How To Walk In Peace // Como Caminar En Paz
Because next week... Our lead pastor begins a brand new series... The word Colleen... My crazy family... How many guys got a crazy family here? So many guys are like, "Yeah, you're sitting right next to me." And we're going to be talking about family. Because family is a part of our lives. And it impacts our lives. So what do we do with the problems we face every single day? What do we do with the mess at home? What do we do with the mess at home? We'll talk about God's plan. We'll talk about God's plan. Our mess. But his promise. So I'm excited you want to miss that? But today we are in the conclusion. Of the series we started a month ago. We're less live more. Because we often worry about everything. We worry about our lives, our relationships, our country... But if you're in high school and college... A study said that you guys have a big challenge ahead. Because you guys are the most stressed out generation in recent history. Because you guys worry about everything. Because you guys worry about everything. Which college am I going to go to? Do I take our student loans? If I graduate, what I have enough money to pay off the student loans?
I don't want to get married. I don't want to be myself. I don't want to marry someone crazy. I don't want to marry someone crazy. Because I've seen a lot of crazies. But if you're married, did I marry someone crazy? Am I crazy? How are my kids going to turn out? What if I do everything right and they still turn out bad? And we worry about everything. Oh my gosh I'm getting older. I'm getting wrinkles. We worry so much about the future. In fact, so much that anxiety is rising. And we actually get anxious for three reasons. You can write this down. We are anxious because the past, the present, and the future. But besides that, we're good. We struggle so much with the past. We worry about the past. We stress out as if we can change it. We get stressed about the present. And we project our worry onto the future. We get so worried about everything. And I love Paul the Apostle. We find him wanting to go to Rome to preach the message of Jesus. But now he finds himself in prison. But yet even though he's in prison. He doesn't know his outcome. The future is uncertain.
He doesn't know how long he'll be there. Whether he would live or die. Yet somehow in prison. He writes this. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again, rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything but in every situation. By prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And here's a promise. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. So there's a couple adjustments we need to make in our lives. If we're ever going to experience the peace of God. So I want to give you three things that we need to fix in our lives. So, if you're taking notes, you can write this down. this down. -A regular to spend some yentos. -Fix your thoughts. -A regular to spend some yentos. -See, the problem with our thoughts. -A problem with our thoughts. -We try to delete them one thought at a time. -Eskit, tratamos nosotros de borar los unpensamientalabes. -And we say, "I'm not going to think about it." -In semos, no way of inciting it. -But the more we try not to think about it... -But in tremas, tratamos, no pensarying it. -The more we think about it. -Mas pensamos en ejos. -And we are trapped in our minds. -I don't know if you remember, while when we were kids. -When we were kids, when we would make dumb faces, silly faces... -What? Our parents will tell us. -So we can stop. -If you keep making that face... -It's going to stay that way.
-I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -I will cross my eyes. -But I understood what she was saying. -If you keep making that face... -You are going to stay that way. -It's the same with your thinking. -If you keep thinking that way... -You keep thinking that way... -You are going to keep living that way. -Because your thinking drives your living. -Because the presence of anxiety is unavoidable. -But the prison of anxiety is optional. -This is why Paul continues. -And he says this. -Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure. -Whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things. -And the God of Peace will be with you. -So here's a principle. -Thoughts can't be erased, they have to be replaced. -You need to replace the thoughts with God's truth. -If you need to think the right stuff, so your mind can be protected. -If you're telling God to protect your mind... -If you're telling God to protect your mind... -Make sure you don't give the devil a key to the back door. -Because he will use your thought life. -To disrupt the peace that God is giving you. -See, it doesn't get cold here in Florida. -Maybe a couple of days out of the entire year. -It actually gets cold. -What else we live in Florida? -And we can't take it. -We can't handle it. -It's not fun anymore.
-It's not cool anymore. -I don't want to wear my scarf anymore. -It's too much for us to handle. -This one occasion I had the heater on in my car. -That was freezing. -I felt the air. -But it was still cold. -10 minutes later. -I realized something. -My windows were cracked open. -So the heat that will come in? -It would just go out. -See, I think a lot of us are living our lives with the windows down. -That the peace God is giving you. -It's just going out the window. -And you wonder why you don't feel peace. -When God promised peace. -You wonder why your prayers aren't working. -They're working. -But you have the window open. -Because if you let your negative thoughts win. -It would drive out the peace that God is trying to put in. -So how do we replace our thoughts? -You write this down. -Don't listen to yourself, but talk to yourself. -See, there's a big difference between being a coach and a critic. - See, a critic points out the flaws and gives no solutions. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - It's easy to be a critic. - [SPEAKING SPANISH]
- Anyone can do it. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But to be a coach. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - That's different. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Because being a coach is actually helpful. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - It's actually encouraging. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - I didn't score the goal. I'm such a horrible player. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - No, no, you're going to be all right. - No, no, no. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Next time you'll do better. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You are close. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But next time you'll do better. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - See, if you allow the voice of the critic. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Because we all have an inner critic. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - When you listen to the voice of the critic. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Always discourage your life. - [SPEAKING SPANISH]
- When you listen to yourself. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But when you talk to yourself. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You become a coach. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You become the coach that you need. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Because the critic will always tell you. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You're not enough. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You're not brave enough, you're not strong enough. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You're not good enough. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Always going to struggle. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You're always going to struggle financially. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You're always going to be alone. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - There's no future for you. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - So why even try? - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Your kids are going to continue to go through the wrong path. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But one of the most spiritual things you can do to yourself.
- [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Is encourage yourself in the Lord. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Because this is what David did. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - See, David is in deep distress. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - There's people looking for him to stone him. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - There's problems on the outside and fear on the inside. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But look at what David does. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But David encouraged himself in the Lord, his God. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - See some of you guys, you need to start talking to yourself. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You need to start encouraging yourself in the Lord. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - When you say, you know what? You hear the voice of the critic. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But I'm going to silence that voice. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - And I'm going to believe that you know what my God is with me. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - My God will provide. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Greater is he who is with me than he who is in the world. - [SPEAKING SPANISH]
- No matter what's happening in my life. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - What the devil meant for evil. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - God will turn around for his good. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - God says I am more than an overcomer. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - God is near, God is present. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - I'm going to be all right. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - I'm going to make it through this. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - I serve a God who will make away when there is no way. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You need to talk to yourself. - Don't listen to yourself. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - But what happens? - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - When anxiety and worry doesn't leave. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Because some of you guys know the reality of anxiety. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You know how powerful it is. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You've had panic attacks that have been horrible. - [SPEAKING SPANISH]
- [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Because you lost someone you loved. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - And now you fear everyone in your life in losing them. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - And there are certain things in your life. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Certain places and certain holidays. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - That they triggered the trauma of your past. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - And once again, you begin to relive that moment. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You feel the terror. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - You feel like you can't trust. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - And you feel it paralyzes your life. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - And I believe that Paul gives us the anecdote to anxiety. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - He said in verse seven. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - The Greek word for guard. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Is this image? - [SPEAKING SPANISH]
- Of your heart and your mind. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] - Being protected by heavenly soldiers. - [SPEAKING SPANISH] (speaking in foreign language) - So let me say it this way. - Anxiety compared lives, but peace were neutralized. (speaking in foreign language) - You see, scientists believe that the roar of a lion is so powerful. (speaking in foreign language) - It can travel up to five miles. (speaking in foreign language) - And some of them believe. (speaking in foreign language) - That the roar of a lion is so powerful. (speaking in foreign language) - It can literally stun its prey. (speaking in foreign language) - You know, scripture says we have an enemy. (speaking in foreign language) - And he prowls around like a roaring lion. (speaking in foreign language) - Seeking who to devour. (speaking in foreign language) - And the enemy will use the worries and anxieties and fears. (speaking in foreign language) - To keep you paralyzed where you are. (speaking in foreign language) - You hear the roar of the enemy.
(speaking in foreign language) - And it stops you where you are. (speaking in foreign language) - And you know that has more. (speaking in foreign language) - You know that has a plan. (speaking in foreign language) - But for some reason, you can't move past the struggle. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - Because you hear the roar of the first lion. (speaking in foreign language) - And it's paralyzing your life. (speaking in foreign language) - But can I tell you? (speaking in foreign language) - There's another roar. (speaking in foreign language) - There's another lion. (speaking in foreign language) - Scripture calls him the lion of the tribe of Judah. (speaking in foreign language) - And his name is Jesus. (speaking in foreign language) - And this lion is greater. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - This lion is higher. (speaking in foreign language) - This lion has more power.
(speaking in foreign language) - You hear the roar of the first lion. (speaking in foreign language) - And that lion brings fear and paralyzes your life. (speaking in foreign language) - But the second lion. (speaking in foreign language) - brings peace and sets your life free. (speaking in foreign language) - See, anxiety can paralyze. (speaking in foreign language) - But the peace of God. (speaking in foreign language) - Will neutralize that anxiety. (speaking in foreign language) - This is why Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10, 5. (speaking in foreign language) - That we ought to take every thought captive. (speaking in foreign language) - And make it obedient to Christ. (speaking in foreign language) - Meaning when anxiety comes. (speaking in foreign language) (speaking in foreign language) - You have a choice. (speaking in foreign language) - Am I going to feed it? (speaking in foreign language) - Or will I force it to the feet of Jesus? (speaking in foreign language)
- So we need to fix our thinking. (speaking in foreign language) - Number two. (speaking in foreign language) - Fix your posture. (speaking in foreign language) - Fix your posture. (speaking in foreign language) - There's a psychologist and professor. (speaking in foreign language) - The name of Jordan Peterson. (speaking in foreign language) - And he wrote a book titled, "12 Rules for Life." (speaking in foreign language) - And in his first chapter. (speaking in foreign language) - He titled it, "Stand Up Straight With Your Shoulders Back." (speaking in foreign language) - And he begins to talk about the lobster. (speaking in foreign language) - You see, he says that a lobster's often fight for territory and dominance. (speaking in foreign language) - And when a lobster wins a fight. (speaking in foreign language) - You know what it does? (speaking in foreign language) - It stretches himself. (speaking in foreign language) - It makes himself look bigger.
(speaking in foreign language) - But studies say. (speaking in foreign language) - That when a lobster loses enough fights. (speaking in foreign language) - Therefore losing social status. (speaking in foreign language) - It stops producing serotonin. (speaking in foreign language) - Leading the lobster to deep depression. (speaking in foreign language) - You see, serotonin is a hormone that stabilizes your emotion. (speaking in foreign language) - And what happens to this defeated lobster. (speaking in foreign language) - It shrinks and curls up. (speaking in foreign language) - And he is unwilling to fight. (speaking in foreign language) - But if you give a lobster serotonin. (speaking in foreign language) - Something happens to him. (speaking in foreign language) - Because serotonin, it's found in anti-depressant medication. (speaking in foreign language) - So something happens to this defeated lobster. (speaking in foreign language) - Once again, it stretches himself. (speaking in foreign language)
- And he's willing to fight again. (speaking in foreign language) - And this time he's willing to fight longer and harder. (speaking in foreign language) - You see, scientists say that humans and lobsters. (speaking in foreign language) - Because when you have been defeated in life... - You know how you feel? - You feel small. - We feel small. We feel worthless. - We were hit with the pain of life. - Something happens to us. - We're unwilling to fight. - We feel like there's no hope. - And we change our posture. - And we put our head down and our shoulders down. - And we begin to walk in this life with the posture of defeat. - But you're not a defeated lobster. - You're a child of the living God. - You're a child of the living God. - You're a child of the living God. - You're a child of the living God. - You have victory because of Jesus. - So stand up straight. - Put your shoulders back in Jesus' name. - Because you are victorious. - You see, and there's two powerful things happen when you stand up straight. - You remind yourself to be confident. - Because you can't be confident with your head down. - Because your posture actually affects your emotions.
- Because your posture actually affects your emotions. - And the second thing. - When you stand up straight. - You're saying I accept responsibility with a task in front of me. - You know this, you've been there. - It's the moment you feel defeated. - It's the moment you feel defeated. - And you take that deep breath. - It's the moment you feel defeated. - Because I'm going to move forward. - It's what Noah had to do. - It's what Noah had to do. - When God called him to build an arch. - When God called him to build an arch. - When God called him to build an arch. - When God called him to build an arch. - When God called him to build an arch. - When God called him to build an arch. - When God called him to build an arch. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free.
- When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free. - When God called him to set his people free.
So the one who's higher than me. [SPEAKING SPANISH] So the one who's greater than me. [SPEAKING SPANISH] To the one that's stronger than me. [SPEAKING SPANISH]
To the one that's above my situation. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Because I can't do this without you, God. [SPEAKING SPANISH] We need to fix our thinking. [SPEAKING SPANISH] We need to fix our posture. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And number three. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Fix your worship. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Fix your worship. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Paul says do not be anxious about anything. [SPEAKING SPANISH] But in every situation. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Give thanks to God. [SPEAKING SPANISH] In other words-- [SPEAKING SPANISH] Let your life be marked by gratitude. [SPEAKING SPANISH] [SPEAKING SPANISH] We find this incredible story in Acts chapter 16. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Once again, we find the life of Paul. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And he's with this man named Silas.
[SPEAKING SPANISH] They're doing the right thing. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Preaching the message of Jesus. [SPEAKING SPANISH] But they end up in the wrong place. [SPEAKING SPANISH] They're in prison. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Look at what happens in prison. [SPEAKING SPANISH] About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing the hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. [SPEAKING SPANISH] So I want you to give this in your mind. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Picture it. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Paul and Silas. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Beaten, bruised up, thrown into prison. [SPEAKING SPANISH] They're chained up. [SPEAKING SPANISH] When life happens to you. [SPEAKING SPANISH] You feel defeated. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And I can see Paul.
[SPEAKING SPANISH] Chained up. [SPEAKING SPANISH] With his head down. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Shoulders down. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Stuck in his mind. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Wrestling with his thoughts. [SPEAKING SPANISH] I'm never going to get out of here. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Did God really call me here? [SPEAKING SPANISH] I can't make a difference. [SPEAKING SPANISH] I wonder if this is a picture. [SPEAKING SPANISH] How you feel emotionally. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Chained up with your shoulders down. [SPEAKING SPANISH] The posture of defeat. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And you can't see your way out of this. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Can you imagine Paul? [SPEAKING SPANISH] With tears down his eyes.
[SPEAKING SPANISH] I'm never-- this is it for me. [SPEAKING SPANISH] He hears the roar of the first lion. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And he's paralyzed in fear. [SPEAKING SPANISH] But something begins to happen. [SPEAKING SPANISH] He hears the voice of the second lion. [SPEAKING SPANISH] He hears the voice of Jesus. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And he begins to think. [SPEAKING SPANISH] No, he's called me. No, [SPEAKING SPANISH] He's with me. [SPEAKING SPANISH] I'm not defeated. [SPEAKING SPANISH] My god is with me. [SPEAKING SPANISH] My god is present. [SPEAKING SPANISH] My god is near. [SPEAKING SPANISH] He's here. [SPEAKING SPANISH] I'm going to be all right.
[SPEAKING SPANISH] I might not be able to preach out there. [SPEAKING SPANISH] [SPEAKING SPANISH] But I'll preach in here. [SPEAKING SPANISH] I'll preach to the guards. [SPEAKING SPANISH] I'll preach to the other prisoners. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And little by little, as he's fixing his thinking. [SPEAKING SPANISH] [SPEAKING SPANISH] He takes a deep breath. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Put his shoulders back. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And he looks at Silas. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Silas is there. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Defeated. [SPEAKING SPANISH] A Silas. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Fix your thinking. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And fix your posture. [SPEAKING SPANISH] I know it doesn't look like victory.
[SPEAKING SPANISH] I know everything points to defeat. [SPEAKING SPANISH] But Silas. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Victory is not a place. [SPEAKING SPANISH] Victory is a person. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And his name is Jesus. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And he's called us. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And we were creative for such a time like this. [SPEAKING SPANISH] And Silas, I got good news. - They could chain up my hands. - They could chain up my feet. - They could chain up my feet. - They could chain up my feet. - But they forgot to chain up the one thing that moves heaven and earth. - They forgot to chain up the one thing that moves heaven and earth. - They forgot to chain up the one thing that has the power of life and death. - They forgot to chain up the one thing that has the power of life and death. - They forgot to chain up the one thing that has the power of life and death. - They forgot to chain up our tongues. - They forgot to chain up our tongues. - They forgot to chain up our tongues. - They forgot to chain up our tongues. - They forgot to chain up our tongues.
