(speaking in foreign language) - For those that don't know me, I'm someone who ran on this. (speaking in foreign language) - Out of the leadership team here at church. (speaking in foreign language) - And Pastor Alfredo gave me the pleasure of being able to share the word of God this morning with you. (speaking in foreign language) - We can be praying for him. He's in Honduras on a missionary trip. (speaking in foreign language) - And he'll be back real soon. (speaking in foreign language) - As we know, right now we're in a series speaking on the miracles of Jesus. (speaking in foreign language) - And Pastor Alfredo was talking to us a few weeks ago. (speaking in foreign language) - About the purpose of miracles. (speaking in foreign language) - To show who God is. (speaking in foreign language) - For him to receive all the glory. (speaking in foreign language) - In the middle of them.

(speaking in foreign language) - And also for people to be able to recognize Jesus as God. (speaking in foreign language) - In this morning, we're going to be looking at Jesus calming the storm. (speaking in foreign language) - So the title of today's message is "Wethering the Storm." (speaking in foreign language) - And we're going to be looking at Mark four versus 35 through 41. (speaking in foreign language) - And Jesus in the previous chapters had descended from the mountain. (speaking in foreign language) - Or he gave his famous sermon on the Mount. (speaking in foreign language) and he had been teaching both the disciples and the crowds. (speaking in foreign language) - That God is always in control. (speaking in foreign language) - And that he takes care of us. (speaking in foreign language) - And there he uses the image of the birds and the flowers in the fields. (speaking in foreign language) - That they don't have to gather nor us so. (speaking in foreign language) - But the Lord still provides for them and takes care of them. (speaking in foreign language)

- And up to this moment, the disciples had experienced many of the miracles of Jesus, many of them healing miracles. (speaking in foreign language) - But in this miracle, we're going to learn that Jesus had even more authority. (speaking in foreign language) - And that he has authority over everything that's created. (speaking in foreign language) - Over nature. (speaking in foreign language) - And that there's nothing that's outside of his control. (speaking in foreign language) - So let's pray. (speaking in foreign language) - And then we'll read the passage. (speaking in foreign language) - Thank you, Father. We give you for this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - We pray that you would open our hearts to your teaching. (speaking in foreign language) - That we may grow in the knowledge of you. (speaking in foreign language) - And that in faith through the week, we may walk in faith of knowing who you are and who the Father is. (speaking in foreign language) - In the name of Christ Jesus. (speaking in foreign language)

- So if you'll open your Bibles and read along with us, we're going to be in Mark four versus 35 through 41. (speaking in foreign language) - And reading it, starting in verse 35, he says, "On that day, when evening had come," he said to them, "let us go across to the other side." (speaking in foreign language) - And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And the other boats were with him. (speaking in foreign language) - And a great wind storm arose and the waves were breaking in. (speaking in foreign language) But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion, and they awoke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace, be still, and the wind ceased, "and there was a great calm." (speaking in foreign language) He said to them, "Why are you so afraid? "Have you still no faith?" (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, "Who then is this, "that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

(speaking in foreign language) And so we see that Jesus finishes teaching. (speaking in foreign language) And he says, "Let's go to the other side." (speaking in foreign language) Now we know that Jesus was in the Sea of Galilee. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) Because we know that in the next chapter in Mark, he says he reaches the coast of the Gatorines. (speaking in foreign language) And that's the part where we see that Jesus heals the possessed man and sends the demons to the pigs who then jump over the cliff. (speaking in foreign language) But that's a story for another day. (speaking in foreign language) And so they cross the Sea of Galilee. (speaking in foreign language) And as the pastor already showed us, the Sea of Galilee was very important because of its commercial importance. (speaking in foreign language) There was lots of farming that happened around it and fishing was also very important. (speaking in foreign language) And as we can remember, many of his disciples who are already fishermen in the Sea. (speaking in foreign language) And so they knew the Sea very well.

(speaking in foreign language) And the Sea of Galilee is also known for its sudden storms. (speaking in foreign language) And this is produced by the cold winds coming up from the mountains, combining with the hot winds that are coming in through the desert. (speaking in foreign language) And that creates like a small hurricane in the Sea of Galilee. (speaking in foreign language) And here in Arkansas, we know a lot about those cold fronts meeting those hot fronts. (speaking in foreign language) And so this gives us an idea of what this storm was like. (speaking in foreign language) It was capable of lifting waves that were six feet, even higher. (speaking in foreign language) It was that bad. (speaking in foreign language) And then looking back at verse 37. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) And a great windstorm arose and the waves were breaking into the boat so that the boat was already filling. (speaking in foreign language) The boat was already filling with water.

(speaking in foreign language) I don't know if you've ever been caught in the middle of a storm that you were not expecting. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) I've gone to like several times and two of those times something like this happened. (speaking in foreign language) This very last time I remember we were out on the beach and we were talking as a family. (speaking in foreign language) And we'd already looked at the weather app. (speaking in foreign language) And seen that some rain was coming. (speaking in foreign language) Maybe like in an hour or two? (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) Or is it not? It'll be fine. It feels warm here. We've got a little awning. It'll be okay. (speaking in foreign language) And all of a sudden this wind started to blow. (speaking in foreign language) flying around. And so things started flying around and we stand up and we're trying to hold on to this little awning roof. And we were there for about five, ten minutes going, "No, it'll be okay.

We can hang on." And after that, we started doubting. And so we started cleaning things up, we put up our little roof thing, and as we start putting all of our things up, it starts raining cats and dogs, or, "Palo, there was, they say, Venezuela." And the funny thing is that once everything was packed in and we started leaving, the clouds went away. And there was this beautiful sunshine. But at this point, we'd already packed up. So all the way back home. But it's a strong kind of like this, and the beginning you think, "It'll be okay." But then it starts looking worse than what one thought at first. And at the same time, I also think the disciples had their own way of being able to look at the weather. Look, maybe I see this cloud right there. Oh, this cloud kind of looks like a pyramid. It's kind of gray. But they were still missing the forecast. To the point where the boat was filling with water, the disciples started to get scared. No, what if we can't make it? And they go and they wake up Jesus. But it says in verse 38 that Jesus was asleep, and he was asleep on a cushion. And they woke him and said, "Teacher, do you not care that we're perishing?" And Jesus was asleep in the middle of the storm. And Jesus had spent all day teaching. And this also teaches us that Jesus, though being perfectly God, was also perfectly human and also needed to rest. Now, the fact that Jesus was sleeping does not mean that he was not in control of what was going on in the boat. If we remember in the first verse we read, he was the one that said, "Let's go to the

other side." So Jesus himself had picked the road or the way. So there was a purpose to the strip. And that brings us to our first point of this morning. The problem isn't the storm, but rather how we face it. And as we've already said, Jesus had already taught them in the Sermon on the Mount that they needed to trust in God. That they shouldn't worry about what they were going to eat or what they were going to address. That each day would have its own trouble. He is in control of everything that they needed. And that also includes their safety. Now, many times in the middle of trials we can feel as though Jesus is asleep. But this message reminds us that God is always there. He is in control. - And we must remember what he's already said. (speaking in foreign language) - What he's already taught you. (speaking in foreign language) - You must trust. (speaking in foreign language) - And continue on the trip. (speaking in foreign language) - Jesus said, "Let's go to the other side." (speaking in foreign language) - And it's that God uses trials in our life. (speaking in foreign language) - To grow in faith. (speaking in foreign language) - And the knowledge of who he is.

(speaking in foreign language) - And understanding how we can apply this knowledge to our lives. (speaking in foreign language) - And so the disciples are scared and they wake Jesus up. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - And in an almost rhetorical way, they're asking, "Jesus, do you not care that we're perishing?" (speaking in foreign language) - And seeing that they're calling Jesus the teacher helps us see the disciples. (speaking in foreign language) - And the poor comprehension that they had about Jesus. (speaking in foreign language) - They didn't understand his power. (speaking in foreign language) - Who he was. (speaking in foreign language) - But they were really mistaken because Jesus was really in control. (speaking in foreign language) - Which brings us to our second point. (speaking in foreign language) - God is our strength in the midst of the storm. (speaking in foreign language) - And for him to be that strength. (speaking in foreign language) - We must know him. (speaking in foreign language)

- Look at what Psalm 18 2 says. (speaking in foreign language) - A Psalm that more than likely the disciples already knew. (speaking in foreign language) - The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliver, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. (speaking in foreign language) - Now the disciples knew this text. (speaking in foreign language) - But they really didn't understand who Jesus was. (speaking in foreign language) - He is Christ, he is the rock. (speaking in foreign language) - He is the stronghold, he is the deliver. (speaking in foreign language) - In him can they find rest and peace. (speaking in foreign language) - But they're about to really find this out. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea peace, be still, and the wind ceased and there was great calm. (speaking in foreign language) - When Jesus wakes up and he calms the sea and the waves. (speaking in foreign language) - And I can imagine just the disciples having been left wide-eyed and open-mouthed.

(speaking in foreign language) - Who is this person? (speaking in foreign language) - And they'd just seen. (speaking in foreign language) - Surely they were confused. (speaking in foreign language) - And maybe mute. (speaking in foreign language) - And then Jesus tells them in verse 40. (speaking in foreign language) - Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith? (speaking in foreign language) - And the question Jesus asked them is very interesting. (speaking in foreign language) - Because it reveals both the problem and the solution. (speaking in foreign language) - The problem was that they were afraid. It was fear. (speaking in foreign language) - Why are you so afraid? (speaking in foreign language) - They were afraid of the storm. (speaking in foreign language) - And the solution was a lack of faith. (speaking in foreign language) - A lack of faith? (speaking in foreign language) - But faith in whom?

(speaking in foreign language) - Faith in Jesus. (speaking in foreign language) - Remember, they just called him teacher. (speaking in foreign language) - Now the disciples, since they were fishermen as a trade. (speaking in foreign language) - It's almost 100% sure. (speaking in foreign language) - That after they'd gone through all of this, they remembered Psalm one of them. - (speaking in foreign language) - That describes this situation very well. (speaking in foreign language) - And we're gonna read verses 23, 3.30 just in Spanish because of time. (speaking in foreign language) - But let's read. (speaking in foreign language) - Verse 23. (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language)

- (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - (speaking in foreign language) - Who is this man that was with them? (speaking in foreign language) - Someone who is fulfilling Psalm 107. (speaking in foreign language) - God himself. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - And when the disciples see this, the word says they were filled with great fear. (speaking in foreign language) - And honestly, I also feel compassion for them. (speaking in foreign language) - Because they're going from fear to fear. (speaking in foreign language) - First, they're afraid of the storm. (speaking in foreign language) - And now they're afraid of this man. (speaking in foreign language) - I love how John MacArthur says this. (speaking in foreign language) - The only thing more terrifying than having a storm around the boat is having God inside it. (speaking in foreign language) - Because the storm's already gone. (speaking in foreign language)

- But these men are saying that this man is doing what this psalm says about God. (speaking in foreign language) - This man has to be God. (speaking in foreign language) - And they are sinful men. (speaking in foreign language) - And a sinful man can't stand next to a holy God. (speaking in foreign language) - And you see (speaking in foreign language) - They were afraid and they say, who then is this that even the wind and the sea obey him? (speaking in foreign language) - The answer was obvious. (speaking in foreign language) - Is the God creator of everything. (speaking in foreign language) - Is the Christ. (speaking in foreign language) - And in John one, we understand that through him, all things were made. (speaking in foreign language) - Through his word, he created all things. (speaking in foreign language) - When we look at Genesis, we see that God spoke and it was done. (speaking in foreign language) - And here we see that Jesus speaks and he calms the storm. (speaking in foreign language) - So he is the Christ.

(speaking in foreign language) - And now this same question that disciples asked themselves. (speaking in foreign language) - Is the same question that we must ask ourselves. (speaking in foreign language) - Who is this man then that even the wind and sea obey him? (speaking in foreign language) - Who is with you in the boat? (speaking in foreign language) - Are you alone? (speaking in foreign language) - Or is Jesus with you? (speaking in foreign language) - If you're alone. (speaking in foreign language) - And you're sailing the ship of your life? (speaking in foreign language) - Where are you headed? (speaking in foreign language) - Is God taking you to a safe port? (speaking in foreign language) - Or are you facing the storm on your own knowledge? (speaking in foreign language) - With only your wisdom? (speaking in foreign language) - If Jesus is in your boat. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - And the storm for each one of us may be a little different. (speaking in foreign language)

- It may be economic situations. (speaking in foreign language) - It may be immigration situations. (speaking in foreign language) - It may be health. (speaking in foreign language) - Family. (speaking in foreign language) - Et cetera. (speaking in foreign language) - But the storm is coming. (speaking in foreign language) - And the trials are gonna put to the test our lives. (speaking in foreign language) - Now, if you are alone in this boat. (speaking in foreign language) - I want to tell you that Jesus can come into your boat. (speaking in foreign language) - Don't be prideful. (speaking in foreign language) - It says in the word that he came to the world with that mission. (speaking in foreign language) - It says that he came to save us, to rescue us. (speaking in foreign language) - And it says that whosoever believes in him. (speaking in foreign language) - And his sacrifice on the cross. (speaking in foreign language) - He is faithful and just to save them.

(speaking in foreign language) - As the Psalm says, he is going to take you to a safe port. (speaking in foreign language) - To the port you desire. (speaking in foreign language) - To an eternal port. (speaking in foreign language) - If you want to know more about Jesus. (speaking in foreign language) - You need to invite him into your boat. (speaking in foreign language) - And we want to have a conversation about that. (speaking in foreign language) - Let's take a time after service or let's coordinate some time throughout the week that we can meet. (speaking in foreign language) - Now if Jesus is already in the boat with you. (speaking in foreign language) - Maybe your faith is like the faith of the disciples. (speaking in foreign language) - A poor faith. (speaking in foreign language) - A faith that is lacking the full knowledge of the Lord. (speaking in foreign language) - Of recognizing how great he is. (speaking in foreign language) - Of how he takes care of you. (speaking in foreign language) - Of how he protects you.

(speaking in foreign language) - Of how he provides. (speaking in foreign language) - And of how he is guiding you. (speaking in foreign language) - And so when you know him. (speaking in foreign language) - You can understand the storm that you're going through. (speaking in foreign language) - And like one of the songs that I really like says. (speaking in foreign language) - You can release the weight of your mind. (speaking in foreign language) - Remove that anxiety. (speaking in foreign language) - And trust in him who is the rock. (speaking in foreign language) - Another song says take me to the rock that is higher than I am. (speaking in foreign language) - The rock that is sufficiently strong. (speaking in foreign language) - To be a shelter in the storm. (speaking in foreign language) - To provide salvation. (speaking in foreign language) - We must remember. (speaking in foreign language) - That you can trust in him. (speaking in foreign language)

- And I want to invite the worship team to come up to the front. (speaking in foreign language) - And this morning I'd like to ask you to pray with me. (speaking in foreign language) - And that you may think on the storm in your life. (speaking in foreign language) - And think that Jesus is guiding your boat. (speaking in foreign language) - Holy Father in this morning. (speaking in foreign language) - We give you thanks for your word. (speaking in foreign language) - For your love. (speaking in foreign language) - Thank you that you came to rescue us. (speaking in foreign language) - And in the midst of the storm. (speaking in foreign language) - Even when we may not feel like you're speaking to us. (speaking in foreign language) - You are there. (speaking in foreign language) - Help us to remember your words. (speaking in foreign language) - To trust in who you are. (speaking in foreign language) - And to walk in faith. (speaking in foreign language) - In the name of Christ Jesus.
