Good Friday Services

Good morning, men and women, what an awesome blessing it is just to be able to speak to you guys on the Pando app. It's an amazing piece of technology to have a tablet in the places that some of you are at and to be able to kind of retreat from the madness and go and just be able to hear God's Word, study God's Word, worship Him. I'm just so grateful for the technology that is in the correctional facilities and we're blessed to be able to speak to you because we consider you part of our church family here at Life Fellowship. I know we say that all the time, but we mean that. We pray for you. We think about how we can pour into your lives the stuff that we put on here, the things that we can do, and we're just so grateful for God and how He moves. My name is Logan Williams. My TDC number is 1490218. Four numbers after that, I've been rounding around the system, and so that's how I can really recognize the value of this. I didn't have a Pando or a tablet or anything like that when I was locked up, but I'm so glad that you guys do. I want to tell you guys to tell your friends and family, even though they're not locked up, that they can get that same app on their phone. It's got a lot of resources, a lot of churches post their services there. It's like everything is, boom, right there in one little hub. There's books, there's devotionals, there's the chosen, there's the Bible recap, there's lots and lots and lots of stuff that I personally have used and continue to use in my walk. Do that, man. Tell your friends and family, y'all can watch the same stuff and y'all can talk about it. When you see each other in visitation or when you talk on the phone, you can have spiritual discussions with your family, even though you're in the place that you're at. Don't ever fall victim to the lie that you can't spiritually lead your kids, even though you're in the place that you're at.

All things are possible with God. I want to encourage you guys. Man, I woke up this morning and I just, God placed a burden on my heart for a small group of you. I was just thinking of, I know there's 175,000 inmates in Texas. I know there's 190-ish of those inmates are on death row here in Texas. I think there's close to 1.5 million tablets online. Not all the correctional facilities have the tablets, not every single one of them in America, but I think there's a little over a million tablets online. So there's out of 1.5 million people on a percentage basis, okay, some of you are there and you shouldn't be there. There's some people probably statistically speaking, sitting on death row that didn't do it. There's maybe people that have really long sentences for something that they didn't do. And I don't know why God put a burden on my heart for you guys. Hopefully you haven't completely lost heart. Hopefully you're still watching, you're still seeking. Sometimes we don't understand and we don't know why things happen. If God's in control, why would he let these things happen, bad things happen to people? I'm not even going to begin to try to figure that out other than I know we live in a fallen world and bad things happen to good people. We live in a fallen world and good things happen to bad people. But for those of you who are there, maybe you have a super long sentence for something that the guy down the run maybe has a two-year sentence for. Maybe you got double, triple enhanced or something and they gave you, you took it to trial and they gave you life for something that this guy has got a five for. If you're feeling injustice like that, those are the people I want to speak to today. That's who God put on my heart today. And so I just want to read you guys some scriptures. Psalm 37, five and six says, commit your ways to the Lord, trust in him and he will do this.

He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn and vindication like the noonday sun. I know that sitting in the place that you're at, that's going to be a hard one to believe. That's going to be a hard one to wrap your mind around, but that is the word of God. And if you're having a hard time believing that, you need to ask yourself the question, and I had to settle it early on, right? Is the word of God truth, or is it not? That's what the word says. Psalm 9, 9 and 10, the Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. Again, another one that's gonna be difficult if you're sitting there right now with no hope, and it's for something that you didn't do. And as I read these scriptures, as I read them this morning, I just looked up a bunch of scriptures that would encourage some inmates who were in prison for something they didn't do. And as I read through them, it just became more and more apparent to me that a lot of this might not happen this side of heaven. So maybe we're gonna have to have a kingdom mindset, an eternal mindset, which we should have anyway, right? Like, this is not our home. Planet Earth is not our home. We're just passing through. Our life is but a vapor, right?

You ever see people vape? You know, they suck it in and blow that big cloud, man, it's pretty impressive, and then boom, it's gone. That's what the Bible says our life is. And so I'm not saying these ideas are easy to grasp and walk in, but I'm just telling you what it says. And, you know, look at Job, man. Righteous and upright, man. He says in chapter 22, verse 10, but he knows the way that I take. When he has tested me, I will come forth as gold. Job was the man. He was upright. He was righteous. I mean, I know we're all sinners, but according to the word, Job was top of the class as far as walking this thing out, okay? And he had some horrible, horrible, horrible things happen to him. But even he says, hey, man, I'm getting tested, but I'm gonna come forth as gold. First Peter 2, 19 says, for it is commendable if somebody bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscience of God. I think that's gonna be key for you to be conscience of God. Even though you're in the place where you're at, even though this is not the most ideal situation, we need to remain conscience of God.

That's what the word says. It says when they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate. When he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly, the just judge. And then, you know, I got to thinking about Joseph back in the Old Testament. You know, he was in prison for eight years unjustly. I mean, not only that, he got sold into slavery and then imprisoned. And before they threw him into slavery, they threw him in a pit, you know? That had to hurt, you know? Probably sprained an ankle, broke an arm, and then you're gonna be a slave, and then you're gonna be in prison, okay? But God then exalted him after he walked that out into the second most powerful man in the world. Joseph wanted to please God in whatever circumstance he was in. I'm sure he had moments where he was like, "'Come on, God, are you serious?' But he wanted to please God. Do you want to please God? Or are you still, and I'm only saying this because I can get like that. Are you still stuck in that self-pity when something happens to you that's not fair, that's not right?

You know, man, the enemy wants us stuck in that. And sometimes it feels good, man. Sometimes it feels good to just sit there and be a victim. But that's not what God would have for us. And so I just wanted to encourage all you guys that may have been in there for something you didn't do. Again, on a percentage basis. Some of you are. And so here's a few more scriptures. Psalm 27, 13, I remain confident of this. I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord, be strong and take heart. Wait for the Lord. You can see that word wait a lot. You see it all the time. Romans 8, 28, we know this one. We know that in all things, God works for the good for those who love him and have been according to his good purpose. So if it's not worked out yet, that means God's not done because he's always working for the good. And again, we might have to have the eternal mindset. It might not get worked out on this side of heaven, but we don't focus on what we can see. We focus on what the word says. Guys, this is not easy stuff to do. I know, this is not. But this is what we're gonna have to try to dig to and get our mind set on the spirit

when we're in these situations. James 1, 2, consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. You know, is it even possible to get to a place of considering it pure joy, if you're one of the people I'm talking to today? All things are possible with God. And I think maybe if I were in your shoes, I would have to just come to a realization that this is the boat I'm in. There's nothing I can do to change it. And so I'm gonna have to just chase after God with everything that I have, with everything that I have. You know, talking about things that aren't fair, things that are not just, you know, how about Christ? It's the ultimate example. He didn't just get put in prison for something he didn't do. He got tortured and shredded to death for our crimes, for our sins. You know, we can always fix our eyes on him. If we, we don't ever need to look any farther than Christ, if we wanna see somebody that had it worse than us, that got a worse deal than us. Guys, I'm not saying that the situation that you're in is easy or that it's gonna be simple to navigate, but I just wanna tell you that I love you, that I'm for you.

Just wanna encourage you not to give up. I wanna encourage you to fix your eyes on Christ, on God, on the only one that can bring peace and satisfaction and joy. And he can bring it out of any situation. My heart breaks for you guys, the ones that I'm talking to, it does. But I just wanted to recognize you and encourage you and tell you, man, there's people here praying for you at Life Fellowship, and we love you. Father, in the name of Jesus, I just lift up all my brothers and sisters that are listening today. God, I lift up all of them. We've all been in situations where things have happened to us that were not fair, that were not just, that no one has escaped that. But these particular men and women that I'm talking to today, God, I pray that you would just really chase after them, that you would grow tired and weary chasing after their heart, that you would wrap your loving arms around them in the midst of the circumstance that they're in and just let them know how much you love them. And that although we may not be able to explain or figure out how your ways are higher than our ways and why certain things happen, God, we can sit, we can wait, and we can experience your love. So God, would you love on them?

Would you let them know how much you love them? Would your peace just fall upon them right now? God, we thank you so much that you sent your son to die for us. And we thank you, Jesus, for going through what you went through for our sin, that you looked at us in our darkest moments and said, that's my beloved. He's worthy of dying for. And so Lord, we just thank you. We thank you for the app. We thank you for just the ability to speak into the lives of the inmates. And God, I pray that you would bless them to overflowing this week. In Jesus' name, amen. Whose house? God's house. Let's give him some praise. As the spike pierces through, it crushes the median nerve, sending a violent shock of pain up his arm. It's the kind of pain that shoots like electricity through the body, forcing muscles to tighten and convulse. His hand curls inwardly, involuntarily. And then the other arm is stretched out. Another nail, another crushing blow through flesh, tendon, and nerve. Both arms are now fixed to the cross. Then the feet.

They place one foot over the other. And the final nail is driven. threw them into the cross. Now every ounce of his body hangs on three wounds. Iron through bone, iron through nerves, iron through flesh. Every moment sends burning pain through his arms and legs. To even lift himself slightly, the nails tear against the tissue. To breathe, the nails carry the weight. And yet, he stays. Not because the nails were strong enough to hold the Son of God, but because his love was strong enough to keep him there. The nails went through his body, but they were meant for our sin. The precious fountain from Calvary's mountain. Flowing down to you and I. It washes us clean. Oh, what a mystery. That the red blood makes me wild. Isn't it wild? Doesn't it make you wonder why something so profound can be so simple? The blood, the blood, the blood. Oh, the wonderful blood. Your love, your love, your love. Oh, the marvelous love that's redeemed. Sing a song. Praises belong to the Son. The blood, the blood, the blood. Oh, the wonderful blood. My precious Jesus. Oh, I'm so thankful for the day you saved my life. As I remember, my heart grows tender. It's his blood to fill my eyes. Oh, isn't it wild? You, You are worthy God. Yes, You are. Yes, You are, Jesus. We remember, it's not just a story. It's not words on a page. You were beaten for me. You bled for me. We all cry, You are worthy God. You are worthy God. Yes, You are. Yes, You are. We remember, it's not just a story. It's not words on a page. You were beaten for me. You bled for me. We all cry, You are worthy God. It's a day we call Good Friday. Good day for us. Worst day ever for Him. Worst day. It's a heavy day.

It's really heavy. And really, the whole goal of today's service is to remember what Christ did for us on this cross. And for us to take a moment in the middle of the busyness of the life that we live and just slow down and realize that it was our shame, our sin placed Him on that cross. Reality is, there's more that happened on this day than I think any one of us will ever even realize this side of heaven. In fact, there's so much symbolism in the cross. Tonight, I want to share with you and I want you to ponder this. called the Four Wounds of the Cross. Like the Bible says in the book of Mark, it says, at noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three in the afternoon, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthan, which means, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why have you forsaken me? It's interesting to me that that darkness really didn't begin at noon on that Good Friday. It actually began thousands of years beforehand in a garden called Eden. When Jesus showed up on this earth, everything that he did was set around dispelling that darkness. And that darkness is really all around. I mean, just think about it. Every act of war, every betrayal, all the violence, our secret shame, every addiction, every broken life, every broken marriage, like all of it. It all stems from when humanity lost its wholeness.

And we've been living in the fallout ever since. Truth is, though, it wasn't just Adam. It was my sin. It was yours. It really was ours. I'll say it like this. The rebellion of the garden lives in all of us. What's interesting to me is that Adam in the garden, he walked towards, he walked towards a tree to take what was been forbidden from him. And yet we find the second Adam, Jesus Christ, he walked towards a different tree. Not to take, but to give. And it brings us to the very first wound of the cross. It's the pierced hands. Why his hands? I believe it's because our hands were a part of the first rebellion. I mean, they were instrumental. Without our hands, it would have never happened. The Bible says about Adam and Eve, it says that she took some and ate it and gave some to her husband. So like they reached for the forbidden, they reached for the fruit. And we have all been doing it ever since. I mean, we do it through pride and envy and greed. We clamor at all kinds of different, there's like this selfishness in humanity.

And it all is tethered back to what we find ourselves reaching for. And so his hands were, he was pierced. The hands that reached out and touched the lepers to heal them. The hands that broke bread and brought children close. The hands that protected the innocent and those that were disenfranchised and those that the religious elite of the day were attacking, trying to bring into public shame. Like it was those hands that they pierced. Theological historians would tell you that those Roman nails were seven inches long. And when they drove them into his hands, they put it right through the wrist. In the middle of your wrist, there's a nerve there called the median nerve. When it's pierced, it sends the most shocking, excruciating, tormenting pain that would cause a man to go mad in his mind. His hands were pierced to undo what our hands reached for. The second wound of the cross is the crown of thorns. And here's what's interesting about this one. Did you know that there were no thorns on this earth until after sin? It was only after darkness was allowed to come into this earth because of the decision of Adam and Eve. And God said this.

He said, cursed is the ground because of you. It will produce thorns and thistles. And yet on Good Friday, what is it that they crammed into the skull of Christ? It wasn't accidental. It was not random. The curse of Eden, the curse of the garden was being placed on the head of Christ. So what these soldiers would have done is they would have placed it there and they would have said, oh hail the king of the Jews. So powerful. Heaven knew exactly what was happening. The curse of the thorn was being transferred from mankind and it was being put on Christ. The Bible says that these men that crucified him, these Roman soldiers, history records that oftentimes they would wear these massive signet rings. So they blindfolded Jesus. And scripture says that they punched him in the face, one after another, after another. Then they mocked him. They said, hey prophet, come on prophet, tell us, come on big king, tell us which one of us just hit you. And he opened out his mouth. You talk about strength. You talk about resolve. You talk about power. He didn't say anything. He could have whispered a word. His heavenly father would have sent angels and rescued him out of it. He kept his mouth shut, kept his mouth shut. You know, when they placed that crown of thorns on his head, they tell us that it comes from the jujube plant. It's these plants that produce these thorns that are about two inches in length. They placed it on his head. And when they did, it was almost like this helmet of spikes. And to make sure that it did not fall off, they would take a staff, they would take kind of a king stick, and while it's on his head, they'd beat it into his brow. They pulled his beard out of his face. Think about that. And then they mocked him by spitting on him. He was dripping in spittle. He took the crown of thorns, the transference of the curse upon him instead of us. Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would have been so beaten so badly that he would have been recognizable as a human being. Him and his own mom wouldn't have been able to recognize who he was. Which brings us to the third wound of the cross, and that's the nailed feet. And everybody, I really don't want to be gruesome with you, but I'll tell you that historians tell us that when they did it, they

didn't just go through the top of the feet. They would have moved the feet sideways like this, and they would have gone through the heel of each one of the feet, crucifying him to the cross. You see, why the feet? It's because it was the very first promise that God spoke and gave after the fall. He said this in Genesis. He said, I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers, and he will crush your head. You will strike his heel. See, Satan was mocking God. He thought he was gonna stop the prophecy from being fulfilled. Satan didn't realize that what he was doing was actually fulfilling prophecy. They nailed the feet of our precious Lord into that cross. The feet that walked towards the sick and the lame. The feet of the one who walked on water, outran death at Lazarus's tomb. The feet of the one that stood strong when the demonic forces raged against him. He nailed his feet to a cross. When they did it, they made sure that there was a bend in his legs because the whole goal of crucifixion was not that you would die because of the blood loss or of the scourging and the pain it was that you would die from suffocation so they would take a cross like this they would crucify you and then they would lift you up and slam it down when it came down your shoulders would dislocate you would heave forward your lungs would collapse you would not be able to breathe and so the only way you could get a breath of air would be to push off of those nails that are in your heels to take that bloody exposed back slide it up that splintered cross to catch a breath just to become crashing back down he did it for six hours it was pierced not because of his transgressions it was pierced because of ours you know the Roman soldiers they even though they were professionals they had a hard time dealing with this and so if somebody was still alive after hours of agony they would walk up they would take a spear put it in between their legs and they would snap break their legs so that there would be nothing left to be able to push up off of and so person would slump down they would suffocate to death when they came to our Lord Jesus he had already passed so to make sure they took

a spear they slid it up underneath his ribcage and they punctured his heart which brings us to the fourth the fourth wound it's the pierced side and the scripture records that when they pierced his heart out of his heart flowed a mixture of blood and water you say why his side it's because exactly what happened in Adam's life the Bible says in Genesis then the Lord made Lord God made woman from the rib that he had taken out of the side of man and he brought her to the man watch this the first Adam slept and out of his side came his bride the second Adam his name is Jesus he didn't sleep instead he died and out of his side came his bride the blood is symbolic of forgiveness of our sins the water is symbolic of the fresh new birth that we can experience like he was pierced for you and for me I want you to think about this for a second think about how not just the physical torment that he experienced on the cross I want you to think about what was laid on him in one moment in time think about your sin just yours think about all the pain that your sin has caused in your own life and for the people that are all around you now think about the sin that's represented in this room think about the sin in the city of Dallas of nine million people how about the world past present future all of it in one moment was laid upon him on that cross see medical doctors will tell you that the only reason why a heart would have blood and water come out of it is if it ruptured which means this hear this today Jesus didn't die from the scourge and he didn't die from the torture he didn't die from the suffocation died from a broken heart for you there's a Christian mystic her name is Julian of Norwich she lived around 1300 AD she had this these 15 visions of Jesus and in one of the visions of the of the Lord Jesus told her he said if i could have suffered more for you i actually would have because my love for you was so great my love for you is greater and stronger than the pain of what i experienced i'm here to tell you today that if if he could have suffered more for you he would have because he loves you that much and it's every time at this year i get the opportunity to look at you and and to remind

you that jesus didn't just come to this earth to die on the cross to save you from your sins he was slaughtered he was slaughtered because of my sins my stupidity my envy my pride because of yours so all across this place i want you just to close your eyes and i want you just to sit in the reality for a moment of the fact that it was your sin it was yours that nailed him to the cross and i want you to be filled as you as you sit in that be filled with the incredible grace and the love of god even when we were enemies of the lord he stepped into your life and he paid the ultimate price and i will open up my heart and let the healer set me free i'm happy to be in the truth and i will daily lift my hands for i will always sing when your love came down i could sing of your love forever i could sing of your love forever i could sing of your love forever forever over the mountains and the sea your river runs with love for me and i will open up my heart and let tequila set me free i'm happy to be in the truth and i will daily lift my hands for i will always sing when your love came down i could sing of your love forever i could sing of your love forever i could sing of your love forever and i could sing of your love forever and i could sing of your love forever i could sing of your love forever i could sing of your love forever i could sing of your love forever thank you for your love Holy is the Lord Holy is the Lord Holy is the Lord Holy is the Lord

Holy is the Lord So holy Holy is the Lord If you did not get one, please just lift your hand. Those of you in the correctional facilities, those of you that are at home, I want you to, if you can, find some kind of juice, some kind of cracker. We're going to receive this together. There's a concept in theology called transubstantiation. And it simply means this. It means that when we get ready to receive of this bread and we eat it, and when we drink this juice, it's not just juice and bread. That something very special and holy happens when we come together as Christ followers. And that the very essence, the personhood of Jesus, steps into the place, the room, the gathering where we're at. I think sometimes we have cheapened what actually happens when we receive of the Eucharist in a moment like this. Something very special, very holy is about to happen. So come on, take that bread if you would. Realize that Jesus is in this place. His body was broken for you. Come on, break that bread. So that you could be healed in your emotions, your body. And with holy reverence, come on, let's all eat of the bread together. Come on, let's do so. And the juice, if we could. And before you drink of this juice, I want you just to whisper something underneath your breath. And I'm gonna release you to do it in just a second. I just want you to say,

Lord, I know you love me. No matter what. That's all I'm gonna ask you to say. Just whisper that underneath your breath. And then let's drink of the juice together. Come on, let's do it right now. Amen. The Bible says in the book of John, chapter 19, that Jesus knew that his mission was now finished. And to fulfill scripture, he said, I am thirsty. I'm thirsty. And a jar of sour wine was sitting there. So they soaked a sponge in it and they put it on a hyssop branch. And held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, it is finished. Bowed his head and he gave up his spirit. Tonight, before you're dismissed on your chair is a little blank card. I'm gonna ask you to take that card out and grab it. of a pen that's in that front seat back pocket, of course. And I want you to write a note to the Lord. Maybe it's a prayer, maybe it's a note of love. Maybe it's regrets of your past that you just want to give to Jesus once and forever and for all. I don't know what you're gonna write on that, but it's something personal, it's private, it's between you and God. And so I'm gonna ask you, don't rush out of this place. Just breathe in this atmosphere because he's here. When you feel like you're done,

you're gonna be dismissed in complete silence. There's a cross that's in the lobby, and if you feel comfortable, you can even fold that thing up, and I want you to put it to that cross. Now give it to the Lord. There's a number of you, this last year has been tough. There's things that you've walked through, pain, anxiety, fear. There's been all kinds of turmoil that has come your way, and this is a moment. Put it in the hands of a great God that sees you and loves you.
