I expected a Reward - JJ Vasquez
What's up, Jeremy J. Church? Let's go. Yes. You made it here. That's right. To the house of the Lord. Oh. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. You tell them. It's because I was worshiping earlier. Amen. Can you tell? Amen. Amen. She got her Sunday best on. Okay. All right. I did it for the Lord. Put it all for the Lord. Okay. Okay. That's right. What's up, guys? We are so excited that you're here. If I haven't gotten the privilege or the honor to meet you yet, my name is Chantel. You get the absolute joy of being one of your online hosts today. And my name is Kyla, and I also get to serve here as one of the online hosts. I'm so excited to be here. That's right.
And my name is Javon, and I am also one of your hosts being here this morning. We are so grateful that you are here 10 o'clock at this service. That's right. Come on. Yes. That's right. That's right. I'm surprised you didn't hit it with the, it's your boy. Oh, that coming later. Oh, yeah. Spoiler alert. You see, spoiler alert. It coming later. That's right. Come on. It's 10 o'clock, three o'clock. I don't know what time it is. Wherever, whatever time zone you're in, let us know in the chat because there are no time constraints on church and on being in the house of the Lord. So let us know where you're watching from, home, work, the gym. You know what I was going to say? Yeah. I was going to say, you know, it doesn't matter what time you're watching, but the Lord is always on time. Oh, yes. He is time. Come on. I'm the presence. That means I'm putting something. All right.
I love it. Are you guys getting prepared for service? We want to know where are you guys at? How are you guys getting prepared and how do you create that space to let the Lord in? That's what we want to know. Drop it in the chat because we are nosy over here. Absolutely. Yes. And also something we want to highlight. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. For our brother over here joining us. We had something pretty cool go on this past Friday. Let us know. This Friday, we actually had men's night going on. OK. And men's night was phenomenal. Fire. We had basketball court, food truck, car show, weightlifting. And then you come inside the auditorium. You had a worship and you had a message. But the message was somebody that you wouldn't expect. Michael Coe. OK. He actually played in the NFL. He got drafted to the Colts and then he went to the Giants and got a Super Bowl ring. OK. Super Bowl ring. Super Bowl ring. And at that point, he actually comes to Fern Park as his home church. That's so good.
I thought. Come on. Talk about God. Yes. Same time. His message was so phenomenal. It was just something like any man could just dream of being like what his mindset was. Wow. So thank you for sharing that. I love that. And you know what I heard is that that was the fourth one that we've had. Definitely. So even for the men online, if you're wondering how do I get involved next year might be your opportunity. That's right. Right. And ladies, don't feel left out. You know, we don't have a ladies night. OK. That's right. Coming up. Stay tuned for the details. That's right. That's right. Oh, I love it. Can't shut the men out just yet. Oh, yeah. That's why you're here. You can shut them out. So good. Don't worry, man.
We're going to get this men conference going on. We need more men to say yes. Oh, yeah. Your yes matters. So come on, man. That's right. And another thing. Man, Pastor JJ back from sabbatical has been going crazy with the sermons. Yes, he has. And just the expectations and what is going on. So, Kyla, just give me a quick little tidbit of what you've gotten from this series. I think for me, it's that expectations, if left unchecked, can be dangerous to our walk with God. And so something I've been wrestling with God in is that gap, you know, between the reality and our faith. And so one thing God has been calling me to do is surrender those expectations. So I want to encourage you guys to do the same. Absolutely. We love that. And with that being said, we are going to go to our good friend, our brother, JD. That's right. He's in the sanctuary right now. And he's going to let us know what's going on with service. See you guys soon, okay? See you. Let's go. Hey, thank you so much, online team. Chantel, Jayvon, Kyla, thank you so much for the warm handoff. Good morning. If we haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet, my name is JD. I have the honor and privilege of serving on the online team as well. If you can see behind me, the auditorium is getting filled.
The band just hit the stage. The worship team is about to jump out and begin worship. And we want you to get ready, prepare your space, prepare your heart for some time of worship. Worship is such an important piece of just honoring God and just showing God that you put him first above everything else. When you recognize God's character, his goodness, his provision, authority, faithfulness, that recognition itself produces worship. And you want to worship and honor God above all the troubles, all the trials you might be going through, whether that may be the smallest thing to the biggest thing. If it matters to you, it matters to God. And honestly, for the parent who's worried about how they're going to provide this school year for their children, for the person who just lost a friend or a loved one, no matter what you're going through, God cares about it. And he is faithful to meet you where you're at. Matthew, Matthew. Chapter 6 starting at verse 25. It talks about do not worry. Do not worry about what What you'll eat what you'll wear what what what pertains to your life? But to focus on God if God takes care of the birds in the field, he covers the grass What should you worry you matter even more than that? So right now I want to intercede. I want to step in the gap I want to pray with you so you can know that we are with you that God is for you father God we come before you right now. We thank you for your faithfulness We thank you because you always meet our needs and you care about the minor Thing the major things going on in our life and we thank you because your word promises that you reward those who diligently seek you We don't seek you for the reward. The reward is you my God and knowing you we trust in you We're gonna put you first above it all in Jesus name. We pray. Amen Get ready worship no matter where you're at whether that be home in your bedroom in your bed at home Let's get worship and prepare to pay hard space. to another church because at least you're still in God's kingdom my mission was never to make you a part of journey it was to make you a part of Jesus's body and we're just a part of the body but what does break my heart is when people leave Jesus seeing them walk away from their faith not because Jesus was bad but because your expectations weren't good and I just felt like if we could spend a couple of weeks shaping those expectations addressing the ungodly ones and giving you godly ones to hold on to I think your longevity in this and I think your joy in this would be way higher and so that's my that's my heart so hopefully throughout this month we've been knocking those out and today to introduce the expectation that I want to tackle I want to share a story about a home story a home story so something you need to know about my wife Pastor Liz aside from the fact that she is beautiful amazing funny smart anointed amazing dresser successful thrift shopper all those things you need to know that she is like particularly organized and clean which is a real problem for someone like me I blame grandma who cleaned up after me my whole life I was a grown man didn't know how to do laundry didn't know how to keep things in order so I was I was a little messy Pastor Liz has been picking up and fixing me but she's very particular she's very particular and I love her she's sweet but she will let you know when things ain't right in the house. She's not like rude. She's just vocal. She's just vocal. You're not gonna have to guess. You know what I'm saying? People like that in your life, you don't gotta guess, they gonna tell you. And so every time, if there's a dish in the sink, if the couch is not fluffed, if there's a fork left out,
if the forks ain't in the right places, if the small fork is with the big fork, if the butter knife is with the steak knife, she's just gonna let you know. So one day, she was out doing something, and I don't remember what it was, but I saw on the phone that she was coming back home, so I got all the boys together, and I was like, we're gonna blow her mind. And it's like, let's go, guys. We went into the only in-depth cleaning of that house. Every dish was cleaned. Every utensil was put away. Clap your hands. I don't know whether to be supported or offended. I don't. I don't. I don't. I don't. Everything was put in place. We went to the couches. We started fluffing the couches. We did some cleaning of the toilets. We wiped down mirrors. We wiped down mirrors, y'all, because, you know, you got the floss stuff, the sticks to the mirror. Wiped down the mirrors, and then when I saw she was about to pull into the garage, the garage leads right into the kitchen,
so I just stood at the kitchen table right when she came in from the garage. She came in, and she looked around, and she said, hey, babe. I said, hey. She said, it was great. The event I was at was great. I was like, cool. I'm so glad you had a good time. She goes, yeah. I'm gonna go take a shower. So I followed her. So I followed her, and I say, hey, so I don't know if you noticed, but this house is pretty spotless. This house is pretty clean, babe, and I don't know, I feel like I did a good job, and I gotta be honest. You know, you just walked in here, and you didn't say anything, and she was like, well, what did you want me to say? I was like, I don't know, thank you? Maybe, I was hoping maybe to get a kiss out of this. If I'm honest, maybe more. If I'm honest. But you said nothing. You just went upstairs, and you said nothing, and she was like, but why did you expect that? And I was like, well, I thought I had a great answer. I was like, well, I hear you say something
every time it's messy. So I just figured you'd keep the same energy as when you walked in and you saw everything clean. And so she was like, oh, no, I get it, but let me just get this straight. So you want me to say thank you? Okay, let me just be clear. And she said what she said. What she said. She said, so just so I can be clear, she said, so you want me to say thank you for doing what you were supposed to do? I was like. I was about to get into it, boy. I was about to go in. And the moment I was about to preach to her, Jesus started preaching to me. Luke chapter 17, verse seven. You might not have ever heard this scripture passage before, and it's gonna offend you, and that's gonna be good. Chapter 17, verse seven. Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, come along now, sit down with me and eat. Won't he rather say, prepare my supper, get yourself ready, and wait on me while I eat and drink. And after that, you may eat and drink. Will he thank the servant because he did what he was supposed to do?
So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should just say, we are unworthy servants. We have only done our duty. Here's the expectation, the unhealthy expectation we gotta tackle today. Here's the title of today's message. I expected a reward. I expected a reward. I don't know if you can recognize these or not. They are a little outdated. These are our rewards cards. Yeah, I knew I wanted rewards cards for this illustration and I could only find these four to the same place because it hit me that they don't do this anymore. They got the phones where you put in your number and you get the rewards, which is. Genius marketing, by the way, because then they got your number and you just wanted free ice cream. Speaking of ice cream, that's the place that this is to. This is to a place called Kilwins on Park Avenue, one of my wife's and our family's favorite ice cream place. If you don't know how this works, because you are of another generation, how it works is you would go to a place of business, you would make a purchase, and then you'd get a punch. A purchase and a punch, a purchase and a punch, a purchase and a punch. And here at Kilwins, if you get,
they didn't sponsor this, by the way, but at Kilwins, if you get 10 punches, on your 10th punch, you get a free ice cream. So heads up, babe, we got it. We got a free ice cream. That's how it works. And it keeps you coming back, and then you trade in. You trade in what you did for something extra. And it's a great program when it comes to ice cream. It's a great program when it comes to Starbucks. And it's a great program when it comes to McDonald's. But it's a terrible program when it comes to prayer. It's not like we have a punch card at home, but I think somewhere in our mind, after deciding to follow Jesus, and after deciding to live His way, I think a lot of us, when we get to prayer, and in God's presence, we go, okay, before I pray, just as a reminder, I came to church on Sunday. Punch. I've been faithful to my wife. Punch. I gave my tithes this month. Punch. I really wanted to punch that person in the face, but chose not to. That's gotta at least be two punches right there. Punch, punch. I mean, I'm living life a good way. Now that you got, I just wanted to say that.
So now, about that raise. God. God. I know you're not gonna answer that person's prayer. They're a sinner. But about that promotion, Lord. About that spouse, God. About that healing, Lord. And we try and trade in what we did for the Lord. And the problem with that is, we are turning obedience into a form of currency. And the kingdom of God does not operate transactionally. The foundation of the kingdom of God is not transactional. It's relational. It's not, I did this, so you did that. The reason I serve Liz is not because we got these at home, and 10 stars gets me whatever. I don't serve Liz because of the rewards. I serve Liz because of the ring. Not because of these, but because of this. When it comes to serving God, we don't serve God because of what he can do for us. We serve God because of who he is to me. Who he is to me. Not because of what he does. There's a problem with that, because if we serve God for the reward, then we don't really love God. We love the reward. There are three problems with serving God for his benefits.
Three problems of serving God for his blessings that I wanna share with you today, because I think a lot of us, when we decide to follow Jesus, get sold on his blessings. But problem number one with following Jesus just for his blessings, with following God just for his reward is, listen, problem number one, the reward becomes God. Now I'm living for the reward. Let me bring it back to my wife and I at home. If the only reason I serve my wife is to have sex with my wife, then I don't love Liz. I love sex. And if I am spending time with someone, not because I love them, but if I am spending time with someone because of what they can give me, that is not intimacy, that is prostitution. When a person spends a night with a prostitute, they are not spending the night with them because they love that person or even like that person. They are spending money so that they can get something from that person, except oftentimes in a religious sense, we are trying to spend obedience, we are trying to spend church, we're trying to spend prayer, we're trying to spend righteousness
and going, hey now, I want this from you. And we don't really love him, we love it. Whatever the it is that we're praying for. And we have a word in church for whenever it becomes more important than him. It's called idolatry. Now, what is idolatry? If you're new to church and you never heard that word before, it simply means making a lowercase g God out of an it. And the problem with having idols in our life is that idols always lead us to bad places. Always take us to bad, they influence us and they direct us to bad places. Jesus knew this. One time Jesus feeds thousands of people. He like multiplies bread and fish and feeds thousands of people. And then the people start following Jesus. And right before they start following him, Jesus looks back at them after they all gather and follow him and he says this in John 6, 26. He says, very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, but not because you saw the signs I performed, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Now, isn't the sign the loaves? Is that the same thing? It was the same event, but two types of people saw two different things
when they were at that event. One person saw the bread and then saw the bread of life behind the bread. One person saw the moment and saw the God, the provider. Another person just saw the provision. It's, we gotta be sure, listen, that in the midst of the miracle, we are not so focused on the provision that we do not recognize the provider. He is the one who feeds us, that he is the one who sustains us, that he is the one who gives us life, that he is the one who was broken for our life and our eternity and our hope and our peace. He's the one. So, we gotta be careful as the reward becomes God. Here's problem number two. Problem number two with serving God just for his blessing is that you'll see bad people get rewarded and wonder, what's the point? Why be good? You ever seen bad people get rewarded? You got dictators living in palaces and you've got social workers living in apartments. You got drug dealers driving Maseratis and you got teachers driving Mitsubishis. What's the point of being good if it seems like the bad people are the ones who are living the best life? The psalmist in Psalm 73, verses two through three,
he addresses this tension. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped. I had nearly lost my foothold, for I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. Here's what I thought about them. They have no struggles. Their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens. They are not plagued by human ills. This is what the wicked are like. They are always free of care. They go on amassing wealth. It doesn't make any sense. And here's what he says, and I'll get the message version, says the next verse. He goes, I've been stupid to play by the rules. What has it gotten me? A long run of bad luck. That's what, a slap in the face every time I walk out the door. Isn't it frustrating when you see people doing things that are not according to God's word, looking like they're blessed? You got one person who slept with five different people and has got five babies, and then you got this one person who's been married to the same person for 10 years and doesn't have one.
You're like, I don't understand. I wanted them. They didn't even want that. I tried to do it God's way. Someone at your job lies, they get promoted. You tell the truth, you get fired. You're like, I don't understand. What's the point? The psalmist kind of saves it at the end. He goes, if I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. I love it that he caught himself, but I also love it that he didn't erase what he just wrote. He was like, I wilded out, my fault, my fault. I overspoke, my bad. I love it. I feel like he gives me permission to wild out in prayer sometimes. I say some things and I'll be like, I'm sorry, my bad. That was not good. I'm sorry, that was crazy, that was crazy. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. Verse 16, and when I tried to understand all this, it troubled me, look at this, until I entered the sanctuary of God. Then I understood their final destiny. If you're having trouble understanding what he means by their final destiny, have you ever met somebody who is skinny,
but they eat a lot of junk food? You're just like, man, they're just chomping down candy, pizza, milkshake, 120 pounds. You're like, you eat one slice of bread, 15 pounds. You're like, dang it, they can do everything that they want. They still look good. That's not fair, that's not fair. I'm doing the right things, and it's hard and all of that. That was me, that used to be me. I'm gonna be 40 in a few weeks, and my body no longer works the way that it used to, but that used to be me. Eat everything, and I remember one time, I thought I was bulking up, putting on muscle, eating whatever I wanted, and I went to get my body fat scanned, my muscle and my body fat scanned at a place called Adexafit, and so they scanned my body with a machine, and when I got off the machine, I thought I was gonna be crushing it. The lady looked at me, she was like, how good do you think you did? I was like, I think I did pretty great. She said, sir, you are morbidly obese. i said what i was like are we looking at the same body did you get my scans i said i don't where's the fat at and she said you can't see it but it's visceral fat if you don't know what visceral fat is visceral fat is the fat that surrounds your organs she says sir you can't see it but that's actually the fat that kills you early
here's what i need you to know anytime you look at somebody who looks like they're thriving on the outside learn from that story they're not really living they're really dying you just can't see it because on the outside it looks great but on the inside things are rotting bible says not their final destiny i remember their final destiny here's the third problem with serving god just for his benefits number three you believe god's check bounced now i'm gonna have to do some more educating here because we got some young people in that church this is a checkbook you might not have seen this let me explain what this is is in this check book are pieces of paper they are called checks they they look they look like this if you never seen one before it's got uh your name on it okay and then and there's a place you can pay people with these and so i'm gonna pay i'm gonna pay somebody i see i see cannons in the audience i'm gonna pay cannon i'm gonna write a check for cannon all right cannon's gonna get a check and it's for hundred dollars hundred dollars don't clap he ain't really getting it you're gonna make him think i'm giving him actual money he's gonna be sad when he doesn't get it then i i put four four what for being awesome being awesome and then i sign it all right now here's what you know about these checks they're not real money you don't take a check and go to walmart and go here's a hundred dollars it'd be like that's not money what you do with a check young person is you go to this place it's called the bank and you take this check to the bank and then the person gives you a hundred dollars out of that person who wrote you this checks bank account now if you give them this check and they go sorry we can't cash that check because there's no money in that person's account then that's what we call bouncing the check now while this check is not actually money it is a promise and it's a promise that is written in words and so it can be really frustrating when you take what you thought was a promise to the bank and the promise falls the words fall it bounces here's my question have you ever tried taking the word to the bank have you ever tried taking something that god said to the lord and going hey i'm just saying you said i'm just saying i gotta pay because i gotta pay the rent next month and i saw jehovah jireh my provider so i didn't write it you wrote it and then we try and take this words to the bank to cash out on a promise of god and then it doesn't happen and we're like
did god just bounce his check now now i'm not trying to get you to erode your confidence in the word of god anything but that the word of god is a firm foundation you can build your life on it but before you try and cash god's checks we need to realign who you think you are wow come on and we need to realign who you think god is all right and here's the first way we're going to realign this you cash this you are not god's employee you are god's servant employees go go check cashing because they are deserved something that they earned nothing about the christian life is earned everything about our life is given freely by the lord now when i say employee and servant you your mind doesn't even go there because you don't even know what a servant is because we live in a western society where we have hired hands employees and hired hands was a person in the bible It's just not the person Jesus mentioned Luke 17 7 suppose one of you has a what? Plowing or looking after sheep. Will you say to the? You're a servant And what is the biggest difference between an employee and a servant? I'm gonna tell you right now an employee works for you But a servant belongs to you now I know you're gonna have trouble processing when I'm about to preach because we don't understand people as property in today's world and rightfully so But when God says you are my servant, it is a very scary Also a very beautiful thing. What he is saying is you don't work for me You're mine You belong to me To help you understand this it might help you understand how servants become servants in the first place How does one become a servant? Well, there are really four ways But I'm gonna hit three and then I'll save the fourth for last The way that you become a servant in a home number one You're born into it if your parent was a servant then you were born in that household Then you are a servant by birth. So being a servant came through birth Another way would be through debt. If you owed a debt that you could not pay you would have to become a servant of the person
Whose debt you could not pay and so now you're a servant that way the third way is war and conquest So if you are a servant in another nation and another nation invaded that nation then found you and Delivered you and freed you awesome. But now you are the servant of the one that freed you This is important because I want you to think about all the ways that the Bible describes in the New Testament your salvation I want you to understand and think about all the ways that the Bible describes how you became a part of God's family The first thing it says is you are born again. I Think one of the greatest misconceptions about Christianity is that Christ came to make bad people good though He didn't he came to make dead people alive You were dead in your sins until Jesus found you you had no life in your lungs until Jesus found you I am a servant because he gave me life. He birthed me debt The Bible says that Christ purchased you that you were bought at a high price the price of his son Jesus Jesus his blood was expensive and he bought you so amen your debt has been paid But now you belong to the one who paid that debt How about war and conquest the Bible says that you used to be a resident in the kingdom of darkness? But when the when Jesus defeated Christ on the cross, he pulled you from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light He won you you are the spoils of his victory over the enemy You belong to him And listen and when I think about the person who gave me life When I think about the person who paid my debt when I think about the person who won me Here's the fourth way you become a servant You would look back at all the things your master did for you and you would volunteer out of love This is called being a bond servant You would look at all the things that your master did and go where will I find a better master than this? I want to give him the rest of my life That is how we ought to treat our service towards God, I don't need a rule I got you man You wear and you I have all things. I need you to I need you to really grasp the ridiculousness of Demanding reward from God for like just imagine that you tell your son or your daughter if you have a son or daughter Clean your room and they go sure dad How much we talking? And you like excuse me and they're like, yeah you want me to clean the room minimum wage in Florida
So what we talking 10 spot 20 spot how we do how we doing it I will You wouldn't be here If it wasn't for me Do you know how expensive the hospital bill was? Do you know all the money I have been paying to keep you alive Since you came here Do you know what I had to fight and get through it kills me that you do not love me enough to clean it because of who I am and Because of what I have already done in your life I look at that teenager teenager in the room. I look at you. I'm sorry Minimum wage in Florida might be whatever 15 16 17 14. I don't know. I'm a really disconnected But whatever it is in Florida, but you are not my employee. I would look at my son and daughter go you belong to me You belong to me you're mine. I Saw someone on internet bashing other church. They weren't bashing this church, but they were bashing in the church He said oh that church is a cult now listen Some churches are cults, but their definition of the word call had me like, okay, this person's off Someone said why is it a cult is it because they have people getting up in the morning 6 a.m. 5 30 a.m. Setting up their portable churches shout out our portable church set up team at Gateway, at Kissimmee, at University of East Orlando. They said, that church is a cult because they have people serving coffee in the lobby and they have people holding doors. And here's what they said, and no one gets paid for it. They just expect them to do it for free. And that's what I checked out. And I don't usually comment and I didn't, but if I did, I would have wrote this in the chat. I would have wrote, oh, I'm sorry.
Does someone pay you to do your dishes? Does someone pay you to sweep your floor? Does someone pay you to make your bed? This is my home. This is the house that God has created for me. I'm glad to serve in the house of my Lord. And the only reason why it looks crazy is because you keep looking at what I'm doing for Him without understanding first what He did for me. Because if you knew what He did for me, it wouldn't look so crazy. He put a roof over my head. Let me say it another way. When you serve God, don't expect a paycheck, expect a home. Expect a home. Expect a home. Serving, listen, serving isn't an exchange. It's a response. It's a response. Luke chapter 17, verse nine. Will He thank the servant because He did what He was told to do? Because there's some type of exchange. No, no, look at verse 10. So you also, when you have done everything you're told to do, should say, we are unworthy servants. We have only done our duty. I need you to learn what this word duty means
because in the Greek, the word duty means ophalo, ophalo. And I want you to learn that word and know that word because we don't really connect to the word duty. Outside of a military context, it's not a word that we will find often in our vocabulary. So what does the word duty mean? Ophalo. Well, where else do we see ophalo in the New Testament? It's one of the best ways if you're into studying scripture to figure out what a word means. It's find that word in another sentence in the Bible and see if there's the same meaning. Well, when you find this exact same word in the book of Romans, chapter 13, verse eight, Paul says, ophalo, no one, anything. Except the word is no longer duty, it's what? It's owe. And so now when we reread, I was just doing my duty, we see that the true definition of what Jesus is saying is, don't expect a thank you. You're just doing what you owed. See, your job is what you earn, but your duty is what you owe. I wish I could say that I serve my wife because I'm a good husband. I wish I could say that. She might say that. And some days, but some days I don't feel like that. But you know why I know for a fact I serve my wife?
Because of the way she serves me. I literally wake up every morning feeling in debt. I go to bed every night feeling in debt. She is like the greatest servant you will ever meet in your whole life. I even told my son, Zanus, when we were getting ready for him turning 13 and we're talking about life and we're talking about his future wife. And he's like, well, how will I know that I picked the right one? And I told him straight up, I'm like, find the one that looks the most like mommy on the inside. That's how you'll know. That's how you'll know. She's a servant. She loves, she cares. And she does the breakfast. She's humble. She cleans the house. And nobody, she chose that by the way. And just, she listens to you. She's just always thinking about what you want. And so I literally walk around like I'm in debt. And so whenever she asked me to do something on the house, I might make noises. I might, a little bit, you know. I might ask some questions. Is there an easier way to do this, you know? But at the end of the day,
I am moving whatever she asked to be moved, relocating and fixing whatever she asked me. Because I literally feel like I'm in debt. And that's a human person who cooks and cleans and loves and honors. How much more so a God who became flesh, took your sickness, your diseases, your sin, your choices, your mistakes, your issues on his shoulder, then went to heaven to intercede on behalf of you and me. So whenever the devil comes and attacks, he defends us. How much more the God who puts a breath in every, air in every breath, who gives us strength for every step. Come on now. Can I just remind you of something that you need to hear? God does not owe you. You owe him. You owe him. He didn't owe you, you owe him. And you gotta be very careful when you start to think that God owes you. When you start to think that God owes you for what you've done for him, it would only lead to two options. You were either gonna begin to demand from him, or you were gonna. try and retire from Him because you're gonna go, well I've been serving the Lord 20 years so I think I paid back my debt. I've been coming to church three years in a row. Whatever I owed to the Lord I've repaid. Are you kidding me right now? I've been serving God since I was 12 years old and I will be serving God to the day that I die. Why? Because every inhalation of oxygen is a debt that I owe Him and when I get to heaven I'll be spending all of eternity
worshiping Him for what He has done in my life. Don't you retire from church? Don't you ever retire from prayer? Don't you ever retire from worship? Don't you ever retire from faith? Don't ever retire from Jesus? You keep on serving, you keep on loving, you keep on praising, you keep up insulting, you have amassed a debt you could never repay. The blood of Jesus still drips. The blood of Jesus is still paying for you. Every day you fail and every day you make a mistake, the blood still pays. You don't owe Him. He don't owe you, you owe Him. Let me give you this last thing. I got 40 seconds left but you need to hear this. This last thing is gonna super duper offend you but it's good for you to hear. You're not just a servant, ready? You're an unworthy servant. It'll be like, I didn't come to church to hear this. No, no, actually, actually this is actually really good news. What do you mean unworthy servant? It's great news. You just got offended because you don't know what unworthy means. See when you hear unworthy you think worthless. He didn't say worthless. He said unworthy. When you look at the greek word for unworthy it's archaeos and here's what it means, unprofitable. Can we put this on the screen because I'm gonna have you do some fun word studies with me. Archaeos means unprofitable. Now what does unprofitable mean? Unprofitable doesn't mean that there is no value. If something is worth a thousand dollars in 2026 and that same thing is worth a thousand dollars in 2027 and that same thing is worth a thousand dollars in 2028 and that same thing is worth a thousand dollars in 2029, is that thing profitable? No, because the value has not what? Has not increased. It has not changed. Oh my gosh. So unprofitable does not mean not valuable. Unprofitable means the value stays the same. I know you had it. It's okay to say that you haven't gotten it yet but you got to get it. What it means is that there is nothing you can do that can add value to who you are in God's sight because you were already valuable to begin with. Are you hearing me? It means it doesn't matter how much you pray, how much you come to church, how much you serve God because you already were valuable to begin with. It doesn't change. Why? Because an employee works for you but a servant belongs to you. You are valuable because you belong to Jesus. Pastor Liz, she's got a chip tooth. She's got scoliosis in her spine. She's starting to get wrinkles and gray hair. By the way, those are all things that she told me on like Thursday. I would never. I would never. These are all things that she told me and when she's looked at me and she's like, I heard this and I got that and I got that and I was like, I love it. I said, that's my chip tooth. I love you. I'm gonna love you so hard when you get old. I'm gonna love you
so. Why? Because I'm beautiful because you're mine because you belong to me and I belong to you. Here's what you need to hear. Here's what I'm trying to get at. At your worst, you are no less valuable to God and at your best, you are no more valuable to God. This is what unworthy means that your value does not change because you belong to him. Let me give you this and I'll pray for you. Don't expect a conditional reward. I got something better. Expect an unconditional love, an unconditional love. If you bow your heads and close your eyes, listen to me. The real reward is not money, cars, healing, blessing, open doors, a wife, children. The real reward is Jesus Christ. The real reward is Jesus Christ. Jesus gets to look at you and say, you belong to me, but you get to look at Jesus and go, and you belong to me. And in Christ, every need is met. In Christ, every promise is fulfilled. In Christ, every check that he writes in scripture is fulfilled. It does not bounce in Christ. When you make Christ the reward, Christ the effort, the one you chase christ is the one jesus said i am coming soon and i am bringing with me my reward with me my reward if you're in this room today and you feel like god has broken a promise to you like you've been serving and you deserve better i'm going to give you 30 seconds to repent ask for forgiveness and just apologize to jesus for what for coming off like he owes you something god forgive me if i ever fell victim to the lie that you are somehow in my debt i can never repay calvary i can never repay the cross i can never repay your death and resurrection i can never repay this life of eternity you've given me forgive me lord and if you're in this room watching online at any of our campuses and you don't have a relationship with jesus hear me jesus is the reward if you decide to give your life to jesus today to make him the lord of your life i cannot promise you cars i cannot promise you homes i cannot promise you promotions i cannot promise the cancer will go away but if you decide to give your life to jesus today i can promise you jesus and i can promise you this that jesus will be everything that you need i promise that's you when you're in this room when you want to make a decision to follow jesus and join the 10 000 people that decided in these last 10 years and on the count of three i want you to raise your hand and say i want to give jesus my life all over this room one two if that's you don't be ashamed god is in the room one two three would you raise your right hand high if that's you come on i see so many hands all over this building so many hands i know there's more additional seating i know there's some at east and some at kesemi whether you raise your hand or not let's everyone pray this prayer out loud everyone say father god today i give you
my life today i choose you and in return i expect not silver not gold not blessings not homes i expect jesus and i expect in jesus to have every desire be met every need be filled jesus i give you my all and i receive all of you in your name we pray amen and amen come on let's put our hands together welcome those that made a decision to follow jesus if that's you and you made a decision to follow jesus take your phone welcome back journey church online if you decided to give your life to christ rededicate your heart back to this our savior congratulations we want to walk with you we want to be able to give you any resources that you can actually be in need of scan the qr code below or you can go to journey or l.com for that decisions and let us know that you decided to give your life to god or give you rededicate your life back to christ we want to celebrate with you all of heaven is rejoicing and today is ordained it was set apart it was done on purpose it's not by accident that you came to journey church online and are watching so thank you for tuning in we're going to take it back to our studio host chantelle my boy javon and kyla take it away y'all thank you so much jd we appreciate that and just like jd said if you just gave your life to christ and man welcome home okay i'm telling you this is a blessed place you could possibly be on jesus's team okay come on come on man what a word what a word what a word no it was honestly so good god who wants to go first because i feel like there's so much that we could talk about i think javon should go first okay okay so i just think like what we're like really expecting like it's just it kills to know that how can i really put this in words it was so much it really kills to know that i really don't have to do nothing i gave you birth i gave you love i had to go to war for you i had to pay off these hospital debts just to make sure you live just for you to clean your room it's like god does so much for us he does that's right all that he's the reason why we're alive he's the reason why we have bodies to move he's the reason why we could go so far and do so much and it takes us so much just to do one simple task that he wants from us yeah that's real yeah and i'll piggyback off of that just thinking about how he said we're not his employee we're his servant right that's and i think with just the world that we live in we're always thinking about okay like this is i clock in and this is where i work and this is what i gotta do and these are the rules and i got a point system and i and god's like oh you are my servant like i need you to just do what i ask you to do that's right you want to and because you know what i did for you i think it's understanding and really like taking into like heed like wow like god did so much for me and then at least i could do like lord like i bow down i worship you
like you know so if you're on the other side of the screen you don't know what that means or like what do you mean being a servant that doesn't sound right it just means it's like letting it be more of him and less of you truly that's what i've got absolutely that's so good and the more we're talking it reminds me of this verse that um it says it's his kindness that leads us to repentance which means it's his grace it's his mercy that all that he's done for us, when we look back over our lives and we see moments in which we realized that the outcome could have been very different, but God decided to intervene on my behalf. And so I think that was one thing that really stuck with me and just knowing that Jesus is the ultimate reward. I think in such a materialistic and money-driven world that we're in, it can be easy to get caught up in the external rewards, but really our reward is eternal. If we keep our eyes on God, I mean, I'm just like the spirit cook. I'm just like the spirit cook. But no, seriously. So I don't know. I wanna hear what you guys got from the message because it absolutely blessed me and just, I feel like it rewired my brain in a way. So good. Man, we could go all day, but luckily we got the after talk coming on after this. That's right, you guys can dive in more with what Pastor JJ was just talking about. There is more, don't you worry.
And another thing that you guys can do, remember, join our community, join our online community, scan the QR code below, get the app. Man, there's so much that Journey has for you. There's so many different ways that we can be connected. Right? That's so good. Another great way, I know we were just talking about after talk. So if you haven't already, make sure, I know you're probably watching us on YouTube, so make sure you subscribe to Journey's YouTube channel. That way when a new episode drops or if we have any new content, you are the first to know about it and you can get tuned into what we're doing here at Journey. Yeah, absolutely. And actually there's other ways, other than the YouTube app, you actually download the Journey Church app. That's right. Where you also get the after talk, all the past after talks in one place. You get all the sermons in one place. You get the worship on Wednesdays. Also, you can also find the resources that you need to learn how to fast, to learn how to pray, how can I meet with God? The app is just a one-stop shop for everything.
Yeah, that's right. Even next steps. We were talking to you guys about next steps one a little bit earlier, but next steps two is around the corner. So you guys can also join in that. That's when you can figure out your God-given gifts. You can know what the Lord wants to do with you and what he has for you to do in his kingdom. It's about being a servant and he's ready for you to serve. So if that's you ready to do it, go ahead and scan that QR code below and get connected. Okay? That's right. But Journey Church fam, we're sad to say that this is the end, but that's okay because we will see you right back here next week. That's right. So bye. It was good to see you guys. Bye. Bye.
