How's everybody doing this morning? Yeah, I want to welcome everybody. Come on in y'all. My name is Jason Ramos. I get the privilege of serving as Impact Hueco director and one of our elders here at Antioch Hueco. I want to welcome everybody in the room. Coming on in from the lobby and everybody online watching and on the Pando app. Hey, here at Antioch we always love to share with people that we're a people who have a passion for Jesus and his purposes in the earth. And so today we're glad that you're joining us, joining us online. And our hope is that today that you encounter God, the living God, that you worship him in spirit and truth and you get to do it all together in the context of family with his people. And so we're glad you're here today. Our hope is that that today you discover a place to call home as well if you're visiting and be a part of all that the church is doing. Hey, this past week we had an amazing time. We had a conference called U.S. Con or Us Con right here and we had 1100 people from our 55 U.S. church plants. So 55 churches around the U.S. as part of our Antioch movement plus one Canadian church and our seven Latin American churches. And so you can see on the screen and for the week we were in here seeking the Lord, encountering him, hearing fresh words of God and really people who have dropped their nets to follow him and respond to the call of God back up here on their faces saying, God, we want a fresh move of you. Hey, I want to encourage anybody in the room. Part of it was part of U.S. Con or one of our churches

from around the States here with us this morning. Anybody here? Hey, come and stand to your feet. Let's give them. Let's give them all a clap right here. Again, you see on the picture these people right here are part of the plants going out right now. So some of our newest church plants going out again, responding to the call of God. Hey, we love it. You know what we also love is when we have our people as well coming back, not only from the U.S., but around the world. And so today we have the Turners with us. I want to ask them to stand to your feet. They're part of our, they've been in Northwest Africa for 11 years laying down their life, taking the gospel of Jesus. Hey, again, today, we're glad you're here with us right outside this room. There's a place called Connect. And if you're, you come today, you encounter the Lord and you're saying, hey, I want to get connected. I hear about this thing called life groups, or I want to jump into what the church is doing. You can connect with one of our pastors there, hear more about the church and just get prayed for as well. And so today I want to ask you, stand to your feet right now. One of the best things that I love here on Sunday mornings is the preaching is amazing. The worship is beautiful, but I love connecting with the body of Christ. And so turn to the person next to you, introduce yourself and say, hey, do you still have any plans remaining before the heat wave is gone this summer? Good morning, church. We are thankful. It is August. I can't believe it's August, but it is. And my prayer is just as we're finishing out the summer, coming into the new school year, that we finish strong. And I was just praying for you, praying for our team. That's part of leading the service and just our whole church family that this Sunday, God would restore and renew and revive our vision of who Jesus is. And so we're going to read a scripture all together about that. And then I just want to invite. us to have a moment before we start singing that we would pray and ask God to open the eyes of our heart. How many of you know that our heart has eyes and we can see God and have a spiritual vision that's different than just our mind, different than just our emotions? It's good.

So let's read the scripture all together. It's gonna be on the screen. If you're not standing, go ahead and stand with us. Let's read this together. Jesus asked his disciples, who do people say the son of man is? They replied, some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. But what about you, he asked, who do you say I am? Simon Peter answered, you are the Messiah, the son of the living God. Jesus replied, blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my father in heaven. Amen, that's our prayer this morning. Lord, would you ask that question of us? Would you ask us personally in a fresh way, who do we say you are? And our hearts say that you are our Lord, that you are our healer, that you are our rescuer, that you are the one that saw us when we were a long way off, far from you, rebellious, trapped, bound, shackled in prison. You're the one that saw us when we couldn't do anything for ourselves. You're the one that saw us when we were stuck in addiction and cycles of shame. You're the one that saw us before we ever even had a thought to follow you

or to even do anything that was remotely godly. God, you're the one that saw us before we loved you. You are our friend, you are our healer, our Lord, you're our savior, we love you. And we just say along with Simon Peter, you are Christ, you are the Messiah, the promised deliverer, the rescuer of the whole world that's all around us, broken, falling apart. You're the one that holds it all together and you're the one that's coming back. You're the one that's gonna make all things new. You're the one that's gonna wipe every tear away from our eyes, who will restore all things. And so we look to you and we worship you and we adore and magnify you this morning. We love you, Jesus. Would you open the eyes of our hearts? Let's just take a moment here. Would you ask him, ask him, Holy Spirit, would you open the eyes of my heart to see you fresh this morning? Make that your prayer as we begin this time of worship. God, we wanna see you rightly. We've seen you before, but we wanna see you again. We wanna see you even more clearly this morning. Awesome, we are glad that you are back. Along with them returning from sabbatical, we're gonna celebrate baptism today and a really powerful story that's touched generations. So if you will turn your attention to the screen, you'll hear the testimony, and then we're gonna celebrate a baptism. Hi, I'm Gloria. I'm excited to be baptized today. I grew up in the Philippines as the youngest daughter of eight children, and I was raised in the Catholic faith. I believe in God, but I didn't really know what it means to have a personal relationship in Jesus. When I was in the Philippines, one day I went to my friend's house and they have a Bible study. She allowed me to join their Bible study. When I get back from the United States, my daughter told me how to accept Jesus. I was thinking it was too late for me at first because I'm 81, but when I realized for God,

it's never been too late. God said, no matter who you are, how old are you, it doesn't matter for Him. After I accept Jesus, my life was changed. No more worries. All I feel is the love of Jesus. I have five grandkids and they're all Christian. That's why I was so happy to join them. That's why I want to be baptized. I'm very proud to be baptized, and I'm gonna share that to my friends in the Philippines. I'm very proud. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. I got to step back into the beautiful story of a multi-generational family on mission. And in a little moment here at the end of this baptism, I want you to be thinking about your own family. This beautiful family, you have Lynn and Rovin, son and daughter to Gloria, but Lynn is also the husband of Gil who oversees our maintenance now, always been serving in the church with us. Melissa, you guys saw up there leading worship. She's been, I was gonna say deported.

That would be like, wow. No, she has been sent to Miami. Cause you don't get deported to Miami, you get blessed to go to Miami. And she's here with us today. It's just a beautiful gift to all of us. And Mianna works here on our communications staff, Mark's on the keyboard. This is a family deal going on. And never forget Adam, who works and serves in a thousand ways, been working with us all summer. This is a multi-generational family on mission. And man, Gloria, we are so proud of you. We love you. We love you. We love you. And Rovin, you're gonna do the honors. I think Lynn, you're gonna lead us out. Ma, have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior? Yes. Will you choose to follow him all the days of your life? Yes. Me and your son baptizes you in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. Buried with him in baptism. Lord, we are so thankful for the glory of God that has hit the De La Cruz family. And we thank you that it's just the beginning. It's not only not too late, it's just the beginning for Gloria to experience your glory in this life and in and through her life. Her testimony already is moving our hearts closer to you. And we thank you for this multi-generational family on mission. And we thank you that Gloria didn't know what she was starting, but it's a blessing that will never end. And so we consecrate this moment. We consecrate her life. We consecrate this family again to your glory in our city, in our church, and in the nations of the earth, because they have said yes to you, there is no end to the blessing of heaven. Everyone else right now, I just want you to lift up a friend or a loved one, a family member who's apart from God, where you're believing for your whole family. God, we ask, bring them back. Bring them to you, God. Let every family member come back to you in the name of Jesus. Let every family member come for the first time. And Lord, we pray for this blessing on our church to heal and restore whole families up to three generations. Righteousness will extend to our children's children.

Fill us, oh God, and overwhelm us with grace today, we pray in Jesus' name. And everybody said, amen. Woo! So powerful. I love the stories of God's grace in that message. It's never too late for God. Just amazing, takes my breath away. We're gonna continue with the time of getting in God's word today. We have a special speaker today, Caleb Seibert, who's planting Antioch, Miami along with his wife, Sierra, to help plant Antioch, D.C. before that. And before Caleb comes up here, few things that I wanted just to share by way of honoring him. If you know him, you love him. If you don't know him, you're gonna get a chance to know him today and love him. But I love that Caleb is humble. Caleb walks in a humility where he looks to Jesus, looks to the interests of others. Caleb walks in faith when I'm around him and when we're together. My faith is stirred to believe God in greater ways for my own life and for our church. And Caleb walks in joy, that he walks in the joy of Jesus. And as he shares today, my prayer is that it's gonna stir your faith to believe God, to move afresh in our midst, and it's gonna stir your joy in Jesus

Well, like Zach said, my name's Caleb, and it is such a gift to be with you guys. I was talking with some of the tech team in the back.

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since I lived in Waco. And in the last several years, I'll share a little bit of my story. This morning, I've lived overseas, lived in Austin, went to Washington, D.C., and then the last few years have been in Miami, Florida, planning a church. And it's just good to be home. Good to be with you guys. And I wanted to start by introducing my little family. So I think we've got a photo of my wife, Sierra, and our nine-week-old son, James Shepherd, who his eyes are open. He's almost looking at the camera. But we were laughing. I was texting Sierra, I need a photo of our family. And if you've been around newborns, they change every day, almost. So this is from two weeks ago. And we love him a ton. And he's a pretty good sleeper. So all the parents in the room, just glory. We're super, super grateful. We also, as Zach was saying earlier, just finished a week here where people from our 55 Antioch churches around the U.S., all their staff, core leaders, came in to Waco to get equipped and trained. And we took about 20 people on a bus from Miami.

They drove about 21 hours. And so here's some of our leaders here. Some of our Miami folks I think are still here. What's up, guys? Let's go. We love Miami. And I really wish this morning I could just go person by person in this photo and share their stories with you guys. About half of these guys, two to three years ago, were walking in new age or deep brokenness, trapped in bondage and addiction. And God has been meeting with them and transforming people's lives. And now they're leaders, leading people in our church. So God's doing a really beautiful thing. Anyone in this room, you're welcome to come through Miami. Maybe you'll go to Fort Lauderdale on a cruise. Drive down, it's 30 minutes. We'd love to see ya. But I am really thankful to be back in town. And over the last week, we've been driving around. And it's hard to drive around Waco and not get a little bit nostalgic. In particular, I've been thinking a lot about H-E-B. South Florida has a lot of really good food, but it is an H-E-B desert. Nothing quite like H-E-B. And I was thinking. as I was preparing for this message,

just remembering, you know, as a kid, kind of running around in HEB. And one of my favorite things to do, which there may be a few more of you in this crowd today, was to get one of the HEB shopping carts and get a little bit of a running start and jump on the back and just see how long I could go. And I grew up pre the big HEB on Valley Mills, so there wasn't quite as much open space. You guys are spoiled these days, man, there's so much room. But I was, you know, thinking about that, and if you've ever done that, or, you know, if you're more responsible than me, and, you know, maybe just a scooter, something that you push and you get a little bit of momentum, you know that no matter how big of a push, eventually the momentum is gonna stop, right? And, you know, it may be by running into a wall of groceries which may or may not have happened to me at some point in the past, or it just may be the laws of physics, that the friction of the ground and the air, eventually, no matter how big of a push, no matter how much momentum, without another push, that momentum is going to stop. And as I've been praying for our church, praying into this time this morning, I just kept thinking, I know there are people in the room, maybe this is your first time here, maybe others of you have been here for 20 years,

but you're sitting in momentum of God. There's just a holy momentum here. You can sense the presence of God during worship, and that doesn't just happen overnight, that's thousands of people that have said yes to Jesus, and been a part of what he's doing, not just in our city, but around the world. But that momentum, as amazing as it is, can stall out. If there's not another generation, another group of people willing to push. And in the kingdom of God, pushing is not about gritting your teeth and striving and making something happen. Pushing looks like surrendering to Jesus, being obedient, being available to what he wants to do. And so my heart this morning, I don't know that I'm gonna share something super new. You may have read this text before, you may have heard some of these truths before, but my prayer is that it would be a little bit of a push for us, that we'd lean in again to who we've always been in this house, and who God's calling us to be. Everybody with me? Hey, so let me just pray for us that God would open up our hearts to receive from him this morning. Lord, we love you, and we recognize your presence here. And we pray, Holy Spirit, would you come do your ministry? As we open up your word, I pray for your love to be at hand,

your comfort to be at hand, your conviction to be at hand. But I pray you'd speak to every heart. You see every person sitting in this room. You know their need. And we invite you, Lord, to come and meet with us. And it's in Jesus' name we pray, amen. Amen. All right, well, hey, if you've got a Bible, open it up to Matthew chapter four. That's where we're gonna start this morning. Starting in verse 17, I want us to read a couple of accounts of Jesus calling his disciples. Here's what it says in verse 17. From that time, Jesus began to preach, saying, repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who's called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, follow me, and I will make you fishers and men. Immediately, they left their nets, and they followed him. And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, John, his brother, in the boat with Zebedee, their father, mending their nets, and he called them. And immediately, they left the boat, and they left their father, and they followed him. If you jump down a few chapters in Matthew nine, we're gonna see another moment,

where Jesus calls one of his disciples. Matthew 9, nine, as Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew, sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, follow me. And he rose, and he followed him. So we're looking at these three snapshots, these three moments, where Jesus calls some of his disciples, some of his followers. And I wanna just paint the scene for you a little bit. Where have we been so far in the book of Matthew, leading up to this? We've read about the genealogy of Jesus, we've heard a little bit about his birth, we've heard about... some of the trials that he and his family faced. He leaves Israel, he'll come back. We've been introduced to John the Baptist, this prophetic voice preparing the way for Jesus. And he's gathering people and he's inviting them to repent, to turn around from their life of sin and toward God. And he's baptizing people. And Jesus is gonna come on the scene in Matthew chapters three. And we're gonna see him baptized by John. The power of the Holy Spirit comes on him and he goes into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He comes back and it's time for his ministry to begin. And the scripture is gonna say that he settles in a city called Capernaum and he begins to preach this message that we just read, repent.

What does that word mean? Turn around, change your thinking, repent because the kingdom of heaven is at hand. It's not a far away thing that's just gonna come one day, it's here right now. This is the thesis statement, if you will, of Jesus's ministry. Turn around, the kingdom of heaven is right here and he's gonna begin to call some followers. And we don't know how long Jesus had been preaching this message, but it's pretty clear in the text. This is right at the beginning. And you gotta remember in that day, it's not like there was social media or news to watch. It's very likely that a lot of these followers didn't really know Jesus. But maybe they'd heard him say something in the synagogue one time. Maybe they'd seen him preaching in the middle of town. Maybe they never had, but he's just getting started. And I think a lot of times we can read our Bibles and if you've been around church for a while like I have, we can read these stories like they're so normal. Yeah, Jesus shows up, toss the net, here we go. I mean, this is what happens. But I wanna just invite you to use your imagination with me for a second. Let's put ourselves into this story. Has anybody ever worked a service job before? Worked at a restaurant?

Front desk, okay, got a bunch of hands in the room. Again, use your imagination with me. Let's say you're working at Chipotle by Baylor. Okay, and you're the person right by that crazy tortilla heater that heats those tortillas up in like two seconds. You know, you're welcoming people when they come and they initially get their order in the line and it's just a regular Tuesday. I mean, you're just, you know, cooking steak and prepping burrito bowls and a line starts to form at lunch and you're taking orders and you see this guy walk in the back. And he might look a little vaguely familiar. He doesn't look all that impressive. In fact, it's interesting, scripture says that about Jesus. He had no form or majesty that we should desire. I mean, just a regular looking guy. He walks in the back, but I just want you to imagine maybe there's something a little different about his eyes. Love, holiness. And you see him and he's kind of looking at you, you know. And you're trying to like play it off and just take the next order. But he's getting closer and you're seeing him out of the corner of your eye and eventually he's right in front of you. And you know, sir, burrito or bowl? And he says, follow me. Excuse me?

Follow me. Now I want you to understand, those may sound like simple words to us, but in Jesus's day, coming from that kind of person, these words carried a lot of weight. Let me just describe to you what growing up in that time could have looked like. If you were a Jewish child, you would have started in school at four or five years old. And in your first five years of schooling, you would study the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. And many historians or Bible scholars would say by the time these kids had reached 10 years old, they had memorized most if not all of the Torah. Now I want you to think about that. Leviticus is in the Torah. So you've got eight-year-olds that are like, Leviticus 20, and here they go. I just, I think about that and I'm like, I have no excuses left in my life. If an eight-year-old could do that, what am I doing? So by 10, this is just the baseline. You know the Torah. There's a second level of school where a few students would continue and they're gonna study the rest of the Old Testament, some of the rabbinical teachings and interpretations of the law. But then there's another step reserved for the best of the best.

These are the valedictorians. These are the Ivy League kids. They're the ones that would find a rabbi, a teacher of the law, and he would look at them, and if they were chosen, he would say something like this, follow me, follow me. In fact, the followers of these rabbis, these great wise teachers of the law, were called Talmid or Talmidim. It's a Hebrew word where we get our word disciple. So what was the goal of somebody who responded to that invitation? What was that invitation to them when a rabbi says, follow me? Well, here's what it was, to leave everything, to follow their teacher around, and to become a copy of their teacher. To imitate him, to become like him in all respects. People should hear you talking, and they'd be like, oh, I know who you learned from, because you sound just like him. You act just like him. In fact, there was an ancient saying, a blessing in Jewish culture at the time, that was something like this, may you be covered in the dust of your rabbi. Isn't that a beautiful image? May you follow him so closely that you're unrecognizable. You've just been covered by the dust of his feet.

So back to our story. You're in Chipotle, and Jesus has just looked at you in the middle of the workday and said, follow me, and you know a little bit of what he means when he says that. He's not just saying, hey, walk over here and let's have lunch. He's saying, you don't really know me, but leave your job. Leave what you know. Spend all day, every day, following me around. Leave behind your means of making money. Leave behind your past identity. Leave behind your preconceived notion of what the future would look like. Just follow me. How long, Jesus? No answer. To do what? Not really a lot of clarity. Just follow me and become like me. That's the ask. And I think in that scenario that I just painted for us, if you were in it, if I was in it, and if I even took that partially seriously, you'd think I was a man of great faith. I may say something like, I'll pray about it. I might forget to pray about it. But look at how these guys respond in our text. Jesus shows up in the middle of their work, and he says to them, follow me, and I'm gonna make you fishers of men.

And immediately, they leave their nets and they follow Jesus. Going on from there, he finds two others. They're with their father. They're mending their nets, and what does it say? Immediately, they left the boat and their father, and they followed him. This is the origin story of the followers of Jesus, and here's what bothers me. And I wanna present this question to you this morning. Would I have followed? Would you have followed? I mean, I wanna say that I would. Like, yeah, yeah, I'd respond, but when's the last time God interrupted me like that? Calling me into something I didn't plan or didn't expect, and my response was, I'm dropping everything, and I'm following you. Because if you keep reading these guys' stories, you're gonna see this wasn't just a one-time epic moment. This became a lifestyle of following Jesus into unexpected things. Think about it. They're walking down the road, having a normal day. Jesus sees a little guy up in a tree. Zacchaeus, wait a second, he's a tax collector. I'm coming to your house today. They show up in his house. The kingdom of God shows up. Another day, they're going to a funeral.

They think they're about to mourn with their friend and Jesus' friend, and what happens? Jesus shows up and he says, hey, roll away the stone. What? Lazarus comes walking out. Another day, they're with 5,000 men in a field, plus women and children. Could have been 10, 15,000 people. They're tired. They're wiped out. They're thinking, Jesus, just let them go home and go get food. They're hungry, and Jesus looks at them and he says, you give them something to eat. And they take five loaves and two fish, and we know the story. It's not just these guys. In fact, we can look at the pattern of the Old Testament. I don't have time to unpack it all, but Noah, a man minding his own business. God shows up, build an ark. Abram, a man minding his own business. God shows up, leave your family and go. the land that I'm going to show you. David, runt of the litter, out in the field, didn't get invited to the party when the prophet Samuel shows up. He's a late invite, he walks in, oil on his head, you're gonna be the next king of Israel. This is the pattern.

Here's what I wanna propose to you. If you wanna be Jesus's disciple, he will interrupt your plans and your daily life. He will call you to leave behind your plans and step into his. That's the invitation at the outset of following him, but it's also a daily commitment. In fact, it's the lifestyle of following, of abiding, where your life begins to look less like interruptions and more like a flow, of following the leadership of the Holy Spirit. Maybe the life of a wholehearted disciple could be described a little bit like John 3, verse eight. Where Jesus says, the wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you don't know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Here's my question to us this morning. My push, remember that imagery of the grocery cart? Here's my push question to you today, Antioch Waco. Are you following Jesus in such a way that he has permission to interrupt you? To lead you, to blow you where he will. Are you inviting him to? Are you sensitive to his blowings and his leadings? Because if we're honest, if I'm honest with myself, I can look at seasons of my life, many times we rarely find ourselves interrupted by God, even in small things. Why don't we have those stories in our lives

if this is the pattern? And I wanna just present to you guys today a few things that I'll call barriers to holy interruption in our lives. Things I've seen in my own life. Seen in people we've walked with in DC and Miami and around the world, and maybe not all of these will speak directly to you, but I just have faith by the Holy Spirit. Maybe there's one that you're like, I need that. God, I need you to open my heart again in that area. So here we go. What are some barriers, some blockers to us being interrupted by God following his leading? The first one I wanna present to you is we just may not trust him. I mean, I wanna say I trust Jesus, but how many of you have said that in a song, said that in church, and then push comes to shove, and the wrestle's on? It's a scary thing to give up control. And then we live a little life and we realize we never had any control to begin with, but we feel like we do, right? And I know that people have disappointed me, and I feel like God's disappointed me sometimes, and so I'm just gonna try to hold on to the little bit that I think that I can control. Jeremiah 17, five through nine, speaks to this so powerfully. Here's what it says.

Thus says the Lord, cursed is the man who trusts in man. Can I tell you, I include man. So it's others, but it's also trust in me. It makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. He is like a shrub in the desert, and he will not see any good come. He'll dwell in the parched places of the wilderness in an uninhabitable salt land, but blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water that sends out its roots by the stream. It doesn't fear when the heat comes, for its leaves remain green. It's not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Anybody wanna be that tree? Do we trust him? Can I tell you, this has been so much of my journey. I remember growing up in this church, and as best I knew, authentically responding to God, but for a few years, just doing the church life rhythms. And I remember a day when things dramatically changed for me. I was right across the street. Right across the street, praying as a 10-year-old boy. And it was Easter week, and the kids' ministry was going

through these stations of the cross. And I remember reading a passage in Isaiah 53 that was written on the wall. Just me and a friend in this room. And it said, that surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrow. The punishment that brought us peace was on him and by his wounds we are healed. And I don't know how to describe it, but it was just like suddenly the manifest presence of God was in the room. And the love of God just began to wash over me and I don't know how long I was there. I cried 30, 45 minutes just down on my knees, overcome by the present real love of Jesus. And what I remember is standing up and thinking friendship with God is possible. He's actually this present, this real, and it sent me on a journey. I wanna learn how to be one of those followers. I don't just wanna do the church thing, I wanna fall in love with him and follow him moment by moment, but man, that was tested. It continues to be tested. I remember after high school going to college, I went to Baylor, I got a business degree and I had a job lined up right after college that made all the sense in the world. It was gonna open up a bunch of doors. I was gonna go live in Mexico City

and work for an investment firm and there were a lot of people around me that said, hey, this is what you should do. It makes all the career sense in the world. But around that time, the Syrian refugee crisis broke out. And I don't know if anyone remembers, but about 10 years ago, there were a couple of million people that came from Syria into Europe and we had workers on the front lines working in these refugee camps and we were hearing story after story after story of Muslims having dreams of Jesus. God's showing up in a powerful way. The need was great. And I just remember beginning to feel this tug of God. Like Caleb, you're single, you're available. God's doing something on the earth. I don't know if you've ever felt the tug of the Holy Spirit before, but I couldn't shake it. You know, I keep trying to double down on the thing that I thought I was going to do, but I can't shake. I think this may be the invitation of God to me. But man, it was a wrestle to trust. And I remember sitting in that prayer room right over there, my senior year of college. It was the day I had to make a decision. I'm just on my face, just crying out to God, God, I just need to hear your voice. And I remember the Holy Spirit spoke to me so clearly and he said, Caleb, I put in front of you two options.

Neither is bad, but one leads to success in the eyes of the world, and the other leads to intimacy with me. Which one do you want first? And it was a clarifier for me. I want to build my life on intimacy with Jesus. I just have to believe he is who he says he is. And he's a better leader of my life than I am. So I said no to the thing that I had planned. And yes to that, it changed my life. It changed the trajectory of my life. Friends, do you trust him today? If you don't, if you're honest and there's a wrestle in your soul, he'll take an honest wrestle. Come to him. Help me, Lord. I want to trust you. We may not trust him, few others. We may be distracted. Anybody ever struggle with distraction these days? Couple of things pulling at our attention every second. I want to show you a scripture where Jesus speaks to this. In Mark chapter four, he's sharing a parable about four different kinds of soils, four different kinds of people and hearts that respond to his word. And here's what it says in Mark 4, 18. Others are the ones sown among the thorns.

And they are those, these are these people that hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desire for other things enter in and choke the word and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit 30-fold, 60-fold, and 100-fold. So Jesus is talking about a kind of heart that sees some growth, but because there were undealt with distractions, other things, eventually the fruit is choked out entirely. You may remember in John 15, Jesus says, abide in me and I in you and you will bear much fruit. So what are these things doing? They're choking out the abiding in our lives. Distractions pulling us away from a day-by-day, moment-by-moment connection with Jesus. Man, I could preach a full sermon on each of those, but I hope you heard them. Cares of the world, deceitfulness of riches. This one's scary to me because it's just way too comprehensive. The desire for other things. These things may choke out our responsiveness to God, maybe today. to look at those things again and say, Lord, is there any place in me where the cares of the world or the deceitfulness of riches

or desire for other things has distracted me? We may be distracted. We may not want to hear him interrupt a certain area of our lives. I mean, can we be honest in church? Like, who has AirPods? Anybody have AirPods? Okay, we got a few in the room. So have you ever seen the person with the AirPods in that's walking around and you're trying to talk to them, they're like, you know, like AirPods, noise canceling. They may not even be on noise canceling, but they're sending a message. You know, like I'm not ready to talk right now. Can I, I was thinking about that imagery because if we want to, it may not even be a desire or a pattern we see or recognize in our life, but there may be areas where we don't want to hear God. He may be speaking, but we're sending a signal in our hearts. God, you can talk about a lot of stuff, but don't talk about my finances. God, you can talk about a lot of stuff, but not that relationship. God, you can talk about a lot of stuff, but not my past. Like, I don't want to revisit that. Usually it's because there's places of pain

or fear in our lives, but I just want to encourage you. I want to bring you back to our definition of what following Jesus looks like. To be a Talmud, to be a disciple, it means nothing is off limits to being formed into the image of Jesus. That's the true heart of a disciple. There's no secluded space hidden from him. I'm not saying it's easy, but this is the rest of God. I'm opening that area. Speak into it. Convict, heal, restore. That's what he wants to do. In fact, Jesus says this pretty explicitly in Luke 14, one of the more intense scriptures in the New Testament. He says this, therefore any of you who doesn't renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. The way in is everything. We may not want to hear him. Couple final ones. Maybe we've stopped listening. I know there's a lot of people in the room that have been following Jesus for a while. Maybe you're like me and there's moments where you pause and do an audit of your life and you're like, man, God used to interrupt me all the time.

Like I used to go to the grocery store and I'd see somebody that had a need and my heart was moved and would see God show up. I remember when he pulled me into this thing or that thing, but it's been a really long time since I felt that prompting, that pull of the Holy Spirit. Maybe he's still speaking, but we've stopped listening. Jesus actually said this in Matthew chapter 13. The disciples are asking him why he always talks in parables. And he's gonna say to them, listen, to you it's been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it hasn't been given. For to the one who has, more will be given and he will have an abundance. But from the one who doesn't have, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables because seeing they don't see, hearing they don't hear, nor do they understand indeed. In their case, the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled that says you'll indeed hear, but never understand. You'll see, but never perceive. Here's the phrase that puts the fear of God in me. For this people's heart has grown dull. Friends, if we build a pattern of not responding to God, not responding to those nudges of God, he will allow our hearts to grow dull.

And I've had many times where I had, God, I'm here again. I repent, open my heart, take the callous off, make me sensitive again to what you're doing and speaking. Couple final ones. We may not think that we can hear him. Man, how much of a wrestle is this for so many of us? It's God, I don't even know if I can hear him. I just wanna encourage you with the word of God today. Here's what Jesus says in John chapter 10. He who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and he leads them out. And when he's brought out all his own, he goes before him and the sheep follow him for they know his voice. He says in verse 27, my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. If you're a sheep in this room, you're made to hear his voice. And I just wanna give this to you because it's been so encouraging for me. my journey over the last few years. I remember one time wrestling with hearing God, praying about it, and I just feel like the Holy Spirit just very simply reminds me, Caleb, I am more committed to you being in my will than you are. Even on your best day and your purest motives, don't we think that he wants it more than we do? So I just wanna encourage you,

don't write on your own strength to hear God's voice, just write on his that he wants to speak to you. Open your heart to him. Go on the journey with the people you're walking with and discipleship in your life. I wanna learn how to hear God's voice. You're made for it. This is the promise. And the final one that I wanted to bring to us this morning is we may not think that God can use someone like us. We may not think that God can use someone like us. Man, all these cool stories, they're for the heroes in the Bible, and Jimmy and these other people that stand up here and share cool things that God's doing, but I don't think God could use someone like me. Can I just speak to that this morning? I don't know, but why do I think these disciples were willing to make such a radical step of obedience and following, to leave everything? I think it's because they couldn't believe that Jesus, that a rabbi would call someone like them. Me, I'm not the cream of the crop. Do you know who these guys were? Fishermen, tax collectors, people on the outside, zealots outside of society, not the most likely to succeed. And Jesus saw them and he said, follow me, and their hearts responded.

Guys, you know what I think about growing up in this church? We say this phrase all the time. We're people with a passion for Jesus and his purposes in the earth. Here's what I remember. Person after person after person, encountering God, experiencing his power and his love, and being overwhelmed. Are you kidding me? God, you can use me in my brokenness from my past. You can redeem that. And not only that, you wanna pull me into a story more than just the mundane life that I've been living. There's more for me to be a part of. And their hearts' response is, God, interrupt me. Wherever, whenever, not my dreams anymore, I want yours. That's the pattern that I remember growing up in this church. We just had our US conference this last week. There were 700 people in this room from 55 different churches. And I'm looking around and I'm thinking, how many yeses to Jesus are represented here? You could have never told these folks that they'd be part of a story like that. And that's just the group that's gone and planted churches. How many people have said yes to leaning into their workplace, leaning into their families, reconciling that relationship,

stepping into their neighborhood to bring the glory of God? Guys, this is what I believe God has called this church to be. We're a people with a passion for Jesus that have experienced his love and his grace. And what explodes out of our hearts is God, interrupt me. Wherever, whenever, I wanna be available to you. That's been the pattern for years. And I just wanna give you another push this morning. Is God gonna find another group of people that are willing to be interrupted by him? You don't have to manufacture something. He has a distinct plan for each of us, but are we available? Are we available to him? I wanna end with this story. I mentioned moving to Washington, D.C., and my wife and I, who I met in D.C., wild part of our story, she's from Waco, but we met for the first time in Washington, D.C. We moved up there for work, for graduate school, and as best I knew in my heart, out of obedience to God, God, I just wanna be available to you. And God began to do powerful things. We saw a church planted. We saw so many people restored and redeemed. And in the middle of all that, huge surprise to me, God invited us into the marketplace.

I worked for a couple of years as a researcher in DC, and then in 2020, found myself working in the United States Senate. And I'm working for a member of Congress. My wife now was working for another member of Congress in the House of Representatives, and it was a crazy time to be working in the government, but God just begins to move in such a powerful way, and though it was stressful and intense for a time, we start to find our stride. We're like, this is kind of amazing. Like, we get to bring the kingdom and the love of Jesus in the middle of the chaos and the brokenness around us. God's doing all these beautiful things, but in the middle of that, I remember an interruption. I thought I'd be there for a long time. We're in a prayer time one day, and God begins to speak about Miami. I'd never been to Miami, except for flying through the airport, but we couldn't shake it. We just began to get vision for the city, and so we decided to take a trip down there, and we showed up for three days, and we prayed, and we preached the gospel, and we saw somebody's cancer go into remission, and we saw somebody leave an Eastern Meditation Circle and pick up their mat and walk away and get baptized, and God was just moving, and he began to break our hearts for the city.

I remember months of praying into this and eventually becoming so convicted. Here's what the invitation of God is to us. We're supposed to leave our jobs. We're supposed to leave what we're doing and follow him to Miami, and we moved down there with eight people in an Airbnb in a little neighborhood and just began to pray. Say, God, we need you to do something, and he's been faithful to his word, and three years later, we have a church, and God's transforming people in such a powerful way, and this last week, I showed you guys the photo of some of our team that came down to Waco, and we're sitting in a room just debriefing some of what God was speaking to each of them, and one of the guys on our team that we had met in Miami, he had been deep in witchcraft and in new age, every kind of brokenness in his life, and God had just reached in and rescued this man, and he's sitting there, and he begins to cry, and he said, he said, I just wanna say something real quick, and my mom and dad were there, and he looks at them, and he says, I wanna thank you guys for saying yes to Jesus because you said yes, and then Caleb and Sierra said yes, and others said yes, and he said,

I don't know if I'd be alive today if you hadn't. Why do I share that story? Because it matters that we're interruptible to God. That we're available to him. He's looking for unlikely people. God, find them here. Find it in me again. So I just wanna invite us to stand as we respond to God, and if our prayer teams could come up. Just hang with me for a second. As we respond to God in this moment, I know there are people here in the room, you may have been hearing me talk, and you're like, I don't even know what it means to have a relationship with God like that, and I just believe for some of us, today's a day where we need to have a relationship with God like that, and I just wanna say, I just wanna say, and I just believe for some of us, today's the day for you to be interrupted for the first time. God's here. He wants to interrupt you. He wants to reach into the pain and the brokenness in your life, and bring you to himself. So if that's you, I wanna take a moment just to lead you to Jesus,

and if you know Jesus in this room, if you could just join in with me by praying. Praying that hearts would open to God as we remember what he's done for us. You see, very simply, we've all been trapped in our brokenness and our sin, and God so wanted to redeem us and rescue us that he came himself, that he sent Jesus. Jesus lived a perfect life. He never did anything wrong, and he died on the cross, and scripture says that when he died, he took on himself our grief, our sorrow, our pain, the punishment that brought peace to us, and healing to us, but he didn't stay dead. Three days later, he raises from the dead, and the Bible says, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you're going to be saved, and if you're here this morning, and you've never responded to that invitation, I just wanna lead you in a simple prayer. You can pray these words right after me. They're not magic words, but if this reflects your heart, And you're willing to be interrupted by God today.

Just pray this with me. Lord Jesus, I need you. I confess that I've sinned. I see the brokenness in my life and I need your healing. I believe you died on the cross for me. I believe you rose from the dead. And I believe you're alive today and I wanna make you the Lord of my life. Jesus, come lead me. Come enter my heart and make me new. Hey, if you prayed that prayer, we wanna pray for you. Come down, grab a friend that you came with. Say, hey, will you come with me? And just let somebody put a hand on your shoulder and pray for you. For the rest of us here, maybe you've already had a relationship with Jesus, but it's a day to open your heart again to the interruptions of God. I don't know which of those things we talked about resonated with you. Maybe it's time to start listening again. Maybe it's time to say, God, I've blocked off a part of my heart, but I'm gonna open it up to you. Come speak, come lead. I don't know what that place is, but I wanna encourage you to respond. It's the beauty of the cross. We can just come with the places we've missed it.

Say, Lord, wash me with your grace. And he has a fresh start available for us today. And lastly, if you're in this room and you came with any need at all, maybe you need physical healing, maybe there's brokenness in your family, come down. We've got people that want to pray for you as we worship this morning. Fill up the gaps and spaces for healing and restoration. Put hope again in every heart, Lord. Put hope again in every heart for your purpose and your will and your desires and your designs. Lord, we leave this place. We leave this place with honor and glory to you. All honor and glory to you.
