Discipleship Class #2 - Assurance of Salvation

Alright, welcome to our discipleship class number two. I do want to remind you that there are PDFs so you can actually download the sheet and print it yourself because you have to write on it. But if you don't have access to a printer, you could always just get a notebook. Just get a notebook anywhere and just, you know, title the discipleship class. And that way you can put class one, class two, class three, because all of the classes are going to have things for you to fill in. But this one is discipleship class lesson number two out of six. And this one is titled Assurance of Salvation. So I want to say congratulations. You are a child of the Heavenly Father, according to Acts 17, 28 and 29. And from this point on, you can come into a new relationship with God and receive all of his promises. So we're going to start with number one. We're going to review how we receive eternal life through Jesus. And we're going to start off there. With what is the result of sin? And the scripture says in the book of Isaiah 59 and 2, it says, but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God and your sins have hidden his face far, far from you so that he does not hear. So number one, the sin, the result of sin is the separation between you and God. And so this is step one to understand what condition someone is in before they come into Christ. So after reading Isaiah 59, 2, the second thing, or B as it says on the sheet, it says people try many different ways to find God, yet they fail. Why? So we're going to be reading Ephesians chapter 2, verses 8 through 9. So now we're at number B. B is people try many different ways to find God, yet fail. So we want to read in Ephesians chapter 2, verse 8 and 9. Now I just want to say, as we're reading these scriptures and we're going to read it through,

we're going to give our take and put it in our two cents. But what we also want you to do is take some time and take these scriptures and write it down yourself, rewrite it in your words, you know, in not changing the meaning, not changing the context, but just in a way so that way you can write it into there in what sticks out to you. You know, it's just a great exercise to be able to think through the scriptures, meditate on it, chew on it a little bit, other than just writing it without thinking. Because what we want you to do, you know, the word, the scripture says meditate, meditate on the word. And the typical definition of that word meditate literally means to chew the cud. Like a cow just chews slowly. As a new believer and a new Christian, we want you to chew the cud, chew slowly, get the life out of the scriptures, get the juice, get everything out of there. Let it digest slowly and right in your spirit, in your heart and in your actions. That's what we want to do. So let's go ahead and jump in to Ephesians chapter two, verses eight and verse nine. And it says, for by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing. It is the gift of God. Not a result of works so that no one can boast. I'm going to read it again. For by grace, you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing. It is the gift of God that a result of, it is a gift of God, not a result of works so that no one may boast. Several key points here that I want to just point out. You're not saved by faith. You're saved by grace through faith. You have to have faith for grace to take place. So there's a connection there. And understand that as a Christian, this is a hard concept sometimes that we want to really

dig down deep. And it's this. Faith is a privilege. Faith is an honor. Faith is a privilege. God gives us the ability to have hope. Hope through what? Hope in his word, hope in Christ, hope to the spirit, hope of a better life. Through hope, hope is the foundation of faith. Because if you can have hope, you can jump into faith. Faith in what? Faith in the work by his grace that he did for you and me. He did the work. Because the question is, people try many different ways to find God yet fail, why? Because people will try to find a way apart from having faith in him and receiving the free gift that he gave. You have to have faith to receive it. And you can't receive it apart from faith. And faith is built on hope. So I want to reread it one more time. For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing. Not yours, not mine. It is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. So that when you, the first phase, separation from God, the second thing you have to understand is you didn't do it.

He did it all for you. Now we're at number C. The first one, I'm just gonna refresh. What is the result of sin? Isaiah 59 and two. Separation from God. People try many different ways to find God yet fail, why? Ephesians 2, eight and nine reminds us that we receive grace but through faith. Now everyone just doesn't have grace just because they were born. They have to receive it by faith. Now number C. This is the third one. How does God draw us to himself? Set first Peter chapter three and verse 18 says, for Christ also suffered once for sins, for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous. I'm gonna say it again, for Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous. So how did God draw us to himself? By the work of Jesus. So we're separated from God, number one. Number two, he gives us an opportunity to come close through faith to receive grace. And what does that grace do? That grace takes us as the unrighteous coming in and what they call, Martin Luther called this the great exchange. We exchange our sin for his holiness.

Our unrighteousness for his righteousness. Our dirty rags for his white robe. And as Paul says later on in the New Testament, put off the old man and put on the new. This is part of how we can review the eternal life through Jesus Christ that we want you to understand. This is what took place. When you came in, you were separated from him. When you heard the message, there was hope. So you believed and expressed faith in him. And what did he do when you expressed faith in him? He believed you. And he exchanged your sinful life for his holy work. That's the part that he did for you and me. Okay, so now we're in part two of lesson two, assurance of salvation. So when we sum these scriptures up of the way of salvation, to simplify it even more than Pastor Angel did, is A, it says the redemption of Jesus plus your faith plus your repentance equals salvation. It doesn't have to be over complicated, but just because it's simple doesn't mean it is something cheap. He had to die. He suffered for us. He died for us. He shed his blood being completely innocent. So I asked this question on your sheet if you have it. Has God done what he wants to do, death and resurrection? Yes, he died.

So he did his part. Have you done what you need to do, which is believe and repent? If your answer is yes, then you're saved. Very simple. So the next question or the next statement is this, is since we are saved now, since we are not separated from Him, what does Jesus promise to those who follow Him? What promise does He give to us when we have faith and believe in Him? Well, we're going to read John 10, verse 28 for that answer. Back to what Jesus promised. What does Jesus promise to those who follow Him? Again, when we're filling in, we want you to fill the blank. I want you to take the scripture, read it down, and then fill that in. Fill in the answer with that scripture. What does it mean? And put your own words in it. Own it. Put some, how do you say, put your own stock into this and put some thought process. John 10, verse 28 says this, I give them eternal life and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand. This is Jesus talking. What is He talking about? After someone belongs to Him, Jesus was talking about ownership. He says, I give them eternal life. If you look at the Greek word eternal life, that Greek word eternal life means God's way of life. So God's life, He pours into you. When you believe, see, this is the misconception that sometimes a lot of the, we will misunderstand how this is presented. When you come to Christ, it's not just, oh, I understand here in your head and there's no actions to do with it.

No. When you come to Christ, there is a change. There is an internal change that takes place. Now if you fail to believe that, or you fail to walk that out, then either one of two things, either you didn't repent and you just maybe had some mental understanding and that was about as far as it went, or you did repent, but you haven't fully believed in the complete work of what Christ did that can change you. So this is where we, this is why this is really important. So again, what did Jesus say? He said, I give them eternal life and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand. God's way of life gets placed in you the moment that you confess, you believe, and you embrace the work of Jesus. That's his promise, that now you can overcome those things that you were not able to overcome. How? Because you're a good person? No. Because the power of the Spirit of God can now indwell you because you are a new creation. So now we're at number C. Eternal life does not only mean you will live forever. Life with God also means that we are able to live a life of holiness, of righteousness, of kindness, and of strength. We will forever receive the blessings of God. This is so important in the life of a believer. You know, if you were to ask a farmer and you were to ask him, and you're asking him this question in October, November, when he's plowing the field and turning the soil right before the rains come in December and January, right? He's getting it prepped. He's getting it ready up to a degree, and then it rains. And then the rains stop and he preps it again for what? Because he's going to plant seed.

And you ask the farmer, what are you doing? He says, oh, I have a field of asparagus. I have a field of tomatoes. I have a field of cucumbers. I have a field of lettuce. And you're going to look at him and you can go, you're crazy. You don't feel the dirt. It just looks really clean and nice. No, he does have a field. How does he have it? In seed form. He has it in seed form, but what still needs to come? The watering, time, and sun. Those three things. So, I'm going to repeat this again. Eternal life does not only mean that you will live forever, because reality is you're going to live forever wherever you go. Whether we decide to go to heaven or we decide to go to hell, we will live forever. We're living forever somewhere. The question is, what is the destination that we choose? So eternal life does not only mean you will live forever, but life with God also means holiness, righteousness, kindness, and strength. As Paul said it this way, you have peace, love, and joy in the Holy Ghost. You will receive these blessings of God forever. Why? Because it's by the Spirit of God that these seeds are inside of you and inside of me. I can't neglect that. So when I act up, I can't go to God as a born-again believer and go, God, you gave me eternal life, but you failed to give me patience. Or I get angry all the time and I go, well, you know, brother, I just, I'm always angry

all the time. God didn't give me patience. He gave me everything else, but he didn't give me patience. You and I cannot say God's a liar. We cannot say that God didn't give us the seed of all things. This is where we have to understand that as a born-again believer, it may be hard, may be difficult, and I'm not saying it's easy, but what I am saying is everything that pertains to life and godliness, he has placed inside of you through Christ in the new creation. And you have the ability by faith to believe his word and trust the Spirit. That if you can do that by trusting his word and the Spirit, that you will see those seeds that the farmer planted will begin to sprout and break ground. And when it breaks ground, guess what that farmer has? Two weeks ago, you would have called him crazy. Two weeks later, you see it breaking the ground. Twenty days later, you see an entire orchard that can feed thousands. Be patient, allow the Spirit to do his work, and understand the power that's inside of you and me by the Spirit of God when we die to our old self and embrace the new him. Another thing that's very important to add, I'm gonna go ahead and read D and expound on it, it says, believing in Christ not only means you have eternal life, but starting right now, you have a new life, letting you feel peace, happiness, and blessings at this very moment. You will also become one to bless others. Here at House of Rest, and we're doing this discipleship class, I think it's very important not to raise up Christians always looking forward to heaven and the future. It's not as if we are here on earth, so we're going to might as well accept the living hell and just can't wait to get to heaven. The fact is this, is that your eternal life begins the moment that the Spirit of God quickens your spirit. The kingdom of God is within you, that's what Jesus says. Our eternal life begins right now in this new life.

That's why the Lord's Prayer is so important, especially the portion where it says, let it be done on earth as it is in heaven. Is there sickness in heaven? No. Is there pain in heaven? No. Is there demon possessed or oppressed people in heaven? No. That's why the prayer is on earth as it is in heaven, because it begins now. This is really important. I know many of you, maybe you've been saved for a long time, but you're going through our discipleship class to partner with us at House of Rest, but some of you are hearing this for the first time. I don't want to start you wrong. I want your foundation in Christ to begin on solid ground, not on quicksand. This whole class is about you being assured of your salvation. Number three on the paper sheet, this is your response to this. So now after everything that we have shared with you up to this point, do you know you have been saved? My prayer is your answer is yes, I know. Do you know you have received eternal life? My prayer is through our description to you that your answer is yes, I do know I receive eternal life. So the conclusion, you've been saved. says here, I have been saved, or I have not been saved, or I still don't know. If you answered I have been saved, praise God. But if you answered that you're not, or you still don't know, this comes to a really important fork in the road here

as you're taking this discipleship class. Because we don't wanna be a church that teaches you about Jesus. We wanna be a church that introduces you to Jesus, the King, the Good Shepherd. We wanna make sure you know Him. So in part four, if anyone is in Christ, Pastor Angel is gonna share this scripture and follow along and make sure you fill in the blanks if you have the sheet so you can always have this forever for you. So now in part four, if anyone is in Christ, right below in the PDF document that you have, if you have, if you were able to get that printed out, it has the scriptures out there and we're gonna fill in the blanks. And so, again, we wanna give you the assurance because some of you guys, some of us walk in and we come to a church, or some of you that are watching this, or you've experienced this, maybe you've overcome this already, but maybe you're in the middle of this. We want you to know that when you come in, you give your life to Jesus, wherever you're at, whether you gave your life through this video in your car, watching it on your phone or your laptop, or in a church service, maybe you listened to this, you heard it, and then you acted in faith out at an altar in a church, or your bedroom,

wherever the case is at. But that when you walk, when you have that moment of peace with God, that some of you are gonna walk back into hostile environments. Some of you guys are gonna walk into situations that you're gonna say, I'm born again, and they don't believe you. Remember the story of the farmer that I said. You have to give time and patience. To what? To allow the seed to break ground, and then it still needs time to grow. They had asked Smith Wigglesworth this one time. They said, define faith. He said, stock, ear, corn. That's the definition of faith. Stock, ear, corn. Jesus used that same example. That's where Smith Wigglesworth used it from. What is that example? Everything starts with the stock. Then it grows into an ear, and that ear will develop corn. And when that corn is developed, you can eat. You can live. You can give it out. Some of you don't even have the stock yet. So when you go to your wife, or you go to your husband, or you go to your parents,

you go to, and you've lived a life that was reckless and sinful, like the first part, you were separate from God, and you come in, and you go, I'm saved. I went to church. I gave my life to Jesus. And there is no change yet because no time has happened. I wanna encourage you. I don't wanna discourage you. They're being honest with you by what they see. Let the stock develop. Let the ear grow so that corn can come out. Now, with that in mind, I wanna read 2 Corinthians 5 and 17. I'm reading out of the ESV. It says, therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. Now, I'm gonna include this in the first part of verse 18. All this is from God. I'm gonna restart it. I'm gonna reread it again. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. All this is from God. Why did I include the next verse? Because the Bible was never written with chapters and verses. Understand how important that last statement is connecting.

And it's this. When it says, therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the word new creation in the Greek literally means you can look it up. A type of species that has never existed before. See, when you go out and you go, I was born again, and they don't believe you, it's okay. They don't have to believe you yet. Give them time. But just know by faith, you have been recreated. into something that never existed before. You're a new you through Christ. That's the literal meaning of this. And then it says, the old has passed away. Behold, the new has come. All this is from God. The new creation, it didn't come from you. And you know what, if it didn't come from you, you can't mess it up. You can make mistakes. You can shipwreck your faith. And we can do, yeah, we can all decide to make bad choices. But here's the beauty of this. God did the new creation. God did the new covenant. The Father and the Son are in covenant with one another. It is our decision whether we are in agreement with Christ in that covenant. You're a new creation.

If you have believed, you've repented, you've believed, you've confessed, and now you're moving forward, you're a new creation in him. Stand steadfast in what he did in you. Ultimately, what we are saying is that if you are saved, if you answered yes, you will be changed. In the same way that Pastor Angel was saying, in the same way that Pastor Angel was explaining, it starts with a stock and an ear and then a corn. In the same way, you're gonna experience some of these changes. And I want you to check mark, if you have the PDF, those things that you have already felt change. And maybe in a few months, you bring this paper out again and say, you know what, I can add more check marks to these things. Some of them are gonna say, are you gonna check mark, do you have inner peace now? Or awareness of sin? Same things that you used to do, you had no problem doing it, all of a sudden you go hang out with some friends and all of a sudden you feel the brakes hit. Do you feel that? That's a good thing. Do you constantly feel God's love? I remember when I first got saved, I would read the scriptures and I felt like

as if the Bible was written just to me, like it was a love letter to me. And I would burst in tears when I would read the Holy Word. And that goes along with the next one, do you desire all of a sudden to read God's Word? Do you find yourself hungry to read His Word? Do you have a peace of having been forgiven? All that heavy weight is off of you now. Here's a good one. Do you have the ability to defeat sin? Things that used to stumble you up before, all of a sudden you feel like you have the ability to defeat it. The next one is an attitude of becoming better. Maybe before your days would start out gloomy, but now you wake up and you're like, thank you Lord for another day. And you have hope. And the last one, do you find yourself caring for others? These are good, I wanna say things to meter or to gauge your walk, because when you give your life to the Lord, you're gonna start to sense your heart is different, your mind is different, your thoughts are different. And this is a good gauge to learn from. As we go into the last few parts on the last page of the PDF, it's part number five, and I'm gonna have Pastor Angel read it, but it says, what if you sin again?

Because this is a good question to ask, because many of you, this is your first time giving your life to the Lord. This is all brand new to you. And you're thought like, what if I mess up? Am I still saved? Did I lose my salvation? And I'm gonna have Pastor Angel expound on that, Hebrews chapter six, verse four, eight, and Hebrews chapter 10, verse 26, and the scriptures that come along with that. So number five, if you sin again, are you still saved? And if that's your question, that's a great question, because we wanna be able to walk this throughout with you. So let's read, let's read with, whenever we're gonna answer a question, let's always go to the scriptures. We can have an opinion, that's okay. That's fine. But what does the scriptures have to say? Because ultimately that's gonna be our guide. It's gonna be our ruler. So I'm gonna read in Hebrews chapter six, verse four through eight. For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God, and the power of the age to come,

and then have fallen away. way to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm, and holding Him up to contempt. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near being cursed, and its end is to be burned. Man, that's pretty straightforward and harsh. So I'm going to just re-see this and we're going to jump over, we're going to continue on in Hebrews. I just want to re-read the first part. For it is impossible to those in case of those who have been once enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the Word of God, and the powers of the age to come, and them have falling away to restore them again to repentance. Okay, stay with me, don't go. We're going to go to Hebrews 10. Hebrews 10, chapter 10, verse 26. Same book. Very important to notice that, same book. For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins. Okay. I want to put this, why do we read that to you? Are we saying that if you are walking that tightrope and you fall one time or stumble off, you're going to burn in hell for all eternity? No, that's not what the writer of Hebrews is saying. I'm going to show you, we're going to prove this to you in other scriptures, but I want to give you the context of why we're reading this to you. Because we don't want you to come across this or somebody to come bring this up the first

time you make a mistake and go, see, you're not even a Christian, you're going to burn in hell. You might as well walk away, give up because there's no hope. Listen, you messed up, you're going to burn forever and ever. Now if you decide to live a habitual life of sin and walk away from the faith in Christ, yes, that could be your eternal state. But this is what the writer is saying, understand. What book did we read it out of? Hebrews. Why is that important? Whenever you're studying a Bible, who was it written to? As far as who were they writing to? That's an important question you have to ask. Who was he writing to? Hebrews. Why is that important? Because the Jews at that time, who were Hebrews at one time, were mixing Judaism and the now new faith in Christ. Why were they mixing it? Because of persecution, peer pressure, culture. So what was happening is they were giving way to pressure, hey, if you're not a Jew and you're not obeying the Sabbath and the synagogue, we're going to take your business away. Oh, no, no, no, I'm not a Christian, no. So that what they were privately doing is walking, they were privately being Christians, privately being Jews. And so the whole purpose of that whole text is this, what is he saying? If you think there's another route to salvation other than Christ, you crucify him afresh and there is no salvation for you. There's no other way other than Christ.

You can't add to the gospel of the kingdom. You can't add. It can't be Jesus plus something else. It can't be. If it's Jesus plus, the plus is a subtraction. That's the point that he wants to get to. Now we're going to jump in and Pastor David's going to describe the first John text that we're going to read. And I want to show you the whole picture that if you make a mistake, what is the heart of God towards you in those situations? This was to the Jews who were not wanting to separate from Judaism and wanting to hide their faith through their religion. If that's you, then repent. But if that's not, keep your ears open because we want to walk out with you what he's going to say in first John. John. So, I'm going to read 1 John 1, verse 9, and it says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So, we see it here, and I like the way Pastor Angel explains, and I'm going to have him explain now, because there's a difference between asking for forgiveness and constantly repenting. But according to the scriptures here, if we confess our sins, that he's faithful, does that mean that we can habitually sin? Just say, well, then I want more forgiveness from God than normal, than the average person, so I'm going to sin even more. Matter of fact, in some of Paul's letters, he says, absolutely not, because we cannot mock God. But according to the scripture, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. And I'm going to go ahead, and since I'm here, I'm going to read 1 John 1, 6-7, and it says this, If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. Before I read the next verse, I want you to understand this, right? Because if you go up to 100 people, if you go up to 10 people on an average street, maybe seven will say they're Christians. Maybe seven will say they follow Christ, but do they? There's something I always say behind the pulpit. I say, let your walk be louder than your talk, because Jesus says something

very compelling. He says, if you love me, you'll follow my commandments. So loving Jesus or following Jesus is more than showing up on Easter Sunday or putting a cross, a necklace with a cross on it. It's much more than that. It says, if we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we're liars. So we can't walk both. We can't walk on both sides. And the next verse says, but if we walk in that light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another. And the blood of Jesus, his son, cleanses us from all sin. So notice, it differentiates. If you're saying you're claiming Jesus, but you're walking in the darkness, then how can you be cleansed of those sins? So we have to keep those things in mind. And I'm going to have Pastor Angel explain the difference between asking for forgiveness and repenting. So asking for repentance and forgiveness. You know, one of these days, try this. Try running and have your right leg go right, and your left leg run left. What's going to happen? Nothing, because you're not going to go anywhere. Why? Because your right leg can't go one direction, and your left leg go the opposite direction, and you run in motion. No, you either have to go right, or you have to go left. Now, you can start right and then turn left. You can start left and then turn right. But you can't do both at the same time. See, this is the point. You can't live in darkness and in light. Why? Because you'll get stuck in the road. See, maybe some of you are coming into this class, and you're coming in, and you're listening to this message, and you're listening to this discipleship class, and you're going to get into some of the other courses. And some of the things that we may touch on and say may be very different or profound, and something different than maybe you've heard before. I hope it does. I hope it strikes your spirit and your mind new. But understand this. Repentance is not crying. You know, how do you know you repented? Well, I cried. Well, if that's the case, my four-year-old Ezra repents all day long. Why? Because he cries all day long. Is that repentance? Those of you that are parents, you tell me. Are your kids repenting because they're crying, or are they whining? Are they complaining? Crying is not repentance. It can be if it's with genuine faith and connected to action. If somebody repents at an altar, and then you go home, and you abuse your children and abuse your wife, and you go, well, this didn't work. I repented. No, you were sorry, but you didn't repent. Repentance means a change of ways, and what the Old Testament and the New Testament says, it's removing that heart of stone and putting in a heart of flesh.

So repentance is not emotional. It can be, and there are many times there is emotions connected with it. But repentance is a change in the course of the direction and the action and the life that you are living now. Again, you can't have your right leg run to the right and your left leg run to the left. And if you tried, you really wouldn't go anywhere. So we want to help you from the beginning so that you don't get stuck. That's the point. Don't get stuck. Repentance gives you the freedom to move forward. So if I repent, what's my next step? If you were a terrible father, you were a terrible mother, you were a terrible child, you were a terrible brother or a sister, repent, and then do what? Give it time, grow, and don't just go to the person you offended and go, hey, I'm a new creation now. Forgive me. Why? Because I was a jerk then. And then they say, well, I don't know. I don't know if you've changed yet. Dude, the Bible says I changed. You got to forgive me. No, repentance, that's not repentance. Repentance is giving you the opportunity to allow the seed, remember the farmer, allowing the seed to take root, to grow fruit in your life. That's how you know. You first receive it by a seed, embrace it with hope. God, I thank you. And I'm going to walk this out and water it with the word every day. I'm going to water it in prayer every day.

I'm going to do good deeds. Why? Because I'm saved by works? No, it's not about you have to do things. I get to do things now. I get to be kind and express love and have grace. Because through true biblical repentance, it will kill the old you. So you can now live in the new you. See Hebrews was talking about a people that were mixed and their right leg was trying to run and their left leg was trying to run and they were stuck. There's no salvation for them that are stuck. What did first John touch? See if you're sincere, you can't walk the fence. You have to choose. Choose you this day whom you will serve. What does that choice require? An action. What is the action? Fruitful living towards holiness, righteousness by his word. And remember that checklist that Pastor David read earlier? Are these things happening in your life? That's a good indication to see if repentance has grown rude in you. You go, well, maybe I only checked off three out of the nine. That's okay. Continue to work at it. Go back and get that checklist and look at it in 30 days, 60 days, 90 days. Let repentance grow roots in your life and allow the new creation to take place through you so you can honestly be able to see true repentance.
