I wonder if there's been anybody who's experienced healing who says, send me Jesus. I want my neighbors to know about life in Christ. I want my neighbors to know. I want my family to know that sins, the forgiveness of sins is possible through Jesus, that shame can be lifted. I wonder if anybody's here just not to do church, but you wanna walk out those doors and you wanna help people experience the love of the living God. We got anybody like that in the house today church? We got anybody in the house that wants to witness the goodness and the grandeur of God? of the Lord Jesus. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Go ahead and grab a seat. Well, it is good to see everybody today.

My name is Brian. And after eight weeks of sabbatical, can I say it is good to be back at home with my church family. And I wanna start out the day by just welcoming some very important people. Everybody at our Grand Rapids campus, good morning. We welcome you. We love you. Everybody that's joining us online in Getty Espanol, we bless you. Everybody who's joining us from jails and prisons around the country, we want you to know we love you very much. We're praying for you today that you would experience a touch from God, even through this message. And it is so good to be here. We've, as I said, we were, my wife and I, Christine and I were gone for eight weeks just for a time of refreshment, of visiting different churches and talking with different pastors and also just having some fun for the last eight weeks. And it was incredibly, incredibly re-energizing, but I need to say thank you to some folks. I need to say thank you to our elders who made this possible, our elder team that oversees our church. I need to say thank you to an incredible staff.

And what a pastor's dream is is you're gone for eight weeks and people can say, it didn't even feel like you were gone. It just kept like the kingdom of God just kept advancing. And that's exactly what I heard. I wonder if you could make some noise right now for our elder board or for our staff team. I'm so grateful for you. And mostly what I feel coming back after eight weeks is I'm just super thankful for the work that God is doing in our church family. It's funny, first service, I could barely get through this part without just crying, honestly. It was, I sounded, I was like voice all cracking and everything. And the reason why is because we visited all these different churches and it was really great. It's such a privilege. But friends, sometimes, you know that old phrase, distance makes the heart grow fonder. Sometimes you get a little distance and you realize the thing you, just how good the thing is that you've got. And man, I just, I would visit these different churches and we'd be so encouraged,

but we'd also be like, man, I can't wait to get home to our Getty church family. And I don't know about you, man. I just feel grateful to God for the work that God is doing in this place and among this people. Are you grateful for your church in Getty? Are you grateful for having a place that's vibrant with the Holy Spirit, man? Man, I just couldn't wait to get back. And so we were traveling all over and it's funny because people would be asking like, hey, so what'd you guys do on your sabbatical? Hey, what'd God show you? Hey, what happened? And I had this idea a little bit ago. I was like, I got an idea. Rather than having 2,000 separate conversations, what if we just have one conversation on a Sunday and like work it all through, right? And so would you guys be up if I just shared with you some God highlights of the last eight weeks? Would you guys be game for that on a Sunday? Could I do that? And I just want, I'm gonna take you on a journey today. I asked if X would say, how many are grateful that Xavier's up here with us today? Thank you, brother. Thanks for being with us. He's gonna hang out with me up here today.

And I'm just gonna share some different ways that Christina and I encountered God over these last weeks. And I'm gonna share some scripture. And here's what I believe. Testimony is very important and very powerful in the church. How many of you know testimony is important, right? Testimony is important. And not just testimony of how you came to know Jesus. That's huge. But testimony of just what God's doing in your life today, where you see God at work. And so today I'm here to give testimony, all right? And I believe that you're gonna be encouraged and at times maybe even some challenged moments, challenging moments as I share how God's been speaking to Christina and me over these last weeks. So let's pray together. Let's ask the Holy Spirit to speak to each one of us. Father, thank you for being in this place already. Thank you for this amazing church called En Gedi. Thank you for the people and the sound of my voice in Holland, in Grand Rapids, in jails, in prisons, at En Gedi Espanol, all over West Michigan and all over the world joining us online. I say, thank you, Father. Thank you for those who are distant from you right now. Thank you for those who are questioning if you're really out there. Thank you that you brought them to church today because even in the act of coming to church,

you have a word to speak to them. You're drawing them close, speaking a word of love over their lives even today. And now Father, I pray that the Holy Spirit would speak to each one of us. We each come in with our own needs, our own hopes and our own hurts. But what we most need is a word from you. And so we are. We're not here to play church. We're not here to just go through some motions. We're here because we desire to have an encounter with you, the living God, through the Lord Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. We ask it in faith, in Jesus' strong name, and all God's people said. Amen. Well, what I wanna do over these next few moments is take you on a little bit of a journey of what Christina and I have been doing and where we have been going and what we have been seeing over the last few weeks. And in quick summary, our initial, you know, we finished eight weeks ago here at En Gedi and then we right away, almost practically next day, we got on a plane to London. While we were in London, we visited four different churches, had meetings with their pastors and their leadership

to hear what God was doing in that area. We were in Italy next, made a connection with a great pastor in Florence, Italy, who's leading an incredible ministry there. Then we came back home and were able to visit the great metropolis of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Come on, somebody, our hometown. And we were able to visit a church there we'd never been to and watch this, a church just popping off with God is doing a great work in this church. That was amazing. Few weeks break to be here in West Michigan. Then we got on a plane, we flew to Texas and hung out with a number of pastors in Texas and then flew to Orange County, California after that, where we visited three more churches and talked with pastors from those churches. I totaled it all up and over our eight weeks, we were traveling over, we traveled over 15,000 miles. So we got some stuff done over sabbatical, all right? And one of the things that was incredibly encouraging to us is that no matter where we went, we saw evidence of how God was working in that place. And I'll just highlight a couple of stories for you today. I wish I had time for all of them and I simply don't,

but we were in Orange County and it was so cool. We're meeting with this church that is experiencing a great work of God. And they were telling me a little bit of their story. And they said that during COVID, you know, tough season, and man, California is like tougher than everybody. I mean, he thought I was bad in Michigan, man. Don't go to California, all right? The other West Coast, man, it was rough. And those churches struggled to get open. These guys opened as soon as they possibly could. When they opened after COVID, they had 1,500 people, 1,500 people gathering for worship. Here we are a few years later now, and that same church has more than 13,000 people gathering to worship and seek Jesus every Sunday. God is moving in Orange County, California. And then not only did we see God's work in a very cool way in Orange County, there we were at Sandals Church, but then we were in London and this was so cool, man. London is a tough place. It's been fully secularized. There should be a by the way, a warning to us. These are our spiritual forebearers who brought the gospel to the U.S. And now London is so secularized. Very few people knowing Jesus and actually an open hostility towards Christian faith. In London, if you have more than 1,000 people gathered,

1,000 Christians gathered, that'd be like 10,000 in the U.S. And so we're meeting with some churches and one pastor said that actually inspired by the Asbury awakening that happened a few years ago here in the U.S., he got together with a couple of other pastors. And they said, what if we just get together and we invite our churches to pray and seek the heart of God for London? Seek that God would draw people to himself, that they would experience his love and put their trust in him. And so these three pastors said, yeah, let's do that. Let's pray. And they communicated to their churches. Honestly, they're not sure what will happen, but I wanna show you this video because this is what happened. They put the word out and on that very first prayer gathering, watch this, 1,500 people show up to pray and seek the face of God for London, England, just crying out to heaven. And I love this. They were lined up for blocks to get in and then masses just coming in to worship and seek God. How many of you know God is at work in London church? He is drawing people to himself. He is drawing the next generation to himself. And since that very first prayer gathering,

now those three churches have had six more prayer gatherings and every single time, there is a line for blocks before they open the doors and it is standing room. only as people cry out to God that He would speak to His people. I want to give witness today, church, that no matter where we traveled, over and over we saw this clear declaration that God was drawing people to Himself. And I couldn't help but think of both the beginning and the end of the Bible. I thought about Genesis chapter 12, looking out at what God was doing among the nations where God says to Israel as He starts the first spiritual family, God says to Abraham, I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you. I will make your name great and you will be a blessing. This was God creating the very first spiritual family, the very first people who would follow Him. And that's what He's continuing to do, drawing people to Himself from the nations. I thought of Revelation chapter 7, looking forward to eternity where we get this vision of heaven, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, and they cried out in a loud voice, salvation. Could you cry in a loud voice, salvation? Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb. Can I tell you, church, today the same God in Genesis 12 who is fighting and creating a people for Himself, who is loving people into relationship, is doing that today. He's doing that in the U.S., He's doing it in Texas, He's doing it in California, He's doing it in England, He's doing it in Italy, and He's doing it right here in Michigan, creating a people for Himself who will worship His name. And these people have one singular mark, and it is named in verse 10, salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb who is Jesus. The mark of God's people is we are a people who call out and name that our salvation is in Christ. We don't think that we deserve a spot in the church or a spot in heaven just because we are nice people, just because we try to have more good deeds than we do bad deeds. Friends, you realize

God could never let you in your current state enter heaven, because your sin alone would mess it all up, and so would mine. But God is so passionate for every person in the sound of my voice, that He sends His Son Jesus Christ to the cross, that you could be clothed in Jesus' righteousness, that you could put your trust in Him, have your sins forgiven, watch this, and be able to have confidence as you head towards heaven, not that you are qualified for heaven, but that Jesus qualified you through His perfection, beauty, grace, and death on the cross. God is still working all over the world calling people to Himself, and if you're here today and you have not yet put your trust in Jesus, God brought you to church to take that step. All of heaven is calling out to you, saying this is the day. Give your life to Jesus, ask Him to forgive your sins, and begin a relationship with God today. That's why He brought you here. Amen, church? And so we saw God work all over the world, so encouraging to see God continue with this drumbeat of reaching people, loving people, reaching people, and building His family. But even as I was reflecting on what God is doing around the world, I had one other passage come to my heart during that time, and it's a very famous statement of Jesus, although sometimes we pay attention to the beginning of it and we forget the end. Matthew chapter 16, Jesus says this to His disciples, Jesus says it to us. He said, on this rock I will build my church. He said the gates of Hades, the gates of hell, will not overcome it. How many of you know the devil and evil are not going to overcome what God is doing in the church, right? He says that the gates of Hades will not overcome, but watch this, next verse 19. I will give you, somebody look at your neighbor and say, you. I will give you, He says, the keys of the kingdom, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. I want you to hear what Jesus is saying. He's saying not only is God building His family, not only is God building His church, but how many of you know today, God is using you and me in His mission to build His people? Do you see that? in Getty. This is not just something God is doing out there

independently apart from us, but rather he looks at us and Jesus said, I'm gonna build my church and now I'm enlisting you to be part of something that will matter for eternity. And that is his people. And I sat there and as I'm traveling around seeing God's work, it made me so grateful for all of you who take this verse seriously and you are part of building into the local church that Jesus is so passionate about. So many of you saying, I wanna serve in kids, I wanna build up our teens, I wanna volunteer there, I wanna be part of our region ministry, I wanna serve in our local ministries, I wanna go out to the globe and I wanna aid what we're doing to see Jesus go to the nations. I wanna serve on Sunday, I wanna serve in guest experience, I wanna be in the band, I wanna lead a small group, I wanna disciple others. I thought of all these people and I was just so grateful because can I just declare over you, if you are giving and if you are serving God's church friends, you are part of something eternal and it matters to God and your life matters for its significance and for legacy because you are part of building what God is building. Do you believe that church? Can we make some noise for all those who invest in what God is doing? We got all kinds of hobbies, all kinds of stuff

we're interested in, but I want my life to count for the thing God is working on, amen? And man, as we head into this fall, I just wanna say, if you're here and you're not yet active, you're not serving, you're not yet giving, man, this is your time, take that step, all right? Be part, go to our website, we got a whole page on serving and figure out, maybe you wanna start on guest experience, that's a great place to start, welcoming people, letting them feel like that, hey, we're glad you're here today, but just do something so that you're part of what God is doing, you're not just doing your own project, building your own little kingdom there, your little kingdom is gonna go away when you die, I wanna be part of what's eternal, amen? And so we're so grateful to see all the stuff God is doing all around the world, it was amazing. Now, there was another part of our trip that was really interesting, we had all these conversations with people and it was like, man, I was shocked by how, honestly, just how real people got that we made it to a different place, so we're on this plane to London, it's a long flight, and I will use just about anything to try to start a conversation with somebody, I am that guy next to you on the plane, I'm sorry. And so there's this dude next to us and we know we got a long flight,

and on a short flight, sure, we can all just pretend like the other person doesn't exist, that's fine, but when you're doing whatever it is, six plus hours, I'm like, we're gonna have to break the wall here and just talk to this person. And so I opened with a great opener, I said to the dude, nice watch, all right, that's how I start, it's brilliant, I know. And that opened up an incredible conversation, it lasted for several hours. As this guy started talking about that he majored in finance in college, he went to work on Wall Street, he was getting all kinds of successful on Wall Street with managing funds and all this business, partying like crazy, and then he came to a place where he said, he just realized, man, this doesn't feel like it's the life, my best life, just like partying and making money. And so he said, now he's trying to refigure out life, and he got married, and he's trying to invest his life in things that are different than where he was, and he and his wife are dealing with infertility, and he doesn't know what's gonna happen with that, and he's just laying all this out, he's talking about the problems that he grew up with, a really tough situation with his dad, it was brokenness. And then there was another person we met, and I like this guy a lot, we were doing a wine tasting thing,

and this dude had dreadlocks, and I was like, again, I'm a fan of dreadlocks, but I saw his dreads, and I was like, man, those are some nice dreads, that's how I started it, all right? So it's like the nice watch, but nice dreads, okay, see? So I did that, and he's like, oh, thanks, I said, so when did you, I mean, because they were long, and they were impressive, and I was like, so when do you start growing dreads like that? And he's like, well, I used to tour, I was part of Lenny Kravitz's band, all right? Anybody know Lenny Kravitz, like global rock star? Okay, all the old people, good job, all right, awesome. Some of you might know his daughter, Zoe Kravitz, who's been in X-Men and Spider-Man and stuff like that, but anyway, he used to travel with Lenny, and he's like, for many years, he's in a band right now in L.A., and he's like, for so many years, like, man, it was just like the rock star lifestyle, it was amazing, people are just like throwing themselves at us, and partying, and money, and all the things, traveling to great, exotic locations, and he said, you know, one day, I woke up, and I was just like, man, this is like not filling up my heart right now, this is not doing it. And so he said, I'm trying to figure out, watch this,

I'm trying to figure out how I can live a better life. And he said, I've been sober from alcohol. all for two years, now I'm just vaping weed. I was like, good job? Uh. And we got off the bus, he's like, you want some? I was like, I'm good, thanks bro, thanks, I'm good, I'm good. Appreciate the charity and the generosity though, but I'm good. But here's this guy again, just trying to figure it out. And then there was these two couples that I met that were at this wine tasting thing. One was just newly married and one had been, they were engaged to be married. And so we're making a small talk with them and just hearing their story and stuff like that. I didn't compliment them on the hair of their watch this time, we got just talking about wedding stuff and we started asking their story and there was a theme between the two of them. It was very clear, they're asking us like how we do our marriage, they're asking us how we've approached relationship with our in-laws, because that's always easy. And they asked us about raising kids and things. And what was very clear from their questioning is number one, neither of these couples had anything close to a relationship with God. And number two, they were absolutely clueless as to what it meant to live out

a life-giving godly marriage. And so I'm having all these conversations and there are more than just those three. But we get back home and I wanna take some time where I just like sat and said, Lord, what do you wanna say to me through this experience of talking to these, well, really the whole traveling thing. And man, my heart just started breaking for these couples who didn't know Jesus. And I started thinking about two verses in particular. Romans chapter six, verse 21. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death. For the wages of sin is what church? It's death. Some of you have been there, you know that. I thought of that verse from Galatians chapter six and verse eight. Whoever sows to please their flesh from their flesh will reap destruction. And man, I just was at my table and I'm just like weeping, thinking about the brokenness that I just witnessed. We traveled all over Europe and besides the meetings that we set up with pastors, to our knowledge, we did not have a conversation with one single Bible-believing Christ follower. And it just broke my heart at the spiritual death

and lostness and destruction that I heard in all of these stories. But the thing that encouraged me was despite all of this spiritual lostness, each one of the folks we talked to had such openness to the gospel, such openness to spiritual conversations. Not only did they like tell about their own journey and their own hurts, but there was my buddy with the dreadlocks. So we're on this, we got this drive home and he'd been talking about music. Now, if somebody is talking about music, what do you think I'm gonna bring up church? In getting music, right? Come on, that's a no-brainer. And so he's like, oh yeah, I'm in this band and we're in LA, blah, blah, blah. And I was like, oh, man, that's cool. And so at one point I was like, yo, are you guys on Spotify? And he's like, yeah. And I said, I mean, I'd love to take a listen. And then he asked the question I was hoping he'd ask, you guys on Spotify? I said, oh yeah, we on Spotify, all right? And so he said, I'm gonna take a listen to you guys. And it was a really, really good conversation. It was so good. So we both put our headphones in on this bus,

long bus ride back. And I see him going out and then like, I'm listening to his music, you know. Well, I'll just skip his music for now. And he tasked me on the shoulder though. And as we had our ears in for a bit and he tasked me on the shoulder, he's like, he's listening to war. I said, by the way, I don't wanna put him onto too much. I just said, here's one track, all right, at the beginning, one track. I always wanna manage that supply and demand. I don't know how much demand there is, so I'm just gonna give a little, right? And we'll see what happens. He listens towards timeout, bro, this is fire. I was like, your music's really good too. And so he puts his ears back in and I listened some more too and his music keeps getting, it did get better and better. And so I'm like, oh man, I love what you're doing on this track and this track and all that. And he's like, oh man, he continues to listen to songs that we've done. And he's like, bro, this song, Emptied, is wrecking me. And then this is the best part though. I thought, like, I listened to a bit of his music, but I wanna talk to my wife, all right? So I'm like, okay, ears out. I got enough of the LA band.

And my man leaves his ears in the whole time. He's got his headphones on the whole time. And the whole time he listened, it got even better. music all the way home in the 45 minute to an hour bus ride. He didn't stop listening. We get off the bus, he looks me in the eye, and he said, Brian, he said, this is the music that the world needs. And then he paused and he said, this is the music that I need. How many of you know, friends, that's the hunger our world has. And if you know Christ, you know that what he's really crying out for is not just a good song, he's crying out for a good savior. That's what he needs. That's what he's longing for. And that's what I'm praying for for him. Talk to that young married couple, they're engaged. And we're processing their background. And just, you know, at a certain point, I said, oh, so tell me, you know, you guys got like a church background. We're talking about weddings, where they're gonna get married, you know. And so I'd say, you guys got much of a church background. Can I just tell you, if you're gonna have conversations,

you gotta ask questions and take a risk sometimes, right, church? Right, you just gotta ask something, all right? So you got a church background. They said, oh, you know, the lady says, she's like, my husband doesn't. She's like, I grew up going to Catholic church, but man, my background was all like rules and don't do this and do do this. And that's really all it was. And I said, man, that breaks my heart to hear that because Christianity was never supposed to just be a religion. Christianity was supposed to be a relationship with God. And friends, I will never forget the look in her eyes when I said, it's supposed to be a relationship with God. Her eyes were filled with what I would say was a mixture of bewilderment and excitement. And she said this, you mean we can have a relationship with God? And I said, yes, you can have a personal relationship with God, that's what he made you for. And I said, get this, it's not tied to how good or bad you are, it's tied to how great Jesus is. It's not about what you do, it's about what he's done on the cross for you. All you need to do is put your trust in Jesus Christ and he forgives your sins and he makes a path for you to enter his family.

I was about to step on the table right then and just start preaching to the entire Wine Tasting Tour. The bosses will wait, everybody. That's an old Billy Graham reference, but I was ready to just get after it. Although the bus in that case did not wait because our tour guide go, all right, everybody, load up, it's time to go to the next place. And that was the end of my sermon. But I'm trusting that was a seed planted in Jesus' name. I'm trusting that was a seed planted and I'm praying for that couple. Would they come to know the Lord? Would they come to know Jesus? Would they be able to build their lives on the gospel? So I was so encouraged by the spiritual openness I saw, but friends, I came home and I have to tell you, I was convicted. So I'm sitting there praying about these lives that I just encountered and the brokenness and the destruction in their stories and their hunger for something more. And the Holy Spirit said, Brian, you have been more intentional about having conversations with people overseas than you have been about having conversations with lost people in West Michigan. And I don't know if that's because sometimes I feel apathetic or I'm too busy

or I'm distracted or what. But the Lord reminded me of something, that the same gospel that has changed my life, the same gospel that I was sharing with each one of these people as I had opportunity overseas is the same gospel that has the potential to change every life here in West Michigan. I wonder if there's anyone else in the room who says, God, would you use me in my city? God, would you use me? I'm sorry for having a blind eye towards people who are far from you. And when I go into school and when I go into work and when I walk in my neighborhood, God, would you use me to give witness to Jesus? Would you help me help people discover life and freedom in Christ? Would I have the boldness to start spiritual conversations? Would I have the boldness to invite the neighbor who's different than me to come over for a cookout? Would I have the boldness to invite my person who works next to me to church, not even knowing what the sermon's gonna be about, but believing that if the Holy Spirit is present in God's people and I invite that person from work into the church, they're gonna experience the power of God. Would you use me? Would you use us, God?

How many of you know, friends, there is great brokenness all around, but we have the power of the gospel to heal brokenness and to forgive sins in Jesus Christ. That's what he's given us. Oh, help us, Lord. Help us to share it. There were moments that were exciting in this trip. There were moments that were... fun, there were moments that were just enlightening and educational. And there was one moment, I would say, in the time we traveled, particularly in Europe, that was just what I would describe as honestly sobering. No other word for it but sobering. We just walked through the Colosseum in Rome. Incredible architectural marvel, incredible accomplishment for its time. But after we toured the Roman Colosseum, we proceeded to walk just next door to a far lesser-traveled attraction, and that is called the Mamertine Prison. And I've got a picture here for you of the Mamertine Prison, but this was the detention and execution site for some of Rome's most important state prisoners. And we believe, we're not 100% confident, but we believe that most likely the Apostle Peter and the Apostle Paul were held in this very prison before they were executed. When you walk into that prison, it's just as you see in the picture. It's dark, it's dank, it's dirty, and yet we walked into this underground room. There'd be a hole in the floor above it where they would just drop the prisoners through, like an open manhole cover, they'd just drop them in there. And we're standing in there, and for every person that would walk in this very small space, it was just quiet. And without anybody giving instructions or prompting you to be quiet, there was just a sense of reverence and regard for the price that had been paid for faithfulness to Jesus in this place.

The Apostle Paul and the Apostle Peter giving their lives to see the gospel go forward, to talk about Jesus. And I'll tell you, after standing in those hallowed grounds of the Mamertine Prison, I started reading 2 Timothy, which is a letter we believe was written from that place, differently. With your mind engaged and thinking about that picture of the prison and thinking about Paul sitting in that prison, writing this letter, listen to what he says in 2 Timothy chapter 2. This is my gospel for which I am suffering, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. 2 Timothy chapter 1, join me, Paul says to Timothy and the readers of this letter, join me in suffering for the gospel. How many of you would like to have your pastor give you that invitation? And then 2 Timothy chapter 3, maybe the most challenging words I read after visiting that prison, everyone, somebody say everyone, how many of you know everyone includes all of us, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. It's important if you name the name of Christ today that you understand that to name the name of Jesus and to follow Him means you have to be ready to carry a cross. You have to be willing to sacrifice. Many times that sacrifice that God is calling us all to is a sacrifice of time. What does it mean to serve and love people? What does it mean to invest in God's project and His prize, which is the church? Many times that sacrifice is a financial one. What does it mean for us to give generously such that we might fuel what God is doing? It's part of the sacrifice that we carry as Christ followers. Many times the sacrifice will be one of our own comfort zone. We say, God, I just like hanging out and talking with people who are just like me, who have the same background and like all that. And God says, no, I want you to walk across the room and talk to somebody who's unlike you. I want you to invite your neighbor over for cookout.

I want you to go on a global mission trip even though you're like, I don't even have a passport. I don't, I'm not sure I even like people, let alone get on a plane and, you know, meet people who are from a whole different language group. For some of us, it will be a cross of sacrificing the opinion of others that they have of us, where we're willing to talk about our faith and invite people to church at work or at school, and they're going to look at you funny, and they might judge you, and you might even miss opportunities. But can I tell you, friends, it's part of the sacrifice that comes with knowing and following Jesus. There is no such thing as a Christian. Cost-free, risk-free Christianity. If your Christianity is cost-free and risk-free, it is not Christianity. It is the American dream sprinkled with a little Jesus on top. That is not real. There is no such thing as a cost-free, risk-free Christianity. And yet, and yet, listen to these words that Paul would write at the end of that letter from prison. Verse six, he says, "'I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near.'" He knows he's about to go to heaven. He said, "'I fought the good fight. I finished the race. I've kept the faith.

And now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, which the righteous judge will award to me on that day.'" Sometimes you feel like you're crazy when you're sacrificing for Jesus in this world, because you see your neighbors traveling to that place, and you see your friend buying that thing, and you think, I could do that too if I wasn't giving my time to God, if I wasn't giving my resources to the kingdom, if I didn't lose that opportunity because I stood up for Jesus, friends, and I just need to declare to somebody today who sometimes you think you're crazy because you're taking risks for Christ, that someday you are gonna meet Jesus face to face, and when you meet Jesus face to face in heaven, there will not be one risk that you regret. Rather, you will be so thankful to God for every time you stepped up and stepped out and stepped into faith and gave yourself up and said, "'God, might I go lower that Jesus would be lifted up? "'I'm willing to sacrifice that Jesus would be lifted up.'" Man, you're gonna look at his eyes. You're gonna look at his eyes. The only regrets we're gonna have are the one times we held back from Jesus, friends. You realize that?

You'll be so glad for every sacrifice, for every cost, for every cross, that you have the store of the crown of righteousness in which the Lord, the righteous judge is going to award to you in that day. Do you believe it, church? Do you believe it? Well, there's one last thing I wanna share with you that really encouraged us. You good with, can I share one last thing? You good, everybody good? All right, one last thing. Our trip of Europe and the US, one last thing. So we're talking to this church in London, and this was cool. So this guy tells me that they're ending their service in a new way, and he said for about the last maybe year, they've been like, rather than having a normal, formal, big ending, he said, we're just like worshiping, and our prayer team comes up front, and we just spend some time praying. That's what we'll be doing, he said, most every Sunday. And he said, we have not seen, we've never seen so many people healed. He said, we have seen more people healed and delivered and restored, he said, in the last 12 months than we have the whole time we've been at church.

And I was like, man, that's amazing. That's so good to hear. And I said, tell me, this is like where the pastor practical part gets in. I'm like, so tell me, like, you got the prayer team coming down? Yeah. I said, how do you train those folks? Like, how do they steward that moment when they're praying for people? And he said, we do train them. But he said, lately, what we've been finding is the most powerful prayer they pray, it's very simple, they'll ask the person, how can I pray for you? Then they'll lay hands on the person who comes forward, and they'll simply say, come Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit. And he said, with those three simple words, we've just seen God's power descend in great ways, setting people free, ministering to hurts, giving people direction, come Holy Spirit. You realize the Holy Spirit's still working today, church? All they're doing is making space. I want, like, as a pastor, I want the six point, you know, 30 page booklet that's like, this is how we train them and make sure everybody gets experience with God, all that, it's like, come Holy Spirit. Listen, I know some of you are afraid to pray out loud,

some of you are afraid to pray with your family, some of you are afraid to pray, can I just tell you there's power in just the words, come Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit, offered in faith. And so we go from that context, God's doing these miracles in the context of this church in London, packed out with people. A few weeks later, we're at this place in California, it's called Pirate's Cove, all right? This is a picture of it, Pirate's Cove. Anybody ever heard of Pirate's Cove? Anybody know this? Yeah, I thought four people, all right, that's cool. Pirate's Cove, it's actually a famous beach in the Newport Beach area. And that spot in the 60s and 70s, where hundreds and even thousands of hippies were baptized after they came to know Christ, all right? So you got all these hippies and they think, like, just drugs. and doing sex and love however you want is gonna make them happy. And they're finally like, this ain't working. And they give their lives to Jesus, and they understand that the Bible says the order of it is you believe in Jesus, and then you are baptized, declaring your faith in Jesus. And so they believed in Jesus, and they're going to that beach, Pirate's Cove,

to declare their faith in Jesus. Now can I mention, church, we have a baptism as a church coming up August 30th at Lake Michigan. And can I just give some encouragement, if you haven't been baptized, but you are a follower of Jesus, you need to declare that you have been saved, that you have been redeemed. I wanna ask you to sign up, get online, sign up. We're gonna have a party out there on Lake Michigan and declare God is still working, all right? And we're gonna say, I've received Jesus, and now I'm gonna declare it through baptism. And so we're looking at this beach, and we're like, wow, man, it's so cool to think, and these grounds right here, thousands of hippies giving their lives to Jesus. There's a great movie about it. It's called Jesus Revolution. All right, check it out. But then I learned something when I was out there. And here's what I learned, that the work that the Spirit of God was doing back in the 60s and 70s actually hasn't stopped. Because even in recent years, thousands of people have been baptized at that same spot. In fact, in just a couple of days ago, they baptized, wait for it, 4,500 people in a single day. Can I declare to you,

the Spirit of God is still moving in Orange County. The Spirit of God is still moving in Newport Beach. The Spirit of God is still moving at Pirate's Cove. And I wanna just declare somebody today, man, the Spirit of God, the same Spirit of God we saw in London, the same Spirit of God that we saw working in Orange County, that same Spirit of God is working right here and right now. Some of us mistakenly think that the Holy Spirit is like LeBron James, still great, but best days are kind of behind you. Can I tell you, that's not the Holy Spirit. Oh, first century, he worked real powerfully, but now things like settle down a little bit. Friends, I got to tell you right now, the Holy Spirit's best days are not behind him. The Holy Spirit's days are right now because it's right now that God is advancing the kingdom. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is setting people free. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is healing. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is raising up a new generation who loves Jesus. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is reaching out to you in the 50s and 60s and reviving your faith and saying, build into the next generation. I'm not done yet. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is spurring revival. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is discipling Christians. It's right now that the Holy Spirit

is raising up missionaries to go to the ends of the earth. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is writing new songs, writing new songs that testify to Jesus. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is putting a good word on people's lips to prophesy what Jesus is doing in the world. It's right now that the Holy Spirit is coming alongside hardened hearts and he's waking them up saying, the way you are living is not working. Come home to Jesus. Come home to Jesus. The Holy Spirit's days are right now. His best moments are right now. This is the time. This is the time. John 14, Jesus says, very truly, I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I have been doing and they will do even greater things. Somebody shout greater things. Because I am going to the Father. And man, I just think we've gotta recapture our belief in, our hunger for, and our expectation of the Holy Spirit. Let's make time to listen to him. Rather than just go right to action, rather than just go right to action, somebody asks you to pray for them. Before you pray, you say, let me take a minute to just listen.

They might say, I want you to pray for my back. The Holy Spirit might say, pray for their relationship with their mother. Let's listen to the Holy Spirit. And then when he speaks, when he gives you a prompting, then you move on that prompting because when you are faithful to what the Holy Spirit's saying, that is precisely when you see God do greater things through your life. Amen, church? Amen. I wanna just end this time with a time of prayer. And we're gonna invite God to talk to us right now. With every head bow, we just wanna say, Holy Spirit, we're here to hear from you. You're present. Your best days are not behind. They are here right now. And Father, there is someone in the sound of my voice right now who has not yet come home to you. From the very beginning of time, you're reaching the person who is distant from you and you're reaching the person who is distant from you and you're saying, I love you and it's time to come home through Jesus. You're saying that to that somebody right now, this morning.

And so if you're here today and you wanna give your life to Christ, you wanna step into God's love and have a relationship with him by putting your trust in Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross for you. Amen. And I'm gonna count to three. Three in a moment, when I say three, I'm just gonna ask you to raise your hand up in the air if you wanna give your life to Christ. Not gonna call you out or embarrass you, but by raised hand, you are declaring before God that you wanna give your life to Jesus. And so one, I want you to know God loves you so much that he gave his son Jesus to die on a cross for your sins. Two, the same Jesus who would die on a cross was raised to life three days later in victory so that by trusting in him, you too could have victory. And three, if you wanna give your life to Jesus today, could you just put your hand in the air right now as a way of saying, yes, God, today is the day I wanna give my life to Christ. God bless you. Who else is in that place of saying, today's my day to come home. Today's my day that I need to give my life to Jesus. All the way in the back, good job, all the way. Who else is saying, today's the day I need to put, trust in Jesus that he would forgive my sins.

I see you, awesome, good job. Put your hands down. Father, thank you for each person who just took that step today. Would their sins be forgiven through the blood of Jesus? And would they be made new through Jesus' own resurrection that from this point forward, they would be your sons and your daughters. And now staying in this place of prayer, wanna give you just a few moments to listen. Friends, the Holy Spirit is still speaking. The problem is not, is he speaking? The problem is, are we listening? And so I'm just gonna give you a few minutes and I want you to pray this in your own heart before God. Holy Spirit, speak to me. Maybe he'll talk to you about your relationship with the church. Maybe he'll talk to you about carrying a cross. Maybe he'll talk to you about simply being willing to step up and share your faith with others around you. Could be something totally unrelated. Let's listen to him now. Holy Spirit, we're quieting ourselves. And would you speak? Thank you, Father, for each word that was spoken. Might each prompting received be met with faith and obedience so that your greater things would be accomplished.

We pray for Jesus' sake, amen. Would you stand to your feet? Prayer team, I wanna ask if you would come forward and just kind of be around the front here. And we're going to end today and spend some time just revering God and worshiping. But this is also gonna be a time where if you've got a need in your life that you'd like prayer for, I want you to come forward and I want you to exercise some faith. I want you to exercise some boldness. And whatever that need may be, just kind of make your way up here and ask a fellow member of the family of God to pray over you. And trust that this is how God works through the prayers of his people, the prayers of his saints. Let's worship, let's pray.
