How Does Someone Feel Darkness? | Adam French

Welcome to another episode of A Word From A Word. I wanna ask you this question. How do you feel darkness? Have you ever felt darkness? Well, the Bible says that God said in Exodus chapter 10 and verse 21, that the Egyptians were gonna feel darkness. Let me read it to you. The Lord said to Moses here in verse 21, Exodus 10, stretch out your hand towards heaven and there will be darkness over the land of Egypt. And here it is, a darkness that can be felt. Now, this is after the people of Israel have been, they've been in captivity for 430 years. God is using Moses and Aaron to let the people, to lead the people out of captivity, right? And there's been a series of plagues that happened. This is the ninth plague. There'll be 10 totally. It's a wonderful story. Go there and read it. Just the power of God, the redemption of God, and also how God hears the cries of his people. But during this time, it has gotten very dim and desolate for the Egyptians. And also it's gotten hard for the people of Israel. Now, during this passage, I want us to think about this. Whenever you are in darkness, right? Or you fall literally into a place of darkness, you see it, then you experience it, right?

You experience what it's like to be in a dark room. I'm just talking about physically here with our senses, right? And then what? It begins to captivate you, or you can determine how you feel, right? So you see it, you experience it, your mind thinks about all the things that are going on, and then you determine how you feel. Are you afraid? Are you comfortable? Or it's hot, you're cold? You begin to experience it. Now, they say that once you lose one sense, another sense is heightened, right? So I can just imagine, it says, the Bible says they were there for three days, right? For three days. And you can imagine being in darkness, and look, they've had all kinds of plagues take place during this time. I bet every time, I can just picture, you know, the Egyptians sitting there and they hear a noise, right? These three days were intense. They were filled with worry and fright. You know, what was gonna happen? Was hell gonna come from the sky as they saw another plague? Was locust gonna come?

Was fly gonna come? Were there gonna be frogs everywhere like they had seen previously, right? I think the word that's used there in Hebrew, it really means, the sages would say this, that it paralyzed them. Like, it immobilized them. Like, it was so dark, it was such a heaviness that they could feel it, that they couldn't even move. Now listen, here's what's interesting in verse 22 and 23. I'll go in and read it. It says, so Moses stretched out his hands towards heaven, and there was a thick darkness throughout the land of Egypt for three days. One person could not see the other, and for three days, they did not move. That's what I'm talking about. They were immobile, they couldn't even move from where they were, yet all the Israelites had light where they live, right? And this passage does two things, right? It points back to creation in Genesis, and then it points forward to Christ. Remember, if you'll remember in the beginning in Genesis chapter one, it says that the earth was formless, right? And God created it. And then God said, let there be light. So God is the creator, literally, of light.

Well, light also creates what? Life. If you don't have light, then you don't have life. Nothing can grow, nothing can survive without light. So God is the creator of light. He's the creator of life. And so it's pointing back to sort of this judgment, right? You take away the presence of God, not only can you not have physical life, like creation has brought, like the sun brings, you cannot have spiritual life, right? You cannot have spiritual life without the light of God. And that's why Jesus says, right, in John, I think it's chapter eight here, look at my notes, John chapter eight and verse 12, he says, I am the light, right? He says, I am the light of the world. Not a light, some light, he is the light. He is the way to salvation. He is the way to bring you out of your hope, out of your struggle, out of your worry, wherever you're at in this present moment in yourself, whatever you're going through with your family, your friends, or the terminal that may be happening on the yard or with guards, right? Where's the light in this? I'm in the dark place, right? The light is in Christ. Scripture says if we remain in him, right, he will bring us a satisfaction

that nothing else can bring. And so in order to live spiritually, right, on earth, we have to live spiritually, right, in the presence of God. That's how we have eternal process. So here's what I always say when I get finished kind of studying through a passage, so what, right? What does that mean to you? What does that mean to me? How can we apply this to our life? Well, let me just, there's three things here, and I'll do this real quick. One is, who you are, right, who you are with, who you are with will either block or bring in the light. The Egyptians are following Pharaoh. They had a long time, right, to see. They had eight other plagues to see that God was with who? The Israelites. Moses was telling the truth. They could have went over and said, listen, we're gonna follow Moses, we're gonna follow this God, this is the real one true God, Pharaoh, you're not it. But instead, they stuck with him. And sometimes we gotta separate ourselves. Listen, you're wondering why you're stuck in darkness? You need to move away, maybe, I don't know, maybe you need to move away from the people that you're hanging with. Maybe God's calling you out of that group,

out of that people, out of that pod. So outside, maybe it's time to make a change. Because I can tell you this, who you're with will determine whether it blocks the light or it brings the light. That's number one. The second thing here is this, who you turn to in darkness determines how long you stay there. Who are you gonna turn to? Are you turning to God? Are you turning to his word? Or are we gonna turn to people that don't believe in a biblical worldview? Now, it's okay to have counselors and doctors and people in our life that can help us. But if it goes against the word of God, the Bible says there's safety in a multitude of counselors. Who are you consistently hanging around? The third thing is, listen, first, who you are with can block or bring the light. A question you gotta ask yourself, who do you turn to when you're in darkness? And third one is, who you place your faith in determines, right, if you're gonna live in darkness for eternity or live in the light in heaven forever. Listen, there's one truth that we all know. Everybody listening to this, watching this, and even myself, we are gonna die. The Bible says when we die a physical death,

we will also die spiritually, right? And we're gonna have to fate, well, we won't die spiritually but there will be a judgment day when we'll either be dead spiritually in condemnation because we rejected God or we'll live in eternal light with Christ our Lord because we accepted the gift of his son. Just a question to ask you, have you ever given your life to Jesus? Have you ever recognized your own sin? The Bible says we were born into sin, right? We don't have to teach a two-year-old how to say mine, mine, mine, or more, more, more. We were born into sin. Because of the fall, we are all sinners. I'm a sinner, you're a sinner. But God said, I'm gonna do something about that. I can never make myself perfect. I can never deserve the righteousness of God or deserve to be in the presence of God. But listen, it wasn't the nails that kept Jesus on the cross, no, no. He did that joyfully. He did that willingly. Jesus went on the cross to die for your sin, to die for my sin. He didn't just stay dead, right? The Bible says on the third day, he rose from the dead. He's seen by over 500 people. Everything in history is built on that moment

of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus joyfully died for you. My sin, my sin put Jesus on the cross and so did yours. And he willingly died for that. He joyfully died for that because of his great love for you. My friend, you can ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart right now and you can live eternally forever with Christ our Lord in the light of heaven. And it doesn't matter what you've done in the past. Doesn't matter how wicked we've all been. The cross was enough. So maybe you can pray this prayer for the first time. If you want to, you can pray with me. Here's how it goes. It's not the words, it's your faith. Father in heaven, I know that I'm a sinner. I know that my sin separates me from you, but I ask and I believe in your son, Jesus, that he died on the cross, that he took on my sin and the sins of the world and he conquered death and sin and he rose from the dead. And I believe in Jesus as Lord. I wanna receive him and that sacrifice as a free gift. I receive Jesus into my heart. Will you fill me with the Holy Spirit? I surrender my life to you, Jesus. Amen. If you prayed that prayer for the first time, praise God.

The Bible says that the angels in heaven rejoice. You can imagine football fields upon football fields, millions of people rejoicing, angels rejoicing in heaven because you gave your life to Jesus. And I encourage you right now to find a Bible that you can read easily, NIV, King James Bible, whatever you can read and understand, get a Bible, begin to read it. If you say, I can't read, listen to the Bible, begin to listen to the word of God, consume yourself with the word of God, listen to Christian music, surround yourself with Christian brothers and sisters. And I believe. that you can spend the rest of your life walking in the light, turning and surrounding yourselves with godly people who don't block the light, but bring the light.
