How Consistency Leads to Prosperity

Well, come on, everybody, you're happy to be at church today. Welcome to you. We're so thrilled you're here today on all of our campuses. It's incredible. Now, don't be don't be tempted by those doughnuts out in the lobby today. All right. Don't don't just just keep going. Walk right past him. Your boy is on day seven of no diet Coke. Come on, somebody. It's going to be a boring sermon today. Just just just prepare for it. And you haven't jumped in with us yet. And that's really that's really what what this season is about. And it's about seeking the Lord and hearing from him more clearly, maybe than ever before. In fact, I wanted to encourage you with a verse I felt like the Lord gave me this week for each and every one of us. It's from the prophet Jeremiah speaking on behalf of the Lord. And this is this is what this is what the Lord says. You will seek me. I love this part.

And you will find me. You will seek me and you will fight. Aren't you thankful today for a God who says, all you got to do is look and I'm right there. You're not going to. Hey, he's not hiding from any of us. All you got to do is seek him. You'll find him when you seek him with all of your heart. And that's what these 21 days are about. So we invite you to come on board and be a part of it. Jump in and experience it with each and every and each and every one of us. I think it's going to be an incredible, incredible season and an amazing start to your best year. And that's really what this series is all about. We've titled it your best year. That's more than just a catchphrase. That's more than just a hype title. All right. That that's more than just a hope and a prayer. We really do believe that this year, 2026 will be your best year. And we've built this whole series to help teach you how to experience it because we don't want to just think it. We want to actually live it. And the series is based off of the first Psalm in the book of Psalms. And we're going to look at it in every single week of the series. I believe Psalm one is placed there intentionally for us as a prologue to the entire Psalms. There's 150 Psalms and Psalm one kicks it all off. I believe with some foundational truths to demonstrate for each and every one of us that there's actually a way of life that's different than we're living. And that's what we learned together last week. If you were here, we learned that your best. year is a blessed year, but a blessed year

and your best year might look different than you thought. So this is not a series promising you, you know fancy vacations and new cars and big time promotions. I pray that happens in your life in 2026. That'd be awesome. Let's all get a brand new car, take a fancy vacation and get a big promotion. Let's do that. That's incredible, but that's not, that's not gonna make it your best year. Cause the reality is this, some of you got a new car last year and that car has already got a scratch on it. Some of you got a promotion last year and you still hate your job. Come on. Some of you took a fancy vacation last year and you came home with COVID. Hello. So those things don't make it your best year. The psalmist opens our eyes to what your best year really can look like. And Psalm 1 would illustrate for us what this year can be for you if you'll allow it to happen. And the psalmist says it like this. Let's look at it. Blessed is the one, that's the subtitle for the series. Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on his law day and night. That person, what person? The blessed person. The one having the best year. That person is like a tree planted. And that's what I wanna teach you about today. We're gonna talk about the tree planted by streams of water which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. And I like this last part and you should like it too. Whatever they do prospers. Come on, don't you love that scripture? It's a beautiful, beautiful promise from the scriptures. And it's a picture for us, an image of what it looks like to have your best year. And in Psalm 1, there are two words that really stand out to me. And they're two words that I wanna focus in on with you today. And I believe they describe your best year. If 2026 is gonna be your best year, then you must be, here are the two words, you must be planted and prospering. Planted and prospering. If you're taking notes today, write down those two words. Note takers are world changers. You wanna have your best year, you gotta take some notes. Because this sermon, as good as it's gonna be,

will be forgotten tomorrow if you hadn't written it down. So you need to write up planted and prospering. And I would submit to you today that those two words are truly inseparable. I would suggest that those two words are like two peas in a pod. You get it? Two peas planted and prospering. Two peas in a pod. You won't prosper if you aren't planted. And if you are planted, you can't help but prosper. And that's what we're gonna discover today from Psalm chapter one in 2026. I want you to be planted and prospering. I was thinking about this because many years ago, when my kids were still little, little kids, I had a really dumb decision day when I was doing some yard work. I had a bush in front of my house that was, can we just say it was prospering? It was thriving. It was way overgrown and I couldn't keep it contained. And so I decided one day that I was gonna have to take the bush out. And I cut it back and I got my shovel out and I started to dig around the root ball of this bush. And I don't know if you've ever tried to dig up a bush or a tree in the fertile soil of Hampton Roads. I don't know, but I can tell you, it was proving to be quite a challenge.

And as I was working on digging up this root ball, I had what at the moment seemed like a brilliant idea. I thought I'm gonna work smarter, not harder. And I remembered that in my garage, I had a strap and on both ends of that strap were these large metal hooks. And so I went in the garage and I got the strap and I took one end of that strap with that large metal hook and I wrapped it around the root ball of that tree. And I took the other end of that strap with that large metal hook, and I connected it to my 1997 Ford Taurus. Come on, somebody. They don't make them like they used to. Some of y'all don't know nothing about a 1997 Ford Taurus, but I drove one proudly. And I thought, you know, this is a good idea. Meanwhile, my kids were watching, they were little. And of course, they wanted to be a part of this whole redneck extravaganza. And so I put them in the back seat, standing up, looking out the back window, so they could observe when dad does the magic and pulls the root ball out of the soil. And so I'd never done anything like this before. And so I didn't really know the procedures, but I decided what I need is power. And the way to get power from a 1997 Ford Taurus is you don't edge into it, you floor it. That's the way you get power from a 1997 Ford Taurus. And so I threw it in drive.

And y'all, when I say I floored it, I did, I floored it. And I'm looking through the rear view mirror, and I'm expecting to see what all of you are not now expecting to see, because you're smarter than I am. But I expected to see that root ball come right out of the ground. That's what I expected to see. Instead, what I saw was that strap came loose from that root ball, and it was happening now almost like it was in slow motion. That large metal hook connected that strap was flying straight toward my rear view windshield. And it was coming right for that rear window, straight for my kid's face. That's what I saw. And so I shouted, take cover, to which the kids all ducked, thankfully. And literally, I think it was a miracle. I think it was God's protection over my dumb decision. How many of you have had God protect you from a dumb parenting decision? I mean, the fact that any of our kids are alive is miraculous, to be honest. And that metal hook hit the back windshield. I mean, it sounded like a gun fire inside that Taurus. And somehow, somehow, it didn't shatter the windshield. It just skipped right over the top of the car. And I threw it in park, and I just sat. I thought, I am so dumb,

and I'm definitely not telling Tabitha. And meanwhile, my kids are like, do it again, daddy, do it again. And I was thinking about that, because I discovered on that day why that bush was flourishing, why that bush was growing and expanding, and why it was taking over my yard, because something was happening under the ground that I couldn't see. Something was happening below the surface that I didn't even realize. That bush was flourishing because it was planted. It had this elaborate root system that not even a 1997 Ford Taurus could topple. And I think, honestly, that's a picture of the life that God wants you to live in 2026. The psalmist is giving us an image of a tree that is firmly planted, a tree that is both planted and prospering, a tree that has these deep roots that will not topple. And because of that, it's advancing, it's progressing, it's maturing, it's prospering, planted and prospering. And I wonder, will you in 2026 be planted and prospering? And before you say, oh yeah, yeah, that's me, I want that. I need you to know that if you're going to prosper, if you're going to be producing in 2026, it means you've got to start by being planted, by being planted. What I mean by that is you got to stick with it.

You got to grow some roots. You got to be consistent. You got to stop overestimating the short-term and underestimating the long-term. Have you noticed this? This is ingrained in all of us. We love to pursue long-term results with short-term effort. I'll prove it to you, I'll prove it to you. On the day that I was writing this message, the Powerball Lottery was up to $1.5 billion. And the whole time I wrote this message. I had one thought running in the back of my mind. I should go buy a ticket. How many of you, when the Powerball got to $1.5 billion, be honest, be honest. How many of you, how many of you bought a $2 ticket? Come on, you bought a $2 ticket. Oh, you better bet your bottom dollar you did. And if you didn't, you should have because the church needs that money. I mean, a tithe on 1.5 billion. Woo, I had it up. I was ready for you to win. You bought it because one lucky $2 investment can lead to a lifetime of wealth. So of course you bought that. And I think that's the way a lot of us think about the entirety of our lives. But a $2 investment might get you a lifetime of wealth but it won't get you a lifetime of prosperity.

That's not how it works. You gotta invest for the long haul. You gotta stick it out. Two weeks at the gym doesn't make you spiritually fit. Or physically fit. Two weeks of prayer and fasting might make you hangry but it doesn't make you holy. Not yet. Coming to church for two weeks straight, that's awesome. Some of y'all, ooh, some of y'all have perfect attendance in 2026. That's awesome, that's awesome. But there's 50 more Sundays to go. A tree is properly planted to prosper when it has deep roots. And you gotta plant yourself if you're gonna prosper this year. And roots that grow down deep, listen, they take time. They take time. You gotta invest for the long haul. You gotta quit expecting these immediate results. A prosperous life looks much more like crock pot cooking than microwave cooking. You get it? You gotta be planted. You gotta be planted. Everybody wants to, these days, just kind of pull up roots and go somewhere else. And I just feel like I need to tell you that the best place to grow is where you are.

So just put down some roots. Did you know that 23 years ago, a little secret, we don't talk about this much, but when Tabitha and I started this church, we didn't wanna start it here. Did you know that? Like Tabitha had grown up here. This was home for Tabitha. And I'd grown up here most of my life. And no offense, but as a hometown 757 boy, I think I can say this. Hampton Roads, 757, it ain't real sexy. Can I just say that? Like nobody drives through Pocosin and thinks sexy. And if you're at the Virginia Beach campus right now, you're like, what's a Pocosin? I know. That's the point. And so when we were gonna start this church, had this grand vision, big dream, we thought, oh man, we'll go to Charlottesville. We'll go to Short Pump. We'll go to Fairfax. Do you think I could have planted a church in any of those hoity-toity towns? No, God wanted me right here in the down and dirty unsexy 757. That's where he wanted me. Cause that's where I was. That's where I was.

Plant it, plant it. You gotta put down some roots. I just said, don't run away from your job to go chase something because the grass looks greener on another side of the fence. Don't run away from your marriage just because he's frustrating you. Don't quit on that relationship just when it gets hard. Don't walk away from the disciplines of prayer and fasting just because things are getting more hectic as the year goes on. Don't quit on your church just cause travel ball season starts. I'm just saying, don't uproot what's in your life to chase some fantasy land. You need deep roots. You need to plant yourself. Cause fruit takes time. Roots take time. Trees take time to grow and mature and develop. And I'll just say to you, steady is actually sexy. I'm helping you. Some single lady right now thinks, oh, I'm gonna go after Wild Bill in sales who's climbing the corporate ladder, you know, moving on up in the organization, driving the white Tesla, that's who I want. No, no, no, no, you don't want Wild Bill. You want Steady Eddie. That's who you want in accounting,

driving the same CRV he drove in college. That's who you want, because he has a 401k. That's who you want, everybody. Steady, deep roots. If you got married in 2025, or you're engaged to be married in 2026, let's do a little, let's have a little fun. If that's you, would you raise your hand, you got married in 2025, or you're engaged to be married in 2026? Raise your hand, raise it high, raise it high, here and here, right here, I paid for that one right there, over here, back there. Oh my gosh, come on, can you, come on, look at all these incredible couples. Amazing. And I think it's awesome. I really do, I think it's awesome. But here's the thing, getting married is easy. I think it's awesome. We clap for it. I think it's amazing. But you know who we are allowed to clap for? Those who have stayed married. You've been married 10 years, 10 years or more. Where are the 10 years or more? Raise your hand, 10 years or more. Come on, come on.

The psalmist would say, that's who you clap for, because they got some roots. They're planted, they're planted. And if you really do want this to be your best year, your best year, you gotta plant, you gotta plant yourself. You gotta grow some roots. I'll say it to you like this. Planted is the way to be prosperous. You want your best year? Plant yourself. Now, let me teach you something that's really unique about this word, planted, that the psalmist uses in the original language. It's translated for us as planted, but the more accurate translation, a translation that maybe today might help you wrap your head around would be transplanted. Transplanted. I'll tell you why. Because the trees that the psalmist is describing, these big, large, flourishing, deeply rooted trees, those trees are not natural to the landscape of the Holy Land. They're not natural to the landscape of Israel. I heard somebody say this, that the Holy Land looks a whole lot more like Nevada than North Carolina. So it's an arid, dry, sparse,

more brown than green kind of land. So the psalmist says, I want you to be a tree planted, but what he's really saying is that to be a tree planted, you've gotta be transplanted. Now, why is that important? Because a tree like that would have had to have been deliberately planted, carefully established, and intentionally nourished. It wouldn't happen on its own. And I'm just gonna tell you that if you wanna prosper in 2026 and be planted, it won't happen naturally, and it won't happen automatically, and it's not gonna happen on its own, and it's not gonna happen if you do the same thing in 2026 that you did in 2025. You gotta be intentional. It's gonna take some effort. You've gotta take deliberate steps in your faith. And that's why, listen, if you haven't yet come to the Water's Edge Church growth track, you need to come. It's so important. Here's why, because it's a way to be transplanted, transplanted from your natural into some supernatural soil. That's what the psalmist is inviting us into. That's why 21 days of prayer and fasting is so important. You're setting right now, if you're participating a new rhythm in your life, you're starving the flesh, you're feeding the spirit,

and you're discovering something. I know you are. You're discovering the flesh is strong. The flesh is demanding. Can I tell you, I'm not currently eating breakfast, and I. That's no big deal because I usually don't eat breakfast. But I have wanted some breakfast. Like day one, I woke up craving bacon and eggs. I could have swore I smelled it. The flesh is so strong. It's so strong. And every time you deny your flesh, you're being transplanted. That's why we're making such a big deal about prayer and worship weekend. It's uprooting you from your old ways and transplanting you into some new ways. That's why you're gonna join a group this semester. Some of you are gonna lead a group this semester. You're like, I could have been praying about it. Well, there's your answer. Hello. Why is that so important? Because you gotta be intentional about being planted if you really wanna prosper. That's why you're gonna be in church. Not just once or twice a month, but you're gonna be in church every Sunday. Plant it in the house with deep roots.

Because if you'll put down deep roots in the right environments, you'll grow into the right person. It'll make you experience your best year. And every one of us, every single one of us have to be uprooted from the natural and replanted, transplanted into God's garden if we really wanna prosper. I love this verse. The apostle Paul writes it. And this is what he says. And now he says, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord. So if you've said yes to Jesus, Paul says, you must continue to follow him. So you're not done. Saying yes to Jesus isn't the finish line of faith. It's the starting line. You're not done. You're to follow him. How? How? Here's how. Let your roots grow deep into him, be planted. Let your lives be built on him, be steady. And then your faith will grow strong in the truth that you were taught. And I love this. And you will, come on, say it with me, everybody.

You will overflow. Come on, say it like you are overflowing. You will overflow with thanksgiving. When I read those words, that you're to let your roots grow down deep into him and you were to be built on him, you'll grow strong, you will overflow. It sounds like somebody who is planted and prospering. You get deep roots and you are overflowing when you are planted and prospering. By the way, I don't want you to miss this. I wanna help you see in Psalm 1 that the Bible actually tells us two places that we're to let our roots grow down deep. So let me show this to you. We'll go back to the scripture. Can you put it all? I want everybody to be able to see it. It says, blessed is the one who does not walk and step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers. Stop right there. Let me teach you something. When you're reading scripture, don't just read it. Ask questions of it. So stop and ask a question. This is how you should read your Bible. Stop and ask, don't just read it. Stop and ask a question of it.

So here's the question. When the psalmist says, blessed is the one who does not walk and step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, what's he talking about? What's he talking about? I'll tell you. He's talking about your relationships, the people you're around, the people you surround yourself with in 2026. That's what he's talking about. The person who is blessed is careful about their relationships. But look at this, whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on his law day and night. Stop right there. What's he talking about? The law of the Lord. What's he referring to? The Bible, God's word. God's word. That person, the blessed person is like a tree, there we go, planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither in whatever they do. Here's our word.

They prosper, planted and prospering. The psalmist is actually giving us a very real practical application that if you really wanna be blessed, a blessed person's life has deep roots in two places, in godly relationships and in God's word. This is a blessed life. You wanna have your best year? You gotta put down some roots. Intentional, you gotta be transplanted. This doesn't happen naturally. You gotta be deliberate. You gotta put down some roots into godly relationships and God's word. By the way, you wanna develop some godly relationships and put some roots down in godly relationships? That's why we do groups. Now let me talk about that last word as we wrap up, because the word literally means what you would think. It means to succeed, to thrive, to advance, to make progress, to be profitable. And you hear that and some of you are like, yeah that's awesome, but that's really not for me. Or that's awesome, let's go, I really want that. In either case, I don't want you to have a shallow view of prosperity. I don't want you to misinterpret what I'm teaching you today because the kind of prosperity that the psalmist describes doesn't mean that in 2026 you get a pass on hardship. And it doesn't mean that in 2026 everything's easy. And it doesn't mean that in 2026 everything's going to go your way. And in 2026 everybody's going to like you. And in 2026

every day it's just going to be like unicorns jumping over rainbows pooping skittles all day long. It's going to be awesome. That is not, I am positive that that is not the way your year is going to go. Positive, because that's not the prosperity the Bible promises. So let me give you a new definition that those who are planted understand. If you're planted, you will understand this definition. Prosperity means this in the Bible. It means to move forward, to succeed, to thrive, even in hardship. Even in it. So some of you come to this idea of my best year and you have such a shallow view of it. And you think, oh, well, if I have trouble or hardship, then it can't be my best year. And that's not true. If I have trouble or hardship, then I can't prosper. And that's not true. Prosperity and hardship, prosperity and suffering actually go hand in hand in the Bible. The same word that the psalmist uses to describe prosperity in Psalm 1 is actually the same word used to describe the life of Joseph. Y'all know about Joseph in the Bible? Joseph was born hated by his brothers. Eventually, almost killed by them, then sold into slavery, where Joseph went on to be falsely accused and wrongfully imprisoned. And yet, let me show you what the Bible says about Joseph. The Bible says the Lord was with Joseph. He was with Joseph. He was with Joseph. He was with Joseph so that he, read the word everybody, so that he prospered. What? What do you mean he prospered? You just said he was hated by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned after being falsely accused. Yeah, but he prospered. It's the same word the psalmist uses to describe the way of blessing. The blessed one prospers. Joseph prospered. He succeeded to move forward and thrived even in hardship. And I'm just trying to help you see today that you can prosper in 2026 and still have some setbacks and still have some hardships and still have a breakup and still have some problems at work and still have an argument with your spouse and still struggle with an addiction and still get a bad doctor's report and still have your car break down and still lose that deal. You can still advance. You can still succeed. You can still make progress even in the middle of all that. That's what prospering looks like. You can still thrive amid hardship. Joseph did. How? If you're planted.

If you're not planted, that stuff will wipe you out. If you're not planted, those things will cause you to sign off and think, oh, this is the worst year ever. No, it's not. It's not. I don't know. No, if you're planted, imagine a year where in spite of hardship, you still thrive. That's possible. Imagine a year where in spite of difficulties and bad news, disappointments and setbacks, you still thrive. You still prosper. That's possible this year. That's the best year. Cause you can have some hardship, but if you're planted, you can still prosper. And that's the promise of Psalm one, everybody. Blessed is the one who's planted and prospering. Oh my goodness. If that doesn't get you fired up for this year, I don't know what will. I don't know what will. That's amazing. Thank you. But I get it. Cause there are some of you who have already written the year off. We're what, 11 days into it. What's today? 11 days into it. Yeah. It's good. It's good.

You've already written it off cause you're walking through some circumstances. You're experiencing some turmoil. You're feeling some frustration. You got some disappointment and you're thinking there is no way. There is no way this could ever be my best year. Not the way it started. There's no way what I'm going through could ever lead to prosperity. And I just need to tell you on your own, you're right. You're right. But when you're planted in God, when you're planted in God, only a good God could take hardship and turn it into prosperity. Only a good God who has good plans for your life could say, follow my ways, stay planted in me and I'll make you prosper. And God is just that good. I wanna testify to you today. He is just that good. And if you will stay planted, even in adversity, you'll prosper. You'll prosper. So can we just take a moment? We like to rush out of these moments. But can you just let the word settle in your heart today?

Because you can be the blessed one this year if you'll be planted. Bow your heads and close your eyes. Then open your heart, receive this word. For some of you, there's been a stirring, a stirring. You've been tempted to look in other places for fulfillment and satisfaction. For some of you, you've lived so long with such shallow roots that the idea of planting roots down deep is challenging you today. For some of you, there's a whisper from the Holy Spirit in your heart right now saying, come and be transplanted into my garden. Be deliberate about the word. Be deliberate about the roots underground. And for some of you, trusting God in the midst of hardship has been really hard. But today the Holy Spirit wants to breathe in you a renewed sense of prosperity, even in hardship. So God, do what you wanna do in our hearts and our lives now because we're open to you. Holy Spirit, speak to our hearts and make this message exactly what you want it to be in each of our hearts and in our lives. And we respond with yes, yes, Lord. Our roots grow down deep in you today. And with every head bowed and every eye closed on the second Sunday of a new year,

if you've never given your heart and life to Jesus Christ, you've never made him your Lord and Savior. This is your moment. We've sung about him, I preached about him, and now it's your opportunity to respond to him. Jesus loves you and he has a plan for your life. And he wants you to follow him today. And the way that starts is with a simple prayer right from your heart toward heaven. And I'm gonna lead you in that prayer and you can pray it silently. right where you sit, but before I do, I wonder how many of you would say, pastor, that's me, include me in that prayer today. I'm gonna give my life to Jesus. I'm gonna give my life to Jesus. I won't embarrass you or call you out, but I want you to mark this moment so you never forget it. If you'd say, pastor, that's me. I'm giving my life to Jesus today. Would you shoot your hand high in the air for just a moment? Just enough for me or your campus pastor to see it. I'm giving my life to Jesus today. Include me in that prayer. God bless you. It's amazing. It's a fresh new start in this new year, following after Jesus Christ, amazing. And pray this now, really mean it. Say, Jesus, I wanna know you.

I want my sin forgiven by you. I wanna live my life for you. Come into my heart and be my Lord and savior. In Jesus' name we pray, amen, amen. Hey, would you look this way?
