God's Word Changes Us

it up because you took away my shame jesus paid it all all to him i owe sin had left the crimson stain he washed it right as sing hallelujah here i come hallelujah here i come i'm not bound anymore hallelujah here i come everybody clap your hands right there and do your dance come on is anybody excited to be free this morning i'm so grateful for your freedom come on let's lift it up together say hallelujah hallelujah thank you jesus thank you jesus i've been washed in the water washed in the blood as good as you oh hallelujah i've been washed in the water washed in the blood all because of you oh hallelujah come on is anybody grateful this morning come on you may be seated and pay attention to the screens i'm leo and this is my wife christina we've been coming to the local church for five years now we've been serving for three years together and we do the social media for the creative team leo signed us up to do social media and i didn't even know that that was a way to serve so when i found that out it gave me kind of hope that i could do something in the church because i already had social media and influencing kind of account with fitness so you know if i bring people to fitness i can bring people to jesus preacher says that go and make disciples of every nation and the whole purpose of this is connecting people to one another and with god And, you know, the social media and the creative team really allow me to do that, which I'm really grateful for. I was a little nervous at first because I'm like, you know, what if I post the wrong thing?

What if people don't like what I put out there? And I do the opposite of my goal. But at the end of the day, God is with us and, you know, our heart's in the right place and we're trying to do good. He's going to help us through that. He's going to make it good. It's very exciting, absolutely, but also it's very challenging. But I think that, you know, stretching out like that is strengthening your faith. Baptism Sundays is definitely my favorite Sunday to serve because I get to be a part of watching someone transform their life right then and there. I'm just behind the camera, but I'm right there and I just get to see the moment so up close. And to put it on social media so more people can see it and be transformed is, you know, I love it. Serving at the local church has taught me that I'm not alone. When times get tough, it's good to know that we have a community here that prays for you, that cares for you. And most importantly, that puts God first. And he's the one that is able to guide us through all our ups and downs and just keep moving forward. And it's very rewarding to know that we have that here. How awesome is it to hear about the benefits of obedience to what God is calling us to do? Church family, please stand to your feet and join us as we continue to worship the light of the world. Well, for all who are thirsty. You invite me to journey with you and I say yes. Speak to us, change us. It's what we ask. A Christ who is worthy. Amen. Tell somebody they're better looking than who you usually sit with at church. Go ahead. Yeah. It is so good to see you guys. I am Dan Southerland. I'm one of the pastors. My privilege to teach today. And I've been out for two months on a sabbatic. That's a fancy word for an extended break. And Mary and I had a blast. We spent two weeks in the Keys, drove to Texas, saw her sister, went to the Ozarks, saw my kids, went to North Carolina, saw nobody and are back. And we are restored and fired up and grateful. Give you a quick update on her as well. She had her right knee replaced end of March. Doctor has pronounced her totally recovered. And now she's about to have the left knee done in July. So she's getting sassy again.

That tells me she's feeling good. And I am grateful for that. And our service guides are gonna start passing the buckets right now. As I give you an update on the building, this is big news. This week we had submitted a fully drawn, detailed set of construction plans. That is a big step in the process of expansion of this building as well as expansion of our kids' space and our parking lot. So now we're just praying for the city of Davie to get the lead out, to respond. So pray for that. And by the way, guys, here's why I'm telling you that. This is only possible because of your generosity. Our goal is to see a thousand more people come to faith in Christ and be baptized. And already, nearly 300 have done so, which is amazing. And so many did so after kids' camp and after youth camp. It's just been awesome. But when you give, you make that happen. When you give, you make the best of it. baptism that you saw last weekend happened. So, thank you for your generosity. Bless you for it, whether you give when the plates pass or online, which is what I do, or by the app. I can't figure out the app. Seventy-year-olds have just passed apps, you know. That's my excuse. I'm available day for that to happen. Great opportunity to teach today. Thank you so much for being here. We're in a series called It's All in the Word. This is a series that Pastor Eric put together. It's been a phenomenal series. And what I want to do is highlight what we've covered in the first three weeks so we can hook it up with what we're going to talk about today. So, you got your notes out? Here's the first blanks. In week one, we talked about the fact that God's Word equips us. That's what the Bible does. It's what the Scriptures do. They equip us. Secondly, God's Word discerns us. It helps us figure out what's right and what's wrong in our thinking, in our lives. Last week, Eric killed it when he taught about God's Word challenges us, and particularly if we don't cherry-pick the Scriptures we like and leave out the Scriptures we don't like. He did a great job of that last weekend. If you weren't here, I encourage you to go online and check it out. And today, I get to teach as we wrap this series up on this truth, God's Word changes us. He doesn't just want to equip us or discern us or challenge us. He wants to change us through the truth of His Scripture. Now, you may have heard this in the past. I've heard pastors say it when they talk about the importance of the Bible. I've heard them say, the Bible is the owner's guide for the Christian. Yes, that's not enough. It is that, but it's so much more. You know, when you get a car, new or used, you hope it comes with an owner's guide. And if you're like me, you keep the owner's guide in the glove box so that when you are in trouble, when you have to troubleshoot something, you can pull it out and you can look at it. In fact, very few of us have read the owner's guide front to back. Anybody done that with all 400 pages? No, it's not much of a read. I mean, the plot's not really very good at all, but the information is invaluable. So, recently, Pastor Eric and I made a trip to Orlando because Pastor Danny, guy in charge of our creative arts, was in the hospital. He'd had a heart episode while he was at Disney. He's good now. Everything's fine. But Eric and I, on a Saturday afternoon, just thought, let's go up there. Let's surprise him. Let's just walk into his hospital room in Orlando. So, we took my truck because I wanted to drive. That's all I'm going to say about that. And it was doing great until the last mile or so before the hospital when my check engine light came on, and my oil pressure gauge went from 40 to zero in about five seconds. And in a 2010 Silverado truck, when the check engine light comes on, it will not let you ignore it because it goes ding, ding, ding, ding, until you do something. Wow, is that aggravating and effective at the same time. So, we pull into the parking lot.

Pastor Eric says, let me get the owner's guide out. And I'm thinking, I'm going to have to figure this out. I mean, this is what I'm thinking. I'm thinking Eric is a great preacher. He's an amazing dad. He loves people. He loves God. I don't know if he can find a wrench. I mean, really, he's going to troubleshoot this, and he pulls it out. And here's the cool part. He fixed it. He figured out how to fix it. I have a picture. I should have taken one of his face because it was amazing. That's Eric's hands figuring out how to kill the ding. We had figured out that what had happened is the oil pressure sensor had gone bad. had because my oil was still fine. There was no heat in the engine. The sensor had died, but it was gonna ding all the way back to Fort Lauderdale if he didn't pull that fuse. Kudos to Pastor Eric. He's more mechanical than I thought. That's how we tend to use the Bible. If I'm in trouble, I'll find a verse. You know, if something's in crisis, I'll turn there for God to speak to me, but it is so much more than that. Our verse today is out of Psalm 119. Several verses out of that passage today, but one verse in particular, we've already sung the verse. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Three points from that verse today. Three ways God uses his word, the Bible, to change us. Number one, write it in. Trust God's word to light your path. Trust God's word to light your path. Now, as Christ followers, we want to know that God is leading us.

We want to know he's directing us. We want to know he's guiding us, and we can trust him to do that through his word. Have you ever been anywhere where it's just totally dark? I mean, where you've gotten away from the ambiance of city lights, and no electric lights, and no headlights. I mean, no light. Years ago, we went camping when my son was finishing up high school with about 35 different people. We reserved Little Rabbit Key in the keys for us for that weekend. Now, Little Rabbit Key is a key that's about a half mile wide, and a half mile long, and about 18 inches above sea level. I mean, it's barely not under the water, but it's got great snapper fishing. We were excited about going. We got there, and sure enough, about midnight, a storm rolled in, but the sky before midnight was brilliant. I mean, I was seeing stars you couldn't see in Fort Lauderdale, you couldn't see in Miami because of the lights, but oh, it was awesome. About midnight, a storm rolled in, and some people slept on boats. My son and I were sleeping in a two-man pup tent, and we had air mattresses with a sleeping bag floating on top.

The sleeping bag was not for warmth. It was plenty warm in the keys. It was just for cushion, and about two in the morning, I'm dreaming, and I'm dreaming that I'm rocking, that I am gently moving, and in the middle of my dream, I turn over and plop a hand out, and it lands in six inches of water in the tent. I woke up and realized that we had a two-hour storm driven from the west, and that the tide had come in at the exact same moment, and the entire key was flooded. Now, the good news is it was being flooded. It's still only about ankle, maybe shin deep, but wow, I've never been more grateful to have had one of these, because it's pitch dark, and it's storming, and stuff that was in one place when we went to bed is no longer where it was, because it has floated away. So, we literally flip on the lanterns we had. Now, the one I had then was actually much brighter than this, but guys, go ahead and kill the light. Now, when the scripture teaches that the word is a lamp to your path, path is a Hebrew idea of your entire lifelong journey. God wants to give big picture direction through his word. Now, y'all may be thinking, Dan, that's not much of a light, really. I can see my way out of here. I can see four ways out of here.

I can see some of you and can't see others, but if I carry this along, it lights my path. Lights back on, guys. That's about all the dark some of us can take. The point is that God's word. gives long-term direction. Write this in. God's Word will show you the way forward. I could see that was the way that I needed to go. I could see that was the way to the edge of the island, even though the edge and the entire island are underwater. I could see enough to have direction. God gives general direction, light for the big picture. Psalm 119 is an interesting psalm. It's the longest chapter in the Bible, and it's in the middle of the Bible. There's literally half of the Bible before Psalm 119, and half of it after, and it's about the importance of the Bible itself. It's about the Word. You think God's telling us something? Longest chapter's about the Word, central chapter's about the Word. He's telling us there's a lot in my Word. Look at verse 130, the teaching of your Word gives light so even the simple can understand. I qualify. I am a simple-minded guy, but when I turn to Scripture and say, Lord, give me direction for my life, show me your career path, not mine, give me big picture light, He gives it. Trust God to guide your path, to give big picture light. Number two, trust God's Word to guide your steps. Trust God's Word to guide your steps. At first glance, that looks like a repetition of the first idea, but it's different.

God's Word, it says, is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. The light to my path is a bigger general light that says, here's the direction, here's the career, here's the journey, here's where you're headed long-term, but I was more thankful for this light on Little Rabbit Key the night it flooded than for that one. Know why? Kill the lights one more time, guys. That big lantern gave me overall light, but you know what this one did? It gave me light to not find the alligator as I stepped across a flooded key. It gave me light to not find any snakes as I stepped across that key. It gave me light to walk to the edge and see, oh, there's the dock, don't go beside it, it gets deep quickly. It guided my steps one at a time. Lights back up, guys. That's what God's Word does. He gives long-distance light for your career, your life, your journey with Him. But there are times where I am even more grateful for the next step light that God's Word gives. Trust God's Word to guide your steps. Your Word is a lamp to my feet. Write it in. Scripture gives wisdom for the big picture. That's the lantern, the overall light. He'll show you where you're going with your life, but it also gives wisdom for the daily decisions. Sometimes it's harder to trust God with the day-by-day stuff. We've trusted God to help us find the right career. Most of us feel pretty good about that. We've trusted God in our marriage. Marriage will teach you to trust God. We've trusted God with raising our kids. But then every day, we make every decision like we're on our own.

No. God can give you daily wisdom, daily next step. Lord, that's what I want to do with my marriage. What do I do today? That's where I want my business to go. What do I do today? That's how I want to raise this kid. What do I do today? Write it in. God guides us through His Word every step of the way. Every single step. I have a pastor friend in Kansas City who's one of my best friends in my entire life. His name is Troy McMahon. He's got a Duck Dynasty style beard. I mean, he could have had a role on that TV show and just got Duck Dynasty kind of wisdom as well. But he calls Scripture his truth source. I want you to write that in. Let's think of Scripture as our truth source. source. All of us have truth we believe, where did we get it? Now society today, everybody look this way, is misleading us. Society says really cute things like, well you have to find your own truth. Like truth changes from person to person. Everybody listening, ehhh. It doesn't. You can decide 2 plus 2 is 5, it's not. You can tell me that's your truth, okay? It ain't going to work. Truth is truth, and because it's based on God, it does not change. And as wishy-washy, mushy-gushy, feel-good as it is, well everybody finds your own truth. No! We either find God's truth or we don't find truth. Those are the choices, and God's Word guides us to the truth. Look at 2 Samuel, you are God, O Sovereign Lord, your words are truth, and you have promised these good things to your servant. Look at Psalm 119, verse 160, your Word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. God's truth doesn't change, we just keep discovering it in new ways. We keep finding new things.

Now is it accurate that you all have to find your own path? Sure, but find your own truth? Uh-uh. How arrogant can we be to think that we define truth? God, and God alone, defines truth. First, we trust God's Word to light our path. It's the overall light, the general direction, the long-term path. Second, we trust God's Word to guide our steps. Here's the third one, my favorite part. Trust God's Word to change your life, because that's what He wants to do. God wants to use His Word to change us, to make us more like Jesus, to make us into all He designed us to be. We said it earlier, but let's say it again. The Bible is not meant to just inform us, but to transform us. Write that in your notes. The Bible is not just meant to inform us, but to transform us. Boom! That's a big truth. Let's say it even stronger. The Bible is not just about information, the Bible is about transformation. Now, I'll have people say to me once in a while, oh, I love coming to church because I kind of get some good self-help ideas and some things I can do to improve my life. You know what? That's cool. It's not the point. The point is not to get here to get information. The point is to get here for transformation. And the point is to have enough humility to be able to say, I need God to change this. I need God to change me. Oh, there are parts of me He's already changed, but there are parts of me that are way behind. I need God to change this. Look at what it says here. In Psalm 119 again, we're just staying in that psalm, joyful are people of integrity who follow the instructions of the Lord, joyful are those who obey His laws and search for Him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil. They walk only in His paths. Yes and amen. Here's the truth. As I follow the truths of God's Word, I am changed from the inside out. We don't come to church for self-improvement. I've been working on me for 70 years, and so far I have not done very well. If I could fix this, this would be fixed. So, we submit to God, not for self-help, not for self-truth, but for God's truth and God's help and God's changes. And as I follow Him, He changes me from the inside out. Real change, lasting change, eternal change, truth-powered change, God-generated change. God's Word lights our and it guides our feet, but how does it change us? Thanks for asking. I should have made letters A, B, and C out of these next points,

so feel free to add that if you'd like. How does God change us with his word? Letter A, he changes our minds. Change always starts with a change in thinking. Parent, if you don't know this, you got to. You can't just try to change a kid's behavior. You got to change the thinking behind the behavior. Sometimes you have to change the identity behind the behavior. Real change starts in our minds. Scripture says, don't conform to the world's standards, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds. Now, in my life, before I said yes to Jesus and began to read his word, the Bible, I thought life was all about me. My needs, my wants, my dreams, my plans. Listen, this is true for all of us. I worshiped at the unholy trinity altar of me, myself, and I. That's what my life was about. That's the wrong trinity. That trinity will mess you up. Me, myself, and I sounds good, feels good. Society says, oh yeah, that's it. Oh no, it's not, because the deeper I went into that, the more self-centered I became. People were just things to be manipulated to get what I wanted. I even thought, you know, God might be okay if I could manage to convince him

to do what I want him to do. How arrogant do you have to be to think you can manipulate God? I was that arrogant, because before Christ, it was all about me. But when I gave myself to Christ, 17-year-old kid in high school, and began reading the scripture, he began changing my mind. He began changing my thinking. All of a sudden, as I'm studying the words of Jesus, I just kept reading the four Gospels again, and again, and again, and I hear Jesus saying, God's first, others are second, you're last. No me, myself, and I, you're last. It changed my thinking. Look at Romans 12 too. This is what was happening in my life. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you'll be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, his pleasing, his perfect will. When I follow the world's thinking, don't miss this, I become more worldly. You wanna be more worldly? Let social media be your main source of what influences your mind. You will be more worldly. But when I follow God's thinking,

I become more godly. God's word changes our minds. Letter B, God's word changes our identity. This is big. God's word will change your identity. Now, before I said yes to Jesus, 17-year-old kid, my identity was confused, mixed. I had pieces of it, but I knew I was a Texican, still am, I knew I loved football, still do. I worshiped music because that was a way I could prove to the world how talented I was. Wrong motive, good love, but life was about me. My team had to win. Everybody else had to know my Texas was superior. Everybody else had to like my music. It was still self-centered, and it was a confused identity. But after I gave my life to Christ, and I began reading his word, the identity thing began to shift. Now, here's the cool part. I still have many pieces of the identity, but the foundation has changed. I'm still a Texican. I'm Texas born, Texas bred. When I die, I'll be Texas dead. I mean, I don't wear this to look like a Texican. I wear this because I are a Texican. It's an expression of my true identity. I still love football. I mean, the next two months are the most boring stretch.

of all sports. Thank God for the World Cup. But after the middle of July until the middle of August, I will die. Till football comes. Can't wait. Still love music. I worship from the heart. In fact, it was funny. Thursday night, I was so into the worship that I sat on the front row, knowing I was about to speak, all the way till the songs were finished. And one of the teenagers tapped me on the shoulder and said, I think you're up. I still love those things. But the foundation's changed. Here it is. Here's my foundation. Changed my whole identity. I'm the freaking son of the living God. Still a Texican, you bet. Still love football, without a doubt. Married a girl that loves football. Still love music. But the foundation has shifted. And when your identity changes, everything changes. So God literally changes our minds. He changes our identity. Look at the verse, 2nd Corinthians. Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone. A new life has begun. We become new people. We live new lives. We get new identities. God's Word changes us by changing our minds, by changing our identities. But lastly, God's Word will change my behavior. It will change my behavior. Before I said yes to Jesus, my behavior was 100% about pleasing me. What did I want? What did I need? What were my goals? Me centered was the theme of my life. But you know what's changed? The more I surrender to Jesus, the more I read His Word, the more my behavior changes. Now, do I still struggle with putting me first? Yes. Yes. But most of the time, God's first. Most of the time, others are first. Most of the time in my house, my wife is first. Most of the time, my kids are first. All of the time, my grandkids are first because He's had 50 plus years of changing me. And my confidence today is not in me, but I am not afraid of anything life has to offer because I know I'm the freaking Son of the living God, and my confidence is in Christ. Look at 2 Timothy. All Scripture is inspired by God, is useful to teach us what's true, make us realize what's wrong, it corrects us when we're wrong, it teaches us to do what is right. God's Word changes my mind, my identity, my behavior. Let's land this plane. Are you ready? Some of us come to the local church every week looking to gain some wisdom for living, and that's good. Some

of us may come every week looking for ways to make our lives a little better, a little self-improvement, that's good. But if we will open our minds and our hearts to the truth of God's Word, if we will repent of me, myself, and I, and do life His way as He describes in His book, we won't just gain self-improvement, we won't just gain wisdom for living, we will gain life change. The Spirit of God who lives in us once we give ourselves to Christ, wants to use the Word of God, that's the Bible, the Scripture, to make us more like the Son of God, and that is life change.
