Hey friends, how's everybody doing? It's good to have you at church today. And let me piggyback on that for a moment. We are four weekends away from Easter, and that means that we have a great opportunity to invite our friends and family to experience Easter with us. And so I wanna encourage you, be thinking now, be praying now about who you can invite, and invite early and invite often, all right? So actually say, hey, listen, I'll bring you. You can sit with me. We have all kinds of services throughout the weekend that you can choose from. And also on your way out the door at all of our locations, we have these little invite cards. So take a stack of these with you. Put them in your pocket, put it in your purse. When you go to the gym, when you go to like get your coffee, when you go to your neighbor or whatever else, you can give it to that person and invite them to come. And that weekend, we believe there are gonna be literally thousands and thousands of people that are gonna be visiting with us for the very first time. I know the parking lot is gonna be packed, but we want heaven to be packed, all right? So we're okay with that. And it is going to be a life-changing weekend. So take a bunch of these with you,

and let's just believe that God is gonna do great things, because I know He will. He does every single year. Well, we are in a series called Didn't See It Coming, A Skeptic's Guide to Living Like Jesus. We're talking about the book of James, which is in the New Testament. And actually that book originally was a letter. It was written to believers all throughout the Roman Empire. And it was written by a guy by the name of James, which is why we call it James. James was the half-brother of Jesus. Some of you maybe are here for the first time. You're like, whoa, wait a minute, Jesus had a half-brother? Yes, He did. Actually, go back to the beginning of this series on February, I believe it was 15th, and I explain all that. I don't have time to explain it now. But James grew up with Jesus, but did not believe Jesus was who He said He was, any more than you would believe if your brother came to you and said, I'm God, right? And so James was like, no way. He was a skeptic. But yet, when Jesus went to the cross and died and came back to life, James was like, whoa, He really is God.

He went from being ultra-skeptical to being an all-in follower of Jesus, even to the point in 62 AD that he was willing to be martyred for his faith, that James was like, I will not recant, I will not renounce Jesus. He is the Son of God. So we've been studying this month, what makes somebody do that? What makes somebody go from skeptic to follower? And maybe we should look at his letter and what he has to say about spiritual wisdom with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, because, man, you know what? He is all-in, and so that's what we've been talking about. And so we're in the last week of the series today, and I've entitled my message, Run, Devil, Run. Run, Devil, Run. I mean, I'll make sense of that in a moment. It's gonna be a good morning, all right? Many years ago, actually in the early 2000s, I've told this story before, some of you have heard it, but I took a group of young adults from our leadership college to China on a missions trip. And we landed in China, in Beijing, and our work was with a underground Christian organization there that was helping the underground church. China is a communist nation, and especially back then, Christianity was not necessarily legal.

You could not worship legally. In fact, you would be thrown in jail or ostracized or whatever. And so we were going in covert, and we were using a methodology that doesn't really work in America, but it worked over there, and that is that we would bring tracts. And tracts are little paper pamphlets that maybe explain who Jesus is and salvation and things like that. In America, they've done studies on this. Tracts have a less than 0.05% effectiveness. But over in China, where they never heard about Jesus, most of them, there's over a billion people that live there. They hadn't heard about Jesus, most of them, and so they're reading things for the very first time, and they found out that tracts were very effective. So we smuggled in thousands of tracts into China. And when we arrived, the first night. We went to a hotel and I actually met a pastor of the underground Christian church in China. And he only stayed for five minutes because he didn't wanna be in a public place because the communist police were after him because he ran a church. And so we met in this lobby area and he cried because he met for the first time in his life an American Christian.

And he was so honored by that. And through a translator, I told him, I go, no, no, no, no, no, you don't understand. This needs to be reversed. I am so honored to be in the presence of a spiritual hero like you because I can go to Walmart and buy a necklace with a cross on it any day of the week, but you, you have to go underground and you're building a church covertly and it is exploding like many people were getting saved, but you are threatened with jail or persecution or being ostracized. And I'm bawling and he's bawling and we're hugging and I'm just like, oh my goodness, this is crazy. And then the next day, we broke the team into groups of three. I took two college students with me. We went deep into the Hunan province. We went to these towns. Now they call them towns. We would call them cities because they'd have 100,000 people in them. I mean, big buildings, everything. One thing that they would do back then, I don't know if they still do or not, but back then in these backwood towns or cities, at nine o'clock, the communist government would shut off the electricity. So they'd turn off the electricity,

only keep the street lights on. Everybody was kind of forced to go home because the electricity was off. Everybody goes to bed. And so what we would do is in the middle of the night, myself and the other students and all the teams throughout the Hunan province, we would go into these cities at night when everybody's sleeping. It was apocalyptic. There wasn't a car driving. There's no one on the street. It was desolate. And we would go around and we'd place little tracks on bicycles and little ledges of walls and at bus stops and everything. So in the morning when people would wake up, they would see these tracks and they'd read them and they would learn that Jesus loves them and died for them and they can be saved. Now the key was this. We had to catch the first bus out of town in the morning. Otherwise, the cops, the police, would come, they'd find us. And one thing, you probably know this, but you don't wanna go to a Chinese prison because you will be forgotten. So we got on a bus every morning and we would drive on that bus. We'd ride on the bus like six hours to another town

way far away. We'd sleep all day, get up at night, do the same thing. We did this for like two, two and a half weeks. Kayden, my oldest, was six weeks old when I took this team. Jen and I had no communication for three weeks. She had no idea where I was. There was no way that I could be able to call home because we were so covert and undercover. And so one night something happened that had never happened before in any of the other cities. And that is that we're passing out these tracks, putting them places like two in the morning, three in the morning, and all of a sudden I look down the road and we're in this downtown area and there are headlights and they're coming at us. And it ended up being a van. And I mean, I'm like, oh my goodness, because we literally for night after night after night, nobody's on the street. This van pulls up and we're in the middle of a city block. There's like a building to our back and then like the corners are way far away. There's no way we could run and hide or anything. So we just froze. We just stood there with bags of tracks. Like, I mean, we are, if we're caught, we are guilty, guilty, guilty, right? And this van pulls up, slows down, and then turns and shines its headlights directly at us

and drives at us and pins us up against the building. And at this point, the two college students were like, Pastor Jeremy, what are we gonna do? And I'm thinking in my mind, I'm like, I have no idea what to do right now. Like we are caught. And so all of a sudden, the Holy Spirit put something in my heart. I had this idea and it was two things. Number one, I had this strong sense, don't talk in English. Like don't talk in English because. is you don't wanna identify yourself as an American because that is gonna be even double bad. Does that make sense? And then the second thing was this. I felt like as they are getting out of the van, these guys are getting out and they're coming at me and they are talking in Chinese. I don't know what they're saying, but they're being aggressive. You could tell in their tone. I felt that I was supposed to shout back at them in my heavenly language. Now, if you don't know what that is, read Acts chapter two, that's a different sermon. I don't have time to talk about it right now. But I just started to do that. I literally just started to talk back at them in my heavenly language and they froze

and they didn't know what to do and I grabbed the students by the back of their collars, literally, and I just kept talking at those guys and I just kept saying it and I'm walking like this with the students and we're going towards the corner. We get to the corner and I'm like, run! And we just run. And I mean, we ran and ran and ran. And at one point, one of the students was like, out of breath and he's like, are we far enough? I'm like, no, just keep running, keep running, keep running. And we went and hid. We went and hid in some back alley somewhere for like an hour and didn't come out. This is the one thing I learned from that experience and that is this, is that when you are in danger, you run different. This isn't like you put on your Lululemon track jacket and you're like, oh, I'm just gonna go. No, no, no. I mean, you run, right? You know, we ran. And today, what I want to talk about is I want to talk about what makes the devil run. Now, it's not what you think because here's the thing, let me just say this. We, in our own humanness and in our own strength, we don't scare the devil.

It's only God in us and the power of heaven in us that makes the devil shake in his boots. It is not us, it is God. So let me just say that from the get-go. If you've been reading the book of James, like we had a little reading plan that we started this month and you could read along with and as we've been talking on weekends and you might've noticed this, James tells it like it is. Like, I mean, he's not very politically correct. He would be definitely canceled in today's culture. I mean, he is saying things just straight and today is no exception. In fact, I'm gonna read what he says and James, who was ultra skeptic and now a passionate believer in Jesus, writes this in chapter four, verse seven through 10. He says, so humble yourselves before God, resist the devil and he will, what's that word? Flee, he'll flee from you, he'll run. Come close to God and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, James says, excuse me. He's shooting straight. Purify your hearts for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter and gloom instead of joy.

Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up in honor. Run, devil, run. That's what we're gonna talk about today. Now, the enemy is always gonna try to mess with your life. James is not saying that you resist the devil once and he goes away for a lifetime. That's not true. Anybody that's walked with Jesus for more than a millisecond will tell you that the enemy circles back around time and time again. But today what James is trying to say is he's trying to say this, you and I must have a posture that invites a power that creates the enemy to fear what God is doing, okay? So he starts out with this idea, submit to God. This is what James says, submit to God. Humble yourselves before God. The word submit means to place yourself under another's authority. Now, we don't like this as Americans because we wanna be our own authority. Like we wanna be in charge, right? But God is saying, no, no, no, no, here's the thing. Through James, he's saying, submit yourself to his authority. Pride says, I'm in control. Humility says, God is really in control. Many of us, we have a control problem. We have a control problem.

Every once in a while, when I have to drop my truck off for service or maybe I'm coming. coming back from the airport or whatever, Jen will come and pick me up in her SUV. And she's driving and I'll get into the passenger side and we start driving and I drive her crazy. It's just something inside of me. I wanna be in the driver's seat and she's in the driver's seat and so I'll be driving and I'm being nice and I'm thinking to myself, I'm thinking, why are we going so slow? And sometimes they'll be like, why did you turn here? We should go here or why are you following that car so closely? And I started kind of bugging her and finally she'll look at me and she'll go, honey, and that's when I know I'm in trouble. It's that or honey, it's like that, honey. I say it, I mean like, get a little, honey. She'll look at me and she'll be like, this isn't my car, this is my car. And I'll be like, this isn't my first rodeo. I've been driving since I was 16. And I'm like, you're right, you're right. It's me, I'm the problem, it's me. Why? I got a control problem. And that's the way it is many times with God.

We're like, God, I want you to be the leader and the forgiver of my life. I want you to be the Lord and Savior. Lord means ultimate ruler. Leader means he's in charge. We submit to his leadership. So in essence, he's like in the driver's seat of our life. And you know what we do? We sit in the passenger seat and we're like going, God, why did we turn here? God, where are you taking me? I don't wanna go here. God, can you go a little faster? God rarely rushes you, he most of the time makes you wait. And all of a sudden, that whole like control thing starts bubbling up inside of us. But here's what I want you to know. And that is this, God's a better driver than you. When it comes to your life, he knows what he's doing. And we're in the passenger seat many times and we're like whining and complaining and wishing and saying this and giving God direction. Think about that, giving God direction. Overcoming in life begins where your pride ends. Where your pride ends, that's where you become an overcomer. But as long as you say, no, I'm in control, I'm in control, you're not an overcomer yet. So James knows this and he's like this. Okay, so then what you do is you gotta be humble

and you gotta resist the devil and resist the devil and resist the devil and he will flee from you. So once you humble yourself, then God gives you the ability and the authority to be able to stand against the enemy's influence. But what does it mean to really resist the devil? What does that mean? It means this, with the Holy Spirit's help, you don't give into temptation. Now, none of us are 10 for 10 on this, okay? None of us are scoring 100%. We always will struggle with this, but little by little, the more that you walk with God, he gives you more power along with our choice. It requires our choice, okay, to not give into temptation. Now, temptation is not a sin. Some people think being tempted is a sin. It's not, because if it was a sin, then Jesus would have sinned in the wilderness. He was tempted for 40 days and 40 nights. He did not sin. So temptation is not a sin. It's only a sin when you give into the temptation. The Apostle Paul, who wrote the majority of the letters in the New Testament, he says it this way. He says, like in 1 Corinthians 6, flee sexual immorality. He's talking to the Corinthian church, and the Corinthian church was kind of in the Vegas of its day, and he's like, hey, listen, you need to flee or run from sexual immorality.

He also says in 1 Corinthians 10, he's like, hey, flee idolatry. Now, some of you are like, it's 2026. I don't have an idol in my corner of my living room or whatever else. No, no, no, you may not have a physical idol, but all of us are tempted to worship something. Maybe it's money, maybe it's success, maybe it's a vice, maybe it's ourselves. In fact, I would tell you, the show American Idol is ironic, right? Because I will tell you, Americans, the idol is us. We worship me, you know? We don't need a statue, we have us. And so Paul's going, don't give into idolatry. He says, flee it. Second, Timothy, flee youthful desires. Timothy was a young pastor and he's like, hey, listen, what you were tempted and what you did in your youth, flee that, flee, flee, flee. Now the Greek word for flee, it means this. It means to run away, escape quickly, avoid danger immediately. Think of my China story. That's what it means. Run for your life, all right? James then comes along and he says this, resist the devil and he will what? Flee. That word flee that James uses

is the exact same Greek root word as what Paul is using when Paul is saying flee immorality, flee sexual sin, flee youthful lust. He's saying run from it, like in China, run for your life. And then James comes along and says, when you resist the devil, he will flee. It's the same word. He will run for his life, run devil run. See, here's the thing. When we flee, when we flee sin, the devil flees us. Why? Because God's power starts working in us and the enemy can't hold a candle to the power of heaven. And so therefore he runs. Now, trust me, he'll circle back around and he'll try to come at you another way. He does it all the time. But the more that we resist, the more the enemy flees. But here's the problem. You can't expect God to remove what you keep on welcoming. So if we don't resist, we can't complain when we give into temptation and then we face the consequences. You can't cast out the enemy you keep on entertaining. It's not a power problem. The God that we serve has plenty of power that he wants to give us. It's not a power problem. It's a passivity problem.

We're passive about temptation. You and I both, all of us are. We tend to kind of let down our guard and we kind of like, instead of resisting the enemy, we kind of let them into our living room of our life and be like, well, you know, you just stay over there and I'll kind of be over here in the kitchen. No, no, no. James is saying, can't do that. So what does James instruct us to do? He says this, draw near to God and wash your hands. Now he's not talking about physically washing your hands. This is a metaphor, but draw near to God. In fact, he says it this way, come close to God and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, James says, purify your hearts and your loyalty. The problem is, it's that your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Now, this promise that James is giving us is pretty amazing. The God who says, if you search for me, I will be found. God is not trying to play hide and seek with you. Kind of reminds me of when my two oldest boys were a little younger and I'm talking like real young, like real young, like barely talking. And I'd come home from work and they'd want to play hide and seek. And so I'm kind of competitive and you know what? I wanted to like really, really hide. But they're young and I'm like, I can't do that.

Like I could have like taken the trap door and gone up in the attic. They wouldn't have found me for days, you know? But that's no fun. So what would I do? I would literally go and I would stand in the corner of the next room. You know, they count one, two, three, four. And I would go into the corner and I'd take a blanket and I'd stand in the corner and I'd put it over me like a ghost. I'd just stand there. And then all of a sudden they would like run around and they'd be like, found you. And I'd take the blanket off and I'd be like, how did you do that? I was easy to find. God is the same way. You have to initiate the search. But once you do, he's easy to find. He's easy to find in his word. He's easy to find in your heart. He speaks to us all. See, here's a problem. It's not that God doesn't speak. It's just that we don't many times listen. We don't hear. We're too consumed. We're preoccupied. And so he comes close.

As we say, God, I want you close, he comes. close, whether you feel him or not. It's not about a goose bump. It's not about the feelings. It's about the fact that he is there. And then when he comes close, guess what? He begins to help us to cleanse our heart. Really, he does the cleansing and we just allow it. Wash your hands, what does that mean? That points to behavior. In other words, looking at God and saying, God, I wanna be more like Jesus in my attitude, in my actions, in my motivation, in how I treat others. Help me to be more like Jesus. Here's the $10 Bible word for this, sanctification. It's a process, it's different than salvation. Salvation, boom, you pray, God saves you. But then you go on up into a process. And that process, by the way, will last your entire life. It doesn't matter if you've been a part of this church for 60 years, you are still in a process of sanctification. In other words, becoming more and more like Jesus every single day. This is ongoing until, honestly, we die. Living less like the old Jeremy and more like how Jesus wants me to live. But James points out a problem. He says this, he says, your loyalty is divided between God and the world. It reminds me of the other day,

I was driving down the road and going fairly fast, and all of a sudden, a squirrel shoots out in front of me, right in my path. And you know what, as the squirrel shoots out, I'm trying to hit my brakes and stuff like that, but then the squirrel does this, it's probably happened to you, the squirrel stops and then does this. And I'm like going, just get out of the way, just keep going across the road. And no, it's like zigzagging back and forth and I squash it, you know what I mean? It's not my fault. Here's the thing, it's indecisiveness resulted in a tragic outcome. But we do the same, oh, I love God. Oh, I love the world. I love God. And we kind of go back and forth. If we would just commit, if we just commit, our indecisiveness results in tragic outcomes, right? Thank God that God doesn't squash us. He has grace. James is saying, you can't have your heart chasing after two opposite passions. That's what he's really saying there. He's like, you gotta love God and not the world, or you gotta love the world and not God. You gotta commit. And what he's saying is to the believers of that day,

he's like, your heart is divided. So my question that I ask all of us that I'm even asking myself is what still competes with God for your affection? What is it? What is it? Is it a person? Is it a thing? Is it money? Is it success? Is it reputation? Is it a vice? What is it? What competes with God for your affection? We all have a list, right? You're probably thinking like it's an old scroll. You're like, brr, let me pull out the list. Well, I'm gonna help you, and don't be discouraged by this, that you might have a long list. Pick the top one, just the top one, and say, God, help me on this one. Pick the big one, the one that you're like, I really struggle with this one, and focus on that. Don't worry. I'm not saying ignore the other ones, but here's the thing. Focus on the big one first, and say, God, help me to conquer this area, because this thing is vying for my heart,

and my heart should be yours. Ask God, and this is strange, but ask God to break your heart over what breaks his. Ask him, say, God, I know that this compromise hurts your heart. Help it to hurt mine. So what does James say to do? Repent, repent. I know that's a churchy term, but I would say this. It's not a churchy term. That's actually a Bible term. He says, let there be tears for what you've done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter and gloom instead of joy. And I know, I know, many times you come to church and you're like, you know, just pastor help me to feel better and be happy and things like that. Yes, God wants you happy, but I'll tell you what, He also wants you holy. And that means that sometimes we have to grieve, not take on guilt, not walk around in shame. That's what the enemy does. The enemy says, shame on you. Jesus says, no, shame off you. Okay, so listen, this is not about shame, it's not about guilt, it's not about false emotion, nothing like that. What it is, it's spiritual clarity about the seriousness of sin. And Paul describes it this way. Second Corinthians, he says, godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation. So there needs to be a sorrow from time to time.

True repentance means this, owning it, grieving it, and asking God to change it. It's not just owning it. Oh yeah, I blew it. But it's also saying, God, my heart's heavy because I screwed up. And then say, God, I need to change. I need to do an about face here. I can't keep marching in the same direction. You and I will never change what we refuse to admit is wrong. We won't. So lastly, James is like, walk in humility. Walk in humility. I want to point out something. I think it's interesting. I'm going to put the passage on the screen here. It started off with, so humble yourselves before God. And then he gives all kinds of instruction. And at the very end, he says, humble yourselves before the Lord. And he will lift you up in honor. Humble, humble. The bookends of resisting the enemy and living a life that's pleasing to God, the bookends are humility. Humility is the key that unlocks a life that pleases God. It's saying, God, I am not in charge. And I am also not going to justify my compromise. I'm going to humble myself. I think it's interesting that the man who is the half brother of Jesus, James, wrote this. Because for a major portion of his life, he walked in pride saying, Jesus is crazy. He is not who he says he is. And he had to humble himself and say, you know what? Jesus is God.

And I was wrong. I was wrong. James would say this. When we humble ourselves before God, the devil runs. Our hearts are cleansed. And God restores what pride destroyed. And so today, as we close, my prayer is that we take James's words very seriously. That we humble ourselves. That we admit our sin. Quit trying to hide the sin. Okay, remember, God is all-knowing. What was the very first thing in the garden? Adam and Eve hid after they sinned. Like, that's going to work. That's going to work. He's God. He's going to be like, I don't know where they are. But we as humans have been hiding ever since. After we sin, we hide. And my encouragement is this, is that we say, God, I admit my sin and my compromise. And I, in humility, am going to admit it and ask for your help. And when that happens, we move close to God. And God moves close to us. And he begins to cleanse our hearts. And he begins to change us little by little. Not perfect. We are not perfect. But little by little, he begins to change us. And it all begins with humility. Being honest.

I remember somebody told me this one time, being humble is being honest. Like, when you think you're all that, that's not reality. That's called pride. And also, on the other end of the spectrum, when you say, I am nothing, I am worthless, that's not true either. Humility is truth. And the truth is, you shouldn't be. be in the driver's seat of your life, your place is in the passenger seat, and to be able to say, God, you're in charge. Lord, I just pray right now as we close that you would help us to be humble, help us to admit the fact that many times our hearts are compromising. We say things, we do things, our motives are wrong, we treat people wrong, we do things we regret, have consequence. So Lord, in humility, we say, God, forgive us. We name these things, we call them out. We don't just say vague generalities, there are things that we specifically are repenting for. And God, you promise that you'll forgive us and begin to cleanse our hearts. And Lord, we purposely this morning, we say we move close to you and you will move close to us. God, help us to not be divided in our hearts because if we're gonna be honest, many of us, we still love the old ways of life. God, help us to love your way, not be divided between you and this world.

Help us to be all in with you. Every day, help us to do this more and more and more. We're not gonna be perfect, but God, lead us and guide us by your Holy Spirit. And God, when it comes to sin, may we flee, run from it, not put ourselves in dumb situations where we do dumb things, but instead, may we run from those things. And God, you say that if we resist the temptation of the enemy, he will have to flee from us. So God, help that to happen. Lord, mark our lives with humility and our desperate, desperate, desperate need for you. We love you. Thank you for your grace in Jesus' name. With every head bowed and every eye closed, real quickly, 30 seconds. If you say, man, today I've been listening to this and I need to make Jesus the leader and the forgiver of my life, I'm gonna put him in the driver's seat of my life. Doesn't mean you're gonna be perfect, you're not joining a church today, anything like that. This is joining the family of God. He created you, he loves you, and he sent his son, Jesus, to die for your sin and for mine, to pay the price that we could not pay. Jesus rose from the dead. The Bible says he will give us a new life. And so if you say, that's what I need,

I need Jesus to be the leader of my life, I wanna ask for forgiveness today. If that's you, just go ahead and raise your hand, I wanna pray for you. Yeah, hands are up all over the room, I guarantee at every location. Go ahead and put your hands down. Whether you raised your hand or you didn't, let's all say this out loud and realize this. I say this almost every week. When you repeat this prayer, you're not repeating my prayer, you're saying the prayer and God is listening to your voice. He loves you, he wants to forgive you, he wants to lead your life. So let's all say this prayer together, ready? Heavenly Father, I come to you today and I admit that I'm a sinner. I need your grace, I need your forgiveness. So forgive me. Jesus, thank you for dying for me. Give me a new life. Come into my heart, I wanna live for you. In Jesus' name, and everybody said, amen, amen. Come on, let's give God a huge round of applause.
