Pastor Doug Reed | The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit
Spiritual maturity isn’t about doing more—it’s about surrendering more.
The Holy Spirit isn’t just a power we can use; He is a person we can know. He comforts us, convicts us, guides us, and transforms us to become more like Jesus.
Stop striving in your own strength and start living surrendered to His Spirit!

♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ You are a restore, so God, we just pray that you would restore hearts today, that you would restore our spirits back to your spirit, God, and that you would communicate spirit to spirit today, Lord, that lives would be surrendered back to you today, God. Lord, we are just thankful for all that you're doing, Lord, we pray that you would cultivate the soil of our hearts, the sworn in, that a seed would be planted, God, but not just planted, but that it would take root, and that it would bring forth the harvest and many families today, God, we just thank you in Jesus name. Amen, come on, can we give a shout of praise to the Lord, this morning. Hey, before you find a seat, turn to one of your neighbors, give them a high five or a fist bump, say, hey, it is so good to see you today, amen. Now turn to your second choice and say, hey, it's good to see you too. Amen, spiritual high fives right now to whoever said my name. Amen. I felt like I was doing like the whoop whoop, you know, I'm just so thankful for everything that the Lord is doing right now, amen. How many of us are excited for church? Amen, there's, you know, as I was just thinking this morning and preparing, if I can find my notes here, I was just thinking, and, you know, I had this thought of faithful then and faithful now. Because as we're coming into today, today is our last service in this building that we will ever have again. And, you know, I've just thought of all of the stories up into this point. There's a lot of stories that many don't know, and many may never know, and then some that some may know, and, you know, but we came into this building with about 75 people. And now, today, just what God has done over the course of about eight years being here, in a place that many said that it wouldn't be able to happen, but God's faithfulness has just sewn true time after time after time. Because, you know, one of the things that, you know, many people said, even in church planting organizations, they said, well, it's going to be hard to plant a church in that area because there's no money there. And I looked at them and I said, well, good thing we're not planting a church for money. Hey, man, we're planting a church for people. And I just feel like when you go where the people that God has called you to go to, there's something that happens there. And I just believe that even though we're going to a bigger building on more property, with what appears to be nicer things, the heart of who we are must never change. And we always must stay centered on reaching broken people. And, you know, one of the things I found is that broken people come in every genre, shape, size, color. It doesn't matter. They're all broke. We're all jacked up.
Amen. And one of the passages that I was kind of reminded of was in 1 Samuel 7, verse 12. And it says, Samuel took a large stone and placed it between two towns. And he named it Ebenezer, which means the stone of hell. For he said, up until this point, the Lord has helped us. And so today, even though it's a special day for us, this may be the last Sunday that we gather in this building, but before stepping into the next chapter of what God calls us to do, I think we should look around the room and just see and remember the faithful. every growth track room associates with a life that has been impacted with the grace of God. The fellowship hall is marked by missions teams and outreaches that have happened in families lives. And we have a missions pastor because of some of that stuff today. Amen. I mean, just the things that God has done, we can't forget and all of the lives that we've seen. And in 1 Samuel 7, after God gave Israel victory over their enemies, he took a stone, Samuel took a stone and called it Evan Ezra, meaning the stone of hell. And this was a place that he was essentially declaring, hey, we didn't get her on our own. God brought us this far. And we need to remember that. We're not leaving one place because God has finished. We're going somewhere else because God is still moving. Amen. And getting to be a part. And so as we prepare to give this morning, I want us to not give out of obligation. I want us to give out a gratitude. To give out of everything that God is still doing. And even though we've done build 900 matching funds and we've raised that and all that, guess what? There is still work to do. There's still work to do in the kingdom. There's still work to be done. So as we have some ushers come forward, could we just pray this morning and just say, God, prepare my heart for whatever it is. Prepare my heart to give in the capacity that you have wanted me to give in God. Because I don't want to ever hold back what it is that you have called me to give. And God, if I can remember a life that has been impacted because of my giving, then God, let me give more. Let me give bigger. And let me keep giving God until you tell me to stop, which I know will never happen. Because one thing I've learned is we can't out give you God. And so Lord today is we prepare our hearts to give. And we prepare our hearts to move. Would you just continually bring to our remembrance your faithfulness and all that you have done for us in Jesus name. How many of us are excited for the mission strip? It's going to be our biggest mission strip yet, Pastor Doug. We're just believing that we have lots and lots of people sign up to go. I believe that it's just a great moment for discipleship. Well, hey, today is a monumental day for us because we do get to move directly after service. And we also get to just fellowship and put everything together, tear everything down, put it all back together. That sounds like a wonderful time. So I know all of you guys are excited for that. Hey, man, we have lunch. We have lunch for you. We have you hauls to pack and you're like, why on Sunday? Because it's Chiefs by week, baby. Amen. It just happened to work out that way. You can't tell me that's not God's timing. Amen. So. anyways, but hey, we're just so excited for what God is doing. I'm excited for the word today. You know, one of the things that another thing that is God's timing is just how this all worked out, because if you've been around reach for a while, you have got to know some of the people that are probably dearest in ministry to my wife and I. And now it extends beyond ministry, because even if we didn't have this church, we would have this relationship. And Pastor Doug and his wife, Jeannie, are just wonderful friends and like family to us. And so they are the founders of Partnership International, which is the missions organization that we partner with. And we do all of our trips with we support monthly, but they are more than just
friends. They are family. And I promise you, you are in for a treat today. As we've been going to the book of Acts, we've got to hear all about the Holy Spirit and some of the stuff that He does. And you are going to get a word today that is just monumental in our church on the teaching of the Holy Spirit. Did we welcome a good dear friend of mine, Pastor Doug, this morning? Come on. Hey, let's give it up for our pastor. Since you love Pastor Adam and Catherine and the whole team here, it's just amazing what God is doing. Well, what a great privilege it is for Jeannie and I. This is my beautiful wife, Jeannie, everybody give it up for her on the front row. What a privilege it is to be here on such a monumental Sunday. And there's so many memories that we have on this building. I think I think I still have scars on my knees from all the carpet I laid in this building. Gosh, the balcony at one point was not open. And our teams did all that work at HVAC, the upstairs, the parking lot, my goodness. I mean, you know, whoever bought this is getting a lot of love, you know, they really, they really are. And then I told Pastor Adam and said, we just got done with this one and you buy another one. What's up with that? What's up with that? You know, but, but it's incredible. It's incredible what God has done. And we have outgrown this place. And so, it's exciting to be a part of that. And it's been our great honor to partner with you guys. It's one of my favorite places on earth. It's actually been about six months since I've been here. Jeannie led all the teams this summer. And it's just our schedule has been crazy, but excited to preach the word today. Everybody ready for the word? Amen. Well, I'm going to dive in and you can get to know me those who that don't through the word today. I want to talk to you about the person and work of the Holy Spirit. You know, I've known for months that I was going to teach on this topic today. And, and to be honest with you, I feel so inadequate because how many of you know the Holy Spirit is a bigger subject than we can deal with in one Sunday. We could, we could do years worth of sermons and there's been books written on him and not cover this topic. But I feel inadequate to preach on him even though he is my very best friend. And, and for some of you, this is going to be graduation day. You're going to move from, you know, self effort to the power of the Spirit. Some of you are going to move from the shallow waters of religion today to the deep waters, the ocean of the Spirit today. We know that in the Old Testament, the Spirit of God would come on people. That's why they would pour oil over them. We're going to do that later. Amen. Come on. They would pour when they anointed David, they poured a jug of oil because it's the Spirit of God. We'd come on them. But in the New Testament, we know first John two other verses tell us that the Spirit of God
is inside of us. Everybody say he's inside of me. We know that without the Holy Spirit, Christianity is dry. It is powerless. How many of you come here not because Adam is so good looking even though he is. But you come here because the Spirit of God is moving in this place. Amen. And that's, that's what we want. We want the Spirit. Jim Simba, the great pastor of Brooklyn Tabernacle, he said this. He said the most mature Christian is not the one who necessarily serves praise or even reads the word the most. Dear ones, the most mature among us is the one who is most dominated by the Holy Spirit. This reminds me of a moment in the Bible where somebody who was a very religious person, it would be like the guy that everybody would say, I hope he goes to my church. He had an encounter with Jesus. He was a Pharisee. He was a prominent Mayan and yet he came to Jesus in the middle of the night and he said, "Hey, I don't know if I'm going to heaven, much must I do to be saved. And he excelled at works, but he lacked the Holy Spirit. And Jesus replied, "John 3-5, it'll be on the screen." He said, "I assure you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and of the Spirit." Everybody say the Spirit. - Spirit. - Humans reproduce human life, but only the Holy Spirit produces spiritual life. The wind, he compares the Holy Spirit to the wind, blows wherever it pleases. You can hear it sound, but you cannot tell where it's coming or going. So it is, everybody say, "So it is." With everyone born of the Spirit. So Jesus tells us that the Holy Spirit is like the wind. He is this unseen force. You might be good, but you cannot predict. The wind.
Nicodemus had what I call rowboat religion. I had Pastor Adam pick this up for me, and I can't imagine trying to row my way through life. I can't imagine if I was called to go around the world to try to row my way when there's this unseen force called the wind, amen, that could take me without personal effort. There are some of you here today that today, not only is graduation day, it's the day you give Jesus your paddle. You're no longer going to be a person after this message that goes after Christianity through self-effort, but you're going to be somebody that approaches the Holy Spirit and says, "You are the power, amen." How many of you know, I don't want the paddle, I want the power, amen? I want the power of the Holy Spirit. You know, I was at home a few years ago. This is quite a while ago, and there's two men knocked on my door. They both had on ties, suits and ties. I mean, you know what I'm talking about? They were Jehovah's Witnesses, and anyway, I said to them, I was really nice. I said, "Hey, dude, you knocked on the wrong door today." I mean, I'm a minister of the gospel, and I said, "You won't make any headway with me." And they asked me to take their literature, and I said, "Well, I have some as well," and they wouldn't take mine, so I wouldn't take theirs. They meant it, and so finally, I said to the guy,
there's always like the older, more experienced guy, and there's like the newbie, the trainee, and I said to the guy that was more experienced, I said, "Hey, you've worked really hard, right, "to get to where you are at, "to earn your way into that heaven realm," or whatever, and he said, "Oh yeah," and he told me about all the religious work that he had done, and I looked at him and I said, "Well, that's the difference between me and you. "Can I tell you, you're trying to die for God, "but my God died for me, amen?" (audience cheering) I said, "Look, it's not about effort, "it's about the grace of God." I handed him my paddling, man, a long time ago, you're trying to row your way to heaven, and you're never gonna, it's only the spirit of God, amen? The younger one started hyperventilating, we had a little moment right there. (audience laughing) See, religion can teach you about God, but how many of you know only the Holy Spirit can help you to know God, amen? John 663, it is the spirit who gives lie, the flesh is no help at all. So if you are saved today, if you are a Christian, then it is only because of the work of the Holy Spirit. I love that Jesus compared him to the wind,
because you can't really explain the wind, amen? We know that the wind can come in like a Midwest tornado or a Jamaica hurricane, I have experienced both, and the wind can also be a gentle calm breeze on a cool day. The wind we know is our friend. If you've ever flown, if you come with me to Africa or something, they will take advantage of something called the jet stream, amen? You'll get there much, much faster because of the wind. We know the wind is oblivious to obstacles. It doesn't care. It's never lacking, it's never sick, it's never tired. That's what the Holy Spirit is like. I only want the wind. Everybody turn your neighbor and say, I only want the wind, amen? I never want to go against his power. I want to flow with his power. So who is the Holy Spirit? And again, this is too big of a subject for one day, but let's take a shot at it. You know, the Holy Spirit, we know that he is not just a manifestation of God that he is God, amen? And now, if you don't believe in some doctrine called the Trinity, some people will say, well, that word's never mentioned in scripture, It is a very accurate doctrine of God.
That God is one God, amen? And yet, in a mysterious way, something that we cannot understand, He represents Himself in three persons. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. If you don't believe that, I don't know what you do with the baptism of Jesus. He's in the water, the Father speaks from heaven, the Spirit comes down like a dove, amen? He is three and He is one. And you can use the agalistration and say that, you know, He's one, yet there's three. You can use the water illustration and say, He's vapor and ice and liquid and salt, whatever it is. How many of them are adequate, amen? It is a mystery of God. Now, you don't have to go very far in Scripture to find the Holy Spirit. Genesis chapter one, verse two. The Spirit is hovering over the waters. You can study that out and you'll find out that God actually created the earth through His Spirit. DL Moody said it like this. He said, the Holy Spirit is God at work. So if you have ever had any anointing for ministry, if you've experienced the grace of God, the forgiveness of God, the empowerment of God, peace, direction, joy, all of it, how many of you know, it's all the Holy Spirit, amen? Now, certainly God uses your personality and mind,
no matter how weird they are, amen? And some of you just have the corner on that market and I'm right there with you, but it is only the Holy Spirit that gives something of value, amen? I'm on the road about 150 days a year. And so every now and then from my hotel room, I order a pizza, how many of you like a good pizza? Come on, baby. And I'm not prejudiced, give me Chicago saying that, whatever, if it's good, it's good, come on. Now, I have never had the box show up and the guys say, here's your pizza box, 'cause I mean, I don't care about the box, I care about the pizza. You know what we are? We're like that pizza box. The Bible calls us earth and vessels. And we are just the container. The Holy Spirit is the treasury, amen? He's the one that brings all value and all the truthfully, guys, listen, reach church, let's not even move if we don't have the Holy Spirit. Why? 'Cause he is the great treasure. Now, the Holy Spirit, he is not just a power we can use, but he is a person we can know. The Bible 96 times in scripture calls him the Holy Spirit. It tells us that he can be quench, he can be offended, he can be insulted, he can be green. Some of you are like, I don't understand
why I don't have more of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Well, listen, you can't live for the world and God at the same time and expect, the Bible says he yearns with jealousy for us, amen? He is a person we can know. Now, I wanna say as I tell you this story, that my wife is much more beautiful than the girl that I'm about to tell you about right now. Well, when I was in the fifth grade, it's probably where I fell in love with Alabama girls, 'cause Jeannie is from Alabama. And anyway, I was living in Illinois in this beautiful girl named Stacey moved to our junior high school. And I fell in love with her right away, that beautiful accent and everything else. But I was very shy, I think I kicked dirt on her once that was about it, that's how we did it as kids. And a couple years went by, and I went to the junior high school in my town. And as God would have it, the fate of heaven, she ended up in the same junior high school. Now, there was only one in our town, but still, that was God, amen. And that year, in 1970 something, they had something as a new hairstyle came out called the spiral perm. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Come on, man, these suckers were like 10, 12 inches long, they were very beautiful.
Stacey came to school that year with a spiral perm, and I fell even deeper in love with her. So I went to my good friend Ben, who also was in the seventh grade, but he knew everything there was to know about women. And so I went to Ben, and I said, Ben, I really love Stacey, I need to get with her. Would you tell me how to make that happen? And he said, well, Doug, you need to write her a note. And so, passed her out of my sat-down, and I crafted a piece of poetry that would rival the book of Psalms. It was pretty incredible. Some of you that are single, you might wanna write this down, 'cause this is really good, all right? So I sat down, and I wrote a note, and it went something like this. Dear Stacey, do you like me, and would you like to go with me? That's how we did it back in the day. We didn't have a car, so I don't know where we were going, but still. So we're gonna go together, that's how we did it. And then I came up with this myself. The first box was beautiful and big, it had hearts around it, it was the yes box. The second box was quite small, it was in the little corner. And there was like a microscopic no box on the back side of the note.
And of course Stacy read the note and she saw the goods and she checked the yes box, come on man. And we were going together. Now about three weeks later I went up to talk to her, I was kind of shy. And I said, "Hey Stacy, are we supposed to be going together?" And she said, "Yes." And I said, "All right, I'm going to walk you home from school and I'm working it, right?" And so I started walking her home and I knew that I should hold her hand but it looked kind of sweaty so I didn't do it. And then I got to her block and I knew that I should walk her, you know, all the way to her house. But it was like three, four blocks out of my way so I didn't do that. And then I knew that I should kiss her or something but I just said, "See ya." And I left. And the next day she wrote her own note to me and said, "I am breaking up with you." (audience laughing) I didn't even know what that meant but she missed it, amen. She missed it, she missed it. What was the problem? The problem was I wanted to go with her. I just didn't want to know her. Some of you, you want the power of the Holy Spirit but you don't want the purity of the Holy Spirit.
You want all the gifts and all that stuff but you just don't want to be, listen, until the Holy Spirit dominates your life, amen. You have not matured in your faith and you're still going to be lacking. There are some of us today that we are trying to get past, you know, addiction without the help of the Holy Spirit. It's like you're trying to row your way past your addiction and I just want to say, how is that going for you? Because you can't discipline your way out of sin, amen. It's only because of the Galatians 5.25 tells us the closer we get to the Holy Spirit, the more we will not gratify the lust of the flesh, amen. The Bible tells us where the spirit of God is, there is freedom. How many of you need freedom today? You know, all of us, we admire, you know, the amazing way that God uses past your Adam but I can just tell you, as a spiritual father to a spiritual son, I can just tell you, it is not because he is so freaking disciplined. No, it's because the Holy Spirit dominates his life, amen. What you need is the power of the spirit. God is no respecter of person. He will give you the spirit, amen. Now, for all of us today, we know this. We know the spirit of God is the distributor of the gifts and the church. The spirit of God is the one that calls people to preach. The spirit of God is the one that gifts people
with worship, amen. The spirit of God is the one that can reveal even dormant hidden gifts that you don't know you have, amen. Now, it's kind of strange church world today because, you know, representing in this room and I speak in different churches every weekend and I can tell you, on average, there's 50 to 75 different religious backgrounds in this room. Some of you come from a Catholic or Baptist or whatever tradition, you get what I'm saying? And you came in here, some of you met Christ for the first time because you had religion but you didn't have a relationship. But maybe you were taught that the Holy Spirit, he is a little bit to be feared and there's certain things he did in the church back in the book of Acts that he's not gonna do today. I'm not sure how you can lay God out like a smorgasbord and say, I'll take that, but I'll skip that. I'll take that, but that's not real. You get what I'm saying? How many of you know he's either real or he's not, amen. In fact, the Bible tells us in Acts 19, when Paul approached the church there, he said, listen, you're saved, you've got Jesus, but have you yet received the Spirit? You say, Pastor, what is he talking about? 'Cause we know that when you're saved, the Spirit of God comes inside of you.
He's talking about something called the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Now, over and over in the book of Acts, we see when people wear baptized in the Spirit that they spoke in another tongue. You say, God, why would God do something like that? Well, because your tongue is the most unruly part of your body, amen? The Bible even tells us that if you can control the tongue, you will be perfect in every way. How many of you have trouble controlling the tongue, amen? So what is God do? He says, submit to me the most unruly part of your body, and I will give you a heavenly language. I will give you an overflow of power that is so incredible. And I don't know why anybody would not want it. As I came out to preach this morning, I sat in the back during worship, praying in the Spirit the entire time, 'cause I know it edifies me, amen? It fills me up, and not only that, I'm praying the perfect will of God. I'm praying for some of you, and I don't even know your name because the Spirit of God knows your name, amen? Why would you not want that? I came to Christ radically saved. And about four months later, I was sitting at youth rowing, a guy preached a message on the baptismal spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues.
And he did this whole thing. And I don't think he did a good job 'cause at the end, I did not understand what he talked about. But he said this. He said, "Hey, if you're here today "and you've never received the baptismal spirit, "then you need to come down front." And in my young Christian mind, I just thought, well, you know, I've been saved. I was baptized in water. And I was like, I don't think I have that one. And so I walked down front. Nobody walked up and prayed for me. Nobody said, you know, say see my Honda three times fast. Nobody said that. (congregation laughs) I just walked down front, lifted my hands, and immediately began to pray in an unknown tongue. The spirit of God just came on me. And in fact, about five months later, I was in a prayer meeting. The pastor said, if you've got the baptismal spirit, you should pray into it. And I was like, I didn't know we were supposed to do it more than once. And then I just started, you know, praying like crazy. And now it's a regular part of my Christian experience. We were on a mission trip years ago to Venezuela. I don't want to take too much time here,
but there's a little girl. She kind of broke away from the group she wasn't supposed to. Took us a while to find her. And when we found her, there was a young man on his knees. She only spoke English, he only spoke Spanish. And in perfect Spanish, she is leading him to Christ. As the spirit of God is speaking through her in a perfect Spanish language. Amen. You say, come on Pastor Doug, he only did it at the birth of the church. I'm telling you, I saw it long after the birth of the church, amen. Some of you know who Billy Graham is. He's a Baptist background. And they say he was preaching at one of our colleges a while back. And he only got 3.2. The young man stood up and gave a message in tongues. And another one interpreted it. And Billy walked back to the pulpit and said, that young man just preached the third point of my sermon. It's real, amen. Max Lucado, the great author who comes from a church of Christ background. He recently was filled with the Holy Spirit and said, I speak in tongues every single day. The more hungry you get for God, amen?
The more God gives out good gifts to his children. You want the baptism in the Holy Spirit. You know, there's an amazing moment in scripture where 12 men, the disciples of Jesus, they have had the greatest three years that any 12 men have ever had. They have spent three years in the physical presence of Christ. How many of you would give everything you have just for five minutes? Come on, man. I just tell you, you can have it all. Five minutes in the, three years. And then one day Jesus tells them this. This is verse seven of John 16. He said, I am telling you this the amplified Bible that nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable. The best translation is advantageous for you. It is to your advantage that I go away because if I do not go away, the comforter, that is the Holy Spirit, will not come to you, but if I go away, I'll send them to you to be with close fellowship with you. Now, if I'm sitting there in that moment, I'm gonna raise my hand. I'm gonna say, Jesus, how could it possibly be to my advantage? I mean, we got you right now. We can hug you. We can ask you questions.
Amen. How could it be to my advantage that you would go away? Well, one great theologian said it like this. Jesus took on a body, right? A human body like yours and mine. He said, when Jesus was on earth, the location of His divinity was limited to the location of His humanity. In other words, every time we see Jesus do something divine, He's physically present. Can you imagine if that's how God wanted to do it today? I mean, can you imagine if like, we had to somehow get our 30 seconds with Jesus sometime in our lifetime so that we could get saved? I don't know about you, but if he walked through the back door today, first off, church is over, baby, 'cause I got nothing left to say. Second thing I'll tell you is pastor Adam and I, we get to take him lunch. That's just the way it is. (congregation laughing) We wouldn't have to move. He'd probably do some kind of moving miracle, amen, and just make it all happen, transfer the stuff. But the truth is every church in the entire world would be jealous, right? Because we got him and nobody else did. No, listen, nobody loves me more than your pastor, okay? Pastor Adam and I were very close.
And when I come into town and I'll be like, I have to tell him I have to save Pastor Adam. I can't spend 20 hours a day with you, man. I mean, I got to eat, I got to sleep, you know? Come on, man, I got a family, you know? And why? Because I'm physical, but how many of you know the spirit of God in me is also in Ed, And it's actually God on the inside is actually better than God right beside. Amen? 24/7 He is with us. So I want you to get this, and I promise you, I know what time it is, come on, I do this for a living, come on, come on, I wanna share with you very quickly if you're taking notes, I promise you we'll hit our clock. But I wanna share what I call four major ministries. It won't be adequate, but we're gonna take a look at the Holy Spirit, four major ministries of the Holy Spirit, number one. He is our constant. There is a promise in scripture, and that is the promise that God will be present with us. Can I tell you the promise of scripture is not a lack of pain, not even a lack of danger. The promise of scripture is the promise of God's presence. How does he do that? He does that through his spirit, John 1416. I'll ask the Father, and he will send to you a helper. He goes on to say, he will dwell with you,
and he will be with you. In other words, we are promised the presence of God. Now, I can remember a graduation day for me as a Christian was I had experienced the presence of God in many times in church over the course of my first year. And then there was a moment when I said God, if you can meet me in church, you can meet me in my bedroom. There was only one space that I controlled, and it was a 10 by 10 bedroom. Somebody's watching today, there's only one space you control, and it's the little bed or cell or whatever you live in. I mean, you know, that can become your church, amen? And so I invited the presence of God into my bedroom, and he accepted, and he came. But I'll tell you something about God. He's a very invasive house guest. Have you ever noticed that? Like you invite him in, and he starts messing with all your stuff. He was like, I don't like that poster. Music's not very good, something you need to listen to, something better, you know right there. That Bible looks a little dusty right there. I mean, we should maybe, you know what I'm saying? He started messing with my stuff. I'm a very invasive house guest, by the way. I'm very quirky after thousands of days on the road. So if I come stay at your house, I don't want the bed that you wore out and put in the guest room, I want your bed. Come on, man.
Give it up, give it up. I am gonna raise your fridge, I want the remote, I want the good chair. And by the way, I want to find out what's in your bathroom cabinets, I just need to know. I just need to know how weird you really are. I'm kidding, sorta. But the spirit of God is that way. And what does he do? You've got this beautiful, convergent space of our souls and our lives where God says you are worthy not because of you, but because of what Jesus did of my presence, amen? Number two, not only is he our constant, but he is our comforter. Scripture directly calls God our comforter. Second Corinthians one tells us that he is the God of all comfort, and he comforts us so that we might comfort others. John 14, 27, greatest chapters ever written on the Holy Spirit, John 14 through 17. He said, "I am leaving you a gift, peace of mind and heart, "the peace I give you, the world cannot give, "so don't be troubled or afraid." There's so many other verses, Romans 8, 26, tells us the Holy Spirit meets us in our weaknesses, and he will pray with groans that cannot be uttered, another reason why you want to have the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He is our comforter.
I did a lot of trips this year like we do every year, and I don't know how long I can keep up the pace, but this year I think it's around 11 or so missions trips that we've done, and I personally have been on. And anyway, I was back in March, I was one in one in Jamaica at the orphanage that we work with, and it's really weird weather that week. Normally, your T-shirts and shorts that week, all week long, it was sweatshirts, it rained all every day, and by Thursday night, I had to get up very early Friday morning, I had to speak in Connecticut, but by Thursday night, I was in my room, and I got very sick. I had to get up at three o'clock in the morning to make a flight, but I was extremely sick. I had a fever, I was shivering, couldn't get enough blankets on me, and I don't want you to think I'm weird, but I was scared, I thought I was going to die, I literally did, I don't think my head was in the right place, and I put on some worship music, and the Spirit of God, all I can tell you, for about six hours, the Spirit of God just invaded my room, and I really believe I had an angelic visit that night, as the Spirit of God was my comforter. Some of us, man, we go to so many other things, I mean, you know, you can't get that out of a bottle, you can't get that out of a drug,
the Holy Spirit, He's so personal. Back, some of you have heard this story, but back last year, Father's Day weekend, 20, 25, my father passed away. I was getting on a plane to help. were closing the door of the plane and my mom says your dad has died and she kind of said I know you got a flight and she hangs up and I held it together until I got to Atlanta and I lost it and then I went on to Kansas City and I didn't know what I was going to do. And so I thought well I'll be renting a car, I'll be heading over to my mom and my mom called me as I went in Kansas City and she said son your dad said something very strange as he was dying he said he said I don't want a funeral he said he said I want you to wait until you die and then you have Doug do a funeral for both of us so already I know there's not going to be a funeral and then he said this to her he said you tell that son of mine he said I know how important his summers are and I did I had I had about almost sixty days of ministry planned and she said you tell or my dad said you tell that son of mine that if he cancels anything I'll be very upset with him. Now I don't know if he's planning on haunting me or are like like how you're dead like what are you going to do you know you know and so but it kind of scared me a little bit and then I'm like so I'm putting this weird situation if I honor my dad you know by not canceling anything and he doesn't understand really what that means. It means that next morning less than 24 hours after his death I'm walking into a pulpit. It means the next day I'm getting on a plane and going to Honduras means five days after that I'm getting on another plane you know what I'm saying and I didn't stop for like sixty days and all I can tell you is one God uses you more when you're broken. Amen. It's in your weakness and two he was my comfort number three the Holy Spirit and I promise you we're right on time come on the Holy Spirit he is our convictor John chapter 16 verse eight when he comes he will convince or convict the world of sin and the availability of God's goodness and the deliverance from judgment.
So if you are a Christian today it is because the Holy Spirit convicted you of your sin. How many of you know you can't get saved until you know you're a sinner amen and you're going to remain a sinner if you don't know that God is good he loves you and he wants to forgive you. Amen. So it's all a work of the Holy Spirit. Now conviction is this conviction is when the Holy Spirit convinces you of something. It can be sin the Holy Spirit can convince you of sin sometimes that's not very hard because you've seen the destruction of it. It can be something about God's goodness or character it can be a calling like like literally I just tell you like people ask me all the time like you excited to preach today I'm like well this is one of like 700 times it seems like this year and I'm like I am but it's more that I'm convicted about it you know what I'm saying. It's more that I'm like like if you canceled on me I wouldn't be super disappointed I'd like to just go grill something amen and it is bi-week so we can but but still it's more that it's deeper it's coming from deeper waters than that the Holy Spirit is convinced to me amen that the word of God changes lives and so it could be something of that's confusing like like how many of you know there wasn't pornography in Scripture but how many think the Holy Spirit might have something to say about it amen you say well in all this transgender crap and all this other stuff that we hear about that well we don't see a lot of that in the Bible but how many you think the Holy Spirit might be able to apply Scripture to that how many of you know we need the conviction of the Holy Spirit more than ever before and you know what this is this really it's a big theological to big theological words when you get saved there is justification which is just as if you've never said how many know that's instant that you're instantly saved a God instantly looks on you as righteous but then the other side of that coin is something called sanctification sanctification is the process of God it's the Holy Spirit going I ain't gonna leave you alone like like you're saved but you're a baby you're saved but you're not mature you're saved but you still got bad habits you get what I'm saying you know when I first came to Christ I began to grow very quickly and one of the reasons why I grew so quickly was I was so desperate
the other reason was I took on some really good advice and I'll give this to you if you're a new Christian listen my pastor I remember it was about a weekend I was listening to him and I was listening to every word he said I really wanted to know Jesus and and he said this he said he said listen if you're new to this thing if you want to grow up you better show up that's what he said I mean you know that's good advice amen you want to grow up I think it's better to even read your Bible and pray because I mean you know if you show up you'll learn how to read your Bible and pray amen so if you want to grow up you better show well I took him serious and I said all right I'm not missing anything I'm there every time doors are open well I didn't realize that commitment was Sunday morning church back then we had Sunday night church, then we had Monday night youth group and there was a group of women that they had a little Bible study on Thursday mornings, and I was so hungry for Jesus, I would go to the women's Bible study on Thursday morning. I am pretty sure I made a quilt if I'm not mistaken. I mean, it was incredible. And my mom was just like, I don't care if you skip school, like your wife is changing. She was just so happy that I was better, you know, that she would let me do it. I literally, there was about 20 women that prayed for me for many years 'cause I went to their Bible study on Thursday mornings. And so I started about three months in thinking, I am the man, you know, other people think this Christian thing is hard, but I'm just growing fast. And they started putting me in charge of Bible studies and things like that,
which I mean, you know, you shouldn't do that with a young Christian. So one day it was about three months in, I was in class and my gym teacher said, "Hey, we're gonna play this incredible game." Now this game was actually invented, it was actually invented by the devil himself. It was invented in the very corridors of hell. They play this in hell all the time. It is called Dodgeball, amen? (audience laughs) It's evil to the core. There's like, and so when I was very excited when he explained the game, I'd never played it before. And so I got out there and I was like, I am gonna win and I have my Dodgeball. And it wasn't five seconds into the game. I went back like this and a big fat Dodgeball hit me right in the face. And all of a sudden, out of me, three months in, super spiritual, comes a flurry of cuss words that would embarrass a sailor. I'm just telling you. It was like, why did it bling bling bling bling? I mean, I just went for it. And then I thought it was done and it just kept going. I went for like a minute, you know? And just, it was like I'd been saving up, you know, what I'm saying?
And it just all came out of me. And then I was like, my God, what just happened? And I look around in the class that I've been sharing Jesus with, just watched me do that. And so I slink off into the corner and I'm like, God, I am such a loser. And the Lord said to me, son, don't you know that I'm just getting started with you, amen? Now, I can tell you this. I can't remember the last time I've, I mean, the day is young, you never know, but I can't remember the last time I've cussed, amen. But I can tell you this, the spirit of God has been maturing me. How are you gonna do that if you don't have a relationship with the Holy Spirit? Amen? And then finally, the last one, and we're right on time is he is our counselor. Spirit of God is how we access the wisdom of God. The Bible says this, John 14, 26, when the Father sends the advocate, the Holy Spirit, as my representative, he will teach you, everybody say he will teach me everything and remind you of everything I have told you. So the Holy Spirit is the goat of teachers, amen? He's the one that illuminates scripture. He's the one that illuminates sermons. Have you ever sat under one of Pastor Adam's sermons?
'Cause I have and thought, did you like follow me around last week? You know what I'm saying? Do you have like private detectives that follow people in and you get all that information and that's what you base your sermons on? Now, I will tell you, I'm on the inside track here at Reach Church. I am one of the big counselors here and I don't know, I think I have some kind of official position, I'm on the board or something. And so I just, I would tell you this that I shouldn't tell you this, but he actually does have private detectives. And no, I'm just kidding, I'm not sure, I mean, probably, probably, but I'm not sure. But how many of you know that this is not about him having insider information? It's about the Holy Spirit applying the scripture to you, amen? I have people walk up to me and tell me, I said stuff that I didn't even say. And they're not lying, they're just saying the Spirit of God is so personalized the word to them, amen? That it is, how many of you know the Holy Spirit knows what you need, amen? He is a teacher, and how does he do this? How does this play out? Well, he teaches us, he guides us, amen? You have a guide on the inside, his name is the Holy Spirit,
John 1613, when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide us, everything, he will guide me into all truth and he will show you the future. So what is the Holy Spirit? No, he knows everything, he knows past, present, and future, amen? See, I make decisions based off of the past and the present, but the Holy Spirit knows the future, amen? So, as we're being guided into a new season, how many of you know the Holy Spirit knows everything we don't know, amen? So you need the Holy Spirit, he's our God. But even more than that, he is our revealer. Let me say he's my revealer. I love this verse, it's probably my favorite two of all the books that Paul wrote. First Corinthians two, verse nine and 10. No eye has seen, no ear is heard, ever say revealed, these things by his, what? For his spirit searches out everything. He's the Google of God, amen? Way better than AI will ever be. The spirit of God searches everything, and he knows God's deep secrets. Paul goes on to say that the spirit of God knows the thoughts of God, he knows your thoughts, and the job of the Holy Spirit is to build a bridge between what God is thinking and what you're thinking, amen? I don't know about you, but I want to have the Holy Spirit. He is my reviewer. So, some of you right now, you don't understand the word, because the Holy Spirit hasn't eliminated before you. When you sit down and you read the scripture and it's dry and seems like it's powerless, say Holy Spirit, what are you trying to say? In my Bible reading plan right now, and my God, I cannot wait for it to finish, I am in the book of Job, and I'm right in the middle where all his friends are like dissing them and stuff like that, and I'm like God, what could you possibly say to me through this? You know, but how many of you know the spirit of God's got a way, amen? A way of applying it and revealing it. He's been speaking
to me about relationships and all kinds of other things through that scripture. The ways of God, how many of you know there's a way of God, amen? I have so wanted that in my life. God has a way of looking at your conflicts and your situations, your entire family line and all the bad history. You haven't lived out the ways of God. Only the Holy Spirit can teach you that, amen? Your gifts, your callings, relationships, places you're supposed to be. He wants you to know what he knows, amen? So, how do I know this? How do I know what God has? Well, I think there's two ways. I've already talked about one. You need a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. How do I know what God's called me to? Listen, I can give you advice. Pastor Adam can give you advice. Others can counsel you, but only the Holy Spirit can endorse your future, amen? So, you've got to know what does God have for me, and I promise you he wants to give that to you. How do you know something's yours? The Holy Spirit endorses it. You guys are going to believe with me, and I encourage you, man, if you've been waffling or whatever. How many of you know God will provide the money, amen? You know, it's funny. I just quick story. Years ago, I preached at a church in Virginia, and they had a mission trip plan, and nobody had signed up. And I said, "Well, give me a shot at it this morning." So, I preached about the trip and what God was going to do. And afterwards, there was a line of 25 people signing up for the trip. There's these two little girls who are standing, and they walked up and they were both physically shaking. They said, "We don't have any money. There's no way we can afford this. There's no way we can go." And I looked at him and I said, "Well, take a step of faith if you feel like God's in it." And they said, "What do you do?" I said, "Just sign the paper right here. Just say you're interested." It's not even signing up. You're just saying I'm interested. It's a little step of faith. I mean, you know God bless his faith. And I said, "You watch what God might do." The very next guy in line, who was not listening to our conversation, said to me, "Pastor Doug, I can't go, but I'd like to pay for two people to go." I literally, they were almost out the door and I called him and I said, "Come back. It usually doesn't work this quick." You know? And they came back. And literally, those two girls went on the trip and just had their lives changed. Amen? Well, Belize is a new partnership for us. And back in April, I did a big setup trip. It was quite expensive to do it, but I was like, "God, I got to know this is from you. If we're going to commit, you know our time, talent, so you know what goes into these partnerships." And anyway, I got off the plane. Jake was coming with me, one of my missionaries. And anyway, before Jake was coming out, I had
about 10 minutes on the sidewalk in front of the airport. And I'm just telling you the spirit of God met us on that sidewalk. And before we did all the discussions, before we saw all the scenery, before he showed me projects, I already knew that is mine. Amen? The spirit of God endorsed it. Another way you can know this, and I'm going to close right here. The other way you can know what is yours is when you don't have to fight for it. Amen? How many of you know in the kingdom of God, there are no ladders to climb. Amen? There's no manipulation needed when manipulation enters the room. The miracles leave. No. Now, there's no manipulation. You don't have to push somebody down so that you can go up. Amen? When it's yours, the spirit of God just gives it to you. So, I ask Pastor Adam to bring this because I forgot mine. This is his garage door opener, which is now my garage door opener. Amen. I can go to your house anytime I want, baby. And so, anyway, I have one of these at home. And you probably know this. Maybe you don't. Maybe you're not rich like I am, but I have this giant door on the front of my house and it's called my So when I pull into my driveway all I do I hope this doesn't have very good range because I'm gonna open your garage door right now When I pull into my garage my driveway, I just hit the button and the garage door magically lifts up and Everything that's mine. Amen. It's just waiting there for me Now something you may not know about me is I have OCD. I think it's one of my spiritual gifts. Come on I love it so much. I really did But but my garage is super organized. It's got all my tools my fishing equipment My all kinds of stuff in there and there's not one inch of garage space that I have not thought through and when I hit the button The celebration to my OCD begins amen as I walk in and all the stuff that nobody's there to fight me Amen, see if I go to your house and I hit the button how many you know nothing happens Maybe you'll come out with a gun or something, but other than that nothing happens Because what's mine is mine amen And can I tell you the spirit of God has some things for you? That you just cannot discover on your own How are you gonna know it if you don't know him? Bible says I would have you not be unaware. Amen of the spirit God I really believe that God wants you to know this today and so today you're aware. There's a person the Holy Spirit He's closer than a brother. Amen. He's our best friend and he wants to empower you for righteous living
Come on. Want you to stand your feet all throughout the house and nobody lead by the way last time I did this couple people left that makes me mad so stand up and Here's what we're gonna do how many of you would just say this out loud you'd say hey pastor Doug I need more of the Holy Spirit Anybody that I'll be all of this by the way. I need more of the Holy Spirit How many of you might say this come on heads up eyes open. I don't think we need to close them for this How many of you would say I I I I've prayed some prayers. I've come to church stuff like that But I'm not a hundred percent sure that I know God like that I'm not a hundred percent sure that if I died today right now that I would go to heaven and I want to give my heart to Christ I tell you what let's do let's go ahead and close your eyes I want to give me some privacy. I want to I want to commit or recommit my life to Christ Right now in the name of Jesus. Come on that she wants you live to hand all throughout the house today I want to I want to be saved many hands are going out Watch it online. Give us some emojis or something. Let us know that you're praying in this prayer Well, the only way you can be saved is by a work of the Spirit So has the Spirit showed you I'm a sinner. I need God. Amen has the Spirit showed you I love God loves me and he wants me to come home come on. Let's pray this prayer together Let's pray it out loud. Let's pray it together. Dear Jesus. I Believe you died on the cross You rose from the dead You did that for me and so today right now I Accept Christ as my Savior as my Lord in the name of Jesus Hey, man. Come on give God a hand clap his knee good Now father we pray over our church as we enter into this new adventure We pray that the Spirit of God would dominate like never before God if you don't meet us there We don't want to go God if you're not going to be in it And we don't even want it but God if you're in it if your spirit is going to pour out even more Then we say bye to this property and we move forth into what you have for us today
Do it spirit of God buy your power buy your work by your might in Jesus name amen Come on somebody Hey Hey before you leave Hey, if you gave your life to the Lord today If you raised your hand and said hey, that is me I want to give my life to the Lord for the very first time or maybe for the first time in a long time Hey, but you be bold enough real quick I know I know services ending and we're getting ready to go eat and move and I know you're excited to start carrying stuff I know I know I know don't just slow down It's okay Hey, if that's you would you just would you just boldly step out right over here seed Leon waving his hand you see that?
