Overflow Week 1

But until then, we have an encouraging message just for you, check it out. - Does anybody like the idea of too much in your life? - Yes. - Anybody like too much ice cream? - Yes. - Anybody like when you order six chicken fingers and they give you eight? - Yes. - Too much, oh my God. If I like when you order those fries and they got your little cup filled, but then there's fries all in the bottom of the bag also, like too much, come on somebody. Favour, whatever that is like, too much. It's nice, it's nice when too much, it's we're gonna talk today, we're launching this little series on overflow. God has too much in mind when it comes to you and I. He is called El Shaddai, not El Chippo. Like God is not limited, God's blessings are not scarce. Like he's only got a few and he's got a rash in them. That's not the God that we serve. In fact, the Bible says in Malachi chapter three

that when we honor and worship him properly with what he's poured into our life, he said, I'm gonna open windows of heaven and pour it out on your life in ways that you cannot receive it. It's too much. I like that idea. And so this series, we're gonna be talking about how we access the overflow of heaven because it's not this mystical thing in the ear. God gives us specifics in his word. How do we walk in this? And so I wanna challenge your mindset regarding this, especially today. So let me ask you this. What is your favorite way to just kind of refresh, hit the restart button, recalibrate, recreate in your mind? What is it that gives you that, okay, I needed that. Now let me get back to living again. No, for some, it's like, okay, I just need a vacation. Where's the vacation, man? Well, I just, I did vacation. Okay, very good. It comes with a lot of bills. All right, so that just for what that's wrong. I mean, like, okay, I just need a movie. I just wanna get quiet. I don't want kids pulling on me. I just wanna, I just wanna get on the couch with a blanket and where's the movie people?

Okay, if you move people, okay, yeah, okay. How many of you are like, I just need a massage. I need a massage, you get me like, I just need somebody to rub the stress right out. Okay, very good. Where's the, the dinner people? I just need a dinner away. I just, one that I did not have to cook. I don't have to clean up the dishes. I'm just unplugged that. Okay, we got some dinner people. I'm not mad at that. I'm the guy that I need to be outdoors. Put me where there's, put me in camo, baby. I am a happy camper, hang me in a tree somewhere. I am loving life. It just does something really good with my head space. I love that. How are you like, I just need to go shopping. Shopping, just rega, yeah, that's what I thought. Some y'all are so good at that. Amazon sends you birthday cards every year. I know how that goes. Well, whatever it is that seems to recreate you, refresh you, can I just remind you that usually we have to spend a lot of money to get there. And then here's what I've learned. It's kind of hit and miss. 'Cause what seemed to work a couple of months ago isn't working.

Now, you ever gone on that vacation, spend all that money? It was amazing. You put all the Instagram pictures out there. You come back three days later. Man, I need a vacation. It's like, what happened with that? How did we get there? Which tells me a lot of the things that we do self-focused only bring temporary results. It's not lasting. It's there and then it's gone. And there's nothing wrong with any of those things by themselves. It's all good, but to make those my go-to in order to try to fulfill the emptiness in my life doesn't work that way. The Bible instead gives us a fail-proof way to refresh our lives. But here's the issue. It's counterintuitive. It'll mess with your head. It's not the way you typically think. It's going to, it's going like, I'm going to help you with this because it's a core principle in the Bible that comes to liberate us so that we can live a fresh, strong life every day of our life. Here's what the Bible says. Proverbs, chapter 11, verse 25.

Read it loud. Read it proud. Read it with me. The generous will prosper. Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. And generous generosity will prosper in your life. This is powerful. The Bible is literally informing. It's a principle informing us this. The path to refreshing and renewing your life, watch this, it comes from your decision to be generous to somebody else. That's what feeds you. The Bible is saying that is the key. Maybe you can relate with this. You ever been out? Whether you're just on the street, going to dinner, pumping gas, and somebody that you don't know randomly approaches you and say, hey, you got a couple extra dollars. Y'all know what I'm talking about? Of course you do, of course you do. Somebody else say, I do that all the time. Well, okay, I'm glad you're here, but I'm just, there's a lot of fun, like, hey, you got a few extra dollars, I've been approached in all these locations. And it's interesting, like, you kind of get a vibe based on who's approaching you as to whether, yes.

But more times than not, like, no, man. We can just be very dismissive of that whole thing. And has anybody, like me, don't hold your hand down in shame. All you did it, so raise your hand and admit it. Anybody like me said, no, I ain't got nothing for you. And just kind of just dismissed it and then just walked away. Anybody, like, I'm not giving anything to you. See some of y'all lying in church right now. Y'all know you ain't giving nobody. You didn't give it to your kid either, but I'm just saying, like, I'm not giving nobody, yeah. Yeah, and watch this, admit it. Be honest, you're in church. If you lie, you fry. Be in church, now listen, here, here, no, no, no, I'm kidding. Watch this, watch this, watch this. You said, you said, no. Get my money, probably going to waste it anyway. Walked away, and then you felt bad for not giving them the money that they asked for. Isn't that the craziest thing? I said no to somebody who asked me for something because I figured they were going to abuse it anyway. I just write it off as a scam artist, but then walking away because I told somebody no and I withheld generosity, I walk away feeling bad about something that I rationalized was right. How does that work?

It's crazy. Well, I want some of my favorite accounts that I follow on Instagram. Are those guys who are going out and they find homes that are in disrepair and the grass is growing up and trees are overgrown and they're out there and they just show up and say, "Can I just fix your house?" And man, I will watch those things and just and watch them, like mowing and knocking trees down. I watched a guy last night, spent $10,000 of his own money building the guy, a brand new fence and just pouring back into it like, that's crazy. And you know what's amazing? These posts have a million, million and a half views and celebration because seeing somebody walk and live out generosity somehow, whether you're a Christ follower or not, it touches you in the core of who you are because we know that generosity towards others is right. We have snapshots of this truth all through the Bible. Examples for us to follow. What one that steps out with me is a guy named Abraham. The Bible says that Abraham, he was sitting in his tent one day, this is Genesis 18, sitting in his tent one day and he looks out and the Bible says it's noon day so it's hot and he sees three strangers. He don't know these cats. He sees three strangers walking.

And Abraham, a wealthy guy, he's got it going on. He's got servants, he's got, like he's loaded. Abraham sees the guys, jumps up. The Bible says he runs to the men and bows down at their feet and says, "Would you please allow me to serve you today?" He says, "I would like to wash your feet." Pastor Tamika, that's that one just for you. I'd like to wash your grimy toes that got stuck. I want to wash your feet and I want to prepare you lunch and I want to give you a place to rest. Would you please do this? You see, for Abraham, that wasn't just a guy living generous, it was, but what motivated was Abraham's love for God required him to express that level of service to other people. So it was Abraham's opportunity to worship God through serving others, that's why he did this. So they agreed, they come in. Abraham, the Bible says he turned to his wife Sarah, he goes, "Go get three seahs of fine wheat flour." Now if you just read that in the King James, you just kind of dismiss it for whatever. Three seahs, that's a weight, that's a measurement. That's 36 pounds, y'all. Go get 36 pounds of fine wheat. Do you know what, but wheat is top shelf bread. Barley is what everybody used. Abraham said, "I want you to go get the top shelf, "the best that we've got.

"Get 36 pounds of it and make that carabas bread "with that oil and herbs and break it out." While she's doing that, he then goes and he chooses a calf. He chooses the calf to have, kill, watch, not a sheep, not a goat, he went next level. This was extreme, extreme. He has the calf, kill, he says, we're gonna put some stakes on the grill. He literally lays the table out, the Bible specifies, bread, cheese, stakes, and they had some milk that was fresh, all this was delicacy top level. And he serves these three men with such a generosity that it was next level, but in his generosity, Abe was blessed back because one of the guys, one of the strangers, the Bible says, when they got, then eating and rested, the guy said, Abraham, come here. He was like, yes, what else do you need? He goes, no, just, where's your wife? He said, she's back here. And the stranger tells Abraham and his wife, I'll be back one year from now, and in one year you're gonna have a son. Sarah said, (laughing) She laughed in his face and the stranger called her out. And you know what the Bible tells us? It wasn't a stranger, it was God. It was the Lord, what had happened? Abraham, when he brought three in,

the Bible doesn't say it's specific, but I can't understand if it was God, why it's not also the Son and Holy Spirit, that the triune Godhead was sitting in his tent that day, Abe's generosity refreshed God, and God's generosity refreshed Abraham and gave him a son named Isaac that then birthed Jacob, 12 sons of Israel, and there's a nation today in the Middle East that are existent because of this reality. Ladies and gentlemen, the far reach of this is beyond what we can even understand. In fact, the Bible says in Hebrews chapter, it tells us, be really careful, because some of you are entertaining angels that you don't know anything about. You thought it was somebody at the gas station who just asked him for $5, and you don't understand, that was God wrapped in flesh, checking to see where your generosity is. This was a test of the most wonderful kind to see what's up inside your heart. This is what the Bible tells us, be careful of entertaining angels unaware. Another story we get is a woman of zerafath, this widow woman in zerafath. This will mess with your head, generosity in times of poverty. This will mess with you.

Because while Abraham was wealthy, this woman was not, was not. First Kings chapter 17 tells us there was this massive famine that had just decimated the land. And God tells Elijah, I want you to go to a little account called zerafath. Zerafath is just below Bartow. And if you just go down and go down to zerafath, and I want you to hang out there, and when you get there, you're gonna see a woman, and I want you, Elijah, to tell the woman to give you some food. Elijah goes, he shows up in the middle of this famine, thinking, "Okay, this is gonna work." And then sees the woman gathering some sticks, he goes, "Hey, excuse me. "Could I please have some food?" Lady goes, "You're not from these parts, are you?" She said, "I'm a widow. "I have a son." And she said, "I'm gathering sticks "to literally cook, bake, the very last cake we own. "I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel "to get enough flour. "I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel "to get enough oil. "I have one cake we're gonna make. "Me and Junior are gonna eat it, "and first King 17 says, "and then we will die." That was her play.

She was out, she had no resource. It was done, it's over. And Elijah did something that just kinda makes me uncomfortable. He goes, "Yeah, well, feed me first." I don't know if the Lakeland Ledger had been there that day. They would have had snapshots and video. Preacher asked woman for last cake. I mean, can you imagine how all that would have hit the news? And rightfully so. I mean, how can you get like that? That's so twisted. And the woman looks back at Elijah. And here's what Elijah said, "If you will feed me first, God will supply in your life." And there was something about that moment that connected with the woman's heart. And here's what she realized. Since what I have in my hand is not enough for my future, then I need to put it in God's hand so he can create a future that I can live in. (audience applauding) (applause) It was next to him. Understand, she gave a cake. In other words, her gift was not extravagant. She gave a cake, y'all. But her giving was still generous. You see, generosity is not decided by how many commas and zeros are in it.

In fact, the truth is, you don't really know what generous is until you check what's left over after it's been given. Someone can write a $100,000 check, but if they're a multi-squillionaire, they'll never even miss it. But you get somebody who gives $10, and that was a greater sacrifice than $100,000 ever would have been, and the $10 was generosity. It's what's left over. This woman gave it all, and it produced overflow in her life. In fact, 1 Kings 17, verse 16, read it with me. Here's what it says. The jar of flour was never empty, and the jug of oil never ran out just as the Lord had promised through Elijah. God became her supply and ended, watch her famine. He didn't end the famine, he ended her famine. In other words, she still had horrible circumstances around her, but she existed in a tore-up situation. She stood strong, and God was the supplier and meter of the need in her life. In other words, all your circumstances don't have to change, but when you get a handful of God, and he's the one supplying and meeting needs, there can be craziness there, but I've got peace in here, and I know everything is gonna be all right, because God is the one that supplies. These principles are speaking to us all through the word.

One act of generosity ended her famine. This law of return is universal. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 11, 25, again, I want to read it to you, I want you to read it loud. Get this in your spirit, I want to layer this. The generous will prosper. Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Don't let that just run past you. This past Wednesday night, the blend were in here. The blend, the student ministry at Freelife Chapel. They've outgrown the theater where they were. They had over 170 teenagers piled in this place on Wednesday night and growing. It's just continuing to expand. If you're grateful that teenagers are excited about Jesus today, can you, I mean, you, that part. If you're a teenager and you're not here, please get here, mom and dad, get your kids here, like let them be a part of this movement. It's so exciting, but they held a night on Wednesday night called One Night, and One Night was where every student was challenged to bring one person with them, and we incentivized it, they weren't better with incentive, just like you do. So we, everybody who came gets a free ticket, and if you brought a friend, you got another ticket, and we're giving away a PS5 that night. Now, if you don't know what a PS5 is, it's a gaming console that, and about $550, like it's a nice gaming console.

It's that place that your kids disappear to for days. You don't know where they are. They're up there with that console. That's what's happening. So we're giving them a PS5, kind of a big deal for the youth that night. Well, this young lady, her name is Francis. Francis wins the gaming console. Francis is like, her ticket got drawn. She wins this gaming console, and Francis, we found out later, she realized, well, at the house, we have a gaming console, but my friend and her family, they've been wanting one and don't have one, so she gave it to her at the family. (audience applauds) What? She didn't say, I'll give it to you for a discount. She wasn't trying to sell that thing, marketplace it, and then come in. She was just like, I want to bless somebody. She didn't have a poverty mindset. It wasn't, I'm losing some. Is Francis here today? Is Francis here today? Francis here, that she usually comes on the third service. She can be so glad she came, I promise you that, because her generosity touched my heart. And I'm like, you know what? You gotta celebrate generosity.

You lean in. Oh, I know, I know some of y'all right now. Some of y'all know Francis, and you go, girl, I just saw Pastor Paul money out of his pocket, get here to this third service, no matter what, yeah, I hope she cuts, she better be here, I'll find her, I'll find her. Here's what's amazing, here's what's amazing. The good news is this, the PS5 left her life, but it's gonna come back better than it ever was before. This is what God's Word is saying. What you give comes back, and it comes back better. Jesus made this a neutral principle. It's a neutral principle, because it's not just about money, it's about all areas, it's not just about blessing. Luke chapter six, verse 38, here's what it says. Give and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full. Press down, shake together to make room for you. Running over and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. What the word is saying here is this is not all constricted and locked into finances. No, in fact, this whole passage is talking about things like judging people, walking and living in unforgiveness. That's what it's taught. It includes resources, but it's so much bigger than that. In fact, the original version of this verse, we were reading a translation. It says that if you give it'll be given good measure,

pressed down, shaken together, running over, will people give back to you? God was saying, it's not just a spiritual blessing in the high, by and by, one day you might see something. No, no, no, in this lifetime, in this lifetime, right here, right now, people will bless you. I will cause people to pour it back. Watch this, but it's neutral, so it's good and bad. So the way that you act in your marriage determines what you get in your marriage. The way that you treat your friends, determines why your friends treat you. Your coworkers, let's skip that. Strangers in your life. Like, that's what he's saying that these people can be a blessing to you or they can be a pain to you. It's based on what you present, whatever you give is coming back. It's always a seed. It's neutral, it applies in every arena. Watch this, you give nothing, you get nothing. You can't complain for stuff that you don't get. Farmers do not step out in the field every year and go, grow! They put seed in the ground. They've got to make a deposit. They've got to put something out and then they expect it back 30, 60 on 100 fold. It always comes back greater than it leaves your life.

So a seed of nothing produces nothing back. If you give an attitude, you're gonna get an attitude back. Some of y'all know what I'm talking about right now. Yeah, I gave one of those this morning. I bored that I get one back. I know that's what happens in your house, outside the house, it just doesn't matter. You give judgment, you'll get judgment. It's a principle in the world, but here's some good news. If you wanna live in prosperity, you wanna live refreshed. If you give grace, you'll receive grace. I wanna be gracious, caring. I wanna be protective for people. And I promise you those same folks who come back and they're gonna protect love and care for you. You give encouragement, you will live in the overflow of encouragement in your life. Stop waiting on someone to give you a compliment and start giving them out. You see, if you and I live our lives, always so self-focused that I'm waiting on someone to refresh my life, then you'll live as a victim and be owned by everybody for the rest of your life. Because people will be the ones determining whether you have a good day or not. And God said, don't ever turn that much authority

in your life over to anybody else. You take authority for yourself. What you launch is what's gonna come back into your life. So you need to decide, this is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. And all y'all can have a sour attitude and push back on it, but you can't rob me because I will be refreshed because I'm going to find somebody I can pour this life into. That's how we live our life. If I walk in a soul kindness, I'm gonna receive kindness. If you walk around with a smile on your face, number one, people are gonna be suspicious. Number two, somebody's gonna have to smile back at you. It's a great way to live. If you walk in patience with others, they're gonna have patience with you. Walk in love, you're gonna receive love. You are the one who decides what returns in your life. You all decide that. 'Cause whatever you give, it's coming back. It's called overflow. Somebody shout overflow. See, this truth isn't meant to be passive and dismissed. Oh, they're just a great proverb, stop it. It's a truth you can build your life on. It will rearrange your world if we can get it into our heart, our mind, our ethos.

That's why generosity is one of the core values of free life chapel. And we do everything we can to live it out. The event coming up at the end of this month, we're giving that away. But generosity says this, church, if you'll keep refreshing others, if you'll keep lifting others, if you'll keep supporting others, I'm going to pour it right back into your world. So ladies and gentlemen, here's what I found out. You can't out give God. And when you love people and help lift them, God's going to love you and He's going to lift you. It's just the economy of God's Word. It worked for Abraham and Sarah. It worked for the widow woman in Zerephath and so many others, the centurion, the woman with the alabaster box, Barnabas.

I can go down the line and give you multiple examples of this. It's going to work. It's going to work for Francis as soon as I see her. I'm just telling you, if it worked for all those, it'll work for you too. - Right. - Would you turn to someone, tell them it's going to work for me. It's going to work for me. What I'm trying to tell you is this. What I'm sharing with you is a holy life hack. God said, I'm not holding keys to next level of living from you. Stop being so self-focused on what I don't have, what I need. I never should have gone through. You can live victimized for the rest of your life or you can realize this truth that in your difficult, what you think is your state of lack right now is somebody else's massive level of breakthrough that they've been praying for for so long. You and I are so blessed right now. You're praying for $10,000 and someone beside you is praying for $10. And all I've got to do is extend $10 to answer somebody else's prayer. I get to be that. We got to change our focus, folks. Jesus died and brought us into his house so that we would not live so focused on us.

We would live focused on those that he died for as well. I gave him all of who I am, Jesus' culture. The highest idea in all of Judaism then and now is called tikkun olam. That's what the tat says, tikkun olam. It literally means repair the world. Put it back together again with your voice, with your post on Instagram, with your conversation at work, with your talking to a stranger, help strengthen them. They're in a broken state. They need somebody who can walk in with enough hope that I'm not starving so much that I'm hoarding it. I've got so much hope I can give some away to somebody else. When we realize how blessed we are right now, we get to be the hand in the heart of God extended to others. It's time to live like playmakers. Y'all know what a playmaker is? When I was growing up, I played football for a little while and I heard the coach many times, "Thomas, get off the bench and get in the field." And you know, "Thomas, quit crying, get in the field." I got, you know, all that. But this phrase rang out, be a playmaker, make a play, get it done, make a play out there. And if you play ball, you knew what he was talking about. He was saying, "Don't just go out there "and be in a position. "Do something with your play

"that sends the game in a trajectory "that it wasn't expected. "Change the game." So when the pass is thrown, back up and make an interception and turn this whole thing around. If you're on the defensive line, get through the line and sack the quarterback, put him in a deficit, change the game, they're going to punt, get in there, block the punt, change this game. Do something no one ever saw coming and turn it around, be a playmaker. And ladies and gentlemen, that's exactly what God's word is for you and I. Stop just coasting through life, get up and make a play. Get up and say, "I'm not just going to go through "with everything. "I'm here to make a difference and turn the course. "Change the mindset of somebody in my world. "I'm going to interject some hope and joy "and a smile and some love and some patience "and some peace and some hope. "I'm going to give it to some people "and turn their world around." It's what you're called to as a believer. You and I don't have the opportunity being self-absorbed with everything I need, I need, I need, I want. Our culture is consumed with that. Our culture is all about me, what I hear. I'm offended, I don't like it. I want more, I want different.

Get out of my, it's amazing how our culture is so consumed with that and God's word tells us be consumed with him and those that he died for. Stay on mission. It's what we're called to do and when we do that all the refreshing and the prosperity, every need, it's going to be met if we'll change our mind. Would you turn someone and tell them we've got to change our mind, we've got to change our mind. I'm sending you home this week with some homework. Yep, homework. I need you to get in your mind right now, somebody that you know, that you're going to target with your generosity. Oh, that's right. Draw a bullseye on them right now. Ooh, I'm coming for you. I'm going to mess with you. I'm going to shoot text messages. I'm going to just stop by the workplace and say, "Hey, what's going on? We're just thinking about you. Can we go get some lunch?" I just, I would just give them a shout out on social media. Check on someone who's been sick. Maybe provide a meal for them. Go visit somebody that's in the hospital. You know someone who just lost somebody in the past three months. Check on them. Check on them. It takes so little to refresh others. And I promise you in whatever capacity you do it, you're going to walk away going, I did that thing right there. Yes, I did. Ooh, that feels so good. It's the heart of God. You literally with the hands and the heart of Jesus touching and strengthening others. So that is, that's the homework. The good news is I'm also providing extra credit. Here's your extra credit. I want you to target somebody with your generosity this week that you don't know. I want you to mess with somebody, mess with them with your generosity to the degree that before they get home, they got to pick up the phone and call somebody. All right, you're not going to believe what just happened to me.

I don't even know this person. They walked in smiling. That was weird. But it only got better from there. They had this, they had this peace. They had this joy that buy somebody's coffee today, this week at Starbucks. If you don't do Starbucks, go to Duncan, don't buy their coffee. If not there, go to 7-Eleven and buy somebody's coffee. Just buy some coffee, would you? Do something to bless, encourage others. If you're picking up a donut for you one morning, pick up a couple and buy them for everybody else. Just give something away. Refresh others. It's going to come back to you. This gentleman is Bible. It puts a smile on God's face. It gets us out of being so absorbed with ourself that I begin to care about others in life. And now I become a resource. I become hope. I become joy. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a game changer. I'm reminded of this over and over again when I get pictures on my phone regularly with our Polk CI, our team there. We love our Polk CI campus and the hundreds of men at Polk CI that are part of free life chapel. I love you guys. I'm going to come and see you soon. I'm coming to see you soon. I can't wait to be there. But we have, we have teams every Tuesday night. I think this past Tuesday had like a 290 some if I'm not mistaken. 290 some inmates together on Tuesday night having church with with one of our services playing on the screen and our teams were there with them. But it's not just on Tuesdays. Here's what blesses me. The Polk CI teams that are in there on Tuesdays, I then get these dings on my phone and and another guy just parole it out. He's done. His time's over. They open the gates. They let him out and guess who's waiting on him once he walks out of those gates. The first face he sees is free life chapel. People waiting on him when he walks out the gate saying, welcome home, baby. You did that. It's done. Let's go giving him a backpack full of supplies and some things to help him. Many times the family is there to connect with him. Ladies and gentlemen, that's giving away. We're not rocking anybody's world. I wish I could give him 10,000 apiece. We don't have that, but we can do something. And it all lifts hearts and minds serving in the church. I can find a way to serve my life away. I can help. This is what it's all about. Ephesians chapter six verse eight, if you're looking for a new tat, this is a good one. Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free. Oh, that last phrase is powerful. In other words, I don't care what your condition is. You can still be a blessing to somebody. Whether you fill out on top of the world or you got circumstances you don't like, it doesn't matter. You can make an impact. Let's pray. Father, thanks for your word that gives us these hacks to live a life that's full of hope, fulfillment, joy. It doesn't make life

lavish. I still have needs. I still have things that I walk through that... but I can still be such a blessing and I can live at a higher level of peace and strength and rest and know that not only do I have your attention, but I have your promise that you're gonna supply and meet needs in my life and even take me into overflow. Oh God, I want that relationship with you. So we won't live down to the mantra of culture. We will live up to the promise and the directive of your word. We're not victims, we're victors. And so we choose to be the head and not the tail. We choose to give and supply and bless and not live always looking to receive. No, you're a giver, you're not a taker.
