All right, hello, City First. So glad that you are here today. Thank you for joining us at all locations, in person and online, and God Behind Bars and Pando app. We love you guys very, very much. And you know what? What a great week it has been as we have just kind of been sitting in just gratitude of all that God did last weekend at Easter. Can we just give him one more round of applause for everything that he did, man? I'll tell you what, so much life change. Thousands of people came to City First. It was just great. Well, today we begin a brand new series, and it's called Made For More. We're talking about how to discover purpose in life. We're gonna talk this month about how to not only discover the purpose, but also we are gonna talk about what we do with that purpose. And this would be a great opportunity for every single one of us to invite somebody because I think there is this general, universal kind of like thing inside of everybody that wonders what their purpose is. And so I just wanna encourage you to do that, even share this message with someone. How many of you have ever done a road trip before? Just raise your hand, all right, yeah.

Like you get in the car, you pack your bags, you bring some snacks, you fill up the gas tank. Back when I was young and living at home, we had relatives that were in Colorado. And so what we would do is many summers, we would actually jump in the car and we begin a 15-hour drive to Colorado. Now, if you have ever done the drive from Illinois to Colorado, you know it is not the most exciting journey in the world, right? You get past Omaha, Nebraska, and there is literally nothing. There's literally nothing. It is flat, you could see for like days. And what we would do is we'd usually break it up, break up the trip, instead of doing like a 15-hour bonsai trip, we would break it up. And so my parents and I, we would stop in Kearney, Nebraska. Anybody ever been to Kearney, Nebraska before? Kearney has a sign right off the highway that says, keep going. Like GPS actually apologizes. You've arrived in Kearney, Nebraska. Now, anyway, I'm kidding. Hopefully no one's watching Kearney, Nebraska, but they'd probably admit it. They'd be like, yeah, he's telling the truth. But you know, we'd stay there

and there's literally nothing there. It's in the middle of nowhere. We'd stay there, get up the next day, drive the rest of the way to Colorado. And even like getting into Colorado in the first part of Colorado, it is flat, flat, flat, until finally you can see the mountains and the trees and it makes the trip all worthwhile. Life is exactly the same way. The destination is worth all of the boring, uneventful, even detours of life. If you know where you're going and the destination is someplace you want to go, how crazy would it be to fill up your car with gas, to get in with your family or friends and get all your snacks, and you just decide that you're gonna drive around in circles all day long, never reaching a destination. What a waste that would be. And yet, unfortunately, that's what a lot of people do with this one and only life of theirs, that they're only focusing on today what they need to get done, but they're never thinking to themselves, where am I going? Like, where am I going five years from now, 10 years from now, 50 years from now? Where am I gonna end up? They're just focused on just driving today.

But I think there is this like soulish question that all of us have, and it can kind of materialize like this, you know, like, what am I here for? Or what is the meaning of life? Or where is my life heading? Or what's my life's purpose? And I will tell you the greatest tragedy in life is not death, but rather life without reason. Existing without purpose is a perilous way to live. And there are so many people that they just get up and they, you know, go to work, or they go to school and they pay the bills. And yeah, those are parts of life. That's what we all do actually, but yet they don't even think beyond that. And I would just say that when purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable. And what I mean by that is this, if you don't know the purpose of something. You don't see the value of it, so therefore you will abuse it. You'll neglect it. You won't pay attention to it. If you don't know the purpose of your life, and if you don't understand the value of this life, you may abuse this life. And I believe one of the deepest cravings that's in the human spirit is to find significance and to find relevance in this life. Why are you here today? I don't mean like, why are you in church? I'm glad you're in church. I'm talking beyond that 40,000 foot. Why are you here? What's the purpose of your life? Because without purpose, life doesn't really have much meaning or significance. And it seems like our culture will continuously try to sell us or tell us temporary, momentary types of purpose. Like culture will be like,

hey, I'll tell you the purpose of life. Get a lot of money. Well, there's nothing wrong with that. I mean, we all need money. Some people are like, oh yeah, I don't need money. Yeah, you do. You need money. We all need money. We need money to survive, but money cannot be the overarching purpose of this life. Otherwise, the happiest people on the face of the earth are the ones with all the money, right? And you've read the stories. You know that sometimes the people that have the most money aren't the happiest. In fact, Biggie Smalls says it best, more money, more problems. Some of you know, right? You've heard it. Heard the song. You know, culture will say sometimes reputation, reputation is the ultimate goal. You know, recognition, fame, that's the aim. Let's just make ourselves famous or get recognition. But you know, having people recognize you for accomplishments, that's nice. It feels good for a moment and it makes you feel good, right? But you know, to be insta-famous or just to be recognized, that feels like it lands a little short when we're talking about life's overarching purpose, right? Some people would say, and culture would say, well, finding the significant other person, that's life's goal. Now, that's good. I mean, especially if someday, you know, you want to be married and such like that, but once you do find that person, anybody that's married or been married for a long time will tell you that once you find that person, it's great. But you discover real quick that that other person has imperfections and flaws. And no matter what Tom Cruise says, they don't complete you, all right? All the things, power, love, sex, money, fame, getting stuff, you know, all of that is not necessarily bad if it's within the context of how God created us to steward those things, all right? But they can't be the overarching aim of our life because all of them will not satisfy. Like if, you know, if I had time to share with you person after person, testimony after testimony, book after book, writing after writing, quote after quote of people who have had all of these things in spades and they say, guess what? It just doesn't fill the void inside of the heart. I believe intuitively you probably already know this. Like I'm saying it, but you're probably like, yeah, I've heard that. I've seen the quotes. I've maybe

even experienced myself getting some of these things and it really hasn't made me happy. And you would probably echo what the richest man and maybe even most arguably maybe the most powerful man in the Old Testament said one time. His name was Solomon. This is his quote. He said, meaningless, meaningless, utterly meaningless, everything is meaningless. He had everything. He had, he had like plenty of money. He was the wisest man on the face of the earth, the Bible said. He had like 300 wives, 700 concubines. I mean, like, you know, Jen looks at me all the time, she's like, you can't handle more than one wife. He had wives in spades, he had money, he had power, people from other lands were coming to like observe his reign. riches, and at the end of his life, he writes in the book of Ecclesiastes, it's all meaningless, it's all meaningless. You know, I'll tell you this, if you don't know your purpose, the enemy will give you one. If you don't know your purpose, the enemy will sell you on one and tell you, oh, this is gonna make you happy, this is gonna satisfy. So what do we do? We strive after short-term fulfillment most of the time. We're only driving for today. We're not thinking about where we're heading, we're just trying to like drive for today. Norman Lear, who is, you know, or was a TV producer, I don't even know if he's still alive to be honest with you, but he said this, he goes, the societal disease of our time is short-term thinking. And short-term highs won't fill long-term holes in our heart. So what's real purpose? What is real purpose?

Well, purpose is the original intent for the creation of a thing. That's what purpose is. If you had to define it, it's the original intent. In other words, it's the destination that prompts the journey. And we believe as Christ followers that your purpose is given to you by your creator. That's assigned to you. You don't just, you know, you don't just, you know, come from pond scum 10 billion years ago. In fact, I would even say, if you don't believe that there is a God, you can't really even reconcile this idea of purpose or significance. Because we're all just chants then at that point. I mean, it was the tornado that went through a junkyard and assembled at 747. So like, if you don't believe that there's a God that actually created us with design and purpose, it's hard to reconcile this idea of purpose and significance. So here's the thing, like if I were a watch designer or creator, like I made watches for a living, all right? I will tell you, I had a specific purpose in mind as I was sketching up the drawing and I was creating the design. And then I began to manufacture it. The whole time I'm thinking of its purpose,

I'm actually building it because of its purpose. You see, only the creator knows the purpose of the creation. Does that make sense? I love what Biles Monroe, a great pastor, he's now been promoted to heaven, but I love what he wrote one time. He said this, "'To remove your purpose would be "'to significantly change who you are "'because your purpose both informs and reveals "'your nature and your responsibilities. "'Everything you naturally have and inherently are "'is necessary for you to fulfill your purpose. "'Your height, race, skin color, language, "'physical features, and intellectual capacity "'are all designed for your purpose. "'God gave it to you.'" Quit trying to be somebody else because you can't live out their purpose. You can only live out your purpose. Does that make sense? You know, it's kind of like this hairdryer here, all right? It was invented for a purpose, to dry your wet hair, okay? But imagine this, imagine that if the hairdryer goes, I don't like my design. I don't like my creation. Instead, I want to alter that. And so let's just say that the hairdryer goes, I don't like the fact that I have a vent. I don't like this little vent on the end here.

And so I'm going to change that because I saw something else that doesn't have a vent and I don't want a vent. And so now I'm gonna block it. And now all of a sudden what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna function without a vent. Now, how many of you know that if I did this very long, we're gonna have to call the fire department? In fact, even right now it's starting to smell a little bit like it's getting hot and it's burning, right? Now, I'm gonna go ahead and turn that off before we have to call the fire department. But I just want to say this, that when we try to change who we are because of our insecurity, or we see somebody else who has something that we don't have and we alter who we are, our purpose stays the same. I didn't change the purpose of the hairdryer by changing its function, okay? The purpose is the same, but it's not gonna function the same because what I've done is I've tried to change the way it functions, the way it works, the way it looks. I've tried to alter it and it will function for a season, but it will not function properly over the long haul. In other words, that's exactly. Only what happens when you try to take on someone else's persona, their looks, or their abilities. God created you to be you.

Quit trying to be somebody else. You'll function temporarily, but not over the long haul. Your purpose has not changed, but your ability to fulfill that purpose has been hindered. The way you are is because of your why. God knew the why, so he created the way you are. You are perfectly designed to fulfill your God-given purpose. And here are some truths I want to share with you about purpose. Number one is this, you are not a cosmic coincidence. You are a crafted creation. You know what, you are a crafted creation. Has anyone ever bought something like this from a store? It is furniture in a box, all right? You know, the famous one is Ikea, right? I mean, and so you say, you know what, I need a nightstand, and so what we do is we will take, and many times we'll buy something like this, and we'll begin to assemble it. How many of you just say that one of the most life-giving things that you can do is to put together one of these kind of things, right? I mean, there's just all of these parts, and pieces, and things like that, and I mean, you know, this, all of the stuff, the little holes, you know what I mean? You gotta put in the screws, Allen wrench. Whoever invented the Allen wrench, right? I mean, I just tell you, I know it's necessary in life,

but like those kind of like screws drive me crazy. I mean, and then what happens here? You look, these things are particle board. It's just, these things are crap, right? I mean, come on, and so you look at something like this, and you're like, all right, I'm gonna put it all together here, and it takes you like hours. It's cheap, but it makes you pay in leather ways, right? You know what I'm talking about? Somewhere in here, there's the toolkit. Yeah, there it is, right here. This is the best part, right? I mean, this is like these. All right, versus a handcrafted 1940s piece that was made by an artisan that is someone who took many hours, handcrafted, hand carved, and so many times in life, we see ourselves as something like this. We see that, oh, I'm just Jeremy DeWert, nothing special. Don't have a lot of talents. I see everybody else, they all have the talents, and they all have the abilities, and they all get like all the breaks and such like that. When God says, no, no, you are a created being. You are made on purpose and for a purpose, and there was great intentionality that went into who you are. I love what the psalmist says in Psalms 139.

He said this, you made all the delicate inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex. Your workmanship is marvelous. How well I know it. I want you to know that this is not you. You are not cookie cutter. You are not just one of eight billion on the face of the earth that all are like, no, no, no, no, no, God created you. He loves you. He put great intention. Now I know, I know, I know that there may be accidental parents, but there are no accidental kids. Do you understand that? There are no accidental kids. God loves you, he cares for you. Number two, before God wants your service, he wants your attention. So many times I run into people all the time, they're like, oh, I'd come to church, or yeah, I'd give my life to Jesus, but you know what, I just don't do much for God. I'm not, I mean, I'm not that good. I'm not that religious. And we think to ourselves, we got to join God's army of do-gooders and act like Mother Teresa and all that kind of stuff. Well, yes, God wants us to do good works. It's part of the Bible.

It talks about it, that he wants us to make a contribution to this world. in the name of Jesus, yes. But our contribution is not as important as our relationship with him. He wants a relationship. In fact, you know what? For some of us, especially even those of us that have been around church for decades, I wanna remind you, it's not what you do for God, it's who you are. He loves you. God loved you long before that you made Jesus the leader and the forgiver of your life. He loved you to the fullest extent. In fact, it says in Romans chapter five, verse eight, it says this, but God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. In other words, even before we acknowledged him, Jesus died for us, he loves us. I remember when my two oldest boys were younger, like real young, I would come home from work and, you know, usually a long day of work and I'd come home and they were there to greet me at the door and they would smile and they'd be like, daddy, you know? No matter how crazy my day was, it would put a smile on my face to see my kids happy to see me.

And you know, next thing they would ask is they'd be like, let's play football. And I just, you know, I'm like, I'm tired, right? You know, but what do you do when you're a parent? You're like, you cowboy up, that's what you do. You're like, okay, we're gonna play football. And at our house at the time, we had paint that was in the living room that kind of had a bluish tone to it, you could say. And so what we titled is, we called it blue room football. And I would get down on my knees and we'd get a Nerf football in the living room. And literally the living room was, you know, the field and they would be on one end and I would, you know, throw them the ball and then they would try to run and get past me and I had to stay on my knees. I couldn't do this anymore, trust me. You know what I mean? But back then when I was young and agile and I would on my knees and I would like, you know, go across and I'd tackle them. We'd have this amazing blue room football. To this day, the kids remember blue room football. Now I will tell you, they didn't care what kind of day I had. I could have preached to thousands of people. I could have met with the president of the United States. I mean, they didn't care. They just wanted to spend time playing blue room football with their dad.

And I kind of think as I was thinking about that, like that's a picture of our heavenly father with us. Yes, he's running the world. Yes, he's got the whole world in his hands like the song talks about. And no, it's not spinning hopelessly out of control, although there is hopeless, you know, parts of it and it's broken and it's sinful and all that, but God is still in control and the God of the universe does not just want us to look to him as the one that has everything in control. God wants us to look to him and he wants to spend time with us. He wants to spend time with us. It's not about the work. It's about the relationship. Yes, we need to do good works for God, but listen, he's more interested in a personal relationship with you and you cannot work your way into right relationship with God. You just can't do it. So it's like, well, I got to do a little bit more random acts of kindness or something like that. Then God will accept me. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You cannot work your way into right relationship with God. He wants a relationship with you just the way you are. Number three, another part of purpose is this, is God isn't distant, he's dialed in.

Some of us feel like he's a million miles away. You know, it says in Psalms 145, I love this, says the Lord is near to all who call on him. The Lord is near to all who call on him. Some of us need to write the address of this verse on a piece of paper and put it on a mirror that we look at every day or whatever to remind us that God is not a million miles away on a cloud somewhere floating with a big, long, white beard, all right? He is near. Now you may not feel him, but I want you to know his word states that he is with you. Our feelings will feel all the things and many times cannot accurately discern what's really going on in the life that we are living. You know, he is with you in the good. He's with you in the bad. He's with you in the celebration. He's with you in the sorrows. And it isn't whether God has been near to us, it's whether we've tried to acknowledge and search for him in the moments of life that we live, that when we're driving in the car, when we're going to work, when we're going through the great times and the bad times, are we acknowledging that he is there? Where are we seeking Him at those moments? Most of the time, we just put our head down and we just get through life.

And the whole time God is saying, I am here. I am here. Acknowledge that I'm here. I wanna help you, I'm here. You know, when Paxton was young, our youngest, when he was really young and he was a baby, and those of you that are parents, you'll remember these days in the crib, you would buy a baby monitor, right? And one of the pieces of equipment was a camera that you would put in the room and you kind of clip it to the end of the crib or put it somewhere where it was kind of like aiming at the crib. And then you would take the other wireless receiving part that had a little screen and the little speaker and you'd go to different parts of the house. And when you'd put Paxton down or we'd put Paxton down, we would then turn on the baby monitor and we could hear in the other room. And this is what would happen, that you would hear the smallest little noise or the smallest little whimper or a little bang or a little cry. And what would you do as a parent? You immediately look at the screen and you would be dialed in, right? Because you're trying to see, is Paxton getting up or is your kid getting up or whatever else? You are dialed in and as parents,

you are listening for the smallest little cry. You hear that? And I wanna tell you, God is the same way. His ear is attentive to you and he's waiting for the smallest little acknowledgement. He's waiting for the smallest little cry for help. He's waiting for the smallest little sentence or word where you speak to him. The God of the universe has his ears waiting, turned towards you. I want you to know that he loves you, he cares for you. And your feelings may tell you that you are alone or that God is not listening to you, but you're not ignored, you're known. You understand that? And he cares for you. Number four, your life is a canvas and worship is the paint. You sit there and say, well, what do you mean? Well, we're talking about purpose today and your life is a canvas and your worship is the paint that begins to paint the picture. What is the ultimate reason you're alive? Some of you are like, you haven't really gotten to that point of what my ultimate purpose is. I'm gonna tell you right now, dial in. I left it for last, all right? I'm gonna say it in the most succinct way that I could possibly say it. But if you had to ask me, why am I here?

Why do I have life? The best, most succinct answer I could give you is this. You are created to have a relationship with God and to worship him. That is it right there. You are created to have a relationship with God, not just a religion, not just go through motions, no, a relationship with God and you are created to worship him. You are not created for you. You are created for him. Now, it doesn't play well in our narcissistic me-centered culture who wants everything to be about us. But I'm gonna break it to you here. You are not created for you. You are created for him. And before I'm misunderstood that I'm painting God to be some self-absorbed megalomaniac, all right? That's not true. In fact, if you look from the beginning of the book, to the very end of the book, you will see an overarching 40,000 foot theme. And the theme is this, the relationship of God and humans, God and you and me. And the journey of that book over all the stories is basically this. It is God continuously reaching out to us and us continually blowing him off.

You say, Jer, you're a doctor, you're a theologian. Explain the Bible. That's it right there. The story of God and us. And he's pursuing us continuously and we're continuously blowing him off. That's the story. And so there is a God who wants to have a relationship with you and me. And we keep on blowing him off. God created you for relationship with him. And the natural response is this, we worship. Because when you don't blow him off, when you stop blowing him off, and you say, God, I want a relationship with you, all of a sudden you begin to understand how. majestic, how powerful, how holy, how loving our God is. And you're like, I need to worship you with my life. I've been given this one and only life. There are no do-overs. There are no mulligans. You don't come back as a cow or a caterpillar. This is it. It's a canvas. And our choices are painting a picture. And this picture should be one of a life that is full of worship and glorifies our creator. And worship is more than just singing. When I say worship, don't think about just singing. That's a very small part of worship.

Worship is your life, your actions. I have a friend in Washington State and he owns a Picasso. It hangs over his fireplace. I've been to his house a few times. It's on Orcas Island, overlooking the Sound. You can see Vancouver in the distance. It's just absolutely breathtaking. He has this Picasso. But he will tell you this, that his most cherished art, and he has other pieces of art on his walls, but his most cherished art, the art that is most valuable to him is not the Picasso that hangs over the fireplace, but rather the drawings that are on his refrigerator. Because he had a young son when I was there and he showed me the drawings, stick figures, crayons, markers that color outside of the lines, plastered all over the refrigerator. A Picasso over here and his kid's artwork over here. And he said, that artwork on the refrigerator is more priceless than that will ever be. Why? Why is the refrigerator artwork more precious? Well, it's because of who made it. You see, when you live your life, trying to honor God, none of us are perfect, but trying to honor God through your work, through your parenting, through your schooling, through just showing up with integrity,

trying to do the right thing. When you do that, it's painting a picture on the canvas of your life. And oh, it will not be perfect. It's not gonna be coloring on all the lines. There's gonna be mistakes and there's gonna be things. But when we look at God and we say, God, we're doing the best that we can, I'm doing the best that I can to paint a picture of worship to you. And like a small child, I'm handing it to the God of the universe. To him, that is more beautiful than any Rembrandt, any Picasso, any Van Gogh, any Mona Lisa. He looks at that and he goes, this is beautiful. Why? Because of who is creating it. Today, what you do is worship to God. Tomorrow, what you do is worship to God. What's your purpose? Yeah, you go to work. You get your paycheck from wherever. You do your parenting, you do your schooling. Some of you that are right now in school, you're getting into your finals. You do all that kind of stuff. That's all great. Your ultimate purpose, the reason why you are here, that there is oxygen in your lungs

is because you were created by God for a relationship with him. And your life is a canvas that every day you are painting in worship and you're handing it back to him and saying, God, it's not perfect, but I love you and help me to be just more and more of a reflection of who you are every single day. And you're handing this artwork to him. And guess what? He puts it on heaven's refrigerator. And he's like, that's my boy. That's my girl. You see, life is worship. And it's not gonna be perfect, but let's try to give as much worship as we can to the God who loves us most. Let me have us bow our heads and close our eyes. Today. I'm gonna ask for two things. Number one, if you say before God today, God I want to get better at painting this canvas. I want to get better at my worship to you through my actions, through my words, through my contribution to life. You're not promising to be perfect, but you're just saying God I I want to be reminded every day is a gift and today is worship to you. And you say that that's me. I'm leaving here and I want this to really be ingrained in me. I want to not forget this in 24 hours. I want my life to be worship. You may already be a Christ follower. This is not a moment of making a decision for Jesus. You're just saying I want it. I want to be painting a better picture for the God of the universe. If that's you, just raise your hand and put it right back down. My hand is up on that by the way. Lord our hands are up.

God help our lives to be worshipped to you. Today and how we parent. Tomorrow and how we go to work. How we go to school. How we treat the person at Target. Wherever we're at, God we want to be worshipped to you. Help us Lord God. Help us to paint life's canvas as a beautiful picture of worship to the God who saved us. It's not gonna be perfect. Sometimes it's gonna look a little childlike, but God we give it to you. We love you. We thank you. Lastly with every head bowed and every eye closed, if you say I have never given my life to Jesus and today I want to. I want to. I want to acknowledge that I was created by an almighty all loving God on purpose and for a purpose. If that's you today, you say I want to give my life to Jesus. I want to ask for forgiveness of all my sin and I want heaven as my home someday. Just raise your hand real quickly and put it right back down. Yeah, hands are up. Let's go ahead and let's close by all praying this prayer together and if you raise your hand you need to know that God is listening to you. Can we all say this prayer together? Heavenly Father, I come to you today and I acknowledge Jesus as my Lord and Savior, my leader and forgiver. I believe that he died for me. Come into my heart Jesus. Forgive me of my sin. I want to live for you. Thank you God for creating me and loving me. In Jesus name. Everybody said amen. Come on let's give God a huge round of applause. Can we do that? Wow, what a helpful message and so challenging and even encouraging and so hopefully you got something out of that and if you made that decision to make Jesus the leader and the forgiver of your life, congratulations. It is the best decision that you will ever make and so we want to say congratulations to you and maybe you're going well what's next? What do I do now? There's a couple of things. Let somebody know.
