Planted... But Is There Fruit? | Andra D. Morrell

by video. We want to go in big church, so they came in here with us. Is that all right with y'all? I know. I'm glad you're in the house of the Lord. Thank you to the worship team. We're going to have a powerful worship night on Pentecost weekend. It's going to be the last Friday of this month, so mark your calendars. We're going to go in. Somebody say, we're going to go in. We're going to go in. Michael, make sure my clock is on because I want to make sure I'm on time. Give me a clock. Amen. You guys feeling good in the house of the Lord? It's baptism Sunday. I'm excited about baptism Sunday because I'm excited about life change. I'm excited that people are raised to life. I know this is just a symbol of what we do, but transformation is happening. I'm excited that people get an opportunity to not just have a relationship with a God that sometimes maybe you feel is distance, but a God that is alive and well, loves us, and wants to fight our battles so we can be back in community with him. I'm excited today because one of my boys got baptized today, and I'm super excited. Yes. We've been in a series called Rooted, and this has been a really good series because I believe that there's a principle that God gives us in his word about being rooted. Sometimes we may use that word planted. I'm going to expound on this today, but what is it good to be planted if nothing is coming out of your life? I want to take it a step further because in the kingdom, I got my first point already. God does not measure your intentions. He measures your fruit. Here is the tension that we have. We live in a culture that celebrates visibility over vitality, appearance over authenticity, leaves over fruit. We find this in Mark 11. Jesus walks up to a fig tree that has leaves but no fruit, and he curses that fig tree because it had the appearance of it but didn't have any fruit. Today, I'm going to go back to the Old Testament and read from the Old Testament, Psalms 1. If you can go, we're going to Old Testament. Somebody say Old Testament. If you got the Bible, you ain't got to go far. Just stay in the first part of that half of the Bible if you're on your digital phone. I want to encourage you today, but I want to also teach us today. Psalms 1, blessed is the one who does not walk in the steps with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord. Let me give you a little bit of theology here. We have this in the NIV, but if you go back in some translations, it says the way of the Lord. We find ourselves in a New Testament. Jesus says,

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one gets to the Father except through me. So if you can kind of understand where Jesus has said that, let's go back into the Psalms and says, but who delights in the way of the Lord and who meditates on his way day and night. That person is like a tree. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water. Here it is, which yields its fruit in season, whose leaves does not wither. Here it is, whatever they do prospers. That's the kind of life I want to live. That's the kind of life I want to live. Pastor Rod has been teaching us these past three weeks. He said our first week growth happens unseen. And then our second week, you can go back into our YouTube and find these messages. Second week, the soil determines the outcome. I'm going to preach on that a little bit today, but he has a good message on that. Go back to YouTube. You'll be on YouTube. YouTube for all sorts of buffoonery. You know, be it ASMR stuff in here, I'll be watching people carpet clean. Anybody watch people carpet clean? It is the most satisfying thing. I'd be in here hours like, ooh, how did you get that rug so dirty? Go back and listen to the message. Stop looking at carpet cleaning. Second week, he said the soil determines the outcome. Third week, he said, we all live in the same dirt. We all come from this broken world. We live in the same dirt. Today, I want to talk, as we talked already about being rooted and planted, today I want to expound on what is your life producing? If we're in good soil, my question will be, what is your life producing? If you're in bad soil, what is your life producing? Because being planted is not the goal.

Fruit is the goal. I'm going to say that again, because some of us didn't get it. Being planted, being rooted is not the goal. Fruit is the goal. In Mark 11, we see that Jesus cursed the fig tree. And what we find is we can look alive and still be fruitless. Ah, come on, church. We can look churchy, but ain't no transformation happening. Some of us, we've got the language. Some of us, like me, who grew up in church, my whole life, I was born on a pew. I've been in the church my whole life. I've been with God for a long time. We got the language. We got the language. We've got the worship. Some of us in here, we've got the outward posture of worship. And some of us, we've got the good of church attendance. I know sometimes when we out there greeting people, it's like when you miss a Sunday, oh, pastor, I miss a Sunday. But I'm going to come every week now. We got the church attendance. We're trying to have the aesthetics. But all that is just leaves. But if I were to inspect your life Monday through Saturday, this is a question we got to ask ourself over and over again. Where is the fruit?

I said that like Pastor Sarah preaches. She nods together. Where is the fruit? That's what you better remember that point. When she gets to yelling, you better, oh, you better add a note. You better get it. When it comes to growth, leaves equal appearance, but fruit equals evidence. Yes. God is not moved by leaves. Listen, you can shout and praise all day long and still be bitter. You can serve here on the teams every week. You can serve one another and still be prideful. You can post scriptures. We love doing that, posting a scripture of the day. And yet, we can still be toxic. Come on. I love that sometimes I scroll on Instagram and it's like God first, but then somebody got their booty out in the post talking about it. Come on. Jesus is not impressed with leaves. Listen, good soil produces consistent fruit. Consistent good fruit. And back to what Pastor Rod talked about gardening, I think it was in week two. The seed is good, he said. It is.

The seed is good. The problem is never the seed. It's never the seed. If there's no fruit, sometimes we don't need to question God. We need to question what soil we're in. Where are we planting ourselves? Where are we feeding ourselves? Matthew 13, Jesus said, good soil produces 30, 60, and 100 fold. You know what that means? That means fruitfulness is measured. Not by numbers, but by transformation. Are you more patient than last year? Come on, this is where we got to measure. Have we changed from last year? Are we more loving than last year? Come on, are we more disciplined? I'm preaching to myself. I wrote this, and I was like, Lord, should I say this? Because I'm dealing with this. Can I be transparent? Are we more disciplined than we were last year? Are we more surrendered than we were last year? were last year. Surrender to God and what he is wanting to do and move in our lives. Because if you're planted, see some of us we've been planted for years, but still reacting the same. Still acting the same way. Something is wrong with the soil you're planted in. Here's a point I want you to remember. Fruit is proof you're rooted. Either good or bad. Your fruit could be rotting. Your fruit could be rancid. You need to check your soil. How many times we heard about some big pharma company that has a chemical company that allowed their waste into the soil and ruined all the crops. Maybe you need to check what is toxic

in your soil. Listen, we read in Psalms 1 that being planted by the stream of water, it yields fruit in season. Listen, this is not hype. This is not a moment. This is not emotional highs, but consistent fruit. Consistent fruit is not easy, y'all. If you live some life and especially if you live some life with your posture towards Jesus, you'll realize that consistent fruit is not easy. It requires some cutting. Some of us want the blessings of being planted without the responsibility of being pruned. You know, I said this story before. I was a kid and my bus would drop me off at my grandmother's house. To go to that particular school, we had to use my grandmother's address. My grandmother had these wine grapes. They were so sweet. I loved wine grapes. They were just incredible. She had this vineyard kind of thing in the front. I've seen my grandmother come through and cut some of these vines and the leaves. I've seen her do it, but I'm a kid. I was out there playing Power Rangers. Either that or Black Batman. I would show up to the scene. I'm like, I'm Black Batman. Don't mess with me. I'm angry. But I got a stick and I just kind of started, because I've seen her cut all this stuff off, so I'm just in here hitting on this grape vine, destroying it, not knowing. I've seen her cut on it, but she understood the expertise of where to cut, how to cut. And me, I'm just being sporadic and just destroying it, not even knowing. Listen, we have got to be pruned. John 15 says, God cuts what doesn't produce. Not to hurt you, but to make you fruitful. If it's not producing fruit, God will cut it. That's what we find out in John 15. Pruning is not punishment. It's precision. God doesn't cut randomly. He cuts strategically. Everything that drains life from you, He's going to cut it. Everything that distracts you from the purpose He has called you to, He's going to cut it. Come on, everything that blocks fruit, He's going to cut it. I'm hearing the rap song, cut it, cut it, cut it. Your price is way too high. You need to cut it. You all be driving by the gas station like, oh, your price is way too high. Let me go to the next one. He is going to cut it. Let me be clear with you guys. I don't want to be ethereal. I know sometimes when I get up here because we're talking to a wide, vast amount of people, we kind of talk ethereal about situations and what God is going to cut, but I want to be clear. So let me give you a moment of point of clarity in what God will cut. God will prune wrong mindsets. Listen, He will prune performance mindset. I have to earn God's love or I have to be accepted by others. He will cut that off. This kills

fruit because it creates pressure instead of peace. You're trying so hard to get the approval of God, His love or the approval of others. And it's causing you pressure, not peace. It produces striving instead of abiding. We need to abide in the presence of God. And every time that we're trying so hard, we're trying so hard. He's saying, be still and know that I am God. How many times are you still, or are you still worried and full of anxiety? it produces striving instead of abiding. Here's the truth. You don't perform for fruits. You remain for fruits. That's what we find in Psalms 1, planted by the streams of water. I'm not moved. I'm not shaken. I'm planted in the house of the Lord. I'm planted in his word. I'm planted in his presence. I'm not moving. Here's another point to remember. God will prune wrong mindsets. The victim mindset. Ooh, I'm on your feet now. This is just how I am, is what people say when they're a victim. Because of what I've been through. It's just how I am. Listen, hear me out. I know your pain is real. I have this saying, my team, everybody's much is much. When you're ministering to people, you gotta stand there like, oh my God, the world is falling apart. But I get it. If you've been through some stuff that Pastor Rob and Sarah have been through, sometimes they look at you like, girl, it ain't that much. We've been through hell and back, and what you're going through ain't even down the street. Don't we do that as pastors and counselors? We're kind of like, but everybody's much is much. So I don't want to belittle maybe the pain that you're going through or that you've been or suffered. I don't want to spoil freedom. I'm gonna do it anyways. There is a segment in freedom. Man, Pastor Rob leads it every year. He tells the depth of his story. I know some of you heard a lot of his testimony with the depth of the abuse that he went through in his story. And it's incredible. He takes forever to preach it, but it's so good, y'all. It took all of our time in freedom, but it was so good. Every moment was good. When he don't got a clock, he gonna go. That's why I got that clock. But we get to a moment where there's a man that stands up and asks for forgiveness for the man that hurts you, the husband that hurts you, the father that hurts you. There's a woman that stands up and asks for your forgiveness for the mother that did you wrong, the mother that bandage you or the sister that did you wrong. And we've done this hundreds of times through freedom. And it's a moment that I've got to always stand up. I've got to always stand up. Didn't I stand up, Chloe? Yes, I was. I stood up and I'm like, here we go. Because I believe in that moment. Some of us in here, your pain is real. And you have been waiting for that person to do you wrong, that did you wrong to say sorry, to have some level of remorse. But here's the reality. Most of us are never going to get that. That's the reality. When you're waiting on that friend that did you wrong 20 years ago, they live in a life, they best life and you over here still hurt. That's why I love that moment. Because sometimes, yes, we just need to hear I'm sorry. Supernaturally, we just need to hear I'm sorry, so that we can move on. But here's what I want to say. But if you stay there in that pain, if you stay there, it becomes your prison. God's pruning us. He's starting to prune excuses off of us. His pruning starts to cut blame. Here's something I want you to hear. Our identity tied to our trauma cutting. Because some of us, we are so tied to the drama of our life. If we get free, we don't even know what we're going to feel. Because the trauma in our life, the hurt in our life means I feel something. And so I keep circling back around to it because it gives me a feeling and freedom. I don't know. It's uncertain what freedom is going to feel like. So it's hard for me to walk in that direction. It's hard for me to move in that direction. But here today, I'm telling you, God is pruning our ties to our trauma. It is not your identity. It's not who you are.

It's not who you are. I was just having a conversation with somebody yesterday. And they're an adult. They are grown. And there is going to be a moment in our lives that fruit is going to require responsibility. It's going to require that I'm not going to get that apology. I'm not going to get that what I'm looking for. So in my own, I have to be able to seek God to get the strength. strength to overcome. Here's the other point I gotta make. God will prune wrong mindsets. The comparison mindset, where we ask why them and not me. Listen, it was good when I wrote it. Let me say this. Comparison will choke out your fruit faster than sin sometimes. Here's what I've realized. My young people, teenagers, young adults, college age in the room, you grew up with a smartphone and social media. Your whole world is designed to tell you what you are not. And if there is a weapon of the enemy, it is comparison. If I talk to so many Gen Z kids and the battle of the mind is so strong, the enemy is winning this fight in this generation. I'm here to strengthen you today. God has something for you. Stop living your life in the mirror of social media and something else that somebody else has, the way their body looks, the way their beauty is. Comparison will choke the fruit faster than sin sometimes because it distracts you from your assignment. It makes you bitter towards others. Come on. This generation loves to talk crap about everybody else. It loves to be critical of everybody else, but not critical of themselves. The adjustments that they need to make. I always say, Hey, listen, you pointing at somebody else, but you've got three fingers pointing right back at you. So now I just be nubbing at people like, listen, comparison. It blinds you from your own growth. It blinds you from your own growth. God's going to cut that. God will prune unhealthy actions. Habits that keep you spiritually dry. If you want fruit in your life, listen, you're on your inconsistent time with God. It's not going to work. You're wondering, man, why is my life not flourishing? Why am I not feel like I'm not getting closer to God? Well, you're inconsistent with time with the Holy Spirit. You're inconsistent in prayer. You're inconsistent in worship. Here's another thing because it said it in Psalms one, you're inconsistent in meditating on the way. I know when we say meditating, some of us always think of like some type of Eastern type of religion and so forth. What it means to meditate on the way is as we read the word, sometimes you got to close the book. I'm not praying. I'm not seeking God. Lord, I'm listening. Sit in it. I know some of us, we don't like to sit that long. I know some of us, we don't like that much silence. You ever go to the bathroom and forget your phone?

This tells you, y'all don't like to sit in silence. That's what tells you. It happens to me all the time. I'll be on there like, oh, I forgot my phone, but I already started. But y'all, y'all laugh cause y'all, y'all done it too. It's like, and then you start reading the bottle, the labels on the bottles. Like, no way. I say that. And it's, it is funny, but we don't like to just sit. He calls us to meditate on his way day and night. But I don't, if I asked you, when was the last time you meditated on God? Meditated on his word? You were just still before the Lord and his presence. When was the last time? And if you're honest with yourself, you probably like, I'm not really sure the last time that I spent 30 minutes back in black church. You call it tearing with the Lord, tearing in the spirit, just sitting in the presence. When was the last time you want fruit? You got to keep consistent with God. Habits that keep you from, to be sure. Sorry. Spiritually dry is feeding on everything, but the word feeding on everything, but the word I, I was watching, uh, uh, this year is apple, the company, their 50th anniversary. And I was watching one of the executives kind of talk about where the company has come from Steve Jobs to Tim Cook, and now Tim Cook has passed on the CEO to someone else and he's kind of retiring. And it was like Today Show. They asked them about the iPhone. You know, I was in college when the iPhone came out, 2007. I was a young man. Very young. Yeah, but I was a child genius. Don't worry about my age. But I remember being with my nerd friends. You know, I was like the black kid with a whole bunch of white kids, like, oh my gosh, here we go, we're nerding out for this, what is gonna be, I think, what we knew was gonna be a phone, but we had no idea what it looked like. Before that, a smartphone had a little keyboard, like your Blackberry. You remember a Blackberry? Yeah, yeah.

We knew it wasn't gonna have something conventional like that, and I remember Steve Jobs coming up, we watched this live. Steve Jobs came up and he said, what if it had an internet browser and a messenger and it was a phone? And we were like, oh my goodness, oh my goodness. And he says, I wanna present to you the iPhone. And we all lost it. Like, oh my gosh! As I was watching this interview, he talked about that moment. I remember that moment. Like, oh my gosh, this is so amazing. This is the greatest invention of humankind. But then the anchor asked him, he says, but what do you feel about the powerful negative things this thing introduced into society? And he says, yeah, it feels like we created the atomic bomb all over again. Ooh, that's, it's hard to understand how much this device controls us, distracts us, how much this device pulls us away from our creator because it distracts us. And the question I'm asking you, the habits that God is cutting because you're spiritually dry is because you're feeding on everything but the word of God. This may be the thing you may need to sit down,

put in another room so that you can get alone with God so your fruit can grow. Yes! Habits that keep you spiritually dry, living reactive instead of intentional. Listen, you can't binge on the world all week and expect fruit on Sunday. Come on, that lifestyle, God is gonna cut it. Listen, secret sin patterns. Stay with me, don't go nowhere. Let's just be real. Lust, come on, I talked about this device. This device made it easier to access porn, men. Let's not understand that this is one of our biggest rivals when it comes to be holy before God, pure before the Lord. Come on, he is cutting those things. Dishonesty, come on, this is one I deal with. Pride, come on, men, your pride is choking out your fruit. Be humble before the Lord, allow him to exalt you. Come on, compromise, young people, compromise. Compromising on your sexuality and your activity, who you're hanging out with is gonna choke your fruit. God is trying to cut it. Fruit and hidden sin cannot coexist long time. You may think, well, I've been doing this for a year, you may think, well, I've been doing okay so far, keep playing these games and get stupid prizes. One will kill the other. So God in his love, he starts cutting, not to expose you publicly.

Thank you, God. Come on, because if the world knew what you thought, what you did, what you did last night, come on. You'd be like, oh, I don't know if I could come in the church, I feel exposed. He's not trying to expose you publicly, but he wants to free you privately. God will prune toxic relationships. This one right here, y'all, I know we don't like, especially our young people. Not everyone in your life is assigned to your fruit. Not everyone in your life is assigned to your direction, your purpose, and where you're going. Some people, listen, you got friends in your life that normalize your dysfunction. You got friends in your life right now that normalize your dysfunction. girl, you know, we kind of like that. We kind of girl, you know, we, you know, when we drink, we be drinking, normalizing your dysfunction, keeping you in old patterns. Come on. You've got friends right now. You're thinking this right now. Friends that resist your growth. Yo, yo dog, I've been thinking I'm gonna get baptized in for what? I mean, I've been thinking I'm gonna go to this connect group and, and like, this is like, it's like a Bible study. Wow. Why would you do that? You got friends right now that are trying to pull you away from your growth. Listen, God will prune toxic relationships out of your life. He has purpose for you. You keep calling it loyalty, but God calls it limitations. Let him prune it. Some relationships just don't need better communication. They just need Holy distance. Now I want to be balanced here. This is not arrogance. This is alignment. Because if the relationship you have, they pull you away from God. They weaken your conviction or they feed your flesh. It will inevitably kill your fruit. God will prune distractions. Oh, I wish I had time for this. Listen, not everything's a sin. I'm gonna give you a little bit of

relief on this. Not everything's a sin. Not everything on your phone. You're like, I gotta throw this thing away. Throw it in the water. Come on. Let's be pragmatic, right? Not everything's a sin. But some things are just too much. Come on. We're like this being overcommitted. Being consistently busy. I have this phrase, you doing the most. Some of us, we are just too busy for the things of God. You're doing many good things, but it's not God things. And I want to tell you, some of you aren't unfruitful because you're bad. I'm not here to condemn you or anything like that. You're not unfruitful because you're bad. You're unfruitful because you're too busy. You're doing everything else but the things of the Lord. God will start cutting opportunities. I've seen this in my own life. I've seen this in his word. When we get ourselves too busy and God is trying to get something good to you, he will cut off opportunities. He will cut access off. Come on. That client that you had that's been kind of paying you 60% of your income, he will cut that opportunity off to draw you back to him. Even things you prayed for, he'll cut it off because he's protecting your purpose. God will prune your need for control. This one hits deep because we love to control outcomes. And that's me. That's why I'm not in a relationship, because I can't control that. So I'm like, I'm supposed to be over here. Because we love to control outcomes. Oh, it was good when I typed it, y'all. We love to control timelines. If you've ever been hurt in life, this is probably you. Because you don't want to get hurt again because you have a bruise wherever that pain is. What we love to do is isolate. What we love to do is, I don't do people. I just be over here. Oh, that connect group. I got to share. No, I'm not going to be in it. Freedom? They got to pray over me? No, I'm going to be over here. Because I can control this. We love to even control how God moves. Listen how you pray. You pray, God, I need this to happen. When was the last time you prayed, his will be done, his kingdom come. And Lord, whatever you bring my way, I'm good with it. Have you prayed that prayer? No, because it's dangerous. That's a dangerous prayer. Oh, that's a dangerous one. Because the uncertainty of what God will bring in your life, maybe it's going to bring some pain with the cutting. And that uncertainty, I can't deal with that. I got to control what I can control. But control is the enemy of surrender. God is calling us to surrender. You can't be deeply rooted in God

and deeply controlling at the same time. So God will allow, hear me out, God will allow delays. We find this with the Israelites. It could have been a week's travel to get to the promised land, but it took them 40 years. God will allow delays. He will allow uncertainty, situations you can't fix, not to frustrate you, here's the hope, it's not to frustrate you, but to prune your dependency on yourself. He's calling you to Him. In Psalms 1, it says, "'Blessed is the one who does not walk in steps with the wicked, but who delights in the law, the way of the Lord, and who meditates on it day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yield its fruit in season, and whatever they do.'" Here's a promise. This is a promise. We talk about promises all the time. When I'm up here in worship, this is a promise of the Lord. The promises are yes and amen, and whatever they do, where they're planted, they will prosper.

Notice what Psalm does not say. It does not say the tree that visits the water, a tree that occasionally stops by. It says a tree that is planted, rooted, is your anchor down. And because it's rooted, fruit becomes inevitable. I'm done. Let's stand on our feet. It was good. I need to get the tape. I said, I need to get the tape. If we are honest, some of us in this room, we've gotten really good at looking like we're planted, but we're not positioned by the stream. We know how to show up. Thank you, David. We know how to show up. We know how to lift our hands, and we know how to be around the environment of good soil. When Psalm 1 says, fruit doesn't come from a proximity. It comes from being planted. And that's why some of us, we've been in church for years, but we're still easily offended. We're still inconsistent. We're still spiritually dry. We're acting instead of reflecting on Jesus.

Because we're near the water, but we're not rooted in it. And here's what God does to a tree that's planted. He prunes it. Because according to Psalms 1, the tree is planted by the streams, but it still has to yield fruit in season. In season, he's got to cut, he's got to prune so that the fruit can come. You may have been waiting for fruit. You may have been waiting for God to transform and things to flourish in your life, but you got to go through the pruning first. You got to go through the cutting first. Listen, being planted does not remove the process. It guarantees the outcome. So today, God is not asking you to just come to church and go to church. He's asking you, are you planted in me? Are you planted in my word? Are you planted in my presence? Are you planted with my people? And here's what I want to say. If you're in this room and you are saying, God, I don't just want to visit the water. I want to be planted. I'm tired of being inconsistent. I want to be rooted. I want my life to actually produce fruit. I want to pray for you today. Before I do that, if you're in the room today

and you've never made Jesus your Lord and Savior, we did baptism and that's one of the things I ask him is, hey, have you made Jesus your Lord and Savior? And if you say, I don't think I've ever made that acknowledgement. Well, here's the moment in time. And if everybody in the room, again, bow your heads, close your eyes. It's just you and God. If in your heart, you're saying, you know what? I do need to posture myself towards. the Savior, and you've never said that prayer. You never said, God, I make you Lord and Savior of my life. Here's the opportunity, you can do that right now. Come on, it's just you and God. The Lord hears you, the Lord hears you. God, I thank you for your people, Lord. I thank you, Lord God, that they're here to be able to be planted and rooted in you, Lord God. So God, as they make this decision, Lord God, to say yes to you, to be planted by the streams of water, Lord God, God, let our roots go deep, Lord. But God, help us in the pruning season. Cut off the things that choke out our fruit, Lord God. Cut off the things that are not like you. God, we're postured towards you in this moment. Let this not be a height or a high or a moment, but God, let this be a lifestyle in Jesus' mighty name. Amen, amen. Prayer partners, come up.

Don't move, don't move, don't move, everybody. Don't move, don't move, don't move, don't move. Really quick, really quick. Look at me before we go. Really quick, don't move. Psalms 1 says that the tree meditates. I really want us to get here. Meditates day and night. If you wanna be planted, hey, how about start tomorrow? Open up your Bible tomorrow. Start in the gospel, start with Matthew. Start with Luke. Read the word. See what the Lord says. Meditate, try it, try it. You ain't never tried it before? Try it. Maybe go to the bathroom without your phone and go with just your Bible. It's a good time to go meditate. Try it tomorrow. Try it tonight. Get in community. If you're not in community, we're gonna be starting summer connect groups next month. It'd be a great time because we're talking about growth. All our summer connect groups. So get in community. Get to know somebody here. Stay consistent even when it's hard.

Keep coming to Sunday because our role is to feed you the word of God, to correct, to be able to edify you and elevate you. Be consistent even when it's hard.
