Devoted to His Voice | Devoted | Twin Rivers Church

A couple years ago, I was invited to speak at an event in Hawaii, so of course I said yes. And Kayla and I went with the kids, and afterwards, we stayed in vacation. And one day we're going on a hike down the side of kind of the coastal area that we were in, and we come to a place that's known for cliff jumping. Some high kind of rocks, and when we get there, there's all these teenagers who are jumping off of it into this blue, clear water. It was really nice. And then all of a sudden, Kayla and Sawyer announced they want to do it, which I was all in favor of, until they said, and we want you to do it with us. Now, I've done some jumping off stuff, but not as high as this. I mean, this is high. And so I explained to them, listen, I love Jesus. I don't want to meet him today, though, and so I'm not thinking about doing this. And I just pictured me getting to the edge and every one of those teenagers raising their phone up, and it's like, then they post the video, and the caption is like, bald pastor makes big wave, and I didn't feel really like going viral, so to say. So with that being said, I passed on the opportunity and gladly filmed Sawyer and Kayla. Well, we're hiking back, and they're talking about how amazing it is, and all of a sudden, there's this little bit of regret

that comes up, because I'm realizing now we all went on the same vacation, but we did not all have the same experience. And today, this room, we're all wearing the same label, Christian, but I'm very aware we're not all having the same experience. Some of you are having a very rich relationship with God, and some of you are kind of stuck in a, for lack of a better term, dry religion. Some of you have this sense of purpose on your life, and then some of you feel like there's a missing piece. Some of you, there's just this inner strength that almost seems endless, and then there's some of you are like, I'm just constantly overwhelmed and stressed out. All Christian, but very different experiences. And if I were to trace back why those, kind of that differentiation happens, I think I could narrow it down to one word, and the word would be devoted. And my goal this year is to help you become a fully devoted follower of Christ so that you can receive all the experience that he has for you. This conundrum is best played out in a passage of scripture in Luke chapter 24. Very unique, and so unique and so rich, we're actually going to stay there for the entire series. Every week, I'm gonna take you through a little bit more of it.

To give you context, Jesus has been arrested and he was crucified, and immediately his followers are just dispersed in fear that this would happen to them as well. So they've just moved in a thousand different directions, they're hiding, and so there's not like central command calling the plays of what's happening, they just know he was killed. We know, because we read the gospels that three days later, the greatest moment in human history takes place when Jesus is resurrected from the dead. They don't know that though. They're just dispersed, they're hiding, they're concerned, and all of a sudden there's some rumors that start to come out that he has in fact been raised from the dead. Somebody saw an empty tomb, like they're confused at best, trying to figure out what has happened, and they start to come out of hiding to figure out what's going on. Luke chapter 24 zooms in on two followers who are walking on a road out of Jerusalem where all these events took place toward a town called Emmaus, and then something extraordinary happens, and I'm gonna show it to you. Luke chapter 24 verse 13.

Now that same day, two of them were going to the village Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened, and as they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them, but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, what are you discussing together as you walk along? And they stood still with their faces downcast, and one of them, whose name was Cleopas, asked him, are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened here over these last few days? And he says, well, what things? Jesus asked. Well, about Jesus of Nazareth. They replied, he was a prophet, powerful in the word, deed before God and all people. Now, this is so interesting. You have followers of Jesus talking to each other about what's happened to Jesus, and Jesus walks up, but they don't recognize him, so they start talking to Jesus about Jesus. Like literally, they're sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with Jesus Christ. And you're almost, how does this happen? How do people who have given their allegiance to someone who have chosen to follow them,

they don't even recognize him. How is this even possible? Well, there's a detail in what they say that I think leans into how this happens. Let me show it to you in verse 20. This is them talking to Jesus. They said, the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him. but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel and What is more it is the third day since that all took place now in addition some of our women have amazed us They went to the tomb early this morning, but they didn't find his body They came out and told us they had saw a vision of an angel who said he was alive Then some of our other companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women have said but they didn't see Jesus Now, did you notice this? They're saying they're saying um We he was crucified now we weren't there We didn't see the crucifixion But he was crucified and we were told that that took place and then they said and then we found out that the garden tomb Somebody went there and it seems to be open now We didn't see it was open but they told us it was open and Then they go and some other people actually looked in the grave and they they saw it was an empty now And we didn't see it was empty, but they they told us it was empty Everything they're saying about the experience is secondhand it's all someone else's experience not their own that they're living off of and I bring that up because Churches are filled with people who have given their allegiance to Jesus But if they're honest, they don't see him anywhere in their life. I don't see his work in my marriage I don't see his work in my my career I don't see him working in my crisis my hardship my mental health like I just don't see him anywhere

And they're kind of probably asking like how am I following a guy? I don't see and I would say it could be because you have a secondhand experience Let me say it this way. Um, you don't read the Bible you wait on me to read the Bible and then tell you what's in the Bible Like like you don't have a prayer life You know someone who has a prayer life and when things are in trouble you tell them to pray for you versus you doing it Yourself, but like you're not using your gifts to help other people You just share content of other people doing good things in the name of Jesus and celebrate it. Listen, you're associated with Jesus but you're not devoted to Jesus and it's creating a different experience and And and these two guys want a mess. Here's what they ultimately teach us is there is a difference between casual faith and devoted faith Casual faith love Sundays at Twin Rivers, but it doesn't really change how they live Monday throughout their week Casual faith loves the to post scriptures, but it's never taken the time to actually learn any of the scriptures Casual faith loves the idea and feels kind of this empathy towards hurting people But not enough empathy to actually give of your time or money to help Casual faith claims to be a person of faith when we fill out census information Yet has never shared your faith with a single other person that needs it Casual faith is the type of faith that says God I want you to favor my life, but then excludes him from your financial life your work life your dating life and your social life Casual faith is the type that says God I want your blessing on my plan, but never stop to ask Is this your plan God on the life that you gave me and so many people are living with a casual faith? And it's all fine and well until Crisis hits some years ago Kayla was Kind of scheduled to have individual sit-downs with several young women who were in crisis moments And it was just you know different circumstance some had vocational crisis some emotional some relational And and she sat with all of them And and then she came in kind of the end and she she said to me she goes we got a problem I said, what do you mean?

She said I just sat with with each one of these and they all have kind of a crisis going on And I said well, that's not really new. That's kind of what we do as pastors. We meet with people in crisis And she said no, no, no, she said here's the problem She said I would ask like hey, what scripture are you hanging on to and they would allow I don't really read any scriptures Like what what what prayer are you praying? Well, my mom's praying for me You know, what what choice who's helping you make these choices? well their choices didn't look any different than a non-believers choices in the dating and in the way they spent money in the way and she Said here's the problem. These aren't fringe people. Their parents are leaders in the church They've been raised in the church They serve in the church and yet there is no difference in what they are living out in their faith than someone who has no faith For all this church activity. They have come to the place where they have a faith that doesn't function They have a Christless Christianity and their lives are a mess and she said how does this happen? And so ultimately kind of my assignment in this first series of the year is this is just to be abundantly clear Casual Christianity does not work that there's no power. There's no satisfaction in a casual approach to this Listen, it's not enough that you just attend church. It's not enough that you say a memorized prayer before you eat something It's not enough that you post some godly content once in a while It's not enough to deliver the transformation you're looking for, that the abundant life only comes through the devoted life. And if you want to find the richness that you set out to find, the satisfaction, the transformation that Jesus claims he can have, you gotta make a deeper commitment. So I think the first Sunday of the year is a great Sunday for all of us to formally quit casual Christianity and to say we this year will become fully, truly devoted followers of Christ

because if it was enough for Jesus to die for, it's enough for me to commit to. And that's my goal is to help you with that. So each week I'm gonna kinda add a little bit to what this idea of devoted looks like. And today we're gonna start with just this idea that it all begins with becoming devoted to his voice. Now what was so interesting to me about the Emmaus passage is this. These guys have probably, likely heard Jesus teach many times. And yet they do not recognize his voice in this moment. And I want you to know, Christianity emphasizes several things. It emphasizes reading scripture, singing worship, praying out loud. But more than anything else that you need to know this, it rises and falls on your ability to hear. Romans chapter 10 verse 17 says faith comes by hearing. Hearing, okay? And that's because God is a speaking God. He's chosen to be a speaking God. In his wisdom he chose to speak to chaos and it turned into creations, the heaven and the earth. God spoke to every single prophet, priest, and king he ever called in scripture. God speaks through, when he spoke to the heart of the gospel writers for them to record his word. And we don't add to the scriptures, but we do acknowledge that in Acts chapter two,

he went beyond the scriptures and said, I will now fill with my spirit every single follower so that they have the scriptures to hear me, but also the witness of my spirit in them. Our God is a speaking God, which, oh, by the way, separates us from every other world religion. You see, every world religion for the most part has a moral code. They have historical, you know, elements that, you know, extraordinary events that have taken place. They have doctrine you're supposed to learn, but we're the only one that has a living God who speaks to every one of his followers, who has moved inside of those followers, indwelling them and speaks to them regularly and consistently. Every other religion on earth has a distant deity who does not talk. Christianity is the 1%, the one religion where he is so close that at any moment, any time in your existence, you can just whisper his name in your heart and he speaks back to you. Our God speaks. So hearing him is the difference between failing or flourishing in your faith. But I like this thing, Romans 10, when he says faith comes by hearing, that could also mean faith recedes by hearing. Maybe that's your issue.

Maybe the lack of vibrancy and then the kind of the lack of richness, the casual faith, it's actually a product of the fact you have hampered hearing when it comes to hearing God. Now, I've taught people for years how to use their spiritual ears, how, you know, I believe scripture clearly teaches and I've helped people with practices to learn how to hear the voice of God for themselves. But recently, I've been, after doing this for years, I've come to this conclusion that I used to only approach it by teaching people how to increase the volume of God's voice. But what I noticed is that people would have a Bible reading plan and they still struggled. They would have a prayer pattern and they would still struggle. And then it dawned on me one day this, that maybe the problem with hearing is not just that they've increased the voice of God, but it's that they haven't decreased the competitors to his voice. And so, I don't know if you're aware of this, but there are a lot of voices that are competing with God's voice in your life. Let me give you a couple of them that you're gonna have to address. The very first one is, is you're gonna have to address the voice of self-sufficiency. You were born ready to depend on yourself.

That's just who we are, it's our nature, it's part of our sin nature. And you happen to live in a part of the world where that's celebrated. Pick yourself up by your bootstraps, be independent, make your own, bet you're a self-made man. That's wonderful. Here's the problem, though. It teaches us to think through things instead of pray through things. It teaches us to try harder instead of surrender more. And before it's all said and done, we're all living self-reliant instead of God-reliant. And the problem with that, it ultimately boils down to this, is that if you are dependent on yourself, you can't receive from God. Let me show it to you in 2 Corinthians 3, verse five. It says, we do not have the right to claim what we have done, anything on our own. God gives us what it takes to do all that we do. Now, listen, there is a synonym to self-sufficiency in scripture, and here's the synonym, it's pride. The way God sees your or my self-sufficiency is pride. Now, I know you didn't set out for it to be pride, and nobody would want to be prideful towards you. towards even another person or towards God, but that's ultimately when we say, God, we got this, we can handle this, we can do this, that's pride.

And that's just part of, you know, for some of you, that's the main issue. Like you're naturally gonna just work hard, grind, you're doing it for yourself, and you have team meetings and you're just the only one at the table. And there's just this reality that that's just the way you live, it's the way you've always lived, and you've never even considered inviting God to participate in the life he gave you. But you're gonna need to if you wanna hear his voice because we cannot operate in pride. Pride severs us from what God wants to do in our life. Years ago, Sawyer was in a phase, maybe your kid was in a phase like this, where he just wanted to do everything himself. He was in preschool and it's like everything, he's gonna do everything, he's gonna get the toy, he's gonna get himself dressed, he's gonna brush his teeth, he refused and he held. And so one day I come downstairs and I was gonna get him a snack. And I say, hey buddy, I'm gonna get you a snack. Now I knew he loved ice cream, I was gonna get him an ice cream bar. And immediately, no, no, no, I get it, I get it, I get it. I said, okay buddy, but I'll get you a snack. No, no, no, through a big fit, he's gonna get it. So okay, well you get it then.

But here's Sawyer's problem at this stage in his life. He's two foot tall. And our pantry, the only thing you can get if you're two foot tall are some crackers. So Sawyer walks in the pantry and gets his snack, some crackers. And there's he standing eating crackers and here I am standing eating ice cream. And I thought, what a picture this is. That I came down here intending to bless him with some ice cream, but because of his refusal to know I'll do it, I'll do it, I'll do it, he ends up eating nasty old crackers. I wonder how many times God's come into your life intending to bless you beyond anything you could have dreamed and you said, no God, I got it, I can fix it, I can heal it, I can take care of it. And God says, okay, well go ahead. See, listen, I don't want this to be a year you settle for eating crackers when God's actually intended to give you ice cream. I want this to be a year that you receive all that he actually has for you, but you're gonna have to take a position of humility and you're gonna say, God, this life that I claim is mine, it's really a gift from you. You've given it to me, you sustain it, and I don't want to live a day without receiving your voice and how to live it. The second one would be, you're gonna have to deal

with the voice of fear. In scripture, you'll find everywhere God speaks peace and everywhere the enemy speaks, your spiritual enemy is fear. Revelation 12, 10 says that your spiritual enemy is the accuser, constantly reminding us of our biggest mistakes, our failures, all the things that are lacking. And it's true that he does want you to feel shame for what you've done, but I believe this, the reason the enemy reminds you of your past failures is because he wants to freeze you in fear for the future. It's not just about shame, it's also so you'll stop moving forward. Every time he's ever spoken to you, every syllable has been to paralyze you in fear. Hey, don't forgive them because then they'll go unpunished. Don't share the real you because people will reject it. Don't take that step of faith because you'll fail. There's just this dynamic where he's constantly trying to keep you from stepping, and it's because if he can get you to operate in fear, you stop moving forward in what God has for you. The most profound experience I've ever had with this was when I was approached about being the pastor of this church. They came to me and I was on staff, they said, we want you to lead the church. I was 29 years old, I had never led a church, and I'd only ever preached about five or six sermons,

and none of them were any good, okay, none of them. As a matter of fact, Caleb found the other day a cassette tape with one of my very first sermons, and I said, burn it, because Lord knows what I probably said in it. And some of you are like, what's a cassette tape? Just Google it, you'll figure it out, okay? So, I remember the night that they asked me to do it, and they said, well, you're gonna have a couple weeks to decide if you wanna do that. And I remember going home, and I'd never felt fear like I felt that night. All I could think of is I'm gonna fail people, I'm gonna hurt people, I'm gonna cause this great church to go into decline, all I could think about. It was so, so much, I went and laid on the bed, and I felt like a heaviness, it was like 1,000 pounds were laying on my chest. It's so much that it was like I was taking short breaths, and I couldn't even muster enough faith to pray, and I said, Caleb, will you come pray for me? And she came over to pray for me, and then when she walked away, I thought, my gosh, I can't pastor a church, I can't even pray for myself. Like, it made it even worse. Well, this went on for several days, and then it was getting close to where I had to make a decision.

And I remember setting it in a corner of a sectional we used to own, and I just remember telling the Lord, Lord, I can't do this, I'm gonna pass, you need to find somebody else. And very, very profoundly, I felt the spirit of God come into that moment, and He only said one thing, and this is what He says, don't miss what I have planned for you. And that was enough for me to kind of go out on a limb, but I'm telling you, I look back at it now, and I think of all the things I would have missed. We love you, Pastor. You think about all. The people who have been saved. I love you guys, too. It's wonderful. It's a blessing. But listen You think about all the people that have been saved all the people that have been baptized all the service We've done for this city all those things think about that. I think I could have missed out on that I think you guys would have still experienced it, but I I would have missed out on all that Listen to me You have no idea what God has planned for this year The Bible says that his goal is to move you from glory to glory And it's the enemy's goal and fear to keep you in your current glory and never see any other. I Know it's unnerving. I know you don't know what to believe or what you're trying to listen to me Do not base your obedience on your understanding If your obedience is tied to your understanding you'll miss many miracles God wants to do in your life This year despite what fear says despite your feelings raging you have to step out in faith And if you do you're gonna be astounded what God does this year Now the last one is one I think we we all deal with maybe to the greatest degree and it's this the voice of more We live in a culture that says you need more You need to work more you need to accomplish more you need to own more you need to earn more

You need to have more friends. You need to have more influence. You need to have more. It's just more we live in this And so we're constantly adding to our life We're constantly, you know signing on and being because more somehow equals equals good And if you're like me you get to a place where you're going I'm I've got so much more I'm moving too fast and I'm carrying too much Now this is very important. I want you to listen Stress is just as lethal to your spirit as sin is Because when you you get stressed here's what happens is you start making ungodly choices ungodly compromises ungodly shortcuts And the first thing to go when you're stressed is your time with God to hear his voice So it's just as effective as sin and At some point I think what's crazy about this is we all know this Like none of you are like, you know what that I didn't realize that me taking on too much as the problem We all know this is the problem. Why do we do it? Well, here's my theory I think we do it because there's a deeper issue in identity See inside of each one of us is a little voice that says you're not enough you're not valuable you're not important and you got to prove that you are and The way we prove we are is through our accomplishments through our business through through all the things you can even hear it in our Conversations like you'll come up somebody and it's almost universal. What do you guys mean? Oh, we've been busy and then you name all your business. You know what you're really saying. I'm important I'm valuable because I wouldn't be busy if I wasn't important There's this cry on the inside of us that we're trying to to silence that says I'm enough. I'm important I matter and so how could I not matter with all this stuff and all these things and this schedule, of course I matter but what you and I don't realize is when we listen to the voice of more you're going to end up enslaved to More and enslaved is a very intentional term I would use because that's the way some of you feel there are moms in this room right now You're working full-time. You're trying to keep your house up to perfection You're you know making lunch and dinner every night. You're trying to be president of the PTA You're running your kids everywhere and then you get to the end of your day and you have no peace and no joy and you Wonder what's wrong?

There's students here that you like last semester was tough this semester's even tougher because last semester you took 14 hours now You're taking 16 hours plus you're working full-time and you're trying to keep up your friends life and your dating life and oh by the Way, you've got to curate all of the content So people see what a success you are and you lay down at night and you're empty And there's there's guys who are here today and you you're just going as hard as you can and you've told yourself This is what I have to do I got a grind to provide for my family and let me just say from a biblical perspective It is noble to provide for your family. What is not noble is to call it providing for your family but really just trying to heal a wound on the inside of you that says I'm not enough and I have to earn more to Prove I'm enough and I have to get a better title to prove. I'm enough that's not noble at all because what you're in fact doing is taking time and attention and energy from your wife and children and Giving it to this thing that is never going to heal you And it even gets into our it even gets our spirituality Like some of you like you feel so guilty if you don't read the Bible that day And if you miss prayer, it's off and you're constantly asking have I done enough you have made following Jesus the avoidance of failure Slavery And so I found you a verse Some of you if this is your like this is your voice You need to take this verse read this verse like maybe get a tattoo of this verse possibly it's a little long you have to have a lot of real estate, but Romans 8 15 The spirit you received does not make you slaves So that you live in fear again rather the spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship and By him we cry Abba father that in the original language. That's the most intimate term for father It's it's like saying we call him dad and the spirit himself Testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Did you catch that the eternal holy word of God says you are not what you do You are not what you own You are not what you wear

You're not the title that you have you are not what your transcripts say you are not what your resume says You are not your connections. You are not how many people follow you You are not that you are a child of God and that his approval of you has nothing based on what you do or don't Do it's complete because you are his he doesn't care if you're productive another day in your life You could retire today set on the front porch drink tea for eternity And he will love you as much then as he loves you today in all of your more You got to receive that And I know like we get to the place and the message and because I've done this enough We're showing you like well pastor. I get it, but I can't hear God Like it's just that works for other people I've tried and I just don't feel like he's talking to me and Listen I've been there. I know what that's like, but I'm saying to you You just don't realize how loud life is Like you just set out into adulthood and you decide you're gonna make yourself of something So you started working really hard And I mean you're you're you're slaving away trying to you know The main hustle and the side hustle and then out of that you you're constantly pushing yourself and driving yourself to try to do this And you're working so hard trying to keep up, and it's just not it's not working for you But you push harder even more and then eventually you get a family and out of the family you you start You know committing not just to yourself But to other people and then you're trying to keep up with all of the the other things that are responsible People are demanding more of you, and then you gotta decide you know what I gotta get up And I gotta be healthy and so I'm gonna be healthy, too But then you also got more people who want to be a part of your life So you want to be have friends and then out of that you're also trying to keep the house up You're trying to keep your schedule up and all this time God has been speaking, but you didn't realize it because the other voices were so Loud Listen don't you ever believe the lie that God's not speaking to you You just don't realize all the other things that are drowning him out

So here's what we're gonna do if we're gonna be devoted to his voice there's two prerequisites to hear God Here's the first one you must surrender your life to Christ and I Want to say this especially if you're not a follower of Jesus first of all I'm so glad you're here today But but let me just let me be honest with you You can't do spiritual practices and hear the voice of God it starts with surrender Jesus said to himself in John 10 27 28. He said my sheep hear my voice And I know them and they follow me and I give them eternal life and they shall never perish neither shall anyone Snatch them out of my hand So listen You don't get his voice unless he gets your surrender And so that means you could actually read the Bible and you could pray but you won't hear him until he has your heart completely And and for some of you that may be a cue because what you've done is partially surrender You're kind of that casual faith thing. We talked about This is the year to go all in Good. Don't don't risk it. Don't don't be like well, I just I just want to keep it No, no, this is the year Surrender all your time surrender all your aims surrender your relationships surrender your your kind of passions and pursuits Like this is the year to go all in with God and if you do here's what's gonna happen you're gonna hear his voice and you're gonna be blown away that this rich faith that You set out to have is actually something God will deliver and Here's the second thing that's gonna have to happen is is that if you are a follower of Christ is you're gonna have to create space to be still Here's what I've learned about God he doesn't adjust He doesn't compete He will not get louder just because everything in your life is loud

He expects us to adjust things to hear him and So for many of you, especially if you're believing this is one of the reasons why your spiritual practices of whether it's Bible reaper I probably aren't working is Because you're not turning down the competing voices Look at this scripture. It says Psalm 131 to it says but I have stilled and Quieted myself just as a small child is quiet with its mother Yes, I am like a small child and my with my soul within me. He's basically describing this picture We've all seen it before and it's this it's this idea of a child starts to act out crying a baby, and you try to give it something, a toy, you know, somebody else tries to hold it, nothing works, and then mom comes in, takes it in his arms, pulls it close, it settles, and eventually very quickly is sleeping. He's saying that's what you have to do with your soul, because your soul is constantly acting out. It doesn't want to be quiet, it doesn't want to, and you've got to pull it in and go, listen, listen, listen, so we've got to be still, because we've got to hear God. And this, listen, this is why some of you are in the reading plan, but you're getting nothing out of it. It's why you pray, and it just feels so dry. It's why you, your worship, it's like, just words crossing your lips, there's no dynamic to it. It's because you are trying to put spiritual practices on a chaotic heart. And so we steal ourselves, and then the practices come. So here's my challenge, I love a good challenge, I hope you do too, here's your challenge. I want you to create space, two ways. First, I want you to commit to be here every single Sunday for this series. Every Sunday. And I know immediately, you're like, well, I can't, I'll just catch it online, no, no, no, no. No, I want the extra effort to show God He's the priority, that His voice is the priority.

You say, well, I've got this thing in two weeks, and then, listen, cancel it. Well, you don't even know if it's important. I know it's not as important as hearing God. And then here's the second thing, I want you to start every day of this series, every single day, with stillness and silence, before you grab your phone, before you open your Bible reading plan, before you pray, before you make the coffee, stillness. And I know some of you are like, well, I can't do it, I just can't. I mean, I've got ADD, ADHD, ABCD, I just, I'm not going to be able to do it. Listen, listen, listen, none of us are. We're all overstimulated, we all got too much, that we're all going to struggle. Like you're going to set up tomorrow, and you're going to try to do this, and literally your hand's going to start to shake, because your phone's not in its hand. You're like going to start twitching, because it's been three minutes without any, and that's okay. Keep showing up each day, each day, each day. Here's what I've noticed, is that when you practice silence, it gets easier to practice silence. And then eventually, listen, listen, eventually it goes from practicing it, to loving it.
