Would you stand up with me? Would you look to the right and the left and just say, good morning. I'm glad you're here. I see all these beautiful faces in this congregation and we're just so thankful that we get to worship with you this morning. We're gonna do something a little bit different. We're actually gonna start out the morning slow, but there's an intention behind it. We really wanna create a space right now to behold the Lord, to praise the Lord. It's such a beautiful thing that we get to worship in this room. If you look around all of these amazing faces that we get to gather together and praise the Lord Almighty, but we are not the only ones praising in this room. We're actually joining heaven. We're joining the angels. We're actually joining thousands of churches across the country, across the nations, praising him. And I wanted to talk about the throne room because today we just wanna make this place a throne room for the Lord to inhabit. I wanted to read Revelation 4 and it completely ties with the song we're gonna sing together as we worship. It's Revelation 4, it talks, it's the throne of heaven. And would you guys just close your eyes as I read this?
We can picture it, the throne of heaven. It says, after this, I looked and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, come up here and I will show you what must take place after this. At once I was in the spirit and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of Jasper and Ruby, a rainbow that shone like an emerald and circled the throne. Surrounding the throne were 24 other thrones and seated on them were 24 elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightnings, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. Also in front of the throne, there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center around the throne were four living creatures and they were covered with eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion. The second was like an ox. The third had a face like a man and the fourth like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night, they never stopped saying,
holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come. Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and who lives forever and ever, the 24 elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say, you are worthy, our Lord and God to receive glory and honor and power for you created all things and by your will they were created and have their being. Church, can I ask you something? Can we create this room to be like the throne room of God worshiping the Lord? Let's do it. We're so thankful for you, Lord. Would you just lift your hands as a sign of surrender? We're so thankful, Lord. We wanna make this room your throne room, Lord. We acknowledge your spirit right now in this place. We don't have to warm up to your presence, Lord. Your presence is moving right here and right now, Lord. And we acknowledge it and we praise you in this moment. We're so thankful for you, Lord. And the devotional is gonna be such a great tool to just begin to prepare our hearts for what I really believe God has in store for us as a church family. And so it's gonna be, it's gonna be a great run of days. Now, today we're starting a new series and I'm hoping some of you at least are excited about it because today we are starting the series and it's called Tongues of Fire where
we are looking at the person and the work of the Holy Spirit. Do you have some anticipation today to talk about tongues? I'm sorry, in the back, cause y'all, my front row people are like, yeah, let's go. And I see all in the back row, like it's just you and me here. If you think, oh, the lights are bright, he can't tell. No, I see all of you, all right? All of you. I see all in the furthest back. And I'm wondering if even the back row kind of people have excitement to talk about the Holy Spirit for the next month. Is there anybody in the room that says, Holy Spirit, I want more of you? I like the hands up there. Let's go. All right. That's so good. So that's where we're headed over these next weeks. And I took it easy on you. Last week was my first week back from sabbatical and I'm going to be like, I'm going to ease it. I'm going to ease them in. All right. I'm going to just ease them in. This week, that is done. All right. We are going into deep into the pool. We're going to Acts chapter one. If you've got a Bible, turn to Acts chapter one, you say, oh, we're going to preach on Acts one today. Acts one and Acts two and Acts three and Acts four today, actually. So strap yourselves in.
All right. You picked a good day to be at church. And as you're turning to Acts one, I want to just remind you a little bit about the book of Acts. Acts was written by a medical doctor, Dr. Luke. And it's actually a second part of a two book series. And so the book of Luke or the gospel of Luke is the historical accounting of Jesus' life. That's part one. And then I'll call Luke part two or the book of Acts, Acts of the Apostles, is the historical record of the early church, mostly after Jesus went back to be with God the Father. So that is what we're reading today. We're reading the words of Dr. Luke, inspired by the Holy Spirit. The words we're going to start out with took place after Jesus died on the cross for sins. After Jesus was raised to life three days after His death in victory over sin, in victory over death, in victory over the devil for you and me. But these words take place just before Jesus would ascend to be with God the Father again. He is speaking to the church, He is speaking to us. Jesus says this on one occasion. While Jesus was eating with them, His disciples, He gave them this command. Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift. Everybody shout out wait for the gift. Anybody else hate waiting besides me? Y'all hate waiting. Man, I hate waiting, alright? But Jesus said wait. Wait for the gift my Father promised, which you've heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. You will receive, what are they going to receive church? Power. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.
And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth. So right now, Father, we just want to ask that you would speak to us through your word. Right now, we want to ask, Father, that you would encourage our hearts when we read about the person and the work of the Holy Spirit. I pray, Father, for the person who's here, and they're struggling right now, would you meet them as the place? Bring encouragement. I pray for the person who's not been in church in a long time, would they know just in their hearts you're talking? to them and you're saying good job for being here, you've got a word for them. I pray for the person who's distant from you today, maybe doesn't have a relationship with you, would today be the day they come home to you, you're reaching out to them even right now, that they would step into a relationship with you, would receive your love in Jesus Christ, would today be the day? And Father, all together we do pray that you would speak to us now, take each word I'm gonna offer, Holy Spirit, I know I can't do this without you, so please help me do it for you and with you. Pray it in Jesus' name and every one of God's people said, amen. In Acts chapter one, we are reading what is one of the most incredible promises in the entire scriptural canon. Jesus is here promising that the Holy Spirit
will be part of, will dwell on, will inhabit every Christ follower's life. Now, you need to know when it comes to the Holy Spirit, God has always, the Bible teaches, existed as three persons but as one God. God the Father, God the Son, who is? Jesus, right? And then God the Holy Spirit. And we see the Holy Spirit right at the beginning of the Bible. Like Genesis chapter one, God is creating earth and it says the Holy Spirit hovered over the waters. But then beyond that, we see the Holy Spirit showing up throughout the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, but most definitely limited to specific times, specific people, and specific purposes. And so I'll just give you a few examples. For example, we read in scripture that the Holy Spirit dwells or comes to rest on Joshua. It equips Joshua, he equips Joshua for specifically the purpose of leading God's people into the promised land. We see the Holy Spirit fall on the judge Asniel. Asniel was a normal guy one moment, then the Holy Spirit descends upon him and Asniel's able to defeat Aram. We see the Holy Spirit fall on the life of David, who would go on to be the king of Israel, the greatest king of Israel. He was a shepherd boy.
The Spirit of God descends on this shepherd boy, watch this, and he becomes the greatest king of the Jewish people the world has ever known. It's what the Spirit of God does. We see the Spirit of God descend on the prophet Joel, who was also a shepherd. The Spirit of God comes on the prophet Joel, chapter two, and gives Joel this word that someday, someday in the future of God's people, the same Spirit that has been coming on select people at select times for select purposes will come in the life of every one of God's people. Amen. And now, now church, we're in Acts chapter one, and now Jesus has just come off of a ministry, performing wonders, healing bodies, and teaching and preaching brilliantly. Throughout Jesus' entire ministry, he was at pains to let people know he wasn't doing this on his own. It pains to let people know that when he healed somebody, it was because the Holy Spirit was in his life. Jesus, you know, got baptized right at the beginning of his public ministry. When he was baptized, the text says the Holy Spirit descended on his life. Everything great you see Jesus doing was because the power of the Holy Spirit was present in his life. And then in Acts chapter one,
Jesus looks out at ordinary Christians like you and me, and he says the same Holy Spirit that just empowered my life is going to empower yours. This is the promise, church. This is the promise. It's a breathtaking promise. It would have taken the breath away of any Jewish believer at that time. I don't know if we always appreciate just how breathtaking it is. Let me put it into terms you might understand. How many of you are fans of the Marvel movie franchise? Anybody, hands up at all campuses. All right, hands up. Oh God, we have a few of us. Some people like so-so like that, I like that. All right, that's me, I'm like in the so-so camp. Don't judge me. But anyway, all kinds of great characters. Like some people absolutely love Spider-Man. There's some Spider-Man freaks out there. Anybody, Spider-Man freak? Make some noise if you're a Spider-Man fan. All right, yeah, solid, solid. Some people like Black Panther as their guy. Who's into Black Panther? Who's Black Panther? Make some noise for Black Panther. Come on, right? Black Panther is not doing well in here, man.
Iron Man, anybody Iron Man? All right, I know you like the fireballs out the hands thing, I guess, I don't know, I don't know. My family, our kids are, they're nerds about Marvel. Some of y'all are nerd category with this, all right? We had a half an hour discussion. Once the word metaverse is said out loud, I'm done, all right? I'm done. Once you say metaverse, like, I'm checking out. There's a new Marvel movie, what did I say wrong? Multiverse, there it is. So, I was done before I started. Multiverse. Everyone's like, unk up there, man. Unk, that's unk move, man. What's this new movie that's coming out? Doomsday. Doomsday. Doomsday. And you guys spent a half an hour nerding on us, telling us all the movies that we need to watch to be prepared for Doomsday. Doomsday, that's what I just said? Yeah. And they're like, you gotta watch the TV show Loki. I'm like, I'm low-key not watching that show. Oh! No, I'm kidding. A little bit of fun in church, all right? But I was thinking about, I was thinking about, like, why do people get so into these Marvel movies?
Like, what is it? Y'all, they keep making them and they keep making millions. What is wrong with us, all right? Why do we? And I think, I think one of the reasons why we're so into the Marvel franchise is because there's something really cool about seeing the world face problems and needs and watching these people who have been almost like supernaturally equipped, divinely enabled to make a difference in the world for all the best things. Can I suggest to you, church, that when Jesus was announcing that the Holy Spirit was gonna come into the life of every Christ follower, He was essentially saying that when the Holy Spirit comes, every Christian is going to be the spiritual equivalent of a Marvel character. That's what Jesus was announcing. That's the promise that He's putting in front of you. You're gonna be gifted and enabled in ways you never could do before. In fact, we got a workshop coming up on September 22nd at our Holland location here that is just about gifts and the equipping of the Holy Spirit. And so if you want to take this conversation further, put it down. September 26th, you can sign up online. It's gonna be a great experience. The promise of Acts chapter 1, Christians, is that the Holy Spirit's gonna dwell in our lives. But watch this. I want to move on beyond the promise. Acts chapter 2. When the day of Pentecost came, which was a Jewish holiday, they, the early church, were all together in one place. What were they doing in one place? We know from chapter 1, verse 14, they were praying. The early church gathered corporately to pray together. Verse 2.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each one of them. All of them. Somebody shout out all of them. Not the special Christians, all right? Not the ones who read their Bible every day that week. All right? Every one of them was filled with the Holy Spirit right then. And they began to speak in other tongues or languages as the Spirit enabled. Somebody shout out enabled. Enabled them. All right? Watch what's happening here. The Holy Spirit comes down and dwells on each Christ follower. And I don't want you to necessarily go crazy about tongues and languages. We'll talk about that another time. What I want you to see here is the moment the Spirit of God dwells on a Christian, he or she is able to do things that he or she could not do before. Do you see a church? This is the Holy Spirit in action. Watch this. The Holy Spirit gives you supernatural power to live out your God-given purpose. You have a calling on your life. God, you're not here by accident. He made you for a mission. But I need to let somebody know, and especially if you don't know Jesus yet, you cannot fulfill your calling, you cannot live out your mission if you do not have the supernatural empowering of the Holy Spirit.
You need him to do what he called you to do, church. That's what we get so excited about when it comes to the Holy Spirit. And watch this. It works out in like two chapters. You already see crazy happening through the power of the Holy Spirit. There's this great scene. Man, Peter and John, they're debating with some of the really smart religious leaders of the day. I mean, the people that went to Harvard and Yale and they got all the letters behind their name and all that stuff, right? So they're having this conversation with these guys. Earlier we find out, before that they started talking, it says Peter and John were filled with the Holy Spirit. Now watch what the reaction is to Peter and John's words. It says Acts 4, verse 13. When they, the religious leaders, these brilliant people, saw the courage of Peter and John. They realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men. I wonder if anybody feels unschooled and ordinary in the house. Man, I've been there many times, unordinary. And then watch this. They realized they were unschooled and ordinary men and they were astonished. Somebody shout out astonished. Astonished. They were astonished. And they took note that these men had been with Jesus. Yeah. But what we know from the text is, it wasn't even so much that they'd been with Jesus.
It was that verse eight, they'd been filled with the Holy Spirit. And now, because they're filled with the Holy Spirit, because they're working and living within the power of the Holy Spirit, now these people are encountering two unschooled, ordinary men and they're like, something crazy about them. Something different about them. And it was the power of God. Here is the thing. Everybody look up here right now, all right? I want you to just, man, lock in. Lock in online. Here's the thing I have been praying for you all week long, every day throughout the day. This is the thing I'm desperate for for our church. This is the thing that I pray if God would do any one thing out of today's message, this would be it. I've been praying that those of you who know Jesus Christ would truly long for more of the Holy Spirit. I've been praying that for you, that it wouldn't be just going through the motions of church that you would truly long to say, God, I want to experience everything you have for me. Too many of us are living copy and paste lives. I get up one day, I do the same stuff I did yesterday, and then the same stuff I'm gonna do tomorrow. Copy and paste, copy and paste, copy and paste. You're going through the motions.
You're missing your purpose. Your best goal is to have a good lifestyle, and I want to look over your life and declare God created you for a holy adventure with the Holy Spirit. Quit settling, quit settling, quit settling for copy and paste. God's got more for you. I'm praying, oh God, would you give him a hunger for the Holy Spirit? God, would you make us discontent with day after day copy and paste? God, would you give us a spirit of holy adventure? That's the one thing. I can do all the work preparing for a sermon, and I can do all the work praying for you, but I just wish I could reach into your heart and make you want God, want more of the Holy Spirit. I was listening to this podcast this week, and it was Forrest Frank hanging out with a pastor named J.P. Placluta. Anybody listen to Forrest Frank? You know who I'm talking about, Forrest Frank? Yeah, we got some fans. People like Spider-Man, so-so. Forrest, now come on, right? And so they're talking about life on the road, and if you don't know Forrest Frank, he's filling up right now, Christian dude. He's filling up stadiums, 20, 30,000 people, all right?
And so what they do, though, he's talking about is when they got time, they got a break from their shows while they're on the road. He and some of his buddies, they'll just go out and walk around the town, and they'll just pray like, Holy Spirit, would you give us an opportunity to encourage somebody today? Holy Spirit, where do you want us? Where do you want us to come alongside a need? And so one day recently, they're doing that. They're just going out, and they're like, they pray this, Holy Spirit, would you give us a holy adventure today? They see a couple ladies, Forrest sees a couple ladies that just look like they're down, just depressed, and something in his spirit, which is the Holy Spirit, is like, you need to do something to encourage them. And so Forrest goes to this florist that's nearby, and he buys a bouquet of flowers. How many of you know, the ladies like the flowers, right? Okay, come on, somebody. That's a good word to use, single dudes, by the way. Forrest, he goes out and buys the flowers. He goes up to these ladies, and he goes, listen, I want you to know, I am a happily married man, but I was walking by, and I saw you looking down, and I felt like God said I was supposed to encourage you, and so would you take these flowers? Here's what was cool. Forrest is filling up stadiums.
People are coming to Christ, all this stuff, and yet when Forrest and this pastor, JP, are talking about what it's like to ride on the tour bus at night, and what they talk about, he said they spend more time talking about those relational encounters where they are able to encourage people through the Holy Spirit than they do filling a whole stadium. He said, that's the. That's the best part of our day. It's just being able to, it's not planned. It's not something we had on our, we just prayed, Holy Spirit, show us where you wanna use us. And he showed us and we end up talking about how we were able to connect with individual people and encourage them towards Christ. So good, so good. I had a couple of carpet cleaners come over to our house this week, because Christina's really dirty. And so I was like, man, we gotta, kidding, kidding. And I didn't make that joke first service because I'm a wise man. I knew you'd hear it, so I kept it in the back pocket. But no, we had these carpet cleaners come over and they worked on our house. And I always am like, whenever people are coming over for working on a house, I'm always like, Holy Spirit, what do you have for this conversation? You know, what do you have?
And just kind of expect something in faith. And so they're over and I'm praying. And these are like, these are the least talkative carpet cleaners and maybe humans I've ever met in my life. I'm like every, you know, I talk last week out, try to get conversation started, nice watch, or I like your whatever. I'm getting nothing from these. One guy just grunts. I mean, that's all I got from him. I was like, no, no, no, no. You know, that was all I got. In fact, it was, he grunted so much, I had to actually, other guy to like translate the grunts for me to know what he's asking and what he's saying. So I'm trying and it's like, all right, Lord, you know, in my spirit, I'm like, all right, Lord, maybe there's just not gonna be anything happens today with these two. That's all right, that's all right. You know, some days it's like that. And so I keep praying though, they keep cleaning. And then they're wrapping up and they're putting all their stuff in their truck. And I just felt like the Lord hadn't released me to be like done with it. So I got to the driveway to pay. And I said, well, hey, before you guys leave,
I'm a pastor and I just like asking people how I can pray for them. Now listen, you can use that line, right? You don't say the pastor part. I know you're not all, but you can. Hey, I'm a Christian and I just like asking people how I can pray for them. It's not that hard. And all of a sudden, Mr. Gruff guy, you know, the guy that only grunts and mumbles, a hoodaboo, right, that guy? All of a sudden, he stops what he's doing, looks me dead in the eye. And he said, my mom had a heart attack yesterday and we don't know how to deal with it. We've never experienced anything like this in our family. And we just had a long talk right there about what their family was going through and ministering right on the driveway. The other guy said, how about you, man? How can I pray for you? And he's like, man, I'm about to, in two weeks, go back to school and I'm carrying some anxiety and some fear about this year of going to college. I said, all right. And we just spent some time and we had time right there on the driveway, just encouraging and like ministering to these guys' hearts. Now listen, friends, I had a good day that day, all right? I got up in the morning and I spent the first half
of my day just doing message prep, getting ready for today. In the afternoon, came in, met with Pastor Jerrion. It's all right. Third, kid, that was great, it was a great conference. But can I just tell you, between message prep, meet with Jerrion, any of, the favorite part of my day was getting to hang out with those brothers on my driveway, doing church right there, asking about their needs, talking about things that matter, being on an adventure with the Holy Spirit. And can I tell you, that's what God made you for, is ordinary, unschooled folk. The Holy Spirit fills us, and watch this, instead of settling for a life of copy and paste, instead of settling for, I'm going to earn enough paychecks so I can buy another thing, I get up in the morning and I say, Holy Spirit, what kind of adventure do you have for me? Holy Spirit, how do you want to help me live on? Holy Spirit, how can I live on my calling? So when you go to bed at night and when you're on your tour bus, you got something to talk about, about how God used your life to make a difference in this world. I wonder if anybody wants to be used like that by God through the power of the Holy Spirit, because that's the promise. That's what I'm putting in front of you, that's what I'm praying, God, make them hungry for the Holy Spirit, please, God.
Give us divine discontent that we live on mission. All right, let me get the practical part. You say, okay, how's it look, how's it work, how do I get filled? We got a promise of the Holy Spirit, we got the presence of the Holy Spirit, Acts chapter two, but now I want to talk about what's the process of actually being filled with the Holy Spirit. How's this all work out in practice? And so Acts chapter two, Peter preaches this sermon, he talks about Jesus, died on a cross, raised to life three days later. And it says in verse 37 that when the people heard this, they heard Peter's sermon, they're like cut to the heart, and they say to Peter and the other apostles, brothers, what shall we do? And Peter. replies this way, check it out. Repent and be baptized. Everybody say repent. Repent. And be baptized. And be baptized. Repent and be baptized. Every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins. And watch this. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. How do you receive the Holy Spirit in your life? One word, repent.
Say what's it mean to repent? It's real simple, everybody. Repent is where you turn from your sins and you turn towards Jesus. Repent is where you turn from trying to create your own happiness and you start looking to Jesus for your joy. Repent is where you quit trying to try to save yourself with a nice and or religious life and you say there ain't no saving myself. I'm gonna turn away from those efforts and turn towards Jesus who is the only one who can save. That's repent. No long list, no boxes you gotta check and forms you got. He just says repent, be baptized, and guess what? Filled with the Holy Spirit. That's it. And by the way, by the way, it's important we notice how tightly Peter connects baptism with making a decision for Jesus, with repenting. You know why he says repent and be baptized? Because that's what Jesus taught. You turn to Jesus and then you declare it out loud through baptism. It's like a wedding ring, declared out loud. You know, it's funny. I was thinking about that wedding ring image. I was trying to think about how many weddings I've been part of as a pastor. I've been a pastor for 26 years.
Come on, that's a long time, right? And I know I've been part of at least 100 weddings. I think maybe it may be more than 200 weddings over 26 years times. So I've seen a few weddings. I'm gonna tell you something, I have never once, now maybe some of y'all get married, you'll be the first one, but up till now, I'm gonna tell you something I have never seen in a wedding, and I've seen a lot of things. I've never had it where a husband and a wife or a bride and a groom are sitting up there and they're like, do their vows. Yeah, till death do us part, you know, fruit with you forever. Yeah, sickness and in health, you know, and whatever and whatever, poverty and riches, hopefully riches, because we don't love poverty, but you know, whatever, till death do us part. And then after the vows, I've never had it where when it comes to that ring exchange ceremony, the public indication that I've committed this person, I've never had a husband or wife go, yeah, you know what, with the whole ring game, I'm just gonna have to pray about that, all right? I mean, don't get me wrong, babe, I am committed to you for life, but this whole ring thing, that's a big deal. I'm not sure I'm ready for that. And yet, can I tell you what?
Christians do that all the time when it comes to baptism. Oh, I'll put my trust in you, Jesus. You're the Lord and Savior of my life, but now that you've called me to declare it out loud through baptism, I'm not so, I'm gonna need to pray about that. I'm gonna give you a little word, Christians, and this applies to baptism and a whole lot of other things as well. You don't need to pray about obedience. You just need to obey. Can I say it again for the hard of hearing in the room? You don't need, oh, Lord, I don't know, is this the year I'm called to be baptized? I hope the water's warm, I'm not sure. Are you moving in it this year? You don't need to pray about obedience to Jesus. You just need to obey Jesus, church. And if you haven't been baptized, get baptized in the name of Jesus. Sign up online and declare your faith. He puts the two together, repent and be baptized. Now, here's the mistake. Some of you are making it right now. There's a mistake. Some of the Christians are making this. You read those words, Christians, and it says repent and be baptized, and you're like, I'm good. Like, I repented.
I did the, I prayed, Jesus, please forgive me my sins. You know, you're my Savior now, all that. I'm good. I'm filled with the Holy Spirit. Done. And here's what the mistake is that so many Christians are making. We're not realizing that repentance isn't a one-time event. Repentance, watch this, is a lifestyle. Repentance isn't something I did when I first gave my life to Christ. It is that, but repentance is every day saying, God, is there anything in my mind? Is there anything in my heart that is displeasing to you? And if there is, I wanna confess it. I wanna ask the blood of Jesus to be applied to it, and I wanna walk in assurance of forgiveness as a child of God. Repentance, again, not a one-time event. Repentance is a lifestyle. Why is that important? When we're talking about the Holy Spirit. Because the Bible says that when you tolerate sin in your life, you grieve the Holy Spirit. First Thessalonians 5, 19 takes it even further. Watch this. It says when you tolerate sin in your life, you can actually quench the Holy Spirit's work. Some of you are like, Brian's talking about the Holy Spirit. Pastor, he's talking about the Holy Spirit.
I want more of that, but I just don't feel like the Holy Spirit is ever working in my life. I think the number one reason why you and I aren't experiencing more of the Holy Spirit is because we are tolerating sin in our lives. We're tolerating pride. We're tolerating greed. We're tolerating lust. We're tolerating a spirit of offense that we're still holding something against somebody. We're tolerating drinking too much. We're tolerating drugs. We're tolerating greed. We're tolerating a lack of prayer. We're tolerating a lack of Bible reading. We're tolerating the fact that we never share our faith with anyone. And I just need to tell you, if you're tolerating sin, you are grieving the Holy Spirit. If you're tolerating sin, you are quenching the work in your life. And the best thing you can do, it's not rocket science. And just a reminder, sometimes the thing that's a sin for you is not a sin for somebody else. You're gonna tell them, I'm dealing with this, and they're gonna be like, oh, that's okay. That's normal. That's human. If the Holy Spirit is telling you it is not right for you, it is a sin, all right? We confess in that moment, and the glory and the grace of God is that the blood of Jesus Christ is sufficient. And if you've got the willingness to look your sin in the eye, Jesus has got willingness to put his grace over your sin that you might be forgiven, and that you might be filled with the Holy Spirit. And so one of the most important things we can do is repent. I take this so seriously. Last year, first semester at our church, September through December, we're like, man, God is
doing something. Man, just people coming to Christ all the time, you just sense the Spirit of God. Sometimes it's just, you don't even know how to put words to it. You just know something's happening here. Beginning of 2026, I sensed in my heart something shifted. I didn't know what it was. Just like in our church, I couldn't tell. But then over time, I started seeing even the outward evidences. It just doesn't seem like that we're locked in spiritually in the way we were first semester. And the way I always want to deal with something like that is I want to look inside first as a leader. It took a whole day where I just said, God, is there anything in my life that I need to pay attention to? Is there anything in my life that shouldn't be here that you want to call out? I'll tell you what, you ask God that question, he's going to tell you some things, right? And I remember, it was a long list after I was done, but I'll give you a few. I remember he convicted me because I saw that the book I'm writing was likely going to get a publishing deal with Baker, and I was feeling pride about that. I remember that I was sitting there and I hadn't even thought about this, but God pointed out to me that there was a friend of mine that got an amazing ministry opportunity. He's much younger than me. I've never had an opportunity, and I was jealous. I was jealous. Pointed out to me that there was a situation in my life I didn't know how I was going to solve, and I was feeling fear and anxiety about it. And how many of you know tolerating fear is a sin, ultimately, because you're not trusting Jesus? I just spent a day, and I just said, Holy Spirit, you show me, and every time you showed me something else, I'd write it down, and I said, I confess this before you, would you watch me clean with your blood, Jesus?
I know it's sufficient. Then after that, I went into our staff meeting that week, and I said, listen, guys, it feels like something's not as locked in spiritually around here as it was first semester. I don't know why that is. I don't know exactly, but here's what I can say. We don't want the work of God to be hindered by anything in our lives, right? And so I gave them, I've never done this before, I gave them a list of sins. It was a one-page front and back, all listed of biblical sins with their verses. And I said, here's what I want you to do, church staff, I want you to go around walking this building for 20 minutes, and I just want you to ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there is anything in your life that shouldn't be there. And if there is, bring it before Him. And they did that for 20 minutes, and we came back and we worshiped Jesus, and we thanked God for His grace, and can I tell you, when I look back on that specific meeting with our staff friends, the rest of the semester turned a corner at that point, and we see God move in fresh ways for the rest of those weeks. Repentance! Repentance! If you're hungry for the Holy Spirit, you can! can't tolerate sin. Amen? Amen. So this is the process. That's how you first receive the Holy Spirit. Now, the last thing I want to talk to you about is the pattern of receiving and being filled with the Holy Spirit again and again and again. Because thank God it's not just one time. Thank God. He just keeps coming and He'll keep giving you more if you're ready for it. And so here's the pattern. Acts chapter 4. At the very end of that chapter, Peter and John are jailed, thrown in prison, because they wouldn't stop preaching about Jesus. Okay? Good time for me to remind you, there is no such thing as a risk-free, cost-free version of following Jesus. I said that last week. If you're a Christian, it means you're carrying a cross of Christ. So here they are in jail. Now, eventually they get released. It says after they get released, they head back to their church family. Okay? In Acts chapter 4, verse 24, we read, when they, the church, heard what happened. When they,
the church, heard about these guys getting jailed and what it all went down. Listen to this. They raised their voices together in what? In prayer to God. And I remember Acts chapter 2, they were praying to God. I'm going to ask some of our team to come out right now and just bring us home here. Watch their, listen to what they're praying. Lord, I love this. Lord, consider their threats and enable. There's that word enable again. Lord, enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. They say, stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant, Jesus. Listen to this. After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken and they were all, somebody shout out all. Not some, not the special people, not the educated people, not the super spiritual people. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the word of God boldly. This is the pattern of being filled up with God's spirit again and again and freshly again. Two things. Number one, kingdom focused prayers. Number two, watch this, whole life obedience. Number one, kingdom focused prayers. Number two, whole life obedience. I like to think about what I would have prayed if I had just gotten released from jail. What would you have prayed? What would you have prayed? You were talking about Jesus, you got thrown in jail. What would you pray for? God, protect me? God, do something nasty to those mean people that just jailed me? It's okay, it's in the Bible, like Javis praying that all the time. God, if I go in again, protect my kids. God, you know, God, bind the enemy in this moment. All solid prayers, nothing wrong with any of those prayers. What's the early church pray for? Two of their own get jailed for preaching and these people pray, God, would you give us more power for spiritual boldness that we might keep talking about Jesus? And they pray, God, would you help us keep staying faithful? And it says, then the Holy Spirit falls on all of them. Pattern again, again, when Christians pray for God's purpose, with God's people, the Holy Spirit fills them. When Christians pray for God's purposes, with God's people, the Holy Spirit fills them. I know, I know a lot of you pray and some of you pray more than me, but I think the challenge some of us get into is, man, we get stuck in like self selfish prayers, self-centered prayers, and they're not bad prayers. God, help my marriage and help my kids. The kids are driving me crazy. I really need the Holy Spirit with the kids. God, help me, help me, help me. Not bad to pray any of those things. But man, how much of your time do you spend just praying for
God to work in the world? Praying for Him to bring lost people home. Praying that nations that have never heard about Jesus would receive a mission. Praying that God would raise up people to go. How often do you pray for your church? One of the reasons why I'm so excited for Awaken is because every time we gather for Awaken, we worship in community. We study the Bible in community. And guess what else we do? We pray for God. God's purposes in community and friends I'm just gonna tell you right now we're gonna pray for the heart of God on those nights and the Spirit of God is gonna show up that's why I want you to be there it's not for me I don't care I would listen I'd rather be with ten people in the room that are hungry for the Holy Spirit than a thousand people who are just going through the motions of church all right I just want to be in a room where people are saying God we want to align with you that's what I want to be that's awakened they prayed for God's purposes and they prayed for him in community and then it's important you don't miss this last thing Acts chapter 4 the Holy Spirit falls and watch this it's not just that they pray it's not just that they're filled with the Holy Spirit but the text says verse 31 they took action on what the Holy Spirit said and they went out and they spoke the Word of God boldly some of you are like I never hear from the Holy Spirit Brian you give us these times 30 seconds a minute to just listen I got nothing maybe the reason why you're not hearing anything from the Holy Spirit is because the last three times he's tried to say something to you you've ignored him he told you to walk across the room and the stranger you've never met and just say hey I feel like God's calling me to start a conversation or to pray for you is there something going on he told you to share your faith with a person at work and you're still debating that two years later because you wonder if it might be a little awkward he's called you to share a prophetic word with someone he's called you to open up your wallet and be generous towards a need and you're still hesitating and it may be the case you're not hearing from God because you keep telling him no when he says to do something to do something about it the early church they didn't just sit on promptings from the Holy Spirit they took action on them they
took steps because of them Jesus gives this great teaching in Luke 8 he says whoever follows through on his words listen to me whoever follows through on his words he said I'm gonna share even more with him but he said if if he gives you a word and you ignore it he's gonna pull back on anything he's even previously said and so friends I just want to encourage you man if God gives you something even today make sure you act on it like Oh pastor if it's the Holy Spirit or you know like is it just like I'm hungry for lunch or what's gonna I don't care like if you're since God's telling you to do something if it's not like quit your job then go out and do it take a risk and God is gonna see your heart of faith God's gonna see your eagerness to listen to listen and to be obedient and even if it wasn't quite right God's gonna go that's somebody who wants to do something with my words and he's gonna give you even more amen Church so here's how I want to end I want us to just have some time to pray okay we're gonna listen and no matter where you're at in your spiritual journey Christian non-christian I'm just gonna pray over you that God would speak to your heart even right now even to those online let's bow our heads let's bow our heads you God you created us not for a life of copy and paste day after day you created us for a life of purpose you created us for a life of spirit-led holy adventure and that is what we want that is what the Holy Spirit makes possible and God you've said the first step in our experiencing the work of the Holy Spirit is repentance it's turning from our sin and turning towards Jesus and there's some here who haven't yet take that first and fundamental step of just saying God I'm sorry for my sin today is the day that I call out to Jesus Christ as Savior and as Lord and so if you're here today and you want to take that step if you're here today and you want to give your life to Christ you want to receive the Holy Spirit then I'm gonna count to three and when I say three I'm just gonna ask you to raise your hand as a way of saying before God today is the day I'm giving my life to Jesus Christ not gonna embarrass you not
gonna call on you that hand raises a way to say before God today's the day I'm coming home to your family through Jesus blood and so one I want you to know that God loves you so much that he gave his son Jesus on the cross to die for your sins to the same Jesus who would die on a cross for sins was raised to life three days later in victory so that as you would put your trust in him you too could step into Jesus victory and three if you want to give your life to Jesus today I'm just gonna ask you to put your hand up in the air right now as a way of saying yes God this is my time yes God this is the moment I want to repent of my sins and give my life to you. If that's here and you go, I need to become a child of God, God bless you. Those of you who are taking that step, you're ready. Anybody who's gonna, yes Lord, today is the day I want to come home as a child of God. I want to pray right now. So Father, for each person who wants to take that step, I pray your blood over their sins that they would be free, that they would be forgiven. Would this begin a new journey of following Jesus as the Lord and the leader of their life? Staying in this place of prayer, I said this earlier, repentance isn't a one-time event, it's a lifestyle. So I'm gonna give you about 30 seconds, Christians, just to listen and to say, Holy Spirit, is there anything that I need to repent from? Anything I'm missing? Anything I'm tolerating? So Holy Spirit, even right now in these moments of quiet, would you speak to our hearts and for anything that you would prompt, might we confess it and ask the blood of Jesus to be sufficient for it. Thank you, Father, that your kindness leads us to repentance and even right now, as sins are confessed throughout this space, we say thank you, Jesus, for your blood. Now I'm gonna ask you, church, to do something that we haven't done here at Engeti for a while, maybe ever, I don't know. I'm gonna ask you to stand to your feet, we're gonna pray together, and one of the things that's really challenged me, I've seen this repeatedly in Scripture, is when the Holy Spirit, you know, comes, it's
when the people of God pray out loud, all at once, and together. Out loud, all at once, and together. And so here's what I'm gonna invite you to do in just a moment, I'm gonna count to three, and when I say three, I'm just gonna ask, could we fill this room with kingdom prayers? And when I say three, I'm gonna ask, you can just pray with some boldness that the Holy Spirit would give you, to pray for lost people to come home, to pray for churches to be planted, to pray for reconciliation in a relationship, to pray you'd have the boldness to share your faith, to pray for that person who needs to be invited to church. We're just gonna fill this room with prayers. I'm gonna ask the band to get all big so you're not exposed, don't you get worried about that, but could we just pray with some boldness? Get ready, one, two, three, let's fill this room with prayers. Pray with some boldness, church. Pray like you know the Holy Spirit has filled your life. Pray in a way you can't pray on your own. Pray that person who's far from God would be drawn back. Come on, exercise some boldness. Couldn't be enough timid about it. Fill the room. Fill the room. Nobody's judging you, you're in charge. Fill the room. The Holy Spirit is here. Fill the room. Fill the room. Call out to him, church. Call out to him for his purpose. Pray that Jesus would be glorified. Pray for revival. Pray that the church would move forward. Pray there'd be a great harvest of souls this fall. Pray for awakened nights. Pray for the move of God in our community. Pray for our country. Oh, can you pray for the kingdom church? Come on, let's pray for the kingdom church. Pray with some boldness. Yes, Lord. Yes, Lord. Yes, Lord. Yes, we pray. Enable your servants. Enable your servants. Speak your word with grace. Enable your servants that you would stretch out your hands to heal and to perform signs and wonders through the name of your servant, Jesus. Holy Spirit, fill this people with boldness that cannot be contained
that Jesus would be lifted up. Yes, Lord. Holy Spirit comes down when God's people pray for God's purposes in the community. And the Holy Spirit is here. Thirty more seconds to listen. Holy Spirit, is there anything you're saying to any one of us? Thirty seconds. If he says something to you, write it down. Don't forget it so you can take action on it. Holy Spirit, are you telling me to have a conversation? Holy Spirit, are you telling me to confess a sin? Not just to you, but to a trusted friend. Brother or sister, Holy Spirit, are you calling me to invite somebody to church? Write it down if you need to. Oh, Father, thank you for every word that you've given. Holy Spirit, thank you for every prompting you've shared. And now, God, I just pray that we would take the words that you have given us they would be met and matched by action. And as, Father, we take a next step, as we refuse to just receive from you and not do anything with it. But as we walk outdoors in a few minutes, would you live it out? Would we live it out? That we would see our power come to bear in our lives and even greater ways. We pray it in Jesus' name. And God's people said, Amen, Amen. Can we celebrate your life? Can we celebrate the power and the work of the Lord Jesus? Listen, our guys are going to walk with the Bibles down the aisles. If you made a decision for Jesus today or in recent weeks, wave at them.
They're going to be a gift of a Bible, a new book. But I want to end this day, friends, just asking, can we just go out strong and sing boldly and declare God is good and declare we're committed to making his name famous? Can we sing like that, church? Oh, let's do it. Let's worship Jesus together. ♪ Filling heaven to the overflows ♪ ♪ Get ready, get ready, get ready ♪ ♪ Cause it's time to go ♪ ♪ Get ready, get ready, get ready ♪ ♪ Cause it's time to go ♪ ♪ Get ready, get ready, get ready ♪ ♪ Cause it's time to go ♪ ♪ Get ready, get ready, get ready ♪ ♪ The only one we're after, revival ♪ ♪ Your spirit's taking over, just Jesus ♪ ♪ The only one we're after, revival ♪ ♪ Your spirit's taking over, just Jesus ♪ ♪ The only one we're after, revival ♪ ♪ Your spirit's taking over, just Jesus ♪ ♪ The only one we're after, revival ♪ ♪ Your spirit's taking over, just Jesus ♪ ♪ Revival, revival, revival, revival, revival ♪
