There is a gap between preparing for the future vs your ability to control the future. How do we fill that gap and position ourselves between God’s goodness and God’s control? Whether you’re 25 or 75, your worries about your career, relationships, families, and/or health, anxiety always follows the same pattern. It is real but then it grows into a tiny core belief that drives our way of thinking. Anxiety expands to the size of our thoughts while faith expands to the size of our prayers. You talk to yourself about your anxiety. You talk to your friends about your anxiety. Have you tried talking to God?

peace in this anxious world. It is expected to be cut in half. According to multiple aviation experts, the split second law schools are closed. The power is on. Fun fact about zebras, they do not get ulcers, which is stunning because their life is in danger every single day. How can they not be worried about that? Well, there's a book by the title of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers that explains. They're out on the Serengeti just kind of doing their thing, eating grass, grazing. And along comes a lion and their limbic systems go into shock. They've got adrenaline flowing through them. And they should be terrified because a lion can run faster than a zebra. But only for about ten seconds. So as long as they get a little head start, they're okay. So they run away from the lion and the lion gets tired and sleeps under a tree. You know what the zebra does? Goes back to grazing as if nothing had happened. You don't do that. You know why? Because you have a better imagination than a zebra. A zebra experiences fear. We experience anxiety. And here's the difference. Fear sees. Anxiety imagines.
And some of y'all got a great imagination. Like you're just blowing things way up. And you know it's true. And actually, Ashley said this last week, that anxiety is a spiritual problem. It absolutely is. And here's why. No other animal has the ability that God gave us to imagine a future. So it's kind of a spiritual gift. And when you have a spiritual gift, that is powerful. And if you use the gift in the right way, man, it's powerful to imagine a future and to work towards that future. But when it works against you, it's equally powerful. And that's why we're struggling with anxiety. It is spiritual. But do not hear me say that if you have anxiety, you are unspiritual. In fact, it's the opposite. If you have anxiety, it's because you are very spiritual and you're imagining this future. Which could be a good thing. But again, it can work against you. So what do we do with this anxiety that we have? The answer is we get help. And I just want to say, if you need help, get the help you need. It is not unspiritual to use medication if it's prescribed by a doctor for anxiety. It's part of what God gave you.
in this world. It's not unspiritual to go see a therapist. For you to get the help you need doesn't mean you're less spiritual than the person sitting next to you. For God's sake, for our sake, get the help you need. But that doesn't diminish that this is a spiritual problem that might just have a more powerful spiritual solution. In fact, I think God gave us a tool 2,000 years ago that is just as valuable to reduce anxiety in our day. Look, we all experience it. I've experienced anxiety as well. Now, you'll know if I am experiencing anxiety if you ever get an email from me at two in the morning. You too? For me, and I don't want to brag, I sleep about as good as anybody I know. Eight hours a night, I'm just horizontal and out. But if I can't sleep, and this has happened to me twice in my life, I could not sleep. This was an issue of anxiety for me. For some of you, it will present in your body in a different way, like your palms will get sweaty. Or maybe someone right now, your heart is beating so hard that you're convinced the person next to you can feel it. For some of you, you've had a headache for like three months. For some of you, right now, you're clenching your teeth because of anxiety in your body, and your body is keeping score of the anxiety that you're allowing to hold onto your life.
This is a human problem, and it's a problem that we're facing, and Ashley last week, when he kicked off the series for us, he identified two pillars, do you remember that? On the one hand, you've got the goodness of God. On the other hand, you've got the control of God. And if we can stand between those two pillars, recognizing that God is good, and if God is good, then we can release the future to him. But rather, we try to control it. There's two things we try to control, and we can't control either one of them, other people and the future. And I know why we try to control the future, because we're trying to, well, do what we think God might not do for us. So what do we do when we experience this? 100% of your anxiety, 100% of your anxiety, is about a future that you're imagining that you can't control. Now, I'm not saying you don't have any agency, you do. You have, there's some responsibilities and some abilities that you have. For example, you have the ability and responsibility to discipline your children, but that won't secure your future. It wouldn't guarantee the future. You have the ability and responsibility to manage your finances, but that doesn't mean you won't lose your job.
You have the ability and responsibility to eat right and rest well, but that doesn't guarantee you won't get a disease. We cannot control the future, but God can. And our stress, our anxiety really foments between our ability and control, because we've done what we can, but we still can't control. And in that space, we just allow it to grow and fester. But the solution, Ashley's right, is to stand between the pillars of God's goodness and God's control. Big question, how? And that's what I wanna talk about. How can you practically, this is gonna be a very practical message, how can you practically stand between those two pillars to manage well your anxiety? So I'm gonna do two things. First, I'm gonna talk about cognitive behavioral therapy. If you go to a therapist, this is what they're gonna do. I'm gonna go through the four questions that they ask. I'm not even gonna charge you, it's free. You're welcome. And then after we talk about how God wired your brain, I wanna talk about the solution that God gave to you 2,000 years ago that I promise you will work for you today. So let's start with the architecture of anxiety. What's really going on with anxiety?
Cognitive behavioral therapists will tell you you need to ask four questions. Number one, what's going on? For you, what's going on might deal with your job, like a job you think you might lose. You're imagining this future. It might be an ex that's giving you problems or someone you're with that is soon to be an ex because you're giving them problems. It could be a child that, man, they're making these. These decisions, that is not the way I raised them and I don't know where they got that. So we spin it out of control. Here's what's gonna happen in the future. I am going to, as a test case, I'm gonna make this up. So this is not real. This is a situation I'm imagining. If this happens to be exactly your situation, I promise you I did not eavesdrop in your living room. We don't have spies that go out and check you out. But imagine this scenario where you have a nine-year-old child who gets in a fight at school. I mean, they punched another kid in the face. That's a problem. But that's not where your anxiety comes from. How do I know? Because anxiety comes from the future, not the present. Fear is what happens in the present. Anxiety is what happens with an imagined future.
So this is already past. You got in a fight, punched a kid. This is not what you're anxious about. You have to dig beneath the surface to get to the thing beneath the thing. And you have to ask a second question. What am I afraid of? You can describe the situation, but what are you actually afraid of? It's not that your kid got in a fight. It's that your child might be suspended. Well, why does that bother you? Well, because if they're suspended, then the thing beneath the thing, they might get rejected by the other kids in the class. So this is what's going on. This is what you're afraid of. But to get to the thing beneath the thing, you have to ask a third question. Why am I afraid of this? And as you excavate your fear, inside, you're concerned that your child will be labeled. Well, why is that a problem? Because the label can actually follow my child throughout their elementary school and high school days. So why is that a problem? Well, because if it follows my child through high school, they might go to prison someday. I mean, it's this antisocial brute, okay? Why is that a problem?
Well, if you excavate even further, it's because they could become a bully. And maybe they don't go to prison, but they actually, it's worse, they bully their wife and their children. Now, so far, we've looked at what's going on. And then we've asked, what are you afraid of? We've excavated that fear to say, why are you afraid of that? But you will never get to the root of your anxiety until you ask this final question. What does this say about you? What does this say about you? If your kid is a bully. Well, what it might say about you is that you failed as a parent. Because the kid got in a fight. Why is that a problem? What is that really saying about you? That you failed as a parent? Come on. No, it's actually saying that you have offloaded your trauma to your child. Well, why is that a big deal? Because I'm going to die alone in an institution. Now, as you back out of this and take a look at what you're really doing, when you do the hard work to ask those four questions, this is ridiculous. You know it's ridiculous.
Like, you're not gonna die alone in an institution because your kid gets in a fight at school. But our imaginations make things bigger and bigger. You know why? Because we keep feeding that fear. We are giving oxygen to our anxiety. How do we do that? By having the same conversations over and over and over again in our head. I don't think I'm the only one that does this because I've seen you. You drive in your car and you're having an argument but no one else is in the car. I love those arguments. I win all of them. I hate those arguments because I lose every time. Because I just keep feeding this anxiety with this Rolodex of worry. What if, instead of talking to yourself about your problems or talking to your friends about your problems or talking to your neighbor about your problem, talking to your family about the problem, have you ever thought that you could talk to God about your problem? Because then, instead of giving oxygen to your anxiety, you would be giving oxygen to your faith. and building up your faith, just pumping air into it. Look, you can't stop thinking negative thoughts. Like, I can tell you right now, do not, whatever you do, don't think about a pink elephant.
No, too late. You can't unthink a thought, you can't stop thinking a thought, but you can crowd out a thought by replacing it with other positive thoughts. Here's just a spiritual rule. Anxiety expands to the size of our thoughts, and your faith expands to the size of your prayers. So what I wanna do is just ask this simple question. And honestly, this is the whole sermon in a single sentence. How can I shape my prayers to lower my anxiety? And you absolutely can. I wanna show you how. And going back to our text, like this is the same passage we've been reading the entire series. We're gonna read it every week of the series. And I just wanna ask you, out of respect for God's word, whether you're watching online or on campus, would you stand and read this with me? Philippians chapter four, beginning in verse four. It says, rejoice in the Lord always. I'll say it again, rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all, the Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true,
whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things. The word of the Lord. You may be seated. I wanna zero in on just verse six. It says, do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. This is a fascinating verse. There are, throughout the whole New Testament, seven different words for prayer. Four of them are in this one verse. One of them is so important, this word thanksgiving. It is such a kryptonite for anxiety that we're gonna spend a whole message on this next week. But right now, I just wanna focus on these three other words for prayer. This first one, prayer. It simply means to have a conversation with God. Now, if you're new to church or maybe you haven't, like no one's ever taught you how to pray, don't overthink it. It's a simple conversation, like you'd have at a dinner table with someone. And what is the appropriate posture for prayer? Now, I grew up hearing every head bowed and every eye closed. Jews did not pray like that. Here is the Jewish posture for prayer,
with your eyes uplifted and your hands outstretched, because it's like a conversation. And if I was talking to you across a table, my eyes would be on you, my hands would be moving. Just do that with God. God, this is what's going on in my life. Just talk to him about your anxiety. You've talked to your friends about your anxiety. You've talked to yourself about your anxiety. You've talked to your neighbor about your anxiety. Why not talk to God and see if that helps? Now, if you're moving from just a conversation to an actual petition, it's a different posture. The second word for prayer, petition, is deeper. And the posture for petition is not standing with your hands outstretched. You're going before a king and asking for a favor. How would you go before a king? Now you fold your hands, and you're saying, your majesty, please, you have the resources to help me. Please, I need your help. What about the request? I know it sounds like the request is less heavy than a petition, a petition. The request is actually heavier by far, because this word indicates a crisis in your life. Something is happening, and you have no control. Something is happening, and you have no control. It is an emergency. What is the appropriate posture for this kind of prayer?
Well, you are there right now, because what you're going through is so heavy, and you can't control it, and you can't control him. And you're just coming to God and saying, God, I need you. That's actually a good place to be, because when you're on your face before the Lord, you have wiped out the illusion that you have any control over people or the future. And now, you can really pray to God. And I got to thinking about this. You've got three different words for prayer in one verse. And I thought, what if I gave you three different methods of praying that might fit you personally? So I'm actually gonna give you five. I'm gonna talk about three, and then we're gonna do two. So five prayers. I know some of you are going, I'm gonna do, I need to do, I'm gonna do all five. Stop it. Just one. Just find the one that speaks to your soul, or allows you to speak from your soul to God. So here are the first three. The first idea for prayer is write a letter to God. I know that sounds weird, because I know God reads, but write a letter? Yes, and there's a biblical model for doing that. Back in the Old Testament, there was a king by the name of Hezekiah.
He was the king of Jerusalem over all of Israel, and the city was surrounded by an enemy called Sennacherib. We actually know what Sennacherib looks like, because archeologists have found this carving of him. He was a mean, nasty man. And he had his army surrounding Jerusalem. We actually know what the armies look like, too, because they were carved into stone. Man, they were brutal. And Sennacherib wrote a letter to Hezekiah, and basically it said, I'm gonna huff and puff and blow your house down. But Hezekiah, I mean, the things that he said in this letter were just brutal. And Hezekiah took the letter into the temple, laid it before God, and said, God, have you read this? I think that's actually a really healthy model. If you are a verbal processor, it might be helpful for you to write in detail everything that is concerning your heart, what you're anxious about, and give it to God. Just lay it before him. But listen to how Hezekiah begins his prayer. If you were the king, and your city was surrounded, and there's no way you can win. Their troops are way bigger, way badder than yours. You cannot win. How does your prayer begin? Mine? I am running to my prayer closet.
About 10 yards out, I'm skidding on my knees and just crying, help! That's not how his prayer begins. Listen, Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God. Over all the kingdoms of the earth, you have made heaven and earth. That's weird. Like, you're in trouble, bro, and all you can do is like, you know, praise God? Yes, here's why. Because until you put God on the throne, you don't know how to ask for what you actually need. And if you write a letter to God, begin with lavish praise, tell God everything about Him that you know, and only then get into the details as you excavate your anxiety. Begin with a different identification of what's going on here. What's going on here is God is on His throne. What's going on here is He made the heaven and the earth. What's going on here is He's chosen us as His people. That's what's going on. And when you get down to that, then you lay out your problem in a very different light. Hezekiah goes on. Give ear, Lord, and hear. Open your eyes, Lord, and see. Listen to all the words Sennacherib has sent
to ridicule the living God. It's true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands. They've thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods, but only wood and stone fashioned by human hands. And then he gets down to the request. Here's his request. Now, Lord, our God, deliver us from his hand, so that, pause. What do you think his so that is? Because my so that is, God, I need you to rescue me, so that my enemy can like take. Get on the chin. Or my so that is, I'm concerned about my kids, would you do something to help my kids survive? Or my so that is, God, would you just help me be happy again? Could I ever smile and laugh freely again? That's my so that. Because I haven't put him on the throne. But you put God on the throne, that will change your so that. So that all the kingdoms on earth may know that you, Lord, are the only God. When we recognize who God actually is, we ask differently. Because we recognize that what we're going through, God can get us through. Not merely for our own personal happiness,
but God can get you through what you're going through so that his name can be glorified. You know this is true. That some of the greatest glory you give to God is through the deepest valleys that you've walked through. And maybe God has something in store that's bigger still than you could ever imagine in your anxiety. So that's prayer number one. That you would write a letter to God. Here's prayer number two. Because some of you are, like you're not verbal processors, you are more active. You might need to take a walk. Take a prayer walk. And here's the way it works. As you're walking, some of you get in your steps anyway, so you're already doing this. Walking around the block, let every landmark represent a piece of your anxiety. So start with your next door neighbor. Their house is gonna represent the situation you're in. And as you walk by their house, tell God, this is all the details of the situation. Here's what's going on. And then you leave it behind. As you just walk to the next house. And maybe it's a park that you go by next, and you detail, not what's going on, but what are you afraid of?
Tell God, I'm afraid of this and this and this. Like you could go by a playground and every piece of equipment could be another fear that you have. God, this is what I'm afraid of, this is what I'm afraid of, this is what I'm afraid of. And then as you leave, leave it behind. And then excavate further. Why am I afraid of that? This could be a saguaro cactus. This could be somebody's garage. This could be a, I don't know, anything that's in your neighborhood, maybe a gas station or a grocery store. And you say, that is going to represent why I'm afraid of what I'm afraid of. And just tell God in detail after detail, this is why I'm afraid of it. Excavate your fear until you finally get to you. What does this say about you? And get real honest with God. This is what I think this is saying about me. Now as you walk by these landmarks, the beauty of it is you could just like lay it out there and then say, God, I'm gonna leave it alone. I'm gonna let it go, I'm gonna walk away. Now you know you're gonna pick it back up, but that's okay, because you can take this walk again tomorrow. But for today, today,
could you just let it go for 24 hours? Could you leave your fear in God's hands just for 24 hours? Some of you need to take a walk around the block. Some of you need to walk to Flagstaff. But as you pass these landmarks, just let it go for 24 hours and what you'll find is the more laps you take, the quicker you can walk away, and the longer you can leave it in the hands of God. That's prayer number two. Here's prayer number three. Meditate. I know that's kind of weird for some people because it's like Eastern meditation. We kind of feel odd about that. But did you know that meditate is biblical? Comes straight out of the Bible. Here's the difference between biblical meditation and Eastern meditation. Eastern meditation says empty your mind. Biblical meditation says fill your mind with the thoughts of God. So I'm gonna give you a strategy. Using a Bible passage, and we're just gonna practice this with the Bible passage we're in right now, Philippians chapter four, verse four. It says, rejoice in the Lord always. Okay, that's what it says. Here's what you say.
This is your mantra. I will rejoice in you, Lord, always. I will rejoice in you, Lord, always. I will rejoice in you, Lord, always. I will rejoice in you, Lord, always. How many times do you need to say it? One more time. Then you've spoken your anxiety. If you've rolodexed your anxiety 1,000 times, then you need 1,001. If you've rolodexed your anxiety 10,000 times, you need 10,001. The following verse says, the Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything. Here's your mantra. Lord, you are near. I will not be anxious about anything. Lord, you're near. I will not be anxious about anything. How many times do you need to repeat it until you believe it? The following verse says, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. God, your peace guards my heart and mind. My suggestion, if you're gonna take this away,
if this is your one, start with Romans chapter eight because there are declarations about you. You are loved. You are resilient. You are powerful. You are chosen. You are protected. You are blessed. And the more you can believe about you, how God believes about you, the more you will be able to declare the goodness of God and release control to God. Those are the three prayers that are portable. So get your doggie bag, put one of them in, take it home. I'm gonna do one with you right now because we take things that are so little and we make them so big. And God actually does the opposite. He takes things that are huge and he makes them portable. Like you can put it in your hand. This is a world of peace in a little cup. This is a mountain of mercy right in a little wafer. This is an ocean of love in a small cup. And it's time for us to magnify what God has done and allow what he has made portable for us, internal. Like let it come inside of us. I have a concern for our church because the world is like they're freaking out over anxiety. And it's getting in the way of the full life
that God wants us to have. But I believe that through the Lord Jesus Christ, we have greater resources than the world has. We have a deeper truth than the world has. We of all people should be the most resilient people so that as God gets us through what we're going through, we can reach out a hand to a neighbor who doesn't have this resource. So right now in these moments, and we do this every week here at CCB, we want you to experience the world of God in a cup. So together we pull back the soul of fame from the piece of bread. This represents the body of Christ broken for you. There is no doubt when you take this, that God is good. The body of Christ broken for you. And we pull back the soul of fame from the cup. There's an ocean of mercy in this cup. There's a world of love and forgiveness in this cup. All your past, all your sins, all your shames washed away with one sip, the blood of Christ shed for you.
