Gifted! - Lesson 8: Unleashing the Proclaiming Gifts - Prophecy

So this is a manuscript and I'll be taking that and getting it all the stuff I got to do next, which I'm learning along the way, kind of shooting from the hip on that. But I got some guys going to help me with that, try to figure out what I do next. So let's go ahead and get started. And then let me just kind of say that tonight, what I want to do is get us started in this area of prophecy. And then what I want us to do is we're going to activate it. Okay, so I'm only going to teach for about 30 minutes. And then we're going to take in all those 1200 cards that we had up here on the cross. Well, we're going to activate the gifts and we're going to pray for God to release miracles. So we're going to do that after about 630, I'll give them to you 635, something like that. And then what we're going to do is want you to take home some of those that you have and just pray for them all the way through Easter. Okay, so we'll be doing that later on. But let's go ahead and tonight we're in lesson eight. And it's I've titled it unleashing the proclaiming gifts and we're going to be focused on prophecy tonight. And again, I have up there just kind of what what my goal is is we're together in this course is to help believers understand and unleash the gifts of the Holy Spirit into our fallen world for the building up of the body of Christ. So it's most understanding and unleashing is really where I want to be. And so in our question at the top of the outline, if you have that there is what are the proclaiming gifts and how do we unleash them? So we're going to be looking at that each one of those. And I'll be talking about probably not going to finish with prophecy this week, but finish it next week. And then the last week we'll focus on tongues and interpretation. And I'm looking forward to that. That'll be fun. So let me go on into 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Let's read it again and just look at all of these again. The nine gifts here says to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good for the one is given through the Spirit, the utterance of wisdom and to another, the utterance or a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing or healings by the one Spirit, to another workings of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one in the same Spirit who abortions to each one individually as He wills. And so we've looked at that and talked about just the thing I've given you before, talked about that along the way. And so we've looked at the first group and the second group and now we're in the third group. And so tonight we're going to begin and I want to make a statement because I believe

if you grab this and understand what's really going on, I think it's going to change the way you think about your own faith. And I just say it this way is I believe that there is a conspiracy against hearing the voice of God, not only hearing but understanding and expressing that voice. You find it, it's rampant everywhere and it's not new. It's something that has been around ever since early in the church. It has always been here. You know, whenever you think about and know, and I've talked to you about this before, that as the church began to develop and religion began to infiltrate and I would say poison the church in many ways, the ruler, this is the problem whenever men get in charge is that we want to control things and we get on a power hunger and we want to try to say we can figure this out ourselves. And that's when that happens, what do we do? Well, we tend to silence the voice of the higher power and we tend to say, well, we're going to be the ones that decide. And so early on the church, as it began to grow, you can imagine when it started, the world basically they were in, spoke Greek, but after a couple hundred years that changed. However, the church didn't and the church kept the New Testament, the copies of it in Greek. They also had it in Old Testament in Greek as well with Septuagint, but then they also had the was a big language then. And so the church decided that it couldn't be translated in any other languages. And it even came up and said this is scriptural. How would it be scriptural? Well, because when Jesus was on the cross, what did Pilate do? He had put above him Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. You remember what languages it was put in? Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. So the church decided, well, those are the only perfect languages, so we can't translate it in any other languages. And so quickly what happened was the common person who didn't speak Latin or Greek or Hebrew couldn't have the word of God with them. And this began, in fact, it was so bad I've told you before about the things that happened as a result. It began to continue on in that.

Same way with the gifts of the Spirit, the same way with prophecy. Now on the other side, you had people that were writing things, claiming it was Scripture, so that would be false as well, that would be equally false. And you had the same thing with people claiming they were prophets, and they weren't, which is false as well. So you got this conspiracy against us hearing and knowing the word of God from both fronts. You got one front wanting to keep everything silent about the word of God, and you can't have this, and even today it's very difficult for just a common person, even though you've got a Bible in your hand, to be able to truly ask the Lord to guide you because we have literally bound ourself in certain theologies, that I say, theoreologies, that bind us from really listening and hearing the word of God. That's why we need the Holy Spirit to guide us and to all the truth. Jesus made it pretty clear that He would be the one that would guide us and to all the truth. That is not to bind you into believing certain ways, but hopefully help unleash you to hear God's voice, read God's word, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us what I feel like my responsibility. And I can help you along the way. There are certain trappings you have to be careful of, but on the other hand, we need to know that that is a reality. So let me just say that first of all, and you've heard me say this, that I've told you this many times, that the most often quoted statement of Jesus in the New Testament stated 15 times. In fact, here's the 15 references that are found in the New Testament. And all of them say who he who has ears to hear, let him hear. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Jesus said those, in fact, they have other times I didn't even put in there because he said, having ears, they're not hearing, having eyes, they're not seeing. I didn't even include those. So in other words, Jesus felt like it was important that you and I could hear the Word

of God through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Whenever we go on, I find that whenever you read the New Testament, not only does he say those, but it's unbelievable how many times were commanded, urged, and commissioned to prophesy. I mean, it's everywhere. You find it over and over, and so what I want to do is try to help us just gain a better understanding about the prophetic. And you've heard me say before, and I'll say it again, probably tonight. There's the prophetic, and there's the pathetic, and we have to know the difference and be able to discern which one we're supposed to be following. So tonight, as we're going to be looking at this, these are those three that I talked about. We'll just do the first one, hopefully, but I just want to ask you a question. Whenever you think about a prophet or prophecy, what's the picture that kind of comes to mind? You know, whenever I think about it, a lot of times I think about maybe something like that. Well, this guy, in fact, I had a lady, I know I've told you this, I had a lady long long time ago, 20 plus years ago. She, her family, in fact, her husband just came on staff with us in Alabama. But she made the statement, which a lot of people I've heard make, which is false, and I did, I was just mean enough, I guess, back then, I said it, but they were overeating with us. She said, "Well, you know, I have the gift of prophecy. I just see everything black and white and I just tell it. And I said, well, you know, you really ought to go read the prophets because you don't find any of them not weeping as they're proclaiming God's word. They weren't mean. And so many of us, whenever we think about things like prophecy, we think about those.

And many of you may have grown up in church settings where somebody would come up and say, you know, thus sayeth the Lord and try to say something to you as though, you know, that God told them to tell you that. And personally, I disagree with that. All right? I personally disagree with that because I believe if you're saved, you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you. Now, I can tell you, I feel like God wants me to share this with you. But then you ask the Holy Spirit if it's what God has for you. Now, that's personally where I come from and come down to in that. So as we come to this and we think about it tonight, we're going to look at prophecy. And I want to try to break it down in some ways that to understand, and I just say it this way, that God's voice still speaks. Our God is a talker. If I write another book sometime, I hope that's one of my and right that God's a talker because we have literally as a church, sadly done everything we can. In an attempt to say we're protecting God's word, we're literally suffocating God's word. And that's the danger that we have to watch out for. And so anyway, the voice of God still echoes today. He's not distant.

He's not withdrawn. God is near. He is here with the God we serve is not too great that we can't get to him as the Muslims claim. Our God is so great, he can come near and be with us. And so as we look at this, we're going to talk about how we can walk in the idea. Now honestly, prophecy has also been mishandled. It's been misunderstood. And sadly, it's even been manipulated by people in order to kind of take control or have control. So tonight as we look at it, again in 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verse 10 says, "For to one is given through the Spirit, prophecy." And so as we come at that and we look at this, we want to see what it is. And so before we get in to just kind of the nuts and bolts of it in our outline, I do want to share a couple of things because I want us to understand how vitally important this gift is for the church. And as we look at it to see that again, the very first sermon after the coming of the Holy Spirit was preached by Peter, and you remember what he said in the sermon? He said this in Acts chapter two. He says, "And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall do what?" Prophecy. And your young men shall see visions

in your old men dream dreams, even on my male servants and female servants in those days, I will pour out my spirit and they shall do what? Okay, did you notice that of all the gifts, that's the one that was mentioned in the very first sermon that was ever preached to the church? I would say it's a pretty even big deal, wouldn't you? I think it's important. In fact, I've heard recently some guys talking about it and they were saying some things. Well, after the church got established, they didn't need that gift as much because we started heaven's scripture. And I'm like, that's a lie. First of all, I believe it's a total lie because if that were true, the apostles wouldn't have made such a big deal about it when they wrote the scripture 30, 40, 50 years after the ascension of Jesus. In other words, it was still a big deal and it was still essential for the church. And I believe it still is today when it's used properly. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 14, verse one, says, "Pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy." Did you hear what he says there? Those two, again, I've told you this before, the two directives or commands or imperatives are to pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts. And then he says, "Especially,

especially that you may prophesy." So I think they're pretty important, right? So as we're gonna look in this, let me just give you some things that we can start in and hey, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go as far until I get to the place where I wanna stop and then we'll pick up from there more willing next week, okay? So the first thing I want us to look at is what I'm just calling the nature of prophesying. [BLANK_AUDIO] And I'm just saying it this way. It's just something to get in our head and just simple way of saying it. But basically, prophecy is a revelation, not a script. Prophecy is a revelation. Prophecy in the New Testament is vastly different from that in the Old Testament and it really is. In the Old Testament, the prophets literally were God's mouthpieces. And actually, there's some great books. If you're interested in reading, God by the name of Wayne Grudem, just an incredible, incredible man of God and an unbelievable theologian. But he actually did his PhD dissertation on prophecy in the New Testament and went back to the Old and basically in all of it. And I think it makes sense that as the prophet like Jeremiah or Isaiah or Ezekiel, as they were prophesying, literally,

they were literally speaking. The Holy Spirit was carrying them along is what the New Testament says about it. As they were proclaiming God's word as scripture, God's word, in other words, does that make sense? It was written down and became scripture. We see that same office, if you will, with the apostles. So when the church began to grow and develop, the New Testament we have, it's all, they linked every one of them. They had to link back to one of the apostles. And if it didn't link back to one of the apostles, in other words, there were some other good writings that were written, but if it didn't link back to one of the apostles, they did not declare it to be scripture. Does that make sense? So the way they talk about it is the Old Testament prophet and the New Testament apostle carried an office of proclaiming, declaring scripture, if you will, if that makes sense. And so none of us do that, all right. We're not proclaiming anything that's equal to scripture. So we need to just kind of see that the Bible talks about that and we need to make sure that we understand that. So in the New Testament, we see a shift that takes place. The apostles, they were the ones that, you don't find that term in the Old Testament like that, but they were the ones that Jesus had set aside that they were the ones to carry and drive

really the divine authority, even in Ephesians chapter two where it talks about us following the prophets and apostles and it's talking about scripture as we do that. And so as we come to it, we see that and need to know that. And so, but now prophets and prophecy today, 1 Corinthians 14, 3 says it this way. It says on the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people and here's what we do for their up building and encouragement and consolation. We'll look at that in just a minute. So if you have, I didn't put this in your notes, I'll have to put it in next week. But basically, this is what I'm saying it is. It's a supernatural utterance given by God to an individual in a language known to the person. I'll give you that next week, okay? I didn't put it in your outline. And basically it's this, that prophecy is simply this. Prophecy is telling something that God has spontaneously brought to mind, something the Holy Spirit brings to our mind and we really comes to our spirit and then clarifies in our mind and then we proclaim it. It's not preaching, it's not teaching. It's not any kind of doctrinal exposition. It is God speaking to us. Another thing, prophecy is the spirit impressing something on a believer's heart. A word, a picture, a sense that is then shared in human language. Now I know that in here probably many of you

have experienced that, have done that, have been part of that. I've had that joy and privilege many, many times in ministry. It's one of the hallmarks of how you minister I believe is you're asking for the Lord because God knows what they need, not me, but he does. You're not making stuff up. You're asking the Holy Spirit to guide you. And I'm telling you there's times many times whenever I'm asking him to guide me and you know, I'm still not sure. And I just say something like this, you know what? I feel like maybe the Lord wants me to share this with you. Does that bear, does your spirit bear witness with that? And if it does, praise God. And so as we come to this, though, we need to understand that New Testament prophecy is fallible. It is. I've heard people say, well, you know, if they say anything wrong, we're supposed to do, you know, don't ever listen to them again or something like that. That was said to the Old Testament prophets. But the Bible is pretty clear that we're humans, the Holy Spirit is going to flow through us. But we're going to, we're still fallible people. In fact, he says in 1 Corinthians chapter 14, verse 29, it says this, "Let two or three prophets speak and let the others look what it says." Why? What is said? What does that mean to weigh? What is said? That means to test it. Check and see if what's being said is it lines up with Scripture, they evaluate it with, what does it, does it, does you bear witness with it? Is it something that's going on that you feel is also from the Lord? And so as we come to that and we think about it, we need to see that the nature of it is it's a revelation and not some kind of wrote script we're coming up with. But in, as we share it with somebody, we're sharing it literally knowing that, hey, this may be me. But I feel like it's the Lord. 1 Corinthians chapter 13, verse 9 also talks about this.

It says, "For we know in part and we prophesy in part." That's what we do. That's where we are. In fact, what's almost, I think for some people, it's kind of a, not a downer. I won't say that. I hope it elevates your faith. But I remember years ago, this is a long, long time ago, it was just using me in those things a lot. And he still does, but it was, it had been using me in those. And I had a guy come up to me and ask me, and he was tongue in cheek, but still, you know, if I would have said, yeah, he'd have probably went, oh, it doesn't surprise me. He said, I just want to ask a question. Wherever you get with God and you're just right there with him in the middle of something, do you start levitating or anything? And here's what happens. And even some of you, I know, think, well, Brother David can do that, but I never can. And that's the lie. How many of you are saved? And how many of you have the Holy Spirit? Keep your hand up. You better keep them hands up. Now, listen, some of you didn't put your hand up on the first one. You can't be saved and have the Holy Spirit. All right, hand stays up. All right. Well, hey, listen. So here's the thing, the same Holy Spirit that lives in you lives in me. And he wants to flow through you just like me. And so as we're walking in this, what happens to us sometimes is we create this elevated, almost mystical idea about the gifts. And I have found them to be incredibly normal. I mean, they're supernatural, but they flow through humans. And so as they flow through us, it's now, listen, it changes people. It rocks their world. But at the same time, it's not weird and just kind of like, you know, like the same way with tongues that I'll talk about in a couple of weeks. It's not like somebody goes into a trance. I mean, that's paganism. The Holy Spirit wants to flow through us because the kingdom of God is, we are the connection point with God's kingdom and the earth. And he wants to bring his kingdom through us. And so that's with prophecy, it's the same way. And we need to see, but in the middle of it, though, it's not a script. It's just God speaking through us. And as he does, we wind up messing it up sometime. And so we have to keep in a place where we're humble about it. And I'll talk more about that in just a minute. Let me try to see if I can get the second one. The purpose of prophecy. So what's the purpose? Well, it's real clear. It's real simple. It's these things. I just said this way to build, strengthen, and console. Prophecy is not a gift to impress people. It's a gift to minister grace, to manifest God's grace into the lives of other people. It's to build them up. Here's what it says again in 1 Corinthians 14 and 3. It says, on the other hand, the one who

prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. What does it mean? of someone with focus on the process involved. In other words, the Holy Spirit will give you a word that will literally speak life into someone that literally projects them into a direction that maybe they're inside, they might believe it, but they don't believe it. And it does that, it's not just being their cheerleader, it's speaking life into them. The second one is encouragement. And it literally just means, to do this, it just means to cause someone to be filled with courage. It's rising up into who they are. But then there's the third one there. And it's literally one of those that is just, it's called consolation. It means to bring comfort to someone when somebody is broken, or they're wounded, or they're down, it literally brings consolation. It consoles, and the Holy Spirit wants to console them to speak into them life. And it just, it becomes like that balm of just covering the pain with a word that is true and powerful. And so as we think about that, and we look at that, we think about those things, let me go on, I think I can do one more, and then we'll, all right. Let me go to this, I'm the practice of prophecy. How do you practice it? This is where I think, I have found,

if in this way I'm gonna say it, when we're putting it into practice, how do we practice prophecy is, and I would just say this, prophecy balances humility and boldness. It's a balance of those two things. We function in a very humble way. We know it's not us, but one of the dangers is a false humility that refuses to step out and share a word, well, what if I'm wrong? Well, if you speak in a humble type way, and just say, man, I feel, I really feel like God may want me to share this with you. And if they go, I don't know, you know, and they're not really sure about it. Okay, that's all right. I mean, it's okay, but I believe the two go together. These two literally are what must walk hand in hand for this gift to flow in a way that glorifies God. In Philippians chapter two, verse three, it says this, do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility, count others more significant than yourselves. Listen, when you're walking in this kind of gifting, you're not lording over, or you're not saying, hey, you know, I know you don't really know what you're doing, but I know what you should be doing. Man, that is arrogance and pride and demonic. But when you come into it realizing, man, God loves them. And I believe he wants to share a word with them,

and you just feel it in here. It comes with humility, knowing that, hey, I may be wrong. I'm just trying to follow the Lord and just trying to ask him to work through me. In 1 Corinthians, it says this in verses 14, in chapter 14, 1 Corinthians 14, 29 through 33, it says, listen to how it says to do it. Let two or three prophets speak and let the others weigh what is said, which is talked about that. If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. Notice how humility's functioning? It's saying, okay, you go ahead and speak it. It's not like you're, hey, I got a right to speak. It's my turn, you know, that kind of stuff, but it's coming at it in that way. For you can all prophesy one by one so that all may learn and all be encouraged, and the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophecy. Again, that's a place of humility. In other words, it's with one another. We function together in this. For God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. And in all the churches, as in all the churches of the saints. And so as we come to it, we must understand that a prophet must walk in humility. It's essential that you are functioning from a broken place, not from a prideful, arrogant place.

And this is what sadly has killed a lot of the gifts of the spirit is arrogant, unspiritual people that know how to turn a phrase, get up and talk. And like they know everything they're talking about. And man, the enemy is just using them and it's breathing division and all kinds of problems. And we can't have that. And so then on the other side, you got a whole group that just shut it all down and say, well, we're just gonna teach the Bible. Well, let me tell you, Jesus didn't give us God's word. He gave us God's word to be lived and to be activated. And he brought his kingdom here, not just so we could hold on to one day we get to heaven, but he brought his kingdom and dwells in us to flow through us to bring the river of life to those around us. That's what we're called to do. That's the church. And so as we think about that, as we look at that, as we come to that, we need to walk in this in a humility that functions for the glory of God. It's what we do. We practice this idea of prophecy. And as we're doing it, it functions out of an overflow of humility, but also with boldness. You're gonna have to step out. I can tell you, listen, pastoring a church, everybody thinks, oh, well, you know, ain't it? I've told you, I don't really know what I'm doing.

And let me tell you when it's weird is whenever you're having a time where we feel like God's wanting to move maybe through prayer times or through some things like that and you're going, I feel like this is what God wants to do, but I may be wrong. Well, if I believe in feeling here that's what God wants to do and I don't do it, but it is God, I've blown it, right? If I do it and it's not God, most of the time I hadn't heard anything. And so I'm trying to walk the same way with you as a believer, we're trying to walk in that brokenness. But also boldness. And as we do it, it all flows through love. It's just what God does. First Corinthians chapter 13, verse two, listen to what it says. And if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. You see how it's grounded on that? It flows out of love for other people. All right, I want to go ahead and stop now because I want to get us. Now here's what we're going to do. We're going to get into groups and I need and boy, this is going to be fun. Get into groups and we need how many, 27? Is that what you said? 27 groups.

All right, go ahead and let's stand up and get in those groups. If you can, we're going to hand out cards and you're saying, well, what if we only have 25? Well, I don't know what to say at that point, but go ahead and get in groups and then stay in here because we're going to pray. All right. All right, get in our groups. (crowd murmuring) Okay, you said, well, I don't know these people, that's all right. Introduce yourself. (crowd murmuring) Okay. We got groups there, are you getting them out? Ben's passing out the cards and then what I want you to do in your group, if you've got cards, the prayer cards, far from God cards, take and whoever has them in your hand, divvy them out to the group, a kind of equal amount. So I don't know how many are in there, but if there's like 50 in there, each person in your group gets X number until every person has some. How many more have we have? Okay, Christy, do you have any more left? She has one left. Elaine, do you have any more? You have four?

Okay, who needs some more cards? A big group, give them some cards, and you can have two groups. Everybody should have about around seven or eight cards each. I mean, you all got like 40. Yeah, that's a small group. Hi, you guys are ready. All right, we got how many more? Yeah, give them some more cards. Do you have any more big groups? How many big groups only have one stack? 'Cause they're all evenly divided. [BLANK_AUDIO] Okay, go ahead and hand them all out. Okay, here's what I want you to do. Everybody, have you divvied them out? Almost, yeah, just got a new pack. All right, everybody have some cards? All right. Okay, now listen, I told you that what I wanted to do when we come here is I want us to understand the gifts, but also activate the gifts. I want you to remember that cards you have in your hand are real people, real people that are far from God, most of the names that you have in your hand, unless they give their life to Christ, are gonna spend eternity separated from God in hell. I have to think like that, or I'll just buzz through them. So I have to go there. Second thing, every card you have,

somebody in our church was burdened for those people enough to write their names on a card and have them put on a cross, okay? Now, some of your cards may say myself. Some of you have cards and it may be hard to read. Some of you have cards that have one name and some of you have cards that are like, got 40 names. Now, every Tuesday, we have taken as a staff, taken those cards. I've taken about 50 at a time and just get with God. And I'm gonna lead you in a prayer because we're gonna ask God, the Spirit, to gift us so that we literally are not just looking at names on a card, but we're connecting with heaven and with the person and we're bringing heaven to earth, okay? And then what I want you to do is we're gonna take time to pray and then I want you to take your cards with you and I would just ask you, I mean, this is a Wednesday night group, you know what I'm saying? This is us, I want you to take it. And from now through Sunday, just covenant with God, you're gonna lift your people up because I promise you, calls back here, call God's giving you a word for Sunday and most Saturday night too, for Easter. There are many of you here that have been inviting people. We're gonna have a bunch of people that are gonna be here that the Father has been drawing them. And I believe the Father is even drawing us to do this tonight. So let me pray for us.

And so I just want you to be ready, okay? It's Father, we come to you and I thank you, Father, for the honor that you give us, the joy and the privilege you give us to join with heaven for the souls of men and women, boys and girls. Father, we've already seen some that have gotten saved. We've also seen some that have passed away. So Father, we know that this is not a trivial, trite matter, this is an eternal relationship and eternal reality. And so Holy Spirit, we don't know what's going on in every name, on every card that we're holding in our hands, but you do. So I just ask that you would gift us. So right now, just ask the Holy Spirit to gift you with words of wisdom, ask Him. Ask Him to gift you with words of knowledge, to know things that you wouldn't know outside of heaven talking to you. About each one. Ask Him to gift you with prophecy. Ask Him to gift you with faith. I listened a big one in some of these. Ask Him to gift you with the discerning of spirits. Many of the names you have on your card are literally under demonic attack and oppression. Ask Him to gift you with gifts of healing. It's like the Roman centurion that told Jesus all you have to do is speak the word. And in Christ seated with Him in the heavenlies,

that they would be released through your prayers, with tongues and interpretation. Father, I believe this is a holy moment. You've allowed us to enter into a sacred trust with you. So right now, I pray that you would guide us along, carry us along, that we might join an intercession for each one of these people that you have, I believe, have sovereignly given each person. Those aren't just names on a card. They are a call to intercede. And so Father, right now in Jesus' name, I pray that you would remind us every day to pray for them. I pray that more than some are gonna put them in their cars and pray for each one of them on the way to work, on the way home, gonna be praying for them throughout the day. But God, we're asking for you to open heaven that our prayers will reach your throne room and that we will join with you as you are drawing, Father, you're drawing so many of these.
