God’s Formula for Love That Lasts
God’s Formula for Love That Lasts starts with a bold truth from Pastor Stu Hodges: love doesn’t fail because the person changed, it fails when feelings become the foundation.
In this message, Pastor Stu Hodges unpacks the elephant nobody wants to name, “Will our love last?” and shows how Scripture replaces emotional hype with something stronger, actions, choices, and daily commitment.
From Colossians 3 and 1 Corinthians 13, we learn that love is not just something you fall into or fall out of, it’s something you grow, live, and protect. When love becomes a verb, it becomes durable.
If you’ve ever said, “I just don’t feel it anymore,” this message will show you what to build on instead.
Action Steps
Identify where you’ve been trusting feelings instead of choices
Do one intentional act this week to grow love
Practice one trait from 1 Corinthians 13 every day
Spend time receiving God’s love so you can reflect it

Work to do in the house. We're thrilled you're here. Today we are in week two of a relationship series. We're calling this series the elephant in the room, the elephant in the room. We're talking about those awkward, tense, unmentionable issues that exist in all of our relationships. And we learned last week that God's priority are your relationships, that God really cares about relationships. And because he cares about them so much, he has a lot to say about them. And the Bible is full of relational wisdom. We're unpacking a lot of that in this series, looking to see what the Bible says about our relationships. And here's what the whole premise of this series is based on. And that is that if you'll learn to address the elephant in the room God's way, then you'll actually start to experience God's best in your relationships. So that's what we're trying to do, uncovering and exposing some of these elephants in the
room today. I want to address an elephant that creeps in almost unnoticed sometimes, and he enters many of our relational rooms. And this is an elephant that married people deal with, dating people deal with, engaged people deal with. A lot of times people who are dating, they'll let this elephant in the room and it'll cause them to have some commitment issues, which means they never take their dating to the next level. They never move to engagement or into marriage because of this elephant in the room. And then conversely, a lot of people who are married, they allow this elephant in the room. They open the door and they invite the elephant in. Usually it happens around, I don't know, around years eight to 10 in your marriage. And this elephant comes in and just plops down right in the middle of your relationship. room and a lot of people avoid talking about it. A lot of people just kind of learn to live with it. A lot of people never really address it. But today I wanna address the elephant in the room called will our love last? Will our love last? Some of you showed up today asking that question. Will our love last? Some of you have never said it out loud, but you've been thinking it, will our love last? Some of you are in a relationship with somebody and you're pulling for a different team than they're pulling for tonight. And you're like, if my team wins and his team loses, will our love last? Are we even gonna make it? Will our love last?
I read the results of a survey recently, survey taken of single adults in America. And when asked, how long does true love last? 73% of them said they believe that true love can last a lifetime. Woo, let's go. Let's go, 73%, that's awesome. True love can last forever. Now in full transparency, I do need to tell you that this survey was commissioned by the dating app known as Tinder. So I'm not 100% sure. I'm not sure, I'm not sure how reliable the results are. All right, I'm just telling you. But 73% of single adults say love can last forever. I got one question, then why are they still single? Hello, think about that. Clearly, believing that love can last a lifetime isn't enough. Because if believing it was enough, we wouldn't have divorce and we wouldn't have breakups and we wouldn't have heartbreak and we wouldn't have disappointments. Believing doesn't mean that love will last forever. And that's really what I wanna help you with today because most people at some point in their relational life, this big old awkward elephant comes in and sits down and suddenly things start to feel a little less satisfying in your relationship. And suddenly there's a little less passion.
There's a little less camaraderie. She's a little more on edge. He's a little more disconnected. Things that you used to think were cute and sweet and adorable are now frustrating and off-putting. Little things that you used to be able to laugh about and overlook now turn into big, huge arguments and you find yourself asking, will our love last? I heard about this old country couple many, many, many years ago. You talk about lasting love. This couple was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and they had never had an argument the whole time they'd been married. And so at their anniversary party, someone said, please tell us the secret to lasting love and how you've loved so long, but never had any arguments. And so the husband explained the story like this. He said, 50 years ago, when we were leaving the church to go on our honeymoon, my wife's horse refused to go. And I watched her get off the horse and she looked the horse straight in the eyes and she said, that's one. And the horse went a little bit and then the horse stopped again. And he said, she got off the horse a second time. She looked the horse straight in the eye. She said, that's two. And then the horse went a little further. And then the horse stopped again and she got off the horse.
And this time she pulled out her revolver. She said, that's three. And she shot the horse dead. The man said, I lost my mind. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I said to her, honey, what are you doing? You can't just shoot an animal dead. And she looked at me and she said, darling, that's one. And he said, we've never argued since. Now that's one way, one way. Oh, come on. That's funny. Okay, here you are. That's so funny. That's so funny. That's one way to make love last. But the Bible actually gives us. A better way, a better way. And if you're here today, listen, you're here and you feel like you're in a relational dead end. If you're here and you feel like, man, my marriage is lacking love or my dating life is going nowhere. If you feel like you're stuck today in a loveless relationship, I wanna tell you that the Bible actually gives us the answer to how to make love last forever. I wanna show it to you. I wanna show this would be a great memory verse, by the way, for all of us in relationship.
This is what the Bible says to us about lasting love. The Bible says, therefore, as God's chosen people, that's you and me, holy and dearly loved. The Bible says to do this, clothe yourselves. In other words, put on like clothing, clothe yourselves with, and look at the list, with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Look at that list, look at that list. Is that like a, is that an amen list or an oh my list? Look at it. It says with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. And then it says, bear with each other and forgive one another. If any of you have any grievance against someone, forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity. Pastor, will our love last? It will if you put it on. It will if you wear it like clothing. If every day you put on compassion and kindness and humility and compassion and patience and forgiveness and forbearance and love, it will last. It'll never wear out. It'll never go out of style. You'll never get tired of seeing it. You'll never stand in the closet and think, is there anything else I need?
No, that's all you need is love. If you'll put it on, if you'll put it on, it will never end. This is a love that'll last forever, forever, forever. Some of y'all look at me like, oh, that's special. That's sweet. That's nice. That's wonderful. But pastor, that's not really what I'm asking. That's not really the elephant in the room. You see, I'm really, really asking is, will the feeling called love last forever? Well, the feeling, that feeling, you know, that, that feeling, that's butterflies in my stomach, those sweaty palms, those, those, those feelings of, oh, I just, whoo, I love him so much. I love her so much. Will that feeling, will that feeling last forever? And will I, can I just tell you that, that actually might be the problem with your love. Married or single today, you need to, you need to know this, that if you want your love to last, then love must be more than a feeling. It must be more than a feeling. The rock band Boston had it right. Y'all know the song? ♪ More than a feeling ♪ Y'all know that one? That's all I, that's all I'm doing. That's all I'm gonna do.
I was gonna do more, but you didn't act like you wanted me to do more. So I'm not doing anymore. This is what gets most of us into trouble, is we make, we make love all about a feeling. The elephant in the room starts to whisper to us about our feelings. And when love is just a feeling, it has no staying power. It has no real commitment. When love's a feeling, you fall in love, and you fall out of love. When love's a feeling. Have you ever thought about those two terms? Those are such odd, you know, idioms to use. I fall in love and out of love. Like I'm just walking down the street one day and trip over love and boom, I'm in it. Like you fall in a hole, you fall in love. You ever thought about that? How strange, or I fall out of love. Some of you have said that. I thought, oh, we just fell out of love, really? Like you're driving down 64 and all of a sudden you fall out of the car. That doesn't happen. You don't just trip into love and stumble out of love. That's what happens when you make love a feeling, but that's not what true love is. Listen, listen, you choose the path that determines will our love last.
You choose that path. you choose the path that has you falling in or out of love you choose it I get it there's an emotion of love there's a there's a there is there is a feeling of love and it's what most people are looking for if you're single you're looking for that if you're married you're hoping to keep that this science actually just explains to us that that feeling you're talking about are just these high amounts of endorphins that your body releases you know dopamine and oxytocin and adrenaline and you get that surge of of those endorphins and and science actually tells us that after a year or two your body actually normalizes being around him or her your body acts your body actually thinks that it's now normal to be in their presence and so that loss of appetite you had when you were first with them because oh I just I just can't stand it's so wonderful to be with them now you've got your appetite back that all I don't need any sleep as long as we're together now you can sleep anytime anywhere it's it's it's a chemical release in your body that now that now you don't that now you don't have after a couple of years of being together and the newness is worn off and you've added a couple kids to the family and you've been offended one too many times by the in-laws and and and you've got a few financial challenges that you've gone through and you you've actually seen each other go to the bathroom oh my gosh and so suddenly when he chews his food it is so loud and when she laughs it's so piercing to your ears and and now it's I'm just not feeling it anymore well our love last you you listen you you move from more than a feeling to singing I lost that love and feeling there it is and now it's what it's gone that's what that's what happens when the elephant in the room shows up I've lost control I don't there's some men listen there's some men in this church they didn't sing a single song during worship but you start singing lost that love and feeling and they got a whole chorus going on love is a feeling it won't last but little love is more than a feeling it when listen when love is a fact when loves a choice when loves an action when loves a verb love will last a lifetime a lifetime and I'm trying I'm trying to
help expose this elephant in the room that whispers in all of our ears I don't know this isn't gonna last and what do you do when it doesn't last and you got to get out of the relationship that's that listen listen feelings change feelings come and go but if you'll put love like a fact in your life it will last forever you heard you heard about the facts of life today I'm gonna teach you the facts of love the facts of love I'm gonna give you three of them today you want to write these down three facts of love that will make love last a lifetime here's number one is this fact number one of love is you can grow love you can grow it love can be grown it can be cultivated it can be nourished in fact I would suggest to you it has to be that if you're in a marriage right now that you don't really feel love that it's time to grow some love because when you're married love is it so much about a feeling it's actually about it's actually about the fact now if you're single if you're single I'm not gonna totally discount the feeling of love all right let me just say that there's some chemistry to love and I can I get that and before you say I do there needs to be some chemistry if you listen if you don't want to kiss them you probably not gonna want to live with them all right so I get it there's got to be some there's got to be some of that but if all you're doing in single people is looking for the feeling chasing the feeling the feeling will probably lead you to the wrong person all right I'm gonna give I'm gonna give some pastoral wisdom, some counsel to all of my single friends today. I need you to stop chasing the feeling. If I were single today, I would stop running around seeing who do I have feelings for. Here's what I would do. I would find someone who has the qualities and characteristics of a person of whom I would like to be in a relationship with.
Someone who is steady, someone who is making good choices with their life, someone who is following Jesus, someone who is serving their church. That's where I would start looking, by the way. And if I found somebody who had the qualities and characteristics of someone that I think I could wanna be with one day, then I would see if I could grow some love toward them. Oh, they're not really my type, pastor. They've already got a receding hairline. Right. Right. Give every dude 10 years and they will all have a receding hairline. You see what I'm saying? You're chasing the feeling, but the feeling will often lead you to the wrong place. You chase the person, the qualities and characteristics of someone. And you start to see, hey, can I grow love for this person? Don't let your feelings lead the way because feelings are overrated. Now, this would explain why. When married couples start to look outside of their marriage, when they start to think that someone else would be better suited for them or someone else could meet my needs better,
like the grass is greener on the other side, I always just wanna say, when the grass looks greener on the other side, it just means it's time to start watering your yard more often. If the grass looks greener over there, it means my yard needs some more attention. It's time to grow the grass in my yard. And can I just tell you, listen, to grow anything takes effort and intentionality. To grow anything takes work. So if you're married, let me just ask you some real practical questions about the way you're loving. The way you're loving, Mr. I'm not feeling it. When was the last time you did the chores she usually does? Like if she usually washes the dishes, why don't you wash the dishes tonight? It's Superbowl night, pastor. I know, what better night than to grow some love? When was the last time that you sent her a middle of the day, random, for no reason whatsoever, I love you text? When was the last time you did that? When was the last time you busted out with the kissy face emoji? Come on, somebody. Nothing grows love like the kissy face emoji. When was the last time
when she was done telling you a story, you responded with these four words? And then what happened? Those are the four most romantic words to a woman. And then what happened? That's how you grow love. And let me ask you some practical questions. Miss, I'm not really feeling it. When was the last time on your way home, you stopped by the 7-Eleven and bought him his favorite candy bar? When was the last time? Because nothing grows love like a roll of Rolos for a dude. Buy him a big bite while you're in there. I'm telling you. You've grown some love. And I know it's cold, but when was the last time you wore something other than that moo-moo to bed at night? Because tonight might be the night to grow some love. Where are the men who were singing earlier, huh? I'm saying it might be time to water the garden. It might be time to grow where you're planted. If you're like, I just don't feel love, then grow it. Because love can be grown. Now obviously I'm applying this in a marriage relationship, but this is a principle applied to any relationship. You can grow love with your kids. You can grow love with your parents. You can grow love with your siblings, with your neighbors, with the people you work with.
You can grow love. It can be grown. But you have to put in the work. You have to be intentional. You have to put forth the effort. Love that lasts is love that's grown. These are the facts of love. You can grow love. Number two is this. You can be love. You can be love. Will our love last? Well, it will if you practice love. There's a lot of us who are looking to all the wrong places, trying to get our definition of love. We're looking to culture. We're looking to Instagram. We're looking to media. We're looking to the rom-com on TV. Some of us have only had examples of love that hasn't lasted. So we're looking to our parents, but their love didn't last. Or we're looking to our friends, but their love didn't last. So we don't have examples of love, but we're trying to define love. And the Bible actually tells us what love is. First Corinthians chapter 13, put it in your notes, is the love chapter. If you've ever been to a wedding, likely somebody read from first Corinthians 13. It is the Mount Everest of love. Tells you everything you need to know about love. And it actually is more than a definition of love. I used to hear these verses read and just think, oh, this is just like some poetic description
of what love is. I don't know, maybe 10 or 12 years ago, I heard a pastor actually walk through first Corinthians 13 phrase by phrase. And I discovered this isn't just a definition of love. This is my marching orders for love. This is actually more than just a description of what love is. This is how you can actually be love. You can be love. You can be it. Let me show you. You're going to want to write down some phrases and take some notes, because this is how to make your love last. God tells us, this is not just what love is, but this is how you leave from here actually being love to the people in your life. The Bible says this, love is patient. You had to be patient because we're going to stop after every one of these words and just talk about them for a moment. It's patient. Love is not pushy. Love never pressures. Imagine single ladies dating a dude like that. That's love. That's how you are love. Listen, by nature, I am not a patient person. Patience is not a virtue that describes me very well. But if I want my love to last, I can be love, which means I can be patient. I can extend grace. I can set aside my expectations and my timelines and my demands and be patient. What is love? It says love is kind.
Love is kind. You can write that down. Another word would be considerate. The word literally means to be useful, serving and gracious. I think a great question to ask of yourself is how useful is my love? How useful is it? My love should always take into consideration what the other person feels, what the other person needs, what the other person desires, and I should strive to serve them. This is how I am love, a love that lasts. Love is kind. It says love, it does not envy. And that's a difficult one, if we were to be honest about it, because all of us want what we want. And most often, we want. You want what someone else has. And that's called envy. That's called jealousy. The idea literally is this, that love is not displeased when you succeed. So when you win, I win, because you're winning, I'm winning. That's how it works in love. Look at it, it says, love does not boast, it is not proud. Oh my gosh. Do you see what you've been missing by not reading your Bible? You've been missing this level of deep conviction right now. You feel it? Like it does not boast. It's not proud.
It doesn't brag. It doesn't try to make me look better than you. Love never one-ups, you know what I mean? When I say one-up, like you tell a story, but then I'm gonna tell a story to one-up your story. Or you say something like, oh man, I'm so tired. And I say something like, oh, you're so tired. You wanna know about tired? I haven't slept in seven weeks. You've been snoring in the bed, I'm so tired. Love doesn't do that. Love doesn't take center stage. Love doesn't demand to be the center of attention. Love doesn't get the last word. Love is humble. Love, listen, love doesn't need to be right. I know, that would hurt. Love, it says, does not dishonor others. The word literally means love does not behave disgracefully, dishonorably, or indecently. So just think about your behaviors. Think about how you treat others. Think about the way you treated the girl you went on a date with last week. Think about that. Think about the words you said to your husband last week. Think about that. Think about the story you told to the friends at work about your wife last week. Were you honoring?
Honor means to treat something or someone as weighty. As important and valuable. To protect them at all costs. This is love. Love, the Bible says, look at it. It is not self-seeking. That means it is not me first. It does not demand my way. I don't love you for what you can do for me. And I don't love you for how you make me feel. Get that one. My love isn't based on you toward me. Because that makes love all about me. But love is not self-seeking. When love is an action, you make love all about the other person. Love never says this, you owe me one. You owe me one. Oh, you owe me an apology. No, no, no, not when you are displaying God love. A love that will last. Oh, I'll do this for you, but you gotta do that for me because you owe me one. That's not how God's love works, you see. Love is not self-seeking. Look at it, it is not easily angered. That means that love never has a short fuse. Love is not touchy or snappy. And it doesn't fly off the handle. It doesn't get easily angered.
And then finally, love, it keeps no record of wrongs. The picture here is of a bookkeeper or an accountant that tracks somebody else's debts. And that's how some of us live in our marriages and our relationships, we're tracking the debt. We're keeping up with what you did to me. But love never records wrongdoing for later reference. Love doesn't keep a list, which means that love always forgives. And I came to tell you today, you can be this. You're like, oh, pastor, you don't know me that well. Oh, I know I don't know you that well, but I know the Holy Spirit quite well. And when he works in and through your life, you can be this kind of love because he brings it through you. You can be this. You can be this love. You can have a love that will last forever. And I get it, some of you are like, well, yeah, I get, okay, okay, but what about, what about, what about the relationship I'm in, my husband, my wife, they aren't acting like that toward me, they aren't displaying that kind of God love toward me. What do I do then? What do I do then? Because it doesn't look like our love's gonna last forever because. They aren't loving me like this.
Let me say this with the greatest amount of sensitivity I can bring to the topic. I don't mean for what I'm about to say to be applied in extreme situations. So you need to know that, that if you're in a dangerous relationship or an abusive relationship, this is not applied to what I'm about to say and if you're loving someone with all that God has given you to love them and loving them the way, and they aren't returning that love. Listen, there are some people who are so broken and so damaged that no amount of love will change them in a relationship. So I understand that, but in a generally healthy marriage, and I hope you understand what I mean by that. In a generally healthy marriage, when somebody in the marriage just isn't feeling it, and you wonder, what do I do? Here's what you do. Listen, you allow your vows of marriage to fuel your love and you keep doing all God's called you to do to grow and be love. Okay? There's some extremes and I get it, and we won't go into all those today. But in relationships,
you're responsible for you and you're responsible for the love God's called you to grow and the love God's called you to be. Now, if you're not married, now, if you're not married and you're single and you're like, hey, this person, they're not like showing me that kind of love. What do I do? Well, you really need to consider, like maybe that's your sign. Like, and I'm trying to say this insensitively. I understand you're involved, you're emotionally connected, you're attached, you've made commitments, but if you hadn't said I do at the altar and you're seeing signs where this person isn't stepping toward you with this kind of love, the kind of love I just read, then you need to really seriously consider if this is the relationship God has for you. And I know you're saying, well, they'll change or he'll come around or she'll start to see it my way. And I'll just give you this little principle and I hope it helps you. We never date from a place of compromise. We date from a place of conviction. So you bring your convictions into the relationship. And I truly believe that if we'll allow the Holy Spirit to work through us,
we can be love, you can grow love. These are the facts of love, you can be love. Here's number three, I think it's the most important of all the facts that I could give you today. You can experience love. You can grow love, you can be love and you can experience love. In fact, I would say the greatest way to make love last is to experience God's love. It's the greatest way to make love last. Some of you today are unloved and some of you today have never experienced love like I've talked about. And some of you have been hurt by love. Some of you have had some things happen in your past that were not good and they were done in the name of love. Some of you would say, pastor, I just don't even know how to love because I've not really ever experienced. And I wanna tell you that the way you love is to experience God's love first, embrace God's love first, receive God's love first and it will change the way you love. I wanna show you the scripture, it's so powerful. The Bible says this, this is how God showed his love among us. He sent his one and only son into the world that we might live through him. And this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son
as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Now, no one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives. and His love is made complete in us. And so we know, and we rely, don't miss that. We rely on the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever lives in love, lives in God, and God in them. Now watch, this is the most powerful of all the scriptures. It says, we love because He first loved us. So if you wanna know, how do I love, how do I love? Well, in this one short passage, the word love is used 13 times. The Bible tells us, the Bible makes it clear, that the secret of lasting love is being loved by God. So today, the invitation is simple. Would you just take a step toward a God who loves you? And if you do, you'll be able to take a step toward loving others the way God loves you. I get it, I know I'm talking to people on all ends of the spectrum today in relationships. Some of you have been so hurt, you've been so disappointed, you've been so frustrated in a relationship, and I'm just saying to you, would you take a step toward God today? That's all I'm asking. Some of you, you've been so hurt in a relationship, you're not even sure you could ever love again.
You've been disappointed, rejected, betrayed. You're like, I can't trust them. I know, I understand. I'm just asking you to take a step toward God today, not toward anybody else. Take a step toward God first. Receive his love today. Some of you, I know, in a crowd this size, I know, there are couples who came today and they are ready to throw in the towel. And I'm just saying, please, please don't give up. Please take a step toward God today. Sir, lead your family toward Jesus today. And watch and see what God can do when you receive his love first. And some of you have been single and you've been wanting a relationship. And you're like, I don't see it in my future. I don't have any prospects out there. I'm not sure what God's doing, but he's not bringing somebody to me to love right now. It's okay. Trust God and take a step toward him. This is how you make love last. You can grow it. Yes, I believe it. And all of us need to, and you could be it. And I hope you're a lead from here, convicted and challenged to go be loved. But before any of that,
receive his love, experience him, and the love he has for you. Because that's the secret to lasting love. I'm gonna give you one final verse before we're done. I'm gonna prime the pump and just tell you, this is a verse you're gonna wanna respond to. Because it is such a beautiful promise from scripture. Because all of us, every single one of us, look at me now, all of us are looking for lasting love. All of us are. And there is one place today you can go to find it. I promise you. This is such a powerful scripture. The Bible says, the faith of God is the strength of the faithful love of the Lord. The Bible says, the faithful love of the Lord never ends. In other words, it lasts forever. Come on, can you thank him for that today? Come on, can you praise him for the love that never ends? Now, would you receive it? Bow your heads today and close your eyes and open your hearts. We started this message saying, Holy Spirit, fill me up. And he wants to fill you today with his love. God, we're thankful for a love that never ends. And we receive it today. It changes us from the inside out. We'll never be the same. And as we receive your love, experiencing it for ourselves today,
may we display it and show it to others. May we grow love in our relationships and be loved to the people around us, fueled by your love. Thank you for a love that never ends. Thank you for a steadfast, steady love that never runs out. Thank you that we don't go too far without your love. Thank you that we can't send too much amidst your love. Thank you that there's nothing we can do to earn it or deserve it. And there's nothing we can do to dismiss it from our lives, that your love stands steady for all of us today to receive. Thank you for that, Jesus. We'll receive. your love and experience it now. And for some of you today, you've never said yes to the love of Christ. You've never given your heart and life to Jesus. And if that's you, I'd like to invite you to pray a simple prayer with me. You can pray it silently right where you are to give your life to Jesus today, to receive his love. If that's you and you say, pastor, include me in that prayer. I'm ready to give my life to Jesus. Would you just shoot your hand high in the air so I know I'm praying with you right now. I'm praying with you online. Follow the chat over in the link. Let me know that you are giving your heart
and life to Jesus today. I say, Jesus, I wanna know you. I want my sin forgiven by you. I wanna live for you. So come into my life and be my Lord and savior. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen.
