Well it's so good to see you today. My name is Pastor Sean I'm an associate pastor here at People's Church. Whether you're joining us online or in person I want you to know we're family. Well People's Church you're giving support so many missionaries and organizations who are reaching people for Jesus all around the world. In fact you're making it possible for people to hear about Jesus who may otherwise never hear. Check out this video update from our missionaries David and Donna Delp. After three decades of serving in pastoral leadership God put it on our hearts to pull up a lot of roots, leave 10 grandkids behind and go to Africa as missionaries. So it's our joy to work with leaders and launch teams and Africans in planting churches in the urban centers of Africa. We are David and Donna Delp and our ministry is Urban Tribes. Along with pastors and teams we plant churches in the urban centers of Africa. See Africa is changing. The village and the isolated areas are what people think of when they think of Africa but Africa is actually urbanizing faster than any other continent and the cities are exploding. The cities are the hub of economic development and they're the centers of influence for the entire continent. Our next project is planting and establishing a church in Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire on the Ivory Coast of West Africa, a city of six million people where the need is great. Yeah so folks right now we have a lead pastor and a launch team assembling. We cannot wait to see what God's going to do in Abidjan and in the many other places where we work and serve. So thank you People's Church because of your generosity and your partnership countless lives will be changed. Yes thanks so very much we appreciate you. Yeah thank you People's Church. Yeah come on let's give God praise for how he's using the Delps in Africa. Thank you. Thank you People's Church for giving generously so that more churches can be started in the urban centers of Africa. Your giving is truly changing lives. lives locally, nationally and around the world. God, we pray for our missionaries, David and Donna Delp and the incredible ministry they are leading in Africa. Lord, we pray that as they start more churches in the urban centers of Africa, that many people would come to know you that need the hope of Jesus. Lord, we pray that you would bless them and their ministry. Father, that 2026 would be a year marked by an incredible fruit and a harvest of souls like they've never seen before. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. Well, hello people of church. How are we doing today? You doing good? It's good to see you today. If I hadn't told you yet, happy blessed 2026 to you. It's going to be a great year. I don't care how your year has started. It's going to be a great year in Jesus name. Welcome to all of our locations. We're one church in multiple locations and we welcome all of our locations today in our online location as well. And we're beginning a brand new series today called Better Than Before. Better Than Before. Last year, I boarded an airplane at the Oklahoma City airport. After everyone boarded the airplane, we pulled back
from the gate and we were moving towards the runway. The plane stopped and the pilot announced we have to sit on the runway for 45 minutes due to a lack of air traffic controllers in Dallas. So after almost 45 minutes of waiting, he made another announcement that it would now be another hour until we can take off. Your friend, your pastor, your brother felt helpless because I could not get off the plane because we were no longer at the gate and I couldn't get off the plane because we weren't at our destination in Dallas. We were literally stuck in the in between. That's a lot like life. We all get stuck in between where we are and where we want to be. I've been in this place many times in my life. There was a horrible season in my marriage where Tiffany and I were stuck. We thought our marriage would never improve. I've been stuck in my parenting and I felt like I could never recover from my parenting mistakes. I've been stuck in so many areas of my life. Sometimes, honestly, I still get stuck. And today, some of you find yourself stuck. Your marriage is stuck. Your parenting is stuck. Your dating life is stuck. Your friendships, your career, your finances, your physical health is stuck. Some of you find yourself stuck spiritually. Today, you feel distant from your Heavenly Father. And if you were honest, some of you feel like your entire life is stuck. And at the start of this new year, you have dreams, but some of you feel like you could never see those dreams become a reality. And I have good news for you today. There is hope for you today because God's Word gives us answers. God's Word gives us the tools we need to get our lives unstuck. Our word of the year is key to getting unstuck. Today, I want to unveil the word of the year for People's Church that's going to change your 2026. It's not a popular word. It's not a cute word. It's not a fun word, but it's a life-changing word. Are you ready for it? Well, we've been leaking it out this past week at our 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting services. Here it goes. The word of the year is grow. Fifteen of you, glory. Grow. Everybody shout, grow. Some of you are like, I don't like that. That's not the word for me, Pastor. Let me help you right now. Just turn to your neighbor right now and tell them, you need to grow. Now, that felt good, didn't it? Come on, that felt really good. Like, you need to grow. I'm good, but I know you need to grow.
In 2026, you need to grow. Listen, throughout this series and throughout 2026, we are going to grow together. Let me tell you why this is so important. As you grow your life, your relationships, your career, your finances, your faith, your dreams are going to get unstuck and you're gonna start moving your life forward like never before. I talk to a lot of people. I'm talking about a lot of people. And most do not understand the steps to take to get their life unstuck. They have dreams and they hope those dreams will just somehow automatically happen. It's kind of like magic, shazam! My dream just came to pass. I wish this had worked. But whatever you're dreaming about, you don't just arrive there, you grow there. You don't just go there, you grow there. When you study the Bible, the living word of God, you see that people did not just arrive there, they grew there. Growth is what happens. It's what takes you from here to there. Growth. Samuel grew. First Samuel chapter two in verse 21 it says, the Lord was gracious to Hannah,
gave Hannah three sons and two daughters. And it also says the boy Samuel, the prophet, the little boy, he was gonna be a prophet. He grew up in the presence of the Lord. He grew in the presence of the Lord. First Samuel chapter two verse 26 says, and the boy continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and people. He grew to become a great prophet. I think about King David, the man after God's own heart. He grew, second Samuel chapter three, and verse number one talks about this war between the house of David and the house of Saul. And it said David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker. You can either grow stronger and stronger or weaker or weaker. Saul grew stronger and stronger at one point, but then he lost momentum and started to decline. Went backwards. Here's what you need to know about your life and my life. You're always growing. You're growing. You're either growing stronger or weaker. Samson grew. Judges chapter 13 verse 12 talks about his mom gave birth to this boy named Samson, and he grew, and the Lord, he grew, the Lord blessed him. John the Baptist grew. It talks about he was a child,
and he grew and became strong in spirit and lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel. He grew strong in spirit. He had to grow to become the great man of God. Even our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, grew, Luke chapter two verse 52. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man. Jesus grew before Jesus began his public ministry at 30. He was growing in wisdom and stature. Moving your life forward and seeing your dreams come to pass will only happen with growth. Getting unstuck and getting to the next step and the next season that God has for your life in 2026 will only happen with growth. Reaching your potential in 2026 will only happen through growth. As you read the scriptures, you cannot get away from how significant it is for you and I to grow. If you want to experience career advancement, you will have to grow. If you want to see your marriage turn around or go to the next level of connection and intimacy, you will have to grow. If you want to see a breakthrough in your dating or friendships, you will have to grow.
The financial breakthrough or health breakthrough that you're believing God for is on the other side of your growth. And here's the good news today. Growth is possible because growth is God's will for our life. Let me say that again. Growth is possible because growth is God's will for our life. When we make the decision to grow, we are working with God's plan for our life instead of working against God's plan for our life. Don't be one of those people. who deceives themselves into believing you can experience all of God's blessings without growth. Don't deceive yourself by believing your 2026 will be will be different and will look different than your 2025, than your 2024, then 2019, then 2010, then the 2000s. Come on somebody in the 1900s. It's insanity to step into 2026 and believe you can keep doing the same thing you've always done and get different results. You must grow because growth is God's will for your life. Let me show you scripture after scripture today as I lay a foundation for this series better than before. Let me lay a foundation to build on for the following weeks. Scripture after scripture has God's will for you and I to grow. 2nd Peter chapter 1 verse 8. The more you grow and we're going to look at the first seven verses in 2nd Peter chapter 1 but today let's focus on just verse 8. The more you grow like this, the more productive, you want to be productive and useful that you will be. You want to be productive and useful? You got to grow in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Colossians chapter 1 verse 9 and 10. For this reason since the day we heard about you we have not stopped praying for you Paul says. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through our wisdom and understanding that the
Spirit of God gives. He says why? So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way. How do we do this? Bearing fruit and every good work. Growing in the knowledge of God. 1st Peter chapter 2 verse 2. Like newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation. The Bible says we need to grow up in our salvation. It's God's will for you and I to grow up and to keep growing. It's God's will for us to grow and since it's God's will for us to grow what's the hang-up? Why are so many people not growing? There's obviously a hang-up that so many people are not growing up in their salvation. Let me quickly give you six hang-ups today. Six hang-ups of why people are not growing. The first hang-up is the hang-up of desire. The hang-up of desire. 1st Peter chapter 2 verse 2 says crave pure spiritual milk. When I was growing up I loved milk with little debbies. Come on somebody. With little debbies. Come on. I grew up in a little Debbie home. I loved me some little debbies growing up. Little Debbie was a relative in my house. She was an aunt. Aunt Debbie. Come on somebody. What's your favorite little Debbie? What's your favorite little Debbie? Come on, huh? Oatmeal cream pie. Lord, I remember eating them nutty buddies, that crunch. Look at that zebra cake. Glory to God. That's my girl right there, little Debbie. That zebra cake. While I'm fasting, all of them look good right now. Little Debbie. I also loved milk and cereal growing up. Mama always had cereal in the house. She'd buy some healthy cereal, like Raisin Bran and Total. I'm like, I'm 7. I don't want no Total. Oh, but I loved when she bought honeycombs, frosted flakes. But my favorite was when she brought Captain Crunch. My, my, my. That was Uncle Captain Crunch. Come on. Aunt Debbie and Uncle Captain Crunch. Even today, when I walk through the grocery aisle and see Captain Crunch and little Debbie, I crave them. Come up over here. The Bible says when it comes to our salvation, we should crave spiritual milk like I crave Captain Crunch and little Debbie's. We should crave more of God because salvation is not the ending point. It's the starting point. And some Christians are content with just barely getting into heaven. They have a stuck mentality instead of a growth mentality. They're stagnant. They're lukewarm. Spiritual growth requires
a hunger for God. God, I'm not satisfied. I want more of you. I want to grow I want to seek you with all of my heart and my prayer for you today is that you would have a desire to grow. Growth begins with a desire to crave more milk. Number two, the hang-up of grace. Some of you are not growing because you have a wrong understanding of grace. You think the grace of God means God does all the work. You believe if Jesus wants you to grow then you should automatically grow. You should automatically change. Do it Lord. Change me Lord. What a great message Lord. Grow me Lord. You believe grace means God does all the work but that's not correct theology on grace. You're saved by grace but then you must grow in grace. Both are a work of the Holy Spirit and both require your cooperation. Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8, for it is by grace you have been saved through faith and this not from yourselves it's a gift from God you are saved by grace. Notice through faith that's your part in Christ. This means you have to put your faith in Jesus and then you are saved by grace. The Holy Spirit will draw you to Jesus but nobody not even Jesus can make you put your faith in him. You have to confess with your own mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in your own heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and then you are saved by grace. You have to cooperate with the grace of God to be saved. Then after you put your faith in Christ you have to grow in the grace of God. Notice what it says in 2nd Peter chapter 3 and verse 18, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now forever amen. Salvation is the starting point not the ending point. You have to cooperate with the grace of God to grow in your faith. The Holy Spirit works in you and changes you as you cooperate with the grace of God. We have to do our part to grow. We have to put forth effort to grow. Grace doesn't mean God does everything for us. For some it's the hang-up of an over dependence on people. Some of you are not growing because you have an over reliance on people. You believe your spiritual growth is the pastor's job, the church's job, the teacher's job, the small group leader's job, or your friend's job. You think it's other people's responsibility for you to grow, but that's bad theology. Philippians
chapter 2 and verse 12 says, therefore my beloved you have always obeyed so now not only in my presence how much more my absence work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. You must work out your own salvation. That's not my job. That's not the campus pastor's job. That's not the youth pastor's job. That's not the small group leader's job. Your growth is your responsibility. Nobody can read the Bible for you. You have to read the Bible for yourself. Nobody can lift their hands and sing worship songs for you. You have to worship God for yourself. Nobody can live a holy life for you. You have to live holy yourself. Nobody can pray and fast for you. You have to put down the little debits, set the alarm clock, get up at 5 a.m., drive to church and be at the 6 a.m. prayer services. Nobody is going to do that for you. Some people never own their growth. They believe they can get all the spiritual nutrients they need by just coming to church once a week on Sunday. Or as statistics now say for many Christians today, they come to church one or two times a month. That's like believing you can get all the physical nutrients you need by eating once a week or every other week. To grow, you must own your growth. The scripture that we are studying in our 21 days of prayer and fast in Colossians chapter 2, verse 6 and 7, and now just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots, your roots grow, grow down into him and let your lives be built on him, then... Your faith will grow strong and the truth you were taught and you will overflow with thankfulness You growing deeper in Christ. It's not my job It's not the church's job. It's it's your job You must take ownership of your spiritual growth at People's Church We will always provide you with a spiritual growth plan But we can't do the plan for you if you don't follow the plan you can't turn around and blame me To my pastor you not deep. I'm I know you're not deep You got a Bible and you version you don't want not deep If you're not growing you're not following the spiritual growth plan Let me show you the spiritual growth plan get your pitch get your phone. I'll take a picture real quick
Take a picture. Take a picture. Take a picture. Just a quick spiritual growth plan yearly praying fast. That's not optional Like we all if you want to continue to grow you got a praying fast That's what Christians do that want to grow monthly tithe be a generous person. That's how we grow Weekly attend and serve at church. That's how we grow Just this just do the spiritual growth plan Weekly attend a small group find a group of believers to connect with and grow That's how we grow Daily spend time with God call it the first 15 give God the first 15 minutes of the day five minutes of prayer five minutes of worship five minutes of reading the Bible and you will grow I Can't do any of those For you, you have to own your own spiritual growth number four. Is this the hang-up of an underdependence on people? Some of you are not growing because you have an underdependence on people you think you can grow all by yourself You don't think you need the body of Christ to grow you think spiritual growth is all about biblical knowledge But knowledge alone won't grow your faith If all you have is a Bible knowledge without relationship with God's people you will grow in pride But not in God First Corinthians chapter 8 verse 1 says now about food sacrifice to idols. We know that we all possess knowledge but knowledge puffs up While love Builds up if all you get is more and more knowledge about God and the Bible I know the Greek another Hebrew. So they're a man. I got sick words I know the Bible versus the Old Testament New Testament Genesis. I got it. I got it. Mary Exodus live it. I know the Bible You're puffed up not built up You get built up when you love people Well, you need to be in community with other Christians to grow if you know a lot But don't do a lot with what you know, you're not growing in your faith most people are way more educated beyond their obedience and Then we get puffed up
instead of built up That's why the Bible talks over and over again About the necessity of living out your faith in community with other believers You cannot do all of the one another's in the New Testament without being with other Christians It's the one another's that calls us to grow when you read the New Testament It says it over and over again love one another serve one another honor one another forgive one another Accept one another encourage one another build up one another Admonish one another teach one another submit to one another be humbling one another be kind to one another Be compassionate to one another bear one another's burdens pray for one another confess your sins to one another Agree with one another be at peace with one another welcome one another greet one another So hospitality to one another to be the truth to one another and over and over again Do good to one another be devoted to one another. You can I grow all by yourself? Yourself That's why small groups are so important. It's part of our spiritual growth number five the hang-up of Self-centered living just real quick real quick growth happens when we serve others Matthew 23 verse 11 the greatest among you Jesus said will be your servant if you want to grow in greatness in 2026 in God's kingdom You must grow your servants heart Spiritual growth doesn't happen living for ourselves We unpack Luke chapter 9 verse 23 most of last year. It tells us that growth happens by dying to ourself We must die to ourselves and serve others to grow in our faith number six the hang-up of Distracted living I want to unpack for the next few moments Luke chapter 8 Starting with verse 11. We're gonna unpack several verses in a row Says this is the meaning of the parable the seed everybody shout seed the seed of the Word of God the Bible says the gospel is a seed and Some Christians see the seed of the gospel grow in their life while others see the seed of the gospel Wither away in their life. Why does the seed of the gospel not grow in people's lives?
Here's why because they get distracted distracted by the devil The devil steals the seed from some people look at the very next verse Luke 8 verse 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear the word then the devil comes And that dirty Joker snatches he takes away the word from their hearts So they may not believe and be saved the devil wants to steal Your seed and stop your spiritual growth Some it's because they're distracted by trials notice that very next verse Luke 8 verse 13 Some of the seed fell on rocket ground. Those are those who receive the word with joy. Whoo. They're excited. Whoo. I love Jesus When they hear the man, I love the Lord, but they have no root. They're not growing They believe for a while But in the time of testing they fall away trouble trials and the test of life stop people from growing Some of you are not growing because you are letting the test and trials of life push you away from Jesus we all go through trials and tests The question is our trials causing you to get closer to God. Are you allowing them to push you away from God? For some they're distracted by worries The very next verse says the seed that fell among Those They got caught with the worries and the word got choked because they were pursuing the riches and pleasures and notice what it says they They did not mature They stop I stop growing Some of you are not growing because you are worried and making money and having more pleasure in life You are pursued you're chasing money. You're chasing the pleasures of life instead of chasing God And what happens is you get distracted And you stop crawling How do we overcome these distractions and see the seed of the gospel grow in our life? How do we see the very next verse determined to grow? You got to be determined to grow determined to grow determined to grow notice the next verse Luke 8 verse 15 But the seed on good soul stands for those with a noble and good heart who hear the word
Retain it By persevering Produce a crop People who grow are not distracted. They're determined. They're not distracted They're determined to retain the word and to persevere in the Word of God one of the challenges I face as a pastor and preacher of the gospel is Knowing even as I teach God's Word today It won't produce any growth in some of your lives Your heart is not open to grow and I'm praying for you today You hear a lot message like this doesn't do anything for you I'm praying for God to soften your heart to the gospel I'm praying that this series will bring a spiritual breakthrough in your heart in your life So that you actually actually create because you don't even crave You say I'm young I'm good. I've known God for you. You don't even crave to grow And my prayers of God don't work So that the seed can grow because it's God's will for you to grow but the exciting thing as a pastor and as a preacher is I know that God's Word is falling on some good soil today and Some of you want to grow You have a spiritual hunger to grow you want to see 30, 60, 100 Fold of growth in your life in 2026. You want to see your dreams become a reality This is your year to grow You're determined to grow It'll be your best year ever if it's your best year spiritually father, thank you for your word today Thank you that the seed of the Word of God is falling on good ground today I thank you that the seed of the Word of God is Lord producing our spiritual hunger Lord.
