Come on, you know what I'm talking about. It may have been a sickness that should have taken you out, but Jesus, the healer, stepped in and healed you.

It may have been a sinful lifestyle that should have crushed you, but Jesus, the God of grace, stepped in and gave you a fresh start. It may have been anxiety just welling up in your mind, whether how you're gonna pay the bills, how you're gonna raise those kids, whatever life brings you, but Jesus, the Prince of Peace, stepped in and He stilled those anxious waters. Friends, this God, this very same God is here right now, ready to meet with you, ready to show you His goodness and His love. So if you have a need in your life today, I just wanna pause and pray for you. It can be big or small. I want you to experience this peace and this love from our Savior, Jesus Christ. Would you let me know who you are? Just raise your hand. It's okay, you're in a room full of family. We wanna come around you and support you, pray for you. Thanks for raising your hands. Thank you for being bold. Church, you know how we do this? Let's stretch our hands out towards our brothers and our sisters and let's go to God and let's pray. There is no one, only you, Jesus, because you are the only one that was willing to lay your life down,

to the point of death, even death on a cross. But as the scriptures say, thank God that you were not left for dead, but you were raised again to new life. And in so doing, extending that same life, that same peace, that same hope to every person in this room. So Jesus, we just humbly say, we receive what you have on offer for us. Whether it's healing that we need in our bodies or our minds, whether it's a next step, direction in our life, whether it's just overwhelming peace, because the world around us is telling us to be anxious, but you are Lord. Thank you for giving us your life, Jesus. We receive it. We love you. We give you praise because you are worthy. There is no one, only you, Jesus. And it's in your beautiful name, I pray. And everybody say, come on, if you believe your God is faithful today. He is good. Praise God. Let's keep singing together. As it has been and forever will be, the Lamb on the throne, crowns are thrown at His feet. Oh, we'll join with the heavens. One generation and on to the next.

Hey, we're continuing on in this teaching series, Five Relationship Rules, and the rule today is this. Keep your word.

Keep your word. Be a truth teller. Now, when I think about it, this is something I haven't always done so well in my life, especially if I go back to when I was a kid. Hello. If I go back to when I was a kid, I think, man, elementary school, for instance. I remember one time I went to the nurse's office in elementary school. I wasn't sick, but I was faking like I was sick, right, because I wanted to go home early. Anybody ever done this? It's okay, you can admit, you can admit. Your pastor's about to admit. Anyway, I go in. I'm like, so the nurse, she takes my temperature. She puts the thermometer in my mouth, and I'm old, so it's one of those old school thermometers, like the mercury, kind of the metal tip and stuff, and the big hack of the old school thermometers was you could take them and rub them on your pants real fast, and you could spike the temperature. Come on, anybody remember this? Some of you did this back in the day? All right, so she gives me, she's taking my temperature. She leaves the room, and I'm like, that's my opening. God is hearing my prayers. I pull that thing out of my mouth, and I rub it on my pants really fast,

and I check it, and it's not enough, so I rub it some more, and then like I overshot. Things like maxing out, and I'm like, oh no, I gotta cool it down, cool it down, cool it down, cool it down, and before I could get it cooled down, the doorknob starts to turn, so I stick it in my mouth real fast, she comes in, she takes it out of my mouth, and she literally says to me, she says, if your temperature was this high, you would need to go to the hospital, and so she knew immediately I was lying, and I was caught. Wasn't the last time, though. I remember once I tried to forge a doctor's note so that I could get out of school, and I worked it all up, you know, and I turned it in, and man, I thought I was good, and I was so offended that the school called my mom. How dare they? Crazy. We used to get report cards by mail back then, y'all. By mail, can you even imagine? And so the good news of that was if you timed it right and you watched the mailbox, you could intercept your report card before your parents saw your report card, and so that was my mode of operation for too long, right, watching the mailbox, trying to get there first, because my grades weren't good, but I didn't want to be locked in my room doing homework, I didn't want my parents nagging on me all the time, right,

and so if I could intercept that report card, I'd tear that thing up and goodbye. Of course, eventually they'd find it, and it wasn't good. You know, I think about it like when I was a teenager, I kind of started going down the road of addiction. Here's the thing about addiction, like addicts, those of us who are addicts, we're very good at lying and deceiving people. Most of all, ourselves, we become pros at deception, and when I think about my growing up years and my teenage years, my addiction years, particularly, there were a lot of lies, so many lies that at one point, I could no longer distinguish between what was true and what was a lie, and that's a scary place to be, because the Bible talks about something called a seared conscience. Your conscience can be seared to such a level that you can no longer distinguish what's true, what's not true, and you can sometimes no longer even distinguish how to get back from that craziness in your life, and we're gonna talk about that in a little bit, because it's a dangerous place to be, but I lived there in my life for a while. It was exhausting, and I think that's why when I became a follower of Jesus, my senior year of high school, and I finally got clean and sober, one of my highest values coming out of that was truth.

I realized there was no hope for me and no healing for me until I got brutally honest with myself, with God, and with the people around me, right? That's the only path to real healing. I had to get honest. I had to be truthful, and after going through that experience, truth sort of became the way in my life that I would look back and differentiate. This was my life before I became a follower of Jesus, a live-like. crazy, I didn't have any bearing on truth. This is my life after I became a follower of Jesus. Truth matters and being honest matters. And I still carry that value today. In fact, I did some leadership testing this year and the testing showed that one of my highest values was being a truth teller. In fact, the person who did this testing on me, they said, Judd, you would be a horrible spy. Because even if you had all the right motivations, right, you'd be a terrible spy. And one of the downsides, by the way, if you're a truth kind of person, is that you often assume everybody else is telling you the truth because you're trying to make an effort to tell them the truth. And then you get burned, right, again and again. So my leadership mantra this past season from my leadership coach has been trust, but verify. Trust, but verify.

But I still struggle with the truth, although now it's more about simple things and small things like exaggerating certain stories on the platform in such a way that I look better than I actually was. Come on, somebody. But in case you're ever wondering, the good news is I have this wonderful woman in my life named Lori who has been beside me for almost 30 years now, I guess 30 years. And she'll always tell me on the way home, you know, I don't think it happened quite the way you shared that it happened. You really made yourself look good there. You weren't actually doing the dishes. I was doing those dishes. You weren't actually taking care of the kids in that moment. I was taking care of the kids in that. So it gets edited and cleaned up by the next service. But anyway, there you go. The truth is like we live in a world that plays fast and loose with the truth. None of us like to be lied to, but there is temptation to lie all around us, right? There's temptation to lie to make ourselves look good, to protect ourselves, to protect our family or our kids. Could be temptation to lie to position ourselves to do better, to climb to a certain level of success. We could be tempted to lie on social media to get more attention or to get more followers

or to get more likes in our lives. I mean, we live in a culture where it's just hard to even figure out the truth and who's telling the truth about pretty much anything. Gaslighting now is like a household word, right? Anybody ever been gaslit? We gaslit is when somebody like lives in such a way that it doesn't line up with like the reality you're experiencing and you confront them about it and they basically deny it. Even when you put the facts in front of them, they deny all the facts and they make you think you're crazy. You're the one that's crazy. We're even trying to sort this out, right? Like, and so we carry wounds, we carry hurt. We carry a lot of things related to truth in our lives. And I think trust in other people in general to be truth tellers is at an all time low. I saw this one stat, thought it was interesting. I'll bring it up here on the side screens. This is like a, what we might call a generational trust chart. And this was all based on some research where they asked people the question, generally speaking, would you say that most people can be trusted or that you can't be too careful in dealing with people? And this is how the different generations answered this question. The silent generation, in other words,

those ages around 81 and up right now, of that generation, 51% said you can't be too careful about other people, right? But then as you go on, the boomers, those that are like 62 to 80, can you believe the boomers are like 62 to 80? Anyway, just throwing it out there. I'm not a boomer, so I can do this. 62% say, hey, you can't be too careful. Gen X, that's kind of my category. These are the like 45 to 61-year-olds. 64% say, hey, you can't be too careful. Millennials coming along, ages 30 to 45. Millennials, 67% say, hey, you can't be too careful. But notice this, like Gen Z, these are our 14 to 29-year-olds right now. Gen Z, 74%, you can't be too careful. In other words, the percentage is incredibly low of people that think you can generally trust people. Trust in other people is at an all-time low. And here's the thing, when you look at Jesus teaching, this really wasn't new, like playing fast and loose with the truth is as old as time. It goes all the way back. And Jesus.
