Miracle In The Making | The Ask | Charlotte Gambill

Morning, good morning. Good to be with you all. Come on, let's jump to our feet all across the house. I know you just sat down, but you know me, I like to stand you all the way back up again. So good to be home. This is home away from home for us. And many of you, I am now just a part of the family. Some of you are like, who is this strange woman with a strange voice? I speak English. You speak a version of my language. We're all good. It's an honor to be here, especially today to kick off this series, which I will get to in a moment. The series is called Miracle in the Making. You know, right now in this room, we're in the presence of the miracle maker. Sometimes we forget that. You know, I was challenging my own life. A few weeks ago, I was in a service much like this, and I was just in the worship, just like we were a moment ago, and just had this thought. I thought to myself, what if Jesus literally walked down the aisle in the next few moments? Thought to myself, how would I be different than I am right now? Like, would my posture change? Would my expectation lift? Would what I was thinking about suddenly not seem to matter anymore, and I would suddenly begin to think about something completely different? Would my issue not even be an issue? Would my hurt or my anger not be hurt or anger? Because I'm just aware that Jesus just walked in the room. When I read my Bible, you read any story around the time of Jesus, you'll read when ever he went to a location, word would spread, Jesus is in town. And at that announcement, people literally would drop everything. Didn't matter what they were doing, doesn't matter what was going on, they would do whatever they had to do because they got the news, Jesus is in town. And so they would leave their home and they would leave their family. There was a one woman that was sick, bound over for 12 years with an issue of blood. She didn't care. She heard Jesus was in town and somehow she got that bent over body and crawled through a crowd just because she knew if I could just get near him. Sinners climb trees just to get a glimpse. People brought to him their most expensive jar of alabaster to break in his presence. And I thought, wow, every time we gather, he's in the room. Somehow we stopped climbing trees. Somehow we stopped breaking jars. Somehow we're not now willing to crawl. And I just think, as you get ready to go into a series all about putting a miracle into the making, I think the posture should be that we remind ourselves that we are a testimony of the miracles that God can do and that God has made in our own lives. And if he can do what he's done thus far in our lives, how much more can he do in our lives and the lives of others? And so I'm saying all this because we're about to go into a topic, into a conversation,

into the word about living a generous life. And whenever we touch on a subject like this, our natural mind can try and overwhelm our supernatural. And all of our thoughts and needs in the natural can try and overwhelm what God is requiring from us in the spiritual. And I just want to remind you, whatever you hear today, whatever God nudges in you today, he's nudging it in you because he is more than able. He's nudging it in you because he's the God of the impossible. He's nudging it in you because some of you desperately need a miracle, but God wants to do a miracle not just for you. So God, we thank you for your Word. And we adjust our posture right now. God, for some of us, we've been doing this for decades. I pray we would never get familiar for the fact that you're in the room, that what we're doing right now is sacred and it is holy. And God, I pray as this series begins today, something would begin in us, an awakening, a new awareness, a new willingness in the house, God. As we realize that God, you wanna put a miracle in the making through us today. God, I pray as always that I would get out of the way. Holy Spirit, would you have your way in Jesus' name. Amen and amen. You may take your seats. So as I said, I am honored to be entrusted by your pastors, our dear friends, Pastor Jeremy and Jen, to begin this series, Miracle in the Making. As you get ready in the next couple of weeks to give in that legacy miracle offering that is an annual part of what you do here at City First. And I was just thinking about it and I just even wanted to say today, I know y'all are from Rockford and I don't know if you get out much beyond Rockford. I'm not sure how much you've traveled

and seen the church around the world, but can I just let you know the annual giving legacy offering that you guys do every year. You just need to know that is what happens in churches everywhere. All across the globe, churches do exactly what you're doing every year. They have an annual above and beyond giving offering to take care of things that are not just the day-to-day necessary needs and necessary requirements of the church, but they're above and beyond. They're investment into the future. They're giving into areas beyond our own wants and needs. And this is something that happens everywhere in case you thought it just happens here. And as someone that's pastored with my husband for many, many years, we would take our own church back in England into giving legacy offerings just like you are being taken into. And we would lead our congregation just like we're doing today into that preparing and getting ready to sacrificially give. And I know as I was saying it as a pastor in England that our own church sometimes would struggle, well, why do we do this? And why is it so necessary? And I just had to remind our church,

and I wanna remind you today, this place here, right here where you're sat, the chair that you are sat on right now, it's not just a chair. This is not just another room. This place, this space is something different. It's what changed many of your lives. When you walked into this place, you were not as put together as you are right now. When you came here, some of you were lost and you were desperate. Some of you were wrapped up in addictions. Some of you are in a lifestyle that was dogged and plagued by sin and shame and guilt. Some of you, your marriage was at rock bottom. Some of your kids were far from God. Some of you felt like you had no dream or hope for your future. And somehow you ended up in this room, sat on these chairs, and something changed in your life forever. When we give into a house like this, we're not just giving into something that is just kind of seats and building and walls and microphones. We're giving into a place where lives can be built. This house built you. The local church built me. It was the local church where I discovered my purpose and my calling.

It was the local church where I met my husband. It was a local church where we grew and we built our family, where we brought our babies onto a platform much like this and had them dedicated to God. It was a local church where I got to baptise my own children in the water, like some will get baptised next Sunday. It was a local church where people prayed over us when we couldn't have children and we were barren. It's a local church where someone helped us out and invited us into their home and sat us down and showed us the way more perfectly and had a converse. It's a local church where I got corrected in my attitude and challenged in my mindset. It's a local church where I got an idea that was bigger than the community in which I lived. It's a local church where I learned about living a righteous life, not like the life of the friends that I had at college and university. This house, the local church built my house in the natural and in the spiritual. So when we take an annual offering to give to the house that built us, we're saying we want the same house to build someone else. We want it to be here for a long time beyond me. And so I wanna encourage you today as you get ready to give above and beyond that it is part not just of a privilege

that is extended to us. to us, but I believe it's a duty. I believe it's a responsibility before God to keep the miracle in the making. You know, I don't get it. I really don't. If I was God, I think I would do things very differently. So it's a good job I'm not God. But I often say, God, really, like, like why would you rely on us so much? We're not that great. We don't always show up. We're not that good to our word. We're not that good sometimes at following through with what you asked us to do. God, I would bypass all of us and just divinely do what you need to do and don't risk it on us because we're not always gonna show up in the way that we should. I don't know why God chooses to use us. We are like heaven's chosen delivery system. Not crazy. Like, we're like heaven's UPS. He's like, I have something and I need to get it on earth and I'm gonna give it to you and it's gotta go through you to them. I'm like, God, I don't know. There's some dodgy delivery people in your house. Like you give stuff to them

and it doesn't go from them to someone else. It stays on the shelf in their house, in their life. And you gotta realise God's trying to get things to us so they can get things through us. I realised a long time ago, I have had the honour, you have had the honour of seeing miracles. But there's something better than seeing a miracle. And what I've realised is better than seeing a miracle is being a part of a miracle. And when we get ready to give in the way that you're gonna give in a few weeks, you say, I don't just wanna see it, I wanna be it. I don't just wanna be a recipient, I wanna be a delivery system. I don't just want God you to give me stuff, I wanna be able to deliver stuff. I wanna be a conduit. The Bible says the world of the generous gets larger and larger. In other words, when you're a good UPS delivery person, God gives you more packages for you to deliver. He's like, I trust this one. I know this one's gonna go where I need it to go. I'm not so sure about that one, but this one's good, right? God's like, I need good delivery and I'm praying and believing with the team here, with the leadership here, that we're gonna put some miracles into motion in the next few weeks. I love the way that God works,

though I don't understand it. God uses us in our humanity to deliver divinity. He borrows from us things that we don't see really that much value in. But God's like, if you give it to me, I'm gonna take it to a whole nother level. From the beginning of Jesus's story, God decided that Jesus himself would come and be delivered in a borrowed womb. Then he would be put in a borrowed stable, in a borrowed manger. Jesus all through his ministry would borrow boats and borrow tables and borrow rooms to meet in. Even at the end of his life, Jesus is laid in a borrowed tomb. He took humanity's practical things and put divinity on the inside of it. And it's no different today. God is still in the business of borrowing rooms and tables and boats. And he's still in the business saying, I want what you have to put something divine on the inside of it to help change the environment around it. I don't get it, but it's the way that God works. And so I want to, for the next few moments, take you to a miracle in the making story that only happens because someone is willing to lend to the Lord,

what they don't even realise the Lord actually needs to borrow from their life. And there's a journey in this story that I believe over the next few weeks, God wants to take all of you on this journey once again, as you get ready to lend to the Lord something to put a miracle into motion. The story is in Matthew 21. It's the story that is the miracle of Jesus making a triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He's gonna ride into Jerusalem and it's a huge moment in history for on this day, Jesus is going to make a public declaration about who He is. He is going to let everybody know, I am the coming King. I am the Messiah that was spoken of. I am the one that is the reason why you are going to have hope for your future. He was making a public declaration of who he was. This was going to be a fulfilment of prophecy. It was going to be a history marking moment. And this triumphal entry that we often read about and we are aware of. I want to give you the backstory of how this miracle was put in the making. God could have done this any way he chose. He could have had literal angels drop out of the sky blowing trumpets. He could have had a royal robe walkway made for Jesus to walk on down. He could have done it any way he chose. But the incredible way divinity works is that in order for this miracle to be put in the making, it began with Jesus asking to borrow something

from someone that was not expecting to have to lend to the Lord. In Matthew 21, the story begins to play out. Jesus has gathered his team. He's about to do the triumphal entry, but he's outside of the city. And as he's on the outskirts of the city, he gives this instruction to his team. He tells him in Matthew 21, Go to the village ahead of you. And at once you will find a donkey tied there with a colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. I don't know whether you pause when you read your Bible and think about what you just read, but I recommend you do it because it's hilarious what the Bible tells us about the way that God acts. Jesus is about to make a triumphal entry. But before he does it, God's given him an instruction. Jesus has intel. He has intel about things that you don't think God is even concerned to have intel about. The intel Jesus has on this particular day is he knows who owns a donkey, who has a donkey and a colt. He also knows where they are, in whom's yard they are, that they're tied up in this particular location. And so God is letting Jesus know your instruction is to send your team and basically, I mean, really you can dress it up, but basically go steal the donkey and the colt from this dude's house that has no idea you're coming. That is what is going on right now. I mean, I feel awkward on so many levels. I feel awkward for the disciples. Can we just have a little empathy moment for leadership? Like sometimes you'll hear leaders get up here and say, hey, we need you to give. Hey, we really, I know we just really need you to help us out. I think sometimes when we sit there, we think, well, it's so easy for you to ask.

No, it is not easy. I don't think it was easy for the disciples to walk up to some random man's house, begin untying, it's like, it's like Pastor Jeremy coming to your house this afternoon, walking into your kitchen, opening the drawer that we all have in our homes with all the keys in it and pulling out your truck keys and not just your truck keys, your old truck keys, but your new car keys too. And just saying, hey, the Lord, you know, the Lord told me to come get your donkey and your colt. You'd be like, what in the heck do you think you're doing? You'd be calling the police. You'd be like, I don't think so. The Lord didn't tell me. The Lord didn't tell this guy either. He just sent the boys round to the house to collect the donkey and get the colt. Because the Lord was about to involve this family that had no idea about what was going on in the making of a miracle that we're still talking about today. It was just a donkey. Let me just tell you right now, you ain't fooling Jesus any of the time. He knows you got stuff. He doesn't just know you got stuff. He knows what stuff you have. He doesn't just know the stuff that you tell people you have. He knows the stuff you don't even tell your wife you have. Hello. Jesus is like, I know about your donkey. I don't know about your colt. I know about your offering that you give on Sunday. And I know about the water money in your drawer that you ain't given on Sunday. I know about it all. The truth is, it all belongs to him.

And so this journey of giving for this man and for us, it begins with an ask. That's what it began with. I'm coming to ask. for your donkey. And I'm not just asking for your donkey, I'm asking for your colt. See, the donkey was well used. The donkey was worn in. The donkey had a lot of miles on the clock like your old truck, right? You've used that thing, you've driven that thing. I mean, that thing has hauled stuff back and forth. It is worn out. I mean, you got your use out of it. Sometimes we don't mind that Jesus wants our donkey, because we've used it pretty much every single day. We got our wear out of it. The tires are bald, you know, the transition's not great. You know, like it smells. It's kind of a little torn and tatty. Like, all right, Jesus, you can have my donkey. I guess I'll give you my donkey. He's like, appreciate the fact you wanna give me a donkey, but I also want the colt. You're like, wait a minute, I haven't ridden the colt yet. I mean, the colt had never been, as it were, taken for a drive. The colt had never actually had anyone sit on its back. The colt had never actually done any mileage. I mean, the colt was brand new.

He'd not got back his investment yet on the colt, but Jesus is like, yeah, I know you expect me to ask for the donkey, but I want the colt too. So there's an ask, and the disciples are the one that have to go and let this man know, we're coming to take your donkey, and over these next few weeks, God's gonna make an ask of you. He knows what you have, I don't know what you have. So it's not down to me when Pastor Jess stands up here and says, I want you to give, and this little thought comes in the back of your mind that you're trying to rebuke and say it's the devil. It's probably because God knows what you got. But God's not trying to get it from you. He's trying to involve you in something. So the ask comes, so here's the second part that you need to know about, and God's good with it, by the way, because the second part is after there's been the ask, you have a question, I have a question. Why me? Why my donkey? Why my colt? Why now? Why in December? Why, why, why? We have questions, it's okay. It's okay to have a question. In fact, Jesus even tells the disciples,

there may be a question as you try and steal the donkey. So in Matthew, it tells us that there's this question that comes as they go and untie the donkey. In fact, in Luke 19, it puts it this way in verse 32. It says, they were sent ahead and found, just as he had told them, the donkey and the colt, and as they were untying the colt, its owners asked, hey, what are you doing with my donkey? Why are you untying my colt? Jesus already knew there was going to be a question. Listen, I have, through seasons of my life, questioned what I felt God is asking from me. Why? It feels a lot. It's a stretch. I don't know if I can do it. I remember when I was a student. I'm like, God, I'm a student. Don't you know students are poor? Don't you know we don't have much? Don't you know we're looking for people to give us a handout, not us to put our hand in? Like, don't you know this is a season when you don't ask me to give? I had questions until you asked the question. God can't give you the revelation. So feel free to ask. Don't ask your stingy friends because your stingy friends will say, I won't give my donkey, definitely won't give my colt.

Don't ask your tight buddies that don't spend money on no one. They're not the right circle of counsel. Ask God. In fact, the disciples, Jesus said, look, when they ask you, just tell them, I have an answer for them. I have an answer why I'm involved in them. See, when you get a revelation of why God's asking you, it liberates so much generosity from you. When I realised God is asking me to give because He's trying to get things to me, not things from me, it changed my life. When I realised that He wants me to be a part of something that is a miracle, it changed my life. No longer did I need to justify or have someone justify. I realised, man, I know now what God's trying to do through me. Before, I've just seen a miracle, but now He's asking me, do I wanna be part of a miracle? And so when you ask your question, God has an answer. Matthew 21, Jesus says, verse three. So if they ask you, if anyone says anything to you, Here's the answer, tell them the Lord has need of them. And then when they hear that answer, they're gonna send them right on their way. When they have a revelation of who's asking, they're gonna release some things. When they understand that it's God

that actually is asking for the donkey and the call, not the disciples that are just asking for the donkey and the call, they're gonna realise there's something going on here that's beyond what my human mind is comprehending in this moment. And you might say, well, that's a weird statement. The Lord has need, God doesn't need. You're right, God doesn't need. He's not like, I'm short 50 bucks, could you loan me? That's not God. God's not short of money. He's not short of resources. But what he's trying to do is involve you in something way beyond what your mind can understand. The Lord has need of including you in something that happened before you even took a breath. Listen to this, this is why the Lord had need of the donkey. There was a prophecy in Zechariah 9 verse 9. This is going back years and years before this moment. This is what God said through His prophet. This is how it would happen. He said, The king comes to you righteous and victorious. And how does he come? Lowly and riding on a donkey on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Whoa, mind blown. Wait a minute, what did I just read? What you just read is that this dude's donkey

is part of something that was prophesied years earlier, that this was the assigned time for this man to untie a donkey that Jesus would sit on the back of, that would announce to a world that was waiting that the Messiah is here, that the King has come. This was not just borrowing a donkey, this was the fulfilment of a prophecy. Okay, let me make it even more clear in case I'm not being clear, which I don't think I'm not being clear, but I'll just go one step further. I called Pastor Jeremy this week as I was writing this message for you today. I said, Pastor Jeremy, I said, can you tell me are there any prophecies over your house that maybe were spoken years earlier? Can you tell me if there was any words that were put into the atmosphere years earlier that maybe I should be aware of? He said, well, yes, there is one moment that is marked in history. It was in the 1960s, and there was a man called Eugene Whitcomb who knelt in what was just a cornfield on a corner of an intersection of roads. He knelt down in a cornfield, and he began to pray, and he had a prophecy. And as he knelt on his knees,

he said, Oh God, that something would be built here that would reach generations. He began to prophesy all the way back then that there will be a house here, and it will be filled with people that will find Christ here, that young people will flood to altars here, that generations will find their truth here. And so when you see this picture, church, when you see this picture, you don't know these people. You don't know who they are. They were once you in this room. I remember when these chairs were not as cool looking as they are now. There used to be pink pews. I remember sitting on the pink pews. Those people in that picture, years ago were in this room on pink pews. And someone got up and said, hey, we need to give so that we can build a children's wing. Hey, we need to borrow your donkey so we can extend what we're doing. Hey, could you untie your coat? Because I think there's a whole group of young people coming that are gonna want to be trained in the Gospel at a leadership academy. I wonder if someone could bring a coat next Sunday

so we can put in motion a miracle that I don't know when we'll see the fullness of it, but I just know right now it's our turn. And I don't know who these people were, but one Sunday they brought their donkey and another one brought their coat and they brought them into the house of God. And they said, I know I could use them, but I think the Lord has need of them. And that prophecy all the way back in the 1960s is what you're. all sat in the reality of today. This is a fulfilment of what God said. And so when God asked the question, when there's the ask, I'm coming for your donkey, I'm asking for your call. He's not just asking. He's fulfilling the word that is spoken. This is your time. This is your turf. This is your turn. It is your time to do what those people did back then. And every single year, we get to play a part in the continuation of the miracle. But if you don't bring your donkey and you don't bring your call and you don't bring your offering, then the miracle slows down. Then what we're supposed to fulfil gets transferred to another generation

who's not just having to bring their donkey but having to make up for the fact that you didn't bring yours. Wow. You might not have paid for the seat you're sat on, but somebody did. Pastor Jeremy's gonna make clear to you over the coming weeks, probably next week, mention in more detail where some of this finance needs to go. But because I wanna do the right job and because I'm in prayer for you as a house, I already lend in about some of the things that need to be taken care of. And here's what I know about the way we're wired. Some of us are like, wow, if it's for the orphans, if it's for the poor, I'm all in. And that's important. But can I tell you what also is important? Is making sure that these bricks and mortar are still here in a few years time. You know what also is important? Is that we have air conditioning so that you don't die in the summer. And I know we laugh, but I don't know if you know that this building has ridiculous amount of requirements for air conditioning. And I don't know if you know how much it is to replace systems like that that have been hanging on by a thread for years.

I don't know if you understand that because we just live in houses and our conditioning doesn't look like the one that's on here. These things are gigantic. But if they go down, I don't know why you think that gets taken care of. But when you're here in the summer, sweating it out, you're gonna be like, wow, I wish someone had untied a donkey because I'm dying right now. I wish someone had untied a colt because I can't breathe right now. And listen, I have literally not as much skin in this game as you do because I don't live here. I will not be sweating it out in the worship in the summer. Your will. Sometimes we don't understand that's what it takes so that the house that we're sat in is still here for the next people to sit in it. There's those needs that are out there, but there's those needs that are in here. And we're all responsible for putting the miracle in the making so that generations can come and receive what we have received. This passage of Scripture ends in such a beautiful picture of what I believe all of this is about. When Jesus asked to borrow the tomb, I'll borrow. The cradle, I'll borrow. The stable, I'll borrow.

The boat, it was always about this. Matthew 21 reads this way. He says, so they took the donkey and all of this was done to fulfil what was spoken. See your King comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey on a colt and the foal of a donkey. And so then the disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt. They placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to now sit on. And a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road while others cut branches from the trees because generosity is infectious. It started with a donkey, but now everyone's getting involved. And then the crowd went ahead of him. And those that followed shouted, Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven. Watch this verse 10. And when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, who is this? It began way back here through the mouth of a prophet recorded in passages of Scripture that this day would happen. But for an order for that miracle to be put in the making,

it required the ask. take your donkey can I borrow your colt because I want to put on it Jesus and when Jesus gets on your donkey it's no longer just a donkey it's no longer just an offering it's no longer just a check it's no longer just a sacrifice when I put Jesus on the back of your contribution he goes on before us and ahead of us and he begins to stir the whole city and we are here you are here I hope you're here I hope you don't just live to have an experience on Sunday and live the rest of your life however you choose through Monday I hope you understand this is your time to stir a city that is going to hell you know people I know people there's a location right now that they are bound to and it is not a good one they don't know Jesus as their Lord and Savior some of you I'm talking about your children and your children's children that yet to know salvation yet to know transformation don't give up hope keep loaning your donkey listen this is what I realized sometimes the people you desperately want to find Jesus you don't get to show them Jesus but someone else's donkey becomes the vehicle to take them to Jesus when we all play our part everybody is reached this house the way it's committed to young people training them sending them out that's saying we're not keeping it all here we got to go reach some more people we've got to go help some more people and I just want to put before you today just like Nancy said in her video she felt God tap her on the shoulder I'm just asking for you to be aware of the tap the tap will lead to an ask the ask will lead to your question your question I pray will lead to your revelation and your revelation therefore will bring your call bring your donkey so that we can carry on the legacy that will stir a city it's all across the house today time's gone I want us to stand to our feet we you are a miracle in the making in something as ordinary as our stuff becomes extraordinary when the Savior gets on it and I think this is a year where God's going to push some of you beyond where you normally would go normally you volunteer the donkey but you keep the cult to yourself and I don't know about you but I sense in my spirit time is getting short

and he's coming back things are stirring and things are changing and the world is searching and the church needs to rise up and the way we rise up is not just by showing up but actually contributing to the miracle that's in motion so Holy Spirit we thank you God first of all we just take a moment and we thank you for those that went before us for us that gave so generously that opened a way for us to find you to find a place to call home to find community and family to find hope and belonging God I thank you for the faithfulness that is represented by what we're standing in even today and God as we get ready to give in the weeks ahead God would you tap us on the shoulder would you awaken us in the night would you speak to us about the things that you want to see us release into your kingdom God I pray over this offering in the coming weeks it would be such a miracle in the making that the testimony will be look what the Lord has done it is above and beyond what we could ask think or imagine God you are able if we are willing as eyes are closed all across the room maybe you're here today and the reason you're here today is because someone prayed years ago that you would find your way into a place like this they gave so you'd have a chair to sit on and there'd be an auditorium in which you could receive a word because they knew that there needed to be a building built so that people could come into this place and find Christ and maybe you're here today and you are lost or maybe you're here today and you are far from Christ and today this is the miracle in making for you it is a moment for you to say I don't want to live on my own ways anymore I want God as my Lord I want him as my king if that's you today as eyes are closed and you're saying I need God I gotta put him first again just stick your hand it right where you are so many hands just stick that hand on your heart right where you are hand on your heart right where you are God you see every hand right now you came you sent your son just for them you put a miracle in motion when you sent your only son from heaven to die a brutal death on earth and God I pray today as every heart accepts you as Lord and Savior as they lay down their sin their shame their guilt and God they pick up and receive your grace and mercy God I pray for a
