off the scraps that they threw to them under his table. He was fierce, he was brilliant, he was cruel, and when he is captured and the Israelites see what he has done to these 70 kings, they render justice to him in the same manner. Now, as unusual a story as this is, and I know it is, it's very unusual, the question would be, what possible relevance and modern truth could we possibly extract from this story today? Pay attention, lean in more than you could possibly imagine. And the reason I say that is because, let's flatten the floor and say this, we have a modern-day Lord Lightning. There is a modern-day Lord Lightning. There is a real enemy, and you need to be on guard and aware that he is after you, he is after your family, and he is after me. Now, I've had people say to me over the years that come to church, they go, Pastor, I mean, seriously, I hear you talk about this, I hear you preach about this, do you really expect me to believe that there is this red little dude running around with horns and a pitchfork? And I go, no, bro, not at all. That caricature of the devil has done more harm than good

because it has made people not take him seriously. The truth is much more terrifying than that. The Bible says that he was an anointed cherubim. He was an angel specifically and uniquely created by God, distinct and different than all of the other angels. He was unique in his ability, he was distinct in his presentation, he was unique in the power of God. And he was cast out of heaven because of pride. And the Bible says that for now, he still has formidable power, he hates God and everything God loves, which includes you and me. And the scriptures warn us over and over and over again, not to take him lightly and not to brush him off like he doesn't matter, and too many people do. See, if you're in a fight and you don't know you're in a fight, you're a sitting duck. If there's a fight happening and you have an opponent, but you don't know that you're in a fight and have an opponent, you're a sitting duck. And it's one of his strategies. One of his greatest strategies is for people to not take him seriously or for him to go unnoticed and for people not to be aware of him. In 1995, maybe you've seen this movie if you're old like me, okay? In 1995, there was a movie release called The Usual Suspects.

Don't know if you've ever seen it. It's a pretty cool flick. I gotta be honest with you. There is a scene where Kevin Spacey is playing a crippled criminal named Verbal, but he's actually a major criminal and a mastermind named Kaiser Soze, pretending to be Verbal. And he's being interviewed by a detective who doesn't know the truth about his real identity. And in this iconic scene, here's what Verbal says. He said, the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't exist. Lot of truth to that. Lot of truth to that. Convincing the world that he didn't exist. But the scriptures speak to him over and over again, including Jesus spoke about him maybe more than anybody in John chapter 10 and verse 10. The thief, he comes and he's only got three things on his mind. There is nothing else that the thief is about. There is nothing else the devil is about. This is his entire plan. To steal, to kill, and to destroy. That's all he's about. It's all he's ever been about. It's all he's ever gonna be about. To steal, kill, and destroy. Then first Peter says this.

Be sober minded and watchful. You better not sleep on this dude. That's what he's saying. You better not sleep on this dude and act like it don't matter and that he's not after you. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. And this Lord Lightning wants to do to us, listen carefully, what the same ancient Lord Lightning did to them. I'm gonna share these four things that he wants to do and then I'm gonna show you that Jesus did not die and then rise from the grave for you and I to live under the enemy's table defeated as Christians and followers of Christ. But he died and rose from the grave not for you to live under the table but to give you a seat at his. There's four things that Adonai Bezek did to them 5,000 years ago, and there's same four things that modern day Lord Lightning wants to do to you and I. Number one, he wants to dethrone us. He wants to dethrone us. The first thing Adonai Bezek did when he conquered a king was he took away his authority and dominion. These men were sovereigns. They were rulers. They weren't peasants. They weren't just people in the king's court. They were kings.

There were power in their words. There were power in their deeds. They were once strong, now they're weak. They were rulers, now they're being ruled. They were used to having dominion over a kingdom. Now they're being dominated. They were accustomed to being in total control. Now they're being controlled. Adonai Bezek understood, listen to this, that you cannot break a kingdom until you first break the kings. You cannot break a kingdom until you first break the kings. As long as the kings were still in authority, they could still wage war, they could still make commands. Did you know what the Bible says about you and I? I grew up in an age that I used to sing old hymns in my mom and dad's church. And most of those hymns were about we are weary pilgrims pressing on. We are holding on till Jesus comes. And it portrayed us as some little, weak, anemic things that were just subject to the world waiting for the redemption of Jesus to come and to bring us back. That is not what the Bible says about you. That is not what the Bible says about believers. Watch this, Revelation chapter one. And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness and the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth,

unto him that loved us, washed us from our sins in his own blood, watch what he calls you, and has made us kings. You're a king and a priest unto God. And his father to him be glory and dominion forever and forever. Contrary to popular belief, y'all, we are not just little, weak, weary pilgrims pressing on in this life, holding on, and trying to survive another day. When we were saved by grace, we have been given an elevated status by God. He says we are sons, we are daughters, we are kings, we are priests. One scripture says we are heirs to God and joint heirs with Jesus, made to sit together in heavenly places. Listen, man, we have been given spiritual power to live a different life, to walk a different way, and to accomplish meaningful things for God, for his kingdom, and for other people. And the Bible says the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, Romans 5, lives in you. Children of God and followers of Christ are not weak, little, anemic things sitting around waiting on scraps from the world. We are called and equipped to forge ahead, take new ground, and advance the kingdom of God. But one of the enemy's goals is to dethrone you

and to dethrone me, and he does it by deception. Because listen, it doesn't matter how much spiritual power you actually have. If you don't believe that you have any power, you will never attempt, you'll never strive, you'll never try, you'll never exercise it. It doesn't matter what you actually have, it matters what you know, believe, and understand that you have. If you've ever been to the circus, if you've ever been to the circus and seen a 4,000 pound elephant chained by his ankle to this little toothpick of a stake in the ground, I went as a kid and remember thinking, that don't make no stinking sense. He's an elephant, he could pull this whole tent down. How in the world does this little stake control the elephant? Well, let me tell you how they control that elephant, what makes that actually work. It works because when he was a baby elephant, they chained him to a wall, and he would pull, and he would pull, and he would pull to no avail, and he simply grew up believing that as long as he felt that chain around his ankle, there was no use to even try to break free anymore, and even though he's no longer that weak little baby elephant,

but a full grown 4,000 pound behemoth, filled with power, he is controlled by nothing but a small stake. They have dominated him by deception. He could pull the whole place down, but as long as he feels it around his ankle, they have killed his will to pull and to fight. The enemy wants you to believe you're nothing. He wants you to believe you're nobody, that great things are only accomplished by people better than you, other than you, because he knows that if you ever truly discover who you are in Christ, you are unstoppable, and the greatest nightmare that he's ever seen in his life. If you ever discover who you are in Christ, if you ever figure out what he has given you, deposited to you, what he has prepared for you, and what he has imparted to you, you are going to be unstoppable. You'll live for the kingdom, you'll share Jesus with others, you'll give hope to the hopeless, you'll live the love, you'll live for Christ, you'll do good everywhere that he goes. The only way, and he knows it, the only way to stop. The kingdom of God is you have to break the kings. So he's after you to dethrone you. Watch it. Number two, he wants to disarm us.

When Adonai Bezek cut off their thumbs, they no longer could handle a sword or a spear. They would no longer be a threat offensively to him or to anybody else ever. They could no longer handle a weapon of war and were a threat. Well, you say, well, how is that possible to us? How does he try to disarm us? Hold on to your hats. Ephesians chapter six. Finally, brethren, be strong in the Lord and the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over the present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God. And I want you to watch the whole armor of God. You're gonna see a bunch of defensive armor and there's only one offensive weapon. There's defensive, but one offensive weapon. Be able to stand the evil day and having done all this day and stand firm, having fastened on the belt of truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness and a shoes for your feet,

having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace and all circumstances taking up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one and taking the helmet of salvation. Now there's one offensive weapon and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. The Bible, the word of God, he calls the sword of the spirit. Listen, listen. The reason there are so many Christians who have been saved by grace, but still live in disappointment and defeat is because they have been disarmed and have no grasp or grip of God's holy word. They don't read it. They don't know it. They don't understand it. They don't know what it says about their marriage. They don't know what it says about sex. They don't know what it says about money. They don't know what it says about living a holy life. They don't know what it says about their out of control emotions. They don't know what it says about anxiety or fear. And the enemy uses all of those things to control God's people because they don't know the word of God and the sword of the spirit. This is why we constantly challenge you

as your pastors to get in the word. Not because I'm trying to make you a good little Christian. Not because I'm trying to make you get a gold star from God. Hey, they read their Bible today. Good job. I'm trying to help you. I want you to get in the word. I want you to know the word because I wanna arm you. If you don't know the word, you don't have a weapon. You become defenseless. You know what God said in Hosea four and six? My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Not lack of effort. Not lack of ability. Lack of knowledge. People are not defeated because of situations and circumstances. They are defeated because they lack a working knowledge of the Bible to be able to address and counteract what the enemy is throwing at them in life. Go to Matthew four. Matthew four says the Bible says that Jesus was driven by the spirit of God into the desert. And when he went into the desert, he was tempted there 40 days and 40 nights. After fasting 40 days and 40 nights, the enemy shows up and tempts Jesus himself. And when he tempts him in three different occasions, you know how Jesus counteracted the temptation?

Now listen, he's Jesus. He could have with one wave of his arm and with one word shut the devil's mouth. But the way that he counteracted the enemy when he tempted him was he said, it is written. Second time, it is written. Third time, it is written. Why did he do that? Because he wanted to give you and I an example to the common average believer how you win in this life. It is written. We win through his word. Listen, when the enemy attacks your marriage and he's going to, you better know what's written. When he comes after your children and he's going to, you better know what's written. When he comes after your peace with anxiety and fear and depression and discouragement, and he will, you better know what's written. The only reason I'm standing on this stage today preaching is because my mama was a samurai cat. Samurai, Jack. She knew how to handle a sword better than anybody that I ever, she would quote it to me all the time. When I was a full-blown hellion, full-blown hellion, and people who knew me will say he's not exaggerating when he says full-blown hellion. My mama would quote it to me all the time. She would say, raise a child in the way he should go. When he's old, he'll not depart from it.

I'd roll my eyes. She'd say, roll your eyes all you want. It's the word. She'd say, the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. I pray for you every day, I'd roll my eyes. She'd say, roll your eyes all you want. She'd say, for he is able to do exceedingly abundantly, son, above all that I could ask or imagine according to the power that works in me. She was a ninja, bro, and she would tell me all the time. She would say, you can run from me all you want, but you'll never outrun the spirit of God. She was right. She was right. But she was just slicing and dicing, cat. She knew it, dude, she knew it. And even when me and my brothers were lost as a ball in high weeds, bro, she clung to it. And because she clung to it, we are where we are today. You better know what is written, because I'm telling you, he wants to disarm you. If you don't know the word of God, you are disarmed and defenseless. Number three, he wants to disable us. You say, what are you talking about? When Adonai Bezek cut off their big toes, listen, he took off their ability to maintain balance. They did not have the ability to have a firm foundation to fight or walk from.

Our enemy has the same goal. He wants to disable as many believers as he can. You say, pastor, what are you talking about? Let me give you a definition. A disabled believer is a person who may indeed be a Christian, but there is no consistency in their life at all. They're not consistent in any part of spiritual development. They're never established or reliable. They're up one day, they're down the next. They're on fire for God one day, they're cold as ice the next. Oh, they love God's house about once every six weeks. I'm preaching. And they wonder why their life's a wreck. And they blame God. They say, well, man, I gave my life to Christ. I mean, I prayed the prayer. I got baptized. How come all of these bad things are happening in my life? How come I have no power in my life? How come I have no victory in my life? Bro, you've been disabled. Your spiritual toes have been cut off. Ephesians four, Paul talked about immature believers who were so flimsy in their faith that they could be, I quote, "'blown about with every wind of doctrine.'" They knew so little of the word of God and were so unsettled in their faith

that anybody with a smooth voice could talk them out of God's word and get them to doubt God and run after false religions. It is the will of God that you be consistent. It is the will of God that you be stable. It is the will of God that you be founded and grounded. Psalm chapter one, go read it. He talks about the blessed man. What is a blessed man? He says it like this. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful, but his delight is in the law of the Lord. In his law doth he meditate day and night, and he shall be like a tree, planted by rivers of water that bringeth forth fruit in his season. His leaf shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. He said, I want you to be like a tree, rooted, grounded, stable, not blown about with every wind of doctrine. How about this one? First Corinthians chapter 15. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast. Be steadfast. Be steady, not inconsistent. Be immovable, like a rock,

always abounding in the work of the Lord. Ephesians six, we just read it. It said, having done all to stand, stand firm in the faith. It is the will of God that we not be dethroned, that we not be disarmed, and that we not be disabled, but that we be steady and firm, rock solid. Number four, the enemy wants the disgracious. It wasn't enough for Adonai Bezek to kill him. It wasn't enough to kill him. I mean, it would have been better if he'd just killed him. But he wanted to humiliate them. And so he took them after he had conquered them and dethroned them and disgraced them and disarmed them and disabled them. And he would literally chain them under his table like dogs. He wanted them to be reminded daily, you're under my feet. He wanted to be reminded daily who he was and who they were. He debased them and disgraced them to the point that he took the will to fight right out of them. They were lower than a peasant living under his table, eating scraps they would throw to them. The enemy wants to do the same to you and I. And his chief tool to do it is discouragement. And here's how he does it.

He'll use your faults. He'll use your failures. He'll use your sin. He'll use your struggles. He'll use your hangups. He'll use the secret issues that you deal with that nobody else knows about. And he'll constantly throw them in your face. And he'll use condemnation and shame to make you wanna quit and to give up on God. He'll say things like, who do you think you are? And don't think I'm any different than you. In fact, it's probably worse for me because he knows I'm gonna stand on a stage and preach God's word. And if I told you how many times that I felt unworthy to do it, because he would say to me, you hypocrite, you're gonna stand on a stage. Who do you think you are? And try to preach to people and tell them, when you know what you struggle with in your life. So I have to remind myself, I am not who I say I am. I am not who he says I am. I am who God says I am. It's the only way you can do it. You better arm yourself with this one. Now, there is no condemnation. You better know this one. You better know what's written.

You better know what's written. You better arm yourself with the word of God. When the shame tries to come, and don't think he don't do it to me either. He does it more to me than he does it to you. Do you wanna know why? Because he knows I'm gonna stand here every week and tell you the word of God. And if I told you how many times that he has said to me, who do you think you are? What audacity do you have standing on a stage and telling people this stuff when you know what you're struggling with? And I have to know what is written. I have to, I'm not trying to psych myself up. I am going back to who God says I am, not who the enemy says I am or who I say I am. I have to go back to who he says I am. And he said, if I'm in Christ, there is no condemnation to them that are in Christ. And because you belong to him, the power of life-giving spirit has freed you from the power of sin and death. I say, I'll tell you who I am. I'm free, I'm forgiven, I'm washed in the blood. It's by his grace that I'm saved. It's not my power, it's his power. I'm not standing there on behalf of myself. I'm standing there on behalf of God, his word, and his grace to tell the people how to be free.

That's what I'm doing. That's what I'm doing. You better know what's written. God says, I don't label you by your faults. I don't label you by your frailties. I don't label you by your failures. I do not label you by your shortcomings or by those moments where you stumble and fall because if you are in Christ, here's what God says, I no longer see you as you are. I see Christ as he is. When he looks at you, he doesn't see a struggling weakling If you are in Christ, he sees the righteousness of Christ. He has imparted his righteousness to you. It's the great exchange. He took your sin and he gave you his righteousness and you stand not in your own power, but you stand in the imputed power of Jesus Christ. I got seven minutes. I wanna show you something. There were 70 Old Testament kings. I saw something just the other day when I was working on this message. I wanna show you 70 New Testament kings. I wanna show you the difference. Jesus called together in Luke chapter 10, some of his disciples and followers and he paired them up and he's about to send them out into many different cities to do ministry where he eventually will come. So he sends them out before himself

and he wants to teach them a lesson. The Bible tells us this and you're gonna get this in the text. He wants to teach them a lesson about the authority the kingdom of God has given to them. He wants them to understand it is not you, it is me in you that makes the difference. That's what he's wanting to teach these 70 disciples. And so the Bible says in Luke chapter 10, one through three, the Lord now chose 72 other disciples and he sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit. These were his instructions to them. The harvest is great and the workers are few, so pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest and ask him to send more workers into his fields. Now go, watch this, I hate this line. And remember, I'm sending you out as lambs among wolves. God, lambs among wolves? Come on, man. I mean, how about tigers among wolves? Okay, elephants among wolves. What's a wolf gonna do to an elephant? But lambs among wolves, he did it on purpose. He did it on purpose, with a purpose, for a purpose. So you go to verse 17, watch this. Here's what happened. And the 70 returned again with joy. They discovered something. Saying, Lord, even the demons are subject unto us,

but not because of us, we've discovered it's through your name. When we go in your name, when we do ministry in your name, when we operate in not our power, but your power, we have seen that the devils and the demons recognize you and the power of you in us, and they are subject unto us. And he said to them, watch this, I saw Satan fall like Lord lightning. He said, I saw him. I was there when pride entered his heart. I was there when who was the anointed cherubim became the enemy, and I watched what God did to him. He fell like lightning from the sky. Behold, I want you to see this. Behold, I give you, everybody say this, come on loud. I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the. Power of the enemy. Why two powers? There's two powers in one verse. In the English, it's just power. But if you go back to the original text in Koinon Greek, it's two completely different Greek words all together. Jesus said, what I have given you, as my followers and sons and daughters, is exousia. Over all the dunamis of the devil. I've given you exousia over all the dunamis of the devil. Well, what does it mean? Exousia is delegated authority.

Dunamis is raw residual power. Here's what he says. I'm not sending you out to match dunamis with dunamis because you will die every time. You are no match for the devil. If you try to match dunamis with dunamis, he's bigger than you, he's smarter than you, he's swifter than you, he's more powerful than I, and he will kill us every time. He said, I'm not sending you out with dunamis against dunamis. I have sent you out with exousia against dunamis. It's delegated authority. Let me put the cookies on the bottom shelf. One of the things I love about this time of the year is bow hunting and NFL football. Now, I love college football too, but I'm an NFL football dude. And if you go home this afternoon, you're gonna have all afternoon of NFL football. It's amazing this time of the year. And you're gonna see something today if you watch NFL football. You're gonna see this gray-headed, 65-year-old, 150-pound man with a shirt on with stripes. And then you're gonna see him staring at a 320-pound, six-foot-five defensive lineman. And there may be a conflict today on the field. And this defensive lineman may have a real problem

with the call that the referee makes. And when he walks up to that little referee, if it was dunamis against dunamis, it's over. He could take one hand and choke him out with just one hand. Dunamis against dunamis don't work. But see, one's got dunamis, the other's got exousia. I'll say, I'm preaching. See, I'm telling you something. See, behind one, there's just muscle and weight and might and residual strength. Behind another is the National Football League. And if this guy wants to keep playing for money, he's gonna do whatever the little old dude says to do. And if he tells him, get off the field for targeting, he's gonna tuck his head, he's gonna turn, he's gonna walk off the field and he ain't gonna touch him. Behold, I have given you exousia so that you are not some weak little weary anemic pilgrim pressing on in this life. The enemy is not gonna have his way with you. There will be hardships and there will be temptations and there will be difficulties, but you will always win when you know that it is not dunamis against dunamis. I stand behind you. And when the enemy sees you, he's not afraid of you, but the God, the Father, God, the Holy Spirit and God, the Son is behind you. And he knows that when you speak

and you declare he will not have my family and you decree he will not rule my marriage and you decree he will not intimidate me through fear, anxiety and depression, I will have peace that passes all understanding by the power of the Word of God and the Spirit of God that lives in me. You win, you win. He's hoping, he's hoping you don't believe me today. He's hoping you don't believe me.
