Hey, we're Todd and Julie Mullins, Senior Pastors here at Christ Fellowship Church, and we're so glad that you're tuning in for service today. Yeah, Christ Fellowship is one church that meets in lots of different locations, including right here with you. Yeah, and our prayer for you today is that you would sense God's love for you. See, I don't personally know all that you're going through today and what you're up against, but God does. And He hears your prayers, and He knows your name, and He's right here for you today as you call out to Him. Yeah, thanks again for joining with us today. We love you, and we're praying for you. Father, we put you first, first and foremost, above everything. We want you to be center of everything that is said and done in this house. And I love that it is the name that brings peace to the most anxious situation. It's the name that brings joy and hope when depression or despair can fill a room. Can I tell you today, you have access to that name. Simply by calling on the name of Jesus, you have access to every promise that scripture can bring. You know, our heart is broken as a church this week as we've watched the news that has come out of Venezuela. And for anybody in this room or joining with us online that may know people who've been affected by the earthquakes, I wanna tell you today that Jesus is a strong tower, a place that we can run to, that He weeps when we weep, that He is there in the midst of the tragedy. But I wanna pray for that nation today. But most importantly, I wanna pray that the church of Jesus Christ would shine brighter today in Venezuela than it ever has before,

and that the gospel of Jesus would reign. So God, we pray right now for those who are affected by these earthquakes. God, first of all, we pray for just your peace and your comfort. God, my heart breaks for those that woke up to a new reality. to the building that once was there or a home that once was there a family member who once was there but is not anymore but God you are present and ever present help in times of trouble God that your word says that we can run to you and God that you bring peace and you bring comfort we pray to do that in the country today but God I pray for the church in Venezuela today to shine brighter than it ever has before God that churches would fling their doors open they would care for the hurting and the broken and the gospel of Jesus would go forth even in the midst of what the enemy meant for evil God that there would be good and that good would triumph in Jesus name we pray and the church said amen amen come on can we give Jesus praise today I love it say so glad that you are here with us today hey why don't you turn to one or two people around you give them a high-five and you can grab your seats today my of the coming oh say can you see he is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored by the dawn's early light whose broad stripes and bright stars stand beside her and guide her through the perilous fight through the night with the light from above glory, glory, hallelujah glory, glory, hallelujah

This week we're thanking God for America and for the 250 years of freedom that we have had as a country. It's time to reflect on everything that has made us the nation that we are today. There's different images that come to mind when people think about our country. For some, it's the American flag, the stars and stripes. For others, it's the Statue of Liberty standing tall in the New York Harbor. Still for others, it's this. Nothing more American than a baseball game, right? Eating a hot dog and maybe even some Cracker Jacks. This week, we stop to remember those who have given their lives so that we can live in a free nation. We remember the godly heritage that our country has been built upon. And in a few days, we'll gather with friends and family to cook out in the backyard and light some fireworks, all to stop and remember that freedom isn't free, that it costs us dearly. You've heard it said before that the only reason we live in the land of the free

is because America is the home of the brave. America was founded as a nation under the authority and the blessing of God Almighty. Now, some have tried to write God out of our history books and they've done a pretty good job at it, but the truth remains. Our founding fathers established this nation on the fundamentals of our Christian faith, not simply on religion, but on the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Even before the founding fathers, it was the intent of the pilgrims who traveled to this land to build a nation that would be governed by the principles from God's Word. In 1620, when the pilgrims launched out for this new world, they formed together an agreement that was known as the Mayflower Compact. And in this agreement, you see the intent and the motives of these first settlers. They wrote this, they said, having undertaken for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith, a voice to plant this first colony in the northern parts of Virginia. They go on to say, we want our nation to be a stepping stone to take the gospel to the nations of the world. Then when our founding fathers gathered decades later to form our country, they actually looked to the Word of God for guidance. Patrick Henry, the man known for shouting, give me liberty or give me death,

he also said, it cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians, and not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. And it was our first president, George Washington, that said, you do well to learn above all the religion of Jesus Christ. You see, our nation that we're celebrating this week was founded, it was formed on the truth and the principles from the Word of God. This week, as we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation, it's important not just to look back, but to also look ahead. When you think about 250 years as a country, that's a pretty significant milestone. And some milestones are just bigger than others. You probably still remember your 16th birthday, right? When you were finally old enough to drive, or maybe the year that you turned 30 or 40. Those birthdays just feel more significant. And they usually cause us to stop and reflect. And I couldn't help but feel the same way as I thought about this milestone for America. I mean, 250 years. Think about how much has happened in 250 years. Think about all we've accomplished, from handwritten letters to FaceTime, from horse-drawn carriages to Teslas, from a world where most people rarely traveled

far beyond their hometown to people walking on the moon. We've seen incredible breakthroughs in medicine and science, communication and technology over these last 250 years. We've seen movements for justice and freedom and equality. We've seen companies built on this soil that have quite literally changed the landscape of the world. We've come so far in so many ways and made so many advancements that our founding fathers could have never imagined. And yet it's not hard to see that we still have a ways to go. Wars rage on. Injustice has not disappeared. Division is everywhere. And sometimes the path forward can feel unclear. But I believe that when people find themselves facing problems that are bigger than themselves, eventually they realize they need something or someone bigger than themselves. Throughout our nation's history, men and women have been used by God to call us back to God through prayer. In 1787, in the early days of the Continental Congress, there was a lot of division and arguing on the Congressional floor. Some things never seem to change, right? Benjamin Franklin stood to his feet and he said this, I therefore beg that all men and women

who have been called to God by God and he said this, The Congress took a two-day leave of absence to pray and to seek the heart of God. They actually called the people to a day of prayer and fasting. Presidents from George Washington to Franklin D. Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan have called our nation to prayer. And it was President Truman that established the National Day of Prayer. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has led our nation in prayers for forgiveness and unity and equality. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. Billy Graham led our nation to pray in times of turmoil and crisis. They said, Lord, teach us to pray. The first rule is one in prayer. We have to spend time every day in prayer. When people find themselves facing problems bigger than themselves, we eventually realize we need someone bigger than ourselves. As I was preparing for this message, I came across a prayer that Abraham Lincoln prayed during one of the darkest moments in our nation's history.

As you know, Abraham Lincoln was our 16th president, serving from 1861 until he was assassinated in 1865. He led the nation through the Civil War, preserving the Union and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which paved the way for the abolition of slavery. He wrote this prayer in the middle of the Civil War. Yet the words felt like they could have been pulled from some modern day social media post because of just how relevant they are today. This is the prayer that Lincoln prayed. He said, we have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We've forgotten God. Then he goes on to say, we have forgotten the hand which preserved us in peace. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. Man, isn't that the danger of success? That the more we build, the more we believe in our own ability. We begin to believe that we built it all ourselves, that our success came from our intelligence

or our innovation, our systems, our effort. And slowly and subtly, we drift away from being dependent on God. Now that's a danger for us as a nation, but it's also a danger for us as individuals. Success can produce self-sufficiency. Comfort can create complacency. Power can produce pride and we eventually stop praying. Perhaps the most sobering line from Lincoln's prayer is when he said we have become too self-sufficient, too proud to pray. And when we stop praying we start drifting, drifting away from God because nobody drifts accidentally towards God. Drifting takes us away from God, slowly. Schedules get busier, the noise of life just gets louder, prayer becomes occasional, church becomes optional, conviction becomes quieter. Before long we find ourselves anxious and overwhelmed, spiritually empty, wondering how did we get here? Could it be that we've become so productive that we no longer know how to be present, present with God, present with each other? We've learned how to optimize every moment, perhaps at the expense of our own souls. We have apps for productivity, calendars for efficiency, watches that track our sleep and our workouts, but many of us have no rhythm of connecting with God, no rhythm of prayer, no solitude with our Savior, no secret place with our sustainer and we're suffering because of it. I know a lot of people in our country and even in our church believe in God, but I wonder how many of us would say that we're desperate for God, desperate for His presence, desperate for Him to move in our nation and in our own lives. See as America was being torn apart during the Civil War, President Lincoln became more desperate for a move of God, not just in the form of a nationwide revival that would heal our land, yes, but he prayed for a move of personal impact in the hearts of men and women, so he called for a time of prayer and a fasting. Now when you think back over our nation's history, you'll discover that some of the most influential moments didn't begin in a courtroom or in a Capitol, but in the

prayer closet. They began in prayer meetings, in churches like this. They began with people crying out to God. Before America became a great nation, the Great Awakening swept across the colonies. People gathered in fields and churches to repent and seek God. Taverns were closed, families were restored, communities transformed. Then in the 1800s came the second Great Awakening. Hundreds of thousands turned to Christ and in the middle of that, in 1850s, a businessman named Jeremiah Lanphier started a simple noon prayer meeting in downtown New York City. Now first, only a handful of people attended, but within a few months, thousands gathered every day at noon to pray. Historians estimate that over one million people came to faith in Christ during what became known as the Prayer Revival. In 1906, on Azusa Street in Los Angeles, the people gathered hungry for God, and the Holy Spirit was poured out and moved in power. In generation after generation, God continued to awaken his people. Later in the 1950s, stadiums were filled across America during the Billy Graham Crusades. Hundreds of thousands gathered to hear the gospel preached, and countless lives were changed. Those Crusades weren't built on marketing strategies. They were fueled by prayer. Teams of believers prayed for months before Billy Graham ever preached from a platform. From campus revivals in places like Asbury in Kentucky, to the revivals we see breaking out on college campuses today, God is pouring out his Spirit, changing and renewing our nation, because prayer shapes history. Now in this prayer that Lincoln prayed, he said, we have forgotten God. Do you know what one of the most repeated commands in Scripture is? It's to remember. Remember. It's not believe. It's not trust. It's remember. Remember who rescued you. Remember who carried you. Remember who strengthens you, who provides for you. Psalm 105 verse 5 says, remember the wonders God has performed, the amazing things that he has done. Psalms 103 verse 2 says, bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits. So why does God tell us to remember so many times? Perhaps it's because he knows we're prone to spiritual amnesia, right? We forget the prayers that God already answered. We forget the doors that he's already opened, the times that

that He made a way when you didn't think there was a way. We forget the grace that He's already given to us. See, God knew that we would be prone to forget and prone to wander, which is why He gave us a pathway back to Him. In 2 Chronicles 7, 14, it says, if my people, which are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I'll forgive their sins, and I will heal their land. I love that God doesn't begin with condemnation, but rather with an invitation. God says, if my people come to me, my people. He's not talking about the world. He's not talking about the politicians in Washington or the influencers on social media. He's talking about you and me. He says, my people. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves. That word humble literally means to bend the knee, to surrender, to bow low, to acknowledge our need for God. So He says, if my people will humble themselves and pray. Prayer is the secret that unlocks the promise in that passage. And prayer is more than just talking to God. It's a dependence upon God. Prayer is saying, God, we can't do this without you.

God, I need you. Prayer actually tunes our heart to heaven. It puts us in a position to hear. It aligns us with the purposes of God. Think about this. The disciples followed Jesus closely for three years. I mean, they were with Him day in and day out. They watched Him raise the dead, heal the sick, take a little boy's lunch and turn it into a feast for thousands. They saw Him calm storms on the Sea of Galilee with just His words. They even saw Him walk on water. And yet the one thing they asked Him to teach them to do was how to pray. Lord, teach us to pray. Not to perform miracles, not to turn water into wine, but to pray. Because somewhere along the way, they realized that prayer was the most powerful thing they could do. Because prayer changes things. Prayer gets a hold of the hand of God. Prayer changes us. It changes our families. It changes our churches and our communities. It can even change a nation. God goes on to say in that scripture, "'If my people seek my face,' not just His hand, not just His provision,

but His presence." See, there's a difference. Too many people want what they can get from God instead of just wanting God. Too often, we're looking for a quick fix to our problems, asking God to meet our need when the greatest need that we have is for Him. We've been made to be known by Him, to know Him, to be loved by Him, and to love Him. And without Him, you will never experience the life that you've been created for. So revival begins when God's people become desperate for His presence. God says, "'If my people seek my face and turn from their wicked ways.'" That's all about repentance. And repentance isn't just feeling badly about something bad you did. It's actually a change in direction. It's saying, God, my way isn't working. I want your ways. True repentance is gonna lead to true change in my life. And then God says, "'Then I will hear from heaven.'" After all this, "'Then I will hear from heaven. Then I will forgive their sin. And then I will heal their land.'" It's all about a renewal and a reviving. And that's what America needs on this 250th anniversary. That's what our families need. It's what our marriages need and our communities need.

We need God to do what only He can do. And I believe He still wants to do it today. See, I have a hope for this nation, not because politics can save us, not because of man's best efforts, but because God, He still responds today when His people humble themselves and they pray. If you've been to our nation's capital, then you know that the Washington Monument stands high above the rest of the city. The Washington Monument took nearly 40 years to build, and it's made up of over 36,000 massive marble blocks, each weighing over two tons. I thought about how every one of those blocks. box was laid intentionally throughout the years by different builders over the decades. And at the very top of that monument is the inscription, Laus Deo, which means praise be to God. Think about that. At the top of one of the most recognizable monuments in the world, over the most powerful city in the world, is the prayer, praise be to God. And that prayer, that declaration encapsulates the prayers of our founding fathers, these men who set out to build one nation under God. As I thought about that monument and all the hands that it took to build it, I couldn't help but wonder how many prayers have built our nation. Prayers from pilgrims on a boat, prayers of soldiers fighting in a field, the prayers of presidents and people from all walks of life. How many mothers have knelt beside the beds of their children and prayed for this country that their kids would grow up in? How many pastors have cried out for God for revival over our nation once again? And how many believers have gathered in churches like ours and asked to see the move of God

one more time in our country? How many people have carried this nation in prayer long before you and I were ever born? The truth is we'll never know, but what we do know is that every great move of God can be traced back to prayer. And our prayers, they don't have expiration dates. That means that when you pray in accordance to God's will for God's glory, all of heaven backs you up and God continues to answer those prayers long after you and I are gone. So it makes me ask, who is going to benefit from the prayers that we're praying today? Who is going to walk in freedom in the future because of the prayers that we're praying in the present? Could it be that in generations from now people will be standing in freedom and peace and revival that begins with prayers that we pray today? Maybe the prayers we whisper in secret will become the stones that future generations stand upon because history belongs to the prayer warriors, but so does the future. And as powerful as President Lincoln's prayer for our nation was back in 1863, our prayers today are just as powerful. Lincoln closed that prayer by saying this, all this being done in sincerity and truth, let us then rest humbly on the hope authorized by the divine teachings that the united cry of the nation will be heard on high. See, we can have hope for America today because God hears our united cry. He hears our prayers. Near the end of Abraham Lincoln's life, he said this, it's the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord. Today, we want to take some time to pray for our country, to dedicate it back to God on this 250th anniversary, and that begins by dedicating ourselves back to God individually. As it goes with you and me, so it goes with our nation. We will never be one nation under God until we are a people who live under God's authority and his rule in our lives.

So this prayer is personal as much as it is for our country. Remember the scripture in 2 Chronicles we looked at, it said, if my people will humble themselves and pray. I mentioned that that word humble means to bow low or on bended knee. It's a posture of surrender. It's a disposition of dependence. And today as we pray, I want to invite you, if you are physically able, to kneel at your seat as we pray. Now I realize it may be tight where you're seated and you might have to get up and move to find a seat that's open, but as we pray today, we want to humble ourselves and kneel before our Creator. We kneel to acknowledge our weakness, but to also acknowledge his strength. We kneel as a posture of humility and dependence. We bow low so that we can stand strong as one nation under God. So please take a moment, if you can, to kneel as we enter into this time of prayer together. Let's pray together today. Father God, we thank you for our nation, that you've blessed us to live in this country that has been built upon the principles of your Word and your truth. And Lord, as we gather on this week leading up to the 250th anniversary of this nation, we pray for your blessing to rest upon America. We pray that you would heal our land as your people pray and humble themselves, as we seek your face, as we turn from our ways that are wicked and follow your ways which are righteous and pure. We pray that we could be instrumental in helping our nation be a nation that is truly one nation under God. We pray for your favor and your kindness and your grace to rest upon this country once again. And we dedicate ourselves back to you and we dedicate this nation back to you. That we truly would be one nation whose heart is devoted to the kingship and the lordship of Jesus Christ. It's in your name that we pray and everybody together said, Amen.
