Killing Kryptonite

Get ready to receive a word from God. Thank you, my friend. Good morning. Good morning. Hey, everybody stay standing. I always love praying before bringing the word. Can I tell you how happy I am to be here? I'll just let you in on a secret. This is one of my favorite churches in the United States. You are amazing. And as you know, there's a guy around here that teaches that everything falls and rises on leadership. Right? And I have to say, when I was a kid, I used to go to church. I used to go to church. I used to go to church. I used to go to church. I used to go to church. I used to go to church. I used to go to church. I used to go to church. I used to go to church. And as you know, there's a guy around here that teaches that everything falls and rises on leadership. Right? And I have to say this. When I look at Pastor Todd and Pastor Julie, I see not only great visionaries, great leaders, great motivators, but very humble, kind, and compassionate people. And that is an amazing, amazing combination. And I just want to say this.

I mean, you heard it. I'm family. John is in the house today, baby. Just I would never want you to take for granted what a team that God has given you. And it's reflected through the entire team. This worship up here this morning was just off the charts. I mean, there is, there is sanctuaries that the Holy Spirit comes, you know, out of obligation. And then there's other places he comes because he likes it. This is one of the ones he likes it. Okay. So I just want to say this and I'd love to say more, but I've got something that I really have in my heart to bring you this morning. And my heart is that I don't want to just bring a message. I want to see our lives change forever. And so I want to ask whether you're watching online or you're here this morning, can we believe together? Because I could be the greatest communicator on the planet, but if we don't have the Holy Spirit touch these words, it's just information. We need transformation. So let's pray and believe for God to do that this morning, father, in the name of Jesus. Thank you so much for this church, Lord, what a bright light this church is in Southern Florida to the whole nation and to the nations of the world. You love this church and I'm asking it this morning, Holy Spirit, that you would do what you love to do the most. And that is reveal Jesus to us in a way like we've never known him before. As you do this, may we go from glory to glory. May our lives be changed forever as a result of what you do. And for this, we give you all the glory and the honor and the praise and the thanksgiving. And it's in Jesus mighty name. We pray and everybody that agrees, shouts, come on, give him praise for what he's about

to do. Amen. Amen. You can be seated. Faster than a speeding bullet, bending steel with his bare hands, Superman, what if we are more like him than we realize? Think about it. Superman draws his strength from the sun. We draw our strength from Jesus Christ, the sun. Superman is not from this world. As a child of God, we are not of this world. Superman possesses supernatural powers. We are supernaturally empowered, but hold up. One thing had the power to stop Superman bringing the previously invincible down to his knees, kryptonite. Is it true? Superman, our strength is being robbed, neutralizing our power and making us weak. Could it be kryptonite has invaded our lives, taken root? Could it be? All right. So I didn't set out to write a book on kryptonite. I actually was doing an in-depth study of the church of Corinth and I found out something that even though Superman and kryptonite are fictional, spiritual kryptonite is very, very real. I started discovering some things as I was really doing this in in-depth study that the church in Corinth really didn't impact its community. It didn't change the city of Corinth. If you look at the early church in the first 12 books of Acts, they were literally winning entire cities to the Lord. The entire city of Lydda, Sharon, Joppa, the entire city of Samaria was affected, but not

the church of Corinth. They were affected by this thing called spiritual kryptonite. Paul writes them and he deeply loves this church and he's dealing and he's addressing with the issues that they're having. I mean, they're divided, they have favorite preachers, they're quarreling, they are suing one another, there is sexual immorality going on. And so Paul finally writes to them and says, for this reason, many of you are weak. So they've come in contact with this spiritual kryptonite. Are you seeing what he's saying? But here's the really good news. Are you ready for this church? Ready for this family? Daniel has a vision of the last days. And do you know what he says about the church in the last days? He says, the people who know their God shall be strong. Everybody say strong. Strong. The Corinth church was weak. He says they're gonna be strong and carry out not just exploits, but great exploits. Now the key to this is that word no. Do you see how I have that underlined? The Hebrew word there for no is the Hebrew word yada. Now this is an amazing word. Yada means to know somebody intimately. It is used frequently in the Old Testament in regard to God knowing our hearts. How many of you know God knows all about your heart even more than you do?

Correct? It is used in Genesis chapter four verse one where it says Adam knew his wife Eve and they conceived. The most intimate the two human beings can be on earth, the word yada is used to describe that. Now I think it's interesting that it happens with a husband and a wife here, Adam and Eve, because God uses marriage imagery frequently in the Bible to describe our relationship with him. If you look at the Old Testament, God is constantly making statements like, your creator is your husband. If you look at the apostle Paul, he writes in Ephesians five and says, for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and the two shall be joined and they shall be one flesh. But then he says, but this is actually an illustration of the way the church and Jesus Christ are one. Now with that in mind, I want you to watch this short video. That castle. Really? Isn't that phenomenal? So they taught you how to fold the napkins? Yes. Oh wow. I actually, believe it or not, I know how to fold the Sydney Opera House. I don't believe you. No, no, I really do. I can totally show you.

Jealous? Angela, in case you forgot, we're married. Okay, and we spend the majority of our time together. I love you more than any of my other boyfriends. That's why you'll always be my favorite. These guys need to go, and we need to talk. We're done. I cannot believe this. You are being so selfish. Selfish, I. Why do you always have to make everything about you? You ruined our favorite restaurant. Excuse me, sorry. Yeah, I've still never been to this restaurant. Okay, it's almost absurd, right? So, but let me ask you a question. How many of you would want to be married to somebody like that? Let me see your hands. Nobody? I mean, she's really pretty. Why is it that you wouldn't want to be married to her or someone like that? I mean, she does spend most of her time with him. She does love him more than the others. He is her favorite. The reason, and I'll answer your question for you, is because her loyalty is still divided. Now, we would never marry someone like that. What makes you think Jesus is coming back for a bride like that? If you think Jesus is coming back for a bride like that, you're as deceived as she is. See, when a woman gets married, when she puts on a white dress

and walks down an aisle of a church, she's making a statement. She's saying goodbye to every man on the planet, except for the guy that's waiting for her. She gives her entire heart and life to him. Jesus isn't coming back for a bride that has other lovers. He's coming back for a bride that has given her heart to him the way he has given his heart and his life to her. So Paul finally has to write to this Corinthian church, and he says this. He says, many, remember he said many of you are weak. He said many of you have not given up your old sins, your old boyfriends. You have not repented, everybody say repented, of your impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure. Now, can I say this? When you mention the word repentance today in the church, people go, ah, it's almost like a cuss word. And there's good reason for it. It's because legalism has beat people up so harshly and cruelly with this word. But can I say something? I have discovered that repentance is probably one of the most beautiful words in the Bible other than the name of Jesus, okay? First of all, in the New Testament, it's clear. It is a gift, and God doesn't give gifts to the children he loves that's a cruel gift. Are you seeing what I'm saying, right?

And so the word repentance is the Greek word metanoia. It's found over 50 times in the New Testament. It simply means this, a change of mind. But if you leave it just as that, you don't see the depth of this word. I love what Baker Encyclopedia says. Repentance is a change in the whole personality. So in other words, it's not just a change of mind. It goes deeper. It goes to the mind, excuse me, to the will, to the emotions. It penetrates even to your heart, okay? You're persuaded from the core of your being. This is why Jesus makes the statement, from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, and lying. If repentance is just a change of mind, Jesus would have said, from the mind come all these things. I love how Pastor Todd says it. Pastor Todd says repentance is when we do an about face. From the very core of our being, we are persuaded, and now we are going a different direction. What is the different direction that we go? If you look at the unrepented person, the unrepented person says this, I choose what is good, best, and right for my life. The repented person says, I choose what God says is good, best, right in my life. Do you see the difference?

Now, that is a decision we make from the very depths of our being. The video was kind of absurd, right? I mean, if you think about it, she was just as shocked as Justin was. Now, and she's the one that actually left the table, right? How could this actually play out? How could this happen in a real world? It's very simple. If the people in Angela's life, namely her family, her friends, and her teachers, never taught her that in order to enter a marriage covenant, you have to say goodbye to all your old boyfriends and make the decision not to develop any new boyfriends. Correct? When I look at the American church, and when I mean the American church, I'm talking about several of the churches in America, not all, because let me tell you something. This church is not this way, but I wanna just tell you what we're fighting with. here. Okay. With several churches, when we preach Jesus, we almost preach him like a used car salesman. We say what he'll do for us, right? And it is the goodness of God that leads the repentance. So we should do that, but we stop right there and we don't call for people to make a heart change. We're not calling for the people to say, okay, wait a minute. I'm going to make the decision that girl makes to say goodbye to every guy on the planet. That's the about face the pastor Todd talks about. If you look at Jesus, the first words out of his mouth in his public ministry were repent for the kingdom of heaven's at hand. Now I'm going to show you a little pattern in the Bible that absolutely is amazing. If you look at Matthew chapter 11, it says,

Jesus began to denounce the towns where he had done so many of his miracles because now watch this. They hadn't repented of their sins and turned to God. So in other words, the only way to turn to God is to repent of sins. Are you seeing that now? I want you to notice this pattern. I'm going to walk through the scripture and you're going to see this pattern all through the scripture. If you look at the disciples, when Jesus sent them out two by two, we read in Mark six 12. So the disciples went out telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God. If you look at the rich man in hell, he's already in hell forever. There is no ever getting out for him. He looks at Abraham and says this, no father Abraham, but if someone is sent to my five brothers from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God. Are you seeing this? If you look at Peter on the day of Pentecost, the people said, what do we do to get saved? He said, each of you must not should not it's recommended. It's a great idea. Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God. If you look at the apostle Paul, who was given the revelation of grace, he said, I preach first of those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all of Judea and also to the Gentiles that all must not should must repent of their sins and turn to God. How about God the father? I think he would be one to listen to. If you look at act 1730, God overlooked people's ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands doesn't recommend. He commands everyone everywhere that includes South Florida to repent of their sins and turn to him. I think you're seeing a biblical truth. And that is this. There is no true faith in Jesus Christ without repentance. See, if you look at the elementary doctrine of the church in Hebrews chapter six, it says there's six elementary doctrines that the whole church is built on. The first one, the first layer of the foundation is repentance of dead works. The next one is faith in God. So in other words, there's no faith in God, no true faith in God without repentance. Good preaching, John. Thank you very much. I just got to get you to breathe. Some of you aren't breathing right now. I just need you to breathe. Paul finally writes to this Corinthian church. You know what? Before I actually go there, I want to show you the attitude of somebody who's truly repentant. The person that's truly repentant says, I've lived as the one who judges what is best for me. No more from this

moment forward, no matter what God says is best, I will believe and embrace it with all my heart, mind, and behavior. That's a truly repentant person. Paul finally writes this Corinthian church. Now you got to understand he birthed this church and he loves this church deeply and he says, don't you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God. Don't fool yourselves. You know, can I say something? It's one thing to fool the person sitting next to you. It's another thing to fool yourself. That's really scary. He said those who indulge in sexual sin. Now stop right there. I'm first on the list. Okay. I'm not throwing stones here. I'm first on the list. When I was 12 years old, one of my friends introduced me to pornography. You know what happens when a man's introduced to pornography. Within months I'm addicted. By the time I'm in high school, I am so eaten up with lust. I'm undressing girls in my high school and I'm having the wildest sexual fantasies. Then I go to college. I play tennis at Purdue university. I joined a fraternity that added fuel to the fire. But my sophomore year, one of our, my fraternity brothers, who was a phenomenal athlete, came to my room and shared campus crusade for spiritual laws. I gave my life to Jesus Christ in that fraternity room. Cussing left my life just like that. Alcoholism left my life just like that. But the lust didn't. I'm still bound to pornography. When I was 23 years old, I married who I consider to be the most beautiful girl that walks the planet in my eyes. I thought everything's going to be fine. It wasn't. It got worse. It was affecting our marriage. When I was 24 years old, I went to work in full-time ministry. I'm serving in a church. It's one of the biggest churches in the United States. We had guest ministers from all over the world come. And I remember this man who had probably the most powerful deliverance ministry in the entire 20th century came to our church. And I'd gotten to know him really well because I hosted him.

His name was Dr. Lester Sumrall. And I remember I opened up with him and I said, Dr. Sumrall, I'm bound to lust. I'm bound to pornography. He rebuked me like a good father. He didn't look at me and say, oh, son, you're a red-blooded American male testosterone surgeon. Through you, you got the grace of God. Don't worry about it. He didn't say that. He said, son, you stop this. The blood of Jesus has freed you from this. And I listened to him. And when he was done, I said, would you please pray for me? I want to be free from this. He put his hand on my forehead, prayed a strong prayer. You know what happened? Nothing. Well, you better find somebody else to pray for you. No, you're not gonna find anybody stronger than Lester Sumrall. Now, that was the September of 1984. Nine months later, May of 1985, I went on a four-day fast. And on the fourth day of that fast, May 6th, 1985, I got completely set free from that spirit of lust and pornography. And I'm still free today, thank God. So I started walking in the freedom for a couple years, and I had this nagging question.

And the nagging question was this. God, I don't get it. I opened up with Dr. Sumrall. I humbled myself. Why didn't you set me free in September of 1984? Why wasn't it until May of 1985? God started showing me my prayer life. In 1982, I made a decision to set my alarm every morning at 4.45, and I would get up and be outside by 5 a.m. in a remote place, and I would pray until at least 6.30. Every day, I'd pray for an hour and a half. And my passionate, you know how you have a real passionate prayer? My passionate prayer every morning was God, use me to win souls to Jesus. Use me to lead multitudes to Jesus. Use me to heal sick people. Use me to get people free. Use me to win nations to Jesus, right? Now, I'm praying this way in the fall of 1984. It was right around that time period when I opened up with Dr. Sumrall. I'm out one morning praying this way, and the Holy Spirit speaks to me. And he said, your prayers are off target. And I went, what? I'm praying that you would use me to save people? And I'm thinking it's the devil.

And then he said, son, you can get people saved. You can get people healed. You can get people set free and end up in hell forever. Now, I really think it's the devil. But then he said this to me. He said, son, Judas left everything he had to follow me. Judas healed the sick. Judas got people free. Judas preached repentance. Judas is in hell. And I remember, you're like, I'm a Catholic boy that got saved? I don't even know what this word means, but I was trembling. And I said real cautiously, well then God, what should I really be praying? And he said to know me intimately. And I started thinking that day, that was David's number one prayer, and David finished well. That was Moses's number one prayer, and he finished well. That was Paul's number one prayer, and he finished well. I thought, I wanna finish well, okay. So I started praying, God, I wanna know you the best a man can know you. I wanna please you the best a man can please you. I wanna know your heart.

I wanna love what you love and hate what you hate. I wanna walk with you. And I started praying that passionately every day, right? You say, John, what does this have to do with you getting set free from lust and pornography? Everything. It has everything to do with it. Because look what Paul said to this Corinthian church. He said, for godly sorrow, everybody say godly sorrow, produces repentance leading to salvation. That word salvation is the Greek word soteri, which means healing, deliverance, preservation, soundness of mind. I'm talking about deliverance right now, so I'm gonna insert deliverance. So godly sorrow produces repentance leading to deliverance, right? But now look at this, not to be regretted, but sorrow of the world, everybody say sorrow of the world, produces death. So two sorrows. Both sorrows say I have sinned. They confess they've sinned. Remember, Judas said I've sinned and had remorse and threw the money back, but Judas is in hell. If you remember, King Saul said I've sinned, but yet the prophet immediately said, you've just lost your kingdom. If you remember, Balaam said I've sinned,

but yet God had him executed with the sword. So both sorrows say I've sinned. Both sorrows have remorse. Both sorrows can have tears. In fact, I've seen godly sorrow with no tears and worldly sorrow with a lot of tears. So what's the difference between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow? You can see the difference in the life of two kings. King Saul, he disobeys God. The prophet Samuel comes to him, backs him into the corner. Finally. Saul just goes, I've sinned, right? He confesses he sinned, he admits it. But then he immediately says to the prophet, yet now honor me in front of my elders and in front of the people. In other words, you have embarrassed me. So worldly sorrow focuses on you. You embarrassed me. What are the consequences of my sin? Will I be judged? Will I lose my marriage? King David commits adultery. To cover up his adultery, he murders a woman's husband. Oh my gosh, unthinkable. The prophet comes to him, the prophet Nathan. When he backs David into the corner, David falls on his face and said,

God, against you and against you only have I sinned. And he stayed on his face for seven days and couldn't care less what his elders thought and what the people thought. The focus of his sorrow is, I've hurt the heart of the one I love. Godly sorrow focuses on him. Worldly sorrow focuses on you. Will I be judged? Will I lose my marriage? God showed me. When I opened up with Dr. Sumrall, he said, son, you were concerned that this sin was gonna keep you from the worldwide preaching ministry you knew I called you to. He said the focus was you. It was worldly sorrow. He said nine months later, because you had been praying to know me intimately, your heart was breaking because you were breaking my heart. That was the godly sorrow that produced the repentance that led to your deliverance. So Paul says, don't you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God? Don't fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin or commit adultery or are male prostitutes or practice homosexuality or are thieves or greedy people or drunkards or abusive or cheat people, none of these will inherit the kingdom of God,

no matter how often they go to church. This is why Jesus comes along and Jesus says this, you can identify people by their actions, not by their intentions, not by the words, by their actions. That's how you identify people. I remember I'm dealing with this young single mother. She was having sexual relationship with a young man and she worked for an international ministry. And I remember I was confronting her and I was reading scripture to her and she got a little frustrated. She said, but John, God knows my heart. And I thought, do you have to go into a tree, take a drill and bore a hole into the center of the tree, the heart of the tree, to see if it's a good tree or not? Just look at the fruit. Jesus said, you'll know them by their fruit. Do you know that Jesus never said to one of the churches in Revelations, the churches, I know your intentions. He said to all seven of them, I know your works. Because you identify people by their actions. Not everyone, now remember this is Jesus Christ speaking, not Muhammad, all right? Not everyone who calls out to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven. So when Jesus is saying this right there, not everybody who prays a coin sinners prayer is going to heaven. Well, then Jesus, who's going to heaven?

Only those who actually do the will of my father in heaven. You see, I tried to get free from pornography and I couldn't, I tried and I couldn't, I tried and I couldn't. And then I discovered God's grace. And I discovered that God's grace not only saves me, it not only forgives me, but it empowers me to do what I couldn't do in my own ability. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. I couldn't get free from pornography in my own ability, but the grace of God did. You see, are we so naive and so ignorant that we have bought the lie that the grace of God is only powerful enough to get us free from the penalty of sin, but it's not powerful enough to get us free from the bondage of sin? Have we made God's grace that weak? I'm telling you, I've been bound and I'm free and free is so much better. Right? So Jesus said on judgment day,

so many will say to me, many, remember, many, many, many, many, will say to me, Lord, Lord, we proclaim the gospel in your name. We cast out demons in your name. We perform miracles in your name. And then I will declare to them I never knew. That Greek word there for knew is the Greek word genisco. It is the counterpart to yada. In other words, it's the exact same word. Let me give you an example, make it easy. My name in English is John. My name in English is John. My name in Spanish is Juan. My name in Italian is Giovanni. Got it? This is the exact same word. So he said, I never intimately knew you. Depart from me, you who practice. Look at the word practice, lawlessness. Now, I wanna make this point really clear. Jesus is not talking here about people that are bound to sin and crying out to God to get free. Jesus said, if your brother sins against you seven times in one day, and seven times he comes and repents, he said, you shall forgive him. Why? Because that's the way God forgives us, right? So we're not talking about the guy.

I'm convinced if 1983, I would have died in a tragedy, I would have went to heaven because every time I fell into that sin of pornography and lust, I cried out to God. Are you following what I'm saying? Okay, we're not talking about that person. When Jesus says, you who practice lawlessness, he's talking about the person who goes, well, you know, my wife doesn't treat me quite the way she used to, and she doesn't give me the amount of sex that I'm used to. And you know, this other girl, she's really kind to me. And you know, God understands my heart and the grace of God covers me. That's the person we're talking about. I'm sorry. Paul finally writes to the Corinthian church at the very end of this letter. Now remember, these are the people that he loves. It's the church he birthed. And he said, stop sinning. For to your shame, I say that some of you don't know God at all. you don't intimately know him. He's writing to the church here, not unbelievers. I want every head bowed and every eye closed. Heavenly Father, I have preached what you've commanded me to preach. And Holy Spirit, I ask that you would draw people's hearts to Jesus. I don't think I need to say much more, but I do want to ask that if you're in here this morning and you know that you haven't given your life completely and totally to Jesus, I want to give you that opportunity right now. Don't fool yourself any longer. You know, if you could see the face of Jesus, the posture of Jesus, I can almost see him, and I believe I'm seeing this in my spirit correctly, I see him leaning on his throne room seat in excitement, anticipating your response to his call. He's not angry, he's not disgusted. He's running after you, just like the prodigal son's father went running. You have to remember, he gave his life for you,

even before you knew of him. That's how much he cares for you. So if you're in this place this morning and you'd say, John, truth be told, I've got some old boyfriends, old sins in my life that I've let linger and I've excused them with an unrealistic belief in the grace of God. And I want to repent of those sins this morning. I want to give my heart completely and totally to him. I don't want to be an Angela anymore. If that's you, I want you to be bold. I want you to raise your hand up high right now. If they say, John, that's me, that's me. Raise them up high. No bride has ever been ashamed of her husband, so put your hands up high. Let me tell you something, right now, he's not just leaning forward, he's smiling. If your hand is raised, I want you to stand to your feet. Jesus said, if you'll confess me before men, I'll confess you before my father. Just stand to your seat right now, just stand up. If your arm's in the air, stand up immediately. I want to pray with you this morning. There's more, I want to give you just another moment. I don't want anybody missing out this morning. I want, if you say, you know, John, just make the decision. I want to give my heart completely and totally to him today. Then I just want you to stand up. More people are still standing.

That's why I'm kind of delaying the prayer right here. Yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am, yes, sir, yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am. There's so many more people that have just stood up. Yes, sir, yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am, thank you so much. Anyone else, please don't miss out. God's not gonna force you, I'm not gonna force you, but I just want to give you the opportunity to make that decision. If that's you and you're standing, I want us to all pray together. Even those of you that are seated, can we pray together right now? For those that are standing, this is such a great day. I mean, Jesus is jumping up and down. There are people online right now at home. Let me tell you something, Jesus is jumping up and down. Heaven is having a party because of you. Pray this with me. Say this with me, God in heaven. Say it online, if you're online, say it out loud. God in heaven, forgive me for living life my way, apart from you, my creator. But this day, I give my spirit, soul, and body, everything I am, everything I have to you, Jesus. Jesus, you are now the Lord of my life. Everything I have is yours, and I repent of sin, and my heart is completely yours. No matter what you say in your word, I will obey it by your grace, in Jesus' mighty name, amen.
