All right, hello, City First, how's everybody doing today? I say on behalf of Jen and myself, we're so glad that you are here, all the locations, and everybody joining us even at home at City First Anywhere and at God Behind Bars. We're so grateful. And today we begin a brand new series called Gold in the Ground, Gold in the Ground. And the topic of this month is simple. We are focusing on discovering the life that God has planned for you and I and seeing His dreams become a reality in our lives. Now, I prayerfully thought up this series months and months and months ago. And I'll tell you how I kind of came to the conclusion to like focus on this for the month of October. I was watching so many heavy, depressing things happening in our culture and in our world. And it was impacting not just people outside of faith, but people who are also believers and in faith. I mean, there's wars and rumors of wars. There's depression, anxiety, hatred, a lot of division, emptiness. There's all kinds of this going on. And I will tell you, I felt like the Lord put upon my heart this thought. It was like it welled up inside of me. And I thought to myself, and I think it was from God, we can either live at the level of culture or we can live at the level of God's purpose.

What do you want to do, City First? Do you want to live with this one and only life that we've all been given at the level of the dysfunction of this world? Or do you want to live a life that is more abundant, a life that has God's plan and purpose at the center of it? And that was really the genesis of this series. It was almost kind of like, pardon me, I got a little frustrated, a little kind of like that holy anger kind of thing going on, where I was just like, God darn it, I'm so sick of living in the news cycle. I want to live above all of the storm that's raging in our culture. I want to live this one and only life because we don't get a mulligan here. I want to live it full of purpose. I want it to be John 10, 10, like Jesus said, life and life to the fullest. And yes, we battle through challenges. And yes, we have heartaches and sickness and setbacks and sin and brokenness, but this is what the Bible says. And it says this in Romans chapter eight. For if God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own son, but gave him up for us all, won't he also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one.

For God himself has given us right standing with himself. That's called righteousness. Who then will condemn us? No one. For Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us. And he is sitting in the place of honor at God's right hand, pleading for us. Can anything ever separate us from Christ's love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity or are persecuted or hungry or destitute or in danger or threatened with death? No. Despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loved us. I am convinced that nothing can separate us from God's love. Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor demons, neither our fears for today, nor our worries about tomorrow. Not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love. I love that. No power in the sky above or the earth below, indeed nothing in all creation, will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Give a huge round of applause if you agree with that verse, right? That's the genesis of this series. We can live a life that is centered in God's unfailing love for us, which causes us to have a different perspective on the culture around us in the world we live in.

We can have an abundant life. I believe that with all my heart, that there is gold in the ground per se, but it is going to require effort to dig it up. It's going to require prayer. It's going to require focus to live a life that is an abundant life. to get the spiritual gold, you could say, the life that is worth living. And this series is actually extra special because we have created extra content that only the life groups are gonna be able to see. I have filmed four powerful teachings that is just for life groups. because I want you to discover the powerful message of this series, which means that you can live a life full of God's purpose and His dream for you. So the very first message of the first week of this series that I wanna talk about is about one of the shortest parables that Jesus ever taught. Now, a parable is a story that has a real meaning. It actually has multiple meanings. In fact, Jesus would tell stories and in a sense, tease out life's principles or meanings in these stories. This parable is so short, it is literally one verse. One verse. I've never preached entirely on this parable. And I'm gonna do this today. I'm gonna preach a message on literally a one verse story. Here it is. Matthew chapter 13, verse 44. Jesus said, the kingdom of heaven is like a hidden treasure in a field which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys the field. That is the story. That is the parable. And inside of this story, this one verse story that Jesus teaches, there is a whole wealth of knowledge that we can learn from today in 2025.

The number one topic or theme that Jesus preached on in his ministry years was the kingdom of God. More than anything else, more than teaching about love, more than teaching about holiness, more than teaching about any of these other things that are very important, the number one thing that he taught about is he taught about the kingdom of God, also described as the kingdom of heaven. And it's something that, honestly, you and I should understand it as Christians. And here's the reason why. If it was Jesus's number one topic, then I think we should have a general knowledge of what the kingdom of God is. So let's start with this first, all right? The kingdom of God can simply be explained this way. It is God's people in God's place under God's rule. You say, what's the kingdom of God? Well, it's God's people, you and I, in God's place, meaning right now, underneath God's authority or his rule. In other words, if you are a Christian, to live in God's kingdom means allowing his authority and his commandments to shape your life right where you're at today. That's what it means to live in the kingdom. It means he's in charge, he's king, which means you're not. It means that he's the leader of your life,

which means you're not. Years ago, when my two oldest boys were younger, they're only 20 months apart, but Caden, who was the first born, would always boss his younger brother, Connor, around. Always. I would hear them in the other room, in the living room, they'd be playing, and you know what? I would hear it, and Caden would be barking out commands to Connor all the time. And I could tell Connor was getting frustrated just from hearing the tone of his voice. And finally, Connor would yell out, you are not the boss of me. And you know what? I thought about that this week, and I thought, that's the human problem. The human heart wants to do its own thing and basically say to God, you're not the boss of me. The human heart wants to be in charge. The human heart wants to develop my truth. and my way of living. In fact, I even think that saying my truth that has become very popular in the last five years is the epitome of a narcissistic kind of lifestyle that says, I'm the one in charge. If there's a God, it doesn't matter. I'm the one calling the shots. You see, Jesus is basically saying in this parable

that living a life with God in charge, not you in charge, is like a man who finds treasure in a field. And that man takes and goes back and sells everything he has. And he takes the money from the sale of everything he has, and he buys the field so that he can own the treasure that's buried in the field. What would you do if you discovered that there was a plot of land, a field right outside town right now, and you discovered that that field right underneath the surface, there are tons of gold waiting to be discovered and excavated, tons. Would you go back home and start calculating everything that you have because you learned also that this field was for sale? And you started to add up, okay, let's see. How much could I sell my house for? How much could I sell my car? How much could I sell my iPhone on Facebook Marketplace? How much is in my savings account? How much money could I pull off my credit cards? Even though Dave Ramsey would say, no, no, no. But guess what? You're like, if I could just get enough money, if I could sell everything I have, I would have just enough money to buy this field because you knew that if you bought the field, you would have also ownership to the gold

that's right underneath the ground. Would you do it? Of course you would. I mean, you wouldn't hang on to your janky Toyota Corolla and give up millions and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gold, right? Jesus is saying this. He's saying living with God in charge of your life is worth giving up everything in your existing life. Everything you presently have, whatever you have, your accomplishments, your money, your reputation, your vices, your pleasures, your lusts, your material items, your selfish dreams, your desires, none of that is worth what you would be getting. None of it can compare to the treasure of a life with God in charge and all the benefits that he brings. And the apostle Paul, who wrote the majority of the letters in the New Testament, he understood this. You got to understand the apostle Paul was highly educated. He was educated at like the best institution in the land by the best professor you could say. He had authority. He had power. The Bible says that they would lay their coats. Men would lay their coats at his feet. In other words, that was a way back then of saying you're in charge. But then Paul met Jesus and he was willing to give everything up for Jesus. And this is what he writes in Philippians chapter three.

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless. Everybody say worthless. One, two, three. Worthless. All the stuff, all the things that he thought was gonna bring him happiness and the good life, he now sees as worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord. For his sake, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage. Everybody say garbage. One, two, three. Garbage. Garbage, he says, so that I could gain Christ. I mean, Paul is going, everything that I thought was important, that was gonna fill me up and give me the life that I wanted, I now consider as worthless garbage compared to knowing Jesus. Imagine if like after service today, I'd meet you in the foyer of the auditorium or for those of you watching online right now, I'd come knock on the door of your house and come into your living room. room and I say, Hey, I got an offer for you. Um, why don't I take you to one of the best restaurants in the nation? Let's go to like New York city and we'll go to Lee, uh, Bernardin, which is a French restaurant. It has, it's a three Michelin star restaurants, the highest

rating you could get year over year. It's considered one of the best restaurants, not just in America, but actually in the world. And, and, and I'd say this to you, I'd say, let's go there and, and you can order anything you want. It is on me. All right. And so we met there, we got dressed up because you got to kind of dress up to go there. And we sat down at a table and, and they handed us a menu and I looked at you and I said, Hey, listen, anything you want, it's on me. And we peruse the menu. And then all of a sudden you abruptly stood up and you said, you know what, Jer, I appreciate this offer so much and bringing me to this very nice restaurant, but you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to actually leave the restaurant. I'm going to go three boxes down. I'm going to go to a back alley and get in a dumpster and see if there's any food there. How absurd would that be? Even as I tell that story, that analogy, you're like, that's a dumb story. Why would I ever do that? Exactly. Why would you leave the best restaurant in the nation to go rummage into a dumpster three blocks down the road? Why would you ever do that? And yet many times we think living our lives under our own rule with my truth, chasing after my dreams, living the way I selfishly want to live, chasing my lust and obsessions that will bring me more happiness than having a relationship with the one that created me and living my life according to his plan. The whole time God is offering us a five course amazing meal. You could say with this life, and we keep on wanting to go back to the dumpster of our own way of living, saying it's going to bring us happiness and nourishment and satisfaction to our soul. God created us. He knows the best way that we are to live. He wants to be in charge and putting him in charge is not a drudgery. It's not something that makes us less than it actually makes us more than what we could ever do on our own. You know, trading God, our sinful, broken nature, selfishness, and instead getting back a life of forgiveness and grace and purpose and strength and eternity in heaven. It is the best trade possible. It is too rich of an offer to refuse. And the Bible says this in Psalms, it says, taste and see that the Lord is good. Let's get out of the dumpster. Let's walk into the presence of God and taste and see that the Lord is good. Notice what the man in the parable that Jesus describes, notice what he does. It says, then in his, what's that word? Joy in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has in his joy. It's not like arm twisting. Oh, I'm going to sell everything. No, no, it isn't

reluctant. It's not begrudgingly. He sells it. He is so excited to give up everything that he has the life that he has to gain what he really wants, the field that has treasure. Frederick Nietzsche, some people pronounce it Nietzsche believed that Christianity was only for people who were poor, desperate, and unintelligent. That's what he believed. He was an atheist grew up in Germany many years ago, and he wrote books about it. He basically said Christianity is only for the poor, the desperate, and the uneducated. However, he has been proven wrong in my estimation, or the last two millennia, both poor and rich have gladly traded their lives for the kingdom of heaven. Kings and vagabonds, educated and uneducated men, women, and children of all nations and all races. Why? Why? Because billions of people have discovered there's gold in the ground that they decided to give. give up their life of a relentless pursuit of unhappiness that really isn't attainable, and instead trade it for treasure that God gives. They've given up their fruitless striving to be fulfilled, and instead have said, Jesus, fill my life with your purpose. They've given up the endless struggle to find the good life through material goods or accomplishments, and they traded it for a kingdom that is good, that is ran by a God that is good, and he gives us real life. They have by the billions, joyfully said, Jesus, take this old life you're in charge. Forgive me of my sin and my shortcoming. I want to live your kind of life. So how do you receive this kingdom? How do you receive the kingdom of God? Well, you can't buy it, all right? Don't look at this one verse parable and read it literally that you have to go sell everything you have to buy it.

You can't buy the kingdom. You cannot buy this thing I'm talking about. You don't have enough money. Whether you have a dollar or a billion dollars, you cannot buy it. That is not the point of Jesus's message. What Jesus is saying is this, is the man is willing to give up everything for the treasure of living with God in charge. Here's the way that you get the kingdom of God. You ready? Here it is, ready? You want it. Can't buy it, can't earn it, you want it. You say, well, what do you mean by it? That's it. If you want the kingdom of God, you want it. You want it more than what you currently have. You want it supremely. You want it more that you crave after it. You say, you know what? I don't want this life. I want a new life. You say, I'm willing to give up the current life and receive Jesus's new life for me. You know what the Bible says in Luke 12? I love this. It says, for it gives your father, capital F, meaning God, great happiness to give you the kingdom. You want it?

He'll give it to you. That's it. You want it? He'll give it to you. You can't earn it. You can't be good enough. You can't give enough money to the church. You can't go to church enough. None of your performance or your contribution can get it. You must want it and God gives it. It is that simple. It isn't something you're forced into either. No one should reluctantly give up their old life for God's new life. If they are arm twisted into it, then it's legalism. And you know what the result of legalism is? Here's the fruit of legalism, joylessness. There is no joy in legalism. There is no joy in being forced to give up an old life. It is something that you must joyfully do. The man joyfully said, here is everything. I'm gonna take and give it away and sell it. I want that treasure. You trade your sorrows. You trade your sin. You trade your striving and you say, I'm no longer in charge. I want Jesus to be the king of my life. I want him to reign. I want him to rule over my life.

I am surrendered to him. You know what he does? He gives us forgiveness. He gives us hope. He gives us joy. He gives us grace, a new life. He gives us heaven someday as our home. And I, on July 13th of 1990, I made that trade joyfully. I said, God, I am sick of the life that I'm living. And it was not a bad life. At that age and stage, I had plenty of money, plenty of friends, plenty of relationships, plenty of pleasure. I had everything that culture said would make me happy. So it wasn't like I was like, oh, this is my only option. No, I said, this is not making me happy. And I joyfully am willing to give up all of this to gain everything in Jesus, to gain forgiveness, a new life. Heaven is my home someday. Notice this. The man in the parable could not hang on to his old life and also get the treasure. It was one or the other. And Christian, let me talk to you for a moment. You cannot hang on to your old life and experience the new life that Jesus wants to give you. Some of you are trying to hang on to the old things that you think will bring you happiness and the enemy has sold you a

lie that if you hang on to these old things, that's really what's going to make you happy and you're trying, you're being stretched between two worlds and that is why you're somewhat miserable. When you made Jesus the leader of your life, you gave up all of those old things. Quit looking to those vices to make you happy. Quit hanging around that dysfunctional friendship group because you feel like you could be lonely otherwise. Give up that joker you're dating right now. Seriously, some of you need to break up. You're dating a bozo and you're doing it because you feel like this neediness and you're hanging on. No, no, no, no, no. Quit trying to find fulfillment in money and status and material goods. I don't care if you have money and status and material goods, but those things don't give you happiness. Quit trying to find your identity and all the wrong things. You traded all that. The minute you said, Jesus come into my life, be the leader of my life, forgive me of all my sin. The minute you did that, you said, I let go of all that because I'm trading all of that garbage and stuff that's worthless, Paul says, for gold in the ground. I heard it one time said that spiritual blindness is seeing Jesus without seeing Jesus. What does that mean? Some of us see Jesus like he's the add-on to our life. We see Jesus like, well, Jesus, I accepted in my life because

he's going to make me feel better about myself. No, no, no, no. Jesus is infinitely bigger than that. He is the king of Kings and the Bible says that someday every single knee will bow and declare him as Lord. He is powerful. He is the resurrected Savior. He is worthy of every single one of our surrenders. Do you hear that? He's worthy of it. With every parable. There are multiple truths. When you read about the parables of Jesus, it's kind of like looking at a diamond. When you look at a diamond, it has different facets and when you hold it up in the light, it shimmers and kind of has this glow about it in a different way. Every time you look at it, a parable is the same way. A parable is not just straightforward. Jesus was so brilliant because again, he was the son of God. So brilliant that when you read a parable, you can see it different ways and interpreted different ways. There's a different way to interpret this parable. When we many times read this parable, we automatically picture ourselves as we are the man that went into the field, sold everything to buy the field and get the treasure. That's the way I've been preaching it because that is an interpretation. But let me give you another interpretation that many Bible scholars see.

That the man in the field is actually Jesus. And the field itself is the world. And the treasure is you and I. In other words, Jesus was willing to give up heaven to exchange glory, to come to earth in the form of a man, to come into the field, into the world, to save us as the treasure. Jesus was willing to give up heaven to come into this world for you and me. John 3 16. For this is how God loved the world. He gave his one and only son Jesus so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. I know a king who saves. I know a Savior who died for our sins. I know a rescuer that makes dead things come back to life. I know a name that is above every other name. That name is Jesus. I know a name and that name is Jesus. I know a name that can save. ♪ Silence roaring waves, I know a name ♪ ♪ That can empty out a grave, I know a name ♪ ♪ It's the only name that saves ♪ ♪ And it's worthy of all praise ♪ ♪ I call you Jesus, I call you, I call you here ♪ ♪ Healer, risen and reigning in power ♪ ♪ Something comes out of the grave ♪ ♪ Every time I call you Jesus, I call you, I call you savior ♪ ♪ Worthy of glory forever ♪ ♪ Something comes out of the grave ♪

Some of you need to put your hands together and shout! We don't serve a god that's a statue or an idol. We don't serve a god that has no power and he was just a good man or a prophet. We serve a god that his very voice

creates earthquakes and thunder. That we serve a god that's almighty, all-powerful, that can heal, that can raise the dead, that can bring life, that can change a sinner like me and like you. And in the next few moments, I'm gonna ask that no one leave unless it's an absolute emergency because we're gonna do something that kind of feels a little bit like old-fashioned church. The kind of church that I grew up in. The kind of moment that I gave my life to Jesus in. And in a moment here, if you don't know Jesus as the leader and the savior and the lord and the forgiver of your life, I want to give you an opportunity to do it, to make a declaration. To say, the old life, I joyfully give it up. For a new life of forgiveness, a new life of purpose, and an eternity in heaven. Also, if you say,

I did make this decision at one point, but unfortunately I'm backslidden. I've walked away from God. Well now is your moment also to say, I'm gonna make a bold declaration to do a 180 and come back to God because he loves me and he's standing there with open arms. He's not there to accuse you or condemn you. He's there to receive you. So if you've never given your life to Jesus, and you want to make him the leader of your life and ask for forgiveness of sin, or you want to come back to God, this is where it's old-fashioned church. This is how I gave my life to Jesus. I'm gonna ask that you do something bold. I'm gonna ask that you do something authentic. I'm gonna ask that you push out of your row wherever you're at, and you come and meet me right down here, and I'm gonna pray for you. And I know it's gonna take a boldness, but guess what? People are already walking.

Come on, City First. Put your hands together for every person who's saying, I want to thank Jesus, the leader of my life. Come on right down here. Spread on out. Come on up here. People are still walking. You shouldn't stop clapping. Come on. Keep clapping. There are people coming from the very back. People that are coming from all over. That's alright. Just come right up here. There's room for you. We'll wait. We'll wait. Don't worry. Come on up. There's people still walking. There's people still walking. You might need to spread out a little bit. I need some of my pastors and prayer team members to come forward and help direct traffic here. There's people still coming. Why are you stopping clapping? There's people still coming. Yeah. We'll wait. There's people still. We'll wait for you. Don't worry. I'll tell you what. This is a sacred moment. It is a special moment. It is a God moment. It is a heaven moment. Yeah. People are still coming. Oh, I know you're

starting to stop clapping, but you need to keep clapping because people are coming. I don't know if we can spread out. There's people kind of getting clogged in the center aisles there. Somebody help direct traffic. Alright, I'll tell you. Every service has been like this. There are literally hundreds of people today at City First, not just at this location, but every location that are saying I'm wanting to give up the old life and I joyfully do it to embrace a new life. I want to say this if you came forward and I'm going to try to look every one of you in the eye. I want you to know this is the most important day of your life. Literally, this is the day that you were born for the day that your creator and you start a relationship that we're going to pray a prayer here and the Bible says this in Romans. It says that if you believe in your heart

and declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved. Doesn't say you might be saved, says you will be saved. Going back to what I said, do you want it? Then God gives it. He gives salvation. He gives forgiveness. So we're gonna pray a prayer, and that prayer basically is just saying, God, I want it, I want it. It's just that simple. And what we're gonna do is we'll pray this prayer and if you are still in your seats, I want you to pray with all of our friends up here, okay? And we are gonna say this in a thunderous voice together. We're gonna mark the moment, the moment when people say, I want it. I'm getting rid of my old life. I'm embracing a new life, a forgiven life, a life with Jesus as King. So let's bow our heads, all of us, and just realize if you came forward, God's listening to your voice right now, not mine. But let's all say this together. Ready? Here we go. Jesus, I come to you today and I ask for forgiveness for all my sin and everything I've done wrong. I give you my shame. I give you my past.

Forgive it. Thank you for dying for me. I wanna live for you. Thank you for loving me with an unconditional love that I don't deserve, but you freely give. Thank you for loving me, Jesus. In Jesus' name, everybody said, amen, amen. Come on. Amen. Wow, what a powerful message today from Pastor Jeremy.
