Good Friday | Shoreline Church | 2026 | Full Service
A Roman soldier watched Jesus die and said, *“Surely this man was the Son of God.”*
He didn’t need the resurrection to believe—the cross was enough.
---
* A man who wasn’t a follower recognizes Jesus
* He sees something different in how Jesus dies
* He goes from watching… to believing… to declaring
---
What he witnessed:
* Jesus forgave instead of fighting
* Creation itself responded—darkness and shaking
* The veil was torn—no more separation between God and people
---
The Message of Good Friday:
Because of the cross, the way to God is open.
No matter your past, you are invited in.

He was humbled as a lamb who were peering in the flesh. Seeing the world He loved, even on a Roman cross He was obedient to death. You're the name above all names. Holy blood was spilled on the cross of Calvary's hill. He broke the curse of Adam's sin. He locked him in a grave. But He put His boast to shame. He tore the grip and rose again. You're the name above all names. High and lifted up. He ascended far above the storm. Heaven rules the earth. He's the King of all kings. We forgive Him the name that only He deserves. You're the name above all names. You're the name above all names. All the glory, the power, and the praise. You're the name above all names. Oh. It's only so long Babylon can stand. Only so long that the King rides in. Every knee will bow before. Every tongue confess that He is Lord. It's only so long Babylon can stand. Only so long till the King rides in. Every knee will bow before. Every tongue confess that He is Lord. He's coming with fire burning in His eyes. Coming with the power to split the skies. Every knee will bow before.
Every tongue confess that He is Lord. We'll see it with a sword coming from His mouth. Armageddon's armies will be cut down. Every knee will bow before Jesus. You're the name above all names. You're the name above all names. All the glory, the power, and praise. You're the name above all names. It's only so long Babylon can stand. Only so long till the King rides in. Every knee will bow before. Every tongue confess that He is Lord. Only so long Babylon can stand. Only so long till the King rides in. Every knee will bow before Jesus. How can one describe such a day? The wrongdoing of all humanity putting to an end an innocent man. The Son of God. This is the story of Jesus death by way of a cross. All in one moment bringing death to the bright light of our future. He never stopped loving us and yet this is the incredible part of it. Our sin stopped his heart.
Our sin drove the nails firmly in the hands of God. All along these were the plans. We told ourselves that we were in control and this was deemed sufficient for all of us. The brutal beating, the inhuman flogging, the naked humiliation. Heaven watched and saw it all. Our rebellion, our guilt, our shame, erasing the very notion of reconciling us with God. Our sin and our debt overcoming Jesus. Here is our King, obliterated. The enemy laughing, his plans unstoppable. There's no longer the sound of freedom rising. Now God's people are utterly broken. Behold the chains of mortality. Yes, this is what is true. We had heard the stories of old. The lost are found. The blind can see. The weak are made strong. But now we are witnesses to this reality. God is dead. We'd almost believed there is a way of redemption. There is a life of fulfillment. There is a peace beyond understanding. Now we know better. For us, we can say that God is encapsulated in this one realization. The single greatest sacrifice in human history is finished. How clearly we can see it. So what's so good about Good Friday? Just one thing. That the blood of Jesus can reverse the curse of sin and raise the dead to life.

The bright light of our future all in one moment, bringing death to death by way of a cross. This is the story of Jesus, the Son of God, an innocent man putting to an end the wrongdoing of all humanity. How can one describe such a day? Good Friday. Welcome, everyone. If that doesn't move you, I don't know what will. We want to welcome especially all of those that are here for the very first time tonight, and so if you are, we want to let you know that you can let us know that this is your first time. You can scan the QR code that's on your armrest or fill out the guest card that's in the seat pocket in front of you. We're not going to pass any buckets here tonight, either for the guest cards or for the offering, but if you want to fill out that information, you can take that guest card to our black boxes that are at each exit, and if you want to worship the Lord with your giving, you can do that by scanning that QR code or taking the tithe envelope and using those same black boxes. They're there for you. There's not a single story in the Bible that's an accident. Every single story has a purpose, and this particular story that we're going to share tonight, God wanted recorded in his word for every single one of us. It's found in a single verse, Mark chapter 15 and verse 39, and when the centurion who stood there in front of Jesus saw how he died, he said, surely this man was the son of God. He was the first post-crucifixion witness to the divinity of Jesus, and do you know what I find really interesting? Is that he made that declaration without the support of the resurrection. It was before he rose from the dead. He just saw the crucifixion, and that was enough for him.
He made that declaration being an adversary. It wasn't like he was Jesus's friend. He was the one with his fellow soldiers that put Jesus on the cross and nailed his hands and feet, and he made that declaration most likely never having met Jesus before. There's no recorded scripture that makes a connection. He wasn't there on the side of a mountain with the sermon that Jesus preached, blessed are the poor in spirit. He most likely wasn't in the crowd when Jesus took just two small fish and some loaves of bread and fed the 5,000. He certainly wasn't in the boat when he walked on the water and calmed the storms. This verse does not say after careful consideration of all of the things that he heard Jesus teach and all of the miracles that he saw, he came to the conclusion that he was the son of God. That's not what the verse says. The verse says, it's when he saw how he died, that's what moved him. Perhaps it was the response of Jesus from the cross. This centurion, I'm sure, witnessed many crucifixions, so he knew how it would end. The bitterness, the anger, the pleading, the begging, but that's not what he saw in this crucifixion. Jesus was different. He forgave his executioners. He cared for his mother. He went out with a cry of victory, not a whimper of defeat.
The Bible records that there were seven phrases that Jesus spoke from the cross, every single one of them having magnificent impact. Father, forgive them, he cried. Do you know what blows me away? Is that no one even asked for that forgiveness. Jesus was more willing to forgive than we are to be forgiven. He turned to a thief hanging next to him. Today you will be with me in paradise, and what is unbelievable about that is that there was nothing that this thief could do to earn a single thing. He would never be able to prove his sincerity. All he could do is receive. Woman, behold your son, Jesus from the cross looking after his family to send us the message that family is always important. Jesus cried out, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me so we could cry out,
my God, my God, why have you accepted me? He cried, I thirst so that our thirst would be quenched. He cried out, it is finished, so we would know that the work has been totally done. Into your hands I commit my spirit so we could surrender our lives as well. It took someone who was very familiar wielding worldly powers to recognize that there was something happening at the cross, a power that was not of this world. Perhaps it was the response of Jesus from the cross, or maybe it was the protest of nature, the one who created nature, the one who commanded nature, peace be still, and now nature is almost protesting on its own, and the earth quaked, and rocks split, and the sun goes dark for three hours implying a significant thunderstorm. Creation itself is protesting the death of her author. The centurion knew that something supernatural was happening,
and then there was the tearing of the veil. Scholars say that the sound of the tearing of the veil would have been so deafening that everyone in all of Jerusalem would have heard it. That veil was 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide and four inches thick, and it weighed 8,000 pounds. 300 men were required to hang it. God's infinite compassion and brilliant holiness on one side of the temple sends scarred humanity on the other side of the temple and a veil separating them. There's some things you need to know about the tearing of that veil. God himself did it. It didn't just happen by itself. It wasn't a coincidence. God initiated it. It was his idea. He wanted no more separation. You know that longing that each and every one of us feel for God? Well, that longing is even multiplied by infinity, his longing for us.
He tore that veil. And it was the first thing he did. Matthew 27 verse 50. And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. And at that moment, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. At that moment. And I love that. The very first thing that happened when Jesus breathed his last breath is that the veil was torn from top to bottom. It's almost as if God had his hands on the veil and he's looking back at the cross and he's seeing Jesus and he's got his fifth breath and then fourth and then the third and then the second and then the very last breath he's going to breathe. And God is looking back at the cross and as soon as he breathed his last, the very first thing God does is he rips that veil of separation. He didn't wait a second. He didn't get around to it later in the week. He didn't have a conference with the angels and say, you know, when should we take care of that? God was not preoccupied with other issues. There was nothing more important to God than removing the barrier. Let the love that brought so much excitement to the heart of God fill your heart tonight.
And notice when he tore that veil, he didn't just tear a little corner. He didn't just make a little hole as if to say that those whose sins are not all that significant can make their way through. No, he tore it from top to bottom so that no matter what you've done, no matter where you've been in your life, no matter how often you have failed, there is room for you. We think that heaven is for those who are not too bad, the pretty good types, but the real message of Good Friday is that heaven is for every single one of us. And I don't care how you came to church tonight. You may be tempted to think that there's no hope for you, that you've messed up too bad, but I'm here to tell you the veil was not torn just a little corner, but from top to bottom. And one more thing to notice. He didn't unhook it. He didn't take it down. He didn't send it to the dry cleaners. He didn't spray on Febreze and iron it and fold it and carefully put it away as if to say that maybe someday in the future, I'll cart it out again and rehang it. Someday in the future, I'll cart it out again and rehang it. No, he destroyed that veil forever. No more separation ever.
The veil will always be torn, whether it is day or night, whether your faith is strong or weak, whether you've made good decisions or bad decisions, whether your heart is filled with optimism or you're ready to give up all hope, whether you feel holy or unworthy, you need to know the veil is forever torn. But the veil being torn doesn't do us much good if we're not willing to enter in, if we're not willing to receive. The first witness to the crucifixion, the first witness to the divinity of Jesus happened after the crucifixion, but before the resurrection. It happened on a night like tonight. It happened on Good Friday. And the one who made that declaration was an adversary, not a friend. He was not a follower. He was not a disciple. He was not someone who heard Jesus teach or saw his miracles performed. It was not somebody who even had a personal transformation or an interaction with Jesus that changed his life. Not someone who grew up in the temple or went to Sunday school. And it was treasonous to make the statement he made. And he recorded it and said it loud enough so people heard it and it made its way into the Bible. And that night he stopped being a soldier and a guard and he became a witness. He went from just watching to truly seeing, to believing, to declaring.
And he did it with only half the story, only half the story. We know the full story. So how much more should we tonight not be content with just observing or just attending? Could you be courageous enough to allow the Holy Spirit to move in your heart so you truly see and believe and give him your all? Because that's the only reasonable response to what this night is all about. Let's pray. Father, I thank you so much for every single person here, Lord. The littles that are making their presence known, Father, we thank you for their lives. We thank you for the journey they're on. Father, we thank you for every young person, every person in middle school and elementary school, high school, college, our young adults, our married couples, our single folks, Lord, all of us gathered together here tonight to mark this unbelievable, incredible event in human history. Father, I pray that you would help each and every one of us to make the journey from observing to truly seeing, from truly seeing to truly believing, and from truly believing to surrendering it all to you. In Jesus' name, amen. When I was lost and all alone, your presence was where I found home. You were there and you're here right now. In every high and every low, you never left me without hope. He was an aggressor. He opposed everything that Jesus stood for. And yet, in his death, in the brokenness and the pain and the suffering of the cross,
something happened. He went from being an adversary to being a witness. And maybe tonight, in your life, you're not quite sure where you are in that journey. Maybe tonight, in your life, you're witnessing some pain and some difficulty and some hurt. Maybe your reality isn't all rosy and perfect. an ease, an Easter eggs. Maybe your reality is a tough one, is a hard one, is a difficult one right now. And maybe you're witnessing death and suffering and brokenness. Paul wrote sometime after this and he was experiencing death. He was being persecuted and flogged and broken and whooped and left for dead and shipwrecked for the gospel. And he writes this in 2 Corinthians 4, and verse 10, he says, we always carry around in our body the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. That word revealed means to make manifest. We carry the death so that we might manifest the life. We're about to partake of communion. Today is Friday. And the reality is that Sunday is coming. Today, we are celebrating the death. But on Sunday, we will manifest the life. And what I love about communion is exactly that. This moment of communion, Corinthians tells us, is the body that was broken for us. And every time we partake of it, 1 Corinthians says, we proclaim His death. His death on a cross.
And every time we partake of the wine, which is His blood, which was spilled for us, we proclaim His death. So that His life might be manifested through us. So tonight, wherever you're at, whatever your life experience is like right now, whatever suffering you might be going through, or however the brokenness of this world is manifesting itself upon your life, may you tonight proclaim His death so that His life might be manifested through you. Amen. Amen. I wanna invite you to take a moment to partake of this. So at the, in the corridors in the back, there are tables set up with communion, and there are people ready there to serve you with the bread that represents His body, and the juice that represents His blood that was spilled for you. So I wanna encourage you to take some time, you're welcome to take a moment to continue to worship, and when you feel ready to go out to the tables where they will serve you, and then just to return back to your seat where we will continue to worship in a moment. ♪♪ ♪♪

Oh my goodness, can you believe our good fortune that He washed our sins white as snow and took care of so many things on that cross? Wow. Oh my goodness. What a day to reflect on what Jesus has done for us, really. You know, this morning I woke up and very first thing, there was a text from Casey, my friend, sending a song about how the blood of Jesus is what this day is all about. And I listened to it and I just started soaking in that. Her heart was so touched by that song, she sent it to us. And then a few hours later I was connecting with some other friends of mine just talking about how what Jesus has done for us has changed everything. I mean, through all the tragedies, all the heartaches, all the pain, all the difficulties in life, that our lives are still vibrant and alive and well and healed and whole and free and all the things that, I mean, it's like a miracle of God's mercy on this day what happened. Just reflecting on that, another friend sent me a little video clip, and she said this spoke to my heart, and it was by that guy who plays Jesus in The Chosen, you know, so you kind of got to listen and stuff. And so, he was like talking about how we don't need to turn away from the pain of Jesus. We need to look at smack dab in the middle, be right there, accept his suffering, because if we didn't, we would all be a mess, we would all be a wreck. Just the things that were speaking to people in my life's heart, it was just so beautiful.
And then I ended up for a couple hours over at my mom and dad's house, and you know, they're 88 and 91, and my mom, you know, she just needed help, stuff, we got an Easter egg kind of over there in the morning, you know, and all the things. So then she was like, could you paint my toenails? And I was like, okay. So I was down there, I was painting her toenails, she just began to weep, and she was thanking me, and she said, you know, this morning I woke up, and I just felt like the Holy Spirit wanted me to just reverence and worship God today, and so I have been all day. And I thought, what a beautiful example. I mean, just every person it seemed like I was interacting with was reflective and thinking about this day, and that's what it boils down to, is how will we respond to this incredible gift that God has given to us in sending His Son Jesus to die for us? What will we do? So Father, tonight, God, as we are just about wrapped up, God, we're asking that You would help us to, throughout the rest of this weekend, really take a moment and reflect, if we haven't already done it, God, that You would continue to speak to our hearts, Father, that You would help us to apply, God, the blood of Jesus, Father, taking all that He did for us, and Father, really letting it affect our lives, God, for Your purposes and glory, God, to bring healing and wholeness and freedom, Father, to bring peace and calmness to our anxious hearts, Lord, to take care of needs that seem insurmountable, Father, we're asking tonight, God, that You would help us to apply the blood of Jesus in everything that it means for us, to our lives, in Jesus' name, amen, amen. Here's your King crucified See the nails in His hands See the wounds in His side See the crowd meant to mock But instead prophesied That it was Not the end. Wipe the tears from your eyes. Don't forget that he said on the third he would rise. Thank you.
