Life in the Spirit | Life in the Spirit Week 10

In 1999, a 33-year-old man by the name of Robert Bogucki walked away from a stop in Western Australia and into the desert. First, no one thought much of it, but days turned into weeks. Then someone found an abandoned bicycle from him over 300 miles from where he was last seen, so the search began. Helicopters scanned a landscape that looked like Mars, dry and endless. Temperatures were brutal, no water, no shelter, and no sign of him. His parents, desperate, sent a rescue team from the U.S. to help. Weeks had passed, then one afternoon, a pilot spotted something under a desert shrub, a blue bedroll, and tied to it a Bible next to one word spelled out in rocks, HELP. He had been alone in the desert for 43 days, dehydrated and near death. He went there believing that this was a spiritual journey, and after seven weeks, he was found barely alive. Could it be possible that some people in this room are facing a desert right now, and you're wondering, how did I get here? We understand what it means to be in a desert because something in us recognizes those moments that we experience in life, but not every wilderness, not every desert journey is spirit-led, and not every pursuit in life leads to life. A desert is a season where our character, and our faith, and our strength will be tested. Why? Because deserts expose what's really inside of us. They'll expose what is the first thing we're going to run to when we're thirsty, when we're hungry. What's the first thing that we're going to run to when in life we're struggling with coming up with the answers? Because in life, yes, in a real desert, water and food would help, but in life, you cannot have enough water. You cannot have enough food when your marriage is struggling. You cannot have enough money when there's no peace in your relationship with your children. So deserts reveal to us what is the first thing that we run to. But unlike Robert's story, in life's deserts, there's no one watching out for us. There's no helicopter that is going to come and pull us out of that season that we go

through in our life. And the question for all of us today is not if, if we're going to face a desert. The question is, what are you bringing with you when you get there? What have you filled your life with, and will that be able to sustain you when you go through hardship in life? I want us to pray, and then we'll continue. Father, I thank you that your word is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. And I pray that today that it brings the vision between our heart and our flesh, between our spirit and our flesh, so that we hear from you. So that our ears are open, not just to hear the words of a man, but to hear the words from your spirit today, God. And I pray that it brings healing and restoration to our life. In the name of Jesus, we pray, amen. I want to welcome everyone that's watching from our Edmonton campus. I want to welcome those of you that are here online. Life in the Spirit, as we've been talking about, sounds like it's a great life to live,

but I want to remind you that life in the Spirit does not remove deserts. Life in the Spirit does not remove trials. It does not remove temptations. It does not even remove doubt. But the desert is not the dangerous part. The dangerous part is arriving at the desert unprepared. When you realize that what's inside you will not be able to sustain you. And we're gonna look at the book of Luke, chapter three and chapter four, that talks about Jesus right after baptism. Jesus goes into the desert for 40 days and 40 nights without food and without water. And there's a statement that Luke four says that when you read it, you realize all of Jesus' ministry hinges upon this statement. You could almost even say that all of the New Testament, which is a big statement to make, all of the New Testament hinges on this one statement. Luke says, he, speaking of Jesus, he returned in the power of the Spirit. Every miracle, every single moment, from defeating the devil in the desert, from turning water into wine, from feeding the 5,000, from healing the leopard, from raising Lazarus from the dead, from going to the cross, from being resurrected, all of those moments flow from this reality

that we're gonna be talking about today. It was the fact that Jesus was led by the Spirit, he was full of the Spirit, and he was empowered by the Spirit. So everybody say full, led, empowered. Luke chapter three, verse 21 says, now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while he was praying, heaven was open, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, saying, you are my beloved son, and you I am well pleased. Now, how many of us know somebody who loves to tell stories, but doesn't know how to tell the short version? We're in church. How many of you, that's you? Let's be honest, okay, you tell stories. See, so my wife and I tell this story, my wife is so cute and adorable, she tells me, just get to the point. Just get to the point, I don't like fluff, don't waste words, just get to the point, okay? How many of you guys are, just get to the point on people? Okay, well, you're in luck today, because my message, I'm not gonna build it up, I'm just gonna start with the point, okay? From the very beginning, I'm gonna tell you, this is the end goal, this is why we're here,

and this is it, and then, we're gonna walk backwards, in reverse, to go a little bit deeper, kind of like those nesting dolls, we're gonna pull one truth at a time until we get to the beginning, not just on how we get to here, to the end, but really, how we start. So, Luke chapter four tells us the end goal for our life. How do we have life in the spirit? Luke four tells us, and it says this, now, Jesus, fool of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness. Now, let's go to verse 14. It says, and Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding region. Power, everybody say power. It's something we all want, it's something we should all want, because it's definitely something that we all need, and by power, I don't mean like a title, like authoritative power, I don't mean like influence, I mean the actual power that gives us the ability to change a life. That's power that we need. What do you mean, Pastor Roscoe? Power to have a better marriage. We need power. Power to run a business with integrity.

We need power. Power to be the parents we wish we had growing up. We need power. Power to stop struggling in the same areas and the same cycles over and over again. Power to have. a different marriage than the one we came from. That requires supernatural power and that's how Jesus lived in supernatural living. That's what we call life in the spirit. Life in the spirit is not life in the normal, but it's supernatural living. Can any of us live life to the full without the Holy Spirit? Can any of us live life to the full in our own strength? So what does God desire for my life if I'm going to follow Him? A life in the spirit is recognizing this, is being empowered by the Spirit. That's the end result. Jesus walked out in the power of the Holy Spirit. Empowered by the Spirit, it means that I'm no longer just striving out of my own strength, just out of pure will that I'm gonna change this or overcome this, not in my own strength. I'm not relying on my experience or my knowledge. I'm living on mission with God's power at work in me. Luke chapter four says this, in the scroll of Isaiah, the prophet was handed to him. This is speaking of Jesus.

And he unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord. And then listen to this verse. It says, and he, Jesus, rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him. What Jesus said was powerful enough, and then what He did was even more powerful. And let me explain that, why. Because in Jewish tradition, rabbis would read a scripture and then they would sit down to interpret that scripture. So by when a rabbi sat down, that meant that people would get around and say, please explain this to us, what does it mean? So when Jesus walks into the synagogue and reads this 700-year-old prophecy that all of the Jews had memorized, that they were very well familiar with, when He reads it, they're all like, man, this is good. But then Jesus sits down and says this, this prophecy is not just gonna be interpreted by me, it's going to be fulfilled by me. So that's why the people were like,

what just happened right now? How could Jesus do that? He hasn't raised anybody from the dead yet. He hasn't performed all these crazy miracles that at least you will think, Jesus, do your miracles first, and then step up and say, hey, by the way, this is fulfilling you. No, Jesus begins right from the very beginning, why? Because of what Luke 4 says, He was empowered of the Spirit, and out of the desert, He performs the turning water into wine and then walks into the synagogue, why? How can Jesus be so confident of the purpose to which He was called to? He was confident because of the power of the Spirit. Like Pastor John says, that's gangsta. God wants to empower you. God doesn't just wanna send His Son to save you and then be like, good luck, you got this. No, you don't, you don't got this. You don't got nothing else, that's really bad English, and my wife is just staring at me right now. We're gonna have a conversation during lunch, I can promise you that. Ephesians 3 says this, I pray that from His glorious unlimited resources, He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. Power is not the ability to perform or do something, it is the strength to overcome,

and we all need His Spirit to help us overcome, but power, even though that's the end result, we don't start with power. It's not the beginning, why? Because before we walk in the power of the Spirit, we have to first be led by the Spirit. Remember, Jesus was full, He was led, and then He was empowered. That means we live with intentional forward movement. in God's kingdom. We're not just reacting to the enemy's attack. We're not just responding and hoping the enemy leaves us alone. We're advancing in faith. And I love this story because the showdown between Jesus and the devil did not start by the devil. It's not like the devil was like looking around and being like, you carpenter, me and you, let's go now. Cash me outside in the desert. It was not like that. The Bible says that the initiator of this fight, of this conflict, the promoter of this fight was a cute little dove. The dove led Jesus into the desert to confront the devil. Jesus, the son of God, was on the offense. He was looking for trouble. And he found it. So I know this story makes it look like the devil is in charge and is like, the devil's trying to show up.

No, it was because of Jesus' authority that the devil even had the audacity to bring those things to him. But it was Jesus who started the fight. How could he do that? He could do that because he was led by the spirit. The same way that in the book of Acts, the church is marked by the spirit's power and the church started ministry beyond that, the same way Jesus was marked by the spirit before he began his ministry. Galatians 5 says this. But I say, walk in the spirit, by the spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the desire of the flesh is against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh. For those who are in opposition to one another in order to keep you from doing whatever you want, but you are led by the spirit, you are not under the law. That means that, hey, this is not a religion thing. Being led by the spirit, that means that he's gonna help you little by little so you can get better. If you mess up, you can still get better and can still be led by the spirit. Verse 19, now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, idolatry, witchcraft, hostility, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition,

dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, anybody's toes feeling a little sore right now, and things like this, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Who are those who practice such things? Those who are led by the flesh and not by the spirit. In other words, it's telling you, you don't have to follow the flesh. You don't have to be the same. You can be led by the spirit of God. What happens when you're led by the spirit of God? Well, the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things, there is no law. Now, those who belong to Christ Jesus crucify the flesh with its passions and desires, and then it says this. If we live by the spirit, let's follow the spirit as well. Now, I understand there's spiritual warfare, and I'm very much a believer in spiritual attacks. We live in a spiritual realm. Our battle is not against flesh and blood. But have you met somebody that it seems like they're always running from the devil because the devil is always after them? You've met somebody that's like,

man, the devil's right after me. He's after my marriage. He's after my kids. He's after my car. He's after my dog. Man, I cannot get rid of the devil. And even though I'm a very strong believer in spiritual warfare, there are times when the things that we're faced with, the deserts that we go through, it is not a spiritual attack from the enemy. It is not spiritual warfare. What we're facing are simply the consequences of poor choices that we made when we were not being led by the spirit, we were being led by the flesh. I wonder, Pastor John said, even the devil sometimes is looking like, I didn't do that. I'll take credit for it, but I didn't definitely do that. That was all you. And sometimes we need that spiritual maturity to know when we're not walking by the spirit. So I'm gonna give you three quick nuggets to help us with that, to remind us. The first one is this. The Holy Spirit doesn't just come to comfort you. He comes to confront what's in you. Number two, being led means you don't always get to choose a destination.

How many of us? say amen to that and number three God will often lead you into places your flesh would avoid but your calling requires every decision every response we have to consider the spirits direction not fear not impulse not personality why because even deserts that we go through they can be part of our spiritual formation if we let him not every desert is a spiritual attack some are divine assignments but being led by the spirit requires even another layer to be searched for to be removed why because you cannot be consistently be led by the spirit if you're not first full of the spirit Jesus was full of the spirit he was led by the spirit and then he was empowered by the spirit being full of the spirit is not an emotional moment fullness is not spiritual hype it's not spiritual intensity fullness is not praying super loud and saying hallelujah or praying in the King James and I'm if you pray in the King James more power to you I'm not attacking you I'm just saying that does not necessarily fullness fullness simply means constant awareness it is a steady and settled consciousness that I am a child of God when I wake up in the morning I know who I am in Christ when I go to bed I know who I am I am constantly aware that my life is not my own I've been bought with a price I am constantly aware that I've been given purpose into God's kingdom because of the blood of Jesus I have purpose in my life not what the world wants me to do but what Jesus has called me to do being full of the spirit means that I have my life carries kingdom purpose Ephesians 5 says so then be careful how you walk not as unwise people but as wise making the most of your time because the days are evil therefore do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is and do not get drunk with wine in which there is debauchery but be filled with the Spirit and fullness sometimes is misunderstood I think in church especially in in some of the more charismatic churches fullness is misunderstood because fullness is not intensity it's not acting super spiritual and how many because I met someone who's very spiritual but doesn't carry the fruit of the Spirit the Greek work for that is jerks just keep your eyes on me okay just don't look to the right or to the left rudeness is not a fruit of the Spirit I just feel like they don't want me to remind somebody that it's not when we don't get the food that we order at the restaurant it's not when the person in front of us took two extra seconds after the light turned green it's not when the

15 year old referee made a bad call on our superstar little cute adorable eight-year-olds team because listen it's easy to be full of the Spirit inside church it's real easy when we got this worship band and it's man it's awesome to be filled with the Spirit but because there is constant awareness we're always full of the Spirit remember the dub we don't want to do anything to scare it away fullness is not perfection it's consistency to be full of God the Spirit of God is to have God in everything that we do he has a voice and influence in everything that we do that means God is not just okay Acknowledged, but he's constantly relied upon and Let's be honest. Some people treat God as if he lives in assisted living We only check on him once a month just to stay connected Some of us just treat the Holy Spirit like he was divorced in the past So he only has visiting rights every once in a while and every time we need him We need him for this or we need him for that we're gonna make a call because that's his job to step in where we messed up and And being full of the Spirit requires a constant awareness that he is a third person of the Trinity Therefore he's a person that can easily become offended by what we do But yet even being full of the Spirit, it's not the beginning there's another another layer Before we can be full of the Spirit we must be empty Being Empty means that you intentionally remove some stuff from your life to make room for God How many of you guys have ever moved multiple times from from from your house I think I was trying to count we moved like five or six times and the problem with moving one of them is that there are some things that you put in a box and Then when you move to the next house, sometimes they remained unopened and then at the next house you gather new boxes and Since so when you move to the third house now you have more boxes See, I'm not making eye contact with my wife. I'm not like prophetically saying anything to you right now I'm just it was the Lord. Okay. I'm just saying it was the Lord if the Lord still speaks to you, whatever

I'm just saying I'm just a vessel right now We've moved five and so we got some boxes so we got some boxes and Sometimes your ears go by and you forget what those boxes are even there But you know that you just scared him from from that place that you Experienced that one time when you went through that thing and then you box it up and say I'm just I'm not gonna think About this anymore. I'm not gonna deal with it But you carry it with you and your relationship with God and years have come and God says I want to fill you But you said but God is looking at your life and said you already fool You're full of bitterness You're full of pain You're full of shame You're full of things from your past and I want to fill you but you've got to remove some stuff from your life You've got to make space in your room for God and for God Some of us need to make room and space for God in our schedule God wants to fill you but you don't give him time God wants to Have a say in your faith and your schedule in your career and your finances in your marriage and your parenting But you've got to make room for that. It's not gonna happen automatically Heavers 12 one says this therefore since we're surrounded by such a great crowd of witnesses Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin That so easily entangles So many of us know exactly what sin is and we know what what we do that separates us from God But I don't believe that's a main issue here with many of us trying to To empty our lives I Think sometimes the most things that we're struggle are not things that are simple But things that still have the power to hinder us If you would ask the pastor I Enjoy doing this I do this all that, you know There's some good things in my life that God has made available for me. Is it sinful? Absolutely not

But the question is that is it sinful? The question is is it strengthen me my walk with the Lord is a strengthening my marriage is a strengthening my relationship with kids with my kids Or is it hindering it? Man, I've met a lot of amazing amazing golf players who had a very poor relationship with their family Is golf a sin absolutely not unless you watch me play then we can talk about that later But the problem is that some things get in the way of what should be more important in your life So my question is for you what's in your life right now? That is not a sin. That is actually That is hindering your living Some death you might think that life might be good for you, but that it's hindering you How can I be filled with the spirit? And it might not be that God isn't feeling, it might be that we are full of something already. Some of us are asking why Why can't I live as I should? Because here's what we must understand. I'm not the alpha male Whatever fills you, forms you. Is it money? Is it lust? Is it greed? Is it shopping? Is it Amazon? Is it DoorDash? Oh. Is it Big Macs? Okay, I'll stop. But you have to realize, emptiness is not accidental. It's intentional. It requires decision.

So how am I gonna be empowered by the spirit? Here's the very first step. If you wanna be empowered by the spirit, you gotta be led by the spirit. If you gotta be led by the spirit, you gotta be full of the spirit. If you wanna be full of the spirit, you gotta empty yourself. If you wanna be empty, you start with surrender. Surrender is the willingness to lay something down in my life. The issue is not really that God isn't leading. The issue is that we haven't let go. Because the truth is, we cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit while clinging to what already fills us. Matthew 16 says, and Jesus said to his disciples, if anyone wants to come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it. But whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul? Surrender says, God, you can have all of me, not just the parts that I'm willing to give. Here's the reality. Jesus does not co-inhabit with rivals. He reigns, he must be Lord so that he can reign. And as I was thinking about this,

as I was prepping for this, I began to look at my own life and ask, what are some of the times that I've struggled with surrender? And the moments that I've struggled most with surrender weren't really about spiritual discipline or about faith. They were more about trust. And if I'm honest, at the root of my resistance, it wasn't rebellion, it was fear. The reason why I couldn't surrender is because I was afraid. I was afraid that if I let go, God is not gonna come through. Pastor John spoke that I'm in tithing last week. I felt like sometimes I remember starting my tithing journey, and I was afraid, if I give this away, what if I don't have enough at the end of the month? I was afraid that if I let go, God is not gonna show up. I was afraid that what I was holding onto was better than what God would offer me. So I held on. Not because it was good, not because it's satisfied, I held on because it was familiar. Because it was something that I could see. It was something I could control. It was something I could manage. I was in control. So I told myself, I can keep myself safer than whatever God can do. But the truth is, I was not really protecting my life.

I was limiting it, and I was shrinking it. And my faith was becoming weaker because every time I refused to surrender, what I was really saying is, God, I'm not sure I'm worth your love. If I surrender, I'm not sure your love is gonna come from me, because I'm not sure I'm as lovable as you say I am. And that's the tension that we struggle. Our level of surrender is directly connected with our level of understanding God's love for us. And we struggle with it because surrender doesn't feel like gaining, it feels like losing. It feels like stepping into the unknown, empty-handed. Now what, God? I've stepped out, I've removed, now what? But here's what I've learned. God never asks you to empty your hands without already preparing something better to fill them. The problem, come on. The problem is that we try to hold on to. both worlds. We want the Spirit's power but we still want to keep control. We want to be led but only to places we get to approve. We want fullness but we don't want to be empty. It doesn't work that way. We can't be filled with God while clinging to that which competes with Him. The question isn't, does God want to fill me, to lead me, or to empower me? Of course He does. The question is, am I willing to let go and surrender? Because when you finally release it, when you finally surrender, that's when you make room. That's where the space is created. And when there's room, the Holy Spirit will fill it. And when the Spirit fills it, then He'll lead you. And when He'll lead you, wherever He'll lead you, He'll empower you to do that which you

don't think you're able to do on your own. Because to be honest, we can't unless He steps in. We need to be empowered with the Holy Spirit but that requires surrender. Luke 11 says, so I say to you, ask and it will be given to you. And it's not talking about materialism. Listen. Seek and you will find. Knock and it will be open to you. For everyone who asks, receives. And the one who seeks, finds. And to the one who knocks, it will be open. Now which of you fathers will his son ask for a fish, but instead of a fish you will give him a snake? Or will he even ask for an egg and his father will give him a scorpion? God's about to teach us something powerful. He says, so if you despise being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? Why does He not bring the Holy Spirit? Because He knows we can do it on our own. And maybe you're in a desert today, but whether you're in a desert or not is not the point. You have to ask yourself, what I fill my life with, is it going to sustain me? Robert Boguchi walked into the desert believing he was on a spiritual journey. He brought conviction. He brought belief. He even brought his Bible. But after 43 days, even religion could not sustain him. So he was found barely alive. On the other hand, when Jesus went into the desert, he did not go by himself. He was never alone. He was full of the Spirit and His power. One man had to be rescued in the desert. Another man came to the desert and defeated the devil, so that when you and I find ourselves in the desert of sin, deprivation, or rebellion, running away from God, we have a Savior who has come who knows the way out of the desert to bring us life in power to defeat the enemy when we put our trust in Jesus. We're going to go into a time of response, and I'd like for us to prepare our hearts. Because many of us came, we come to church, and it becomes a thing that we do on Sundays. But when God asks you, would you surrender something, you say, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll do it later. And that later becomes, turns into five years. And you're carrying the weight. Some of us come and we surrender, but there's still some things that we've allowed in our life that God is saying, it's time to empty it. You've been carrying that for too long. That doesn't belong in your relationship with God. That hinders you right now. And some of you guys have done that. You've surrendered, you've emptied, and you're like,

so now what do I do? Now it's time for you to allow the Holy Spirit to fill you, to really understand what it means to have a relationship with the Holy Spirit, to experience fullness, consistent, constant awareness. Many of you guys have been asking, I mean, I don't know what to do. Well, maybe because you haven't let the Holy Spirit lead you. And there's an invitation that it says, He has a plan for you, and you were created for kingdom purpose. It doesn't matter what your past is. There's kingdom purpose in you, but you need the Holy Spirit to lead you so that you can fulfill it. There's a song, That says these words it says I'm removing all of the things That would move me further from you. I Thank you could not be enough. It's not lost on me. What do you save me from? I'm running Stumbling I know but I'm coming to give you this offering my worship. I'll never withhold Broken, but you call it beautiful Where the tears of the desperate? Reach the feet of the Savior There's nothing I wouldn't up because there's no ways that the altar When the heart of surrender meets the hands of the maker Nothing, I wouldn't offer because there's no waste at the altar Let me invite you to stand And man, would you please stand with me? Would you please stand with me? Our prayer team is gonna come forward because we're gonna spend a moment of prayer and reflection, but here's how we get to response Just like the song says We must come to an altar And so that's why we call this place an altar because we bring an offering we bring a sacrifice And I believe what God is asking of you is do you have something to lay down today? And surrender, maybe it's your heart. Maybe it's your life. Maybe it's an attitude. Maybe it's a habit I don't it doesn't matter what is maybe it's something good, but you must surrender it to him Because it's getting in the way so that you can become empty God is asking some of you to respond and say what is what things in your life that you be?

That you need to get rid of so that you can make room for God. Maybe it's your schedule Maybe it's a conversation with your spouse saying hey Can we start praying about this now Before we make this decision instead of just assuming things can we involve the Holy Spirit in our lives? maybe some of you need to come and respond because you want to experience what it means to be full of the Holy Spirit because You haven't experienced that yet Maybe some of you already full of the Holy Spirit But the next step is for you to come and respond and say the Holy Spirit. Would you lead me? Would you lead me in this Transaction would you leave me in this decision? Would you leave me in in my marriage? Would you leave me in how what do I need to do with my children? What I need to do with with this issue of work. Would you lead me? As I'm looking to what college I need to go what career I need. Would you lead me in this relationship? I don't know if I be the right one. Would you lead me? Would you lead me? Regardless of how it is. I'm gonna invite you to come forward and Worship some of you may need that you may feel like man. I don't know what to do I don't know how to pray come and find one of our prayer team members and as we worship let this song become our anthem But don't let this moment pass by Without giving an opportunity for the Holy Spirit To show what he can do in your life.
