What a crowd, good to see you guys. If we haven't met, I'm Dan Sutherland, I'm one of the pastors here, my privilege to teach today and thanks for being here.

We give together every week. It's a reminder to us that worship involves us giving ourselves back to God. And it obviously includes our worship and our devotion and our praise. It includes our hearts and minds, we listen to God's word, also includes our finances. So these service guides are going to pass buckets, if that's your way to give, go for it. I give online, most of us do that. Some of us give at the kiosk outside. However you're giving. Here's the cool part, guys, the thousand people we're trying to reach over three years is happening slow but sure, solid, steady, because of your generosity. So thanks for that, proud of you. Turn to somebody and say, way to be generous, go ahead, tell them. It's a good thing. It is a way, way, way good thing. We're wrapping up a series today that we have called Warning Signs. It's based on a promise from Jesus who told us that he was going to go back to his father and told the disciples, I won't leave you alone, I'm going to send my spirit and my spirit will live in you and will live through you and he will guide you and specifically he said, my spirit will warn you about things to come. Hence the idea, warning signs, similar to the warning signs on the dashboard of our car or on the highway as we drive down the road. You can ignore the warning signs and get in trouble or you can pay attention to them and live a lot easier life. We've covered four warning signs from the spirit of God so far. Sometimes week one, the spirit says, stop. Stop acting like that, stop that attitude, stop that thinking, stop, stop, not the way I want you to go. Sometimes week two, we talked about, the spirit says, surrender, hey, you haven't given that to me or this part of your life is still under your control, yield to me here and we have

to surrender this way to God as well as surrendering to the people that God puts in our lives in places of spiritual authority. Week three, we talked about U-turn, the idea of repentance, that we're headed the wrong direction, we have to stop the direction we're going, make a turn and go in the right direction. We have to stop walking into our sin and we have to turn and start walking back toward God. Last week, fun week called deer crossing, one of my favorite highway signs. I remember when my daughter was little, she'd say, daddy, how did the deer know this is where they're supposed to cross? She thought it was like a school crossing, you know, a crosswalk for the deer, that was fun to explain. Garland led us last week, perfect guy because he is a walking definition of strong and gentle and he talked about not running over people in your life. Sometimes the Spirit says, hey, back off, ease up, brute force, anybody can use. How about some finesse? How about some gentleness? How about some kindness? Today we're going to talk about, for me, a fun sign but maybe the one that we need the most. It's called no parking, no parking. Don't get in neutral, don't get stuck in following Jesus, no parking is the subject today. This past summer, Mary and I did a three plus week car vacation, drove 4,000 miles in her little orange Subaru. Now for some of y'all, you're thinking, that sounds like purgatory. For me, it was a blast, I love being with my wife, she's my best friend, we talk, she sleeps while I drive, occasionally I sleep while I drive, you know, it's just a great time. So we went to Texas, saw her sister, went to Arkansas, saw the kids and grandkids in the Ozarks, then went to North Carolina for a week alone, best part, we went to our favorite

North Carolina town, Blowing Rock. I love Blowing Rock, if you haven't been there, you need to go, quaint, awesome. little main street downtown with all kinds of shops that don't look like they have changed in decades. And Mary thinks a sale sign is a sign from God. In fact, she wanted me to do a sixth week in this series called Sale Sign. Said, babe, I'm not sure I can make that case biblically. She said, I can. She probably could. But every day, our routine was we'd get up, sleep in, have a little brunch, and I would drive down the main street of Blowing Rock, and she would pick out the cool store she wanted to check out that day, and she'd say, right here, babe, right here. So I'd stop, hit the flashers, get her out of the car, she'd go in, and I'd spend the next hour trying to find a parking place in downtown Blowing Rock, and I swear, half the parking spaces I found had a no parking sign. No parking loading zone. No parking fire zone. No parking we're trying to drive you crazy zone. I mean, it was just like this all over. And I got to thinking, because I knew in June we were doing this series in July and August, we need some help with this parking idea as Christ followers. We're gonna write a bunch of stuff in our notes today.

You ready? Let's get it going. Here is the first one. There's no parking when we follow Christ. It's real easy for us to let off the gas. It's real easy for us to put things in neutral gear spiritually. It's easy for us to take a break, and yet, biblically, we are absolutely warned, don't do that. Here's another way to say it. There's no neutral gear when we follow Christ. Now, I love to ask people, how are you doing with Jesus? What's Jesus teaching you? Because I'm a pastor, they halfway expect that, but I enjoy the conversation. And a lot of times, people will say, you know, things are okay. You know, I'm not doing anything bad. They always want one of their pastors to know that. But, you know, I'm not necessarily jumping ahead either. I'm coasting. I'm taking a little break. Things are just floating along. Listen, church, no such thing. No such thing. Even when we think we're sitting still, not going forward, not going away from Christ, we are slowly drifting away. I've spent enough time in rivers and streams

to know that if you get in an inner tube and still water, it will always drift downstream. It is simply a scientific law, a spiritual law as well. So here it is. We must always keep moving forward. Write that in your notes. We wanna keep moving forward. This is why the apostle Paul in the book of Philippians said, do this, guys. Forget what lies behind. Press forward to what lies ahead. The calling of God in Christ Jesus is forward. Now, why is this a big deal? The scripture really is big on not getting into neutral, on not being lukewarm, on not just floating along. In fact, listen to this verse, Revelation 3. God is the one speaking here. You are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other, but since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. Anybody have any doubt about how God feels about us coasting, about us being lukewarm, about us parking, about us taking a break? We always want to move forward. So how do we do that? Here's the main outline for the teaching today. We're gonna talk first about the dangers of being in neutral, the dangers of parking. Secondly, we're going to talk about the idea

of recognizing where we tend to park because we tend to fall in a rut and get in neutral at the same point again and again and again. And lastly, how do you get out of that parking zone? Step one, realize the dangers of parking, the dangers of parking. It was funny, when my dad gave me the car keys for my first date, he gave me this advice. He said, son, when you drive, drive. If you're gonna park, park. Now he was talking about something more than the car. Are y'all with me? me? Dan, if you're going to smooch the girl, park the car." My mom hit him. I thought it was great advice. I passed it on to my son, who evidently figured it out. He has four kids. But the point is there are dangers in parking. There are dangers in getting in neutral. There are dangers in floating along. Let me give you three. See if you've ever experienced any of these. The first danger is stagnation. Stagnation. Scientific fact. Still water produces disease. It's what it does. Some of us think you can open one of these and put it on your nightstand and pick it up a month later and it's still purified water. No, it's not. It's had your germs breeding in it for the last month. Now, it's your germinated water, but it's no longer clean. It's no longer pure. It is stagnant. It is set still. What's stagnate mean? Write it in. To stop developing, growing, and progressing. That's a dictionary definition of stagnate. To stop developing, growing, and progressing. If a child in the womb stops developing, stops growing, and stops progressing, the child dies in the womb. If a one-year-old all of a sudden that's been healthy stops developing, stops growing, and stops progressing, you're in trouble. We are supposed to keep moving. And water, but it still becomes contaminated. And in my spiritual life, when it's still, also becomes contaminated.

Listen to this description of still or stagnant water. Still water is dangerous primarily because it acts as an incubator for pathogens and parasites. Without the effect of a current movement, standing water can accumulate bacteria and become a primary breeding ground for disease. If there's any state in the U.S. that knows that still water can produce disease, it's Florida. Still water. Want mosquitoes? It's around still water. Want bacteria? It's around still water. Stagnation can get us when we're floating in park with Christ. Compromise is the second one. Compromise can get us. Now, how does that work? When we're pursuing Christ and we're going after Him, our heart is so set on Him that we're not as tempted to get off track. But when we quit moving forward with Jesus, all of a sudden we compromise our beliefs, or we compromise our morals, or more sad, we compromise both. I rarely see Christ followers who are actively pursuing Jesus fail morally. Rarely. But if you've got a Christ follower, even one that's been used by God in big ways, that all of a sudden gets in neutral, gets in park, starts floating, is not chasing Jesus anymore, moral compromise is a matter of time. Look at what Scripture says. Joyful are those who obey God's law and search for Him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil. Seek Jesus. Evil's not near as attractive. Go after Jesus. Compromise is not near as likely. But when you quit growing in Christ, you start doing things you know better than to do. When you quit growing in Christ, you start deciding things you wouldn't normally decide. Stagnation, one danger of being in park. Compromise, second danger. Third one's the one that gets me. Loss of impact. Loss of impact. When you're walking with Jesus, when you're fresh in that relationship, when you're pursuing Him, God begins giving you, look this way church, added spiritual impact, added spiritual influence. All of a sudden what God's doing on the inside becomes obvious to those that are outside you. All of a sudden they start seeing, man, you're gentler than you used to be, Sutherland. You're calmer than you used to be. You're quieter than you used to be. For a Sutherland, that's miraculous. You're less angry than you used to be. What's going on? What's going on is the character of Sutherland is fading and the character of Jesus is growing because

I'm pursuing Him. But when I quit pursuing Him, that anointing that impact, that influence, begins to fade. And all of a sudden, I'm somebody God used to use rather than somebody God can still use. All of a sudden, I'm somebody who used to point people to Jesus, who all of a sudden doesn't point people to Jesus very well at all. This is the story of King David. We'll talk about him more in a minute, but he's the most successful king in the Old Testament, the most loved king. Nobody had the reverence, when his name was used, that the Jewish people gave to David. Thrill, honestly, to this day, the honor that they give to David is amazing. And he got so high on his own success that he began drifting away from God. And as he drifted away from God, he commits adultery, he commits murder, he becomes somebody that's not looking at all like the person he used to be, and his impact fades. He's not allowed to build the temple where the people worship because of how many times he's blown it. We don't want to lose impact. You lose joy, you get guilt and shame in its place, and you lose the sense of God's presence. So, I think we want to be out of the neutral zone. I think we don't want to park. I think we don't want to float

because it will cause us these three things. Stagnation happens, compromise happens, loss of impact happens. Step two, recognize where you tend to park. Now, we're all unique, but we're also all human beings. And anybody that has studied social sciences, psychology, sociology, any kind of behavioral science will tell you that human beings are people that follow patterns. And we tend to repeat the same pattern over and over and over again. Parents, you know that. You've watched your children do it. If you're married, you know the pattern that your spouse follows. And if you're honest with yourself, you can find your own pattern as well. But here's the problem. Doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result is called insanity. Do the same thing over, you get the same result. So, how do we identify where we get stuck? How do we identify what pushes us into park? What pushes us into neutral? Three places people get stuck. Listen for the one that's yours. I'll tell you the one that's mine. We tend to get stuck at points of pain. Would you write that in? Points of pain.

Pain is the place many of us stop seeking God. Revelation promises us that heaven will be a remarkable place. Listen to the description. No death, no sorrow, no crying, no pain. Sign me up today, I'm ready. As a 70-year-old, I'm at the point in life I sit up every morning on the side of my bed and try to figure out which part of my body is hurting this day before I get up. And if you're not there yet, hang in, it's coming. And on days where I'm going, well, my right knee hurts, which is weird, because it's been replaced, but my left knee hurts, I get that, it needs to be replaced, and my back hurts, and I'm thinking, why am I getting up? Let me just go back to bed. We get stuck at the point of our pain, even truer with emotional pain. Some of us have things that happened in our childhood or in an earlier adult relationship that still cause us pain, that we still haven't resolved. Hey, church, it's not gonna go away by itself. And whoever said time heals all wounds has never had cancer. Whoever said time heals all wounds has never had an infection. Ignoring your pain often makes your pain bigger. My wife is at this point right now.

She has just had her second knee replacement a week ago Thursday, 10 days ago. And this one was different, she knew what to expect. She'd kind of been there before. She had the first one in March, she recovered so fast. Doctor said, we'll do the other one end of July. So they took her into the operating room, she's still alert, they haven't given her any drugs yet. And they're supposed to have already covered the table where the surgery tools are. And she's still in there, she's still in the operating room. If you're in the medical realm, you know that you cover that And they're supposed to have already covered the table where the surgery tools are. with a cloth before the patient comes into the room. They wheeled her in, and here's the tools. Here's what she saw. A hand saw, which they use in need of replacement. A hammer, which they use in need of replacement. A drill, which they use in need of replacement. All of this is sitting there, and the nurse sees her and flips the cloth quickly. If you want to be just grossed out thoroughly, Google need of replacement surgery and watch it this afternoon. It's brutal, and she's at the point 10 days in where her pain has gone from a nine, 10 level to now it's about a seven, eight, but she's at the point where she has two choices. I could do the physical therapy,

which will make my pain even higher momentarily, but will improve the healing and eventually make my pain go away, or I can decide now I'm just gonna ignore it and live with this level of pain the rest of the way. Those are the choices. Those are the choices, and it's true with emotional pain as well. You can get stuck at your point of pain. Now, here's the problem. Some of us think when you follow Jesus, pain goes away. Eh, have you looked at Jesus? He followed his father all the way and ended up being crucified. Pain does not go away. In fact, Matthew says God gives his sunlight to the evil and the good, sends his rain on the just and the unjust. Don't get stuck at your point of pain. This is the reason we have counselors here at the church. This is the reason we have therapists. We recommend don't get stuck in your pain. Turn to your neighbor and say, don't you be my pain. Go ahead. Don't be my pain. Yeah, in Jesus' name. There you go. Yeah, we tend to get stuck at points of pain. That's not yours. Here's the second place.

We tend to get stuck in our points of success. Oh, this one's crazy. We get stuck in the place of our success. We seek God and we put him first. We work hard, we honor him, and he's generous with us, and he blesses us, and we find success, and here's the problem. After a time, people who find success start doing this. Are you watching? Good job, Sutherland. Look what you did. Look what you built. Look how smart you are, and though God got us there, we start talking about it like we did it. You have just become stuck in your success. South Florida is full of rich people, successful people, who are stuck at the point of their success because they've quit going after God. They don't have to anymore. They got money. They got success. The problem is it's a hollow success. Rockefeller, the richest man in his generation 100 years ago, was asked how much money is enough, and he said one million more, and then a million more, and then a million more, and what's the point? The point is you're stuck in your success. The pain is now you gotta have more and more and more and more success. What does that accomplish?

How does that honor God? Genesis 39 tells us about Joseph. It says the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. I like the example of Joseph even better than the example of David, because David's success went to his head. I'm the most loved king in Jewish history. I'm the most successful king in Jewish history. I'm the best military conqueror in Jewish history. Me, me, my, my, oh wait, I'm exceptional. The rules that apply to everybody else don't apply to me. I want my best friend's wife. I'll just go get her. I want him out of the way. I'll just arrange for him to be killed in battle. Joseph, on the other hand, for the last 11 chapters of Genesis, has success but keeps honoring God, has success but keeps honoring God, has success but keeps honoring God. First place we get stuck is our pain. Second place we tend to get stuck is our success. Here's where I tend to get stuck. I tend to get stuck in my failures. I'll be honest, this is the one that gets me. If I fail at the same thing enough times, I eventually want to say, what's the point? What's the point? God, I've tried this, and I've tried it,

and I've tried it, and I can't beat it. I'm done. And we get stuck in a cycle of failure. The scripture speaks to this clearly. Proverbs 24 says, the godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. Now, for the literal people who like to read the Bible word for word, that does not mean try seven times, then you can quit. Seven is the number of completion, the number of ongoingness, the number of continuation in the Hebrew language. What it's saying is, a godly man falls and gets up every time. Every time. Write this in your notes. The only failure that's final is my failure to keep getting up. You decide you're down for the count and you're not gonna make the effort again, you're stuck in the pain of your failure. First, realize the dangers of parking. Stagnation, compromise, loss of impact. Second, recognize where we tend to park. Some of us park in our pain. Some of us park in our success. My favorite, I tend to park in my failure. Step three, here's the good news. How do we move forward? How do we get over this?

How do we commit to moving forward? It will take a recommitment to move forward. Nobody moves forward out of park, out of neutral, without making a deliberate effort. You don't fall forward into getting closer to Jesus. You have to decide, I am not gonna stay in neutral. I'm not gonna float. I am going to get my bodegity in spiritual gear. How do we do that? Three things, simple, important. One, identify one right next step. Some of you have been listening to me speak about every third weekend for three years. Others of you that have been at local church long-term know I used to come out a couple times a year before that and speak. You've heard me say what I'm about to say and I'm gonna keep saying it because it's one of the most important spiritual truths there is. You have to identify one right next step. People who get convicted and say, oh, I'm gonna change everything in my life. Let me let you know how that's gonna go. You'll blow that by Monday. Nobody can change everything at once. We're not wired that way. When you drive out of the parking lot this afternoon, you can't go north, south, east, and west all at the same time.

In fact, with our parking lot, you can only go south. Now you may repent and head back north just a couple hundred yards down, but you can't drive every direction at once. That's called going in a circle. Okay, I'll go east, north, west, south, east, north, west, south. All you're doing is making a circle that eventually becomes a rut. One step at a time. Life change, one step at a time. Marriage change, one step at a time. Parenting change, one step at a time. Whatever it is, it's one step at a time. Get you one. Maybe start praying again, start reading the word again, start serving again, something to surrender to God, something specific. We'll talk about that in a minute. Number two, get help and accountability from your friends. I want you to write in an extra word. Get help and accountability from your godly friends. People cannot give you what they do not have. You would not ask your broke friends for a loan. They don't have it. When you ask your ungodly friends for godly advice, they don't have it. Don't expect them to have it. Had a decision I needed to make this past week. Church that I pastored for years has asked me to come back,

do something, and I had to work through, okay. Am I a distraction going back, and I'm gonna get in the new pastor's way going back? What is it they want me to do? Why is it, I just had some confusion for a moment working through, and I'm praying about it, and I think, you know what? I'm gonna seek the help of my friends. So I found three of my godly friends, to him that afternoon, and I want to thank publicly Graham and Marcelo and Garland, Garland who's sitting outside. I asked him for advice. They all gave it to me. I made the decision that night. I got peace about it. You don't need to do this following Jesus thing alone. Look at what Ecclesiastes says. Two people are better than one that can help each other succeed. Three are even better, for a triple braided cord is not easily broken. I did a one right next step, get help and accountability, and here's the biggest one. Ask God to help you move forward. Oh, this is fun. Ask God to help you move forward. I want to talk with Pastor Eric about us doing a series on the prayers God always answers. There are certain prayers God will say yes to every time. One of you, make me more like Jesus. He'll do that. You're serious about it, he'll do it. Help me be a more loving father, mother, parent, family member. He'll do that. Give me patience, Lord. He'll do that. How about this one? Lord, help me move forward again. Help me get out of neutral. Help me get out of park. He will do that. The psalm says, have mercy on me, oh God, because of your unfailing love, because of your great compassion. Blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. This series has been a series of action. We're asking everybody each week to pray in a moment of silent reflective prayer. One specific thing, do you see the last blank that we want you to pray? Don't have to fill it in yet. Pray about it. God, what have you said to me in the last few weeks? Some of you are going to write in something you need to stop doing. Somebody's going to write in something you need to surrender to Jesus. Maybe your something's going to be a U-turn you need to do. Or your something's going to be a somebody that you

need to be kinder to. Or maybe it's like we talked about today. Your something is, get your backside out of neutral and start going after Jesus again. Get out of park and go after God. I want us to pray that prayer for about 30 seconds. Silently ask God to speak to you. Will you do that? Let's pray. Father, show me the one thing you want me to do right now and I'll do it. Show us Lord. Father, thank you for the prayers you will always answer. Thank you that when we ask you to show us what to do, your book says that's wisdom you will always give. That's information you will always share. So help us today to do what you've shown us to do. In Christ we make this prayer. Amen. We're going to offer one other response today. We do this three or four times a year. If God gave you your one thing today and you want to stand up and tell others that that's happened and you want to be prayed for, I'd love to pray for you. The whole church is going to pray for you. So when we sing this next song, if that's you, just come and stand. We'll make this edge of the stage an altar. Nobody ask you to say anything or sign anything. Just want you to have a chance to say publicly, I got my one thing. I'm going to do it and I'll pray for us. So will you stand to your feet?
