What's up, men of God? Pastor Eric here, and I am so excited to bring this message to you. I want you to feel encouraged. I want you to feel hopeful. I want you to know that God is still working in your story. Our mission here at Victory City is to help every person take a step closer to Jesus. And can I tell you, man, as you're growing in the Lord, you're taking a step. So let's lean in, let's see what God has for us this week, and I know you'll be blessed for it, and I love you. All right, let's go to Acts chapter one. As you're turning, I'm gonna greet our Bartlett Innovation Unit. Come on, men of God, I love you guys. So grateful for y'all. So we're gonna be in the book of Acts for the next year. Seriously. Today is kind of an introductory message. If you wanna know what the book of Acts is all about, today is the message that sets up the whole series. It's literally what the rest of the book of Acts is about is what I'm gonna talk about today. Not specifically, but an overview. And so my goal is to whet your appetite for the book of Acts and get you hungry for the things of the Lord so that you won't use your 13 skips. You'll use six skips because you're so hungry

to be in the church, to hear the word. And maybe that's a pipe dream, but I'm believing, amen? All right, Acts chapter one, verses one through 11. I'm gonna read the scripture, I'm gonna pray, and then we're gonna talk about it. Sound good? In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach until the day he was taken up and after he had given commands to the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them, he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which he has said, you heard it from me, for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of Israel? He said to them, it is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. And when he had said these things,

they were looking on as he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven, he went and behold, two men stood by them in white robes and said, men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven, he will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. I wanna title today's message, Now What? Now What? Let's pray. Heavenly Father, Lord, I am so excited to preach this message and I pray that I am able to be clear and not overly excited. And will you just help me do my best to get this power into the hearts of our church? Lord, I pray that you would help every person take a step closer to Jesus. And Father, I pray if there's skeptics here, there's doubters, those are those who are outside of the faith. Lord, I pray that the power of the Holy Spirit would convict their hearts and they would be brought into the family of faith this morning. In Jesus' name we pray, amen. Have you ever been bored in church? Let me ask it again. Have you, without the kids. Have you ever been bored in this church? Y'all are liars.

How many of you last week, during the theology talk, you were like, I'm a little bored. I mean, come on, there's some of you. My daughter, after the 11 o'clock, thank you, I appreciate it. After the 11 o'clock was like, dad, that was so boring. I had no idea what he was talking about. So let me ask you one more time. How many of you guys have ever been bored in one of my messages? Yeah, thank you, I appreciate it, Julius. Thank you so much, thank you, JJ. Thank you, thank you, love y'all so much. Go find a new church. Okay, let me ask you a different question. How many of you have ever found yourself bored as a Christian? Like, yeah, like you got saved and it was like all new, it's powerful, it was amazing, and then kind of you got in this religious routine where you like come to church and you know church is predictable, you know there's going to be like three songs, and then the pastor's going to get up, there's going to be some announcements, and then we, every week, we just been to church, now let's go be the church, and you're like, yeah, that's great. No, really, like have you ever found yourself bored as a Christian thinking like, is this all that's there? Like, is this, like now what? Like, is it literally just the rest of my life just try not to sin? And the rest of my life, whatever I make, give a little bit to the church, and for the rest of my life, we sing some songs, and you ever been bored? You see, because when I read the book of Acts, it doesn't look boring, looks scary, looks wild, looks like uncontrolled, it looks just like,

man, what is that? Because that doesn't look like what I'm experiencing. Like, these people are having these moves of God, they're seeing miracles. I mean, like when you read the book of Acts, you see tongues of fire and a great wind, you see Paul getting bit by a snake and shaking it off into the fire, you see prisoners who pray and the earthquake happens, and literally prisoners are getting set free from jail. Bartlett, hold up, don't pray those prayers. I don't know if that's the prayer. I love you, I want you to be free in Jesus' name. Parole. Okay, my point is, like, you see some, like, wild, wild stuff in the book of Acts. Now, you're in one of two categories. I'm going to generalize here, but if you come from, like, the Holy Spirit Pentecostal charismatic camp, you're like, oh, shoot, it's Holy Spirit time, now we're about to get wild, here we go, Shondi, we're about to have church. And then, right, see, I told you, right, they're here, they're in there, right? They're here. And then they're, right, I preach you with me, sister. Okay, here's my thing, my point. Then there's another category generalizing that is like, what are we about to do? Like, what's going on here? Like, this is, like, you want it predictable, you want it nice, you want it polished, you want it clean. Hi, sir, how are you? Yes, in the name of Jesus, praise God, right? You want it controllable. Now, here's the thing, when I walk through the book of Acts, I'm going to try to do it faithfully, I'm going to try to do it theologically,

but one thing when reading the book of Acts, you can see that it is very supernatural. There is a power that is beyond human power that fill the life of believers to help them do things beyond their own human ability, and their lives were not boring. Now, let me explain something to you. I'm going to walk you down a journey, and I need you to lock in for about seven minutes, because I think that there's a lot of Christians that don't really understand what they are to do when it comes to what the church is. For example, my dad's a mechanic, and sometimes we would be working on cars, and he would come, and we'd be standing over an engine, and he'd hand me some tools, and he'd be like, what I need you to do is take that lug nut off and lift this over and do this thing here, and I'm going to go get this other tool to make sure you can do that, and I'm standing over tools, and I'm like, you know, what are you wanting me to do? I have no idea what you just said. That doesn't even make sense. You ever gone through a training at work, and they train you really fast, and you're going like, wait, what exactly am I supposed to do? And then maybe a boss goes, well, you'll just figure it out as you go. Great advice, right, you know? See, I think some of us, we've reduced Christianity down to like religious ritual, where it's like, okay, go to church. Okay, check the books, go to church. Okay, don't sin. That was in pencil. I'll do that. Make sure you pray. Okay, I prayed. Okay.

And make sure you go to connect group too, because if you don't go to connect group, you're not living in community, so go to connect group. Okay, check the chat. That was an awkward connect group, but pastor said to go. I mean, it's fine. It got weird. Join a team. Make sure you join a team, because that's part of what being a church... Okay, okay. Joined a team without ever understanding, like, what it all adds up to. Like, what are we really doing here? Like, what is the church? You see in Acts chapter one, verse four, let's go to some texts and understand this a little bit. It says, do not depart, but wait for the promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit is coming. That's the summary of those two verses. So we have to understand that the book of Acts, this is gonna be head information, because I need us all to have an understanding before we go to the next level. The book of Acts is a 30-year historical narrative story of what the first 30 years of what we are doing today, that was the beginning of it. This is literally like the birth of the church. And so you can imagine the disciples are going, wait, what, what are we supposed to do? Like, you're leaving, bro. What, what? And you have to see how Jesus saw the church.

Jesus saw the church as literally the vehicle to transform the world. So there's no, like, plan B. What we do when we gather together, we edify ourselves in the Lord, we grow in the Lord, we offer worship to the Lord as a distinct community. There's a distinction upon the presence of God when the church gathers physically that emboldens us to then go out into the world and to literally be agents of transformation in the world. Now, some of us have a misunderstanding of appropriate theology. See, you grew up, where are my millennials at? You grew up on videos like Left Behind. You ever been watching the Left Behind series? And it just, if you want something fun to watch this afternoon, go watch Left Behind. It's actually terrifying. And maybe you believe in this thing where it's like, the church is this lifeboat, and one day God's gonna come take the church out of the world, and then the earth is gonna get destroyed, and we're gonna all go be in this heaven somewhere else. Is that kind of like a rough framework of maybe what some of you have an understanding of heaven? If you don't wanna admit it, that's cool. You see, we have a misunderstanding of something called eschatology. That's a big term.

And eschatology is the study of the end times. Like, where is all this headed? And you see, many Christians have a holdout mentality. I wanna get saved, I wanna hold on white-knuckled until I die, or until God comes back and he rescues all the Christians, and then sends meteorites to destroy the earth. That is a wrong understanding of Scripture. You see, in Genesis 12, God blesses Abraham and God blesses Abraham so that all the people of the earth will be blessed through what God is going to do through Abraham, Israel, Jesus, and the church. Lean in with me. We are truly the change agent for everything in the world, and the Lord, Jesus, is coming back here. And the Lord is going to restore the earth here. So literally, the Scripture talks about heaven coming to earth, and what's amazing, like, for my science people, what's amazing is literally God is going to remake our atmosphere, he's gonna remake our continents, he's gonna remake everything to build, literally, a global Garden of Eden. That's wild, man. Imagine that. And then, he's gonna take our persons. You see, yes, this is who I am, but there's another dimension to me,

which is my inner self, which is really who I am. And God is going to take that inner self, my mind, my person, and he's gonna give me a heavenly body. I'm waiting for that. And then, we are going to live on earth forever in perfect community and union with God. Literally, we will have peace on earth. If it sounds too good, be true. Like, let your imagination run. Like for me, heaven is full of Augusta National Golf Courses. And every day, I get the best foursome in the world and it's just me and my buddies in the Holy Spirit, and we're playing golf every day. And nobody's sad, there's no bogeys in heaven, it's only birdies. Maybe your heaven is somewhere on an island in the Pacific Ocean and you're on a beach every day and it's just amazing. And the presence of God fills the earth so much that you feel perfect, perfect peace. You're at rest. It feels incredible, it feels like a dream. This is what God is trying to create. But right now, we're in what's called the in-between. We're in the in-between. We're in the church age, the spirit age. And what's so paradoxical is that God chose to use you and me to bring about this redemptive work on earth, and it's kind of like, God, I need some redemptive work in me. You ever feel that? But that's the paradoxical element to it. I am still incomplete, the Lord is still working in me, but yet, He has called me to be a witness in the world so that He redeems the world. Why? So that we can never take the credit for it. Because if we just were like, we are the best, let me tell you how to be a Christian, I am perfect. The world would look at us and go, man, phooey on that. But when we come to people going, I'm a broken individual, the Lord is working on me, and there's evidence of God's working in on me that's producing the fruit of the Spirit, then suddenly, we are suddenly a distinct community.

That's what Jesus...literally, Jesus says this, that the Christians are supposed to be a totally different culture. It can be multi-ethnic, but it's a singular culture. I went to a quinceañera last night. That's a different culture than what I grew up in. I was like, what am I supposed to do? Oh, we dance. Okay, cool, we dance. All right, that's sweet. Hi, I'm a white boy, I don't dance. So, I want you to understand something. For those of us who come to church in the routine, checking the boxes, it's because we miss actually what God is calling us to do. Like, your job only places you in your...it places you to be a witness to those around you. And when I live with a mindset that I'm just supposed to hold out, and wait, and wait, and wait, and then God comes rescuing me, I miss the point of actually being a Christian, and I miss the point of being a part of the church. And that's why we as the church, we will be massively aggressive at reaching more people, because the more people we reach, the more people are redeemed in the Holy Spirit, and the more people that are redeemed in the Holy Spirit, that means more of the world begins to change. You see, if we add more Bible-believing, Spirit-filled, loving, peaceful agents of the gospel into our world, can I tell you, our world changes one soul at a time. That is what Jesus has invited you into. You, like you, individually, have been grafted into God's purpose to redeem the world. Don't hide behind the bus. You individually. Does that feel heavy? And how you respond to that reveals your heart posture. I don't want to do that. Okay, then Jesus isn't priority in your life. Whatever else is more important to you, that's your priority. If you feel overwhelmed, good. You should feel overwhelmed, because we can't do it in our own effort. Let's go to the Scripture. That's why Jesus, in Acts 1, verse 7, says, it is not for you to know the times and seasons. Pause. Jesus is saying, I'm going to restore the world, but I'm not going to tell you when. That's above your pay grade. All I need you to do in your generation. Imagine all the Christians in 700 A.D. They were being faithful so that the church could expand.

And let's just say time goes on and all of a sudden it's 3500 A.D. And the population has grown, time has advanced. Has God come back yet? No. But does that mean he's not going to come back? No, because it said, I'm coming back. But because you don't know when, all I need you to do is to be faithful in your lifetime. That's why Paul says, I have run my race. You got one life here on earth, one. And the reason many of you might feel bored is because you've been living it for you. And suddenly, oh hold up, and suddenly when you catch a vision of what you're called to, when you catch a purpose of what you're called to, when you catch the Holy Spirit deep down in your soul, can I tell you, you can live a book of Acts life where you see miracles, where you see signs and wonders, where you see strongholds come down, where you are filled with the power of God to do things that you could have never done on your own. That's why he tells them, don't leave Jerusalem. You can't do this without what I'm giving you. Isn't that crazy? Jesus says, go into all the world and make disciples, but don't leave yet. Wait 10 days, because you need something. That's why he says this in Acts chapter seven, verse eight. It is not for you to know the times and seasons,

but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria, in the Philippines, in Lagos, Nigeria, in Sao Paulo. Come on somebody, in Pflugerville, Texas, in Gerald, Texas. Come on, in Taylor, Texas. Come on, in Cedar Park, Texas. Come on, at Brushy Creek Dental. Come on, he's saying, you will be my witnesses at Christian Brothers Auto in Taylor, Texas. Come on, you will be my witnesses at Dell. Come on, you will be my witnesses at HEV. Come on, you will be my witnesses in Jesus' name, wherever you go. Come on. Come on. Now this is wild. No other religion says that God will be made in the form of a spirit and dwell within you. Think about the metaphysical reality of the very God who spoke the universe into existence. Y'all, there's one billion stars, supposedly, in just our Milky Way galaxy alone. And of the known universe, there are two trillion galaxies. Your mind, it's so big, your mind literally cannot wrap around that. And that God lives in you. What?

And some of us have not had this epiphany. We've not had this realization that the very spirit of God can dwell on the inside of me. He can lead me, he can guide me. That's why in Acts 3.21, it says, heaven must receive him until the time of restoring all things. What is that? He's restoring everything. Who? Through us. See, the power of the Holy Spirit is something that is dynamic. It animates our life, it empowers our life, it guides our life. He dwells within us. So the things that have been frozen, the things that have been dead, the Holy Spirit can animate you. Literally, on the inside, begin to breathe on you and bring life back to you. There's so many Christians that live in this poverty mentality of the spirit, that the work of the gospel is just human will and grit and force it and fake it. Oh my gosh. I believe that this series that we're gonna spend a year in

is gonna be so pivotal for our church. I believe that there's gonna be some people that really walk with me. And that God can really speak to. And it is going to shift the trajectory of our church and the trajectory of your life. I think it's going to be explosive. I think it's gonna. blow some of your minds. I think a year from now, some of you are going to be so full of the spirit that you would never describe your Christian walk as boring ever, ever, ever again. John 14, verse 16 through 17 says this, he will give you another helper to be with you forever. Even the Spirit of God, you know him, for he dwells within you and will be with you and will be in you. This is the mind-blowing thing. You see, Jesus was with his disciples. He walked with them, led them, guide them, taught them. And when Jesus leaves, there is a power, and what I'm trying to do is, again, whet your appetite to see this, the very power and presence of God can dwell within the human soul. Like when you ponder that thought, when you sit with it this evening, I pray you don't turn Netflix on and you ponder this thought, the Spirit of God can so fill my life that I experience something so otherworldly. You see, too many of us, we go to, I don't want the Holy Spirit to make me do crazy things. Well, he may, like, just a heads up, he may, but it's going to be wild and it's going to be so life-giving. I want my Gen Z and Gen Alphas, right? Like, they're the third generation who've been so departed from, like,

the Spirit moving in Pentecost. And like, I want you all to catch this and believe that God can truly make you into something so transformative for his work. Okay, so pause. Let's recap. The reason many of us are bored with the church is because we don't know actually what the church is for. The church is the redemptive element that God chose to redeem the world. So if we don't like racism in the world, if we don't like greed in the world, if we don't like hate in the world, if we don't like murder in the world, if we don't like all those terrible things, guess whose job it is to fill the world because we are people with love, we are people with generosity, we are people with grace, we are people with truth. And when we fill the world, that's what redeems the world. But that's really hard, Eric. I know it is. That's why you can't do it, but you full of the Holy Spirit can. And Jesus says, what have I called you to do? Last thing, I've called you to be witnesses. Witnesses is the most accessible thing. Imagine a person sitting at a coffee shop across from a bank. All of a sudden, a man comes running out, alarms are going, he's wearing a green hoodie, and he turns and runs north on 6th Street. Cops come to him, what'd you see? Saw a man in a green hoodie, come out, and he ran north on 6th Street. All he's doing is describing what he saw. Can I tell you that the most basic element of being a believer is just witnessing about what God has done in you? Why are you a Christian? Man, here's the deal.

Like, he absolutely transformed my life. He radically saved me. He's given me more purpose and meaning than anything I've ever experienced in my life. Yeah, but what about the Nephilim and the weird Old Testament stuff? I don't know yet, but here's what God's done in my life. He's radically changed my life. He's given me a peace I've never understood. I don't understand it. Yeah, but what about like all these... Bro, I don't know. Here's what I know. Jesus has radically transformed my life. He's given me a peace I could never understand. He's given me grace. He's forgiven me. I've never felt more free in my life. Yeah, but what about this weird technical theological thing that I saw on YouTube? Bro, I don't know. Here's what I know. Jesus radically transformed my life. I feel more peace than I've ever felt in my life. And when I accepted Jesus, I have a whole new life. And I don't have all the answers to that question. It's like the cop going, well, what was the motivations of the robber? I don't know. All I saw, he was in a green hoodie, and he went north on 6th Street. Was he carrying a gun or a knife? I don't know. All I saw, he's in a green hoodie, and he goes north on 6th Street.

At the basic element, you do not need to be an Ivy League grad. You do not need to come from a silicon think tank. You just have to be a witness of what God has done in you. Amen? I don't know if I believe all that Christian stuff. Okay, here's what God's done in me. And I'm going to tell it to the cows, come home. Why? Because I am filled with the Spirit of God who has courage, who doesn't care what you think. here's what God has done in me. He's filled my life. He's forgiven me. He's given me peace. He's given me joy. He's given me hope. I don't have all the answers, but I'll testify to what I've seen. And if you can't do that, ew. So witnessing is declaring at its most basic level. And here's what every single one of you can do tomorrow morning. I can declare what God has done in me. How was your weekend? Oh man, it was so good. I went to church. This pastor was preaching about the Holy Spirit. It was so good. It was amazing. Praise God. Co-workers all mad at you. Well, I went to a protest. Praise God. I was protesting hell in Jesus' name. I'm just witnessing what I saw. But let me tell you another level. Here's the deeper level. Ready? Here's the deeper level. And this is going back to that paradoxical element. We don't just witness with our mouth declarations. We witness with our life demonstrations. How we live our life. Are you a loving person? Are you a grouch? Are you one way at church and another way in the club? In the club? Are you one way in the lobby and another way on Tinder? Heyo. With that same phone, do you take notes in church and slide into DMs to people who you should not be sliding into DMs to? Oh, you see how your life testifies is just as important as how your mouth testifies. Watch out. That's why I don't think you could put a Bible verse in your profile and be an OnlyFans girl. I'm sorry, sweetheart. I'm sorry. I love you in Christ. Come back to Jesus. Now, how do we do that? How do we produce the fruit of the Spirit? If I were to describe someone who is loving, joyful, peaceful, self-control,

patient, that sounds like an amazing person. I want to hang out with that person. Well, that's what Christians are supposed to be because they're so full of the Spirit that God has produced joy in them, has produced grace in them, has produced patience in them, has produced self-control. Come on, y'all. Some of y'all need some self-control in the comment section. Lord, shut my mouth. I mean, you and your marriage, you need some self-control. Yep. Bless her, Lord, or bless him, Lord, whoever. And the rest of the Book of Acts is literally people believing we have been given this mission because Jesus says, you will do greater things than me. Do you know that Jesus was not very well-traveled? He never left the Levant. In fact, I can say the farthest place he traveled was about 200 miles. He says, you'll do greater things than me. And in 30 years, these men and women who believed the mission of the church, who were empowered by the Holy Spirit, both to declare and to demonstrate at their lives through harsh persecution, torture. Do you know that early in Jerusalem, when the Jews began to be converted to Christianity, they were blacklisted? Many of their businesses went bankrupt, but they believed it. They were thrown in arenas to be devoured by lions. They believed it. And in 30 years, the message of Jesus was taken further than Jesus ever took it. To the ends of the earth. Give me the name of one of the streets you live on. What's the name of the street you live on? Blue what? Blue Agate? Ends of the earth. Jeff, what's the name of the street you live on? Trammel Cove? Ends of the earth. People, so full of the Spirit. Literally, it's the rest of the book of Acts. And if we could catch this in our spirit, truly believe that God has filled me with His Spirit and so purposed me that I am called to be His witness. That's why, as a church, we are trying to reach as many people as possible, because we really believe that we can remake the world through the power of the Spirit.

And until you believe that so can you through the power of the Spirit, you will always live a boring Christian life. You see, men of Galilee was placed in there. Let's go to the scripture. It says, let me go back here. It says in verse 11, and he said, men of Galilee, that was important because Galilee was this backwater. It was this place where nobody good came from. It was like this ordinary, forgettable place. And Luke is writing that on purpose so that you and I, ordinary people, could see that these were just ordinary dudes. And it says that they came up and they were just like staring into heaven, like, what just happened? I don't know about you, but if I see a man float off into the clouds, I'm gonna probably sit there for a second and go, what just happened? A little overwhelming. But it says, the angel says, this Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven, he will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. And Luke's description in the book of Luke says that they went back home rejoicing. And I like to think of it with my imagination. They're probably going back going,

oh my gosh, we get to be a part of this. They just heard from a man who they saw come back to life. I don't know about you, but I'm probably believing what a man who just came back to life is probably gonna say to me. I've seen him walk on water. I've seen him multiply five loaves and two fishes. I've seen him turn water into wine, and I get to be a part of that. Come on, I'm just believing in Jesus' name. Some of you are gonna pray for coworkers who are sick and they're gonna be healed in Jesus' name. I believe in Jesus' name. There's gonna be some of you who pray for lost sons and daughters to come home, and they'll come home in Jesus' name. I'm praying for some of you to share your story of the gospel and it be so convincing to someone that they accept Christ because of your testimony three weeks later in the baptismal tank and you're in the third row going, wah, that's so amazing. And my hope, my hope is in the story of the book of Acts. And my hope, my hope is in the story of the book of Acts is literally just this. It's God using ordinary people full of the Holy Spirit to do extraordinary things. And I want to stir your hunger.

I'm not gonna answer all your questions in one service. I can't, I'm not that good. In fact, all I want you to do this week is in your alone time, in your mental free space, I want you to pray this prayer. Come Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit. Like, for the engineer in the room, what would it look like to pray, come Holy Spirit? For the welder in the room, come Holy Spirit. For the teacher in the room, come Holy Spirit. For the mom in the room, come Holy Spirit. For the dad in the room, come Holy Spirit. And when we begin to pray this prayer, can I tell you that God will animate your life through the power of the Holy Spirit to be His witness, to create something so much bigger than your own life that you get to participate in literally the renewal of the world. Like, what? He trusted me with that? If you're here this morning and you're outside of the faith, you're not a Christian. Or you pretend to be a Christian, but in your heart, you know you're not. I'm gonna pray the Holy Spirit meets you now in about three minutes. The Scripture's full of suddenlies and suddenly and suddenly.

This is a suddenly moment for some of you. I wanna invite you into the faith by receiving Jesus Christ as Lord of your life because you cannot have access to the Spirit until you first accept Jesus. He is the door. And a life full of the Spirit is wild, man, in a good way. It's fun. It's amazing. So with every head bowed and every eye closed, if you're here in the room and you are outside of the faith and you need Jesus, and today you wanna receive Him as Lord, we're not gonna spend a long time here because I believe that the Lord is already working on you. And so on the count of three, if you're here and you wanna confess Him as Lord, on the count of three, lift your hand. One. two, three.
