Who lives? Christ. And in his name? Glory. God is good, God is faithful. And how good that we are here, those who look at us on the internet. What a pleasure, and those who also, in one way or another, during the week from jail, also look at us, we want to recognize. And those who are on vacation, because it is summer, return home. You have to say it too, right? But how good it is to be here. I would like to tell you that today is my fourth sermon of the day. So let's give what God has put in the heart, as best as possible, with the same energy that I hope I had at 8 in the morning. The nice thing is that two or three people during the week, while I was watching them, I told them, well, this Sunday I preach in all English services, and obviously in Spanish, for them to pray for me. And I did not imagine that what I told them, some of those I mentioned at the moment, when the service is going to start at 8 in the morning, they arrive and enter here from the service in Spanish and sit in the second row. There on the second floor, an English service, I said, what are you doing here? What is this? And they tell me, we come to pray for you, for you. I say, how nice, thank you. Next time let me know to provide translation or whatever. But it was nice, that gesture and grateful for the congregation, grateful because we really are a family, the family of faith. How many say amen to that? Good, they are asleep. It's two o'clock in the afternoon, who ate, wake up. You have to wake up. I would like you to close your eyes for a moment. What God is going to speak to the heart today can be a little heavy, and I want God to create the balsam in the heart, preparing the heart that each of us has. Lord, at this time, Holy Spirit, I ask that your word reaches the deepest part of our being and that that word has fruits in our day today, Lord, and always. Eternal fruit. God, you know each one of our hearts, our needs, and today we do not go over the top, Lord, we depend fully on you. Guide us this afternoon, I say, you touching each heart in the mighty name of Jesus.
And the church says, Amen. Today we continue in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, and we are working this through a series, and we have gone passage by passage, verse by verse, without really losing or skipping any of them, because we believe that God wants to speak to us, sometimes with complete books, where we can study it together. And today we are in verse 13 to 18, that if you can look for it in your Bible, or in your cell phone, mark it, have it available, we will also have it on the screen. And honestly, I believe that this passage can be the most personal question of the whole letter. These are people who are there, in the church, planted approximately 2,000 years ago, and believe me, they need this word, and for me today, it is probably important for 121 as well. If you look at the screen, you will notice that perhaps, I hope, there is a photo. That photo represents people that I have loved, and people that I have also lost. I know that you also have a version of that screen, of what you see there. There is my grandmother, there are my grandmothers, there is my father-in-law, a great friend of the family, aunt, uncle, grandfather. And perhaps, photos that are seen around represent people that I do not even mention, because if not, the list becomes longer. Also, obviously, I have cousins, cousins, families that are still here, here on earth. A face, a voice, a funeral, a chair that was left empty, a phone number that is probably still recorded on your cell phone. Probably some of you still have a voicemail, a recorded message, and I have several of my father-in-law's that two weeks before, My wife's birthday, before she died, he sang her birthday and that stays through the years and I want to be honest with each one of you before opening the Bible, I have been close to death for a large part of my life I worked in a funeral home when I was young I said, yes, yes
I worked at the university and I said, well, I need it and there was a connection and I worked in that funeral home for two years, as a funeral director, basically I've been a hospital chaplain I've also been a military chaplain and after all these years I learned something Death never becomes normal Never! Are you with me? It never becomes normal but questions do become predictable when a moment like that comes or the people you have a conversation with eventually the most profound question usually in the dark and it's this, what happened to them? Are they okay? Are they going to be okay? Where are they now? Where? Now, there's something that may surprise you and it's that 90% of the Estonians here in America say that talking to your loved ones about death is important but only 27% have actually done it and many of us have been carrying this question in silence and if you think that Jesus is going to return the question becomes even more specific what happens if they died before Jesus returned? Did they lose him? Did they arrive too late? And maybe, as you've been in the church for a long time maybe you say, I know the answer to that I don't need to hear that part today
or maybe, for example, you went to a Christian funeral and you say, well, I heard that before it was necessary, I went through the page right? But there's a difference between knowing something in the head and needing it in the chest Are you with me? Knowing it, but bringing it to the conviction, to the heart are two different things and that's exactly the place where Paul writes today when he's sending this letter to this church the church in Thessalonica had real faith who says no? but it also had real losses Paul had preached, he got to that place he had told them that Jesus was going to return and then he left. Why did he leave? Probably he was there like once, more or less with this new-born church in a place where there was persecution there was the Greek philosophy and he says, what is this that's happening right now? the Romans trying to see and there Paul basically has to run away because if not, they lynch him they liquidate him and what happens? in that process, when he leaves no one explained to him what would happen if someone died first
it's like that first time you heard the gospel and you say, what else? explain to me more I don't know the whole framework sometimes it takes us a year to understand everything imagine a month, trying to know all the details maybe these people were very desperate not because they didn't believe but because no one had explained this part to them real panic a real problem that is being reflected in this context and Paul doesn't write to give them a prophetic timeline because sometimes you don't go in that direction the end times, the prophetic times the year such and such I know that in the year 2000 in the Y2K, do some of you remember? some didn't sleep that night I was in the Y2K group from high school the computers were supposedly going to die sometimes we add more material to what the Bible says but here Paul isn't working on that here Paul writes to heal a heart and I think that's what God wants to do this afternoon heal hearts in this place there's something important we need to know about the culture to which Paul was writing the educated and sophisticated people of that time carved, you know what that is?
they call their answers in their graves do you know what he said? over and over again, the same phrase in different places I wasn't I became I am not and I don't care That's what the tombstones said At that time in some tombstones, in many of them Let's put it this way That was their best answer Now, underground, to what they call the catacombs Have you heard this term before? Where the first Christians buried their dead Same city, same death, same reality And archaeologists say they have found More than 40,000 Christian funeral inscriptions In which the catacombs were Roman catacombs And do you know what was the most common phrase in those tombs? In peace Same death, end, completely what? Different The difference between I don't care and in peace Is what Pablo is about to explain in this passage When we finish today, I hope We will understand exactly why I'm going to talk about three points here The first point is this, the Gospel does not eliminate your pain Change where your pain ends Change where our pain ends
Look at what verse 13 says We don't want brothers to ignore about what they sleep So you don't get sad like the others who don't have hope So don't ignore about what they sleep Fear grows where the truth is absent So Pablo doesn't start with consolation, he starts with clarity We have to understand exactly the foundation of everything we are doing here He says, but I don't want you to ignore Pablo uses this phrase several times in his letters And each time with a very similar meaning What I'm going to say now is too important to misunderstand He is basically saying to the Thessalonians And I think to us too Because this is not optional, this is for the people Who are here in this place, not for the advanced people Those who say in other philosophies, no This is surgery directly Now look at what Pablo says He says, don't get sad He says, don't get sad like the others who don't have what? Hope The question is not, do you cry? The question is, where does your tears end? Where does our tears end? And then look at the word he uses for those who died Those who sleep He doesn't just say those who died, he says those who sleep The word he uses here in Greek is Koimaomai Which appears several times in the New Testament
To talk about believers who have already died From there comes the word Koimeterion Have you heard that before? We are learning new things I also learned those new words The word cemetery Places to sleep means The first Christians named their burial places from hope Places to sleep, sleep implies waking up And not everyone wakes up in the same way When Pablo says sleep, he is not saying that the dead are unconscious He is talking about the body, not the soul Look at what he says, the soul of the believer is already in what? In Christ 2 Corinthians 5.8 says Absent of the body, present to the Lord Present to the Lord The person who died in Christ Is more alive right now than you and me That we are sitting here in this place The body sleeps It waits for the resurrection But the person is with him And I have been in enough hospital rooms To tell you that this truth completely changes the way you stand in that room Remember the words in the Roman tomb I was not Ya llegue, ya no soy. No me importa.
Dice, no hemos terminado todavía.
This is not a positive thought, we are going to be positivists today This is the word of the Lord It is real, it is conviction, it is part of what we embrace and at least it gives us hope to keep walking And in that room, on that floor, at that moment, it was enough I don't know who you lost But I think some arrived today carrying someone Or maybe they have done it for a while and maybe no one has told anyone But you know who he is This text was made for you This text was made for me This morning while I was sharing, you don't know what to expect, you just let the Holy Spirit do what He wants When I stand at the door to greet people, you don't know how many people stood up to tell me these words It was very strange because you don't know what people are going through at the moment Someone told me, two days ago I lost my sister She was forty something years old and I was like, ok, ok, how? And I didn't come two months ago because I had been in the same hospital where you worked for two months With a problem in her heart And we prayed and everything, but two months ago I didn't even touch this church Even though I came here because I had a deep pain in my heart And you know what, I even told God, why, why? He said, Lord, I hate you And with tears in her eyes She said, I don't know, this morning I didn't even want to get up, comb my hair, or come here Two months without coming But it was necessary to enter this place today and precisely listen to this word Likewise, another one told me, two days ago I lost my father A month ago I lost my daughter And you say, Lord, this happens more than you can imagine
There are times when you just shut up The reality of a life in which we all know that sooner or later We will say goodbye to someone in our life Goodbye, I wouldn't say goodbye, I don't like that word It's a goodbye, when there is someone who leaves in Christ It's a what? Goodbye But the Gospel doesn't eliminate your pain It changes where your pain ends Pain is not the absence of faith I think you take this It's the evidence of the love you have lived Pain is still real But it is no longer the end Point number two Our hope rests in an empty tomb Not in positive thinking And what is that? Look at what verse 14 and 15 say Follow me, I want you to follow me Because if we believe that Jesus died and resurrected In the same way, God will bring with Jesus those who slept in Jesus Therefore, we tell you this by the word of the Lord That those of us who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord We will not give to those who slept There are moments where presence alone is not enough One as a chaplain of a hospital One trains for a while To attend what they call the Ministry of Presence It's nice, you arrive at a place, there are no words to say I was in the Children's Hospital here in Dallas for a year
In ICU, the emergency area Where the helicopter arrives, you receive a page You receive this information You arrive at the beeper of those we used years ago That are still used in hospitals You arrive in the front row, you are attending There are no words in all this process And you say, there I have a Ministry of Presence There is mom and dad, they are working with their son So that he has life, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't And although we understand that it is important You know that there are moments where one needs something solid A foundation, something that sustains when everything else falls And Paul gives us that here He doesn't say, feel better He says, here is your foundation Your foundation No dice si deseas, si imaginas, dice si creemos El cristiano, el cristianismo, seguir a Jesús no comienza con probablemente hay algo después de la muerte Hay quizás algo, no, no nada de eso, el cristianismo comienza con esto Alguien ya pasó por la muerte y regresó física, histórica y realmente Regresó, vino, la resurrección no es una pregunta O no es la pregunta, es el fundamento de lo que nosotros somos como iglesia Y no se celebra nada más el día de resurrección, ese domingo donde todos celebramos la resurrección Yo creo que es todos los días de nuestra vida porque eso nos mantiene firme en que somos seres eternos En que lo que vivimos aquí en la tierra no es el final es algo pasajero Que el caminar aquí me mantiene enfocado y claro lo puedo decir porque he visto tanto esto tan cerca de mi vida Que me ha dado perspectiva y entiendo que cuando a alguien le toca por primera vez es muy chocante Aunque nunca es normal pero si te digo mira cada pérdida que uno tiene aquí en la tierra Te da perspectiva a que somos seres que eternos, nos hace reflexionar
Here since I arrived in 2017, what took me is this For me, living is Christ and dying is gain Look at what Paul says He continues, because I would say, stop there, no But he continues, he says Having a desire to leave and be with Christ Which is much better When I read that, my heart confronts me Because all of us say, one day I will be in heaven, hallelujah But most people are afraid of death There are times when you tell someone to console someone Oh, you are in a better place How nice that sounds, but really You say, I want to be in that place Really, I with conviction Because in general, we run away and fight in this life So we don't get to that point But the reality here, Paul teaches me something else Being with Christ, which is much, what? Much, what? Much, what? I can finish with that today That sums it all up, much better to be with Christ For Him, dying in Christ is not losing It is getting closer Many people believe in heaven But much less, much less know what to do with the resurrection of the body Our hope is not simply that the soul goes to heaven Our hope is that Jesus resurrected corporally And those who are in Him, will also resurrect
Someone here may be thinking How do I know that Jesus really resurrected? And that is a good question And I will go straight and simple An empty tomb that no one could explain A movement that began in the same city where Jesus was murdered Eyewitnesses that are still alive when Paul wrote what he wrote Disciples that suffered before denying what they had seen You don't have to turn off your brain We just have to use it And recognize it Verse 15 The living We all say this in the word of the Lord It is not his opinion It comes directly from Jesus The living go first They don't go first Who goes first? I want to be honest With you about something personal In October 2020 Some of you remember that year? Before we used to say before Christ, after Christ Now it is before the pandemic, after the pandemic We were in the middle of this great pandemic Everything was upside down As they say in my country Marisol, my wife who is here Was in a park there in Carolton
Where we used to live and go A very normal afternoon The kids playing, the sun going down It was one of the favorite places for us Like little kids But her phone rang and it was her uncle Her uncle Sammy And he calls her and says that basically her dad was Marisol's dad He had had an accident in his house Nobody knew it He had been alone in his house for three days Before they found him Three days I received Marisol's call from her and I ran to the park But that same day I had been diagnosed with COVID And the doctor tells me, isolate yourself Everyone knows the protocol, especially at that time Protect those around you, keep your distance So I ran to my wife who had just lost her father And I couldn't hug her, I had a fever I had the common symptoms, I gave birth there What do you want to do as a husband? In the face of the deepest pain that your wife May have felt at that moment And maybe she has felt it all her life Because if...
Un ungüento of God. Like a hug from God. Like a touch from God that says, here I am. I want to open the altar if there is someone in this place or several people in this place that say, today I want to surrender in front of God this pain, this feeling. Today can be a good day in which God allows me to pray for you, hug you and tell you, we are with you. And answer the King of Kings with thank you, Lord. Because until today you have helped me and I know, Lord, that this is not the end, it is just the beginning of something great and eternal in you. God is good. God is faithful. God is real. Will there be someone in this place first who says, today I want to accept Jesus as my personal Savior? Today I want to tell the Lord, here I am as my personal Savior.
Lord, I want to hug you and accept you. Today can be the day in which I can tell the Lord, yes, I want to live for you. Maybe here, someone said here? Someone raise your hand. Oh! Let's pray for you. I know that God has been touching you. There is something special in you. Let's pray for you now. I know that maybe it is awkward, strange, more when it is the first time, but if you like, come here in front. Let's pray. Come here in front. I want to pray for you. Do you understand? Maybe help a man who is approaching. Give the Lord an applause. God is doing it. God is working in your hearts. God is working in your hearts. My brother. Good. If we can get closer here. Let's get closer. Let's pray.
There is someone here in pain. And a deep pain. A loss. One thing is to accept Jesus as your Savior. And let's pray. And if Pastor Ramon can help me to make a prayer. I think this is... I always say this. Maybe I get into trouble because each sermon can be the most important. I say, Lord, each sermon for me is like the last. Because if you come tonight, thank you for the opportunity. Or Lord, if I die today or die tomorrow, Lord, thank you for the opportunity because I simply jumped from the territory to be in your presence. But the process of God working in our hearts is real. Sandra, we love you. And while I preached this sermon, I know that at least 15 men were here when when Joseph left with the Lord. I wasn't going to say it now, but thank you for coming because we are with you.
Because the foundation of what we are talking about today, we experienced in flesh and blood in November 14, 15, 14 and 15, one night in which we were all together where Joseph began, he was praying, worshiping the Lord, and an hour later in our arms he left with the Lord. And although it was painful, if you go to your tomb today, where he is here close, it is written Philippians 1.21 there. Because for me, living is Christ and dying is gain. It comes out of the mind to the chest, to the heart. It becomes conviction. And we say, Lord, even if you don't understand everything, I still love you with all my heart. Lord, today heal hearts. Today God continues to work in those who have lost.
And today we also celebrate the victory of people who say, Lord, I am yours. I belong to you. Let us pray here and respond in worship. And the prayer team, especially those who are praying with us on Wednesdays and everything, come closer, hug, help us, minister, we are ministers and here we all join in prayer and also respond in worship. Let's answer the Lord.
