Miracle In The Making | Contagious Generosity | Pastor Jeremy DeWeerdt

All right, hello, City First, how are you guys doing today? So glad that you are in church. And can you believe it? It's actually Thanksgiving week. It's turkey time, all right? How many of you excited about Thanksgiving? All right, how many of you are in charge of cooking the turkey? You are responsible for that very important job. That's awesome. I told Jen that I would be in charge of cooking the turkey this year, and she said, great. Just don't preach to it, because it'll already be dry enough. My kids would say that's a dad joke, and I'm here to just tell you I am proud of that joke. Well, I'll say this. We're in this series called Miracle in the Making, Miracle in the Making. And we are preparing our hearts and prayerfully focusing our topic of generosity for the end of year miracle offering on December 7 and 14. And this is something that's a big thing, because every year we do this, and every year I explain it. So for those of you who've been a part of City First for years, you've heard me say this before, but there's always new people. So I want to explain what it is. And every single December, we give our first and best gift of the Christmas season to God through his church. And what that does is that legacy end of year

miracle offering helps fund many different things throughout the next year. Like for example, this offering will help fund our compassion ministries, our food distribution. Like even this last Tuesday, we gave out enough food to feed 750 families just on Tuesday. And that is in part due to last year's end of year miracle offering. Things like empowerment center efforts, or church planting, or relief efforts. You know, if there's a tornado, a hurricane, usually we are able to give towards that immediately and bring hygiene kits right to the location ASAP, again, because of this end of year offering. Or even things like what you just heard in the announcement video, Christmas presents for children who normally would not have a Christmas otherwise. It all goes towards these very important needs. And it's way more than that, but it really is a miracle, a miracle in the making. And when we all come together and we say, God, we're going to be generous and we're gonna give, God does miracles. And it provides salvation, it provides help, it provides hope to literally tens of thousands of people in the next 365 days. But it also is a miracle in our heart. It does something, it shifts something. It makes it so that we understand that the blessing

that we've been given is not just for selfish reasons, but rather instead it's to also, part of it is to make a difference. So today I wanna talk about contagious generosity, contagious generosity. A lot of times things in life can become contagious. And when I say contagious, that immediately kind of gives a negative connotation, right? I remember a real story that took place with Jen and I back in 2011, it was December of 2011. We decided that we were gonna fly with little Paxton. He was at this point, our third child, two months old. He was two months old and he was born with Down syndrome. And so us three were gonna hop a plane and fly to New York. And I was gonna visit a church planter in New York that came out of our church and I was gonna visit him. And then on top of that, we were gonna visit another couple that lived in Manhattan who also had a child with special needs. And we were gonna kind of pick their brains and be like, hey, listen, help us out. We don't know what we're doing. So Jen and I went to O'Hare along with little Paxton early in the morning and we're gonna catch our flight. And it turned into one of those nightmare travel days. Some of you have had these, right? There were storms out east and it kept delaying our flight, delaying, finally it was canceled. They put us on another flight, delay, delay, delay, another cancellation.

I mean, it was a nightmare. We spent the entire day in the airport with a two month old, which was awesome. But anyway, we finally did get on our plane and it was towards evening. We flew to New York as we're making our descent into and our approach into LaGuardia Airport there. We actually ran into the storm that was delaying all the flights. And it was crazy. It was like terrible turbulence, like violent kind of turbulence. And it was the kind that you're literally hanging on to the armrest. People are screaming. It's like a movie. And as the pilot is trying to make this approach, he kept on having to pull back up because it wasn't safe to make the approach with all the wind shear and all the swirl. And we literally tried over and over again to land. And finally, it happened. Someone loudly lost their cookies. And it began to be like a symphony. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I mean, all over the plane. Like some of you are sympathetic vomitors. Oh, you're throwing up? I'll throw up too. Like that kind of thing.

That's what happened, literally. And it literally became contagious. And I'm having to cover my ears because there's so many people losing their lunch. And I'm like, oh, God, I don't want to lose my lunch. And so it became contagious. That's what we thought. We think of when it comes to the word contagious. We think of sickness. We think of contagious fear. We think of contagious negativity or whatever else. But I'm here. I want to recategorize that word today. And I want to categorize it in a positive way. Things can also positively become contagious. Like for example, when it comes to generosity and making a difference. When it comes to generosity and making a difference, the Bible even speaks of a moment in the Old Testament where there was a contagious generosity when God's people came together to build a tabernacle, kind of like a church, a tabernacle in the middle of the wilderness as they are going on their way to the promised land. We pick it up in Exodus chapter 35. It says, then Moses said to the whole community of Israel, this is what the Lord has commanded. Take a sacred offering for the Lord. Now, here's the thing. They wanted to create a space where

God could inhabit the praises of his people and that he would be glorified. Now, notice something here what the Bible says. Notice it says the offering would be sacred. Sacred, another word for that, is holy. Kind of another Bible term. What does that mean? Holy means to be set apart. So this offering was going to be sacred. It was going to be holy. It was going to be set apart from the rest of their spending, you could say. And I would just say we can learn from this. When we give, we're not just giving our money or our resources. When we give every week or we give in the end of year legacy miracle offering, it becomes set apart from the rest of our giving. It becomes holy in God's eyes. It becomes sacred, you could say. Like our money does a lot of things. Our money buys the clothes that you're wearing right now. Our money buys food. It buys gas. It buys cell phones. It buys streaming services. It buys all kinds of things, right? But the portion that we give to God through his church, that portion is holy. It's different.

It actually is worship. Like it's set apart from the money that you're putting towards Netflix or Chase Bank or taxes or Target. It's different. Whenever we give to God, it is holy, sacred and worship and worship becomes tangible, not just theoretical, tangible when we release what God has entrusted to us back to him. That's why when it's holy, sacred and worship, it has to be attached to our heart. It has to be from our heart. Worship must be from the heart. In fact, we see this in the story going back to Exodus chapter 35. Let those with generous hearts, not generous minds, not generous wallets, not generous even hands, but generous hearts present the following gifts to the Lord. And then Moses listed out different ways that they could give. The heart is so important in the process because let me just say this as your pastor, you should never give to City First Church because you're guilted into it, never. You should not give a dime to this church if you're guilted into it or if you're coerced or if you're arm twisted. We don't do it that way. But even if you were, if somebody were to do that, do not give.

In fact, you shouldn't give to anybody if you're coerced or arm twisted, all right? That's not really the heart of it. The Bible says it this way. Paul was talking in the New Testament. He says, you must each decide in your heart. Again, in your heart, how much to give, and don't give reluctantly or in response to what? Pressure, for God loves a person who gives cheerfully. If your heart isn't in it, your giving becomes a payment instead of a praise. Do you hear that? If your heart isn't in it, it's duty, it's not devotion. It's obligation, it's not an offering, and the gift loses its glory. God says it's holy, it's sacred. Have you ever received a Christmas present from someone that you know bought the present only because they had to, right? Like it was their duty, like they were just ticking the box when it came to the list. Their heart really wasn't in it, or even worse, this happened to me, where people have given me a gift, and when I opened it up, I saw the name of the person who gave me the gift on the present. They were re-gifting a gift to me. Oops.

How does it make you feel if someone gives you something only because they have to, or they're obligated not because they want to? When I give gifts, I think people who live up close to me would say this is true. I want to really think through, what would this person want? What would they need? I want the gift to be from my heart because when they receive it, my heart is a part of that gift. And in the same way, God wants our heart to be a part of this offering, not out of obligation, not because, oh, I just need to, not even because, oh, this gives me a tax advantage. It's because our heart is in it. In fact, going back to the story in Exodus chapter five, so the whole community of Israel left Moses and returned to their tents, all whose, listen, hearts were stirred and whose spirits were moved. Hearts were stirred, spirits were moved. Hearts were stirred, spirits were moved. What did they do? They came and brought their sacred offerings to the Lord. Everyone heard the invitation that Moses gave. God wants us to give an offering. And they heard the invitation to be generous

and a lot of them responded. Not all of them though. You see, when God invites, it becomes clear who's willing to move and who's content to watch, right? And God's goal is never equal amounts or equal offerings, but rather equal participation and equal sacrifice. That's his goal. It's like we could all be a part of this and we could all make a difference in Jesus's name. Years ago, I remember hearing a story out of our Champions Club ministry here at Spring Creek. And Champions Club, for those of you who know, that is our Sunday school. It's a whole wing, our Sunday school that is specifically designed with kids with special needs. And it's basically for kids with special needs that can go in there. It's a safe environment. And one of our champions, we call them champions, one of our champions, Gracie, her and her mom were getting ready to come here to Church's City first. And she was excited to come to Champions Club. And so she started to get Gracie, who had special needs, got all of her toys and all her stuffed animals and her little purse, and she's ready to go to church. And Gracie's mom is like, Gracie, we can't bring all that to church, okay? You can bring one thing.

And so Gracie decided to bring her little purse. And so they come to check into Champions Club. And as mom is checking in, she looks down and she sees that Gracie has unzipped her little purse and there's a whole wad of money in there, whole wad of cash. And she's like, where'd you get that? And so she kind of like, you know, gently says to Gracie, Gracie, why don't you let me hang on to your purse while we go to church? And Gracie's like, nope. And so mom was like, all right, it's fine, whatever. And so Gracie went into Champions Club. Mom came in this room to come to church service. And while Gracie was in Champions Club, Gracie asked one of our leaders in there if she could get an offering bucket. And the leader was kind of like, I don't know what to do because we don't take an offering in Champions Club. So she just went down, she found like a toy bucket that was a part of the toys there. And so she brought it up and put it on the table and said, hey, Gracie, there's the bucket. And then they went through the service and everything was great. After all the services, that same volunteer came back and was cleaning up the room and noticed inside of the bucket was a whole wad of cash, $30 and 43 cents. And she thought, well, maybe like a bunch of the kids gave or maybe some of the leaders even gave their offering

in there or whatever else. Well, later on, she finds out, no, that was all Gracie. Gracie gave all that. And so the volunteer went to our Champions Club coordinator and said, hey, this came and told the story from Gracie. And so on Monday morning, the Champions Club coordinator called Gracie's mom and said, hey, Gracie gave a lot of money. And I don't know if you know that or not, but we'll go ahead and put it in an envelope and we'll put it up at the front office. And you can swing by and come get it because it's probably not Gracie's money. And you know what? The mom said this. The mom goes, no, go ahead and keep it. Gracie loves giving money, whether it's her money or not. And she loves giving money to church, to City First. And I thought about that story and I thought, we can learn a lot from little Gracie. First of all, it's not our money. I know some of you are like going, I earned this. Well, you did earn it. But at the end of the day, it was God who gave it to you. God gave you everything you have, including me. Everything that I have is God's. It's all from him. He gave me the ability to even earn money. So it's all his and it's easier to give some away when it's not yours in the first place, right?

Another thing we can learn from Gracie is this, is that she was super excited to give somebody else's money away. And in the same way, we can become excited when we say, God, 100% of what you gave me, a small portion of it, I'm gonna give back to you. It is gonna be sacred, it's gonna be holy. It comes from the heart. And in the same way, Gracie gave from the heart, we wanna give from the heart. So why do we get excited about the legacy end of year miracle offering? Why do we even do this every year? Why do we even talk about it? Why do we ask people to stretch? Well, the answer is this, because we get to give to God and be a part of something that's bigger than us, bigger than anything you or I could do individually. Let me just give you a few statistics about what last year's end of year offering went towards. This is this like offering we took in December of 2024, a portion of it was able to fund these things. You're right, here it is, all right? Like we have a ministry around here called God Behind Bars. We have two physical locations, one in Dixon, Illinois, one in Hardy County, they are locations of City First. They gather on a weekly basis, like even watching this message right now. But on top of that, we are also streaming on what is called the Pando app,

and that goes to inmates all over the nation in correctional centers all over the nation. In other words, they watch City First services like right now all over the nation. So we had 885,760 views in 2025 from inmates, listen to this, over 677 prisons across the nation watched City First. And because of that, 1,206 documented salvations came from that. That's huge. What else in 2025? We had a backpack drive. And so you know what? In 2025, we were able to give away 2,700 backpacks full of school supplies in 18 schools across three states. We started years ago with one school, it grew to two. And all of a sudden we had a school start calling us and saying, we have students that have need and they don't have the ability to have a backpack or even school supplies. Can City First help? And little by little by little, we grew it now to 18 schools in 2026. I would like to see even more. How about food distributions? Just in this last year, we've given away over 108,000 pounds of food, even including last week, 108,000 pounds of food. That's equivalent of 90,317 meals that we were able to feed people

who have food insecurity this year alone. Then since 2020, and we actually started food distribution on a regular basis, guess what? We've given away over 3.6 million pounds of food, which is over 3,674,000 meals. That's what stuff like this offering goes towards. How about Empowerment Center? We started Empowerment Center efforts, and this year alone, 30 people have given their lives to Jesus through the Empowerment Center efforts. That is huge. And there's been 3,267 people. that had participated in our Empowerment Center efforts, whether it be block parties or our services or our youth and young adult outreaches. How about our family ministries? Just this year alone, 31,508 kids have checked in cumulatively at all of our locations just this year. Think about that, how many kids that is per week. And we've had 431 salvations in our kids' ministries alone. Kids saying, I wanna give my life to Jesus. Not including today, not including today's baptism, 293 youth and young adults that have been baptized in 2025 up until this point, not including today. I could talk about church planting, I could talk about crisis relief, I could talk about partnering with organizations to rescue women and children out of human trafficking

in places like Thailand and Indonesia and Mexico and places like that. I'm telling you, so much could be said. We just don't have the time. My point is this. Our hearts become excited and full of worship to God when we see the impact of our contagious generosity, a sacred offering. You see, something happens not only through us, but something is unlocked in us. Something happens in how we see the world, how we think about other people. When we give, God does a supernatural work inside of us. It's really interesting. And so I thought, who better to explain this than one of you, one of the families of City First who started to unlock generosity in their family and it's made all the difference. Let's go ahead and listen to this. Hi, I'm Shane Gillenwater and this is my wife, Kayla Gillenwater. And we have been at City First for the last seven years. Money for me was a status symbol. It made me feel important. As I started making more money and as we started having more money, we gave very inconsistently. A lot of times people talk about having a God-sized hole in your heart. I used everything, jewelry, money to fill it.

No matter how much money I had, I was still very empty. But really we did not put our trust in God. We put our trust in God with our finances. In October of 2024, our house burned down and everything that we've ever owned was gone. The next day, we started with nothing. God started showing up. Yup, God started showing up and God put people in our lives that helped us rebuild. I think that after that, it just felt more natural to be generous in general because it was people, but it was God using those people. I think losing everything made us realize what was important. I said, you know what, God, I'm all in. I trust you. And then all of a sudden it's been seven months of tithing. It's the easiest money spent every single month. We just want our children to also understand that God is more important than money. He always sees our middle schooler. She'll have like money left over from her lunch account, like on her Apple Pay. And so it'll be like $1.73 or like $2.06, but she's giving it every Sunday. We want them to have nice things and be taken care of, but that comes second. We have a different perspective of who God is. And we came to the realization that it's all God's anyways, and we're just giving to God what's already his.

Pretty awesome. I mean, I don't know how to explain it. Giving unlocks something. I was not always a giver. But once I became one, it unlocks something in my heart. It unlocks something in our hearts. I mean, you know, it makes us sit there and say, look what God has done for me, and look what God has done through me. You see, it makes an eternal difference. Like, you know, you buy in that sweater, that's what you get. That's not making an eternal difference. You paying taxes, that's not making an eternal difference. Even like the things that we always put our money into, which are important, they're not bad things and we gotta do it, but none of that goes with us. I never see a U-Haul behind a hearse. Instead, when we give to God's church and we together show the love of Jesus to the world and people's lives are changed, that makes an eternal difference. People literally end up in heaven for all eternity. And this is why God's people in the wilderness, it was said of them that they had hearts stirred and spirits moved and God built a place for all to find hope and to have relationship with him. Going back to our story, Exodus chapter 36, they went to Moses and reported, the people have given more than enough materials

to complete the job the Lord has commanded us to do. So Moses gave the command and this message was sent throughout the camp, men, women, don't prepare any more gifts for the sanctuary. We have enough. So the people stopped bringing their sacred offerings, their contributions were more than enough to complete the whole project. You know what I noticed? Is that when generosity becomes contagious, when it really becomes contagious, the vision becomes a reality and lives are changed. Like when everybody says, I'm in, it's different levels of giving, but we're all in, it's 100% participation. When that happens, the vision gets accomplished. So you say, what is the vision for 2025's legacy end of year miracle offering? I'm glad you asked, I'm gonna close with this. On December 7th and December 14th, we're going to receive an over and above offering each week. Why do we do it both weeks? I actually had you as a congregation many years ago, write in, many of you write in or talk to me in the hallway and you wanted it not just one date because of where pay periods land. You said, could you give us kind of a range? And I'm like, absolutely. So in the 7th, the 14th, you can even start giving now if you want to.

But what we're gonna do is we're gonna give an over and above offering. That means over and above what we normally give. And this is the 2026 vision. What we do next month is gonna impact the next 365 days and here it is. We wanna see a 20% increase in our compassion efforts. Now that's a big bucket. There's a lot of things we do with compassion, all right? But we wanna see a 20% increase. We wanna see a 20% increase in funding local, national and world missions efforts. You know, in other words, cost of living is up. Well, it's up around the world. And some of our missionaries have actually like emailed me and said, you know what? If there's anything more because their cost of living is up. So we wanna increase our giving. We wanna increase our food distribution. There's a lot of food insecurity right now. And you know, there are people that, I love it. When the whole snap thing was maybe going away last month, a bunch of the media outlets contacted City First and said, we know you do something in the community. What are you guys gonna do? Will you be able to up your game? I love the fact that they called us. Do you understand that? Like just the very fact that they called and said,

are you guys gonna be able to do more? That shows that we're being light in our community. So we wanna increase food distribution in the name of Jesus. We wanna establish a God Behind Bars physical location in Wisconsin. That's another thing. We have Dixon, we have Hardy, and now we want Wisconsin. We also wanna establish a brand new young adult weekly service starting in January right here at this location. Obviously, we've got a lot of young adults that are coming. And they come on Sunday mornings. We wanna provide for them something midweek that they can do, and that costs money. We wanna also, we wanna establish a physical empowerment center, which obviously, to buy a building, that's a lot of money. But we wanna be able to do that. We've been looking at buildings. We're getting, you know, we feel like we're narrowing down. And so in 2026, we wanna buy a building and be able to have a physical empowerment center. We also need to fund much needed facilities improvement right here. Like not only are we making an outreach out there and around the world, but ladies and gentlemen, this place gets a lot of wear and tear because thousands and thousands of people are using it every single week.

So one of the things, Charlotte mentioned it last week. She kinda let the cat out of the bag. But you know, we need new air conditioning units because I don't know how many of you were here this summer. It got a little hot. You know, there was that one June 22nd. specifically, there are five units that are like the size of like Volkswagen bugs or ambulances that like are on the roof here and in rooms and all five of them air conditioning us. Four of them decided to die in one week, literally. June 22nd. I almost got up here and it was so hot in here. I think it was like 86, 87 degrees in the auditorium. I think I almost decided that we were going to like it was so hot, right? If we don't fix these, if we don't replace these, actually they need to be replaced. They were put in in 1988. So they've lived a good life. All right. They need to put out the pasture. Um, we need to replace them. That's a lot of money. Um, also foyer carpeting. You know what? I figured up well over a million people have come in and out of our foyer in the last 20 plus years, actually it was 2003 that carpet was put in. It's time to replace the carpet. All right. Bathrooms need to be updated. The total giving just for this location. I'm speaking just this location. Cape Coral has their own goals. Janesville has their own goals. They're also contributing into the missions efforts and empowerment center and God behind bars and food distribution. But just for this location alone, our goal for our end of year offering is $2 million. Now I know some of you are like going, that's a lot of money. It is for you and I individually is a lot of money, but for all of us together, it's not a lot of money. And to God, that's not a lot of money at all. I'm just saying if everyone prays and puts their heart into it and generosity becomes contagious, we're going to meet and probably even exceed that goal and be able to do so much for God's kingdom in 2026 that there will literally be tens of thousands of people that are reached with the you feel it. Like every service is getting more full. More people are being baptized. Like even today, over a hundred people have signed up for baptism. I mean, come on guys, our parking lots are getting to be full. I apologize for that. There's only so much we can do. You know, there's only so many entrances and exits. So thank you for your patience, but you know what? Our parking lots are getting full. God is growing his church. What a time

to double down in our generosity and accelerate the vision of what God is doing. In fact, it says in second Chronicles, it says this, the house, God's house I am building has to be the best for God is the best. What has he done for you? What has he done for me on December 7th and 14th? Let's come with hearts that are in our gift, that are sacred gifts, holy gifts, set apart gifts, different than Netflix, different than Target, different than Walmart, different than paying taxes, different than, instead God, we are going to give in such a way that all eternity is impacted. And so as we close, I have two minutes and let me just ask you to reach in the seat back in front of you and everybody take one of these little bookmarks in your hand and you can keep this. And if you're watching online, there's a little link there that you can go to. All right. But on the back of this, I made this so it's super simple. So this is how Jen and I do it. And I thought we just need to make it really simple so we understand how do we determine what we're to give? Well, I can't tell you and the person sitting next to you can't tell you unless they're your spouse. But you know, no one can tell you it has to be God. So that's why number one, you got to pray. You got to pray about it. This isn't pressure. No, I'm not going to know whether or not you give or how much you give. It's not about that. It's not arm twisting. It's praying saying, God, with everything that you've blessed me with, what can I give to you and your kingdom work? With everything you've given to me, what can I give? And you pray about it. And then you got to plan because leading up to December 7th and 14th, maybe between now and then, maybe you're going, you know what? I'm going to maybe not buy as many lattes and maybe I'm going to hold off on X and whatever it is, you know, you fill in the blank or whatever. I got to save. or maybe some of you, it's like, you know what, I gotta cash in some stocks, or I gotta, whatever it is that you gotta do, like, you gotta plan. Does that make sense? And then the third one, you commit. You say, okay, I'm gonna do this. Now, I'm gonna tell you how Jen and I do it. It happens all the time. You're gonna get two numbers.

You're gonna get a safe number, and you're gonna get one that requires faith. And I would just encourage you to do like Jen and I do and step into the one with faith. Stretch a little bit. In fact, I'll be very honest with you, many times it's Jen who gets the bigger number than me. And we always go with her number. And the reason why is, I guess she hears from God better than I do. No, it's because, you know what, together, especially if you're a person that you're in a relationship, sometimes one of you is a little bit more generous than the other one, and I'm pretty generous, but you know what, she's off the charts. And so we always go with her number. And so what is it? You commit, and then lastly, you give. On December 7th and 14th. Take this little thing with you, pray over it, and pray that God gives you the amount that you're to give. And then just go with whatever it is that he says. Because God's not trying to get something from you, he really is trying to do something in you. This end of your offering does more many times in us than anybody else. So let's bow our heads and let's pray. Heavenly Father, I pray that as we process

over the next couple of weeks here, as we pray to you, as we plan, as we commit, and eventually we give, God, I ask that you would just move in our hearts and move in your church. Lord, I pray that we would lean into stretching and giving, realizing it's the only thing, people are the only thing that we can bring with us to heaven. Can't bring anything else. So God, the most important thing that we can do is reach people for you. God, I pray through our generosity and our faithful giving next month, I pray that God, you would expand City First Church to way bigger impact than even what it is. I pray more people by the thousands would come, that more people would be fed, more children would be rescued out of trafficking. I pray that more missionaries would be funded. I pray that the gospel would go to unreached places. I pray the Empowerment Center would become established and become a force for good in the neighborhoods. Lord, I pray that you would do miraculously above anything we could ever imagine. Lord, we love you. We thank you in Jesus' name. And everybody said, amen, amen. Come on, let's give God praise, can we? What an amazing day together.

What a powerful message, Pastor Jer. We're excited about what God's gonna do through Legacy and our miracle offering in 2026. And if you're watching and you're excited, but you actually are sitting there, I've never made the decision to follow Jesus and to go on that journey. You can do that right now. I wanna give you the opportunity if you're watching, if you've never made that decision, to pray a prayer with me. It's a simple prayer, but it's a heartfelt prayer that just says, Lord, I give you my life, I trust you, I make you the leader and forgiver of my life, and I want to live for you. And so if you wanna make the decision, go ahead, bow your head, close your eyes, and pray along with me. Say, dear Lord, I know I've made mistakes and need your forgiveness. I believe you died for my sins. Today, I invite you to be the leader and the forgiver of my life. In Jesus' name, amen. Well, amen, amen. If you prayed that prayer, we are celebrating with you best decision that you could make. And we have a couple of next steps. Number one, make sure you tell somebody

about the decision you made, a family member, a friend, let them know.
