Go Be The Church

Cool. I'm so thankful that you're here today. I'm excited that it's fall. I'm excited that my kids are going to school. I'm excited that more people are coming to church. I'm excited that the church is going to grow in the next couple months. I'm excited that many people are going to come to know Jesus in the next couple of months. I'm excited for Christmas. Hey, listen, I'm the leader, and that means that I'm like three to six months out ahead of you, so I'm already thinking about it. But I was thinking about my friend TJ's story that you heard today, and what's so compelling about it is that when God works in our lives, it requires our yes. And many times it requires the yes of people around us. And sometimes it requires the yes of a leader to step in and take a role in our lives. And today I just want to take a moment, and I want to kind of re-envision you around what God has called us to as a church this year. For the staff, I call this Vision Sunday Part 3. You know, we do it in January and in May, and now again in August, because this is a really critical season for our church. I was just talking to our pastors this week, and said, you know, what God does in our church really from August to December, but even August to October, really sets a trajectory for the whole year. And there's an opportunity, even if you're new to our church, you're a guest with us, to fast-track your involvement and your engagement in the life of our church over these next couple of months. Even starting today with what I'll talk about in just a moment, I want to just read the verse that God put on our hearts for this year as kind of a theme verse that says, now you are the body of Christ. Come on, look at somebody next to you and say, you. You.

Look at the other person and say, you too. It says, you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. So I want to give you a message today. These words should be familiar to you by now. Go be the church. We say it at the end of every service, every week, and here's the context, here's what the Apostle Paul is talking about before he gets to the verse that I read to you a moment ago. The Apostle Paul says this, for just as the body is one, and yet it has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so too is Christ. And what you're going to find here is that the Apostle Paul says something, and then he inverts it, and he says it again, and then he makes a point. And he's doing that here. Just as the body is one, and yet as many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, that's the way it is with Jesus. He's painting a picture between the physical body, the spiritual body, known as the body of Christ, and Christ himself. For in one spirit, we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks or slaves or free, we were all made to drink of the one spirit. He's saying no matter where you came from, no matter your status, we are all made to drink of the one spirit. For in fact, the body is not a single member, but many. Come on, everybody say many. It's many, just like all those voices. It's the many that are around us. He's saying we are individual humans in our different ways that we are, and yet if you're a follower of Jesus, you are making up the whole body of Christ. So you have a whole body, but this, who you are, is making up the full body of the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul's drawing this comparison to how each one of us is an individual, but a picture

of making up the whole body of Christ begs the question, if you don't know, and there are people that don't know, and that's okay, what is the body of Christ? The body of Christ is the people who belong to Christ Jesus. Not in church attendance or Christian behavior or Christian causes, but people who belong to Jesus. People whose souls have found their home in Christ. People have turned from their old life and been raised to new life in Christ Jesus, but how many of you know, when you come to know Jesus, you're not just saved from something, you're saved into something. You're not just saved from something, you're saved for something. God has a purpose beyond just saving you from punishment. Beyond just saving you from yourself, he saves us into something. You are saved and you are born again, you are regenerated into the body of Christ. And each part of the body has a role. So if you know Jesus, you have a part. If you know Jesus, you have a part, and every part is dependent on the other parts. See sometimes in our society, people say, well, I'm maturing my faith. don't really need the church, I don't need the body, I've grown, I know how to read the Word of God and digest it. It's not what the Bible says. The Bible says the more you grow in maturity, the more you grow in interdependence, not independence. Because you understand that each part is dependent on the others. And so how do we become a part of this body? Well, the Apostle Paul is clear. We know that faith, or that God's work in our lives, comes from grace, the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. That's how we come to believe in Him. There's only one man by which mankind might be saved, and that is through Jesus. So we are only a part of Christ's body if Christ has paid the penalty of our sins, and we've accepted that free sacrifice that He gave as payment for our sin. But the Apostle Paul takes it a step further, and he uses the symbol of water baptism as what creates union, or the joining together of the body of Christ. The first command we are given in Scripture after we turn to Jesus is

repent and be baptized. To repent and be baptized. In fact, the biblical support for baptism, water baptism, following your salvation, is so strong that if you proclaim to know Christ and refuse to be water baptized, you have to wonder if you've actually come to know Jesus. Because the obedience factor, the claim of the Gospels in the book of Acts is so strong that they repented and they were baptized. We read the story of 3,000 people getting saved in a day as Peter preaches, and what happens? They get saved, and then they march down, and they're all water baptized. It happens with Philip in the Ethiopian eunuch. Philip goes out into the wilderness, he meets a man, shares Jesus with him, the man comes to know Jesus, and Philip says, what should stop this guy from being baptized? And the answer is, we got to find water. It's not, he should clean up his life a little bit first, so when he's getting baptized, people look at him and know, okay, he really is making a change. That's not what the Bible says. It says he should repent and be baptized. In fact, Peter looked at Cornelius's house in the book of Acts when Cornelius's whole household is saved, and Peter looks at Cornelius, and he says, I order you to be water baptized. Now, we are free Americans with independence. We don't like to be ordered to do nothing, but you're not only a part of a kingdom of this world. You're a part of God's kingdom, and that kingdom has a king, and he has a word that is ultimate authority over our lives, and that word confronts us and says, here's what you must do, and we still must bend our knee and say, all hail King Jesus. Even if I feel like I should have been baptized a long time ago, and I'm embarrassed that people are gonna see me doing it now, even if I don't like to be wet in public, and I don't want people to see me, all hail King Jesus. The biblical support is strong, and the example of the early church is that they did it often when people came to believe in Christ, and when we do this, Paul says that we begin to drink from the same spirit. When you drink something, have you ever drank too much water, and you can feel it in your gut like, I am very full of water, or you've done the milk challenge, or the Sprite challenge, and you know, I'm full. This is what the Apostle Paul, the picture he's painting. When you come to

know Jesus, the Bible says you are filled up with God's Holy Spirit to the brim, that he fills your life. It's not just a letting go of your sin, but it's a receiving of God's Spirit. It's why we have something more in common than we go to church together. It's why people come up and go, Pastor Josh, you preached, and that message was exactly what I needed to hear. How did you know? And I look back, and I say, I didn't know, but I drink from the same spirit that you drink from, and the Spirit of God knows exactly what you need, and so he makes me say things that I didn't plan to say, but it was exactly what you needed. Why? Because we drink from the same spirit. It's why you walk in a room, and you see somebody that you've not met, but there's a way about them, and you think, I think they know Jesus, because you drink from the same spirit. This is what the Apostle Paul is saying. We are connected to each other by more than sitting in seats together, or going to events together. We are connected because we drink from the same spirit. We've been initiated into the body of Christ. This is too simple of an analogy, but getting water baptized is like putting on the jersey, saying, I'm on the team. I've been initiated into the body of Christ. Put me in, coach! Come on, there's no sixth man in the kingdom of God. There's no ride in the pond. in God's kingdom, sitting on the bench. If you have a jersey on, you're in the game. And this encourages me because the kingdom of darkness is not growing. Things may get darker, but God's kingdom is reproducing God's children every day in multitudes around the world. Like that fills my heart with hope. So the darkness may get more intense and the enemy may fight back, but we are being multiplied as children of the living God all across the world.

That's why today is such a day for celebration too. Last week in Dickinson, 22 people were baptized in water, initiated as children of God, followers of Jesus. And listen, the service order can get old, the songs can get old, the people can get old, but that never gets old. 37 people already this year have been baptized in water at the state penitentiary, which is pretty amazing. I mean, that is on top of a hundred others who have already been water baptized. 66 people at two o'clock today will be baptized outside here at the Bismarck campus. It's amazing. It's amazing what God is doing. And the Bible says when a person turns to Jesus, all of heaven rejoices. And so I'm encouraging you come back at two o'clock today, stand around the pool that's outside with other people. And when they come up out of the water, be the family of God around them that says, yeah, way to go. You're taking your first step. Obedience is hard, isn't it? And so you need other people that are looking at you going, way to go. You said yes, even in a difficult thing. The next question that we often ask, even as you read what the Apostle Paul writes is, how do I know my part in the body? And I'll give you two thoughts

about how to know your part in the body, one on serious and one serious. First one is don't be the armpit. Come on somebody, right? Let's go on the internet. You'll find some armpits in the body of Christ. They stink and they're only there to require maintenance. You know what I'm saying? Pastor Josh, that's not nice. I don't care, they deserve it. The second, the serious one is this. Each of us is defined in the body of Christ by the spiritual gifts that we bring and provide to the church. The spiritual gifts are a witness to the world, but they're a service to the church. Not to the church service, but to the church body. They can happen in the service, but more often it's the body of Christ. Everybody brings something to the table. Everybody walks into the room with something that God is speaking and doing and saying and leading, a gift that he's given, a leadership gift that sits inside of somebody. Each of us is defined in the body of Christ by the gifts that God puts in. The apostle Paul says, so eagerly, earnestly desire the spiritual gifts because a huge part of your identity in the kingdom of God is tied into how God has gifted you.

Not sitting under the gift of somebody else only, but how God has gifted you. If you don't know what your gift is, go to Discover, go online and Google it. Spiritual gifts assessment and take one. Begin to search the scriptures. Read the different places where the Bible talks about spiritual gifts. Ask people around you, where do you see my gift? For some, it's a speaking gift and it's prominent. For others, it's a mercy gift. I was just talking to some people in our office this week and I was like, man, I just really have a hard time in how I'm built and in how I lead, like weeping with those who weep. For some people though, like even when I'm walking with a family through grief, I'm like, man, I know I don't appear emotional, but I'm gonna walk out to my car in 10 minutes and I will be emotional. But other people, have you watched them? They get in there and they put their arm around that person and they're weeping together and praying for them, like this gift of mercy. I'm like, I don't have that in the same way, but I'm so glad that they do because every part is dependent on the others. And so whether it's a prominent gift or a gift that doesn't seem as prominent, maybe it's hospitality, maybe it's serving others,

maybe it's a gift of faith. You walk in the room and other people are wondering, will God? And you're like, God, you know he will. And you raise the temperature with the way you pray and the way that you believe God. See, fellow believers are equally valuable in the eyes of God and in their contributions to the function of a healthy church. Some are less visible than others, but that doesn't mean less important. The body requires a diversity of function, and every follower of Jesus has been given a gift to the contribution of the kingdom of God and to the body of Christ. The Apostle Paul writes about it this way, he says, if the foot says, since I'm not a hand, I'm not part of the body, it doesn't lose its membership in the body because of that. And if the ear says, since I'm not an eye, I'm not part of the body, it doesn't lose its membership in the body because of that. Do you see the redundancy, the point he's trying to make? If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If everybody was a preacher, who would do the other stuff? What part would do the hearing? If the whole body were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell? But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided. So don't even covet somebody else's gift, because God decided for you to be appointed and for you to be called and for you to be gifted exactly how he intended for you. The scripture says that he's the father of the heavenly lights, every good and perfect gift comes from him. He doesn't change like shifting shadows, but he's done it for a reason. Just as he decided if they were all the same member, where would the body be? So now there are many members, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, I don't need you, nor in turn can the head say to the foot, I don't need you. On the contrary, those members that seem to be weaker are essential, and those members

we consider less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our unpresentable members are clothed with dignity, but our presentable members do not need this. It's saying care about every gift, care about every part of the body, whether it's prominent or not. See, here the Apostle Paul writes why it's so important for you to show up not at church, but as the church. Come on, who knows there's a difference? Not just at church, but as the church. See, sometimes we live in a way that kind of says, the church doesn't need me. It seems like there's enough people serving coffee today. I don't know if they have kids covered, but I've been with my kids all week. They probably have somebody to sing. See, but actually, I think that's like an insecurity, because it says that you have a limited sense of your own value in the body of Christ, that maybe you don't actually understand you don't need a role, or a title, or a planning center request in order to show up as the church. Because, come on, how many of you know you can sit in the lobby for four services in Bismarck today and love people, and show up for people, and ask God to speak to people through you? See, the foot says, because I'm not a hand, I don't belong, or if the ear says, because I'm not an eye, I don't belong. What does this sound like? Well, I would serve, but I'm not ready, or I don't know what my part is, or someone else can do it better, or it doesn't really matter whether I'm there or not, or nobody will notice if I'm gone. This is actually a real issue. Like, studies show people come to church one to two times a month, and I know it's not about just being in the building, but that is the primary place where the body of Christ gathers. And there can get something into us that say, I don't think it really matters if I show up. I don't think it matters if I pray. But Paul's answer is, God put you in the body on purpose. He says in verse 18, but the matter of fact, God has placed each of the members of the body just as he decided, and that should change how we think about gathering with the church and as the church. See, if you think church is a show, then you attend when the show is convenient. If you're primarily watching a handful of gifted people do their part, then showing up every third week makes sense. But if you know church is a body, you understand

that your presence matters. That if I've been placed in the body of Christ and the Spirit of God has been placed in me for the good of others, then I don't come to just receive, I come to give something. Then I show up with an encouragement for somebody. Then I show up and I pray. Then I show up and I use my spiritual gift. Then I show up and I have a conversation with somebody who's maybe never been here before. Then I show up and I give an act of service. Or I show up with a word of wisdom. Or I show up with a generous gift to make sure the Bible is going all around the world. Or I show up with the listening ear. The members use their gifts, the body of Christ is strengthened, and Jesus is glorified. That's what scripture says. The members use their gifts, the body of Christ rises up in strength, all functioning together, and the Lord Jesus Christ is lifted up among us. And the nations change. And people come to know him. See, sometimes it's not that. Sometimes the second reason is that I don't need the church. This is an overdeveloped sense of independence. A limited view of the church's value. The Apostle Paul in verse 21 says, the eye can't say to the hand, I don't need you, nor in turn can the head say to the foot, I don't need you. See, both the phrases, they don't need me, and I don't need them are wrong. The second one often sounds like, I can follow Jesus on my own. I can watch church online when I feel like it. I'll catch the replay. But I don't need relationships with other believers.

I have my Bible. A lot of cults were started with one person with a Bible on their own. I'm just saying, we need each other to hold each other accountable. I've got my Bible, I've got podcasts, I've got worship music, I'm doing fine spiritually, but a hand disconnected from the body is not independent, it is dying. It's not disconnected. It is disconnected. It's not independent, it's dying. It's not regrowing anything. It's important. We're a part of the body of Christ. We sometimes treat independence, again, as a sign of maturity, but the Bible says, don't just attend the body, belong to the body. Show up, know people, be known. Can I just be honest? Sometimes, oh, King, sometimes I write the message in the wrong order. I'll give away the ending. I went to my freshman year of college, and I, many of you know my story, but I had been around religion and Jesus my whole life, and I kind of went through this point where I was like, I just want to hang out with my friends. I want to kind of do my own thing. So I still went to church,

really out of a sense of obligation rather than I want to meet Jesus and the people of Jesus. And I'd sit in the back row, and they'd play that last worship song, and it was like, I'm in the back row. That means it's time to go, and I would sneak out before anybody could catch me because I didn't want anybody asking me about what I read in the Bible that week. I didn't want anybody asking me to serve. I didn't want anybody like catching me in some casual church conversation. I just wanted to introvert in and introvert out and not be, I didn't want, I definitely didn't want anybody to come up and go, I think you're living a complacent life. I was like, la, la, la. And I went home, and I spent the summer farming, and just sitting in a tractor baling hay. And I just remember the Holy Spirit asking me, you spent this whole year alone. Now you're sitting in a tractor alone. How about your sophomore year? Do you want to be alone? You haven't grown at all. I just felt such conviction. And I came back to school, and I thought, I need spiritual family. And many of you know the story, but I went to a college ministry's root beer kegger,

because that's what Christians do to be relevant. There's like 200 people there, and there's this table with people filling up root beer. And I stood at the end of the table, and I met 200 people in one night. Because I thought, if I meet 200, the chances are at least 1% of them might want to be my friend. And I need to be a friend so that I can get some friends. And I'm saying, at the end of the day, being a disciple of Jesus and getting into spiritual family is not anybody else's responsibility except your own. Your spirit is your responsibility. And what you need in spiritual family is for you to go and find, and go and build, and go and get. So show up, know people, be known, use your gifts, receive from others, serve, encourage, carry each other's burdens. Let other people carry your burdens. Because the truth is, you need the body, and the body needs you, amen? You need the body, and the body needs you. You're not just saved from something, you're saved into a body. You're saved for the work of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul closes this way. He says, concerns of other people. You know, just this week I was thinking about people in

our church. One sent their first child off to college. Difficult. One diagnosed with cancer that's worse than they expected. Difficult. One that lost their spouse the other day. So difficult. But I'm not worried about any of them. You know why? Because they're in relationship. They have spiritual family around them. They have people who are praying for them. People who are supporting them. People who are sending meals to their home. This is the important. We are dependent on one another. So what do we do? What is the remedy? I'm going to give you three thoughts. They're not on the screen about why the body of Christ matters and why we gather. The first one is this. It matters because when we gather together we worship God. Amen? We worship him not just through singing but by gathering. Your worship started when you got in the car and you said I'm going to the house of the Lord today. God said they carved out time. They put it in their schedule. They prioritize being with my people. That is an act of worship in and of itself. How do we worship? First and foremost be in relationship with Jesus. Be in true relationship with Jesus. Like turn to him. Adjust your heart around his word. Be in relationship with Jesus. And if you are, your natural response will be to submit to him. If you come into a relationship with Jesus, the natural response, how do I know the voice of the Lord? The voice of the Lord first and foremost comes from the Word of God. So if you meet Jesus today or you met Jesus in the last couple months and you've not been water baptized, the voice of God is clear to you. I was talking to Pastor Noah who preached here on Wednesday and we were talking about how many times we want to know, well what does God want to do with my life 10 years down the road? What am I becoming? But the Bible says the the steps of the righteous are ordered by the Lord. Not the long-term strategic plan of the righteous. The next step is ordered by the Lord. So Peter says if you know Jesus I'm ordering you to be baptized because the steps of the righteous are ordered by the Lord. If you do the next step, God will lead you to the right place 10 years from now. So worry less about the place. Even if you're a junior in high school and you're like, what in the world am I gonna do a year from now? Worry less

about the place and worry more about the next step. Worry more about obedience. And you know what? I have just found that God will not let your foot slip if you do that. You'll be like Moses and you'll look back and you'll say, I think it was the Lord, I think he's calling me to go, but God's faithfulness proves I'm on the right track. He did it before, he'll do it again. He'll lead you in the plan that he has. Worship God with your life. Be obedient to what he's calling you to. Take the next step. If you've not been baptized, get baptized. If you've not immersed yourself in spiritual family, we're not running connect groups in the fall to say we need another program. Hopefully people come to our connect group program. Connect groups are because you need spiritual family and it's an opportunity. I was praying over the last 21 days of prayer. You know my favorite prayer? Lord, these are your people. You deal with them. Come on, every parent, Lord, these are your children. Everybody with a 15 year old, Lord, this is your teenager. It's true. Lord, they're your people. I can lead you to water, but I don't have to stick your face in it and say drink. I just get to encourage you. Help yourself and let other people help you. We drink from the same spirit. There's a group for you. There's a place for you. Our worship is not just singing and lifting our hands. It's our obedience. It's the work we get to do. It's getting baptized. It's going to church. It's connecting the spiritual family. It's serving others. The body of Christ gathers to worship, but the body of Christ also gathers so we can equip God's people for the works of service that he has for us. I'm giving you a pathway for how you can begin to walk in greater obedience to the Lord. If you've been in neutral for a long time in your walk with Jesus, there is a window of opportunity right now that if you want to go get after it, you can go get after it. If you're tired of living the way you've been living, now is the time. Say, as for me in my house from here on out, we're serving Jesus. Come on, my friend TJ. They got in a baptism tank surrounded by his family. Today is the day to shift. And I just, I truly, I wanna pause and just say thank you

to every person in our church who's said, I'm gonna lead a connect group or I'm gonna lead other people. Because you really are facilitating spiritual community for our church and for people. And I know that's something I can't do on my own. That's something our staff can't do on our own. It's the people of God who say, God has done something in me and I wanna help others see God's great work in their lives. I mean, in Jesus name, may you be refreshed as you've refreshed others. And may God give you wisdom and insight as you lead others in this next season. I'm so grateful for people who are in our church who are leading others in discipleship. If you're here and you're saying, Pastor Josh, I've been baptized, I'm in spiritual family, then you gotta start serving the kingdom with the gifts God has put inside of you. Again, this is not a recruitment Sunday. This is literally the pattern of scripture, of how people grew in their faith. We just have programs and things that equip people. At Evangel, we call it heart and soul. It's three gatherings in October. We commission people into the works of service that God has prepared for them. Literally at our church, if you're a follower of, today you can become a follower of Jesus.

You can get baptized in the next couple of weeks. You can step into spiritual family starting on September 13th when groups start, or before that by just hanging out in the lobby with people, you can go to heart and soul and be commissioned into serving God's kingdom. I'm telling you, the fast track is here. And there's a great opportunity. And not only what we do over the next couple of months can change our church and our community, what you do over the next couple of months can change your life and your family. And that's not an over-promise because Jesus is in it. Yeah. Because it's honoring him, it's obeying him. It's being instead with him. All this is available on the tap tags, on the seat back in front of you, it's on the connect card. The steps are obvious. You just gotta say, I'm gonna drink from the spirit. I'm gonna be obedient to what God has called me to. And I believe the end result is gonna be that we're a church who not only worships God and equips people, but we get to reach the world for Jesus. It's what he's done through us before. I believe it's what he wants to continue to do through us. I know over the coming months, this service, 9.30 at Evangelist is gonna be jam-packed with people. I see a lot of faces of people in this room that are mature in your faith.

And I'm just telling you, I need you to serve. I need you to help other people. I might need you to give up your seat and go at a less convenient time. I have zero apologies about asking mature people to do mature things so that there's room for people who are not mature to have the best possible access to the message of Jesus. We're gonna reach the world. We're doing that. We're raising up MLC students. We're kicking off a new class this fall of students that we believe are called into ministry and we're gonna help equip them. We're doing new city reach outreaches. In fact, in Dickinson last week, we were at a school. We're going back to the schools, letting our schools know we're not just a church in our communities. We're a church for our communities. We're coming to get you. We're coming to support you. This is a hairdresser giving a kid a haircut so that kid can, some kids are not fortunate enough to show up to school with a brand new sneakers and a nice haircut. And so our church is coming around them. We're equipping teachers, we're equipping students and we're helping kick off the year. We're doing it tomorrow in Mandan. We're doing it September 14th in Bismarck.

We wanna reach our community for Jesus. We don't just wanna tell them about Jesus. We wanna love them like Jesus, amen. And not to mention all the work that I'm believing God for to do through us, through Legacy Makers. And I'll just be honest with you. We have a $3 million goal. That's what God put in my heart for this year of what God might do through us, of people who give above and beyond for causes all over the world. We're about a million dollars into it. It's only a few months to go. But I believe that like scripture says, what we do for the nations and how generous this church has been is a huge part of why God has been generous to us. And so I just believe that we can continue. One of our organizations, partner organizations, rescued more people from human trafficking in one bust this last month than they have in their history, almost 2000 people because of our partnership. And so, you are the body of Christ and every one of you has a part in it. And so my appeal is take your next step. If today you need to surrender your life to Jesus for the first time. All who call on his name will be saved. Take your next step.

If you know Jesus, but you've not been water baptized, take your next step. If you're sitting around spiritual family, but you don't have spiritual family, take your next step. If you want to begin to use your gifts and serve, take your next step. Whatever it is, your yes can create a cascading effect in your family, in your church, in your community, in your nation, in your world. And again, that's not an over-promise because Jesus is in it. Amen. Father, we thank you for your presence. Lord, I thank you that your still small voice can speak to each of us right now and let us know our part. Amen. Come on, there's people all across this room, people watching online, people at our campuses, that right now you just need to give Jesus your yes. You might have to wrestle some pride to the ground. You might have to wrestle that your yes to Jesus means no to something that your flesh wanted. I just believe there's some couples, if you've been talking about a step of obedience for a while, something Jesus has called you to do, and I just believe that now is the time. There's things as a church collectively

that we're wrestling over, praying and fasting, believing God and wanting to give him our yes. Amen. So Lord, we submit ourselves to you, we submit our church to you. We don't just wanna come to church, we wanna be your church. Open our ears to hear, open our eyes to see, open our hearts to conceive what you're speaking and what you're doing and what you wanna do among us.
