Easter at the Saenger

You know when the preacher gives up his mic, there's a lot of trust. There's a lot of trust. This is a great story. I hope you guys enjoy this. Johnny, tell us your story, man. We'll have a seat. Tell us your story. All right. So when Pastor Tim and I were talking about having this conversation, he's like, yeah, we're both going to have mics. And I was like, man, you know, I speak a lot with my hands. And you give me a mic, that's called a speech impediment. I'm going to have a problem sharing my message. But that's okay. We'll work around it. You have to message. So, you know, this is an incredible story. And I never thought I would be here sharing this story with you guys. Because if you ever thought about somebody that was probably the least likely to have a heart attack and you make a list of those people, I'd probably be at the top of your list. Johnny would never have a heart attack. He was in great shape, you know. And like Tim said, you know, we go to the gym every day, you know. We're in there, you know, 7 a.m. every morning getting after it. So least likely to have a heart attack.

But here I was, February 13th, had a heart attack. And not just any heart attack, a massive heart attack. It's called the Widowmaker. And they call it the Widowmaker for a reason. Because it's true to its name. Most of the time if you have this type of heart attack, you've got a very small percentage chance of making it. And I was actually playing basketball on, you know, at the Y downtown on February 13th. Felt like I had a little heartburn. Left a little early. And on the way home I was on the three-mile bridge and I called my brother and I was like, hey, man, I think I got some really bad heartburn. And, you know, being a cardiac anesthesiologist, he knows what heartburn can mean. And he was like, I want you to come to my house immediately. I was like, okay. That was at 5.03. And I never made it. And so right in front of Gulf Breeze Hospital, I mean, I'm sorry, Gulf Breeze High School, at the light right there, I wound up passing out. But here's the first miracle. For some reason when I was sitting at the light, I put my car in park right before I passed out. So that prevented me from, you know, pulling into the intersection and creating an accident. So that was the first miracle. And then I sat there unconscious and I wound up sitting through

one traffic light, you know, through another traffic light. So the light turned red and I read again. And then the lady behind me, she decides to go around. And when she was going around, she looked over, probably to give me a piece of her mind for sitting there so long. But she looks over and she sees a man slumped over his steering wheel, unconscious. And so she stops. Traffic's already backed up. And this is rush hour. This is 5 o'clock on a Friday in Gulf Breeze proper. People are trying to get to the beach. You know what that beach traffic looks like. So for her to stop, that was an incredible miracle. And that prompted the next miracle. And the gentleman that was behind her, he gets out of his car because she got out of hers. And that gentleman that got out of his car, his name is Dr. Luther Carter. He's one of the number one cardiac interventionalists in the area. It was an incredible, incredible miracle. So he goes up to my car and passed out. Somebody else came up. They have a tire iron. They try to break out the back window because the door is locked. And they hit it with the tire iron. Can't, you know, didn't break the window. Dr. Carter says, stand back, kicks the window in, drags my

body out of the car, and immediately starts CPR. And there were two nurses and an occupational therapist that were in the traffic behind him that got out and also decided to help out. And so they're all doing chest compressions. They're all doing CPR. Well, at 514, my brother, I never answered my phone. So at 514, my brother calls my phone. Somebody answers, but it wasn't me. And they say the words that no brother ever wants to hear. I don't know whose phone this is, but whoever's phone it is, they're doing CPR on him on the road in Highway 98. Brett rushes out the door. He jumps into his car, and he's only minutes away, and he flies up to the scene of the accident, hops over the curb. He comes in so hot, so fast that the one lady that was doing chest compressions, she thought he was going to crash into the fire truck that was already there. And so he hops out of his car, leaves the door open, keys in the ignition, the truck's still running, and he runs to my side. But what you have to know about this story is he wasn't just running to save a brother. He was carrying years, years of, we have a little brother. brother that passed away, it was 32 years ago, he's 20 years old, passed away in a car accident. And then less than three years ago, our sister passed away as well. So he's rushing to save his brother because there was no way that he wanted to lose another one on his watch.

And if there was anything that he was going to do about it, he was gonna make it happen. And so he rushes to my side and immediately begins CPR, immediately begins mouth-to-mouth, and that makes a huge difference in the outcome. And so that's miracle number three, right? Is somebody picks up my phone, answers it, and tells my brother where I am. Because if that guy doesn't pick up the phone, he doesn't know where I'm at and maybe doesn't get to me. So rushes to my side and begins CPR. So what's crazy is I am in what they call ventricular fibrillation at this time, V-fib. Which if you are in V-fib, the only cure for that is they have to defibrillate you. And for every minute that they don't, survivability is reduced by 10%. I was 60 minutes before EMS got there. Let that sink in. So if you have a widow maker outside of the hospital, this type of heart attack, you have a 5% chance of making it. I was in ventricular fibrillation and it was 60 minutes before EMS got there. That's 10 minutes, I mean, 10% chance of reduced survivability for 60 minutes. I'm in negative survivability, right, at this point. So ambulance gets there, Brett jumps in the ambulance with him, and thank God he does because EMS protocol

is to take you to the nearest hospital. They would have taken me to Gulf Breeze. Gulf Breeze didn't have what I needed. They didn't have the ECMO. They didn't have the Impella. They didn't have the cath lab. They didn't have the things I needed. So if they would have taken me there, they would have been able to sustain me for a little longer, but I wouldn't have made it. So it was that decision that made all the difference. So we go to Baptist Hospital. We get to Baptist Hospital, they finally stabilize me. And then they're transporting me to the cath lab only to have a second heart attack. And I go back into V-fib, and they've got to resuscitate me again. So at this point, it's been 90 minutes of CPR. And they get me to the cath lab, and at this point, everything is, it's looking better. And the blood starts to flow again. The procedure is successful. But what only the medical team knew was what those numbers meant. 90 minutes of CPR. After 30 minutes, the effectiveness of CPR is very, very low. And this is 90 minutes now. And we wound up, they put me on ECMO. Well, after 60 minutes of being in cardiac arrest,

ECMO is not that effective. You have to get that patient on ECMO before 60 minutes. After 60 minutes, the numbers decline. But when I showed up, my heart, its efficiency rate was at 18%. Normal is 55 to 70. And this is just kind of the way God works is those numbers, after the first day, they were a little bit better, but not much. And after the third day, again, they were a little bit better. And they did another echocardiogram the following day, and it was at 61%, which meant I had no heart damage. Brett looked at the numbers in disbelief. He's like, I can't believe this, 61%. You know, they had to defibrillate me 10 to 14 times. That type of assault on your heart, you should definitely have heart damage. And I didn't. So the other incredible thing is, at this point, 90 minutes of CPR, you should definitely have some type of brain damage, some type of neurological defect. And Brett knew that. And when I came out of the cath lab, I only later found out that I was doing something called posturing, which if you've ever seen an NFL football player get hit, and they have a concussion on the field, and their legs tighten up, and they clench their hands,

well, that is a sign of neurological damage. So when I came out, it looked like I had neurological damage. And Brett was. Extremely concerned about that and they wound up doing a CT and then a follow-up MRI and It confirmed what he was afraid of that there was infarcts in the brain that there was blame brain bleeding and So while it looked like they got me back, they weren't sure who they were getting back and So the whole family was extremely you can imagine You know Tentative in waiting for me to come out of this coma that I was in and by the grace of God when I came out I Woke up before I went in the hospital. I was fine when I woke up. I felt fine I looked at my other my other older brother and I'm like, what am I doing here? He's like you had a massive heart attack and you know, cuz he's our big brother. He teases a lot So I thought he's teasing me. I'm like shut up. No, seriously. What am I doing here? He's like no seriously you had a heart attack and I was like, oh my god, it's crazy And within days I wound up Fully recovery and they can't explain it So The best part the best part is I had a follow-up CT of my brain on March 20th so just about a month after this happened and We got the results and I showed the breath the results. We're at church and he was looking at ages And it said the brain damage that they saw it was completely resolved The Medical professionals they can't explain it. They don't know they don't know how how come I don't have any heart damage How come I don't have any neurological brain damage? They could they can't explain it, but we can because we know why You Five years ago, I was given a not just a verse but a life chapter

Isaiah 43 and in Isaiah 43 it says I love you You are mine. I call you by name and in there says I will give men for you And five years ago. I didn't really know What that would look like And here we are five years later, and I see all the people that God gave for me that day He lined him up there on Highway 98 to take care of me and Here you guys are you guys interceded for me in prayer and if you ever wondered if prayer works I'm living proof of that big You It was extremely humbling it was extremely humbling pastor Tim, you know he was there the first night and really every day with me and When I woke up and he told me about all the people who had come through the hospital Hundreds of people who had come through the hospital was extremely humbling and I told him I said, you know Tim You know, this must have been what it was like for Moses when God told Moses Moses I've heard the cries of my people God heard your cries And I thank you for crying out to God for me on my behalf and It's extremely humbling and it reminds me of another story the story of Lazarus and you know our dear friend Troy, you know, he was at the hospital he was reading out of the Bible praying for me and reading and one of the chapters that he read was John chapter 11 Many of you guys know that chapter. It's the story of Lazarus and while Troy's reading he's He's like, you know Johnny and I can't hear him. I'm in a coma, but he's talking to me because he knows I can hear And he goes Johnny. This is your story And little did he know that days later. I would come out of that a coma and Little did he know that years earlier

That that story of Lazarus. I had told my mom I was like, you know mom I believe that this is my story I believe God's gonna restore my marriage and it's gonna be a miracle on par with God Raising Lazarus from the dead. One of the interesting things in that story is God waited to restore Lazarus and He waited until after he was dead And his disciples, they're like, why did you wait? And then Mary and Martha, same thing. Lord, if you would have been here, our brother wouldn't have died. And what does he tell his disciples? Better for you that I waited so that you would see the glory of God. And then he tells Martha, he tells the people that are there, roll away the stone. And then he tells Martha, did I not tell you if you believe, you'd see the glory of God? So in that story, we see why God does things, what his will and his work is. It's so that people will believe and God will be glorified. And so I stand here before you today to share this story, not for me, but for you, so that you'll believe and that God will be glorified. And I'm here to tell you that just like when God said, roll away the stone, God's still rolling away stones. What he did for me, he wants to do for you.

He's here for you. He just wants you to reach out to him. He wants you to call on his name. He wants you to believe because he wants you to have eternal life. It's the gift that he wants to give each and every one of you and I'm here today because while I was yet a sinner, he died for me because he loves me and he loves each and every one of you. Amen. Amen, dad. Amen. Amen. That's John Sullivan, that's Johnny's dad. Amen. Praise God. I don't know if anything is more fitting than to say praise God. The resurrection didn't just happen. It definitely happened. And if you're here and you're like, I think faith is a crutch, I think I'm more scientific. I'm glad to know that because the more you actually dig in to the resurrection, you'll end up believing. There were eyewitnesses. The account has been told and we're here today. We're here today, not just because of the cross.

How many are thankful for the cross? I'm thankful for the cross. I'm thankful for the blood of Jesus that was shed. Without the shedding of blood, there's no forgiveness of sins. And while we were sinners, Christ died for us because he's for us. But the resurrection, it didn't just happen. The resurrection happened for you. For you. So that the resurrection can happen in you. And we celebrate every Easter about Jesus and Jesus is alive. And they put a stone in front to keep him in there. They didn't want his followers to steal the body. And then the greatest light show that ever took place happened Easter morning. And Jesus is alive. And Jesus is alive. It was a rich man's tomb, that was borrowed. There was a stone put in front of it, they sealed it, they put cards there and said, whatever you do, your life be's divided. Things in the balance do not let anyone steal his body and when the resurrection happened the soldiers are telling their bosses Listen, It happened boss. It happened. I can't deny it. It happened. I saw it They're like, well, we're gonna pay you a lot of money to lie And no lie has ever been strong enough to keep him in the grave He overcame death Hell and the grave and he took the keys from the enemy he took the keys

He has the power and authority and I wanted you to hear this story. I remember praying in the hospital And thinking Jesus when you bring Johnny out of it This is a beehive prayer a big hairy audacious goal prayer Because y'all didn't some of y'all did but you should have seen and we have pictures can we can we get some of the pictures Up here real quick. I mean we have a picture of John with machines around him and and just unbelievable This was the bottom right is when you are. All right Then we went to the gym that was the first day back in the gym this this man this beast of a man He's benching with 250 pound barbells in his hand. I'm dumbbells his hand. I'm like, dude, this is crazy Because I remember the machines and I remember Praying and begging God as all of us did And and dr. Brett, I remember that Saturday morning right after writing my message and the Lord Spoke to me in that waiting room And he said the the series you're starting tomorrow Is called acceleration and the verse I gave you is that God is gonna do it so fast. It's gonna make your head swim and the Spirit of God said to me Tell dr. Brett I'm like, are you sure? I will make sure this is you Lord you positive about this before I say something Because you know when it comes to healing we got to be careful What I do know is the more I pray for it believe for it the more I see it But God doesn't heal everyone here Oftentimes God heals people home And I did not want to speak Something that God had not spoken And I felt that still small voice As I have the courage and look at dr. Brett in the eyes and I look

in the eyes and I said Johnny is gonna come out. God is gonna heal him And God's gonna do it so fast. It's gonna make our heads swim And he did it dr. Brett He did it for his glory Glory We've worked out for five years normally five days a week I may have skipped a few leg days Confessions good for the soul. Where you at? Oh, it's today like Most of those workouts most of them We talk about Lazarus In God's glory And I got to see a modern miracle Church We have been able to see a modern miracle that Jesus didn't just rise from the dead Jesus still raises others from the dead And he does it physically And he does it emotionally And he does it sexually And he does it relationally and he does it financially He does it spiritually See the resurrection didn't just happen the resurrection Happened for you and for me so the resurrection could happen in you and in Me that's Jesus said I'm leaving the grave behind So you came to? In that same story John 11 He calls Lazarus by name and he says Lazarus come forth And had he not said Lazarus Had he just said come forth dead man Every dead man that had died would have come out of their grave Had he said come forth and not called Lazarus by name there'd have been a

lot of dead people brought back to life. In fact, when Jesus rose again, the Bible says that the graves of the Old Testament saints were opened and they were walking around Jerusalem. Abraham was walking. Isaac was walking around. Jacob, come on, Moses, Samson, right? David Solomon was walking around. Jeremiah, Isaiah was walking around. See, and he is high and he is lifted up. There's nobody left. All of a sudden there were more preachers preaching the resurrection. You know why? Because he got them out of their tombs. He got them out of their graves. He can do the same for you. He can do the same for you. And that's what the resurrection is all about. It's what it's all about. Jesus is alive and he is real. And when we sat in there and I looked in your eyes, Dr. Brett, you looked at me. I don't remember you saying a word, but I remember you smiling with tears in your eyes like, I really want to believe this. But you being who you are, know way more than I know. And you knew the reports and the numbers. I want to ask you to stand. Would you do that? Just Dr. Brett before everyone stands. This is Dr. Brett. Dr. Brett Sullivan. And when you showed up on the scene, you took charge. You took charge and you're like, you're going to do this. He's hating this right now. That's why I didn't tell you I was going to do this. You took charge and you told people, we're not quitting. We're not stopping. And you jumped in the ambulance, which I don't know is protocol. I don't think it is, but you kept it going and you were shocked. How many times did we say 14, 10 to 14 times? Probably more. Go ahead, John. I was just going to say, yeah, 10 to 14 times. Brett just said probably more. So it was incredible. I see we've got a few minutes. Do you want me to share the story about redemption? Y'all listen to this because you think you heard the best. We saved the best for last. Listen to this. So a lot of times, all the time, when God performs miracles, it's not just for the person He performs the miracle on. It's for everybody. All the witnesses and the people are there. So when he raised Lazarus, it was for Mary. It was for Martha. It was for the whole family. And this impacted us in a very unique way. You see my, again, my brother, he passed away. My little brother passed away 32 years ago. He was 20 years old. And Brett, my brother, had just finished up medical school. He was doing a fellowship at USA. And when we got the call, my brother was up in Birmingham, my little brother. Of course, we all raced up to be with him. And Brett got there first and being a doctor, he went straight to the hospital. And he went to work. But it was

Danny's time. My little brother, his name was Danny. And it was his time. And God was calling him home. And so he didn't make it. And can you imagine the weight of a brother that you carry for 32 years because you're a doctor? You went to medical school to be able to save people. And the one person that you want to save the most, your little brother, you can't. That wasn't God's plan, right? God's plan was to take Danny home. But despite that, you still carry that. And it's something that, you know, my brother, a burden that he's carried for a long time. And I was talking with my daughter, Michaela, about this. And she's got her master's in psychology. She's a counselor. So we were talking and she's like, I told her, you know, this is a miracle, not just for me, but this is a miracle for Brett, your Uncle Brett. And she's like, you know, Dad, in the medical field, they call that a corrective emotional experience. And what I have to do is I have to set that up for people in a safe environment. And we have to kind of stage it and walk through that. But Uncle Brett got to experience it firsthand. And she's like, that's so rare that somebody gets to experience a corrective emotional experience like that. And I told her, I said, Michaela, the medical field might call that a corrective medical experience. But I call that a redemptive experience. Jesus said, give me your burdens, I will carry your burdens. Yoke up with me, my yoke is easy, my burdens are light. And that day, he took Brett's burdens, that burden that he's been carrying, he redeemed that story. Because 32 years ago, he couldn't save Danny, but here we are 32 years later, and God used him to save me. Yes, he did. I love you, Brett. I love you more than you know. We have a very close, tight-knit family, and our creed amongst the brothers, is brothers forever. And, you know, when I was laying there, Brett was doing the chest compressions on me, and he yelled out, he screamed at me, and he was like, and of course I don't remember any of it.

But he screamed at me, and he was like, don't you die on me, Johnny. Don't you effing die on me. Sorry. Momentum Church is a perfect place for imperfect people. Yeah. I'm thankful for that. How many are thankful for that? Come on. So when I was coming out of my coma, I looked at the couch that was directly across from my bed, and I see Brett. He is just beaming. He looks like he just won the lottery. And he's just so excited, so happy. And, you know, I'm talking, and that's, you know, made him even happier, right? Because he's like, man, he's going to be okay, fully intact. No heart damage, no brain damage. This is amazing. What a miracle by God. And so he had to leave. He had to go back to work. And before he did, he bends over at my bed, and he whispers in my ear, and he goes, thanks for not dying on me. I was like, it's the least I could do. But it was an amazing story of redemption. And we wanted to share that with you today, because it's Resurrection Sunday. God resurrected me. And not only did He resurrect me, but He redeemed me, and He redeemed the story for Brett. And He can redeem you as well. And all God's people said. Isn't that an incredible story?

Johnny, thank you so much. So proud of you. I love you. I thank God several times with tears that you're still here, except for leg day. Dr. Brett, I love you. I'm thankful. Troy, Troy came a couple, I don't know, five, six Christmases ago and gave me a gift on Christmas Eve. And I was sick. And I said, don't get too close. I was sick. And he said, I got a gift for you. He gave me a great gift. He looked at me in the eyes and he said, I'm not there yet, but Merry Christmas. And to know that you're the one that God used to read John 11, the story of Lazarus. Unbelievable. We prayed in our men's group. We got men right here. Men, if you're in our men's group, stand up. Wild at heart, just real quick. Stand up. If you're in our wild at heart men's group, stand up. Stand up. Look at this. Thank you guys. You be seated. We prayed and we prayed. And then not too long ago this fall, Troy crossed the line of faith. I'm sitting up here and the Lord was like, tell them about Troy. Troy, he gave you life to Christ.

And being a believer doesn't mean you have all of the answers. Can I just tell you the truth? I don't have all the answers. My mom was killed in a car accident when I was four and a half by a drunk driver. She was 32. I don't have the answers. But what I know is God makes no mistakes and I trust him. And he's never left me. And I saw him with my own eyes, the disciples said. And we could say, family and friends, we saw him with our own eyes. you back to life. Because on that Friday night, Troy, when you called me, Dr. Brett, when you called me, both of your feet were in the grave. But God, but God. And that's good for you too. See, you cannot out send the love of God. You can't. Eighth grade, I'm angry at God, I point up, I curse God out. I say, I'll never preach for you. You killed my mom. And if God was the God that some of you've been told, or the picture's been painted, that he is, he would have been, be no more you. But he didn't. He not only saved me by his grace, but by the same grace of God,

a grace I could never earn, a grace I could never deserve, he called me to preach. And I just believe that today, you need to know the resurrection didn't, it happened for you. So it can happen in you. And if you've never experienced the power of the resurrection, can I take two minutes and tell you how you can? You call on his name. His own disciples didn't believe. If they believed, they would have been at the tomb. The Bible says there was several women. One of them, Mary Magdalene. They were there to take care of the body, but not because they expected there to be no body. In fact, nobody expected no body. Or they'd have been like, let's get this on Instagram. Three, two, one. No, no, no, no. They were there grieving and weeping in deep anguish and sorrow. And they found an empty grave. And the angel said, why are you weeping? And then Mary Magdalene saw a man who she supposed was the gardener. She thought he was the gardener. You know what gardeners do? They get their hands dirty.

Oh, Jesus is the great gardener. He made us. And just like when he made Adam and he made Eve and they messed it up, he came to make it right. She thought he was the gardener. And he said, why are you weeping? Just tell me what you've done to the body, where they've taken him. She's weeping. And he said, Mary. And she, her tears went from sorrow to joy. And that is the picture of the resurrection is that Jesus can take your life. The one that you've been trying to control. Why is that song, Jesus take the will so popular? Cause we don't like giving it up. I don't know about y'all, but I'm like, Jesus take the will, now give it back. In our sin, in our rebellion, we have run from God. All of us like sheep have done dumb things. We've gone our own way. You can get a sheep out of the ditch and that sheep will run right back to the ditch. And you get the sheep back out of the ditch and the sheep smiles and goes right back to the ditch. It's kind of how we, how it is as sinners, how we are as sinners. But while we were sinners, God showed us, he demonstrated how much he loved us. And he died on the cross.

Now, listen, we're almost done. Watch this. On that cross, Jesus absorbed the wrath of God because your sin must be, my sin must be punished. There's an old story about a king. A lot of gold was stolen. And the king said, whoever, when we find whoever it is, you will be executed. Fast forward the story, it ended up being the king's own daughter. The justice of the king knew that he had to keep his word, but the love of the king did not want his own daughter to die. So they bring his daughter out guilty, convicted, She's sentenced to die, 40 lashes, 40 would kill you, 40 lashes, and as that big soldier drew back, quite possibly this cat of nine tails, the king said, no, and the king left his throne, as everyone was watching, and the king laid on top of his daughter, and he said, now, for he was just, and he's loving, 100% on both sides. Because he was loving, he laid his life down, because he was just, that crime had to be punished by death. Do you know scripture says greater love has no one than this, that a man would lay down his life for his friends. That's what Jesus did for you. He knows all about you, and Jesus still says, I love you, and I choose you, and I forgive you, and as many as believe, and as many as receive the gift of God, which is Jesus, scripture says to them, they're given the right to be called the sons and the daughters of God, for whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. You have not sinned too much, you've not ran too far, you've not fallen too low, where the grace of God can't go. Would you bow your heads, would you close your eyes, this message has an invitation included, and Jesus says, come to me, come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and Jesus says, not religion, Jesus says, I will give you rest. I just believe there are a lot of people, we just believe there are a lot of people, and you've been running from God, doing your own thing.

And today, Jesus says, I want to cover you, I want to cleanse you, I want to forgive you, I want to save you. Would you turn to him today, like the thief on the cross, he went from cursing to calling on the name of the Lord, like the soldier who was in charge of the crucifixion, he took a knee, and he declared, surely, this is the Christ, the son of the living God. He confessed him. If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved. I want to leave you with a prayer, I want to lead you in a sinner's prayer. I'm going to encourage you to pray it at our church, we pray it out loud, and you only get saved once, you're born into God's family once, but those of us that have experienced this resurrection, we're going to pray it with you, so you don't pray it by yourself. And at the end of the prayer, I'm going to ask you to be bold, and raise your hand, so we can give God the glory. Would you pray with me to God, you're not praying to me, you're not praying through me, we're going to pray right now, we're going to pray, would you repeat after me and say, Jesus, thank you for loving me. I receive your love, and all that comes with it. Thank you for your blood, your death, and your resurrection. I receive it. I give a total claim to my life. I declare Jesus as Lord. And I now give you my life, and I receive your life. Now teach me how to live. In Jesus name, amen. Amen. Would you look up. In Revelation, the last book in the Bible, Jesus says this, and it's a great opportunity. He said, whoever is not ashamed of me in front of men, I will not in front of people, I will not be ashamed of. in front of my father in heaven. When you call on his name, your sins are not only forgiven, they're deleted. They're gone, only they can't resurface.
