He Said What He Said | Crossroads Daily
In John 14, Jesus makes one of his clearest declarations: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” This is not just comfort for the disciples before his death. It is a claim about who he is. Jesus is saying he is the fulfillment of God’s rescue plan, the way back to relationship with God, and the foundation for truth and life itself. His death is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of something new.
Welcome to Crossroads Daily. My name is Caleb. I'm Dani. I'm Miko. And I'm Mish. We're looking at John 14 today. Lots of mic drops from Jesus in John 14. I mean, we could talk about this for like hours, but I want to narrow us in on maybe the first mic drop. It's in verse 6. Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life. I think that's one of those scriptures maybe that we hear a lot, and we just sort of put it in our pocket. Right? So I want to slow us down. Think through, as you think about Jesus being the way, the truth, and the life, which of those feels most resonant for you right now, and why? I think for me, there's been elements of each of those that are very resonant. But I think I lean more towards the way. I think in my own, my instinct is to look for the answer to a problem immediately. And Jesus is answers to our problems, but oftentimes I feel like Jesus being the life allows us to recognize whether the problem actually has a true scientific answer to like, I do this, then this happens. So I think that's, in short, that's why I lean towards the truth, is because I'm looking more for that, like, this is happening, so therefore I need this so that this can happen. I think where Jesus challenges me is that life portion, because the way, the truth, the life, the way offers some clarity. The truth offers some clarity, but the life, I think there's some like lack of clarity oftentimes when we look at Jesus's life, and what he offers his disciples that's really challenging me right now.
Great. Thanks, man. That's good. I think that would be a combination of both, I think, the way and the life, and typically it all plays out in like some sort of story in my life and just kind of how that relates to scripture. And most recently I can recall dealing with a situation with my son's mother and just some disagreement there. And I just felt like I was at this point of like, okay, how do I navigate this? And I just felt like the Holy Spirit so kindly was like, humility lights your path. So as you're deciding, do I do this, do I do that, whichever one causes you to posture yourself in humility, that's the way. And that was, so I don't know, this is very recent for me, so it's like, as I'm hearing this, like, that's, and Jesus being the life, Jesus being the way, you never have to deviate from the posture of humility in following him. That's actually going to be an indicator of, is this the way Jesus would do it? Is this the way Jesus would go about it? It's like an unchanging character trait. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah. Yeah. I'm kind of leaning in the way. I am directionally challenged. I can't find myself. Whenever someone asks me like, hey, where's whatever, I'm always like, oh, it's back there. It's not back there. You made it here.
You made it here. And so I think about like, that's right, I made it barely, barely, I barely made it here. I think about that with Jesus and I'm like, oh, if you're the way, all I have to do is follow you. Look toward you and follow you where you're going. And that for me looks like a whole bunch of different things. It could look like just imitating Jesus, making sure that the things that I'm doing match up with what he was teaching and walking out. Am I showing gratitude? Am I showing humility where I need to show humility? Am I loving people well? Am I taking care of the marginalized, that kind of thing? And so like for me, that's, I think that's what resonates the most is like the way, you know, show me the way. I want to know which way I need to go. Yeah. Especially because I'm directionally challenged. You know, what comes to mind is there's that script, there's scripture that tells us to follow like those ancient paths. And if Jesus is the way, and if we're like truly to believe that, I would assume that we're to believe like Jesus is that ancient path, but at the time he felt like such a new thing, especially to all the people he was talking to, to preaching to, he felt like a new thing. I don't know. It's just interesting to me. I don't know how to exactly apply that. Right. Yeah. Yeah. We're going to get to some of that ancient path here in a couple of days.
So yeah. That's a teaser. Stick with it. I think for me, Jesus has the life is like really resonant right now. There's a lot of Christians in culture who will beat you up with the truth, right? I think they have the truth on their side and in many ways they do, but they just want to like whomp you on the head with it. What I want to do, especially I have three kids at home and neighbors and family, I just want to want to model a life that people see and they're like, oh, there's something different about that. thing in that that I want. There's something that's working for that family, like, I'm not shying away from telling them the truth, but I want to demonstrate that following Jesus is a better way. It's the right way, it's the truth, it is also the way to God, but it's also the way to thriving. And I think a lot of times people don't associate following Jesus with thriving, they associate it with rules, or regulations, or whatever. That is not freedom, it's more chains with rules. Totally. As you say that, like, putting it in, because it's like, he's using these three specific, you know, phrases for a reason. The way, the truth, the life. And it's like, as you were saying that, I'm thinking about, like, wow, like, if he was only the truth, then we wouldn't know what a life in that way looks like. You know what I'm saying? Like, he has to, like, I'm gonna demonstrate what the truth looks like with my life. This is the way to go about that. You know what I mean? Like, it all kind of, like, ties together. Yeah, totally. He's all three of those. Exactly. And you have to have all three of them, or it becomes, like, lopsided, or you got a flat tire in some way. Yeah. It doesn't work. Thinking about, again, those three, the way, truth, and the life, where is God leading you right now? Where is he pressing on you? Maybe, like, it's one of those that's more challenging for you, or maybe it's one where he's trying to grow you. What does that look like practically? Not just Thea Red, but practically in your life. I mean, I'll
start, okay? If you want to ask the questions, I'm gonna go first. So, all my kids are playing baseball, and I don't know if you know about this or not, but, like, baseball parents kind of suck. Like, they get, like, way into it. You know what I'm saying? Like, you shouldn't be yelling at umpires at, like, 10U baseball games. Yeah. This is not the World Series, right? That's a direct challenge to any baseball player. Yeah, totally. I love baseball, and I love all y'all, but sometimes we get a little overboard, okay? You're kidding. Like, it's loose with the baseball? I mean, maybe it's not as loose with the baseball, but it's not. That's the sport that I know right now. Be like, your son is not Utani, okay? Like, let's just play. But yeah, so I'm trying to, like, model a different way, right? There's a team that we've played multiple times, and man, like, they just, they're rough. Like, they give us words, and they give us actions, and I was literally talking to my boys before we played them this weekend, before we got there, like, hey, if we win or lose, we're gonna have a good attitude. If we win or lose, we're gonna be loving. If we win or lose, we're gonna tell the other team, like, great job, right? Because we represent Jesus on the baseball field just as much as we're in our church, or just as much as we're in the neighborhood, or whatever. So again, that's modeling that life. Jesus is pressing on me to do that, and I'm trying to model it for my boys and my daughters so that they also do that. Yeah. Yeah. That's good. I think for me, I don't know, because one, I definitely, like, just with me feeling called to just go deeper into my studies, like, even as we're taking the biblical foundations course, to just even be more rooted in truth, and to know more truth, and to be able to, you know, regurgitate it, you know, things like that. But then I'm also, in my personal life, I'm feeling like, specifically in marriage, where it's like, did you show up like Jesus in that? Are you showing up Jesus consistently in this way, in the way you're serving your wife? Because I'm, specifically now, and I'm like, I feel like I've probably taken a step back from serving my wife well over these past few weeks, and I'm feeling that tug, where it's like, yeah, this is, this is sustainable. I need to, you know what I mean? I need to fix this, or whatever. And I don't know, so I think that's something that I'm, like, I don't know, I would say that in this scripture, specifically, how that's, like, pressing on my heart, if I
was to say, like, what God is speaking to me in this moment, you know, regarding this, it would definitely be modeling the way Jesus died for the church right now. Like, being conscious of that, and then following through with that, like, on my day-to-day right now. Well, it goes back to that humility you were talking about, right? Like, putting myself second, a slot underneath my wife or my family, or whatever, yeah. I can relate to that. I'm in a season right now, I've been married for 30 years, and it's... Ooh, we should snap to that or something, come on, man, that was a mic drop right there, something, man. You know, sometimes it feels like it was like this, and sometimes I'm like, oh my gosh, we've been married for 30 years. But I can relate to that, like, it's really easy to get into a space where you do take each other for granted, because it's just normal. You've been doing this for so long, it's like, this is just normal. And so, I think God's definitely been pressing on me for that for a while, and I had a conversation with my husband, I was just like, man, I don't know what's going on, but we're kind of missing each other, I don't know what's happening. And I think that there's an opportunity. to lean into the humility and the love and to lead with that first. It's so easy to be like, oh, he's always going to be there, we're cool, you know, and then you don't really like, I don't really show the love that I need to show him that he needs. And so, yeah, I think that's a good call out, it's a good shout out. And I think for all relationships, it's probably timely and truthful. I think I've heard the term like, you just become like really good roommates at some point. And I think it's easy for Christians, especially to think, I'm a Christian and I'm married. So therefore, I don't need to be intentional. It's like, no, no, no, Jesus tells us to be even more intentional. 100%. So I relate to that as well. I mean, honestly, you calling out humility, that's a big one for me. There's like, I think God is leading me in this season of both being very humble, especially
with my family, lowering myself and being very gentle in my nature with them and my neighbors. But there's also this other aspect of like advocacy for people who are marginalized, people who are meek, people who experience injustice to actually speak up and speak out for them. What that specifically looks like, I don't know, because like the internal dialogue sometimes just says like, I just want to scream. I don't know if that's the right thing or the wrong thing, but that's my internal dialogue of what I'm like wrestling with, especially when I see it in front of me. Yeah. Great. Well, God is a good father, gives good gifts to his kids. So as we close up shop today, you at home, whatever, think about what do you need? What do you need from God? Do you need Jesus to be the way for you? Point you in a clear direction? Because there's confusion. Do you need him to be the truth? Like you need to know I need to do this thing or you need to be the life, need to see a spark of something that you don't have right now. Ask God for that thing. We'll see you tomorrow.
