Amen. Amen. The North Place.
It doesn't start with a meeting, or a cult, or a sermon, or a team of praise. The Bible starts with God working. Are you with me so far? So, today we're going to go through four scenes, I say four scenes, of biblical history. We're going to start in a garden, then we're going to talk about thorns, then we're going to talk about a city, and we're going to talk about the altar, and then about the city. In those four scenes, vamos a descubrir lo que Dios piensa
The Bible connects categories that we have separated. We separate worship for Sunday and work for Monday to Friday. The Bible unifies those three categories and says work, service, and worship. When they are done for God, they are the same thing. Your worship doesn't end when the lights go out
in this sanctuary. It continues when you do your work in front of God. You know that one of the first people in Scripture that God fills with His Holy Spirit, He fills it to perform the function of His work. In Exodus chapter 31, you see the story of Bethsalel. And it says that Bethsalel was filled with the Holy Spirit. But if you look, it says, and I have filled it with the Spirit of God, of wisdom, intelligence, and creative ability, to do artistic work in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut and cast precious stones, to be carved in wood, and to perform all kinds of handicrafts. Bethsalel was not filled with the Holy Spirit only to speak. He was filled with the Spirit to create. He was filled with the Spirit to do His work with excellence. The Holy Spirit not only fills with pulpits, but also fills with hands, fills with ideas, fills with decisions. The Holy Spirit fills with design, fills with conversations, and fills with solutions. You know that God can give you wisdom to lead a meeting. You know that God can give you patience to teach a complicated and difficult child in this new year of classes.
You know that God can give you creativity to solve a problem that seems impossible to solve and no one has been able to solve in the company. You know that God can give you discernment to treat a client, and self-dominance to respond to someone when you lack respect in the workplace. Going back to Genesis, it also teaches that work has limits. Say limits. Limits. If you realize, God worked six days and rested the seventh day, not because He was tired, but to show us, to show us healthy work and rest rhythms. It says, when the seventh day came, in chapter two, God rested because He had finished all the work that He had undertaken. Rest declares, when we rest, I am not God and the world can continue while I sleep. This is not a condemnation for anyone who is working two jobs right now to support their home. The reality is that God sees your effort,
but even in these difficult times, we must remember that our limits are a physical reality and not a spiritual failure. There are people who, to show courage, do not know how to stop their work because they have found identity and dignity in their work. If we can never stop, listen to this well, work has ceased to be a call, a vocation, and it may have become your master. That's the first part of the garden. The second was the thorns. Sin did not create work, but it distorted it. Like the impact of sin in all areas of the world and humanity, sin impacted the workplace and work relationships, perhaps in greater proportion than in any other area. Genesis 3, 18 to 19 says, the earth will produce, notice that there was no flesh or thorns up to that point. After the fall, it says, the earth will produce flesh and thorns, but it says,
and you will gain the bread with the sweat of your forehead. In other words, you speak fruit, but there will be thorns. Your work and your effort will produce, but not without flesh and without thorns. The work remains, but frustration begins to appear as a product of the entrance of sin. That's why you can do everything correctly and it will never end as you expected it to end. The work will never come out in the perfection that you thought, designed and proposed. You can work hard and not be recognized. You can take care of people who don't thank you. That's why when we talk about flesh and thorns in the workplace, you can have an unfair boss, a difficult partner or an impossible client. Carlos and Spina, don't say it out loud, but when you have a clear definition of work before and after the fall, and you have a biblical perspective, you can enter your workplace and not fall, or lose motivation, or crumble
when these things happen, because you say, Carlos and Spina, but I'm going to eat those fruits too. You can study for years and end up working in something you never imagined. In fact, maybe in your country you were a respected professional and when you got here, you had to start from scratch because your title was not recognized when you arrived in the United States. You can love what you do and still end up exhausted. The reality is that in this world, honest work will bear fruit, but no work is completely free of thorns. The problem is that when we don't have a correct perspective, we fall, we crumble in front of the thorns and we tend to fall into one of these two extremes. The first, we despise work. I only work because I have to pay bills. My real life begins on Friday when I put that card or leave my job. That's where my happiness begins. Meanwhile, it's something I have to resist. Distorted vision of work. I believe in God's work because it gives us dignity and contributes to our development. But what do others do? I love my job so much that I completely neglect my family. I am what I achieve. I am worth what I earn.
And if I succeed, then I am someone. And if I fail, I am no one. When work is just a burden, listen to this, we lose purpose. We lose God's purpose in our lives. And when work becomes our identity, we lose our soul. Work is a terrible savior. Work will never fulfill the promises that the world will give us. Because work always asks for more. Say more. Work always asks for more. It asks for another achievement. It asks for another contract. It asks for another recognition. It asks for another promotion. And it will never tell you, you are enough. That's why the other side of this coin is, the Gospel not only changes where you will spend eternity. The Gospel changes from where we live and from where we work today. From where we work. What am I saying with that? In Christ, we no longer work to get an identity. We work from an identity already given and given, from an identity already received
in Christ Jesus. Before Jesus began his public ministry, what did the Father say about Jesus? This is my beloved Son, in whom I am 100% compassionate. He had not done anything yet because the blessing of the Father upon you and upon your identity and upon your dignity is that it is not earned or deserved. It is granted as a result of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. In fact, Jesus worked from the love of the Father not to earn the love of the Father. And you can also do it. Think about this. Your boss can evaluate your performance but he cannot determine your value. I leave it there for you to sit down. Why? Because it devalues a bad evaluation. When a bad evaluation about your performance devalues you, it is because I have put too much weight on it. I have given too much value to my identity connected to my performance. A company can eliminate your position but it cannot cancel your call. It can fire you but it cannot undo you.
A client can reject your proposal but it cannot take away your identity. Your salary simply describes a compensation. It does not describe your dignity. Are you with me until today? I will equip you to launch you tomorrow. There is an image of the Gospel in Genesis 3 that seemed powerful to me while I was preparing for this weekend. If you remember, Genesis 3 said the curse produced thorns and thorns.
I'm writing this letter to people who were in less than ideal working conditions. Less than ideal. And in essence, Pablo, what I was telling them is, the human being that is above you is not the ultimate authority over your life. Your boss is not the ultimate authority over your life. Christ is your true Lord.
And you work for Him. And when you work for Him, even a task that others may belittle, can become an offering in front of God. Your retirement, an offering in front of God. Being a housewife, an offering in front of God. That means that you can have a difficult and complicated boss, and still work for Christ. You can feel that no one recognizes you in your work, and yet you know that everyone who sees you, sees your work. And admires your work. And tells you, you are my beloved daughter in whom I am pleased. You are my beloved son, and therefore I do not need recognition. Pablo was neither romanticizing injustice, nor authorizing bosses to exploit or mistreat. So if you have your own business, listen to me, because Pablo also spoke to the bosses in chapter 4, verse 1. He says, You masters, business owners, businessmen, bosses, provide your slaves, in our time, your employees, what is just and equitable, aware that you also have a master in heaven. What does Pablo do? Pablo dignifies the worker, but also responsabilizes the boss. The Gospel is incredible. In fact, it transforms both the way of working, and the way of directing. It is important that we know that not all work is worship.
You say, no, my martyrdom is nothing more than worship. That does not work like that. Because you have a bad boss, that does not work like that. Or because the business is not good. No, you have to give it to him as an offering of gracious smell. Lord, I give you this school year. I give you as a teacher, as a teacher, as a student. I give you my employees, my company, my business, my work team, my boss, my boss. Work becomes worship when we present it to God. When we do it according to the character of God. And when through Him we seek to serve our neighbor. The worship of Sunday says, Lord, you are worthy. We sing it almost every Sunday. The worship of Monday shows, Lord, you are also worthy of the way I work. That is why our worship cannot be intense here, and careless at work. In fact, the best employees, the best supervisors, the best businessmen should be the Christians. Why? Because they do it for God. Presenting myself to my work should be my letter of presentation before my field of evangelization. How do I do my work? It should speak better of me than how I speak with my lips. True worship integrates your whole life. Jesus does not want to be the Lord of your song. He wants to be the Lord of our vocation, our decisions, our work ethics,
when no one is looking at us and our work. What am I saying with that? The worship of Sunday shapes us for the mission of Monday. The worship, the meeting of Sunday prepares us for the mission of Monday. The Gospel transforms the mission. The Gospel transforms the place, and how I see my place of work as a believer. I cannot let culture determine how I look at my company, my team, my people, the place where I work. In fact, most of the people in my voice will not spend most of the days of this week in a church. Where will you spend most of your days? In projects, in construction, in companies, in hospitals, in classrooms, in beauty salons, cutting lawns, pruning patios, carrying out care initiatives for children, for relatives, or for children of others. And this is important. In your place of work, that is your ministry field. Now, you don't have to turn every conversation into a sermon. You don't have to speak in a particular religious way, neither exotic nor strange, to be called a Christian. The way of knowing who you are, that you're a Christian shouldn't be. The way you necessarily speak, your first testimony, do you know what it is? You arrive first than anyone and leave after no one. You arrive on time. And you do what you said you were going to do.
You keep your word. You admit when you make a mistake, which is human, it's rare, and you're the first one to say, you know what, I know I made a mistake. It's not about who I blame. Or not, but they're covering that one who's the favorite of the favorites. It's about not participating in gossip, no matter how good or tasty it is. It's about treating with dignity those who others ignore at work. Why? Because the well-done work of a boss, of a believer, is already the main way to love your neighbor. And when the opportunity comes to speak, which is going to happen, then your words are going to sustain your faith, your glorious hope in Christ Jesus. And why do you react differently than everyone else does? When the Holy Spirit urges you to work, and now your character, your competence, that is, your sense of skill, your capacity, and your compassion, what happens? Work becomes an expression of the kingdom of heaven.
In fact, we must, Mirasloff Boeuf, a great writer in this area, wrote a book called Work in the Spirit. How to work in the Spirit. And he says, he proposes that the Christian understand his work as cooperation with God, in the power of the Holy Spirit, participating both in the development of creation and in its renovation. What does that mean? That the Holy Spirit wants to accompany you from Monday to Saturday. It means that before you open the business, you must pray to the Holy Spirit, give me wisdom and give me direction. That before you open your business and establish the strategy for the year 2027, you are already thinking, Lord, how a segment of the market that I serve must be aimed at improving the living conditions of a segment of society that is at a disadvantage. How do I build it? How do I create it? How do I establish beauty? How do I bless with a broader sense of justice what every other business does? Are you with me up to this point?
Before entering the meeting, I say, Lord, help me speak with truth and grace. You know my tendencies, you know my fears, and you know how I'm going to react naturally. But Holy Spirit, help me speak with truth. Help me speak with grace and help me spread that truth with love. Before responding to this text or this email or this post on social media, govern my emotions and my tongue, Holy Spirit. Are you with me up to this point? Before attending to that person, you know it's difficult and complicated. Say, Lord, let me see her as someone created in your image. Because that person carries your image. She was created in your image and in your likeness. And before making any decision, say, Lord, don't let money be my only criterion. Before taking that step, before taking that next step, before taking that initiative, say, Lord, let money not be my only motivation or my only criterion. What do you want to do through me? What is your purpose of kingdom? How can I give you an advance? That should be our function and our work. Giving an advance of the kingdom, your place of work, is not a secular space
where God waits and waits for you outside and says, here I wait for you when you come out. No, Christ, the Lord, is also there. In fact, I told you a moment ago, the Bible begins in a garden of undevelopment. The Garden of Eden, yes or no? And how does the book of Revelation end? What began in a garden ends in a city, in a city full of the presence of God. What am I saying with that? God does not abandon, nor did He abandon, nor will He abandon His creation. He redeems it and takes it to His purpose. Does the word of God end with what? With the New Jerusalem, what began in a garden ends in the New Jerusalem, the city. Our work can anticipate the coming kingdom. What does Revelation 21 say? One to five. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. In other words, everything that sin had corrupted, destroyed and worn out, ceased to exist, the corrupt. But I also saw the holy city. to the New Jerusalem that came down from where? From heaven, you can see it on the screen, I think, yes or no? I heard a powerful voice that came from the throne and said, Here among human beings is the sanctuary of God. He will dwell among them, and they will be his people,
and God himself will be with them, and he will be their God. The one who was sitting on the throne said, I make new all things. Not just people, all things. All things. I make new all things. Christian hope is not that God abandons his creation. He does not abandon his creation. He restores, redeems, and transforms his creation. He did not say, no, what a mistake, I'm going to erase this now. No, no. He sent his son, Jesus, so that all who believe in him may have eternal life. Because in such a way he loved God. The world says in Spanish, the Greek says, the cosmos. It implies beyond our world. He came to bring restoration. And here, then, is that you connect the goodness of the original creation with the continuity, say continuity, of the new creation. These are not segments and pieces apart. What began in Genesis in the garden ends in the new Jerusalem, the great city that descended from heaven. Why? Because God's purpose is to live among his people. And so that that gap that sin brought may be broken, and God's plan from the beginning had continuity, he sends his son, Jesus Christ, hung on a cross, forgives our sins,
and renews and transforms all things. The Bible doesn't give us all the details about the work in eternity. I always ask myself, what will the shepherds do in eternity? Because everyone has a job except us. So I'm trying to find another job for eternity. Why? Well, I say, they're going to have Jesus. Imagine, the shepherd of shepherds. The shepherd of shepherds. So if you have a suggestion, let me know. And we're not going to go beyond what the Bible says, but the Bible does show us, in the book of Revelation, a restored humanity, a city. The Bible shows us nations. The Bible shows us beauty. The Bible shows us culture. It shows us work. It shows us service. Activity without the curse of sin. When Christ, the Son of God, removes the curse of sin, when Christ renews all things, human development, aligned with God's purpose, will not be discarded. It will be purified, perfected, and renewed. That's why Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, 58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, remain strong and constant. Work always for the Lord with enthusiasm,
because you know that nothing you do for the Lord is useless. This is important because Paul, although he is specifically talking about giving ourselves to the work of the Lord, in the original context, the principle comes from a truth that is much broader, because you know that nothing we do is in vain, nothing done in obedience to Him lacks meaning. What am I saying with that? Of course, everything we do will not last. Selfish ambition will not last. Exploitation will not last. Deceit will not last. And that which dehumanizes, that does not belong to the kingdom of heaven. But no work done in Christ for love, in truth, and for the good of others, is wasted. I have to understand that well, because there are people who have a bad theology of work and say, no, if one day we are going to go and they think they are going to be elevated to I don't know where, and they are going to get there, and there they are going to be
with the little angels playing a harp for the rest of eternity. That is not what the Christian, Orthodox faith teaches, nor any biblical theology. It says, what began in a garden will end in a new Jerusalem, in a new city. And in a city there are always projects, and there is work, and there is development, and there is a lot to do. But listen to this, the church, today, the people of God, the people of Israel in the Old Testament, one of God's goals is that they are an anticipation of the coming kingdom. Do you understand that? It means, I am an anticipation of what the coming kingdom will be as a believer. That is why the Lord said to him, the world turned it upside down. He said, what? The coins of a widow are worth more than all the riches. But as well...
It's difficult, the narrow path, but He walks. He takes us to walk with Him. Every time you protect someone's dignity, you're giving an advance for the kingdom. Listen to this well. Every time you repair something broken, you're giving an advance for the kingdom. Every time you practice justice, generosity, and truth, you're giving an advance for the kingdom. When Christ comes and does all the new things, that's how they're going to work. And you're giving an advance because you're a new creature with new purposes. And we're already citizens of the kingdom of heaven and we live according, not to the laws of here, but to the laws of heaven. Although we expect the future consumption of the kingdom, the church is called to face advance of that coming reality. What am I saying with that? Let tomorrow, Monday, your work becomes a small advance for the kingdom. And the question is, at the end of the day, did my work have more characteristics than Carlos and Spina or was my work an advance for the kingdom? Maybe you got here today tired of your work and you didn't want me to talk to you about work. But God knows exactly what we need and maybe He wanted to bring you a little bit of His kingdom for His purposes and give clarity where there is no clarity.
Or maybe you got frustrated because they fired you from your job and you don't understand why they fired you and not someone else. Or you've been looking for a job for a long time and you don't know why you haven't gotten it. Or maybe you know that God has called you to leave the place where you are, but no matter how difficult it is, you're comfortable there and you don't want to face the uncertainty of where you have to go. And you know that God is telling you, Abraham, get out of your land and your family, get out of what is comfortable, because I have more things for you. Or maybe you're here today at the reach of my voice and your work has become your God and your family lives in abundance. When you get exhausted, tired and without an ounce of energy to be able to invest in marriage or in children or in the family or in the plan that God has for you, there are many different ways to express the thorns and thorns in this fallen world. Many, many opportunities are created, especially among believers. And if we're not careful, especially among us Latinos who came to this country for a better life. But God says a better life is not money. Money is important to live, to maintain stability, but there is much more beyond.
And God says, I didn't bring you here for the money, I brought you to give you life and life in abundance. And what you thought was going to elevate you, I'm going to use it to transform you and truly elevate your dignity and give you a purpose of anticipation of the kingdom. The Gospel releases your work so that it becomes your identity and turns it into worship and service to Him. Adoration and service to Him for the well-being of others. I want you to be where you are. Let's take a moment of reflection before doing anything else. I want you to extend your hands in front of you. And now I want you to turn them to the Lord and look at your hands, look at your hands. These are the hands that build, that educate, that cook, that prepare, that lift, that build. These are the hands that carry, that take care. These are the hands that heal, that sustain. I want you to look at your hands. They sustain your family, these are your hands. So open in front of God. And say, Lord, today I give you my work as an offering. I give you my work, my life. May these hands become an altar to lift up and exalt your name, to do work with excellence. To not allow my hands and my work to become my dignity, but that you become my sustenance. I want us to put this prayer on the screen
and do it together in a loud voice with our hands like this, as if to receive and deliver and receive. Let's do this prayer together, and if you dare to do it in a loud voice, I want you to do it with me. Lord Jesus, this work is not my identity. You are my identity. This work...
