Jesus - Real Men of Christmas: Wk 4

Amen, amen, and amen. Merry Christmas, church. I hope you are doing great. If you have your Bibles, take them. We will be in John, chapter 1. I welcome you to the good night. Those in the back can sit on the steps. No problem. I think the inspector is here. If not, you too. As we entered, packages and tables of compassion passed. Last weekend we had an event of compassion for years and years. Since we started, we have been associated with Compassion International to get children out of poverty in the name of Jesus. Because of Christmas, not because of some weird Hallmark magic. There is no such thing. But thanks to the Christmas miracle, which is the birth of the Messiah. May the God of the universe come to rescue us and renew everything between us to restore harmony with him. He brings peace to the earth and goodwill to all. But you will never experience God's peace until you make peace with God.

I know we have all kinds of people here because it is Christmas Eve, and if you are not regular, if you don't come to church normally, but you are from Christmas Eve, let me warn you, I did not grow up in the church. We only went to Christmas Eve and Easter, and look at me now, so I could infect you. Just be careful. We are very happy to have you here, and I don't want to call you a guest, because we love guests. Gretchen and I enjoy having guests at home. But we have an understanding that you will leave, that you will return home, that you will not join our family. That is why it is not what I want for you. Join this family. Make this place your home. We are very excited that you are here. And maybe you will ask yourself, if you are not completely convinced with Jesus, something must resonate in you. You are on Christmas Eve. Maybe your grandmother brought you. I don't know the reason, but I'm glad you're here. Maybe you say, okay, I'm in favor of Christmas. Who is not? But are you serious? A virgin birth? Do you want to tell me that you believe that a virgin who was married gave birth to a child? And my answer is, yes, I believe it. And I believe it because the Bible says it. And here in 1122, we are people who love Jesus and believe in the Bible. This is our authority. If you doubt the virgin birth, remember that it is believed by all. Think about it.

You have one or two options. Or a virgin gave birth to a baby orchestrated by an all-powerful Creator because He loves you and has a purpose for your life. Or you believe in the virginal birth of a universe that out of nowhere gave rise to something that became consciousness. And although you cannot deny that you love the family with which you are sitting, in reality you are miscalculating the circumstances. And there is only some chemistry in your mind. And everything is useless. So, which one do you believe in? Now, for the first time, I will quote Joe Rogan with this. And he says, I think I will choose Jesus. That makes a lot more sense. Amen? We are in the fourth week of the true men of Christmas. We speak of some men who played an important role in Christmas. We speak of Joseph and how he lived in anonymity. We speak of the shepherds. They were a kind of nobody who acted according to their faith. We speak of the wise kings last weekend and how you find what you are looking for. They looked for the Messiah and found Him. And today, on Christmas Eve, we are going to speak of the true man of Christmas. And his name is Jesus. And He was really a man. And He is really God. Jesus Christ is totally God and totally man. The gifted can name Him as the hypostatic union. Jesus had two natures. Completely God and completely man, not mixed like the yin and the yang.

It is not like a swing that leans towards God or towards man, but it was completely God and completely man. And the way this is made possible, we see it at Christmas, because his mother's name was Maria, and he was born as a human male, a small baby, and grew up to be a man. And the Bible says that he was tempted in all that we have been tempted. The Bible says in the book of Hebrews that we do not have a high priest who is not understanding with us, and who has not gone through the same circumstances that you and I have gone through. That he was totally man, and he was born, and that man can die. And he was totally God. Since his father was not Joseph, but his father is God the Father. This means that Jesus does not come from the seed of Adam, and does not inherit a sinful nature, but was born without sin, and was born perfect. Despite being tempted in everything, being God and man, he always chose the will of God over that of the world. That he was all-powerful and had the ability and the aptitude to defeat death. Now when I think about who God is, if I am honest, I understand that God is superior and omnipotent, with more power than us. That seems logical to me. If the God of the universe created everything with his word, of course he is great and powerful. And there may be moments in your life where you have felt how insignificant you really are. Have you ever done this? Have you ever gone, for example, to the Great Canyon? No one feels great on the edge of the canyon. You feel very small, don't you? Have you experienced the force of the waves tripling their height on the beach during a hurricane? Do not risk it.

Have you been next to the Tetons? No one boasts of being able to lift 200 pounds. How affectionate, love. Whatever your thing, you know you are very small, and God is very great, all-powerful, omniscient, omnipresent, great. One of the things that is difficult to assimilate for us, and in which Christmas assists us, is how God became small. How the sovereign king of the universe, who spoke to create everything, became very, very, very personal and close. This is Christmas. We call it Incarnation. Carné means meat. Like if you go to a Mexican restaurant and order something with meat. That means with meat. Christmas is God with meat. Did you know that? It is the Incarnation. That God became one of us. John, chapter 1, verse 1, will explain not only the magnificence of God, the glory of God, but also the person of God, Jesus Christ. John 1, 1. Now, if you were a Jew of the first century, which no one here is, but if you were, the moment you read the first three words here, you would know, wow, this sounds like the first three words of the whole Bible, because they are the same. It starts like this, at the beginning. It refers to Genesis 1. It says, in the beginning was the Word. And if you look, that word, Word, is in capital letters.

It says, in the beginning was the Word. Because in Genesis 1, God is speaking to create all things. This is what John is referring to. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word is here again. So, what John will do is take a Hebrew idea about God, creating all things, in Genesis 1, and he will take a Greek idea known as the Logos. That is the Greek word for Word. And it doesn't just mean a word that comes out of your mouth. This idea of Logos, or Logos, was that there was this cosmic, animating force behind everything that was alive. And John says, you know what? The Greeks are right. There is a cosmic force that animates all living things, and I know Him by His name. And in the beginning was the Word. And the Word was God, and the Word was with God. To what you say, wait, what? So, which of the two? Was it with God, or was it God? And John says, correct, it's both. In fact, I will add to the Holy Spirit, God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit, a God in three persons. This Word, God the Son, is coeternal with God the Father. And verse 2, He was in the beginning with God. Verse 3, all things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing that exists was made. This is a great and powerful God who spoke to create all things. Verse 4, in Him was life.

Life was the light of men, and light shines in darkness, and darkness has not overcome it. And there seems to be a little deviation here. In verse 6 of the Bible, it is mentioned that John was a man sent by God, differentiating between man and God. The Apostle John wrote this to him. This is the one we know as John the Baptist. If you are new, he was not a Baptist. It is not that there was a Methodist Mark, Peter the Presbyterian, Cathy the Catholic, and John the Baptist. It was not like that. He baptized the people in the Jordan and gave testimony about the one who was the Word, the Light of Life. Verse 7. And he came as a witness to testify about the Light. So that all would believe through him. He was not the Light, but a witness to the Light. Thirty years after the birth of Jesus, Jesus appears. John the Baptist is baptizing in the Jordan. And he says, Very well, everyone stop. I have an announcement to make. And he points to his cousin Jesus of Nazareth, the son of the carpenter. And he says, Here I am, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the whole world.

That is what he was giving testimony about. Here I am, the Lamb of God, who has come to take away the sin of the whole world. That was his testimony. It will make much more sense in a couple of minutes. Verse 9. And the true Light that illuminates all came to the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world did not recognize him. He came to his own people, and his people did not receive him. Verse 12. But all who received him. I will repeat this, but I need you to know. If you fall into the category of all, you can receive him. It does not matter your identity or past decisions. Go ahead and give the best of yourself. This does not prevent you from receiving the unworthy and free grace that Jesus Christ offers us, but those who received him, those who believed in his name, he gave them the power to be made children of God. I want you to see how personal he is. He is the one who calls the stars to exist. He also wants you to know him as a father, and that he knows you as a son. It is very personal. Born not of blood, nor of human will, but of God. Verse 14 is well known.

Verse 15. Most of the time, the condescending word is not good. If I speak to you condescendingly, I am treating you with superiority. When God became condescending, he became humble. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Bible says so in Philippians chapter 2, verse 4. Paul says, Let everyone look not only at their own, but also at that of others. Keep among yourselves the same attitude that Christ Jesus had, who, being God, renounced his divinity and became man, but emptied himself. As you can see, Jesus emptied himself. You and I are full of ourselves. I have seen your Instagram account. Everything revolves around you. Do you know what is one of the marks that our generation, if we group everyone into one generation, do you know what is one of the marks that we have left in society? Do you know what we invented? Selfies. Before there were no selfies. Now there are. Why? Because we are in ourselves. In 2025, more than 370 people died from selfie accidents. Do you know what that means? That people were so into themselves that they went to the Grand Canyon, thought it would be a good picture, and then fell and died. Darwin was not wrong in everything. Do you understand what I am saying?

We are in ourselves. While we are focused on ourselves, Jesus humbled himself, becoming a servant and taking on a human form to be like us. He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on the cross. We do not understand the seriousness of this. Part of the reason why we do not understand the seriousness is because many people have a theology like Ricky Bobby from Talladega. And you say, what is the problem with a baby in a manger? That is my favorite part of Jesus. Well, the baby did not stay in the manger. It grew. But what you do not understand is how many... He diminished himself to be born among us. One of my friends, a colleague named Josh Howerton, who is a pastor in Texas, expresses it like this. He says that at Christmas, Jesus left his dignity at the entrance. Have you ever left your dignity at the door? If you are a man older than 50, you have done it. Hey, all men over 50 or more, raise your hand. Good, raise it. They are much older than 50, right? Good, look. Have you been to the doctor lately? Yes, good, that is a pleasure, right? A whole different experience. When you are 20, this is like self-service.

They say, yes, you look good. Keep going, okay. Drink water, whatever they tell you. Good, as I am the main pastor of this church, I am 52 years old. The elders make me do all these annual physical checks for security reasons and all those things. And although I live a very, very blessed life and without complaints at all, one of the things I can't do is that I can't go anywhere around here without someone, or I know them, or they know me. And I do all that in the Mayo Clinic, which is very close to a stone's throw. It seems that our evangelism strategy in Mayo worked well, since almost everyone goes there. And when you are 52 years old and you have to undergo this type of check, guys, do you know what that means? Oh, heavens, it's a complete check situation, if you understand me. Okay? And it's terrible, it's embarrassing, it's horrible. We're talking about a colonoscopy. Kids, ask your parents what a colonoscopy is when you get home. It's what Santa gives people on the list of the bad guys, that's what it is. And the day before begins.

Oh, yes, they give you a magic liquid. Hey, why don't you drink this every 15 minutes? It'll be great. It's not great. I mean, it's something else, man. That thing will take away your sin. You know what I mean? There's nothing left. It's incredible what's going on there. And then they need to put a stop to it because I had to call. My appointment was at 8 and I said, hey, I won't be there at 8. I'll be there at 9. They said, you have to be here at 8. I mean, you'll get a bill for cleaning the upholstery of a GMC. They say, okay, we'll see when you get there. So I walked in like a penguin and I said, hey, great, I'm here. You feel terrible, right? I mean, you're dehydrated and you feel terrible. It's very humiliating. What do you do when you get in? They say, here, I want you to put on this robe. And you leave your dignity at the entrance. You take off the robe that covers you and then you put on something that looks like a half-price liquidation. You know what I mean?

What do you mean, doctor? It's a little chilly. I don't think we're covered here. Then they put you on a stretcher and they take you around that room and everyone knows what's about to happen. Oh, it's not good at all. And you're there like a penguin and the doctor has the audacity to come up to you and he says this to me, sir, could you move your butt this way? Sir, I'm an adult man, I don't have a butt. You know what I mean? We use words that I can't say in church. Can we be honest here? And indeed, it's almost that time. There's a lady standing here at the counter and she turns around and says, Pastor Joby, let's go to church together. Of course. Yes. And I'm on a stretcher because they give you drugs to help you. And I said something like, maybe there could be parts of me that I've never seen in plain sight on that TV now. I don't think it's the time to socialize, right? Do you understand what I'm saying? I'm a gift to no one that they will do a daily procedure. And so the distance between this pulpit right now

and a bed in May is infinitely smaller than the distance between the throne of glory where Jesus was sitting. And he gets up, as my good friend Charles Martin says, he takes off his crown, he leaves aside his royal diadem, he takes off his royal tunic, and he throws himself headlong in humility and he is born like a baby in a manger. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us and left its dignity at the door. And maybe you say, well, why do I care about this at Christmas? Oh, it's the most important thing you'll hear in your life. Because if Jesus doesn't come in a rescue mission for you and for me, then we would all be lost in our sins and our transgressions. And we could never experience God's peace because without Jesus coming as a rescue for you and for me, we could never have peace with God. You see, when God created all this for his glory, God, from an overflow of God's love for himself, speaks everything to existence. And the Bible says it's good. But God doesn't just do good, he does real good, very good. And then he creates bearers of his image to be in a relationship with him, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and everything is amazing.

Y cualquier cosa que te haya dolido mucho en tu vida es resultado de ese momento. Y debido a que Dios es justo, todo pecado debe ser pagado. Hacer que Dios ignore el pecado sería injusto. Y Dios es justo. Pero como Dios es clemente, Dios hizo un camino para que podamos ser reconciliados con él. Nos da una imagen de ello aquí en Génesis 3. Debido a su justicia, expulsa a Adán y Eva del jardín para juzgarlos por su pecado. Pero derrama la sangre de un animal por primera vez para hacer una vestidura que cubra su pecado y vergüenza. Al empezar a ojear la Biblia, lo que encontrarás es que Dios establece lo que llamamos un sistema sacrificial. Llama a un pueblo para hacer una luz en el mundo, construyendo un templo en medio de él para exhibir su gloria y atraer a todos los pueblos, tribus y lenguas. Todas las naciones hacia sí mismo. Pero de nuevo, ¿cómo puede un pueblo impío estar ante un Dios Santo? Y esto es lo que hace Dios. Y el sacrificio que se iba a hacer, en realidad eran miles de ellos, era que tomaban un cordero perfecto e inmaculado y derramaban la sangre de este cordero. Y luego el sumo sacerdote se consagraba, pasaba por este tipo de lavado ritual y luego entraba al templo e iba a esta habitación llamada el lugar santísimo donde estaba el arca del pacto, contenía la ley de Dios y tomaba la sangre del cordero y la rociaba sobre el arca del pacto. And what did the shepherds do while they were preparing for the day of the expiation that year? It was to look for perfect and immaculate lambs to prepare them for the sacrifice in Jerusalem. And so, when the mother sheep had the young, those who did not pass the test were discarded, but the perfect and immaculate lambs were taken. And do you know what they did? They wrapped them in clothes. Do you know why? You mothers know this. Do you remember when you had a baby in the hospital? And then, you know, they put them in that thing that keeps the potatoes hot for a while, and when they are at room temperature or whatever, they take them. And what do they do? They wrap them. Why? Because they could scratch your face with their little crazy nails. Well, this is what happened. If you found this perfect lamb without a spot, you didn't want it to get hurt, you didn't want it to bite the wool, that kind of thing, so they wrapped it and they didn't want to put it on the ground

so that it would step on it or get wet or get dirty. Therefore, they often put it in a feeding bowl called a manger. And so, the shepherds put the sacrificial lamb in a diaper in a manger. And the angel says, Here I bring you new ones of great pleasure, for today you have been born in the city of David, Christ the Savior, the Lord. And so you will know, it will be wrapped and put in a manger. Why? Because the testimony of John was correct. Look, He is the Lamb of God who has come to take away the sin of the whole world. He is not just another Lamb of God who will cover the sin of the Jews until the next year. He is the Lamb of God who has come to take away the sin of the whole world. And he didn't stay like a baby in a manger. He grew up to be a man and taught us the word of God. But that is not the main reason why he came. John didn't say,

Here I am, the Master. He didn't say that. He didn't say, Here I am, the doer of miracles. He didn't say that either. He didn't even say, Here I am, the politician. Thank God. He said, Here I am, the Lamb. This baby was born to die for you and for me to redeem the world a perfect life that we have not attained. Then he is arrested, taken to trial and dies on the cross as a sinner. He rises with his feet nailed and says, Everything is fulfilled. What is finished? The price for your sin and mine has been paid in its entirety. That is what he meant to tell us. What does it mean? You see, John the Baptist was right. He is totally man and totally God.

As he walked on the water, but he also had thirst. He could stop the flow of blood by just touching the edge of his clothes, but he also bled. That he is the bread of life, and yet he was hungry. He is the King of Kings, and yet he dressed like a servant. That one day all his tears will dry up, and yet he cried for the death of his friend Lazarus. That he is just and justifier. And the real key is this. He was without sin, and he was made a sinner. In 2 Corinthians 5, verse 21, it is said that Christ, without knowing sin, assumed it for us so that we may receive the justice of God. But I have very good news. He did not remain dead. When he rose with his feet nailed and said, Everything is fulfilled. He did not say that it was finished, because it was not yet finished. He was dead. They put him in a borrowed grave. Do you know why they put him in a borrowed grave?

Because he only needed it for the weekend, because that Sunday he rolled the stone and walked out of the tomb. And if he walks out of the tomb, like him, we can walk out of the tomb and walk in a new life with him. And he was ascended to the right hand of the Father God. And on the very first Christmas, Jesus came humble and meek. But not anymore. Do you ever think about what Jesus is doing now? Many here share the theology of Ricky Bobby in Talladega. Jesus is no longer just a baby of eight pounds and six ounces wrapped in diapers. He is sitting at the right hand of the Father God, and the Bible tells us what he is doing right now. That he governs and reigns. That one of the things that the risen Christ is doing right now is that he is interceding for you and for me. That God, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is in the right ear of his Father, interceding for you and for me right now. John, in the Gospel, says that he is preparing a place for us to follow him.
