How To Live A Long & Blessed Life | Road Trip | Pastor Tim Payne
Great worship is different than great singing. Great worship is your response to the presence of God. That's what worship is. It's my response to the presence of God. It can look different for all of us, but I'm thankful for the music. I'm thankful for the musicians, production, so we can see it. But of all things, I'm most thankful for your heart. I'm most thankful. This is a church that loves God. It's a church, man. We ain't perfect, man. But you know what? We're not what we used to be. We may not always be everything we're supposed to be, but we ain't what we used to be. I'm sorry if your English teacher, school's out. I said, ain't. I'm sorry. But I'm thankful, man. I'm thankful for a response, thankful for a pastor, Pastor Michael, for you to lead us, man, for your heart, your love for God, to lead us in spirit and in truth. You go to some churches and it's just truth. I go to some churches, just spirit. I was like, well, where was the truth? You know, I'm thankful that we get to what we get to. We don't have to. It's not a burden. We get to worship him in spirit and in truth. And he is here today. And so I don't know what voice keeps speaking. But while we were finishing that, I sensed the Holy Spirit was saying they need this.
Don't tell the other two gatherings they didn't get that. Y'all got the bonus feature. But the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, there are people in here that there's, there's been voice voices in your head, accusing you, attacking you, hurting you. And God just says today for you, there's one name that is over and above all that. That's the name Jesus. And when you speak it, hell goes, oh no. I think hell just had a big, oh no moment because you did it so good. We're in this series, a family road trip, and our family has taken several road trips this summer. I'm talking about the ones where you drive, you know what I'm saying? And we, we've been to Tennessee twice and back. We've been to Dallas. We flew to New York City. I like road trips. But I want to tell you, there's no place like home. No place like home. I like my bed. It's a Tempur-Pedic. It's comfortable. There's no hotel, no friends or family bed. It's like, you know, your bed, you know what I'm saying? And if it's not that way, you can change it. But there's no place like coming back into, flying back into Pensacola or driving back in, crossing the bridges, looking at the water and thinking, God, thank you. I live here. We live here. This is incredible place. Family road trip. We've been talking about the 10 commandments and, and Moses has a moment where he blows
it. Any, anybody ever been there where you just kind of blew the moment? You said some things you shouldn't have said. You did some things. You just kind of let it all out. Moses is coming down the mountain. He's got the word of God. He's got these two stone tablets. I don't know how big they are, but I imagine they, they weren't light. And he's carrying these down the mountain and he sees the children of Israel and they're worshiping false idols. And one of the last things God said to him was, don't have any other gods before me. And he left his brother in charge and it went downhill from there. But his brother knew better. But his brother, because of fear of man, gave into the pressure of the people. And he said, do whatever y'all want. And it's never good to do whatever y'all want. You know, like Burger Kings, have it your own way. You know, like maybe for Burger King, but for everything else, have it however you want. Doesn't lead our culture. Doesn't lead our society. Doesn't lead our families, our home, our communities. Doesn't lead it to a good place. And he sees that and he takes the tablets and he throws them down, they break. And then God's like, alright, go get two more big tablets of stone, uncut. Carry them back up the mountain. What's better than one time up the mountain? Another time up. And, and when we don't learn our lesson sometimes, God will let us repeat. And then when we mess up, God will give us another opportunity.
There's two sides to that coin. So here he goes up and God speaks to him again and he's like, I'm not going to do this again. You know. And he comes down the mountain with the word of God. Now here's what's cool. In the New Testament, fast forward to the Gospels. They're trying, the Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus. And they say to Jesus, they say, what's the great, of all the commandments, rabbi, master, teacher, of all of them, which one's the greatest? And Jesus did something so incredible, I don't even know if we know it. But what, what did Jesus say? Jesus said, he quoted Deuteronomy. And he said, you must love the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your, yeah, with all three. And then Jesus took the next step and he said, and the second. And it's like equal to it. Love your what? Neighborhoods yourself. So here's what's cool. When Moses was coming down the mountain, Moses was the savior of Israel at that time. This was a pre-picture of who Jesus would be. So they were supposed to see Jesus in Moses and how Moses delivered them. One day the Messiah would be the old, y'all with me, I haven't lost anyone. So this was like a prototype. Moses was a prototype of Christ who was coming. And when Jesus said, yeah, yeah, all the commandments, here's the greatest one.
Love your Lord, your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. Here's what he did. He quoted the 10 commandments. And what he did is he simplified the two stone tablets into the first stone, which had the first four commandments of 10, which taught us how to love God. The first four was everything about how we were to love God. How do you love God? You don't have any other idols. God wants to be your everything, your first. You don't take his name in vain. So the first tablet taught us how to love God correctly. And the second tablet had six and that taught us how to love man. How are we to get along with God? Vertically, how are we to love people? Horizontally. And Jesus simplified all 10 commandments with love the Lord, your God with all of your heart, mind, soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. That's the 10 commandments, simplified, simplified. So today we're tablet number two and we're starting with the first one. The first one that is speaking to us of how do we relate? How do we respond to our parents? How many of you still live at home? I'd like you to stand up. If you still live at home, I'm talking to like,
if you're in elementary, third grade, because we got some of you on here. If you're in middle school, if you're in high school, if you're in college, awesome, awesome. Y'all are incredible too. Raise your hand if you went to camp. Let me see, look at all these that went to camp. Look at that, isn't that awesome? It's so good. One camp fun, we loved it man, it was so good. Okay, now stay standing and if, stay standing. If you're standing, say go, there we go. And if you are a dependent, that means if your mom and dad paid for anything for you, like example, insurance, a phone bill, maybe you say, hey, then mow me some money because I'm out of gas. You're a dependent, raise your hand if that's you and you're standing. Okay, all right, good stuff, all right, all right. I love young people, you guys are amazing. Y'all be seated. Well, let's get into it today. I've got a message and listen, some of the time I'm gonna be talking, last gathering we had all the kids down front and so my work was really cut out for me. I had third graders, fourth grade, which I wanted it like that, fifth graders. But the message is for everyone and some of it,
listen, some of it adults, it's gonna hit us, it'll take us back to our youth. Some of us though, it's gonna hit us in our parenting. Some of us, it's gonna hit you right where you are in middle school because you're in a funk and you don't know why. And some of you, it's gonna be like, man, I'm starting to get it, I'm starting to understand adulting isn't everything I thought it was. You know, it's a little harder than I thought it was. It's gonna hit us all at different points. And my prayer for you guys is that your heart will just be open because God's got such a mighty word for you. I was here all day yesterday. From morning, I left at 11.30 and God just kept working this message in me. And you know, anyone ever get a massage? This was like a deep tissue massage. You know, God kept like, ah, you know. And so, after this gathering, I will have said everything God wanted me to say for three gatherings. And here's the cool thing. Our homes are gonna be better, happier, holier. So Lord, would you give us all ears to hear? Because I believe most of us here, like, we want to grow in our relationship with God. And how do you do that? You do that by hearing the word.
You can't know it if you don't hear it. So you gotta tune in. So we gotta know it, which means we gotta hear it. And then we gotta do it. We gotta walk that way. And so, sometimes, as I'm studying, I'm like, woo, Lord, that convicts me. And so this message is convicting, but it's a great message. And I'm telling you, it's like a great chiropractor. They'll get, like, it will get your spine back in line. And you know, when we get our families back in line, kind of like when you get your spine back in line, all of a sudden, the whole world's fine. Everything's good again, you know? You walk out of the chiropractor, you're like, woo, I feel good, I feel like a million dollars. Well, we're gonna do that. Lord's gonna do that today with our homes, so. How many want to live a long, full life? You want to live a long, full life? Not a trick question, right? Long, yeah, sign me up for that one. I'm gonna want to live a full. Like you want to, I'm talking about significance, not just success. I'm talking about like, man, you want to see your kids and see your grandkids, maybe even your great-grandkids. My niece just had a baby. I got to hold my niece. I was like, I'm old. But like, how cool is it that it seems like yesterday I'm throwing snowballs at her in Nashville and now she's handing me her baby girl for the first time. And so I'm thankful. Three, three weeks ago or so, I stood on here and I shared with you guys that God will give us stored-up mercy, that sometimes we are as successful as we are, as blessed as we are, not because of even us, but because there is stored-up mercy. When we obey God, God literally stores up
mercy for our future. Yeah, that ought to get you excited. I'd be like, thank you, Lord. God told David, hey, a thousand generations, I'm gonna load up mercy for your family. And he did. And David messed up. And that gives me hope because I've messed up too. You with me? But I'm thankful. My kids are going to be blessed because I'm blessed. I stood on this stage a couple weeks ago and said, I'm thankful for my great heritage. I'm thankful for my grandparents that had a Bible on their coffee table, big family Bible. I'm thankful for my great grandfather who knew God and loved God. And this week in Tennessee, my uncle gave me such a gift. He gave me this Bible. He gave me this Bible. It was my great grandfather's Bible. Anyone want to, that wasn't here, the other two gatherings, anyone want to guess how old this Bible is? 1893. I'm thankful for godly heritage. How many want to leave your family, your future family, a godly heritage? Then we must pay attention to the Word of God. Would you stand out of respect just to make a point here? I know we're standing before, but we're gonna, we're gonna demonstrate honor, which is giving high esteem to someone or something. And we're gonna read this first. I'm gonna teach it, preach it, we're gonna get out of here. It's found in Exodus chapter 20 and it says this, oh by the way, last week, what a phenomenal message. If I didn't say it already, Pastor Jimmy, phenomenal message on the Sabbath. Honestly, best message I've ever heard on the Sabbath. It was so good. The week before that, Pastor Steph brought us an incredible message. It was so good. So, so good. Don't take his name in vain. So good. So I'm feeling the pressure today. Let's go. Here we go. Honor your father and your mother. Honor. Someone say honor. Honor your father and mother. Then you will, whenever you read then, the context of the verse is conditional. So we don't add to God's Word. We don't subtract from God's Word. We don't get to do that. God's Word is not like a buffet. This is not Golden Corral. We pick what we like. We don't pick what we don't like. No, this, all of it is for us. We need it all. So let the church say amen. So conditional. So you could read it. If you honor your father and mother, watch this, then you will live a long, full life. Once again, not a trick question. Last gathering I said it with the kids on the floor. How many of you want to live a
long, full life? You know, and the kids were raising their arms. Long, full life. Now watch this. If you honor your father and mother, then you will live a long, full life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You may be seated. I believe when the saddest things in heaven, will we be sad in heaven? Well, the Bible says there'll be tears in heaven. So God cannot wipe away the tears from our eyes if there are no tears. So there will be tears. I think one of the reasons for the tears, I think it's just gonna be joy. Good, happy tears. When we're like, oh my gosh. I think the tears will be when we see family and friends that have gone before us. I think it would be amazing tears. But I think some of the tears are gonna be, at some point, regret of the people that weren't there. Because maybe we didn't share. Maybe some of the tears are because we see so many blessings. It's kind of like Christmas presents. You know, give me everyone that's got my name on it. And I believe there'll be some gifts in heaven that we realize had our name on it, but we never received it. And the reason why we never received it is because we didn't obey. We didn't listen. And we and miss out. I don't want to miss out. I know you don't want to miss out So today this is a gift that God says. Hey, I've got something for you and it's not just a commandment It's not a suggestion. It is a commandment But it also comes with a promise This is the first commandment that God ever gave that comes with the promise if you honor You will live a long full life. I Want to live a long full life. I know you do a couple contexts here for Ten Commandments I don't know if you realize this but the fabric of our country in fact of society is the Ten Commandments There are Countries across this world where they know killing is wrong. You're not to murder Stealing is wrong in some countries. You'll lose a hand if you still You'll lose your life if you kill it comes from the Ten Commandments. This was the foundation for all ethics Foundation for all public morality and even though people have tried to separate
Religion and morality and some people have you can never separate God and morality Because God is moral Always it God is so moral that he gave us the Ten Commandments To teach us what sin was So the law Moses law the Ten Commandments This was given to us as a school teacher to teach us the difference between right and wrong I'm thankful for this Romans chapter 2 13 through 16 tells us that God's law is actually even written on our heart That's why no matter where you live in the world If you kill someone, you know, you did wrong when Cain killed Abel He didn't have the Ten Commandments, but inside he knew he did wrong Why because the eternal God wrote his eternal truth on our eternal? Souls, that's what God did So if we're gonna grow in our faith Then we got to hear the word today and we got to hear the word and ingest the word and we got to say hey I'm gonna live out the word which means some things are gonna need to change. I got three points today. Here's the first one Respecting authority starts at home. This verse teaches us Doesn't address the government it addresses the father and mother Why because the first thing God ever ordained? was marriage That's why the enemy has come after marriage That's why the enemy has come after biblical marriages That's why the enemy has come after your marriage because marriage was the first and the first belongs to who to God the first thing God ever ordained was Marriage and so the enemy's been trying to tear it apart. And if you're in a good place, don't take your eyes off the road Sometimes we can be on a road trip and we just you ever just checked out mentally and you're just zoning then you're like I don't even remember passing that place Right. Don't check out in This area respecting authority starts at home strong communities are built by strong families
and so the enemy knows and there is an an ideology out there That the enemy is behind to destroy your family To destroy my family to destroy our future families It is not true It had taken us down a wrong way Any time we step away from God's Word we step away from God's will and we step away from God's way and So the enemy is coming after the home first, but then he's coming after our communities Strong families are strong because they're they have a strong daddy and a strong mama Not everyone does and if you're here today you're watching online and you're a single parent you are my hero Because you are impressive Because what you are doing is not easy and maybe you just exited out of divorce Are you headed through divorce or you're coming to divorce and it is a whole lot I just want to declare over you that where you have lack God will pick up the slack God is for you not against you And sometimes people walk away and sometimes people leave and and it hurts and it's hard But I want to tell you something that just means You didn't need them for your destiny God's not giving up on you. There's no X over you because it didn't work out the way you thought It would or it should are you with me? But where there is daddies and mamas under a home There's potential to have a strong family Where there's a single mama who fears the Lord there's potential there and there is fulfilled potential to have a strong family Family where there's a single dad and you're pulling the cart. You're picking up the weight You're under the burden and you still have joy. The joy of the Lord is your strength and there's a Incredible future for you. God has not abandoned you they may have but God did not and he never will You may be single but you're never alone For he promised I'll never leave you nor forsake you. I'll just feel God right now. I don't know who this is for but Respecting authority starts at home We are to teach our kids
to respect authority I watched a clip on Instagram yesterday of a college student at UCF who was pitching the biggest Temper tantrum. I would not have allowed if my kid was two years old You ever like on a plane? Right, are you ever in the grocery store? Maybe you're in Publix you're in Target and a kid a kid is just losing their ever-loving mind I'm not talking about like crying because they're hungry or crying because they're tired. I'm talking about Temper tantrum. How many know what I'm talking about? And Did you ever come to the realization? Did you ever think like I would if they were mine? If I just had them for five minutes, I'm pretty sure I could fix that but how are yours doing They Taught us in college just pause for effect How are yours doing? Authority respecting authority if little Johnny has a problem with the coach and his teacher and the principal and the lunch lady Little Johnny's the problem In fact, if you're constantly agreeing and saying that's right. Your principal's bad should have done that I mean we live in a day and age where it's popular To cancel authority God established authority So mom or dad if you're allowing little Johnny to walk around as a victim, you're the problem You are look in the mirror and just own it You're the limitation That's called losing and if you don't want your kid to be a loser then then quit Telling little Johnny it's everyone else's fault because you know, your third grader would never tell a lie You know, your middle schooler would get everything tell you all those parts of the story you with me The brain's not even fully developed till they're 21 So if they're under 21 or just arriving God is still developing Which means they're still processing So think about this real quick we live in a day and age like that college student who's pitching a tantrum and If you allow it
You're gonna have big problems What seems cute and funny when they're disobedient disrespectful when they're three is not cute and funny anymore when they're 13 Don't let them talk down to you Don't let them get away with disrespecting you like you better explain the standard and you better hold them to that standard Now we fix them to get into it if I had long sleeves I begin to roll it up on the left and the right Part of the problem of why we live in a society that doesn't like authority is because as parents we neglected Responsibility We gave tablets Instead of Ten Commandments We gave him a phone and if they're not on it 17 hours a day They're just gonna have a bad little attitude Well recently in our home. We had to do a little correction So let me just explain something. That's my phone Because I bought it and I pay for it and I'm privy to it anytime I want to read anything I want anytime I want and It would yeah, I'm clapping for that That's good preaching pastor right there And it it was a bad attitude is what it was and I just said I got to explain something to you, bro Let me tell you something cuz I ain't your bruh. I'm gonna tell you something, bro. Let me tell you something Let me let me tell you something You're losing that phone until I see a difference and then maybe it's gonna take a little longer than that Because your attitude is so off you don't done lost your ever-loving mind And I'm getting to that shall not murder, but I'm real Said is it's a privilege to have that phone. It's not a right That phone is not a right it's a privilege and you confused it you get upset cuz you know no no no no no We got a reel them back in that's our fault You with me when we're allowing YouTube to raise them And we're wondering how in the world did we get Here we got here because we allowed screens. We allowed commercials to parent so we could be free and do the things Mmm, it's it's convicting. I know
I'm not being ugly. I'm you know, I'm just being honest We can listen if you got young kids. Listen, don't give them a phone too early If you don't know what too early is come talk to me Don't give it to him what they're in fifth grade and putting fifth grade just got a phone Well you put in the whole world in there So We got to reel it back in We got a parent what happens is sometimes we neglected when they're younger So we got to go back and do it and the best way to do it is to model it because kids There's some things that are taught but there's some things that are caught Like humility because it's not just a kids. It's not I am against you kids I love our students being the I told them this the night I preached I said my coach He's a wonderful guy, but he told me you need to stop going to the camps He said you got bigger fish to fry and I said, I love you and you're awesome, but I totally disagree with you They are the fish They're not generation next their generation now the best thing I can do is go to camp with our students That's the best use of my time Because the Bible says they're arrows and we are aiming them and we are getting ready to launch them Which means sometimes we got to pull them back and they don't like the restriction They don't like they're the arrows going further away from where they think the target is but no, no, no, no, no We're gonna raise you to release you and it's it's easier to raise a boy to a man than it is To make a man out of a man who's still a boy And so What I want us to know is it's our responsibility to teach them To respect authority at our house. You don't say yeah, you don't say yep You say hey brah, you know say my old man My old woman by the way dad if that's how you talk about your wife Quit it and be better and be bigger than that. She ain't your old woman And when those kids we shouldn't say that's my old man, that's my no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no honor
We're gonna honor We're gonna honor. How are we doing so far? We having fun Got to teach him if you don't teach them responsibility, they'll become a victim the rest of their life they'll blame everyone for everything and they will never measure up to Who God called them to be and created them to be sometimes you got to call them out to call them up I had a staff member once we call we around a table. They stepped off the wrong way and it was my privilege To call them out and I called him out He's like, well your problem is you call you should be calling us up and not calling us out I said, well, that's your problem because you don't understand for someone to get up. Sometimes they got to be called out and If I'm the coach you're part of the team. I'm gonna call you out because you're off right now So leave enter the room better Bigger sometimes we got to do that with our kids. We got to correct them. I just want to be their friend pastor Tim I want to be their friend. I just I feel I got this mom guilt. I got this dad guilt I just want them to like me That's how you raise losers. I Told you this one was gonna sting I told you this one was gonna sting but it's good for you. It's good for me It's good for us. You cannot let Johnny and Susie do whatever they want. Johnny and Susie don't have a clue You with me we're to raise them an arrow doesn't launch itself hopefully a warrior does So we got to raise them in the way they should go and when they're old they won't depart from it Which means implication they will depart from it. But here's the promise when they get old they'll come back to it So if they've departed from it just start declaring the Word of God that they're gonna come back to it. I'm not talking about Being mean to your kid, I'm not talking about that and I believe with all my heart like we should be fun But we shouldn't be afraid to correct and we certainly shouldn't be afraid to discipline so you do that wrong I'm calling you out I'm not telling you if you don't come here. I'm telling you one more time I'm Tom don't make me call you one more time. Tell you come over here if you okay, come here one more time All right, no, no, no, no, no, you shouldn't yourself in the foot aren't you tired of that? Like like like no, here's the standard. It's called respect. Here's the standard. It's called honor. Here's the standard. It's called obedience I want to teach you what obedience is. This is from my dad You know you ever hear things your parents like, you know, and you're like, I'll never I Got sick and tired of hearing that I'll never say that and then you're like listen here
I got something to tell you if you pass it on Here's what obedience is write this down if you don't have kids But you will you want to write it down if you're a kid you want to write it down if you got grandkids write it Down obedience is one doing what I'm told to do to when I'm told to do it So if you tell them to clean the room, they don't clean their room You're like hey, I need you to or hey Come on out and help me get the groceries out of the car and they come 15 minutes later And they're like what what bruh? Oh like you already got it like that one obedience We got an issue because you missed the standard So doing what you're told to do when you're told to do it here. It is. Here's a good one with the right heart attitude So if they do it, they got a bad attitude. It's not obedience it definitely is not honor and you can obey without honoring, but you can never honor without obeying and Grace calls us up Grace doesn't take weight off grace actually puts more weight on so number one We got to understand that respecting authority it starts at home. There's a verse here and It says give respect and honor to those who are in authority number two God demands that we honor our parents Exodus 2012 honor your father mother Ephesians 6 1 children obey the word children there means dependent or offspring It doesn't mean don't think little boy little girl. It means if mom and dad still paying for anything You're dependent and it means you are to obey them. Why because you belong to the Lord and It is the right thing to do what is honor comes from the Hebrew word Hadar It means literally to esteem or regard highly It means to decorate or to ornament like a Christmas tree with no decorations is a Christmas tree But it's not a Christmas tree. So is a parent without honor from their children. They're a parent, but they're not a parent Because they ought to look totally different because you as a college student You as a 21 year old you as a middle school student you as a young elementary student You are constantly honoring them. That means that you obey them. You listen to them. You care for them You adorn them you you you appreciate them
I'm telling you. I'll just be honest. I had no clue when Steph and I got married that parents stayed behind Now I've been doing weddings for 27 years and the mom and dads they stay after they've been gone for months and months and months And here they are working down to the bone and I just want to take the bride. I just want to take the groom I don't want to say go hug your parents And there was all this stress because like they don't understand it this and that but you don't understand there's a whole lot to be and being a parent and Unfortunately honest truth it took me a Little later than I wish To show as much appreciation as they deserve. I showed appreciation. I wish I would have doubled or tripled it To honor means that we're gonna demonstrate respect for them So in other words if you have a friend over and your parents have a rule and it's like hey We don't drink Cokes upstairs. We don't take drinks upstairs or the dog doesn't go upstairs or whatever. You got friends over it You don't allow your friends to dishonor your parents because you're too busy honoring them. You don't got time for anyone dishonoring them That's a good place to say come on preacher right there. Come on. It means I speak well of them. Whoo Let's park here for a minute. It means I don't talk bad about him. I don't talk bad about him. I don't Call them names. I don't dishonor them with my friends when I'm around. I don't make fun of them We live in a culture where commercials and even movies they're constantly making parents look stupid. What's the insurance commercial? Don't be like your parents and it's teaching parents are dumb and And it's funny, but the devil gets you laughing at something Just because it gets you laughing doesn't mean it's right You watch movies and some shows and you watch and like the dad's always the idiot. Who do you think behind that Jesus? No That's the enemy trying to take away your authority So if respecting authority starts at the home and it starts with us teaching our children They are to honor their father and their mother dads. You're the leader You're the spiritual leader If you're not doing a great job fire yourself rehire yourself and come back and do the job you should be doing Walk out of the room fire yourself Give your own self the business then walk back in and say baby. You got a new husband kids
You got a new dad. You don't say what Joshua said unless you are really convinced and your character is Screaming out that, hey, as for me and my house, I don't think Joshua was like, my house. I think Joshua was saying, this is my responsibility. This is my responsibility. The weight of this, this is on me as the man. And fathers, you're like, well, I would lead, but she won't let me. Women let them. God didn't call you to be, if you're married, God didn't call you to be the spiritual leader of the home. That's the man's job, to lead, to set the tone. But then the wife says, well, he won't do it. Pray for him. Pray for him, encourage him, love him, and watch God lead him. But husbands, it's our job to be the spiritual leader of the home. We are to provide, soft part of the hand, we to protect, rough part of the hand, like God made you to be tough and to be tender. I think one of the greatest things a father can do is be tender. It's a form, it's a picture of meekness. It's strength under control, like riding this beautiful, massive, strong horse. You get on there and the horse listens and obeys. That horse could throw you off anytime it wanted to. It could run you into a tree anytime it wanted to,
but it is under authority. It's got a bridle in its mouth. It's got reins. It listens to you. And so we're to, fathers, not to lead our children, Ephesians 6, 4, don't lead them to where they respond. They have no other choice than just to be angry and lash out. We're not to provoke them to anger, the Bible says. We're to be tender with them and lead them. Show them what real strength is. And I would say to fathers, don't forget, you may be 6'2", they're not. You know you love them in here, but when they just see what's on here, they don't feel like you love them in here. You with me? And it's so easy to do. And I don't want this to be a shame on you message. It'd be a shame off of us message. And we can just be better. We can do it different. And here's the thing, dads. The greatest thing you can do to earn respect is give respect. So where you mess up, you fess up. One of the best days of my life is where I sat in the floor with one of my sons and said, I was wrong. I am sorry, please forgive me. I did this.
I shouldn't have done that. Please forgive me. I just modeled for him what it looks like to be a man, to take responsibility. And so you can't talk to your wife, you can't talk to your husband with disrespect and expect you're gonna have kids that are gonna respect you because you're teaching them not to respect. It's quiet. It's hard, but it's true. I can't disrespect my wife and then get onto my child because they don't respect me. I'm teaching them how not to behave. Moms, if you don't respect your husband, good luck. If you talk about him and you kind of got a joke with the kids and you kind of always doing this, making dad, you know, kind of dumbing down dad, good luck. Because you're gonna mess them up. Don't do that. You're to honor. See, honor's for all of us. And here it says we're to honor our parents. And it's talking about if you're dependent. But what about those of us that have parents that are older? We can still honor. I don't have to obey my dad. But I can honor my dad in a way that I say, dad, would you speak into my life here?
I think it's a crying shame if you're a grandparent and you're walking on eggshells because you don't want your kids to get mad at you. Because if you accidentally say something, I think there are boundaries. And I think, man, if you got someone that's manipulative, that is a whole nother story. But I think if you have young kids, look at me. If you have parents that are good parents or great parents, invite them to speak into your parenting because they can see what you can't see. You can't see it because you're right here. The baby's, wah! You're right there. You can't see it because you're right here. Feed me! And they're 13. You can't see because it, take me here. You're right there. You're so close to it, you can't, you don't have the perspective. And by the way, we learn from failure, not just success. Failure can be a great teacher if we learn from it. And when you invite, you're honoring. When you invite, hey, would you speak in? I'm really struggling here. I just like, oh, I love them, but I sometimes I could just, you speak in and maybe they snicker because maybe you're reaping what you sowed. I know my parents, when they moved here
and Gavin was little, Gavin was just like a Tasmanian devil, he was all over the place. Energy, energy, energy, loud, loud, loud. And I remember Mama Judy just being like, that's how you were. That's how you were. Me? Right? But here's the deal. For those of us, maybe we wish we could go back and have a mulligan and do it better. As long as you're breathing, you can start right now and you can train and you can teach them to honor their parents. I'm almost through. If you just bear with me just for a few, got a little more to say. The Bible teaches us to honor God, Christ, parents, older people, all in authority. The Bible says, Romans 13. If we're talking bad about the mayor, we're talking bad about the principal, we're talking bad about the president. Well, I didn't vote for him. I'm not blue. I'm not red. The Bible doesn't ask for your opinion. The Bible just tells you, you are to honor all those in authority. And by the way, none of us are perfect and you might not do better. It's easy to criticize what you don't feel. It's easy to criticize what you don't carry. It's just good for all of us. We ought to honor church leaders. The Bible says pastors are worthy of double honor. Honor, we honor up, we honor down, we honor all around.
Fathers honor your wife, fathers honor your children. And so many of you do. Going to camp, being with our kids, they're amazing kids. We provide, how many scholarships, Pastor Steven, 27, 27 scholarships to help kids. I had a kid, a freshman, I believe, this year. Talked to him on the phone. He had called the church. Because we're a tithing church, we were able to say, hey, we got your camp. Come on. He just came up. I wish I could be able to come. I wish I could come, Pastor Tim. I'm going to pay for you to come to this weekend, rise up. Come on. Like, we are blessed to be a blessing. We're blessed to be a blessing. If the father is the headhold, the mother is the bond, you keep us together. You're the glue, women. You're not less than. You're not less than. Oh, we pray for him. Mama doesn't get sick. Daddy gets sick. I'm dying. Oh God, I'm hurt. Oh, I think I need a ... Yeah, you know that sourdough bread, maybe some of that can help me feel ... You know, but Mama gets sick and she still washes clothes. She still makes sure the floors are vacuumed, right? Mama still shows up. Women, am I telling the truth?
And I'm not ... That was strong. And I'm not saying dads, we don't, but if you're like me, Mama goes and gets sick. That's when I begin to realize ... Mama goes out of town is when I begin to realize how much Mama does. How many are thankful for your Mama? If you're breathing and if your Mama's breathing, you ought to just thank her one more time. If your father's breathing and you're breathing, you ought to thank him one more time. Well, they weren't perfect and neither are you and neither am I. And you know, we raise our kids, we tell them what to do, but then our kids become our judges. And so we want to do it well and do it right the first time. What's the first commandment with promise? It says, we'll live a long, full, blessed life. I love it. Let's get a prop here real quick. The Bible compares the word of God, it says it's sweeter than honey. So when you don't allow Johnny to act the way Johnny wants to act, because Johnny is in his feelings, and don't just ... Help your kids understand feelings are not always facts. We don't like ... It's not that we don't ever let them express their feelings, but there's a right way and a wrong way to do it, right? Like little Johnny shouldn't be able to get his screen, whatever he wants to screen, for 10 seconds or 10 minutes. The Bible's sweeter than honey. So when you get in the word and the word gets in you and you begin to teach your kids the word, you get the privilege of tasting the benefits of the word. It's sweet. It's like, man, our marriage is better. Our finances are better. Our parenting is better. Our kids are better. And live a long life.
The Hebrew picture is extension. So children, obey your parents and the Lord for this is right. Honor your father and mother that it will go well with you. You'll live a long life. It means to literally draw out. It means to draw out. Like we get to decide in a way like how long and how full our life really is. So if you messed up and you only gave your parents this much honor, go back and apologize. Say I'm sorry. I can't redo my teenage years, but the rest of my days will be the best of your days because I'm going to honor you. It's to draw out. It's to lengthen. I like in the Hebrew, one of the definitions is to postpone. To postpone. I remember when my papa was on what we thought was his deathbed. He was deathly sick and he's in the hospital for weeks and then he got pneumonia. And I remember, and I remember my parents trying to give us. aha moment, like he may be going with Jesus pretty soon. And I remember my Papa, he's the best man in my wedding. Dad officiated it, Papa stood beside me, we wore the same tuxes, it was on point, it was sweet. He's the best man, I love Papa, his picture's on my desk right down the office here. Papa got sick and I remember laying a hand on him and praying, and I was praying over him, I began weeping and saying, God, please multiply his days. I don't know if it was late 70s, early 80s, but you know what, he died when he's 90, 91.
God postponed his death. God honored my prayer, but Papa was the answer to his own prayer request. He lived 90 because he honored his parents, so his life was lengthened, drawn out, and his death was postponed. And so a great picture is every time, young people, you dishonor, there's a lot of hashes on this, a lot of marks. It's not like, hey, you dishonor one time, and God's like, there goes 20 years. Aren't you thankful God is merciful? I'm thankful for that. But let me tell you something, the truth is, it's a positive and a negative every time we dishonor. You just kinda, little less of a blessed life. Little less of a long life. I don't know about you guys, but man, I wanna live a long, full, blessed life. The Bible commands it. Lastly, honor boomerangs. So there's something called honor's reward. There's a reward for honoring the boomerangs. I got this in Tampa, brought some props today, having the kids in the gatherings. Honor boomerangs, you know? This was at the Outback Bowl. Went to the bowl game, we won. Brought the little boomerang. Remember the hype of that game and the fun of that game?
Now, if I get this angle right, this is supposed to come back. But I'm not gonna do it. But some of you have kids and it's not coming back, and you're wondering why it's not coming back. It's because you never released it. But here's the good news. You can do it now. You can start today and boomerang back, baby, because honor comes with honor's reward. If you own a business, you're the CEO, you're the CFO, honor people. Don't just honor up. Let's honor down, around. Everyone made in the image of God deserves honor. And God says here, honor your parents. Why? Because it's right and it pleases the Lord. So you cannot please the Lord or obey the Lord if you're not even showing honor, respect, and obedience to your parents. You gotta start there. In other words, there's some pre-request that God's not gonna answer until you get the honor game upped. And I just believe, I close with this, but I believe that there are people here and we just need to confess it. I think there's some dads need to say, hey, family, let's go to the altar.
You know what? I'm gonna call my own foul. And you look at the family and say, you know what? I've not had a great attitude. You know what? I've not been a spiritual leader. I've just been going through the motions. Life is hard. Be careful, young people, not to judge because one day you'll be older and realize the weight that your parents carried. But maybe there's some families. Maybe you're a single mom. You need to get your kid, your child, your kids down here. You need to hit your knees. You need to pray together. God, hey, first off, thank you. Thank you for the parents that I had. I may be going through this tough time. Thank you for the kids I have. Thank you. The Bible says in Proverbs 22, six, I quoted it earlier, train up a child in the way they should go. And when they're old, they will not depart from it. The Hebrew women, whether the moms or the midwives, they would take a salve. They would take the salve. It's the honeycomb in there. They'd take the salve.
They would put it on the roof of the baby's mouth. They'd put it, they'd coat the baby's top with the salve. That baby would begin to suck. They were creating a desire in that baby to be fed. And when it says train up a child, the picture there from this beautiful Hebrew language is that the way that we raise up. The way that we guide, the way that we direct, the way that we train up our children is to be creating a desire for God in them so that they have a desire for more. They have a desire to be fed from the bread of life. That's what we're supposed to do. So watch, if you missed the mark, you're not hitting the mark. You can't remember last time you hit the mark. It's not a shame on you. You're horrible. We've got enough guilt. Get rid of all the guilt. Receive all the grace. Know you can't do it without him and ask him for help every day. God, give me the help I need. Give me the wisdom I need. Give me the strength I need to raise my kids to be warriors for your kingdom so that your kingdom will come on earth as it is heaven. How does that happen? Well, we realize that respecting authority starts at home, that God demands honor, and that honor actually boomerangs right back. Let's pray. How many of you guys, this was a loaded message. If you think it was long, me delivering it, I feel you. It was very long, me receiving it, about 15 hours yesterday, and then some. I think God really has something to say for us. How many of you would say, like, Pastor Tim, yeah, some things need to change. God spoke to me today. If that's you, just raise your hand. Would you all over? I love that. It's beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. So proud of you. God bless you. How many young people here say, I need to make some things right with mom and dad? Raise your hand. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. How many parents say, you know what, I'm going to lead the way. I got some things to make right with my kids. God bless you. God bless you. Shame off you, grace on you, multiplied. If you're here today and you're not a Christian, you don't have to believe that way. Jesus paid it all. Every sin you ever committed or omitted, He paid for it all. He shed His blood on the cross, the perfect sacrifice, the only thing that could cleanse our sin, that could take away the stench of our sin, was the blood of Jesus. He laid His perfect life down. He became completely imperfect. The Holy One became completely unholy. He absorbed the sin of the world, which means He would receive the judgment of God
for the wages of sin is death and Jesus paid it all. But He did that so you and I could embrace the weight of all of God's forgiveness, all of God's grace, all of God's mercy. Thank you, Jesus, all of God's love. And you don't get to heaven by being gooder, better, try harder. You realize you can't do it. Only Jesus could and He did. And so you receive the gift of God, which is Christ Jesus. You just received the gift. He died, was buried, was buried, rose again. He did it for you so that death didn't get the final victory. And if you need that today, if you'll confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, believe in your heart, God raised Him from the dead, you'll be saved. Let's pray together. And again, not just saying these words, but you confessing your heart to God, we could use words like this. Would you pray with me? Would you say, Jesus, I confess to you that I'm a sinner and I desperately need you to be my Savior. Thank you for loving me and bleeding for me and dying for me. I believe you rose again, defeating death. You did it for me. And I say, thank you. I give you my life and I now receive your life. Please teach me how to live in Jesus name. Amen. Would you stand to your feet? If you just prayed that prayer for the first time, or maybe you've been wrestling with, I don't know if I'm a Christian or not. I don't know if, if I really meant it then, or if I did it because someone else did it or peer pressure. I don't know. And, but you prayed it today and you can say to the enemy, I'm not guessing anymore. It's done. So, if you prayed for the first time or you prayed it like that time, I want you to put your hands in the air on the count of three, hold up high. This is not to shame on you. This is to celebrate you, man. Like this is the best thing ever happened in your world and we're here for it. We got you. Hold it up on the count of three. Would you? One, two, three. Hold it up. God bless you. I see you. God bless you.
I see you. Come on. God bless you. I see you. Come on. Come on. Let's go. Come on, church. Keep it up. Hold it up. Let us get you a bag. Come on. I love the hands. Hands. God bless you.
