John 6 | Crossroads Daily
After feeding thousands with miraculously multiplied bread, Jesus pushes the crowd to see beyond the miracle itself. He tells them he is the Bread of Life. Someone who can provide soul satisfaction. Many wanted another sign or another meal, but Jesus kept pointing deeper. The bread was never the destination. It was meant to lead them to him.
Hey everybody, I'm Chuck. I'm Debo. I'm Alex. I'm Chris. I don't know why I look at you like that. We never do that order. I know, I know, we never do that order, so I don't know where that came from. Well, hey, today we're talking about John 6 and there's a lot. Anybody hungry? All that talk about bread, did that make anybody hungry? I mean, it's like Jesus talking about bread. I love bread. He's the bread of life and there's a lot there, but question, what do you look to to satisfy in life? That may not be good or may not be accurate, but you still kind of say, man, I do kind of look to that to satisfy. I think the first thing that comes to my mind is my phone. Like, I literally told this to somebody the other day. Like, I enjoy being satisfied or entertained. Like, I want to kind of escape my own reality sometimes. And that brings this kind of false satisfaction of like, okay, whatever problems I have going on, I'm just going to like go on my phone, look at social media, just watch, you know, like that brings this false sense of satisfaction. Yeah, I fall into that a lot. Same for me. It's become almost like a knee-jerk reaction. Like, if I feel stressed about something or because I feel like growing up, like if family stuff was stressful or relationships or school or sports, it was just like, well, how can I throw myself into a world that doesn't exist? Like some alternate reality. And then I still like, as much as the Lord has grown me today, I still feel that pull of like, oh, wait, no. Okay. So yeah, I get it. I actually thought of not just because we were joking about bread, but I actually thought about how food is one of those things where I feel like at the end of a stressful day or like when I'm struggling in the afternoon, I'm like, I just need a little treat right now. Like what's your go to? I don't know if it's like at night and I'm like, oh, I've had a rough day. I could really just like use some ice cream, which is crazy because I'm dairy free right now. And so it is a problem. But don't, don't you worry. I found the dairy free ice cream and the good ones. There are good ones out there. I found them. So yeah, but or even just like me. And so maybe it's actually a sugar thing where it's like you feel like that's going to like satisfy or like make you feel better. Like because I totally have a sweet tooth because in the afternoon it's like I could really use like a latte. I don't know something, but some sort of like thing where it's like, yeah, I know this will boost my mood right now. I know this will satisfy me. I, same. And for me, I was like, yeah, bread. Like I was thinking about food the whole time. Maybe actually bread. Like bread. Some sourdough. Exactly. You know, like I just, but it is this thing about food and kind of going there and like eating emotionally.
It's so funny, man. Like, you know, you think you solve one thing and you just create another challenge. So my wife is really concerned about my consumption of Coke Zero right now. She really is. Because I was not a soda person. Alex is also concerned about my consumption of Coke Zero. I just like I want to know how much Coke Zero you're drinking for her to be concerned. It's like, it's not like I mean, it might not be even daily, but like if it is a day when a Coke Zero is available, I might go for three or four, you know. And it's so funny because the reason that I'm in the Coke Zero is because I've been trying to eat keto. So I've been trying to get off a sugar, but I still need something that tastes sweet. This is how bad it is, y'all. This is the truth. I found a hack. You talked about dairy-free ice cream. I'm eating diabetic candy. I'm eating sugar-free Reese's cups are okay. I'm just saying they're not Reese's, but they're okay. That's so funny. Chuck, that's crazy. You found a thing. No, that's real. I'm straight eating diabetic candy because I'm like, all right, it doesn't have sugar in it. It's like that carbs, no sugar. I just need that sweet. Like, man, what is that about us? I heard somebody say we tend to go for relief when what we really need is restoration. And I think Jesus is getting at that with this whole bread of life. I mean, literally, he's talking to people for whom they had a sustenance existence, right? So they were like, we need bread. And here he is multiplying loaves of bread.
No wonder they're making their way to the other side of the lake to get more literal bread. Like that was life for them. What do you think Jesus is getting at when he says, don't settle for just that bread. I have something that satisfies even more than that. I'm the bread of life. What's he saying? Not even just to them, but what's he saying to us? Yeah. In my diabetic candy and Coke Zero situation. What is Jesus saying to me? He's saying, stop eating diabetic candy. No, I mean, I think it's what you were talking about. And as soon as we. take out something if there's, there's like this constant, it feels like a craving for us to feel something that Jesus promises he's, he's going to be the only thing that will satisfy. So there's never going to be that moment that we have when we're like taking out something worldly that we would have with, with Jesus. Like I'm never going to be able to not get like enough time with him. Like he will always leave me feeling satisfied because spending time with him is what I truly need. And I don't think that's, I don't think that's probably true of anything else in this world. Yeah. Yeah. So talk about like, what's a recent experience you've had where Jesus really did satisfy you? Like he kept his promise, his bread of life promise. Or where are you experiencing that in your life? I mean, I've shared a little bit about my story here and there. I think the overarching feeling that I, I feel when it comes to satisfaction from God is that, um, is in a part of my life where it feels like I'm lacking, which is I grew up, you know, my father was not a good man. He wasn't active in my life. He did not portray a good father. And throughout my life, I think this constant satisfaction that I feel from God is that, is that father, the father feeling that I have from him is like, he's my ultimate father. And I don't have to look for that in things. Like I don't have to look for my identity in other places or look for that need of what I would want from a father from other things. Like he has provided and satisfied that area of my life, like from the beginning. Um, and so that's just been like literally
over my whole life. And there's other things as well, like here and there, but that's been the, the biggest, like eyeopening thing of like satisfaction for me is like, I feel satisfied in that part of my life because of, of the role that he is as my father. That's, that's deep. I mean, speaking of food, I, so much of my life, it's like, if I'm out late anywhere, Taco Bell or Wendy's is getting hit up for me in some way, shape or form. And that's like, it took a while, but I feel like the Lord was kind of pressing on me like, Hey, is this, do you want to just have to have this compulsion every single time it's like past 9 PM and you're driving that you have to go do this thing. And, uh, I felt like I was introduced to the concept of fasting, which I was like, no way. Like this is the, it was a nightmare to me. Like someone I I live to eat and I'm like, I don't, the idea of giving that up in any form was sounded horrible. And I would try it out and be like, all right, I'm going to fast for two days straight. And then I would just wake up and get to like 11. I'm like, this man was not meant to live. Man was meant to live on bread alone. Like we need this. And so, but over time, like I, I just saw like, okay, it's like, let's make it to the lunchtime today. Let's make it to dinner. And then it's become a regular routine now. And it's like each time, just this, I realize how much my body just craves Jesus plus anything. That's like, I just want to add on to GS so many things. And every time I fast, it just, it never gets easier, but it's just always a reminder of like, I don't need anything about him. That's so good. That is really good. I feel like when I think about Jesus providing for me recently, it's been in the idea of rest in busyness. And I feel like I've talked about this with some of you guys here before of rest feels hard right now because I have two really young kids at home. And oftentimes what ends up happening is because I want to sleep in or because I like feel like I need physical rest. I cheat out on time with Jesus. And what's really amazing is I feel like when I'm intentionally trying to spend time with him, he provides what feels like actual like extra hours in the day or provides patience for me or provides really like what, whatever it is, I feel like, ah, I need like peace or whatever it is. I feel like I get that from time with Jesus in that rest, but also in things feeling really, really busy. That's been really sweet in this season. It's good. It's awesome. Yeah. When I think about, you know, so much of this, I'm never, and this is true, we're doing a series on I am statements of Jesus. And Craig Dockery, who's part of our team said this, he said, every one of these is both an invitation and a challenge.
And the challenge in this one, I think it's a challenge with a lot of these I am statements is will I trust Jesus to be the satisfaction that I need? Will I wait for him or will I reach for the easy relief thing? And when we choose to wait, he always satisfies. He really does. Like, one of the places that I've been experiencing this is just in friendships. And realizing, like, there is a part of me that is so nurtured by just dudes that know me and walk with me and laugh with me and challenge me. Like, there's just such deep satisfaction with that. Like, it is enough. And maybe today, that might be an interesting thing to just think about a place in your life where you feel that desire to crave something. And just make your prayer, Jesus, you are enough. When it comes to my food, you are enough. When it comes to my rest, you are enough. When it comes to my identity, you are enough. That might be a great way to step into really receiving what Jesus says about himself, which is that he really is the bread of life, the bread that deeply satisfies. ♪ Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh ♪
