So let's look at verse 10, let's start there. He says, I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead. I want to suffer with Him, sharing in His death, so that in one way or another, I will experience the resurrection from the dead. What he's talking to is that absolute perfection when we see Jesus Christ face-to-face, and he says, so I'm on this journey,

but look what he says in verse 12. I don't mean to say that I've already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection, but I press on to possess the perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing, forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling you. He is calling you to follow His game plan. Here's the problem. Some believers aren't even in the game. Okay? So, my message today is this. ♪ I gotta get my head in the game ♪ ♪ You gotta get your, get your, get your, get your head ♪ ♪ In the game ♪ ♪ I gotta get my head in the game ♪ ♪ You gotta get your, get your, get your head ♪ ♪ In the game ♪ ♪ Come on, get my head in the game ♪ ♪ You gotta get your, get your, get your, get your head in the game ♪ All right, that's a nod to all my young millennials, my Gen Z's. Of course, Jesus wouldn't listen to that kind of music. I'm just kidding. They all know the song, don't you? Get your head in the game.

The problem is some believers do not have their head in the game. And the reason why they don't have their, and I'm talking people who once said Jesus is my Lord. The reason they don't have their head in the game is because the question is, is God really in your heart? Because the moment you really start pursuing the heart of Jesus Christ, you will be in the game and you'll say, Jesus, what do you really want from me? Because what Jesus doesn't want is he doesn't want your, listen, he doesn't just want your attention. Jesus wants your affection. And the problem is a lot of believers give Jesus their attention, some give it twice a day. Year on Easter and Christmas They give it just got a little tension when there's a death in the family when they're going through trouble They may pull out a psalm might read something, but Jesus wants you to go beyond just periodically having your attention He wants to have your affection and that's why Paul said is to know him It's a deep word of going deeper in God to know every detail about him Because he loved me so much. I wouldn't know him, but there are some Christians everybody. I'm just gonna tell you they're not in the game In fact we have a few Christian football terms and plays for some of our Christian friends that are not in the game For instance like bench warmer, that's those who do not sing pray work or do anything but sit Some Of them have this term staying in the pocket, that's what happens to a lot of money that should be given to the Lord's work Some played it this morning

And then there's the quarterback sneak people quietly leaving during my altar call I'm I'm here all night folks. I'm here all night My favorite is sudden death what happens to the attention span of the congregation if the preacher goes overtime Okay, we're having a little bit of fun here Don't don't write me a letter because I'll send you my sermon series how to overcome the offended spirit But when Paul's talking about this, it's more than a game This is survival for anybody for the believer and Paul's describing a spiritual athlete if you will Who refuses to coast you refuse to quit or to simply settle for where you are in your walk with Jesus Christ? Because if I know this one thing about Christianity the Christianity is not a spectator Sport faith it is not that Because Jesus didn't call me and he didn't call us just to fill the stands. He called us to take the field Now I enjoy just like anybody else listening to a good preacher I love listen to a good podcast I love going to a good Christian concert. I love all those things, but we have to go beyond just sitting in the stands God get me in the game Because he wants me to take the field for I know this I know this the opposing team in any sport doesn't fear anybody out There in the stadium that's yelling They don't fear any of those people that are trying to berate them the end listen the opposition never fears the fans it fears the players on the field and Satan has no fear over some Christians who want to just give periodic attention to the things of God But never go deep into knowing and have an affection for God to follow him. He does not fear you one bit But you give me somebody here that says my pursuit in life is to know Jesus Christ And even through the suffering to follow him that I might be perfected into the image of Jesus Christ Satan trembles at you waking up in the morning. He trembles and shakes when you begin to praise him He trembles and shakes when you begin to pray and when you go to the word He knows that you are arming yourself to destroy every work of Satan. That's who he fears in this room Not somebody it just simply sits in the stands of Christianity, but gets on the field so the Holy Spirit reveals to Paul How to get your head in the game? How do I stay in this game some got out of the game?

Well Paul says there's there's some there are three simple things that I want to just direct your attention to and the Holy Spirit will Even give you more. He said here's something that you must do if you're gonna have your head in the game You got to release your past You got to let go he and how do you like what he said? He said this one thing forgetting the past So Paul says this one thing is I got to forget the past and that's what he mentions first How do you know it must be a big deal for all of us here? It's that the past is always a thing that seems to hinder us from the future of where God wants to take us Because Paul also called Saul you know that Paul also called Saul he knew he had a past and he even writes about it He said I was a he said I was a blasphemer of Jesus Christ He said I was the worst of sinners and yet here. He was a strict Pharisee a teacher of the law But this guy even went to the point of murdering in fact acts 9-1 even says what he did it says Saul Which is also Paul was uttering threats with every breath and was is eager, eager to kill the Lord's followers. In the name of God, he was killing Christians who were following the way of Jesus Christ. And he had quite a past, so he's saying this thing keeps coming up. And I guarantee it probably came up not just because of Satan, but because of other people. Even when Ananias was supposed to go pray for him, the first thing Ananias said, do you know who you're talking about here? Even some other people will bring it up for you. But thank God, God tackled Paul. I mean, knocked him off his horse and said, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? God struck him blind for three days. God speaks to another believer, Ananias,

who's afraid to go pray for him. Says, you go pray for that guy because that's who I'm changing. He is going to bring the gospel to all the Gentiles. That means you and me, that we can have the gospel. And God says, I'm gonna heal him of his blindness when you pray for him. I'm gonna fill him with the Holy Spirit. And the Bible says after Paul was prayed for by Ananias, he was baptized immediately in water and he started following Jesus Christ and was the greatest defender of the gospel of Jesus Christ. But even with that, how many people do you know probably sat there and tried to control Paul? They brought it up before and threw it up in his face and what he used to be. So just like Paul, your past must not hold you and it cannot control you. But how many know we're humans here and we have a real enemy called Satan? You know what's amazing about our minds? Your mind and my mind, we remember the things we should forget and we forget the things we should remember. I mean, it's amazing to me that your mind and my mind can be like Teflon. People say something good about us, it slides right off. Somebody give you a great word, have a great message day and it slides right off. But all somebody has to do is say something bad to you,

all Satan has to do is throw up one image of your teen years and it just sticks to you and it just wants to control your life and it will stick to you. Can I tell you something about what happens? This is why Paul was so overwhelmed by what Jesus Christ did on the cross because he knew his history and he said, he has wiped this away so I gotta press myself to stop letting the past control and manipulate where God wants me to be. That's why God says this in Hebrews 8, 12. I want you to look at this, I love this scripture. The writer of Hebrews chapter 8, verse 12 says, God is saying, and I will forgive their wickedness and I will, can you say the next two words? God says, I will forgive your wickedness and I will say it again, never again remember your sins. Remember your sins. Think about that. You say, what, does he get amnesia? No, God's not saying amnesia here, it's that he, I forgot, oh, oh, how could I have forgotten? That's not what this means. What this means here is that God says, I will no longer view you through your past sins and your failures. I refuse to view you through that anymore. You know, when I studied this word in the Greek, that word Greek remember also meant,

it also meant rememberment to take to court. He said, I will not take this evidence. It will never be admitted into the court. In fact, when you gave your life to Jesus Christ, it's like the information of the sins of your past has totally been deleted and it can never be presented before the judge to condemn you because it was wiped out. Jesus is saying, you will never have this ever come to you again because I don't see you. All I see is Jesus Christ and him crucified. That's what I see. Now, as Paul gets to know Jesus, this gets deeper in his spirit. The more I know him, the more I realize I've got to get past my past. And that's why he would write in 2 Corinthians 5, verse 21 to all those new Christians in Corinth, he would say these words. God made him who had no sin to be sin for Sam, to be sin for you. So that in him, Sam and you might become the righteousness of God himself, that you are in right standing with him. So the more you get into Jesus, the more you follow him, the more you get to know him, the more your affection gets for him, you start realizing exactly how he views you and it changes your identity of you. And it also gives you a whole lot of compassion for other people around you.

But some of us will never get there, you know why? It's the same reason why a runner never wins a race, always looking over his shoulder. shoulder the whole marathon. And I promise you, you can no more win the race than you could have driven to this church in reverse, looking out your rear view mirror to try to get here to the goal of coming to service today. How many of you thank God it's time to bury the past and possess the future that Jesus Christ has for you, never to bring the evidence to the court, but to set you free at liberty through Jesus Christ? He says, you've got to, he says, you've got to release that past, release it. Secondly, here's something interesting. He says, now you need to start recognizing your purpose. It's not just about being forgiven and knowing what he did for you, that the evidence is no longer held against you. He says, now you got to recognize why you exist. You've got to recognize your purpose. This is a big deal church right here. Big deal. Do you know why? Because your life changes, your life changes. And when it changes, some people forget their purpose in God. So if I could just say this for a moment, too much of purpose is put under the word of just success of what I've achieved. I'm going to go just, I'm going to show you what Paul's talking about here. What Paul is talking about here is you must define, you've got to know this, you've got to be able to say it. You've got to know this. You have to define your ultimate purpose for sucking in air and being on this earth. You've got to define it. And Paul sizes it up for us because so many people define success by what they do. You have to define success beyond what you do and what you produce. Just whatever it is, a student grades, a father providing. What is it? Raising children. It's got to go much further than that folks. It's got to be going further than my preaching. It's got to go further than producing, producing great messages and hearing from God. It's got to, it's got to blow past all of this. What is your ultimate purpose? Because our life, whether you like it or not, we measure our worth by our wins and our losses in this game. We do. There's an old preacher by the name of Billy Sunday. I love what he said. He said more men fail through lack of purpose than through lack of talent. Not knowing the ultimate purpose of why I exist. And Paul struggled with this. See the problem is success is often determined. It's defined in terms of what we do. It's on us all the time, folks. Come on. It's on us all the time. You're going to go

back Monday morning. You're going to face this. Most bosses, most coaches, most customers are interested in one thing, the results that you produce. I'm going to go a step further than that. There are even some relationships with loved ones that some of you have right now that are based on the results that they feel when you're around and what you do. Paul knew it. Paul knew it. And soon here's what happens. Our success is forgotten. Watch this as those who evaluate us. And as even you evaluate yourself, evaluate yourself, ask this question after you just did something great. The next question is, what's next? What's next? Well, okay. We'll take a vacation. We're going to take a break. We'll take a vacation. We'll spend some money. We'll go on a cruise. Okay. The cruise is done. What's next? What's next? Well, they liked how my outfit was and just how I so looked. Okay. So now we're going to add 20 years and 20 pounds. What's next? What's next? Yeah, but you know, man, you caught a good pass. You made the good drive, man. The team loves you. Yeah. But after that touchdown, then what's next? Are you seeing what I'm saying here? See, I there's some folks I'm no better than my last sermon. What's next? See so much of the success that you're driven by the kids all look good. Your kids look well-mannered. Well, then what's next? Your kid got a, Oh, you got the bumper sticker on her child. Great. What's next? Are you seeing how this stuff is never ever ending? It's what's next. Paul realized that success is forgotten by those who evaluate you and even yourself. And so what's left at your life, even as you age and you get older and you don't have the energy and are not, you're not able to what's next. Well, where are the people that are coming to visit me? What's next? Are you seeing this? It's always driving. So this is why Paul said in verse eight, he answers. What is the ultimate purpose for those who claim they're going to follow Jesus Christ? Here's what he said. Ready? Look at it, everyone. Join me on this. This is going to be good. Everything else is worthless when compared to the infinite value of knowing Christ my Lord. He said it is never ending and the what next because it never ever ends.

This new every morning, the revelation of who he is and who he says you are. Are you following this? He says, he says, when I do this, he says, for his sake, I have discarded everything else. It's not saying that they don't have a blessing in my life, but he says in light of Jesus Christ and his value and knowing him, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as what? Say the word with me garbage for what? So I could King Jesus Christ. That garbage is nice political, correct words. Some of you have the translation that puts it where it ought to be done. Okay. You're a little more sophisticated excrement. Okay. Over your head, poo that help you. He's saying when you size everything up, it's not saying that your family and your, what your sex successes are good. He says, if you're going to compare it to knowing Jesus Christ, I'm going to tell you, it's a heaping pile of excrement and dung. When you try to compare that, this is your ultimate purpose in life. Why the word dung? Why poo? Why would he put that there? Because it's something that has decomposed. The food gave you healthier body, gave you some strength. Those things are great values to your life, but when they all come through at the end of the day, it decomposes and he's saying, what's happening is, is the what next is what a lot of business people, a lot of young people, a lot of dating relationships is the what's next. What's next.

How can I keep her? What's next? What's next? What's next? What's next? And he's saying all of it will decompose and there's always going to be the what's next, but there's one thing that never comes to an end that will show you how to run life, show you how to handle the beauty, how to handle the money, how to handle the success in life and put it in its proper perspective. And that's when you pursue Jesus Christ, the one that gave it to you in the first place. How are we doing everybody? So that's why in verse nine, let's go down a little further. He says, and become one with him one. I know him. He knows me. Become one with him. I'm, I'm going to press deeper into him. So I no longer count my own righteousness. That means my own self-worth. So see, so some of those things that we go after and we make it our ultimate God, those give you your sense of identity and self-worth, a sense of provision. I, okay, I got it. I got the money. I got my retirement. I got it all together. He said, it all decomposes. It all goes. He says, look what he said. My, his self-righteous was trying to keep the law be perfect. He says, no longer count on my own self-righteousness through obeying the law, rather I become righteous.

I become positioned the righteous through faith in Christ for God's way of making us right with himself depends on faith. So then he drops the bomb. Here's your highest purpose. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. You want it real simple and plain. You want to know the ultimate purpose beyond all the successes that you have in this earth that are going to fade and go away. Here it is. The ultimate purpose is to know Christ and simply do what he tells you you should be doing in life period. That is success. And you know, when I find that I'm not comparing myself to other preachers, I don't sit there and analyze my preaching. Other people's preaching. I don't, I don't analyze this church of successes to somebody else's church successes. We need to be doing this. And I love good ideas, but I've just come to the place. The ultimate thing we've got to do as a church is we got to press so deep into him that you are not letting the world tell you what you should and should not be. Only Jesus in his word tells you who you are, your identity, and you simply do what he has told you to do. He gives you the gifts he has given you to show his glory. That is the ultimate purpose is to know him, is to know him and the mighty power that raised him from the dead. Ultimate purpose. Real simple. How many? Thank God the word is simple. Amen.

And here's the last one, everybody. after the prize, just run after the prize. I like what he said. I don't mean to say that I've already achieved these things or that I've already reached perfection because he knew it, boy. Sometimes we just drop the ball, but I do this. I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. You know what that's saying to me? Sam, he's the Holy Spirit saying to me and you, I want it for you worse than you want it for you. I saw something in you you didn't even see in yourself. He says, now I'm possessing that because he first wanted me to achieve it. He's been looking out for me this whole time. And so Paul says, here's what I keep doing. I stay in the game and I keep pressing to know him. What do you want from me, God? What is it you want? I want to follow you. I keep pressing. Here's what Paul said. He said, I haven't achieved it. You know what I love about this believer? Paul was mature enough, a whole lot more mature than you or anybody in this room or me. Paul was mature enough to know he was not mature enough. I'm going to say it again. This Jesus follower was mature enough to know I'm not mature enough. There are some folks that will never take a note because you think you know it all. I've got enough of this. I don't need that. I don't want to hear it.

I don't want to listen. He's mature enough to say, I got to keep pushing. I got to keep pressing. I got to keep stretching. You know what happens to people that stop doing that? They become what I call high-maintenance, low-impact Christians. It takes more and more to keep them engaged in the things of God, even the house of God, and they do less and less for the kingdom of God. But you give me somebody that starts knowing him, I will tell you what happens. They are high-impact, low-maintenance Christians is what they become because Jesus is their source and not us. Truth. He said, so I press on. I'm mature enough to know that I should be in the word. I'm mature enough to pray because I need to have a conversation with him. I'm mature enough to know I'm not mature enough and I still got to keep growing up and I'm the apostle Paul and I went into the third heaven and saw revelations I can't even tell you people about. I got to have him. It's like that athlete that presses on. He just, I mean, it's like that athlete who just strains every muscle in their body to reach that goal. Yeah, that's right. That's St. Brown whooping up on the Cowboys. Sorry, there's, I do have that series, don't forget, stretching out, but that's what he's talking about. Now it's easy to say, well, sure, you don't have any problems, pastor. It's easy to say, yeah, well, if they knew my situation, yeah, it's easy to press on when everything's going good. Yeah, I get it.

I think I might know it more than you think. And I think there's some believers that know it more than I think. They keep pressing. So all you have to do is look at Paul. As we bring this in for a landing, you have to understand where the guy is writing from. He's writing these words because he's incarcerated in prison for standing up for the gospel of Jesus Christ. These prisons, listen, there was no workout time. This is, there's no workout time. There's no courtyard time. There's nothing. No, no, no. There's no visitation times. These were the worst of conditions and he's in prison. And what does he do? What he's saying, he says, my life does not end with a brick wall in front of me. The brick wall is there, but my ultimate purpose is not done. And he not only wrote the book of Philippians, he wrote Colossians. He wrote Philemon's. He wrote Ephesians, all in prison. He told Timothy, I'm in prison, but bring me my parchment. Bring me my, bring me my cloak. Bring me my parchment. What is he saying? I'm going to take care of my body and I'm going to keep on pressing. I'm going to keep taking care of my body and I'm going to keep writing. I may not be able to preach, but I'm going to keep doing the ultimate purpose. Jesus, where I am in this suffering, tell me, what do you want from me right now? I want to know you. Show me what you want from me.

So many people get to retirement, boom, done. Get this one, boom, done. Christians, boom, done. Or something hits you, a loss, a death, and they think that's the brick wall. It's all over. Paul says, my life is not over because of a brick wall or because of somebody's offense against me or because of the pain I'm going through. Jesus, I know you. You know me. Show me what you want from me now.
